ased on what I’ve seen so far, I know it’s a tough period for small and medium-sized businesses. I could well imagine that outside of slow sales, there is also the difficulties in collecting outstanding receivables. ost of us are pretty familiar with the tropical fruit called tamarind and there are plenty of reasons to love it. Before we get to the benefits, it’s important to note that tamarind is quite a popular fruit, even beyond the Caribbean region. Originating in Africa, it is also popular in India, Thailand, South Asia and Mexico.

n today’s world, having a website to compliment your business is a cornerstone of success. No longer is your marketing tied down to word of mouth or expensive advertising. Now, thousands can have access to your product by simply clicking a blue-coloured, underlined link. But what happens when you’ve created the most suave website for your customers, only for it to be a deserted wasteland? In most cases, it’s because no one can even find your website. If this is the case, chances are it’s lacking Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). SEO is the thin line between having traffic entering your website, and the occasional tumbleweed blowing towards your feedback section (FYI, it’s probably spam).
So what is SEO? SEO refers to the strategies that successfully increase your search engine traffic. This refers to everyday users who find websites on a search page through engines like Google. 8 DAZZLE

The ranking your website gets on that search page is determined by the SEO strategies you employ and the words users input into the search bar which relate to your website. The goal of every business is to get on the first page of their customers’ search, so how can you do that using SEO? Here are the basic things to consider:
• The quality of your content • The algorithm of the search engine • Who your users are
Quality of Content The features of your content influence the ranking of your website on a search page. How often the content is modified is very important as search engines favour the most recent. This is why updating old content is a must. Additionally, the format of your text is equally significant. Bolding keywords, using headings and including photos to accentuate your content are just some strategies which impact your search engine ranking.
Research your users SEO focuses on understanding the customer and how they use language. Take a clothing website that sells T-Shirts for instance. Due to the line of their business, the word ‘T-Shirt’ is littered all over the website’s content. However, what if a user wants exactly that, but instead searches the word ‘tees’. If the website’s content does not include that word, it will not be included on the search page and as a consequence, it loses a potential customer. Language is governed by a number of social factors like age so tailoring your content towards your specific audience will help your website stand out.
Algorithm of the Search Engine The forefront of SEO is having an understanding of the search engine’s algorithm. However, search engine algorithms are constantly changing. Google can make up to 600 changes to its algorithm each year. What’s worse is that their algorithms are kept secret, meaning that trial and error is the only way to know what works. But hey- business is all about adapting, right?
The potential of your website regardless of its content or design will never be reached without SEO. These were just some basic ways to incorporate it into your website. We definitely recommend investing your time into it, so that your business can reap the rewards it deserves.

mar Squires, the founder and owner of ‘Lawns and Landscapes’ has made an incredible leap of faith. Having worked in the typical office job setting both in Barbados and overseas, he did what some would call a ‘full 180’ and made a total career change. That change was his creation of Lawns and Landscapes, a landscaping business. Located in Durants, Christ Church, Lawns and Landscapes was established in 2006. What first started as an outdoor maintenance company quickly expanded into an all-encompassing landscaping business. There is also a nursery, as well as services in landscaping design and construction. The company’s website is the only one of its kind in Barbados, offering online shopping for plants and other landscape items. In addition to the expertise of Omar and his employees, Omar’s determination and ambition are credited for the company’s success and growth. Lawns and Landscapes captured the top award in the Barbados Horticultural Society’s Roundabout Beautification Competition. Its creation at the Sagicor sponsored Garfield Sobers Roundabout, was adjudged the ‘Most Attractive Roundabout’ in Barbados! For Omar, that was ‘the icing on the cake’ because it was always his desire to produce work that can be enjoyed by the public. His company was also awarded for maintaining the ‘Most Colourful Urban Roundabout’ at the Travel House sponsored Dame Nita Barrow Roundabout.

