ANNUAL REPORT 2022 – 2023

“Supporting the Dawson Fund allows us to directly contribute to enhancing the exceptional education our teachers provide, maintaining affordable tuition, and fostering a safe, inclusive learning space. Dawson’s high academic standards, hands-on learning experiences, dedicated teachers, small class sizes, and strong community create an environment where our daughters can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.“

Letter from Head of School

It is with sincere appreciation that I share our 2022-2023 Annual Report, which includes highlights of the year, donors, volunteers, financial information, and much more. I would like to personally thank everyone who contributed to our success last year; it is through meaningful partnership and the generosity of our community that Dawson continues to thrive.

This Annual Report is a testament to the impact our extended community has on our ability to fulfill our mission. This was especially true in 2022-23, when we were able to experience the greatest sense of normalcy since 2019. Among the small but meaningful traditions that returned and brought us all closer together were parents having lunch with their children in the Dining Commons, fully-attended special events such as plays, musicals, concerts, games, and Grand Day, which saw over 200 grandparents and grandfriends join us in person for the first time in four years.

Dawson is a place where relationships, experiences, opportunities, and connections to the world support the academic excellence central to our mission. Whether students’ interests lie in specific academic disciplines, global perspectives, experiential education, athletics, technology, the arts, or myriad other areas, Dawson provides an environment that allows students to shape their paths and meet the challenges of the world.

I would also like to express my appreciation once again to the Alexander Dawson Foundation. Through its generosity and stewardship, the Foundation helps to make much of what we love about Dawson possible.

As we look ahead to the new school year, I will work to ensure we remain focused on our mission of preparing students, through challenging and relevant learning, to become creative, resilient problem-solvers who bring their best to the world.

In gratitude,

• $53,336 raised on Colorado Gives Day

• 367 total donors

• 100 first-time donors

• 90 donors have five years of consecutive giving

Each year, our entire community comes together in support of the Dawson Fund. This annual campaign has a meaningful impact on the outstanding work of our teachers and all of the many programs that make the Dawson experience so personal and unique. Contributions to the campaign also keep tuition as affordable as possible by minimizing the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Dawson education.

Parents, guardians, grandparents, faculty, staff, trustees, and alumni made Dawson a priority by contributing $542,817 this year. These funds supported many wonderful projects and programs throughout the year and allowed the school the flexibility to respond to our community’s ever-changing needs.

Thank you for your generous support!

Dawson’s Dazzling Evening at Sea

This year, our annual auction and gala returned to Boulder. This in-person event boasted over 180 guests and showed the strength of our community. Thanks to the amazing leadership of our small but mighty Gala Committee of Hillary Cardinal, Julie Collins, Suzanne Levy, Jessie Nagel, Jen Opie, Anne Marie Pewterbaugh, Sonya Sankpal, and Heather Zapletal, who orchestrated a seaworthy evening of fantastic food, fun, and dancing!

In addition to being a fun night out with friends, this signature event generated vital revenue for the school. We raised $49,156 for Dawson’s general operating budget and a record-breaking paddle raiser total of $159,600 for the Tomorrow Starts Today capital campaign. Combined with generous matches from the Alexander Dawson Foundation and an anonymous Dawson family, the paddle raiser brought in $519,200!

This community-wide effort directly supported our Dining Commons, Learning Commons, and Innovation Center, in addition to related campus improvements such as the lower school playground. Our community helped us to finish the capital campaign on a strong note; we are very grateful to all who contributed. Thank you to all of our amazing supporters for such a wonderful evening!

Building Dawson’s Future Together

The Tomorrow Starts Today capital campaign has transformed the Dawson campus. By utilizing current best practices for the design and construction of the Dining Commons, Learning Commons, and Innovation Center, we have created lasting, flexible learning spaces that enhance the work of the entire Dawson community. Your support during the entirety of the campaign has allowed Dawson to remain on the leading edge of educational excellence.

