Old Saybrook is a delightful shoreline town year-round, but this quaint seaside village truly shines during the holiday season . It has been featured in scenes for two recent Hallmark Holiday film productions, Where Are You, Christmas? and Sugar Plum Twist Old Saybrook was lauded last year as No. 6 in the nation’s “Most Christmassy Towns” by Mixbook, a popular photo goods brand and website. Festive decorations, welcoming local businesses, cultural performances, civic pride, and events galore make this charming town a mustvisit in December.
“My favorite thing about holidays in Old Saybrook is the community spirit,” says Jennifer Donahue, Old Saybrook’s economic development and communications director. “There is always a toy and food drive to try and ensure everyone is provided for, and our merchants go out of their way to make everything festive. I also love a good holiday light display—our downtown has really kicked it up a notch in that department!”
The 4th annual Saybrook Starlight Festival leads the season’s events Saturday, December 7. This day-
long festival features family friendly activities on the town green, including visits with Santa, games, face painting, crafts, refreshments, and holiday vendors.
“For the past couple of years, our chamber of commerce has sponsored a ‘Stocking Walk,’ where people purchase a stocking and collect small items at participating businesses,” adds Donahue. Local shops and restaurants feature special menus, live music, and other treats. Details, participating businesses, and specials are available at starlight.sayoldsaybrook.com.
The Starlight Festival concludes at 5 p.m. with the Heroes Tree Lighting at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, sponsored by the Gold Star Mothers, to honor those who sacrificed while serving the United States. “I really do love the lighting of the Heroes Tree,” says Christa Maynard, Greater Old Saybrook Chamber’s member services manager. “This happens at the end of the Starlight Festival when everyone gathers near The Kate. There are always special speakers, and it’s just a wonderful way to end the evening.”
Another dazzling tradition is the annual Torchlight Parade, now in its 53rd year. Organized and run by volunteer citizens and financially supported

A cultural icon and Old Saybrook’s most celebrated resident, Katharine Hepburn’s legacy is memorialized at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center or The Kate. This non-profit performing arts organization and historic 285-seat theater is a stately Main Street edifice. Its one-of-a-kind museum is dedicated to the actress, and the theater features a wealth of live performances year-round. In December, The Kate enriches Old Saybrook’s holiday offerings with a wide variety of performances.
“The Kate always looks forward to presenting fun holiday shows for all ages, as well as participating in Old Saybrook’s Starlight Festival,” says Kate Executive Director Brett Elliott. “It’s an honor for us to be the host site for the Connecticut Gold Star Mom’s Heroes Tree that is adorned with gold stars for the deceased, silver stars for those injured, and blue stars for those serving this country from Connecticut.”
The Kate’s 2024 season features nine different holiday shows, everything from the classic film It’s a Wonderful Life and Frosty (a musical adventure for the whole family) to performances by Grammywinning Fiddler Eileen Ivers (A Joyful Christmas), blues-rock guitarist Gary Hoey (Ho Ho Hoey), and the Celtic Tenors Christmas tour, Cherish the Ladies: Celtic Christmas and Irish Christmas in America

Other events include the Old Saybrook Historical Society’s (saybrookhistory.org) Holiday House Tour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 7. This annual fundraiser includes six festively decorated homes and the town’s historical society headquarters, the General William Hart House. Last year, the chamber-sponsored Elf Hunt was a big hit with families. Adult fun included Ladies Night and Festive Friday for late-night shopping. Additional Chamber events and Parks & Rec family-friendly activities for 2024 will be scheduled through Christmas. Visit goschamber.com for details.

From Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 to Handel’s Messiah, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra presents a season of unforgettable experiences
By Gretchen A. Peck
In 1946, Victor Norman, a Norwegian immigrant, founded what would become the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra (ECSO). He led the orchestra for 35 years as its musical director and conductor, eventually expanding the organization to include the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus and its Youth Orchestra.
The orchestra was first known as the New London Community Orchestra when it debuted. In the 1950s, the group merged with an orchestra based in Willimantic, and the name was updated to reflect the more regional reach.
In 2015, Caleb Bailey joined the organization as its executive director.
The orchestra’s home concert hall is the Garde Arts Center in New London. Bailey marveled at the theater’s remarkable history, recalling the days when it hosted vaudeville performances and later became a movie theater. The venue will celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2026.
“When you come to a concert to see the symphony, you’ll notice a big wooden box on the stage, which surrounds the musicians on three sides and above. That’s to allow the natural acoustic sound of the orchestra to project out to the audience,” Bailey says. Two decades ago, the ECSO enlisted a local boat builder to construct the orchestra shell expressly for the Garde.
In addition to its regular season performances, ECSO occasionally offers special performances. Last season, they hosted a free performance dedicated to veterans.
When COVID-19 descended on southeast Connecticut in 2020, it interrupted live performances, but a small blessing emerged from that shutdown.
“It was a good opportunity for our board to take care of some internal goals that we wanted to accomplish for a while,” Bailey says. For example, they wanted to visually rebrand their marketing.
The logo was reimagined with four color bars, each representing a component of the organization: the Friends of the
Symphony fundraising arm, the chorus, the youth orchestra, and the symphony orchestra itself.
ECSO kicks off with a 2024-2025 season opener on October 26. It will be a “special celebration,” says Bailey.
“Our music director, Toshiyuki Shimada, is celebrating his 15th anniversary this season,” Bailey says.
The executive director credited Music Director and Conductor Shimada for his “dynamic programming,” which included leading the orchestra in performances of classic musical compositions and introducing audiences to composers they may not typically hear.
“These works, alongside the masterpieces that everyone knows, really push the envelope. I think audiences and the musicians appreciate that too,” Bailey says.
They’re planning a performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 for November 23—what Bailey says is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “It’s not just grand in composition; it’s grand in the actual instrumentation. There are eight French horns, a huge brass section, a women’s chorus, and a children’s chorus. It has all these components that make it such an interesting work,” he says.
The orchestra takes a brief holiday break, allowing the musicians to perform in smaller venues, like in-

timate chamber concerts. “In the past, we’ve worked with local schools. We’ve had a brass quintet perform with a middle school choir in New London. We also support our chorus’s efforts, and this year, they’ll be performing George Frideric Handel’s Messiah on December 21 at Connecticut College’s Harkness Chapel.
“Harkness Chapel is such a good venue for this because the acoustics there are just phenomenal. It has an atmosphere that lends itself well to Messiah. The architecture adds to the experience, and the human voice in that space sounds so gorgeous. I recommend everyone mark their calendar for that performance.”
YOUTH ECSO
Led by Music Director and Conductor Kate Anderson, the youth orchestra is particularly active during
the holiday season. There are two groups within the youth orchestra: a younger group of fourth through eighth graders who play string instruments and an older group of high school-aged musicians who play brass, woodwinds, and percussion instruments.
Leading up to their winter concert each year, they travel to area nursing homes to perform for residents and staff. “It’s a great warm-up to their holiday concert and enables them to try out the material in front of a very welcoming and appreciative crowd,” Bailey says.
At 7 p.m. on Monday, December 16, the youth orchestra will be performing their winter concert at Northeast Academy Arts Magnet School in Mystic. Visit ectsymphony.com for more information about ECSO’s 2024-2025 season.