Omar leans heavily on his faith in God and credits this for his achievements. However, he is not complacent and is constantly looking to be innovative in his business so that it remains successful. With tremendous creativity and staff that is known to offer a reliable service, his company is on the path to remaining one of the best landscaping businesses in Barbados. There is therefore no doubt that as Omar forges ahead with his company, he will continue to reap great rewards.
Besides being the owner of Lawns and Landscapes, who is Omar Squires? I am the son of two proud parents, a husband, father of two children and an active member in my church community. I am also someone who is trying his best to live the way God wants us to live.
Why did you decide to create a landscaping business? What motivated you? While I was at UWI pursuing a bachelor’s in Economics and Accounting, I worked with a small maintenance company for about two years. I then started a small operation but stopped to do my Masters at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. After graduating, I worked for one year [as a Financial Advisor] and can remember toying with the idea of returning to Barbados and starting a landscaping company, but at that time I was searching for a more professional opportunity based on my corporate mind-set. A few months later I returned to Barbados to find a good job, which was more challenging than I thought. The idea kept popping up in my head again ... and what made me ‘shift’, was the advice I got from my Dean at NSU. He had encouraged me not to limit myself to industries that are highly competitive, but instead to consider sectors that were underserved. While driving I agreed with God in a prayer that I would stop at the next house I see overgrown with grass. If the answer is ‘no’ I would go on with my life, if the answer is ‘yes’ I would take it seriously. There was a house where the grass was ‘up to your knees’, so I asked the owner if he wanted his lawn done. He told me to get my tools and start immediately!....I started the next day with a loaner weed whacker and I now employ 12 full-time employees and serve well over 100 customers.
List the best part of being in this business. Were there challenges? The best part of this business is being able to take a post-construction site that is ‘total chaos’… marl, grits, mountains of debris etc., and transform it into the ‘most amazing landscape’. The only thing that tops this is seeing the positive effects these services have on our customers. Constant challenges are not working in a controlled environment. There’s the extreme heat - which can cause temporary discomfort and fatigue, rain - which can sometimes cause delays and sickness and of course there’s the ever climbing cost of delivering
professional landscaping services to a local community whose average spending power decreases at the end of each budget. In light of this as an employer who cares and values his staff noted a major challenge is striking a balance between keeping our price competitive and having enough resources to pay the wages that employees need to offset the rapidly increasing cost of living.
How do you balance being an entrepreneur with other duties in your personal life? I pray and have faith as best I can and through God’s faithful response I have made it to this point and will make it as far as he allows. I have come to see first hand how his miraculous power has saved me from harm and opened doors that I could never have imagined. One example was while I resided in Florida, the overheated radiator of my sports car blew up in my face and I received not one burn despite being drenched by the scorching hot water.
What advice would you give to those who want to become an entrepreneur in general and in the area of landscaping? Find something that you really love and are good at, for your greatest marketing comes from satisfied customers, as they will generate good referrals. The need to establish strategic alliances and prudently build your staff to accommodate your rate of expansion. My father often cautions me “Omar, you must avoid rising to your own incompetence”. No matter how much you love or how skilled you are at your trade or service, it’s important to know the business side of it. Tap into associations (e.g. Small Business Association) that can give you guidance.
fun facts
Omar admits that he hated gardening as a child and never had a green thumb. This developed because he was in charge of watering his mother’s plants when she worked as a flight attendant. Although he dedicates most of his spare time to family, Omar enjoys going to the Rally and go-cart racing with his friend. He also hopes to compete in a rally sometime in the future! Omar is also a Youth Leader within the Catholic Church!

Is Walking Really Enough? By Marita Greenidge

es, as the cardio component of your health and fitness regime. No, as the sole element in a well-rounded health and fitness programme. To be well-rounded, your programme needs to include cardio, strength, balance, flexibility and nutrition. Walking alone will not cover all aspects required for good health. However, it is a great choice for aerobic fitness. Aerobic exercise is essential as it works the most important muscle in your body – your heart! When performing aerobic activities you breathe faster and more deeply in order to maximise the amount of oxygen in your blood. Your heart beats faster, increasing blood flow to your muscles and back to your lungs. Your heart gains a workout as a result of the increased pumping which strengthens the organ and allows it to pump blood more efficiently. 16 DAZZLE

