As we age, our teeth tend to shift. However, wearing retainers and having them properly adjusted when needed will help stabilize the correction and maintain your beautiful smile for a lifetime. Once the orthodontists has determined that full time wear is not needed anymore, wearing the retainer nightly will help prevent shifting and maintain the position of your teeth. If a retainer is lost or broken, call and schedule an appointment with the orthodontist as soon as possible to get a replacement.

I can hear my child grinding his/her teeth from the other room at night time, is this normal?

A:

Night time grinding (bruxism) is often a major concern for some parents. This is normally due to the fact that it can be very loud, they may notice a shortened appearance or wear of the teeth and parents don’t understand why their child may be doing it. Bruxism is the forceful contact between the chewing surfaces of the teeth that can occur while awake or asleep. The causes of bruxism can range from emotional stress due to a new environment, changes at school, dreaming, and neurological disabilities, to unbalanced dental occlusion, jaw muscle toning and pressure in the inner ear while laying down. The majority of cases in the primary (baby teeth) and mixed (some baby teeth and some adult teeth) dentitions do not require any treatment.

It is a self-limiting condition that usually does not progress to adult bruxism. Reported complications include dental wear in the primary dentition, along with headaches soreness of the jaw muscles and TMJ dysfunction in the adult dentition. If grinding continues into the adult dentition, a night guard may be needed.

itting at a restaurant recently, I saw a sad sight.

A sight I’ve been seeing a lot lately. A family was there together only they were apart. They were all on their phones. The mother put her phone away then nudged her husband who begrudgingly did the same and then they got on their three kids about it. Everybody looked unhappy. I saw that all in the course of about a minute. We ate and on the way out we passed that family again and you’re right, they were all engrossed again, separate. Why had they gone to dinner together anyway?

For years “experts” have forced the idea down our throats that we should eat dinner together as a family every night. That works out fine when your kids are little and in your hands. But as they get older they grow apart from you, start closing the door to their room and rolling their eyes when you “bug” them for something or other.

It’s a sad state when families don’t have an awareness of what’s OK and what’s not OK. I think it’s rude when people hang on their phone’s every text or post or Candy Crush in the presence of others.

Except when you’re standing in a line by yourself ... or at a traffic light by yourself ... or on your sofa by yourself ... But if you’re with friends or more importantly with your kids, shouldn’t you at least try to be together?

When children are little, they want you to watch them. Watch them swing, watch them play, swing

with them, play with them. If you send them the message that they are second to the phone you’re a slave to, they will learn that, too. Where will that leave you when you’re older? Nagging at them to pay attention to you when you’re at dinner and you’ve finally had some sense knocked into your head.

The idea of balance is back. Moms used to struggle to balance work and family and we realized that you can’t — there’s no balance possible, it’s a no-win situation even if you work from home. There is always a tug to do what you need to do whether it’s your work or your laundry.

The balance idea isn’t just a working mom issue anymore, it’s a family idea. With children holding cell phones in their hands when they’re babies, pretty soon we won’t need to be families anymore because we won’t know what it means to be one.

Here’s what it means to be a family: You look at each other when you talk. You put down your phones when you eat or when you watch your child at his soccer game. You seek out ways to be together because family life is fleeting, it does not remain forever. Soon enough you’ll be longing for the time when you had to change diapers and get a little one to eat his broccoli.

Don’t be a boring old phone addict. Your kids want you, all of you, not the half-paying attention you, the full you. You’ve only got them for so long. Why on earth would you lessen that time?

They used to be located in Hendersonville, which took us less than 10 minutes to get there.

Now, they’ve moved to Gallatin and it takes about 30 minutes. If they decide to move again I will definitely follow and make sure my kids are only seen by Leeanna and her staff.

Don’t ALWAYS drop your little one off when you workout — take her along, sometimes!

Check out these tips.

Use your kids as weights or just play sports with them in the backyard.

I use my two under 2 as weights — they fly and my arms get toned. Additionally, I have three older children, and we swim and play sports together (like kicking a ball around). I’m certainly not skinny, but they keep me on my toes!