Hay Burr Inn Equine Rescue & Sanctuary gives horses a new lease on life
By Elle Rahilly ~ Photos courtesy of Hay Burr Inn
Many people assume that when an animal gets old or falls ill, it is allowed to spend the rest of its life in a peaceful, pampered environment. The reality is, especially for “working” animals like horses and other equines, that they can end up enduring abuse, neglect, and even worse trauma. “There are so many horses out there in need,” says Cynthia Haberin, a lifelong lover of horses and the founder and president of Hay Burr Inn Equine Rescue & Sanctuary in Plainfield. Her 16-acre estate is one of the only safe havens in the United States that takes in old, ill, abused, and unwanted horses for rehabilitation and a second chance at the life they deserve.
Haberin, who has considerable experience rescuing horses, responded to a growing demand and officially opened the doors to the non-profit organization in 2014. “They had no place to go, and I had the property. So, they just kept being shown to me.”
Hay Burr Inn currently has 18 equines, including horses, ponies, miniature horses, and donkeys under its care, with an all-volunteer staff working around the clock to restore the animals’ health and spirits as they recover from trauma. Equines come to Hay Burr Inn from many miles away and are often rescued from cases of starvation, neglect, and abuse. “It’s a full-time job, caring for the 18 animals on the farm,” Haberin explains.
“We feed them four times a day due to their age, medical needs, and limitations. So, every six hours someone has be out there tending to the animals.”
Volunteers at Hay Burr Inn work in shifts to oversee the grooming, feeding, and socializing of the equines, while tending to any special medical needs and individualized care they may require. “We make sure that they have hay all day and that their water buckets are always clean and full,” says board member Brittany Mallette, who helps to lead the educational programs and initiatives at Hay Burr Inn. Other daily activities like mucking stalls and cleaning paddocks ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the equines at all times.
With the exception of mealtime, a herd of horses is out on the half-mile long trail 24 hours a day, year-round.
“When they come in to eat their grain, we make sure they’re eating okay and don’t have any scrapes or blood,” says Haberin. Horses come inside to the volunteers for feeding, where they are then checked thoroughly for any abnormalities. Afterward, they go back out for the night.
One member of the herd with a particularly heartwarming story is Spirit Amour, a thoroughbred gelding off-track racehorse that was kept in isolation throughout most of his life until he came to Hay Burr Inn in 2017. “He was pretty aggressive when he first arrived,” Mallette shares. “The time that he’s had here, the time

that he gets to spend on the trail, and his interactions with the volunteers have all really helped to mellow him out. Granted, there was a significant amount of work from Cynthia specifically and a few other people, too.” Haberin notes, “He’s actually our herd leader, which is what he needed to be. He didn’t need to be locked in a stall; he needed to be a boss.”
For rescue intake, Hay Burr Inn relies on referrals from a tight network of trusted sources with a deep understanding of the organization’s capacity to take in a new rescue at any given time. One is the Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments (NECCOG) Animal Services. “We have quite a few horses here that were unfortunately seized by NECCOG from the farms they were on,” Haberin shares. “I feel honored to be sought out by NECCOG because of what we do.”
Two rescues that came to Hay Burr Inn this past May by referral of NECCOG are Nahima, a blind and sassy Pony of America mare, and her
seeing-eye horse, an Arabian mare named Sakina. “[Nahima] may be blind but that doesn’t stop her,” Mallette muses. “She’s very spicy. She’ll stand up for herself if she wants food.” Nahima and Sakina make up a foursome along with Angus, a blind Arabian cross gelding and his seeing-eye horse, a Morgan/Quarter horse gelding named Devlin.
“Coming here has given Angus and Nahima both the opportunity to be outside,” she continues. “They’re not outside with the big herd, because we have to think of the needs of them. But they have a field to wander around in, and they have each other.” According to Mallette, the blind equines and their seeing-eye companions are inseparable once their bond happens. The blind horse relies on its bell-wearing guide for everything, and the other horse whole-heartedly steps into that role. “I think that tugs at my heart the most, the bond that they have with each other,” says Haberin. “It’s amazing.”