Your small blood vessels also widen to allow more oxygen to be delivered to your muscles and to carry away waste products, such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid. The more aerobically fit you are, the more efficiently your heart, lungs and blood vessels can transport oxygen throughout your body.
yourself until you reach or surpass this point. If you are walking on a treadmill you’ll want to walk at a speed of 3.5 miles/hour or higher. For an additional fun activity you can measure the distance of one mile and see how quickly you can walk this mile. If you can walk in 15 minutes or less you are doing well.
Aerobic activity consists of exercise that uses large muscle groups in your arms, legs and hips and increases your heart rate. Walking fits the bill! However, because it is a less intensive form of exercise you have to walk for longer periods or do it more often to reap the benefits. Your walk should be brisk, where you can talk but not sing. Imagine the pace at which you would walk if you were trying to catch a bus that was about to pull off.
Remember if you are not at these points to begin with do not worry. Keep striving to improve each time. These points can become your goals. After you reach them, you can then set new goals for yourself.
A great place to determine if you are walking fast enough is to count your steps. 100 steps per minute is considered brisk so time yourself for one minute and see how you fare. If you are not quite at 100 steps, you can use timing your steps per minute as an activity to diversify your walk. Keep pushing
You can get a very effective cardio workout from walking but do not neglect your strength, balance, flexibility and nutrition. Good luck! T
he 27 year old mastermind behind ‘The HR Boss’- a consulting business on professional development– sat with us to divulge her passion. Interestingly enough, the HR boss’ life started in Law at the University of the West Indies, but once she realised how much it stripped away her enthusiasm, she moved to Jamaica to study Human Resources. To her, that was the best decision she made. Since then, her life has been steeped in the discipline for the past six and a half years but she refused to stop there. With a large part of her family being business owners, the entrepreneurship in her blood ran hot when she discovered that she could take what defined her and create what is now a booming online business.
So how did ‘The HR Boss’ start? The business organically came to me in my passion for helping people. My friends were going to interviews and wanted me to help with their CVs and resumes. But then they started telling their friends and it became overwhelming so I started to charge a small fee.
What did it take to start your business? $200.00 was all I needed to start the business. That included the registration which is $104.00 and the rest of the money went to the website hosting. If you can’t build a website, it might cost more.
What systems do you use to keep your online business afloat? I have several automated systems. If you send me an email … I have an assistant answering on my behalf. Also all of my social media is automated. My website has an automated scheduling tool so you can actually book an appointment without having to liaise with a person. 18 DAZZLE

How do you balance your life and your business? I have a full-time job and I travel extensively for work so I had to figure out how my business can run as a full-time entity while I’m not there. I also have an assistant. If there are queries that come via email or appointments, they go directly into my calendar and I look at them when I get home and then I work from 6:00PM until 1:00AM.
You were on tour so tell us about that. We came up with the idea of going on tour teaching people how to do interviews and resumes. We piloted it in Barbados and it sold out and then we pitched it to other islands. So the tour started in February then it went to Trinidad… then it ended in St. Lucia in May. I left for New Orleans [in June] and then I went to Orlando. There we did a specialised service where we have one-on-ones with clients.
How do you ensure that your clients get the best service possible? I try to invest in training heavily. I went to the International Society of Human Resources Managers conference and it’s a week of intense training. I also
travelled to ‘BlogHer’ in Orlando – the international female conference for bloggers. I wanted to understand how these people got paid $5000 for one post on Instagram. There are actually brands there reaching out to help smaller bloggers. I got a brand deal from Blue Host so I am their new Caribbean Ambassador.
How do you see the importance of HR in the Barbados environment? People generally don’t know how to conduct themselves in an interview… and they don’t know how to structure a resume. A lot of small entrepreneurs don’t see the importance of HR because they view it as additional costs but contracts are very important. So that’s an area of awareness that I’m trying to bring to my fellow entrepreneurs.
How do you see yourself helping persons who are looking for a job? The market is bad right now, but it makes business for me better. People always want to improve so I work with them to update their CVs and interview skills. I also advise them to create a side hustle. Before, the idea of having a side hustle was unique to North America. That situation is not common in Barbados but it’s something that I encourage my clients to have.
How can persons entrepreneur-ready?

Most entrepreneurs are free spirits so they feel as though they can dress to show that they are creative. But you can’t go to certain corporations looking like that. You have to uphold their standard of dress. As an entrepreneur, you are a walking billboard.
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?