I do my Beachbody workouts while my son naps in the afternoon. I work 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. part time Monday through Thursday, come home, put him down for a nap and get right down to business. If I sit down I won’t make it to working out!

Yoga goes great with kids.

I wear my 3-month-old in my Moby wrap and push my 5-year-old and 2-year-old in our sit and stand stroller. They usually won’t let me go more than a mile, but either way that’s a lot of weight to be carrying and pushing.

I do yoga at home and my 4-year-old likes to do it with me.

With my older kids we’ll ride bikes (not as much as I would like because it’s sometimes too hot) or play soccer together.

When she was smaller, I’d put my daughter in her exersaucer while I worked out. Now at 21 months old, she loves to exercise with mommy! She knows how to do jumping jacks, squats, crunches and even her own version of a push-up! Her daddy and I load her up in her Step Two car for family jogs — she walked almost a whole mile the other evening with us around the block! She LOVES exercise!

Create warm-up dice out of foam dice. Use one dice to write down six exercises. Roll all the dice and count how many of which exercise they need to do. Also a math game for little ones.

You’re not bilingual, but you’re thinking about starting your child on a second language. What age is best, and will you learn the language, too?

It’s never too early to start!

Some metro schools already require foreign language in elementary. My daughter has taken Spanish since kindergarten. It’s never to early to start!

Growing up in a household with two languages makes it easy for kids to learn early on.

My children grow up in a Spanish household. They are fluent in both English and Spanish. In middle school I’ll be able to start them in French. Children are like a sponge, they soak up everything.

I’ve taught my daughters from the beginning how to count in Spanish and German. They say it sticks with them for life if they learn it before the age of 5 or 6. I know I had a Spanish class in second grade and remember more from that then the four years I took in high school.

Got a Cold?

NOT ME. Help kids maintain a strong constitution by following these simple tips.

Feed them a balanced, healthy diet

Make sure they get good exercise

Each meal you prepare should include colorful fruits and vegetables (fresh are best) to help boost your child’s immune system. Give them broccoli, strawberries, oranges and other foods with vitamin C. Make sure they get plenty of calcium and vitamin D. Yogurts with probiotics can help with immunity, too.

Regular, moderate exercise can reduce the number of cold and flu episodes your child gets over the year up to 50 percent.

It also makes your child’s lungs and heart stronger, strengthens his muscles, builds stronger bones and keeps weight off. In fact, regular exercise boosts your child’s immune system so much it wards off diseases.

Get the kids the flu vaccine Want to avoid the flu? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says it’s the single best way to prevent it.

Flu season starts in October, but the flu vaccine for the 2014 - 2015 season has already begun shipping to providers. Learn more about the upcoming flu season at cdc.gov.

Love them some bedtime Doctors say not getting enough sleep can practically double your child’s risk of getting a cold or flu. Make sure your kids stick to an early bedtime. Babies need up to 14 hours of sleep a day; preschoolers need 11 - 13 and school-age kids need 10 - 11 hours a night. If your kids don’t get enough sleep during the school week, let ’em sleep in on Saturday!

Try not to touch your face Since cold and flu viruses enter your child’s body through the nose, eyes and mouth, encourage your child not to touch his face if he can help it. It’s hard! If your child doesn’t have a bath before bedtime, at least have him wash his hands. Yes, it can be very difficult to accomplish — hand-washing at strategic moments is all the more important.

Know the basics Hand-washing, not sharing cups or straws or toothbrushes ... these things can be taught fairly easily. Teach and repeat over and over again.

Keep sick kids home If your child has a fever, don’t send him out to play. Help other kids stay healthy by keeping your sick child home and getting him the rest, fluids and TLC he needs.

Get the kids back into the school groove with these fun crafts.

Homework Door Sign It’s going to be homework central at your place soon enough and kids’ll need quiet! Let them make a sign to hang or stick on their door to let you know they’re working on their homework.

