Strength in Community

ANNUAL REPORT 2021– 2022

Letter from Head of School George P. Moore

Last year, Dawson focused on maintaining our mission of academic excellence and providing students with challenging and relevant educational experiences every day, no matter the circumstances. In the fall, students began learning while wearing masks and at a distance from classmates, yet were able to celebrate the end of the school year with hugs and high-fives. Through the exceptional leadership and creativity of our faculty and staff, we were able to welcome back many of the opportunities that make the Dawson experience unique, including class trips, competitive athletics, Winterim, and our beloved student performances.

Dawson is a place of belonging, and this was a year of reengagement for our community. We welcomed families back to campus through lunches in the Dining Commons, parent happy hours, DPA socials, and end-of-year celebrations. It was wonderful to witness families and students alike embrace the opportunities to reconnect and to build relationships.

It is with sincere gratitude that I share our 2021-2022 Annual Report, which includes highlights from the year, donors, volunteers, financial data, and much more. In these pages, you will see the power of participation and the strength of our community. I would like to personally thank everyone who contributed to the success of our school last year. It is through the great generosity of our families that Dawson continues to thrive.

I would also like to express my appreciation for the Alexander Dawson Foundation. Through its support and stewardship, the Foundation helps to make so much of what we love about Dawson possible. As we look ahead to the coming school year, I will work to ensure that our students continue to be inspired to reach their potential, explore their curiosities, and develop the skills to meet the challenges of a dynamic and complex world.

In gratitude, George P. Moore

Eachyear, our entire community comes together in support of the Dawson Fund. This important campaign fills the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Dawson education, and allows us to provide extraordinary educational experiences for all students. The Dawson Fund has a direct impact on the excellent work of our faculty and the exceptional quality of our programs. Our parents, guardians, grandparents, faculty, staff, trustees, and alumni made Dawson a priority by contributing $513,582 this year. These funds supported our over 45 sports teams, new class offerings such as Soundscape America and the middle school’s climbing co-curricular, and additional staff. The Dawson Fund allows the school the flexibility to respond to our community’s ever-changing needs. Thank you for your generous support!

Dawson Rocks the Red Carpet

For the first time in three years, our entire community came together to celebrate our students at the Dawson Gala and Auction. This in-person event boasted over 180 guests and showed the power and strength of our community. Thanks to the amazing leadership of our Gala Co-Chairs, Betina Brumm, Jennifer Budacz, Shannon Knobel, and Heather Schaknowski, the Gala Committee orchestrated an evening of glamour, fun, and live music.

In addition to being a great night out with friends, this signature event generated record-breaking funds for our school! We raised $122,416 for Dawson’s general operating budget and an additional $145,650 for our Mega and Mini Grant Program. Coordinated by the Dawson Parent Association, this program allows faculty and staff to apply for funds for classroom enhancements or innovations for which they may not have budgeted. This amazing program, which is unique to Dawson, allows teachers to be creative and to stay on the leading edge of education, all while directly benefiting our students. Thank you to all of our amazing supporters for a wonderful evening!

Congratulations to Dawson’s Newest Alumni!

Dawson celebrated our 52nd graduating class in May. The Class of 2022 truly embodies the Dawson virtues of respect, compassion, courage, and integrity. They navigated classes and the college admissions process through a pandemic, and still graduated with Dawson’s sense of community and belonging. This fall, as these students enroll in 34 colleges in 19 states, they take with them the skills to meet the challenges of a dynamic and complex world. These graduates are creative critical-thinkers, who will thrive in college and beyond. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for these Mustangs and encourage them to know they always have a home at Dawson.

Dawson’s Vision Becomes a Reality

Dawsonstudents have embraced our Dining Commons, Learning Commons, and best-in-class Dawson Center for Innovation.

These signature spaces on campus have created an inspiring, 21st century environment for study and collaboration that has enhanced the student experience, inspired teachers, improved the educational program, and welcomed the community.

Dawson’s vision is that every graduate will achieve his/her full potential, savor life, and meet the challenges of the world. The Tomorrow Starts Today Campaign, which supports the construction of all three new spaces, has helped us make that vision a reality. We are deeply grateful to the 118 visionary donors who have stepped forward with early commitments totaling $8,324,060, and to the Alexander Dawson Foundation, which has matched every donation of $25,000 and above, for an additional $7,966,930. These contributions bring our total funds raised to $16,290,990 – less than $4 million away from our $20 million goal.

During the 2022-23 school year, we will invite all Dawson families to join us in the conclusion of this ambitious effort that has transformed our learning spaces and directly benefits the relevant and challenging educational experiences for which Dawson is known.