My favourite spot is Vegas. It’s like Disney World for adults and no one judges you. My favourite food? A full rack of ribs and fries. I shoot firearms; a 22 for accuracy and a 9 for fun.
There is a myth; ‘we all have the same 24 hours’. I realised that is a lie. We do not have the same 24 hours as Beyoncé. Beyoncé has a team of people making everything happen. So I had to change my mind-set. If I want to expand I have to invest. You have to invest in proper systems so that people know you are about business.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? I would like the tour to expand to every Eastern Caribbean country. [Also] The HR Boss is not the only business I have. So the other elements of my business I would like to be as recognised as the HR Boss is.

Makeup trends come and go but one that is here to stay is a flawless complexion. Here are some skincare products that have had a great deal of buzz recently.
Charcoal. We have seen some bigger brands incorporate this ingredient in cleansers and face masks recently. The dark colour of the formula may be off-putting compared to other standard cleansers, however the products boast a deep cleanse of the skin. Incorporating Biore Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser has been one of the best decisions I have made recently. After the first cleanse I could tell the difference as my face felt cleaner. With two weeks of use, the improvement of my complexion and texture of my skin was remarkable. 22 DAZZLE

Bentonite Clay. The powder is easy to make into a face mask by creating a paste using either water or organic apple cider vinegar. The effectiveness of this product lies in the fact that when mixed with water, a mild electromagnetic charge is created. Using apple cider vinegar gives the mask astringent qualities which contributes to a clearer complexion over time. When applied to the skin it works to draw out impurities. Do not use metal utensils to mix the paste because that will deactivate the charge, rendering the mixture useless. While drying, you may experience a tingling or itchy sensation; this is the extraction of toxins from your skin. However, while the Bentonite draws out impurities it also pulls out moisture. Therefore, follow with a heavy moisturiser.
Cleansing Water. This claims to eliminate the need to use a facial wash after. I was riddled with scepticism; then I tried the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water. This product has single-handedly changed the makeup remover arena. A few drops on a cotton round removes even waterproof mascara without excessive wiping which
this condition. A brightening under eye cream will not only lighten the under eye but also strengthen the skin on that delicate area and reduce puffiness. Makeup artists and skincare enthusiasts have been raving about the Bio-Balance Brightening Eye Cream. I love this cream because it is light, a little goes a long way and it feels soothing when applied. I saw a vast improvement in about three weeks. My under eyes are brighter, and the cream also helped with the appearance of fine lines! These are some of the trending skincare products at the moment. ll of us need creativity to progress. And we need progress to feel happy. That means creativity is crucial for our fulfilment and our advancement. Being creative is not limited to artists and musicians. You might use creativity to develop a new business idea, create a landing page for your website, or create content for a presentation.
But what happens when you just don’t feel like being creative? Creativity gets killed by a lot of things around us. Most of these things are within our control to change, we just need to be aware of what they are and how to eliminate them. If you’re struggling to find creative juice, stop what you’re doing and look at what’s around you. It’s time to make some simple changes that will turn your creativity back on. 1. Worry Worry focuses on what might happen which creates anxiety in your body – an anti-repellent for creativity. Anxiety puts you on edge about all the things that might go wrong; taking your eye off the ball. Creativity thrives in comfort – an environment where you feel safe. Worrying triggers your mind to think that you are not safe and this pushes creativity to the side until that worry subsides. And let’s be honest, it may not subside at all. Get a handle on your anxious or worrisome thoughts by writing them down and setting them aside. When you allow them to fester in your mind they can feel uncontrollable. Before turning your attention to the work you want to create, get these thoughts out of your mind, onto paper and start to change your mindset.
