Spectacular Celeb

New Artist Spotlight By Bob Doerschuk

It’s been a while since Paige Logan and Heather Looney chased their dreams to Nashville. Logan came from Safford, Arizona, where she studied piano, taught herself guitar and mandolin, and soaked up the sounds of her dad’s LP and 8-track collection. In 1993, she and her sister hit the road for Music City; a year later, Paige was there alone, beginning a long stretch of day jobs and determination. Meanwhile, Looney and her dad had been performing around Shreveport, La. Going solo, she relocated frequently

before settling in Nashville with her husband a year after Logan’s arrival. Eventually the two crossed paths, and their 20-year friendship culminated in their debut album, Whole Lot Of Livin’, produced by Paige’s husband Mills Logan and Leigh Reynolds. Rhymetown Entertainment released the debut album in January. Vocal blends distinguish this duo. They embrace vibrato as an expressive device. When they drop it for a few beats, as in the higher passages of ‘Far Too Long’ (written by Logan and Looney), the impact is

dramatic. They also avoid the upper register, concentrating on the contralto range; the result is a honeyed, rich quality that draws listeners in as if to a whisper. And they sing almost exclusively in harmony; when one breaks into a solo line and the other improvises some churchy backup on ‘Don’t Make Me The Reason’ (Logan and Looney), the moment seems to spark from the speakers. Mind & Soul

e m i T g n i Rac Do you feel like you’re in a race against time? Do you find yourself wishing that the hands of your clock would just slowdown so that you could get more things done? Unfortunately for us, hoping for more time is a lost cause and we have to make-do with just 24 hours a day… For the majority of us, our lives revolve around the constant race against time. From getting work done, to watching TV, to exercising, the world has become so fast paced. When we manage to finish one task, the urgency of doing others overwhelms us and we get back to work. This constant time battle has left many of us unaware, and sometimes unappreciative, of the little things that life has to offer. Little things like witnessing your baby’s first steps or just enjoying the beauty of nature are things we miss because we’re too busy rushing through life. But, don’t be the one to miss out on life’s most special moments because there is a way to beat the system: Early To Rise Siham, working mother of two living in Jeddah, explained, “When my children started referring to our maid as ‘mama’, I felt terribly guilty! I kept wondering how I failed them and what I could’ve done differently. I realised then that I had to sacrifice something if I wanted to gain my title back. I started waking up at seven a.m. everyday so I could spend time with my children before they went to school

12

APRIL 2014

and before I went to work. This early morning routine helped so much because I got to bond with my children.” Using this earlyrising technique is not breaking news, it’s an ageold wisdom that has been preached and practised for generations. So when you feel you don’t have enough hours in your day, wake up a few hours earlier. Stop Right There “Don’t catch every ball that is thrown your way. You don’t have to answer every phone call you get and you don’t have to tend to every problem, friend dilemma, and so-called emergency people throw at you,” explains Robin Sharma in his book ‘The Greatness Guide’. Basically, be wise to what you spend your time and energy on and you’ll find that by doing so you will free up more of yourself for the really important matters that you need to attend to. Learn to set boundaries for yourself and others. If you keep taking on more work than you can handle, you’ll be damaging much more than just your health; you’ll be damaging the purpose of your life, which is to enjoy it. Spiritual Peace

Most of us get so entangled in our everyday affairs that we lose touch with our souls, our inner beings. This is why we feel lost, empty, and worthless. When we truly understand who we are and what makes us special, that’s when we’re at peace with ourselves and those around us. Meditation takes many forms and comes in various degrees; just ten minutes of Yoga a day is enough to keep you strong both mentally and physically. And surprisingly, when you find inner peace, you find calm within chaos. Take A Walk When you feel life is moving too fast, take some time out and just go for a walk. From revitalizing your senses, to organizing your thoughts, you’d be surprised at what a breath of fresh air and a brisk exercise can do for you. Shaun T, celebrity fitness instructor in LA, explains, “Not only does exercise help you look better, it actually speeds up your system. This in turn leads to numerous advantages among which is a sharper brain; in essence, your decision-making will be faster making your work faster and more efficient and your workday shorter.”

Personality

Agoraphobia: Fear Of The Unknown On the surface, Sara’s* life seems perfectly normal. She has been married for 15 years and is a proud mother of two beautiful girls. But, she hasn’t stepped outside her house for almost five years. Her fear of unknown public spaces left her confined to her house where she feels safe and secure. She is an Agoraphobic…

People who suffer from this condition usually restrict

14

APRIL 2014

themselves to a safety zone, such as their home or immediate neighbourhood. Even when they restrict themselves to these safe zones, they continue to have panic attacks at least a few times a month. This condition can seriously disable its sufferers, as they rely greatly on their family and friends for almost all errands. Some people even resort to working from their homes so that they don’t have to face the fear of the unknown. The result of this is that their social and interpersonal relationships suffer immensely. According to a recent study, agoraphobia occurred more commonly in women than men, but the exact reason for this is still not known. Sara continued, “I feel so guilty for not being able to take the girls out myself. My husband always has to come along. I can’t do it without him.” She also added that she was not always like this. She used to be a normal person and the outside

world didn’t scare her. But after she got married, her fears started developing and gradually led her to believe that she couldn’t go out by herself. Experts say that most people develop this condition after their 20’s and several factors contribute to its development. Factors such as having an anxious parent, an overly critical parent, or being abused as a child are the most significant contributors. Other than these factors, an immense need for approval, oversensitivity to emotional stimuli, hormonal changes, and a need for control are also possible triggers. Sufferers could also develop a disoriented vision when visual cues are widely distributed, such as in the case of wide-open spaces or mass crowds. Seek And Destroy Sara recalled, “I knew something was wrong with me when I started feeling scared every time my husband went to work. It gradually escalated to a point where I would literally

*Name has been changed.

Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder triggered by the fear of open, public settings. This is why agoraphobics become anxious in environments that are unfamiliar or where they perceive that they have little control. This anxiety leads them to avoid situations like being outside the house or travelling in a bus or airplane and they always require another person’s company in such situations. They could also experience panic attacks in situations where they feel out of control, uncomfortable, trapped, or insecure. When asked about her disorder, Sara explained, “It’s not like I’m scared of people, but I can’t handle large crowds in places that are new to me. I get very nervous because I don’t want others to see that I’m petrified.” Like Sara explained, agoraphobics are not scared of people. They happily receive visitors in their homes or other closed spaces that they feel control over.

beg him to take a day off and stay at home because I couldn’t handle being alone. Then my husband suggested we consult a psychiatrist and I was diagnosed with agoraphobia.” This fear of being alone is one of the most common symptoms of agoraphobia. The fear often becomes so severe that it impairs a person’s everyday routine and completely absorbs her. Other significant symptoms include the fear of being in places where escape might be difficult, fear of losing control in a public setting, feelings of detachment, dependence upon others, anxiety, panic attacks, and erratic temper. Experts at the National Institute of Mental Health, USA, stress that if a person is experiencing any of these

symptoms, she must consult a psychiatrist immediately. Furthermore, treatments are complicated by the fact that patients often have difficulty getting to appointments because of their fears. This is why experts encourage therapists to go to patients’ homes for the initial sessions. Exposure therapy is the most commonly used technique for curing agoraphobia. In this technique, patients work with their therapists to develop coping strategies such as relaxation exercises and breathing. According to a recent study, 75% of patients who went through exposure therapy experienced reduced anxiety levels, higher morale, and a better quality of life. Other types of

therapies such as cognitive therapy, assertiveness training, biofeedback, meditation, and hypnosis were also helpful. And in severe cases, prescription medicines are used. Because Sara’s case was severe, her treatment needed a combination of therapies and medications. She still suffers from anxiety and fears leaving her comfort zone, but she has noticed a slight improvement in her condition. She said, “It’s been almost two years since I started the combination treatment and the results are clearly visible. I do get frightened at times, but I’m learning to cope with it. Just when I thought I could never live a normal life again, I was given hope!”

6 Relationships

Signs You’re Not Over Him

As much as we try to convince ourselves, and others, that we’re over an ex, we do certain things that prove otherwise. Check out these typical I’mso-not-over-him signs and find out if you’re still hung over Mr. History… 1. You Live In The Past No matter how hard you try, your mind keeps slipping back to the past forcing you to relive all the painful memories. You can’t help but think about the relationship highs, lows and the final goodbye, and you find it difficult to shut him out of your life. Shaimaa, 24-year-old architect from Egypt explains, “After I broke up with my ex, I spent hours in my room reading all the cards and letters he gave me. I used to cry myself to sleep every night because I didn’t understand how something so beautiful could just end. How could I cut off ties with the one person who truly loved me? I couldn’t really move on because he was always on my mind!” 2. You Still Have Hope You kid yourself by thinking that one day he’ll see the light and come running back to you, but how can you be so sure? Yes, a breakup is not what you want, but you can’t vouch the same for him. Shaimaa truly believed her ex

16

APRIL 2014

would come back to her; she added, “I was convinced that Ramy and I would get back together because we shared such a special bond, so I decided to give him some time to realise his mistake. But, it has been a year since we broke up and now I hear he’s dating someone else. I feel so foolish for wasting an entire year of my life!” 3. You Love Talking About Him Most of your conversations revolve around the infamous ex. You find some sort of comfort in discussing your past relationship with your friends and obsessing over the things he did. You may even attempt to befriend a couple of his friends just to find out what he’s been up to. You wonder if he also talks about you, or if he has a new love interest, or if he’s going to the same party you’re invited to. In her book ‘Exorcise Your Ex: The Guide To Getting Him Out Of Your System’, Carrie Southern explains that it’s not healthy to

obsess over your ex and that it’s a sure-fire sign that you’re still not moving on. She explains, “Talking about the ex makes you feel better because you feel connected to him, even if it’s not directly. However, think of the repercussions of talking to your new boyfriend about your ex; what does that tell him!” 4. You’re Jealous Of His Current Just listening to his new girlfriend’s name is enough to make your heart sink. You keep thinking about what he sees in her, or if he loves her more than he loved you, or whether she makes a better girlfriend than you. All the fiction you build about how they must be with each other makes you feel miserable and terribly lonely. Shaimaa admits that she too was just like any other jealous ex girlfriend; she couldn’t stand the thought of seeing them together. She said, “I was not at all fond of Ramy’s new girlfriend. I considered him to be mine and I wasn’t ready

to let him go.” 5. You Still Seek His Attention You’d intentionally wear a top gifted by him, or a perfume he loves, just to grab his attention. You like doing anything that guarantees a second look from him because you want to show him that you still care about what he thinks. Southern explains that this is classical behaviour when you’re not over an ex, “It’s normal to look forward to an upcoming event that your ex is going to and to dress up “for him”. The problem is that when it doesn’t work to get his attention, you feel even worse than when you first got to the event. Even if it works, you’re still holding on to something that should be left alone.” 6. You Use Him As A Benchmark You’ve grown so fond of him that every other guy you meet is not good enough. You may be so smitten by his kind heart, his goofy antics, or the way he made you feel that you find it impossible to feel these feelings with someone else. You use him as a point of comparison, as a result of which you keep finding faults in other men. “This is very typical and destructive behaviour when you are still hung-up on your ex. The day you meet someone and look back and think that your ex pales in comparison to your current, then you know that you’re starting to move on,” concludes Southern.