What You Need Red and yellow construction paper Sticker letters Foil tape Clear packing tape Scissors Pencil

What You Do • Take a yellow sheet of construction paper and draw out a big pencil shape. There’s no need for a point as you’re just referencing a pencil and not being exact.

• Cut out an eraser shape out of the red construction paper that is the same width of the yellow shape you cut.

• With a piece of the foil tape, tape the two pieces together.

• Apply the sticker letters to the yellow section in whatever spot you want them.

• Once all the letters are in place, you can take two strips of the clear packing tape and lie them over the length of the pencil sign.

• Flip it over and put more pieces of the clear packing tape on the back. This acts as a lamination.

• Cut off the excess of the clear packing tape. Now it’s ready to stick to the door.

You can do this with more tape, or you can attach a ribbon and hang it from the doorknob.

1. Immediately delete the bad.

3. Set albums in storage. As you download your photos, keep them organized in albums by topic or date to make them easier to search later on.

ay the word, “Branson,” and you might automatically assume it’s a destination for old people. Big misconception!

Branson, Mo. is full of family fun. It is definitely the live show capital in the United States. Did you know that Branson actually has more seats than Broadway in New York? It sure does. Fifty theaters with multiple live shows await, and a lot more, too.

THINGS TO DO It’s possible not to know where to start in Branson. Shopping opportunities are in store, and the one place you need to visit is Dick’s Oldtime 5 & 10 (dicksoldtime5and10.com). This retail store is like a museum with more than 50,000 novelty items featuring classic toys and a lot of stuff that will blow your mind.

Dick’s is big on the WOW factor.

Itching for more shopping?

Head over to the Tanger Outlet Mall (tangeroutlet.com/ branson). There, you’ll find more than 65 brand name designer stores that include clothing, food and accessories. Stop by Harry & David for some goodies, and your kids will most likely want to make a stop at the Disney Store.

Attractions for all ages are more than plentiful in Branson.

An absolute must is the Acrobats of China show (acrobatsofchina.com). More than 40 performers fill the stage doing stunts that are amazing.

Your kids’ mouths will drop by what these acrobats can do, showcasing strength and dexterity — especially in the scene where a ballerina is on pointe on top of her partner’s head! From start to finish, it’s an

exciting show.

Yeah, that’s right. It’s just like the game show on TV, and the host of the show is none other than Jerry Springer. Even if you don’t get called up to the front, it is a major blast to experience.

When the announcer shouts out a name, saying, “Come on down!” you will be cheering even if it’s not your name. Audience members who get called down have the chance to get on stage to play games just like on the TV show — games like Plinko, Cliffhangers and Punch-ABunch. Then there’s the spinning of the Big Wheel and the showcase showdown. This show is a ton of fun And Springer is a hoot! He pokes fun at himself and the contestants all in good humor.

Looking for a little adventure?

Head to Wolfe Mountain for the Branson Zipline tour (bransonzipline.com). Have fun zipping through the Ozarks canopy on three different course options. The longest one, however, ends with a 100foot free fall drop ... if you’re so daring, go for it!

An absolute must on your visit with your kids in Branson is the World’s Largest Toy Museum (worldslargesttoymuseum.com).

More than 1 million toys are on display, and it’s everything you can imagine going all the way back into the 1700s. You will have fun reminiscing when you see classic fare that you had when you were a kid. Your kids will be awestruck as they

wind through the mazes of this fabulous museum.

Want to sink into some history? Then head to the Titanic Museum (titanicbranson.com). Yes, we have one in Pigeon Forge, but the one in Branson was the first. It’s an amazing museum documenting the ill-fated journey of the “ship of dreams.”

You get a card going in with an actual passenger’s name and detail. The very last exhibit room features a wall with all of the passengers’ names in alphabetical order, sorted by class. You’ll find out if the passenger on your card survived or not.

Hop aboard the Showboat Branson Belle (showboatbransonbelle.com) for a dinner cruise on Table Rock Lake that comes with an amazing live performance by The ShowMen. Your kids will be amazed by Janice Martin, the violin-playing aerialist. Martin’s art is outstanding. She alone is worth this outing.