2. Technology One of the great distractors in our lives is anything with a screen – TV, iPhone, iPad, computer, etc. If
you’re trying to throw your mind into a zone where you are creating, any device can pull it right back out causing you to struggle. When you’re going into a creative zone, don’t bring your devices with you. Let whoever needs to know that you’ll be unavailable. Respect your craft by giving it 100% of your attention.
3. Environment The environment around you can enhance or detract from your creative levels. And a lot of this depends on your personality style. Some people thrive in an environment that is quiet, clean and orderly while others love the bustle of other people like a coffee shop.
5. Tolerations
Start by figuring out what environment works for you. Do you thrive in the comfort of your own home or do you prefer an environment with people and activity? Experiment with a few locations until you determine what works best for you.
This happens to me all the time. I want to sit down to write a post but my apartment is a mess or I’ve got something really pressing to do. I try to urge my mind to be creative but these things keep nagging at me. It’s distracting and it completely vaporizes any enthusiasm I had towards creating a post. Tolerations are all the things – both intangible and tangible – that we’re putting up with. While some of these things may not seem like a big deal – like a messy apartment – they drain us of our energy. To get your creativity back, zap tolerations. Start by making a list of everything you are putting up with and then get to work on eliminating each of those tolerations. Less tolerations mean more space for creative energy.
4. Group work Chances are you either love group work or you loathe it. The problem with being creative in a group is there’s a lack of accountability and our ideas do not go as deep as when we’re thinking on our own. Suddenly, we’re screening our thoughts so they won’t seem completely ludicrous or we’re not sharing them at all for fear of being scrutinized. There is value in group work. It can be essential for staying on track with a project and keeping everyone up to date. But some level of individual work is required. If you insist on creating ideas together, let everyone come up with ideas beforehand which are all shared (and not scrutinized). Also, be selective with the personalities in your group and have someone be a mediator so the group’s time is not monopolized by the loudest person.
6. Exhaustion And then there are those moments where you have no energy left to be creative. You want it but your body just can’t give you anymore energy. Trying to force creativity is like a really bad first date. It’s uncomfortable, unfulfilling and doesn’t lead to much. Get your rest in and if you need, take a break. Make time to rest before you dive into a project requiring high levels of creativity. Also, choose times of day where you have the highest energy levels to produce your most creative work. A vast number of people are working remotely on millions of projects around the world. Gone are the days where borders exists as it relates to jobs. I
t is something that eludes some during times of stress, anxiety or upon looming deadlines, but for others, the relief that should come with hitting the sack remains but a dream.
Perry Walker wants to fix that. With gifted hands and innovative thinking, the 45-year-old certified massage therapist and entrepreneur created The SoundSleep Program for chronic insomniacs a year ago. It is offered through his company, Body Konectics, which was incorporated three years ago. “I market myself as an insomnia relief therapist,” he explains during an interview on a Saturday afternoon, “basically what it is is changing persons’ lifestyles and behaviours as well as incorporating a massage protocol that I developed.” He conceptualised the idea of developing a protocol to aid those suffering from sleepless nights while learning massage therapy in 2010 at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic. “I joked with my instructor that I was gonna come up with a cure for insomnia,” he recalls with a smile. “At first it was just a joke, but I researched more and more… and when I figured I had enough information, I developed the Sound Sleep Programme (which I first called the Sleep Well Programme), but it was scary because no one had ever done something like this.”

