Hundreds of stalls offer special gifts at fayre

HUNDREDS of stalls will be attending this year’s Christmas Fayre at the Westpoint Arena in Exeter. For three festive days the Devon County Showground will transform into a hub of all things Christmas. A range of retailers, craftspeople, wholesalers, manufacturers and importers will come from far and wide to celebrate the festive season with wonderful gift ideas and essential Christmas items. The Barnstaple-based organisers, Grandstand Events, spend most of the year putting together a diverse mix of traders for this spectacular three-day event. This will be their 19th year of staging the Christmas Shopping Fayre at

Westpoint. Grandstand Events said: “Many of the exhibitors have been attending since the start but to keep it fresh, we seek out a wide cross-section of new companies with products yet to reach the high street.” From beautiful wooden carvings from Bali to alpaca knitwear from Peru, if you’re seeking a truly unique Christmas gift, this fayre is the ideal place. If you’re keen to tuck into the festive food - I’m sure we all have a hankering for a mince pie and a cheeky tipple - the speciality food and drink area is always busy. You can meet top producers offering free tastings of their scrummy puddings and pies to delectable

wines and liqueurs. Talented street-style entertainers will be present to bask in the festive cheer. Also Wildlife On Exmoor star Johnny Kingdom will be attending as well as Santa in the grotto at Westpoint. In the main hall, award-winning magician Ben Woodward will show you how to perform his amazing tricks in his Magic Masterclass. Tempted by all these Christmas goodies? Pop down to the Christmas Shopping Fayre on Friday, November 28 to Sunday, November 30. There is plenty of free parking on-site and a restaurant and café. General admission is £3.50, seniors £2.50 and kids of 16 and under go free.

‘Chase the elf’ charity event THIS year, North Devon Hospice has launched a festive fun-run with a twist. Runners taking part in the 10mile event will be chasing an elf along the route, with a prize available for each person who finishes ahead of the playful character. Chase The Elf takes place on Sunday, December 14 and will see runners run, walk, skip or hop along the course through the Tarka Trail from Bideford to Barnstaple Football Club. Emma Lowe from North Devon Hospice’s fundraising team said: “We think this is a great seasonal twist on a classic 10-mile event because it’s always more fun to have a target in front of you. “Our anonymous elf is a bit like The Stig of the running world. He’s very competitive and won’t like getting beaten, so it will be even more satisfying for runners when they catch him and claim their prize at the end. “With lots of long straights on the route, runners will often catch a glimpse of our elf’s bright red hat and stripy leggings, but whether they’ll be able to catch him or not is another matter!” Simon Haywood from North Devon Road Runners, who are helping to organise the event, said: “We love this idea because it is a lot more fun than a standard race. “We’re really happy to be helping out with this event, not only because it’s a great laugh but also because all the money raised goes to North Devon Hospice. The care they provide to local people is amazing and we’ll do all we can to make this a success for them.” The main Chase The Elf event is for those aged 18 and over, but

there will be a shorter Tinsel Run for youngsters involving a 3km route around Barnstaple, starting and finishing at the football club. Emma added: “It’ll be a great way to get into the Christmas spirit so we hope to see lots of people there.

“This year is the hospice’s 30th anniversary and it would be amazing if the runners taking part could raise £30 sponsorship to help us celebrate.” To enter Chase The Elf visit www.northdevonhospice.org.uk or call Emma on 01271 347213.

Fun-run for a good claus

THIS year’s Santas On The Run event will be coming to Bideford on Sunday, November 30. Coinciding with the town’s Christmas Lights Switch On event, this year the Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is hoping more Santas than ever will join them for this jolly jaunt around Victoria Park. The run is open to everyone; grandparents, parents, carers, children, prams and even pets! Feel free to run it, walk it, skip it or chomp on a mince pie all the way

around the 2km course. CHSW said: “It’s simply a wonderful way to help raise money for Children’s Hospice South West. “As it forms part of the Bideford Christmas Lights Switch On, why not make a day of it and enjoy meeting the reindeer, characters from Frozen and the spectacular fireworks display?” Marina Leadbetter, events fundraiser for CHSW said: “Santas On The Run is a great way

to kick-start the festive season! Everyone form our corporate supporters to the families who use CHSW like to take part as it embraces all generations. “Hundreds of running Santas is a spectacle not to be missed!” The run will take place at Victoria Park in Bideford at 3pm. The event is supported by The Voice FM and entry is £10 (adult), £5 (under 16’s) and under threes and pets go free or £25 for a family ticket. Entry includes your Santa suit, medal and festive goodies.

Father Christmas, winter gardens and a knitted tree at Arlington Court FROM wreath making to carol singing, Arlington Court has some seasonal delights planned this Christmas. A beautiful knitted Christmas tree will be on display at Arlington Court this year, with each section knitted by numerous volunteers of the All2Knit group. The tree was created in 2005 and took nine months; this will be the highlight of the decorations in the staircase hall. Visitors can listen to and join in with festive Christmas carols at Arlington on three dates this winter, on Friday, November 29 with the Northam Chorale Society from 12pm to 1.40pm, Sunday, December 7 with the South Molton Town Band from 3.15pm to 4.30pm and Saturday, December 13 with the Victorian Arlington servants at 12pm and 2pm. Ana Chylak, general manager at Arlington Court, said: “The Chorale Society gave a concert at our Christmas fair last year, which sounded fantastic. “This year they’ll be returning to the house and will give the concert from the gallery. “The knitted tree will reduce the amount of space available in the staircase hall so there will be no seating available. Instead, listeners will be able to walk around the house in the festive ambiance which should lead to more people being able to hear the singers. Staff and volunteers at Arlington Court are busy decking the halls this winter for a memorable Christmas. Every weekend from Saturday, November 29 to Sunday, December 21 the house, carriage museum and grounds will be open for visitors to enjoy the festive decorations. Spectacular decorations include blue, silver and white themes in the grand long room and crafts in the explorer room,