Sheer family entertainment comes by way of The Baldknobbers (baldknobbers. com). It’s the oldest running show in Branson — more than 50 years — and it is great fun.

You’ll enjoy hearing some great country standards and having a chuckle at several comedy skits in between.

The big boy in Branson is Silver Dollar City

(silverdollarcity.com). It’s the most famous attraction there and boasts being named “America’s Best Theme Park” by USA Today. The park features lots of entertaining familyfriendly shows and lots of thrill rides, including the world’s only wooden coaster that twists upside down. It also has an oldschool classic coaster — Fire in the Hole — an indoor coaster with high-speed drops and thrilling surprises along the way.

There’s lots of great eats at the park, and you’ll definitely want to take the kids to the ice cream parlor there. The mint chocolate chip is the bomb.

An interesting component about Silver Dollar City’s locale is that it evolved around a great wonder — Marvel Cave. It was discovered circa 1500 AD by Osage Indians, and it features one of the largest cave entrance rooms in the United States, 300 feet below the surface.

WHERE TO STAY The Village at Indian Point (thevillageatindianpoint.com) offers very cozy accommodations with a great view of Table Rock Lake. It’s only a couple minutes from Silver Dollar City, it has a really nice swimming pool and the rooms are equipped with everything you need for a decent stay.

Read to Your Baby

onight in Nashville, a mother is building her daughter’s brain, without lifting a finger. Well, except to turn the pages of The Going-to-Bed Book

Parent-child reading helps prepare infants for future learning, observes Danielle Z. Kassow, Ph.D., of the Talaris Research Institute, a non-

profit research organization studying early brain development.

“Experiences with parents help the brain get organized,” Kassow says.

“Any experiences that are loving, warm, nurturing — such as singing, playing or reading together — affect the wiring of the brain.”

Positive memories of snuggling and reading Goodnight Moon build an enduring interest in books. After all, as adults, many of us still relax

before bed with a good novel. In order to create a budding bookworm, take the time to read with your child consistently.

Plus, reading together boosts long-term success, Kassow points out, because it increases attachment. “Research has found that when children have a secure attachment to parent in infancy,” Kassow says, “they have better responsiveness to reading when in toddler and preschool years.”

Here are more tips for reading with your infant:

CAPTIVATE YOUR BABY’S SENSES Brain areas controlling vision and sensory integration are the first to develop, say University of North Carolina researchers. So it’s no surprise that babies love titles with touchable fur, bright colors, scratch-and-sniff strawberries; or books that squeak, rattle and crinkle.

ACCEPT THE NUTRITIONAL CONTENT OF BOOKS Infants explore with their mouths — in fact, all that tasty cardboard is good for your curious child. They see books as an everyday object they feel comfortable playing with, rather than an off-limits treat. “It’s great for a young child to hold the book, and put it in their mouth,” Kassow says. Keep books easily accessible, so your baby

can crawl over and pick one up whenever she’s curious.

SING A STORY Babies love poems, songs and nursery rhymes, particularly when they’re sung by a parent or other trusted caregiver.

Once you’ve got a book memorized (it won’t take long) try singing the text while in the car, or waiting at a doctor’s office as a distraction. You may be building long-lasting verbal skills, too — a recent study from Georgetown University suggests that music and language share the same brain real estate.

SELECT BABYFRIENDLY TOPICS Animals, routines (bedtime, getting dressed), food; or books with many simple, bright illustrations and few words.

Talk about what you see on each page, and don’t worry about following a narrative. Kassow points to studies showing that children exposed to a wide variety of words have a better vocabulary by school entrance.

SEE READING AS A FORM OF PLAY Don’t feel silly putting on a show while reading — making funny noises, speaking dramatically, or in “parentese,” the sing-song voice that parents worldwide use to converse with babies.

Your enthusiasm demonstrates that “books can be exciting and entertaining,” Kassow says. Plus, many researchers believe

parentese helps prep baby brains for the natural patterns of everyday language.