Perry decided to test the protocol on a few volunteers -- some of whom were using heavy sleep aids -- and received some astounding results. “There was one of my clients who by the fourth or fifth session didn’t need to take the medication. . . So I knew I was onto something.” He completed about 10 trials with individuals from various walks of life, and they were all successful. Perry has since helped between 15 to 20 people in total to achieve their dreams of sleeping through the night.
How does it work? During the four-week programme, Perry identifies the habits and environment which may hinder sleep and works with clients to modify or eliminate them. These can also include the bedroom environment, the temperature of a person’s shower, and of course, staying on electronic devices too long. Perry adds, “The thing about electronic devices is that they emit something called blue light which suppresses melatonin level and doesn’t allow you to go to sleep. While some people doze off when using their devices, they always wake up after some time. Also, they are not going to get a deep sleep. Melatonin is your body’s sleep hormone, and in order to work, it needs darkness and for your muscles to relax which comes into play with the massage protocol.”

about the programme, albeit with limited results. In fact, he was in the midst of this effort when he first heard about the Dazzle Entrepreneurship Toolkit competition. “I was writing to doctors about the programme and not getting responses, so I was mentally and emotionally drained at the time I saw it,” he admitted. “Then I decided since I already had a write-up, why not abbreviate it and send it. It was close to the deadline and I sent it in not expecting anything. “But one day while at Bushy Park, I got a call and it was Ryan who said that I was in the last five. When I got the email [that I had won] I was super elated, because at that time I had finished most of the trials and had the testimonials up [on my social media] and now I had proof that my hard work was worth it.” Perry won a Project and Public Relations consultation from Avoda Consulting, two John Maxwell Certified Personal Development Courses from Life Engineer Inc., Financial Consultancy from Astrape Finance and a Printer package from On Line Consultancies. He was grateful to receive the prize since paperwork is not his strength: “I like to interact with the clients, get to know their problems and do the hands-on work,” the St James Secondary alumni readily says. As Perry builds his business, he envisions The Sound Sleep Programme working in tandem with polysomnographic services and psychiatry. “It may take 10 or 20 years but that’s how I see it going down the line: a bunch of specialists working as one team or unit to help people with chronic insomnia.” But for now, empowering clients to end restless nights is more than enough to give Perry good dreams at the end of the day.
He loves to go to the East Coast to watch the ocean. He also notes that not getting a sound sleep can have impacts on insomnia (or vice versa) as well as on other conditions such as depression, diabetes and hypertension. Armed with knowledge and strong testimonials, Perry made a leap of faith and left his 15-year-long career as a personal trainer last year and threw his time and resources into developing his niche service. He mainly works from his St Patrick’s, Christ Church base but also makes house visits. Reaching out to medical practitioners was one of the main marketing tools he used to spread awareness

n the list of the most difficult shoes to walk in, being a parent and business owner is probably the first. It’s one thing to juggle multiple responsibilities; it’s another to have the painful feeling at every moment that you’re not doing enough for your family or your business. You ask yourself; why isn’t there more time in the day? Why don’t I have enough energy to do everything? At the end of it, life can feel like a constant tug-o-war and you’re the rope. But rest-assured that if these are the shoes you have to walk in everyday, not all is lost. You can follow these principles to make life easier.
Get a Handle on Time When you feel like there’s little time in the day, it’s usually because it gets lost somewhere else. Here’s what you can do to minimise time wastage. 36 DAZZLE

Get rid of distractions. The internet is a serious timekiller for instance. One video turns into two until you’re binging for hours. Breaks are fine but stay within a timeframe. Set an alarm if needed. Do what you can on weekends. It’s really easy to see weekends as strictly relax time but what if you worked for just a couple hours? Whether it’s cooking for the week or analysing spreadsheets, you can free up loads of time for the upcoming weekdays. Skip the extras. Take eating out for lunch as an example. The time it takes to travel to the restaurant, get seated, order your food, eat, pay then head back to work is seriously too much. Save the time by packing lunch and eating at the office. Don’t forget to check your schedule periodically. When an event gets postponed, that means you have more time to share with your family.
Get Help We all need a little help from time to time. We’re not superheroes. There’s a reason why those are fictional. Whether it’s a cleaning service to offload the chores or a nanny to help with the children, working as a team is always the best way.
Organisation is Key Sometimes we can be held prisoner by our own bad habits. One way to minimise those while aiding our time management skills is getting organised. Use the night before to get tedious morning tasks out of the way. Pack the kids’ lunches. Iron their uniforms. You’ll find that the morning bustle is smooth sailing once those are out of the way. Create schedules. Make sure everyone in the family clocks in their upcoming events and activities. This way you can better prepare for the week so you don’t miss your children’s extracurricular activities or forget to pay a bill that’s due.
Stop Feeling Guilty! Most importantly of all, understand that you actually can’t do it all! A perfectly balanced life is impossible and trying to achieve it will drain you. If you become drained, both the relationship with your family and your decision making in the business will perish. Take the time to establish limits and remember to always take care of yourself.

H
is entry into business may have been through baptisms by fire, but Joshua Hunte rises above the ashes.
In ten years, he has transformed himself from a 22-year-old party boy who had “no real care in the world for business” into an energetic entrepreneur who expanded his father’s company while also creating two other enterprises. Joshua is the managing director of Platinum Systems Inc, an electrical contracting and consulting company which has been operating in Barbados and the Caribbean for more than 20 years; Solar Watt Systems, a five-year-old photovoltaic enterprise, and LED Illuminations which has been providing energyefficient lighting solutions for the last two years. The companies in sum employ over 100 people, including a Platinum Electrical office in St Lucia. The young entrepreneur’s first fiery challenge came during his early 20s when Platinum Systems suffered a devastating fire. At the time of the tragic incident, Joshua’s parents were overseas and unreachable for two weeks. “The business burnt to the floor. We had nothing. But the next day we opened and had a staff meeting. I had to run a business at 22 years old by myself not knowing how to run a business at all. I had to keep things afloat until they got back home,” he told Dazzle magazine. However, Joshua, an only child, was able to lean on the advice and support of an “amazing” businesswoman and trusted family friend, Sharon Christie.

