Building positive family relationships

The ordinary, everyday things that families do together can help build strong relationships with teenagers. Regular family meals are a great chance for everyone to chat about their day, or about interesting things that are going on or coming up. If parents encourage everyone to have a say, no one will feel they’re being put on the spot to talk. Also, many families find that meals are more enjoyable when the TV isn’t turned on!

We should all take turns choosing outdoor activities for our families. A relaxing holiday or weekend away together as a family can also build togetherness.

One-on-one time with the child gives the parents the chance to stay connected and enjoy each other’s company. It can also be a chance to share thoughts and feelings.

Parents should celebrate the child’s accomplishments, share his disappointments, and show interest in his hobbies. Sometimes it’s just a matter of showing up to watch the child play sport or music, or giving him a lift to extracurricular activities.

Family traditions, routines and rituals can help parents and their children set aside regular dates and special times. For example, we might have a movie night together, a favourite meal or cooking session on a particular night, a family games afternoon or an evening walk together.

Agreed household responsibilities give kids of all ages the sense that they’re making an important contribution to family life. These could be things like chores, shopping or helping older or younger members of the family.

Audio script

Today we'll discuss the changes in roles performed by men and women in the family. Changes in family life have made men's and women's roles more alike than ever as the wives are also responsible for the family finances.

T F

Family experts say the old notions of who does what in families may be more and more unclear. Men are not the sole breadwinners for the family like they used to be and they are becoming much more involved in housework and parenting.

Because men's and women's roles in families have become more alike, for couples to balance their work and family life, perhaps, 'equally shared parenting' is the best solution. 'Equally shared parenting' means the 'conscious and purposeful sharing' in four domains of life:

l. Child-raising: Both parents have equal responsibility to nurture and to take care of the children-

2. Breadwinning: Husband's and wife's careers are equally important;

3. Housework: The household chores should be equally divided between the wife and the husband;

4. Recreation: Both partners have an equal chance and time for their own interests, and of course, to be with each other.

Experts have found out that families that can keep to those four principles of 'equally shared parenting' become happier and the divorce rate is the lowest amongst them.

I think children should do housework for a number of reasons.

2. How often / When do you do it?

3. What are the activities? What does each family member do?

4. How do you feel about the routine?

SAMPLE ANSWER:

In my family, we have a few routines to follow, one of which is having breakfast together. Every morning, we get up at 6:00. My sister and I help my mum prepare breakfast. My mum often cooks rice, meat orfish and vegetables for breakfast. Sometimes, we have bread, eggs, and butter for a change. She says a big meal in the early morning will help us work or study better during the day My dad gets up a bit later and helps with laying the table. At about 6:45, we all sit down and have the meal together. During breakfast, we talk about what each of us is going to do during the day. My parents sometimes give us some advice about what we should do at school. At 7:30, we all leave home for work or school. Having breakfast with my family every morning makes me feel closer to my parents and sister and helps me more prepared for the day.

III-READING:

E7: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Many of the major supermarket chains have come under fire with accusations of various unethical acts over the past decade. They've wasted tons of food, they've underpaid their suppliers and they've contributed to excessive plastic waste in their packaging, which has had its impact on our environment. But supermarkets and grocers are starting to sit up and take notice. In response to growing consumer backlash against the huge amounts of plastic waste generated by plastic packaging, some of the largest UK supermarkets have signed up to a pact promising to transform packaging and cut plastic wastage. In a pledge to reuse, recycle or compost all plastic wastage by 2025, supermarkets are now beginning to take some responsibility for the part they play in contributing to the damage to our environment with one major supermarket announcing their plan to eliminate all plastic packaging in their own-brand products by 2023. In response to criticisms over food waste, some supermarkets are donating some of theirfood surplus. However, charities estimate that they are only accessing two per cent of supermarkets' total food surplus, so this hardly seems to be solving the problem. Some say that supermarkets are simply not doing enough. Most supermarkets operate under a veil of secrecy when asked for exact figures of food wastage, and without more transparency it is hard to come up with a systematic approach to avoiding waste and to redistributing surplus food.