The launch of the community phase of the Tomorrow Starts Today capital campaign in January 2023 was an exciting time for all of us. This community-wide effort invited participation from all Dawson constituencies and directly supported our campus growth plan that has ensured the academic excellence that exemplifies the Dawson difference.

Our partnership with families, alumni, and other friends of the school has been vital to our success. Thanks to early support from our Board of Trustees, the Alexander Dawson Foundation, and major donors, we were able to complete construction of each of these projects on time and on budget.

When the community phase launched, the Alexander Dawson Foundation generously offered a one-to-one match for all campaign donations. Then, we received an additional match opportunity for the annual paddle raiser at the April gala. This $100,000 match, combined with the Foundation match inspired those in attendance that evening to raise an additional $519,200 toward the campaign.

We are deeply grateful to the 192 donors who contributed to the Tomorrow Starts Today capital campaign and helped to raise a total of $8,742,551. And, to the Alexander Dawson Foundation, which matched early contributions of $25,000 and more, and since January 1, 2023, matched every gift, dollar for dollar. This additional $8,374,670 brings our total funds raised to $17,117,221.

A Message from the Development Director

I am delighted to introduce myself as the Director of Development at Dawson School. Last year, when I first joined this amazing community, I did not realize the opportunities that would lie ahead for me at Dawson, so it is with great enthusiasm that I embrace this moment to lead Dawson’s development initiatives. My primary focus is building strong relationships with families, alumni, grandparents, and friends to ensure we have the resources and support necessary to enhance the educational experience for our students. Having spent most of my career in school philanthropy, I have a deep commitment to fostering a vibrant, meaningful, and sustainable community. Over the years, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative power of education and the positive impact it can have on the lives of young people. I firmly believe that education is a collaborative effort, and the active involvement of the entire community is crucial to creating an enriching and nurturing environment for our students. Together, we can inspire a love of learning, foster personal growth, and empower our students to become creative, resilient problem-solvers who bring their best to the world.

MEET THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM

The Development team will prioritize fundraising, donor relations, and community engagement by harnessing the collective strengths of the entire Dawson community to maximize our fundraising efforts. I am eager to work with you to explore new avenues of support, to continue developing relationships, and to create opportunities for impactful philanthropy for Dawson. Your passion and generosity are vital in shaping Dawson’s future, and I look forward to working closely with you!

Together, let’s embark on this exciting journey, fueled by our shared commitment to Dawson, and the growth and development of its students. I am honored to be a part of this exceptional community and I look forward to creating a legacy that will positively impact generations to come.

Warm regards,

ALUMNI RECEPTION A HUGE SUCCESS!

On Friday, May 26, more than 100 Dawson alumni, faculty, staff, and friends gathered in the Makerspace of the Innovation Center for the annual Alumni Reception. This event is an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with one another, as well as with faculty and staff. This year we were pleased to welcome alumni ranging from the class of 1993 to the class of 2022.

May’s event also included the honoring of two long-time faculty members, Craig Angus and Kieffer Denning, who retired at the end of the school year after 37 and 22 years, respectively, at Dawson. The night featured a slideshow of photos and two alumni speakers: Alex Gury ‘97 spoke about Craig Angus, and Nick Knobel ‘22 spoke about Kieffer Denning.

It was a lovely evening with the Denver Tap Truck (owned and operated by current Dawson parents, Scott and Jennifer Eisenstein) providing drinks and SAGE Dining providing food. Thank you to all who attended. We look forward to seeing you at events this year.

2022–2023 Financial Summary*

THE DAWSON ENDOWMENT

Dawson’s Endowment is a collection of permanently invested funds that provides consistent stream of income and allows the school to sustain excellence and adapt to the ever-changing needs of our community. Each year, the Board of Trustees authorizes the distribution of up to 4% of our endowment to support Dawson’s general operating budget. As of June 30, 2023, the endowment balance was $3,683,146. These funds provided more than $136,300 in the 2022-23 school year, supporting tuition assistance, faculty salaries, and professional development opportunities. We are grateful to all of the generous donors who have invested in our school’s future by contributing to the endowment.