BILINGUALISM AND BOOKS According to research from the University of Washington, baby brains learn language from human interaction, not expensive foreign-language videos. If you’re bilingual, you can help baby’s future fluency by reading books in your native (or second) language.

Too busy for books?

Don’t despair. Once babies start crawling, they may not want to stop for stories. A couple of strategies: read during mealtime, playtime or bathtime. You can read to your child as she motors around the room. Kassow suggests keeping reading sessions short: “It’s fine to stop halfway through, and come back to the book later on.”

Nestle on the couch or before bed — with a book in one hand and a babe in the other. Your child will enjoy the sound of your voice, particularly if it’s part of a comforting nighttime routine.

Kassow acknowledges that some parents don’t feel comfortable reading aloud to an infant. But don’t wait until your child is a toddler to bestow the benefits of a good book.

“It starts right from birth,” Kassow says.

Reading & Early Development The next time you take your baby to his well-child visit, don’t be surprised if your pediatrician hands you a board book. With the release of The American Academy of Pediatric’s (AAP, aap.org) policy statement promoting reading aloud to infants (it came out last June), the aim is to get parents, kids and books actively engaged.

With the increased recognition that an important part of brain development occurs within the first three years of a child’s life, the AAP’s recommendations add scientific and medical heft to what has, up until now, been more of a “feel-good” message according to John Hutton, M.D., author of the Baby Unplugged series.

“It means that we’ll start to view reading failure as a health problem,” he explains. The more words infants hear from someone who reads and talks to them consistently, the better their language development and phonological awareness will be.

Because the AAP guidelines are a step toward bringing pediatricians into the ongoing conversation of early literacy — and the first time the academy has officially weighed in on early literacy education — your doctor may bring up the value of parents and children reading books together as a catalyst for other developmental milestones.

READ FIRST, SWIPE LATER The AAP’s involvement shows good timing: many parents today give their babies smartphones and tablets, allowing them to learn to swipe even before they read ... increasing the jeopardy that reading is already in.

“The pivotal thing with the AAP recommendations is that it reinforces the scope of the problem with reading,” says Hutton. “A large part of the population is at risk for reading failure — kids who don’t have access to books or a positive message about reading. The AAP recognizes the need to get back to basics, and the value of unplugging.”

In representing upwards of 62,000 pediatricians across the country, the AAP hopes that by encouraging parents to read early and often to their babies they may save them a lot of trouble later on when the struggles of remediation set in.

By aiming to make reading together a daily fun family activity from infancy, the hope is that parents will not only enhance their child’s communication abilities, but plant the seed in their kids that reading is good, healthy and absolutely necessary for lifelong learning.

What’s the Worst That Can Happen?

If your child is worried about someone being mean to him or being excluded at lunch or some other scenario that leaves him fretful, talk it out, says Michael Parker, author of Talk With Your Kids: Conversations About Ethics — Honesty, Friendship, Sensitivity, Fairness, Dedication, Individuality and 103 Other Things That Really Matter (Black Dog & Leventhal; 2013). Parker says a great tool to use in a hard conversation with your child is to ask, “What’s the worst that can happen?”

Let your child envision and talk about what the worst thing would be and then counter that by asking him what the best thing might be. Sometimes this kind of exercise can really help a kid (and you) in seeing how good things may actually outweigh the bad.

Back to School Secrets of “A” Students

Most kids aren’t “brains,” they just know a few things that make the grades better.

Here’s a rundown of tricks to help your child excel.

• THEY ARE PARTICIPATORS Top students know that teachers factor participation into their grading (some more than others). Participating in class shows that you’re paying attention and it helps the teacher know who you are more than he might if you simply sit and never answer or try to add to the conversation. Encourage your child to ask questions. Help him learn how to ask by play acting at home, suggests the book SchoolFamily Partnerships for Children’s Success (Teachers College Press; 2005). And let your child know it’s OK to be wrong: Being wrong is another way of learning. Tell him there are no dumb questions and keep on working with him at home to get comfortable in coming up with questions.