Bedazzled Friendships

The Unspoken Of Friendship

Rules

Who would have thought that even friendships have certain do’s and dont’s? As strange as it may sound, making a friendship work requires much more than just ‘clicking’ with each other, says Hafsa Mahfooz… From personal experience, I’ve learned that I’ve said and done certain things that ended up hurting my friends, but I didn’t do these things intentionally. And, for the longest time I didn’t understand why my friends took offence to my actions. My conscience was clear because I didn’t backstab, cheat, lie, or steal! Then it was my turn to face the music and I was on the receiving end; and that’s when I got it. I learned that you don’t always have to do something terribly evil to upset a friend; it’s the little things you overlook that really cause the damage. With that said, friendships have an unspoken code of conduct that we all need to follow whether we like it or not. Rule # 1: Cover Up Means Cover Up Covering up for a friend is a true test of loyalty. She may assign you the tedious task of watching out for her while she’s out having a jolly good time and your role as an accomplice might even require you to lie to her parents, boss, boyfriend, etc. This can be annoying and downright stupid, but she expects you to cover up for her and you have to do it for her sake. If you’re uncomfortable with being the designated saviour, clearly explain to her what you can

18

APRIL 2014

and cannot do in such sticky situations. But, refusing to help her altogether is a definite nono in the friendship rulebook. Rule # 2: Love Struck? I Don’t Care! The best of us tend to slip up when it comes to taking time out from our love lives to spend some quality time with our friends. When you’re in a committed relationship, you often focus most of your time and energy on your significant other, not realising that you’re doing so at the expense of your friends. And then when things don’t work out in the relationship, you expect your friends to be there for you. This selfish behaviour of yours is not going to go ignored; your friends will take notice of it and hold it against you. As a friend, you’re expected to make time for your buddies no matter what. Nothing will pinch them more than you ditching them for your significant other. Rule # 3: Give It To Me Straight Up If you have something to say to her, just go up to her and say it. It doesn’t matter if it’s going to hurt her feelings; she has to hear it from you. Don’t run around telling other people about it because then it’s going to get messy. Sondos from Jeddah agrees, “May’s boyfriend was really creepy

and he used to flirt with me all the time, but I didn’t know how to tell her. I told a couple of our friends about it and they even agreed with me. But, one of them decided to tell her everything and that person even added some of her own fiction! When May confronted me, things got really ugly and I became the bad person for spreading rumours about her boyfriend!” Rule # 4: Just Let Me Be Some of us can’t get enough of our friends and we feel the need to do everything with them. But, too much of anything is never a good idea. Even if you want to spend all your time with her, she might not want the same. It’s just not healthy or reasonable to expect her to be available for you all the time because she needs her space. Distance makes the hearts grow fonder, so allow your friendship to flourish by giving it room to grow. Rasha, 27-year-old living in Jeddah, concurs, “My best friend and I have a very understanding relationship. We don’t over-do the whole best-friend thing because it’s suffocating to be like that. We both have our own things to do, so we cherish the time we get with each other.” Rule # 5: Stay Away From Him

All of us know this one, yet some of us still choose to ignore it. Dating a friend’s ex is just not right; even thinking about it is forbidden! You might think she is completely over him and there’s no harm in going ahead with it, but it’s still going to hurt her. Even if she hates him to the core, it’s still not a good enough excuse. Wafa from Jeddah felt a rush of deceit, pain, and agony when her friend started going out with her ex. She says, “When I discovered that my friend was dating my ex, I was shattered. What hurt me most was the fact that she didn’t even tell me about it; I had to hear it from someone else. She broke my trust to pieces and I can never be the same with her again.” Rule # 6: Stand By Me Supporting a friend and being

there for her is your duty. If she calls in the middle of the night, listen to what she has to say and do whatever you can to comfort her. Even if she has done something wrong and the whole world is against her, stand by her and don’t leave her alone. Everyone makes mistakes and we all deserve a second chance, but friends deserve much more than that. Rawan, a 30-year-old banker from Jeddah, recalls the time when her friends shut her out because of something she did. Her only true friend was Lina, who didn’t judge her for what happened and continued to be her buddy. She explains, “Having Lina by my side really comforted me. She supported me in my toughest times and I’m truly blessed to have a friend like her.” Rule # 7: Competition?

What’s That? Girls have a bad habit of competing with each other in almost everything. Be it clothes, haircuts, or the latest gadgets, we often feel the need to outshine everyone else. Competing with friends is something nobody likes, yet we all do it. When you compete with a friend, you compel her to do the same and this leads to jealousy. Pause for a while and think: why would you want to outshine your own buddy? Competing for shallow things is pointless and it won’t do your friendship any good. So the next time your friend rubs a hot new commodity in your face, tell her you’re happy for her because that’s what she really wants to hear. And that’s what friendship is about: Seeking your happiness in hers.

Careers

Career Building Web Tools

“What you do and say online, as well as how you present yourself on social networking sites could be important in landing the position you’re seeking,” says Bowen Hopper, a former recruiter for Fortune 1,000 companies and currently a career services director for Colorado Technical University. “Your online presence and brand needs to reflect your skills, attitude, and talents.” For career seekers looking for ways to use social networking sites and web-based tools to get an edge in their job search, Hopper suggests: 1. Search Yourself. Have you ever typed your own name into a search engine like Google or Yahoo? This is a good starting point to determine what you’ll find about yourself online, and what first impression you would make on a recruiter or HR manager who conducts the same search and may focus on the first five or six search results. Depending on

20

APRIL 2014

what you discover, you can consider making changes to your profile pages on social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn if they don’t accurately capture your professional image and capabilities. 2. Use Discretion. A simple rule of thumb is to limit your content on social networking sites to what you would feel comfortable having a current or future employer view. Avoid any inappropriate pictures or statements on your site (or your friends’ sites) that may be perceived as a negative reflection of your character. If it’s an option, consider setting your profile to private so that most information can only be viewed by friends or colleagues of your choosing. Photo sharing sites like Flickr or Photobucket should also be closely monitored since these may be viewed by more than just the intended audience of family and friends.