States, horses that no longer serve a purpose for their owners are often put up for auction and sold to the highest bidder. Those deemed “too broken” for purchase at the auction are then sent over the Canadian and Mexican borders for slaughter (the United States has prohibited the slaughter of horses since 1992). Hay Burr Inn does everything it can to change the fate of these horses and take them in for refuge.
“There are quite a few auction houses we’ve rescued from, and that experience is horrendous for horses,” says Haberin. “They get no food or water during their trip, and then they meet a horrible death.” According to Haberin, slaughter numbers reported by the USDA have dropped from roughly 150,000 to 20,000 horses per year over the past decade, a testament to the impact of the critical work of animal welfare organizations like Hay Burr Inn.
A recent auction intercept brought two of Hay Burr Inn’s newest rescues to the farm this past April—a Dutch Harness mare named Maeve and a Belgian gelding named Gandalf, coming in at approximately 19 hands and a whopping 1,800 pounds. Both came from a farm where they were utilized intensively as workhorses and arrived at Hay Burr Inn underweight and frightened of people.
“You couldn’t approach Gandalf when he first got here. If you made eye contact and took a step in his direction, he would turn the other way,” Mallette shares. “Fast forward about three months, and he’s standing there getting scritches from everybody at our most recent event. He loves people. You cannot go into his pen for more than three minutes without him standing next to you, waiting for you to scratch his withers.”
As Hay Burr Inn continues to grow, the organization’s need for volunteers increases as well. Newcomers to the farm start by getting to know the animals and learning about what the organization does. “Then whatever talents you have or may want to share, we are more than open to having you help us,” says Haberin. “We take everyone,” adds Mallette. “We have a training program so new volunteers can learn the ropes, everyone stays safe, and the equines can get the care at the level they need.”
In addition to working directly with the horses, Hay Burr Inn also welcomes volunteers to help with the several fundraising initiatives it hosts throughout the year—organizing a fundraiser, setting up for an event, or even acting in its Haunted Trail and Winter Walk. Other opportunities include the distribution of materials (such as hay), groundskeeping, and marketing initiatives.
“Sometimes our volunteers are fellow ex-horse owners who just don’t have the means or the space to own their own horses, but they miss it,” says Mallette. “While others just think horses are so pretty and want to learn about them.” Because the entire Hay Burr Inn staff consists of volunteers, 100 percent of all donations goes directly to the rescue and care of the equines. “My biggest regret is not being able to take in every horse in need,” Haberin reflects. “If

we had the resources, we would absolutely save more, but we can only spread ourselves so thin. And we have a responsibility to the animals here.”
Volunteer opportunities are congruent with education and awareness initiatives at Hay Burr Inn. The organization has various educational forums and volunteer programs for local youth and disadvantaged communities. It also works with schools in the area for job coaching, school-to-work programs, and community service.
As the non-profit celebrates 10 years of impact, Haberin is hopeful for the work that Hay Burr Inn and other organizations are doing to protect and advocate for equines on a local and national scale. “The past of these horses is their past, we know it was horrible for most of them and we can’t change that,” says Haberin. “But they come here, and it’s the first day of the rest of their lives. They are given the opportunity to just be horses and allow us to love them. This is their last stop.”

Hay Burr Inn is ringing in the holidays this year with two of its greatest annual fundraising events, where the property comes to life with festive lights, decorations, and spirits. “We usually have the equines out [at events] so that guests can say hello and get to know a little bit about the rescue, our equines, and their stories,” says Malette. “Then they get to enjoy the beauty of the property and the fun things that we have on the trails. House of the Triple Moon offers a blend of ancient practices and modern community in Essex