• THEY’RE ORGANIZED Successful kids learn early on how to keep on top of their things. If your child’s digging hopelessly through his backpack in search of a loose piece of homework, more support is needed. Put up a big wall calendar just for him. Together, write down important test, assignment and project dates. Decide when homework should be done and put it on the calendar. Put “Library” on there so he can keep up with his books and any other “specials” he has like a music lesson or soccer practice. Get him in the habit of checking the calendar daily.

Also, be sure he has a folder in his backpack for each day’s academic work. Set aside time so you can review work together, ask questions, praise successes.

Teach your child that as soon as he learns a project or test date he should start working on it so he’ll have plenty of time to get it done without having to cram everything in the day or two before it’s due. Studying for tests can be done in 15 minute increments for several days over a period of time. Many educators encourage kids to make flashcards for tests.

Simply writing something down helps to embed an idea. Teach your child about setting goals for himself, and encourage him to tell you if he’s having difficulty understanding a subject or concept so you can get him help.

Keeping up with assigned reading is what top students do. Kids who think the teacher can’t tell if they read the work or not are setting themselves up for failure. If you have a reluctant reader, it may be best to read the material with him. Eventually your child will learn that it’s so much better to be ready than it is to slink down in a chair and hope not to be noticed, or worse, be called on and not have an answer. In his book Getting Straight A’s (Lyle Stuart; 2000) Gordon W. Green, Jr., says the secret of good reading is to be “an active reader — one who continually asks questions that lead to a full understanding.”

• THEY KNOW THERE’S HOMEWORK & THEY’LL DO IT ANYWHERE Top students keep up with what’s happening in class by doing a little studying every day whether it’s assigned or not. If your child consistently comes home saying “No homework!”at least have him do some pleasure reading for 20 minutes or so. Plenty of kids say they do their homework during study hall or “lab” or some such. Make it clear to your child that if that’s the case you want to see it to be sure he understands the work.

Busy kids sometimes have to do their homework on-the-go (it’s not uncommon to see a kid studying at a hockey tournament).

If work gets done at home, make sure you have the supplies your child needs and a working printer for your computer. In the book Homework Made Simple: Tips, Tools, and Solutions for Stress-Free Homework (Advantage; 2010), find simple strategies such as mounting a dry erase board next to the bathroom mirror so your child can study his spelling words while he brushes his teeth! You get the idea.

• THEY SET PRIORITIES Top students allow no intrusions on study time. Once the books are open or the computer is booted up, the cell phone gets switched off.

Study is business, and business comes before recreation.

• THEY TURN IN CLEAN PAPERS Neat papers are likely to get higher grades than sloppy ones. The student who turns in neat papers with his name legible at the top is already on the way to an “A.” To a teacher, a child’s work is like being served a meal: No matter how good it really is, you can’t believe it tastes good if it’s presented on a messy plate.

• THEY DO A LITTLE EXTRA On a special project, for instance, if the required number of facts is five, a top student will turn in 10. If the teacher asks the class to read ahead, the top students will do it and be ready to participate.

The Case for Kids & Creativity

Creativity, once viewed as a nice-to-have-butnot-necessary trait, has become the most crucial factor for future success, according to a 2010 IBM global CEO study. If success requires fresh thinking and innovation, why on Earth is creativity so undervalued in public education?

ou never hear school reformers talking about how we need to train more teachers in the arts, do you? You DO hear public school art, music and drama teachers lament that arts get the shaft at their school: kids are lucky to get an art class a week. It’s no wonder the arts get the shaft given the current obsession with standards and testing related to science, math, technology and engineering (STEM). Annual federal funding for science is $5 billion, but only $250 million for the arts.

But with creativity valued so highly today (it’s the driving force behind corporate success), one has to ask, shouldn’t we be taking a look at how to get more arts education to our kids?

“Right now we are grooming our kids to think in a very particular way, which assumes that the right way to be thinking is to be attentive, to stare straight ahead — which is why we diagnose 20 percent of kids in many classrooms as having attention deficit disorders, when the research is actually more complicated,” says Jonah Lehrer in his bestselling book Imagine: How Creativity Works (Houghton Miflin; 2012).