“I support Dawson so my students have access to professional-grade tools that allow them to explore creative problem solving at a high level. If students want to pursue a career or field of study in something that I teach, I want them to have a strong foundation with tools and skills that they will need in their future.”
SARENA (BECKER) HEBEBRAND ‘05, ARTS DEPARTMENT CHAIR

2022-2023 Wolf Scholarship Recipients

For the last 15 years, the Wolf family has challenged Dawson students to make the world a better place through domestic and international projects. The Wolf Scholarship is designed to inspire our students to pursue their intellectual passions, to engender an eagerness to seek out learning opportunities beyond campus, and to prepare them for the future. Wolf Scholarship awards have been supported by the Wolf Family Foundation since 2008, and the program is overseen by alumni parents Tim and Mary Wolf, along with their sons DC ’06 and Stevie ’09. Dawson is enormously proud of the efforts of our Wolf Scholars, and grateful to the Wolf family for continuing to make these opportunities possible.

Malaika Burkholder ‘24 ran summer programs for children and teens at the Loveland Public Library. Malaika’s programs included nature walks and lessons about the environment. She also designed global immersion days in which children learned about different cultures. She designed craft projects that stimulated critical thinking skills and creativity. Malaika worked closely with the Loveland librarian as well as the Teen Activity Review Board to make sure her program met the needs of her community. This program grew out of her deep passion for public libraries, where she spent much time as a child immersing herself in the activities and community resources offered there.

Declan Noonan ‘25 created a podcast that will celebrate the lives of our local veterans. Declan believes that, “We sometimes have stereotypes in our heads about who veterans are, and this project will help people understand that all veterans have their own story.” Declan worked with the CU Dialogues program and learned how to initiate conversations with veterans in order to draw out anecdotes and advice. He then created a podcast of the top six teachable stories. For Declan, his work is not about one specific ending point, it’s about learning from these veterans’ lives and being able to grow from hearing their stories. It is Declan’s hope that the veterans will recognize that their service and sacrifices are valued and needed.

Sabina Pirin ‘25 identified a community of Ukrainian refugees in Denver in need of support. The plan for her program is to meet monthly over the course of a year with 15 Ukrainian refugee children and teach them English. During the time she will be working with the children, adults are mentored in another room. Sabina wants to be there for these students who are going through an incredibly difficult time in their lives. She wrote in her essay, “Education is a powerful tool that can be used to change the world.”

ELEANOR AYER SPEAKER SERIES

This speaker series was created by a generous donation to Dawson in memory of Eleanor Ayer, Dawson alumni parent, writer, social activist, and publisher. The Dawson Social Studies Department hosts an annual speaker to present pressing issues to the student body and actively involve them in the study of current affairs, critical thinking, and solving world problems. The 2022 Eleanor Ayer Speaker was Carl Wilkins, founder of World Outside My Shoes, a non-profit organization whose mission is to “inspire and equip people to stand up against genocide, racism, and intolerance.” He and his family began doing humanitarian work in Rwanda in 1990, and in April 1994 when the three-month genocide broke out, Carl was one of only two Americans who remained in the country. For the past 18 years, he has shared his story with students at schools throughout the world.

Carl came to Dawson in December to talk with students, faculty, and staff. He spoke to sixth and seventh graders about the Rwandan Genocide and how empathy and healing has allowed the people of Rwanda to flourish. He spoke to upper school students in the African History class and to the entire upper school student body during their weekly meeting. Carl discussed restorative practices implemented in Rwanda and how those may be replicated in other parts of the world and in our students’ lives. His talk with the Upper School was rooted in storytelling and empowering students to see their potential as active participants in envisioning the kinds of communities they hope to build.