There aren’t many places for witches in Connecticut. Those who want to practice their spiritual beliefs and explore tarot, astrology, and intentional living often struggle to find a safe place to connect with like-minded individuals. With the establishment of House of the Triple Moon in Essex, that is beginning to change.
Victoria Hughes originally envisioned House of the Triple Moon as more than just a shop; it was intended to be a sanctuary where people of all backgrounds and ages could learn, grow, and connect through spiritual practices. Over time, Hughes' dream became a reality and expanded beyond her initial intentions. Now, House of the Triple Moon regularly hosts moon circles and provides a cozy environment for tarot and astrology readings by professional practitioners.
When Hughes moved to Connecticut 15 years ago, she noticed a lack of places to go for “witchy supplies and camaraderie " throughout the state. This was especially true around Essex and the shoreline area.
“I thought that I should open up a place because I wanted to be able to have events,” Hughes says. “Moon circles are great. Just people kind of coming in to have
a safe space to talk about whatever spirituality they wanted to talk about, or whatever is on their mind. And that’s our ultimate goal, which is just making the shop a place where you could come and chat, maybe have a reading, or maybe just have questions.”
With its beautiful gardens, the lovely Connecticut River, and kind people, Hughes thought Essex was the perfect place to envision the “new Salem.”
“It could be like a new place for you to go to for all your needs. And if one shop doesn’t have it, we can, you know, we can tell you who does, kind of thing,” Hughes says. “It feels like that would be such a great community, and I would love eventually for that to happen.”
Tarot and astrology are ancient practices that offer guidance and insight into one’s life using intuitive techniques. Tarot cards use symbolic imagery to interpret situations, and astrology studies the influence of celestial bodies on human affairs. Oracle cards are more flexible versions of tarot cards that can add customized and added context to readings. Mediumship, on the other hand, is the practice of communicating with the spirits of the deceased.
At House of the Triple Moon, tarot, astrology, mediumship, and more are embraced and explored. Many people come in with questions such as how to get rid

of negative energy in a home or what the different cycles of the moon mean. Visitors can enjoy personalized tarot and astrology readings, participate in moon circles, and shop for spiritual supplies. The house also offers workshops, events, and classes led by guest readers and experienced practitioners, making it a haven for those seeking spiritual connection and growth in a supportive community.
“Most of the readers who come in are so gifted, and they can do so many different things,” Hughes says. “They work with their spirit guides. They work with tarot cards and oracle cards, birth charts, and mediumship. We have a really great assortment, and we get a lot of guest readers.”
With the establishment of the Teen Witch Academy, it has become a welcoming haven not only for adults but for children and teens ages 12 to 18. Hughes
allows the students to lead the class, focusing on their interests and exploration. They have concentrated on mediumship skills, protection, and grounding.
“They wanted to learn about mediumship. I was like, ‘I know a lot about mediumship, but I’m not an expert.’ It took me about a year to find somebody, but our good friend Michelle Pellin came in, and she did a mediumship class with them,” Hughes says. “They loved it, you know, and it’s really nice because it’s people who really connect over this, and they’ve now had a safe space to come to.”
Hughes, who has been practicing witchcraft for 30 years, says the goal is to teach everyone who visits to follow their intuition. Many people have misconceptions about spirituality having rigid rules. For example, people who come in for candle rituals get hung up on what color candle
“To me, all of spirituality really, but all of, like, even witchcraft is about living with intentions, and that’s what I wanted to teach my kids, like if you really want something, you have to work for it. You have to take the steps to get there, and you have to be intentional about what you do.” Victoria Hughes

they should use, whether green for money or yellow for joy.
“It’s very personalized; you just need to decide what you feel most comfortable with. It’s all the intention you’re putting into it. It’s all your energy. The candle is just there,” Hughes says. “We really try to get people to see that they already know what they’re doing. We’re just kind of helping you see that you don’t have to follow a book or a recipe. You can add in your own things and make it more tailored for you.”
“It’s really about working with yourself and making yourself better,” Hughes adds.
Hughes says her interest in witchcraft started at a time when witchcraft wasn’t accepted.
“When I had my children, it was an interesting time, the early 2000s, and this type of thing wasn’t as accepted,” Hughes says. “So I had to be more in the closet because I didn’t want my kids to go to school and be known as the weird kids.”
Preparation for a protection spells class at the Teen Witch Academy.
As her children grew older, Hughes explained more about her practices and incorporated them into her parental values.
“To me, all of spirituality really, but all of, like, even witchcraft is about living with intentions, and that’s what I wanted to teach my kids, like if you really want something, you have to work for it. You have to take the steps to get there, and you have to be intentional about what you do,” Hughes says.
At the heart of the House’s mission is teaching people to follow their intuition and work on selfimprovement, making it an extraordinary place for spiritual growth.
House of the Triple Moon is planning a fair on October 5 at Essex’s town green. Hughes says she hopes to have readers, vendors, and events.