Ingenuity, inventiveness and problem solving comes from creativity, yet only two years ago, research assimilated through the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) sampled from kids in grades K - 12 from 1984 - 1990 came out showing that creativity is clearly in decline among the young. Measuring creativity is the opposite of measuring intelligence: any test with questions that have just one right answer or one correct path to an outcome is NOT a test of creativity. An example of the TTCT: kids are given sample shapes and are asked to use them or to combine them in a When creative children have picture or to complete a partial picture. The Creativity Paradox

Creativity is nurtured by freedom and stunted by continuous monitoring and pressure to conform. In school, kids repeatedly take tests requiring one right answer when in truth, few problems in life have only one right solution. Meanwhile parents want their kids to be inventive and imaginative — but they also want them to perform well in school. This is looked at in Lehrer’s book. While our public education system and its social strata discourage “out-of-the-box” thinking, kids are naturally creative. So when schools emphasize rote learning, standardized tests and uniformity it shuts down creativity which requires daydreaming, hands-on experimentation and an unstructured, free environment.

We’re all born creative, imaginative beings. We have our first few years to play and explore before someone starts trying to mold us. Ask a second grader if he’s creative and upwards of 95 percent of them will answer “Yes,” says Lehrer. Three years later though, somewhere around the fifth grade, as kids begin to mature and take note of what others think about them, they begin to stifle themselves. By the time a kid’s a senior in high school, if you ask him if he’s creative, you’ll get a “Yes” from about 5 percent. Most kids would rather not suffer the embarrassment that comes from taking the risk that creativity requires. This is why, during the early years of your child’s life, and continuing as he grows, Lehrer says, it’s important to find a way to help your child let go.

Creativity Education at Home While some people think public schools should change the current emphasis on STEM to STEAM (getting the “A” for arts in there), with the current controversy in public education (aka the Common Core debacle) it’s not going to happen anytime soon. While your school may offer weekly music and art class, that’s not going to cover enough ground. You’ll have to take matters into your own hands if you want to have a creative child. Go to! out of their comfort zones and allows them to make mistakes and learn from them in rehearsal. They gain confidence to perform in front of large audiences.

3. Problem Solving: Artistic creations are born through the solving of problems. How do I turn this clay into a sculpture? How do I portray a particular emotion through dance? How will my character react in this situation?

4. Perseverance: When a child first picks up an instrument, he

knows playing Bach right away is not an option; however, when that child practices, learns the skills and techniques and doesn’t give up, that Bach concerto is that much closer.

5. Focus: Keeping a balance between listening and contributing

involves a great deal of concentration. Recent research has shown that participation in the arts improves children’s abilities to concentrate and focus in other aspects of their lives.

6. Non-Verbal Communication: Through experiences in

theater and dance education, children learn to break down the mechanics of body language. They experience different ways of moving and how those movements communicate different emotions.

7. Receiving Constructive Feedback: Children learn

that feedback is part of learning and it is not something to be offended by or to be taken personally.

8. Collaboration: Through the arts, children practice working together, sharing responsibility and compromising to accomplish a common goal. When a child performs in a play or dance or music ensemble, he begins to understand that his contribution is necessary for the group.

9. Dedication: When kids experience artistic endeavors resulting in a finished product or performance, they learn to associate dedication with the feeling of accomplishment. They develop good work habits, respect for others and respect for each other’s contributions.

10. Accountability: When kids practice creating something together, they learn that their actions affect other people. Mistakes can happen, and they do — it’s a great part of the artistic process — but in the arts, you acknowledge them and you move on.

How to Spot Your Child’s Talent

Let your children try lots of different activities until they find something they’re good at and enjoy doing: there’s a difference between programming kids to do what WE love versus loving what THEY do.

y mother thought I was a great actress because I wrote, produced, directed and acted in my own shows when I was a kid. I would cast my friends, costume everyone, create the sets, create the program and tickets. I was always performing, pretending, singing, carrying on. The truth is, theater was my passion and it never let up, not even in the tumultuous teen years, in fact it heated up. I wanted more.