3. Create A Personal Website. This is an increasingly popular and relatively inexpensive way to increase online visibility and searchability for your skills, experience, and qualifications. “A personal website is a living, breathing extension of your resume,” explains Hopper. Since it’s your own website, you can control and update the content at anytime. You can get started by reserving a personal domain name that includes your first and last name, and then using available (and often free) tools to create and populate your site with your brief biography, resume, photo, work samples, and links to any relevant online content about yourself or associations you belong to. 4. Define Your Personal Brand. Just as you customize your resume and cover letter for specific jobs, the same is necessary when it comes to creating your personal online brand. Understand the industry

Source: Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.

In today’s digital world, a job applicant’s online reputation is becoming just as important as a strong resume and networking skills. In fact, a 2010 study commissioned by Microsoft showed that 85% of HR professionals say that a positive online reputation to some extent influences their hiring decisions, and 75% report that their companies have formal policies in place that require hiring personnel to research applicants online. This means successful job seekers need to build a positive personal brand online by navigating the Web 2.0 world and taking advantage of social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and MySpace.

you’re targeting for a position to tailor how you present yourself online. This can extend to a personal website or the qualifications shared on your LinkedIn site, the background you use on Twitter, or your own personal Youtube channel.

FDI In The Netherlands In 2013 the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) was actively involved in supporting 193 foreign investment projects that landed in the Netherlands. These projects are good for a total investment of €1.7 billion in the Dutch economy and a record number of nearly 8,500 jobs. Additionally, a recent survey amongst foreign investors in the Netherlands also showed an increase in their appreciation of the Dutch investment climate:

Embassies Make The Netherlands Stronger Minister Ploumen is also pleased that, “These great results show that foreign investments bring in domestic jobs. Especially in these times we cannot have enough of those. Efforts by the NFIA and embassies abroad usually remain invisible. However, these results show how much they make the Netherlands stronger.” New Jobs And Job Retention In 2012 foreign investments were good for just over 5,000 jobs. Annual results for 2013

22

APRIL 2014

show an increase of more than 60% to 8,500. Examples of projects that resulted in new jobs or job retention over the past year are, amongst others, Nunhems from Germany (500 jobs in R&D), Moduslink (500 jobs in distribution), and IBM (350 service centre jobs); from the US, Indian IT company Wipro (250 service centre jobs) and Swedish SKF (100 new R&D jobs). United States Remains Most Important Source For FDI Projects Most investment projects (75) come from Asia, followed by North America (70) and Europe (34). A rise in the number of projects from Europe is particularly noticeable: nearly threefold from 12 to 34 projects. The United States as a country remains the most important source for FDI projects (64), followed at a distance by China (26), South Korea (15), the United Kingdom (13) and India (11). The US is also the source for most jobs and the highest investment amount. The results show that the Netherlands scores highly on projects in marketing and sales, distribution, and headquarter functions. The number of distribution projects

grew substantially, from 21 to 35. R&D activities are also rising, the number of projects nearly doubled from 11 to 18. And though still small in number of projects, data centres are a growing segment as well, from one project in 2012 to six in 2013. Standing Still Is Not Option More than half of foreign companies in the Netherlands rate the Dutch business climate as good to excellent. Only 6% considers it poor to inadequate. This was confirmed by a recent NFIA survey carried out amongst more than 600 foreign companies. Moreover, rating of virtually all location factors has risen. Minister Kamp explains, “Global competition for FDI and employment is substantial and growing continuously. The Dutch point of departure is good. But, standing still is not option. In the years to come, the Dutch government will continue to dedicate itself to maintain a business climate that remains ahead of the competition. We do this by investing in decisive location factors for foreign companies such as a well-educated labour force, an excellent physical and digital infrastructure, good amenities, and further reduction of administrative burdens.”

Attractive Business Climate “The attraction of the Dutch business climate for foreign investors is a distinctive factor for employment in the future. The record number of Dutch jobs created by foreign investments last year shows that the Netherlands has an attractive and competitive investment and business climate. We can all profit from that,” according to the Minister of Economic Affairs Henk Kamp, who is jointly responsible for the NFIA together with the minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen.

The Surgery nightmare Imagine the horror of waking up in the middle of a surgery and feeling your body being cut open. This rare state called ‘Anaesthesia Awareness’ is on the rise and it could happen to anyone, says Nisrine Kreidieh… Like any other surgical patient, Reem’s anaesthesia was supposed to numb her body and put her to sleep. But as the surgery progressed, her sleep agent wore out, making her wide awake and completely aware of what was happening. To add to the horror, she couldn’t move or speak because the paralysing agent was still working, so her only option was to lie helplessly and witness every cut and stitch. She recalled the darkest day of her life saying, “I remember counting till seven before I passed out. When I woke up, I thought the surgery was over, but then I heard the doctor telling the nurse to cut deeper. Right then I felt a rush of pain and I tried so hard to tell him to stop, but I couldn’t. I had no control over my body and I felt absolutely powerless.” Another such case involved a Sarnia cancer patient in the US who felt the surgeon remove her intestines. “I could feel my intestines pop out of my body and they were laid right beside me! I couldn’t breathe because the pain was excruciating and I was so scared. I can’t even find the words to explain what I felt that day,” she wrote in a letter to the American Health Services Appeal and Review Board. According to Dr. Gilles Plourde, an anaesthesiolo-