Some smaller companies are now taking matters into their own hands and offering consumers a greener, more environmentally friendly option. Shops like Berlin's Original Unverpakt and London's Bulk Market are plastic-tree shops that have opened in recent years, encouraging customers to use their own containers or compostable bags. Online grocer Farmdrop eliminates the need for large warehouses and the risk of huge food surplus by delivering fresh produce from local farmers to its customers on a daily basis via electric cars, offering farmers the lion's share of the retail price.

There is no doubt that we still have a long way to go in reducing food waste and plastic waste. But perhaps the major supermarkets might take inspiration from these smaller grocers and gradually move towards a more sustainable future for us all.

E8: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

The green building movement, started in the 1970s as a way to reduce environmental destruction, is changing the way buildings are constructed. In the early years, green builders were a small minority, and their goals of reducing the environmental impact of buildings were considered unrealistic. Now, however, the movement is growing, as builders have been able to take advantage of new technology.

Green builders try to make use of recycled materials, which means less waste in dumps. Also, they reduce environmental impact by reducing the energy requirements of a building. One way is to provide an alternative, non-polluting source of energy. First, with solar panels, it is possible to produce electricity from the rays of the sun. Once installed, they provide energy at no they cost and with no pollution.

Another solution is to reduce the amount of energy required in a building. It is possible to cut electricity use noticeably by improving natural lighting and installing low-energy light bulbs. To reduce the amount of fuel needed for heating or cooling, builders also add insulation to the walls so that the building stays warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

One example of this advanced design is the Genzyme Center of Cambridge, the most environmentally responsible office building in America. Every aspect of the design and building had to consider two things: the need for a safe and pleasant workplace for employees and the need to lessen the negative environmental impact. 75 percent of the building materials were recycled materials, and the energy use has been reduced by 43 percent and water use by 32 percent, compared with other buildings of the same size.

In other parts of the world, several large-scale projects have recently been developed according to green building principles. One of these is in Vauban, Germany, in an area that was once the site of army housing. The site has been completely rebuilt with houses requiring 30 percent less energy than conventional ones. These houses, heated by special non-polluting systems, are also equipped with solar panels.

A larger project is under way in China. The first phase of this project will include houses for 400 families built with solar power, non-polluting bricks, and recycled wall insulation. In a second phase, entire neighborhoods in six cities will be built. If all goes well, the Chinese government plans to copy these ideas in new neighborhoods across China.

Green building ideas, on a small or large scale, are spreading. Individuals, companies, and governments are beginning to see their benefits. Not only are they environmentally friendly, green buildings improve living and working conditions and also save money in the long run.

In response to criticisms over food waste, some supermarkets are donating some of their food surplus. However, charities estimate that they are only accessing two per cent of supermarkets' total food surplus, so this hardly seems to be solving theproblem.

Online grocer Farmdrop eliminates the need for large warehouses and the risk of huge food surplus by delivering fresh produce from localfarmers to its customers on a daily basis via electric cars, offering farmers the lion's share of the retail price.

There is no doubt that we still have a long way to go in reducing food waste and plastic waste. But perhaps the major supermarkets might take inspiration from these smaller grocers and gradually move towards a more sustainable future for us all.

D. Farmdrop stores large amounts of food and produces unnecessary waste.

To reduce the amount of fuel needed for heating or cooling, builders also add insulation to the wallsso that the building stays warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Harry: Hey there!

Olivia. Hi, Harry, come and have a seat!

Harry: OK —I'll just get a coffee. Hang on ... Where's Tony?

Magda. He's off sick.

Olivia: And you'll notice that there's a new chef in here!

Harry: Carlos! What's he doing working here?

Magda. He's taken over while Tony's away.

Harry: Well, good on him —he's always wanted his own restaurant! I guess this café will have to do for now.

Olivia: Yeah. It's good experience for him!

Harry: Carlos! Hey, Carlos! Could I have a coffee, mate?

Harry: Carlos? Hello!? ... Well, I hope he's a good chef, because he's a terrible waiter!