Today, I am a New York-trained-professionalactor-turned-writer who edits professionally in Tennessee and who’s constantly looking for ways to feed my truest passion: acting. I get that from both of my parents (Mom was a Broadway actress, Dad a journalist and author). Luckily, I don’t remember being pushed.

I do remember declining the role of Gretel to Diane Keaton’s (nee Hall) Maria in the Sound of Music. I was 5 and I experienced sheer terror when the director tried to hoist me onto the stage. I do remember Mom’s disappointed face, but she didn’t push me and she continued to believe in me and my talent ... which is a tough concept for parents eager to feed their young child’s abilities. Innate gifts don’t show up on schedule, and when they do, they can go unnoticed.

Stay alert, says Daniel Coyle, author of The Talent Code (Bantam; 2009), “greatness isn’t born, it’s grown.”

“Oh, he’s so talented!” a friend may say when looking at your preschooler’s latest drawing of something that doesn’t resemble anything.

“She’s a natural!” Aunt Margie may exclaim after watching an after-dinner skit put on by your kids in the living room. Really? How does Aunt Margie know?

Simple: The activities we are drawn to when we are young provide the breadcrumbs for our loved ones.

“Your job is to expose them to lots of different things and then observe what they choose to spend their time on,” says Paula OlszewskiKubilius, author of Early Gifts: Recognizing and Nurturing Children’s Talents (Prufrock; 2003). Letting your child lead the way in the elementary years without pressuring him to do what YOU want is a good way to go for his later success, says Coyle.

It’s best not to encourage ultra specialization when kids are little, experts say, but to let them try as many different activities as they want to, and then at some point, allow them to make

It’s true that aptitude for music and dance may show up early in your 1-yearold who walks steadily, but also taps his toe along with complicated rhythms and moves his arms and shoulders appropriately to the beat.

A child who sings a lot and never hits a flat note obviously has a talent for vocalizing. He may reproduce melodies he’s heard from movies and recognize different instruments when they are playing, easily mimicking the sounds the instruments make.

A future painter may show a desire for drawing early on and display detail and imagination more so than other kids. A young actor may want to dress up and, well, put on shows in your basement complete with a curtain strung wall to wall and nailed in with a hammer.

Zeroing In

Different Drummers It’s not easy being a young artist because often you don’t know you are one. You can be pegged a trouble maker when you don’t fall in line at school exactly how the other kids do, but we’re not talking misbehaving ... we’re talking different. For parents, it’s not easy to advocate for artistic kids, either. Teachers may call with concerns. Educators are very familiar with differences among children who indicate problems than with those that characterize potential for arts. YOU have to educate yourself about creative aptitude — where it starts, how it manifests, develops and how you can nurture it along. Don’t force your artistic child into society’s “box.”

Nurturing young artistic talent means allowing your child the chance to play and listen to simple instruments, to dance freely, to create art and skits, delving imaginatively into make believe. When your child begins to “lean into” his interest, you can help by getting him training, furthering his creative way of seeing and being around others who are like minded. You can help him gain concentration, competence, perseverance and the optimism necessary to succeed in creative pursuits.

Like my mother, you may think your child is a great artist, but remember, his journey is his own and for the best outcome, you should get comfy in the back seat. •Pay attention to curiosity When a kid is interested in a subject, he’ll question you about it endlessly. You can feed his curiosity by taking him on field trips related to his interest.

• Don’t judge Abstain from voicing your opinion about how your child uses his free time if it’s a creative pursuit or he can lose his motivation.

• Follow the leader Realize that your child has the right to be interested in his own pursuits — don’t push him toward what YOU want for him, let HIM lead the way.

• Allow him to be influenced We gain inspiration from other artists — encourage him to see and hear great performances.

• Get training When your child decides to specialize, take training to the next level, seek out a talent mentor and continue monitoring your child to ensure that passion is the motivator. Help him seek opportunities for his specialty.