24

APRIL 2014

gist at Montreal Neurological Hospital, an estimated 1,824 Canadians are awake during an operation every year, out of which 180 or so would have the terrifying combination of being awake and in pain. And in the US alone, the occurrence of anaesthesia awareness ranges anywhere between 100 to 200 times a day. Such a traumatic experience can leave a person with deep psychological scars, which often linger on for a very long time. It has been four years since Reem’s operation, but she’s still struggling to overcome the suffering and pain. She explained her post surgical dilemma by saying, “I’m scared to sleep on my bed because I feel it’s going to happen again. It has disrupted my life in so many ways and I don’t know how to get out of it.” Tom McKibben, past president of the American Association of Nurse Anaesthetists, explains that patients should be asked about their worst post surgical experience. He says, “If they are troubled by nightmares, recurring dreams, or any other disturbing psychological occurrences, doctors need to follow up with them. This should include counselling sessions to help patients cope with the posttraumatic stress

disorder.” Becoming Aware According to Marc Bloom, MD, PhD, “There have been a lot of different studies trying to pinpoint the incidence of anaesthesia awareness. The most common cause is when the anaesthesiologist’s judgement of the amount of anaesthesia required is not precise. Another possible cause is the patient’s physiology, which translates to drug tolerance levels. Younger age, tobacco smoking, or long term use of narcotic drugs all require increasing the anaesthesia dose to achieve unconsciousness.” This is why surgical patients need to be frank with their doctors and give them all the information required because failing to do so can cause serious physical and emotional repercussions. In retaliation to the fictional thriller ‘Awake’, a movie about a man waking up in the middle of an open heart surgery, Dr. Scott Paterson, anaesthesiologist, said, “This can and does happen in real life, but very infrequently.” He added that a mass propaganda of such a rare condition has caused hysteria among the general public. “People have a natural concern about anaesthesia because they’re dealing with the unknown. A movie like this will do nothing but heighten their fear of

anaesthesia and surgeries in general.” But, there’s a silver lining to this movie; it has successfully managed to raise general awareness about this possible horrific outcome. Even though this condition is rare, the number of cases has increased over the years. This is a shocking development and one which must be stopped at all costs. As patients, it’s our right to know about anaesthesia side effects, risks, possible outcomes, and past experiences. Open and frank discussion with doctors and anaesthesiologists should be a part of surgery prepping because it’s just as important. Reem, who regrets not getting enough information beforehand, said, “Now that I look back and think, I could’ve prepared myself better for the operation and avoided all the fears I face today. I urge people to research as much as they can on the anaesthesia to be used on them and to be honest with their doctor if for any reason they think they have a high tolerance to anaesthesia.”

Health Dilemmas

My father got something called Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. Can you tell me more about it? Thanks. Sofana, Jeddah Eating well, exercise, sleep - these are all things we can control when it comes to our health. But unfortunately, some health-related things are out of sight, and therefore, often out of mind. Hidden health issues can escalate for years before becoming potentially life threatening. For example, the term “silent killer” refers to fatal medical conditions that often exhibit no warning signs. High blood pressure is one such condition that many people are familiar with, but there is another very serious condition that most people have never heard of: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. More than 1 million people are living with an undiagnosed Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm - also known as AAA (pronounced ‘triple A’) - and it’s the third-leading cause of death in men 60 and older. The good news is that AAA can be managed and treated if found in time through a simple ultrasound screening test - so it’s important for boomers to know the risk factors for themselves and their loved ones so they can ask their doctor about screening, if necessary.

Ask Nisrine

What exactly is AAA? AAA is a balloon-like bulge in the body’s main artery that can burst unexpectedly. The problem with AAA is that there are no symptoms, and when the aneurysm ruptures, only 10 to 25% of people will survive. Tony Thomas of Detroit, Mich., is one of the lucky survivors. One morning Thomas woke up feeling great, and with no warnings, suffered a ruptured AAA. He was reading a newspaper, suddenly felt a gurgle on the right side of his back and quickly become incapacitated. His daughter called an ambulance and he was rushed to emergency surgery.

Email Nisrine Kreidieh at: nisrine@dazzlemagazine.com or by post to the Dazzle KSA office.

Today, Thomas feels very fortunate to have survived a ruptured AAA. He has partnered with a non-profit, AAAneurysm Outreach, to become an advocate for their ambassador program - made possible by Medtronic, Inc. - spreading the word about AAA risk factors and the importance of screening.

Age: Individuals 60 or older are most likely to develop this condition. Gender: AAAs are between five to ten times more common in men than in women. However, research shows AAA may be more deadly in women. Family History: 15% of those with AAA have close relatives with the condition. History of Smoking: Tobacco users are eight times more likely to be affected than non-smokers. Other Health Conditions: Including clogged arteries (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure (hypertension), and high cholesterol. “I want to urge others to learn about AAA and get screened if they are at risk. I didn’t have that opportunity when I was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery,” says Thomas. “It’s important for others to know that a simple ultrasound screen can help save your life.” If you or a loved one may be at risk for AAA, ask your doctor about a simple ultrasound screening. Visit www.AOutreach.org to learn more. 26

So who is at greater risk of developing AAA? Risk factors associated with this condition include:

Ask Nisrine

A quick and painless ultrasound screening of the abdomen, similar to a pregnancy ultrasound, can easily detect the condition. In just a few minutes, a doctor can determine if AAA is present and if corrective action is necessary. The good news is that at least 95% of AAAs can be successfully treated if detected prior to rupture through screening and most health plans cover AAA screening tests at no cost for people who fit the risk profile.

