If there is one thing I’ve learned over the past year, it’s this–Risk it! Venturing into unfamiliar territory and putting ourselves out there is not naturally instinctive for most of us, least of all me, but as I have embraced the unknown these past 12 months, I have experienced exhilaration, heartache, and everything in between. Most of all, though, I’ve grown and found personal fulfillment in ways I did not know were possible. The ‘Be Your Best Self’ principles of the Distinguished Young Women program have inspired me to ‘risk it’ over and over again, prompting growth in virtually every aspect of my life as a result.

One year ago I was privileged to be selected as the Distinguished Young Woman of Pocatello/Chubbuck for 2023. Amid all my excitement, however, it did not take long for reality to set in as I immediately sensed I now had duties to perform, service to give, and an example to set in my community.

At that time, the war in Ukraine had been raging for several months, with media frequently depicting families being torn apart by the thousands. I wanted to find a way to help them and decided that my ‘Be Your Best Self’ project would become my avenue. I discovered ‘Lifting Hands International,’ (LHI) an organization that distributes aid to refugees all over the world. So, I organized a food drive for Ukrainian families right here in Pocatello, asking local friends and neighbors to donate the foods they needed most. To spread the word, I advertised on social media and had fliers distributed throughout the community, explaining how people could get involved. (Special thanks to Bengal Works Graphics for donating six hundred high quality flyers!)

The project was a huge success and with the generous support of so many I was able to collect over one thousand meals and, with LHI’s help, ship them directly to Ukraine this past September! Doing this food drive taught me a few simple things

that have helped me view service in a different light. I have come to know that service really is the BEST way to be your best self. As we lift others we are blessed with a greater capacity to love, a more grateful heart, and a deeper sense of joy! I have also realized that sometimes when we believe we’re reaching people in their hunger or in their need, more than anything we’re reaching their hearts and showing them that there is still so much good and so much hope in the world today.

Another way I ‘risked it’ this year was by representing our community at the Idaho State level DYW Program in Idaho Falls last October. In preparation, I spent countless hours during the summer practicing for the interview, studying for the ACT, rehearsing my talent, and of course doing cardio workouts every morning to prepare for Fitness! I was SO excited I even reached out to all the participants beforehand to make sure everyone would have a familiar face once we all got there.

The week of State was AMAZING and I developed the best friendships with 34 of the most incredible, talented, and distinguished girls in Idaho. I was lucky enough to stay with the sweetest host family and had such a fun roommate! We spent the majority of our days practicing our Fitness, Self-Expression and Opening Number routines. When we weren’t doing that, we were attending interviewing and public speaking workshops and also participated in a service project organizing diaper bags and hygiene kits for local organizations.

The much anticipated State program was held at the end of that week. The caliber of young women, their intelligence, eloquence, fitness and incredible talent were admittedly intimidating, but they only encouraged me to step up, believe in myself, and ‘risk it’ yet again. I was stunned to have been selected as one of ten finalists to perform again for the evening program and, when that concluded, I

was honored to be awarded scholarships for Talent as well as my ‘Be Your Best Self’service project for Ukrainian refugees. Most exciting of all, I was selected as the 2nd Alternate to the Distinguished Young Woman of Idaho for 2023.

Shortly after state, my family and I acted on a unique opportunity to take a roadtrip into Baja, Mexico and provide service for five days to the Buena Vida Orphanage over Thanksgiving break… and yes, we definitely did ‘risk it’ driving through Tijuana, only occasionally did my dad get lost. :) In the mornings we were busy painting their living quarters and pouring cement walls, floors, and stairs we mixed by hand to enhance the livability of the orphanage. The best part, though, was spending the afternoons and evenings playing with the children, laughing, and getting to know them. The language barrier seemed non-existent and by the time our pinata fiesta farewell came at the end of the week, it was pretty heartbreaking having to leave those beautiful kids.

When we got home, my attention immediately turned to preparing for The Nutcracker ballet, the Universal Ballet Competition in Denver, and two different Youth America Grand Prixs in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. Being a senior in high school, the pressure was on to perform well and ensure that ballet is still able to play a major role in my life after graduation. I competed in these competitions and, knowing this was my final opportunity, risked it again, giving everything I had to impress the judges with hopes of earning scholarships. During these three competitions I was thrilled to receive high scores, placing in the top 12, top 15 and top 24 with my contemporary and classical solos. Best of all, I received a full tuition scholarship to dance at the Joffrey School of Ballet in New York City this summer!

As I look back on this past year, there is no doubt that my experiences with the Distinguished Young Women program have had a major impact

16

on each of these accomplishments, giving me added confidence to take risks and reap the rewards I did. This program would not exist were it not for certain people who have a true love for young women and are passionate about empowering them to achieve their potential and, in fact, be their best selves for decades to come. I want to take this opportunity to especially thank my chairman and dear friend, Kayla Cruz, for the countless hours of guidance and preparation she gave me for the state competition, and countless more preparing for tonight’s production and all that has gone into this beautiful experience for 24 more girls. Sarah Johnson has also been a tremendous blessing in my life and helped me extensively over the past year. And, of course, I would be entirely remiss if I didn’t thank my parents, Paul and Natalie Bitton, for their endless love and support through it all. There are so many others I wish I could add to this thank you list. To each one of you who has done so much for me –and you know who you are– please accept my profound gratitude for every sacrifice you have made, and every kindness you’ve shown, on my behalf.

To the 24 girls who participated tonight, I want to personally congratulate and commend you for ditching your comfort zone, stepping up to the DYW challenge, and ‘risking it’ the way you did tonight. You guys absolutely killed it! You are all amazing and you have so much to be proud of.

And, to the 2024 Distinguished Young Woman of Pocatello Chubbuck– you, my friend, are in for the greatest adventure of your life. So keep ‘risking it,’ keep being your amazing self, and go get it, girl!

Signing off with love,

Anna Lee Bitton