“I called her at 3 am [on the night of the fire]. She talked me through what I needed to do . . . and kept talking me through. She was travelling to Miami at
said the business would go under and that there was no way ‘that young boy’ would be able to run the company. He didn’t want to give us any more equipment because he figured that he wouldn’t get paid. That [supplier has since] come back begging for business.” Despite the setbacks and the losses, Joshua believes this path is his calling. “My father meant the world to me and I knew I wanted to make him proud. That’s what I did and continue to do.” Through his work, Joshua honours his father by remaining committed to his staff and celebrating the hard work that they do.

A few years later, father Russell Hunte would be slowly losing his life to cancer. Joshua describes his father as the “best father you could ever want” and the driving force in making him the person he is today. “We had a choice of whether to close the business or keep it going. My father always told me that he had staff there longer than I was alive and that the most important thing was their financial security. I wouldn’t allow a family business to go under, so I basically took initiative and fought for it. It was extremely challenging on me, not only mentally and physically, but also in making sure that my staff had a paycheque at the end of the week,” Joshua admits candidly. The budding businessman took over the reins of Platinum Systems at 25. And after the death of his father two years later, Joshua faced uphill battles with suppliers who did not believe he could successfully run the company. “We had one major overseas supplier who stopped working with us after my father died because he

They say behind every great man is a greater woman, and this stands true to his mother Carol Hunte who has always supported him no matter what. “One person does not make a company. Without great staff; you are nothing. I am able to run three businesses with over 100 staff because of great people,” he states. “…We need to treat our staff well and they need to feel like the company is like their home. Most people are motivated by money, but if you treat somebody with respect they will respect you back.” He also stays loyal to his father’s business style through innovation and a dedication to cleaner energy use. Joshua recalls that Russell Hunte was at the vanguard of renewable energy in the region during the 1980s, which unfortunately did not take off because of the high costs associated with it at the time. However, with lower start up costs, loans specifically geared to making homes and businesses greener, and a greater buzz about the potential and benefits of renewable energy, Joshua has been able to push the vision his father had over three decades ago. The businessman also makes time to keep up with the latest trends in the field of lighting and green energy through conferences and workshops in Hong Kong, the United States and the United Kingdom. His only hope is that government sees the need for stable investment in the green economy and cement their commitments through long-term policies and public education. Until then, Joshua will work 24/7 to light greener paths for Barbados, the region and the world. He’ll certainly continue to make his father proud.

Mainstream support (adding new features) will carry on until October 13, 2020 and the Extended Support, which entails security updates will last until October 14, 2025. 2. Windows 10 is the only operating system that will run on all Microsoft’s desktops, tablets, laptops and phones. Unlike Apple who constantly highlights building iOS on the core of OSX, with Microsoft Windows 10 the user interfaces of the various devices may be different but the codebase is the same. 3. Cortana which is Window’s version of Apple’s Siri is baked into Windows 10 so that you can voice-activate many commands, such as open browser, create an email, set reminders, calendar appointments etc. 4. Windows 10 now allows users to create multiple virtual desktops. So instead of having one desktop with all your programs you can now categorise your desktops. This means you can have one for work which contains all your desktop publishing applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, to name a few, and you can also have one for leisure containing games, videos, picture gallery etc. 5. If you are a gamer, Windows 10 may be your reason to upgrade. Reports have concluded that the performance gain over Direct X 12 is between 1020%, and that Direct X 12 is the future of PC gaming. Windows 10 can also stream Xbox One games directly to PCs and laptops, depending on the performance
of your WiFi. 6. Window 10 requires minimal spec in order to facilitate the upgrade. Below are the low specs needed for the upgrade: 1. Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC 2.