Apple It On Who says recipes only relate to food? Check out these simple apple skincare recipes and discover the pleasure of making your own cosmetics… Most skincare products of billion-dollar cosmetics giants are packed with synthetic ingredients. Even the so-called natural cosmetics aren’t always so natural. Some still have a high percentage of chemicals, additives, and preservatives. These chemically enhanced products often harm our skin and deprive us of a fresh, youthful look. This is why many supermodels and actresses are now resorting to the miracle fruit, the apple, to make themselves look naturally beautiful and vibrant. Apple is highly antiseptic and rich in minerals and vitamins A and C. It prevents the proliferation of bacteria, viruses and yeast that usually trigger infection. In addition, the Malic acid present in the fruit is a natural alphahydroxy acid that gently exfoliates, smoothes and brightens dull complexions. Besides having amazing healing properties, apple cider vinegar keeps skin supple and smooth - its heavy concentration of enzymes helps peel off dead skin cells, leaving the skin toned and healthy. With all these skin benefits that it possesses, it’s safe to say that an apple a day certainly keeps the 32

dermatologist away! Zit Blaster This homemade recipe is the easiest and most effective way of popping those extremely annoying pimples: Soak a slice of apple in boiling water and wait until it becomes soft. Then, remove from the water, wait until it’s just warm, and place on the pimple. Leave it on for twenty minutes and clean the area lightly with a moistened cotton ball. Natural Exfoliation Process the apple in a small food processor, add apple cider vinegar and blend further. Add milk, oats and honey powder to the mixture and process until a smooth mixture forms. Transfer the mixture to a small bowl, add essential oil to it and stir well. Allow the mixture to rest in the bowl for about fifteen minutes; this will thicken the mixture a little and make it easier to work with. Massage into skin and keep it on for twenty minutes, after which you should rinse and apply moisturiser. Facial Mask Remove the core of the apple, cut into quarter pieces and drop it in a food processor. After processing for thirty seconds, add honey and

blend until the mixture is thick and lump-free. Refrigerate the mixture for ten minutes and pat it onto your face with a light tapping motion until the honey feels tacky. Leave the mask on for thirty minutes and then rinse clean with normal water. Toning Treatment Cut the apple into chunks, place these in a blender and blend until a pulpy juice is formed. Apply the pulp on your face avoiding the eyes and mouth area and keep it on for twenty minutes. Rinse thoroughly and apply a light moisturiser everywhere other than your T-zone. Use this mask at least once a week for best results. Another very effective toning treatment uses apple cider vinegar with other natural ingredients: Blend 2/3 cup witchhazel with 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar and any essential oil of your choice. Once it becomes a thick mixture, pour it in a clean bottle and shake vigorously. Use a cotton ball or pad soaked in this toner and apply evenly to the face. Witch-hazel is a gentle astringent, apple cider restores your pH balance and the essential oil soothes the skin!

Natural Beautifiers Here are some other neat natural wonders for a more beautiful you: 1. To remove a tan, apply a well-blended mixture of egg white and honey. 2. For oily skin, mix 1/3 cup cocoa, three teaspoons of heavy cream, 1/3 cup ripe papaya, 1/4 cup honey, and three teaspoons of oatmeal powder and apply on your face. 3. To refresh your skin, cut a lemon and rub the wedge all over your face. Leave it for about twenty minutes and rinse off with cold water. 4. For dry skin, blend honey, lemon and vegetable oil. Apply this mask for ten minutes and rinse off with cold water. 5. For blemishes, apply carrot juice daily.

Can you tell me what are the best practices for healthy and professional pedicures? Abla, Riyadh

Whether you’re getting ready for a romantic evening out, or looking ahead to when sandal days are back again, treating your feet to a pedicure can help you look and feel your best as long as you keep foot health front of mind.

Ask Sonja

It’s important to ensure your pedicure is done properly, whether you’re doing it yourself at home or enjoying a professional treatment in a nail salon or spa. The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) offers some pedicure pointers to help you love how your feet look and feel: Start with a good soak in warm water for at least five minutes. This will help soften calluses and prep feet for removing dry, rough skin. To exfoliate, use a pumice stone or foot file. Never use a foot razor to remove dead skin, and ban your pedicurist from using one on you. It’s too easy for a quick slip-up that could cause permanent damage or lead to serious infection. Shave your legs a day or two before your professional pedicure, but not the day of. Shaving can cause minor abrasions and fissures in the skin, allowing bacteria to enter while your feet soak or the nail technician handles your feet. A little bit of stubble won’t bother her at all.

Confused about makeup? Having a problem making the most of your features? What products to use? Ask Sonja to solve your problems!

When doing a home pedicure, use toenail clippers with a straight edge and cut nails straight across. Avoid other cutting tools, such as manicure scissors, as they can increase the risk of ingrown nails. For salon pedicures, bring your own tools; shared tools can spread bacteria if they haven’t been properly cleaned. Use an emery board to smooth and round nail edges.

Look for foot-friendly products that have earned the APMA’s Seal of Acceptance or Approval. Podiatrists have evaluated these products and found them to be beneficial to foot health. Finally, never put up with foot pain. Discomfort and pain that lasts longer than several days could be a sign of a more serious problem or infection. Seek treatment from a podiatrist - the foot and ankle expert.

34

APRIL 2014

Answer source: Brandpoint.com.

Post pedicure, don’t walk around in flimsy flip-flops, especially the ones salons sometimes give customers before they leave. They don’t provide adequate protection or support for your feet.

Ask Sonja

Remove polish after it’s been on for a while. Keeping nails polished for extended periods may promote fungal growth. Leave toenails polish-free for a few days between pedicures.

sonja@dazzle-magazine.com

Never permit a nail technician to cut or trim cuticles, which protect nail beds from bacteria. Instead, use a rubber cuticle pusher or liquid remover to gently push back cuticles just a little bit. Use a wooden or rubber manicure stick - never metal or anything sharp - to clean beneath nails.