Olivia: Oh, go on. Give him a break!

Magda: Yeah —it's really busy in here right now. Be patient!

Harry: Busy? Yeah —tell me about it! Everywhere is today —I couldn't find anywhere to park my car. I had to leave it miles away.

Olivia: Park your car? I thought you took your bike everywhere! Harry: Well, I used to, but sometimes it's just easier to drive, isn't it?

Magda: Lazy!

Harry: I'm not lazy! I do lots of sport —play football every week.

Olivia: Do you drive to the football pitch?

Harry: Erm, yeah ... Usually

Olivia: You should use your bike more often. It's better for you, and for the environment!

Johnny: Hello, all! Hey, is that Carlos behind the counter?

All: Yes, it is.

Johnny: What's he doing there?

Olivia: Long story!

Johnny: Blimey Have you seen the traffic out there?

Olivia: Not you as well?!

Johnny: Me what?

Olivia: Driving!

Johnny: Of course I drive. How else would I get around?

Magda: I always use public transport. It's very good here in London, even if it's quite expensive.

Olivia: Not as expensive as a car.

Harry: That's true.

Olivia: You should all cycle more!

Johnny: I'm not cycling. It's tiring, and dangerous!

Harry: And the weather here is terrible —cycling in the rain isn't any fun!

Magda: That's true. That's why I get the tube or the bus.

Olivia: Well, I think you should all think about your health and the future of the planet!

Harry: Yeah, yeah, yeah ... whatever .

Olivia: It's important! Cars make so much pollution!

Magda: Yeah —Olivia's right!

Johnny: Scientists are finding ways to stop pollution —that's their job.

Olivia: Maybe, but we should all help to help the planet!

Harry: I don't know about the planet. I just think right now we should try to help Carlos!

Secondly, I should start using public transport like buses or trains instead of asking my dad to drive me. This will reduce the harmful gases in the air, therefore making it cleaner. One of my favorite TV music showsis The Voice of Vietnam. It is a singing competition on televlsion purchased from the original "The Voice" by Cat Tien Sa and broadcasted in Vietnam starting from July 8, 2012 on VTV3 channel.

I know this program through some means of media such as TV andmagazines, The Voice is rated as one of the most popular entertainment programs. This comes from not only the coachesthe outstanding faces of the entertainment industry but also how to choose contestants attractively. There are some reasons why I like it. Firstly, it's new and different from other shows. The typical feature of the program is that in the blind audition, in order to select contestants for 4 teams, the coaches will rotate the seats back to the stage and only choose the contestants basing on their singing voice. The program's criterion that the voice is more concerned than the appearance is considered as the new point and has attracted a large number of viewers. In addition, the coaches are Vietnamese leading singers and composers. Theyhave got a sense of humor and a real enthusiasm for potential young singers, which partially helps them reduce stress. The show is interesting and it's worth watching it!

Coaches also have the power to decide on which contestants to advance in the next rounds. One celebrity key advisor gives assistance to the coaches and their teams during the preparation process.

The coaches and the television audience have equal power to decide who moves on to the final four phase. However, the winner is determined by votes from the television audience by online voting on the official website, SMS text and iTunes stores purchases of the contestants' performances. Subject: My favourite singer

Dear Linda,

I am writing to tell about my favorite singer, Celine Dion.

She is a Canadian singer and was born in 1968. Celine Dion is a pop singer with melodious songs. However, her songs are also influenced by several genres like rock, classical, gospel etc. Her music touches the hearts of millions of people around the world including fans of different ages.

I admire her a lot because of her lucid voice and attractive performance style. Her songs are not associated with musical noise. They have some special inner meaning instead. In addition, her big devotion to her musical career interests me. Her talent is shown by her singing in several languages such as French, Chinese, English, Italian, Latin, Japanese, and Spanish. Moreover, she won a lot of important awards, for example, five Grammy Awards including "Album of the Year" and "Record of the Year". All of the above reasons show why she is my favorite singer.

Best wishes, Nancy