A Message from the Engagement & Events Coordinator

I joined the Development Office in May, and I am thrilled to work with Dawson’s network of over 2,000 alumni. I am happy to announce that we are rebuilding the alumni program and wanted to share with you more about the opportunities available to Dawson alumni. The Alumni Association exists to maintain alumni interest in, and support of, Dawson, as well as to enhance alumni engagement, and to set alumni up with a path for success.

There are several ways for you to get involved, and alumni are welcome to volunteer both locally and abroad!

Alumni Speaker: Do you have an interesting job, hobby, or expertise in a particular field? Do you love speaking to students? Come back to campus, and be a guest speaker in a class.

Alumni Council: Our new Alumni Council will work to connect alumni with one another and the school. This group will include alumni volunteers from different classes and geographical areas. Details on how to join the Alumni Council will be available later this fall.

Class Representative: Keep class spirit alive through calls, emails, social networking, and thank-you notes; help collect class notes; actively seek to find lost alumni/ae and capture email addresses for all classmates; coordinate/encourage class involvement with alumni events.

I encourage you to explore all that we have to offer, to stay connected, and to make yourself and Dawson stronger. I welcome your emails and/or calls. I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have and to fill you in on what is happening around the campus! If you should find yourself in the area, please stop by and visit.

With warmest regards,

cslagel@dawsonschool.org

ALUMNI RECEPTION A SUCCESS!

Each year, the Alumni Reception provides an opportunity for alumni of all ages to reconnect and to catch up at the start of summer. This year’s signature event at Oskar Blues in Longmont boasted more than 60 guests, with alumni ranging from the Class of 1984 to the Class of 2021.

After such a successful and fun event, the Devel opment Office is eager to host more opportunities for alumni to gather together as well as to return to campus for a tour, to speak to students, and to get involved in the Alumni Association. Thank you to all who attended, and we look forward to seeing even more alumni next year!

THE DAWSON ENDOWMENT

Dawson’s Endowment is a collection of permanently invested funds that provide a consistent stream of income. Each year, the Board of Trustees authorizes the distribution of up to 4% of the average market value of the endowment investment funds to support Dawson’s general operating budget. As of June 30, 2022, the endowment investment fund balance was $3,397,353. In the 2021-2022 school year, $147,300 was distributed, which supported tuition assistance, faculty salaries, and professional development. We are so grateful to all of our generous donors who have invested in Dawson’s future by contributing to the endowment.

“We support the Dawson Fund to ensure a culture of community where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.”

Wolf Scholarship Recipients

The Wolf Scholarship is designed to inspire Dawson students to pursue their intellectual passions, to engender an eagerness to seek out learning oppor tunities beyond campus, and to prepare them for the future. Wolf Scholarship awards have been supported by the Wolf Family Foundation since 2008, and the program is overseen by alumni parents Tim and Mary Wolf, along with their sons DC ’06 and Stevie ’09. Dawson is enormously proud of these students’ efforts and grateful to the Wolf family for continuing to make these opportunities possible.

Shanti Harrison ’24 wants to help the people of Boulder County and beyond through ser vice learning projects. To that end, she will be starting a local chapter of the award-winning program, PeaceJam, at Dawson.

PeaceJam was founded in Denver in 1994 and has now grown to have offices in 39 countries across five continents. Its focus is on service, not politics, and the organization has a non partisan stance.

Shanti will use the Wolf Scholarship to purchase three relevant modules of the PeaceJam curriculum for Dawson. The PeaceJam club will select three service-learning projects relating to the 10 focus areas of PeaceJam

Chloe Sebek ’25 has developed her own program called, “Keep an Ion Science.” She brought it to life at the Longmont Public Library over the summer of 2022. Chloe has a deep passion for science, a desire to engage young elementary students in the enjoyment of science, and an excitement to give back to her community.

Chloe’s hope is for young elementary students to feel her enthusiasm for science and to share the same passion. The “Keep an Ion Science” program is accessible to local community members at no cost. It allows students to explore a diverse range of scientific topics by watching demonstrations, completing hands-on activities/experiments, and receiving take-home souvenirs to remember what they learned.

ELEANOR AYER SPEAKER SERIES

This speaker series was created by a generous donation to Dawson in memory of Eleanor Ayer, former Dawson parent, writer, social activist, and publisher. The Dawson Social Studies Department hosts an annual speaker with the objective of presenting pressing issues to the student body and actively involving students in the study of current affairs, critical thinking, and solving world problems.

When Trent Knoss visited Dawson School as the 2021 Eleanor Ayer speaker, he was the Managing Editor at the Institute for Science and Policy through the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Recently, he has taken a role as the Director of Communications & Marketing at the Nature Conservancy in Pennsylvania & Delaware. He specializes in strategic communications, media relations, editorial project management, and content creation with a focus on scientific research.

“Dawson is a truly exceptional community— from students to families, from faculty to staff. The Dawson Fund allows faculty to take the Dawson classroom and extra/ co-curricular experiences to the next level.”