Technology

Talking Smart Home Tech Homes are more technically advanced than ever before, providing homeowners with sophisticated sound systems, high-tech security capabilities, and interactive entertainment systems. The good news is that you don’t have to be a techie to turn your home into a smart home. Not only is technology improving, it is also becoming more user-intuitive. “Home is where the smart is,” says home technology guru Dr. Frank Viggiano,

52

APRIL 2014

Professor Emeritus of Consumer Electronics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. So, if you’re interested in turning your home into a smart home, Viggiano suggests the following ways to bring technology in and make your life easier: Cut The Wires The latest audio technology in both living room and whole-house sound systems include Bluetooth-enabled speakers and sound bars, allowing you to stream music from your

compatible smartphone, tablet, or computer anywhere in the house. You don’t even need to turn the system on any longer - just push ‘play’ on whatever device you’re using, and enjoy the tunes coming through the surround sound speakers you’ve either installed or strategically placed around the home. TVs That Make Entertainment Easy TVs have come a long way from just showing the programming aired by the local

station. Smart TVs like the newest ones with LG’s webOS platform make broadcast TV, smart TV content, and media stored on external devices accessible via one click on a ‘launcher bar’ menu - no more hunting the depths of a complicated menu system. These TVs will even recommend content for you based on what you’ve previously watched to help you sort out what’s available. Print To Go Viggiano says if you

have an office at home, having your printer accessible and easyto-use is important. However, with many families making their computers mobile, connecting to the printer hasn’t always been easy. Now printers are Wi-Fi enabled, allowing you to send a document to the printer from your laptop or tablet in another room. You can

continue working at your location and just pick up all your documents from the printer when you’re ready to go. Comfort At The Push Of A Button Set the temperature, turn off the lights, or turn on the alarm anywhere, anytime. Smartphone software programs now allow you to automate your home’s electronics like lights, thermostat, alarm system, and even your smart appliances, so you can turn items on or

off anywhere your phone has internet access. So, if you’re sitting on your couch enjoying your favourite movie on your smart TV and you forgot to check your washer cycle, with a quick check on your phone, you’ve resolved the situation without having to press pause on the movie. Limit The Clutter All too often your

living room coffee table becomes a hub for countless remotes. For instance, Viggiano points out that if you have an LG Smart TV, its Magic Remote has universal capability, so it’s able to control most cable and satellite boxes as well as other LG devices like sound bars and Blu-ray players. Also, a lot of electronics can now be controlled by smartphone apps, so that’s another route for consolidating the clutter. “These aren’t your

grandfather’s devices,” says Viggiano. “But they’re designed to be, meaning they can be installed quickly and easily, and you don’t need an engineering degree to figure out how to use them. So if you’re looking into giving your home a technology boost, these upgrades will make your life easier and provide you some entertainment as well.”

A medley of bold and shy colours adorns the Ritz Club Lounge, where two different styles are combined to create a unique aura. The room is primarily traditional with beige sofas and simple centre tables, but this conservative look is perfectly contrasted with audacious blue chairs and modern hardwood tables. Keeping in line with the traditional appearance, the walls are kept simple with matching curtains and lamps. To give the room more depth, hardwood

flooring and windows with minimal frame detailing are also added. In contrast to the Lounge, the Ritz lobby imbibes a more modern appeal with its sharp and enterprising décor. The furniture used is essentially dark but with a spontaneous hint of soothing, light colours; while the chairs and tables are in shades of black and blue, the lamps are white and they neutralise the dark effect to create a warm, inviting appeal.

While the former lobby was more serious and toned down, this lobby beams with brightness and pastel colours. Once again, two different styles are combined to give the room a lively and classy feel; day chairs and tables in simple green and wood detailing give it a pristine finish, while beige English-style sofas add more pizzazz and taste to the overall dĂŠcor. The white walls add simplicity and are matched with the elegant carpet that cov-

In addition, a bold and essentially ethnic carpet is

added to complement the reds and blues used on the chairs and tables. When it comes to bedrooms, shades of orange blend with wooden detailing. To contrast this hot look, the walls and curtain trimmings are dressed in pastel green and white respectively, and white rugs are used to break the overall theme in a calm, subdued manner. Bedding is kept simple yet elegant, with little or no detailing on the sheets; maintaining this toned down look helps accentuate and highlight the beauty of the other aspects of the room. One such aspect is

All in all, the Ritz villas are a perfect culmination of modern day design and stately luxury. Snowy Serre Chevalier Take a well-deserved break from Saudi heat and head on to the snow-clad mountains of Serre Chevalier‌ Located in the southeast region of France, the Serre Chevalier region is made up of sixteen villages spread along the Guisane valley. The main villages are Monetier, Villeneuve, and Chantemerle, which along with the rest of the villages posses a unique and truly special charm of their own. Some villages are beaming with tradition and culture, while others provide all the benefits of a modern resort. But,

58

APRIL 2014

the one thing they all have in common is the same great skiing experience they provide. Situated two hours away from Turin airport, Serre Chevalier is loosely divided into four resorts, namely 1200, 1350, 1400, and 1500. Every village in each of these resorts is fully equipped with comfortable accommodation, impressive infrastructure and a commendable skiing area. All these

villages combine to provide an amazing choice of ski runs; there are a total of 111 accessible downhill runs that suit all levels of expertise. And it doesn’t matter if you find yourself in the wrong village at the end of your run because an efficient bus service is always available to transport you back to your base. Beginners can learn the sport on the gentle lower village slopes and

take advantage of the easy-to-use bubble lifts to get up the mountain. There are also special ski schools for youngsters where learning is as fun as possible. Those with intermediate skills will find it the ideal destination because of the blue and red runs that cover the whole area. And advanced skiers will find challenging runs with vertical drops like ‘La Casse du Bœuf’, ‘Le Tabuc’ and ‘l’Olympique Luc Alphand’. You can also get a taste of the natural environment on the wild slopes of ‘Le Col du Vent’ and ‘Le Cibouït’, or choose to go night skiing in Briançon on the Vauban run. Popular Valley Villages ‘Le Ville d’Art et d’Histoire’, meaning the town of art and history, is a village from where

you can ski to the heart of the highest town in Europe, at the foot of Lautaret pass. The town is full of pleasant surprises mainly due to its mix of old fortified town architecture and modern new buildings. It’s a picture perfect vision of cobbled narrow streets, fountains and fortifications. Make sure to take a guided tour to discover the delights of the fortress ‘Fort des Tëtes’. Chantemerle is the hometown of the three time skiing champion Luc Alphand. Here, you can find the famous long black run ‘Olympic Luc Alphand’ that has been named in his honour. The complexities and somewhat challenging aspects of this run make it a dream destination for people with intermediate skiing skills. This village also

has a very nice central area where you will find ski lifts and all the necessary amenities from supermarkets to restaurants and bars. Villeneuve, situated in 1400, is perhaps the liveliest village in the region with a perfect blend of both modern and traditional landmarks. In fact, there are three centres to Villeneuve. The Pre Long is where you can find tourist information and a selection of ski shops. Aravet has shops, restaurants and bars, as well as a half-pipe. And the old village also has a selection of bars and eateries. All these areas combine to offer two nightclubs as well as all the amenities you would need on your ski trip. Villenueve probably has the best access to skiing of all the villages.

Dazztrology Aries March 21 - April 20 The bad news is that Mars, Pluto, Jupiter, and Uranus are in a battle. They’re causing a showdown between you and a partner/rival about your home life and career. This has been going on for months, but it peaks this month. The good news is that this is the worst of it and it will begin to get better. You have an opportunity to create a positive grand finale within your partnerships/rivalries sector, and some really nice financial and professional energies come forward during the final days of the month. Taurus April 21 - May 21 You should be able to accomplish a professional goal or to at least get rid of a client, co-worker, tedious project, or old tools and equipment that have caused you more headaches than they are worth. You also get to launch a new project or goal that you feel especially personally connected to. There is an on-going drama that is brewing in the background and it comes to a peak this month, but these other two events will overshadow it most of the time. Gemini May 22 - June 21 Your social life, playtime activities, and finances are a mess; each one conflicting with the others. It’s not as if you can’t have any fun or you can’t achieve your financial goals; you just can’t do both at the same time - for now. Your career is still on track and things are progressing nicely in that area of your life, and you’re right to give yourself permission to be happy and to find a way to create inner peace for yourself towards the end of the month. Cancer June 22 - July 23 The battle between you and a partner/rival has been mostly centred on your father, boss, public reputation, leadership roles, or professional goals. Now, your mother, roommates, houseguests, home life, or retirement plans are also completely enmeshed in the battle. It can feel as if everyone is blaming you for the big mess or they are all looking to you for magic solutions. The good news is that this is as bad as it gets and things are about to fizzle out soon. Leo July 24 - August 23 Yes, the mess at work boils over into a big mess this month. But, you actually rise to the top as a leader and as someone worthy of respect and admiration because of how well you’ve handled yourself. There are also financial benefits that could be coming your way as a result of how well you work to mediate the situation. You’re either taking on an official leadership role or you’re getting a new boss, which might just make all the difference in the world. Virgo August 24 - September 23 Both of your financial sectors are clashing on and off this month. They’re also clashing with your playtime and social sectors. And at one point, all four are in an uproar at the same time! But, despite all of that, this is actually a good time to begin planning a vacation, embarking on some kind of an intellectual, cultural, academic, or religious journey, or beginning the process of relocating to a new city. It’s because of these battles that you need to make some kind of a fresh start in your life. 64

By Skye Thomas Tomorrow’s Edge

Libra September 24 - October 23

You have a huge drama involving you and a partner or rival arguing about your inability to balance your home and career this month. The good news is that you’re doing really well at work, you’re succeeding at your professional and financial goals, and you’re funnelling more money into your home life. Still, everyone is bickering and arguing. Eventually, you might just let your work and financial contributions speak for themselves. Scorpio October 24 - November 22 Your professional dramas come to a peak this month. But, the good news is that things will fizzle out pretty quickly next month. Also, you and a romantic, financial, or business partner agree to a new relationship, fresh start, or the two of you launch a new project together. The next couple of months will help you to get this new partnership or renewed partnership off to a great start.

Sagittarius November 23 - December 21 Both of your financial sectors are clashing with both of your social and playtime sectors this month. Unless it’s free, you’re not having much fun. The good news is that this is the peak of the ugliness affecting your financial situation. Next month, it will begin fizzling out. Also, despite having all of this negativity in your financial life, you get to launch some kind of a project, fresh start, or new beginning in your professional life that could prove quite successful. Capricorn December 22 - January 20 This is the worst month of the entire year. Your professional aspirations and your domestic needs are at war and you and a partner/rival are arguing over what to do about it. Your parents, roommates, boss, and/or high profile clients could also have a few things to say. Everyone is ticked off and everyone means well, but nobody’s willing to compromise. You and your partner/rival find time to engage in peace talks, but it hasn’t happened yet. Next month, this mess will begin to fizzle out. Aquarius January 21 - February 19 You feel as if you’re receiving some mixed messages at work. On the one hand, you’re doing really well when it comes to your financial and professional goals, but on the other hand, there’s still a lot of drama happening in the workplace. Your co-workers are struggling but you’re still managing to succeed anyway. Authority figures are recognizing your incredible sense of teamwork and tenacity throughout these dramas and this is helping them to decide to give you the key assignments. Pisces February 20 - March 20 Both of your financial sectors are clashing, and so are your playtime and social sectors. All four of these chart areas are making it difficult for you to achieve your financial goals while also having fun and spending time with people. The internet is playing a negative role in this dynamic too. The good news is that you’re able to communicate, barter, trade, persuade, bargain, and/or negotiate, so you find clever ways to stretch a dollar while also smoothing over any grumpy people involved. www.dazzle-magazine.com

The Power Of Optimism This spring, feel the power of optimism… “Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.” Buddha (563 BCE-483 BCE), Spiritual Teacher