which families can do together and take home. The sculptures in the grounds will be dressed for the season, too! In the tea room the cosy log burner will be lit to warm chilled fingers and toes, together with festive treats including mulled wine and homemade mince pies. Arlington Court will also be welcoming a very special guest this year, as Father Christmas will pop by to meet the children. On December 13, 14, 20 and 21, Father Christmas will be visiting from 12pm to 3pm. All children will receive a gift. The cost is ÂŁ4 per child and normal admission

charges apply for adults. The magical grounds will be transformed for a Victorian Christmas on Saturday, December 13. Meet the Victorian servants in the house and be greeted by the butler before seeing the cook sorting menus for the festive season. Discover the gifts servants would have given to each other and even make something to take home. In the beautiful gardens there will be information on which plants are used to decorate the house, including a demonstration by a gardener. This is a unique event not to be missed.

Woolly’s Winter Wonderland and farmers’ markets at The Big Sheep

TOBOGANNING, ice skating, reindeer and Santa will be coming to The Big Sheep this Christmas for Woolly’s Winter Wonderland. Experience the magic of Christmas at The Big Sheep and even meet Santa himself on weekends and daily from December 20 to 24. Children and adults can enjoy festive ice skating, toboganning and a ride-on snowball simulator. There will also be a chance for children to collect their magic reindeer food to put out for Santa’s helpers on Christmas eve, so they don’t miss out on their presents on Christmas morning. Visit the magical light show with lights dancing in tandem to some much-loved Christmas tunes. Rick Turner, director at The Big Sheep said: “We cannot wait to open our magical doors and invite the children into our Christmas home. “We expect their tip-toes to be bouncing and eyes gleaming as they excitedly arrive at Woolly’s Wonderland and watch the magic unfold. There will be a chance to have breakfast with Santa on Monday, December 22 with a special guest appearance. Rick added: “Speaking to Santa from his home in Lapland, his one condition on visiting the North Devon children was that he must bring along a special

secret guest with him. For fear of being added to the naughty list and not wishing to deprive the North Devon children of such festive fun, we couldn’t refuse this request from Santa. For clues on who the magical guest might be, visit The Big Sheep’s Facebook page

www.facebook.com/thebigsheep during November. On Saturday, December 13 children can help Mother Christmas to create a family gingerbread cottage. Lori Reich (Mother Christmas) from Shute Farm said: “The gingerbread will last until after Christmas so you may choose to

give the cottage as a gift to a loved one, use it as a centrepiece on your Christmas table or simply demolish and chomp on the cottage during the days leading up to Christmas. Don’t forget to book your space to make your gingerbread cottage. Throughout December, each

Saturday The Big Sheep will host its annual Christmas Farmers Markets. Sponsored by the North Devon Journal, the markets are free to visit and will take place on December 6, 13 and 20 from 9am to 1pm. Delicious goodies include free range turkeys, organic meats, sprouts on stalks, cheeses,

Father Christmas will be visiting and a craft workshop will be open with Learn Devon, to create a felt Christmas bauble for free. Tea, coffee and mince pies will be available. The fete will take place on Saturday, December 13 from 12pm to 4pm.

Huge party on the square Barnstaple as part of their UK tour. The band signed to Warner in 2010 when they released their debut album. Band members Timmy Matley, Mark Franks, Lachie Chapman, Mike Crawshaw and Darren Everest all share an interest in the doo-wop genre of music of the Fifties,

mixed with R&B and pop music. “We couldn’t be more excited about The Overtones switching on the lights this year,” said Sue Rawle of the Business Improvement District (BID) Barnstaple. “They’re stopping over as part of their tour, so it’s a great opportunity to see the band live and for free, too.”

Annual Christmas Tree Festival to start celebrations

MAGNIFICENT decorated trees will adorn St Mary Magdalene’s parish church this Christmas. Whether it’s shuttlecocks for the badminton club or sweets for the local sweet shop, each tree

will represent the various groups in South Molton. The South Molton Business Association (SMBA) said: “Each tree is a work of art in itself, but when they come together in the

church they create a magical Christmas experience. The exhibition will be open each day from Thursday, December 4 to Monday, December 8 from 10 am to 4pm. On Friday this will be

until 5pm. Last year 65 trees exhibited representing groups including schools, businesses and activities organisations. More than 2,000 visitors flocked to the event which grows each year.

Margaret White, a volunteer for the Christmas Tree Festival, said: “This will be our fourth year of running the Christmas Tree Festival and it’s always a delight to see so many beautiful

and originally decorated trees displayed throughout the church. It is also a lovely way of uniting the South Molton community at this very special time of year.

Late night shopping and festive fayre SOUTH Molton will be starting its festive celebrations with late night shopping on Friday, December 5. With a packed pannier market overflowing to The Assembly Rooms, retailers, cafes and pubs will be welcoming visitors to get in the Christmas spirit. Gather inspiration for Christmas gifts and decorations and don’t forget to indulge in a few winter treats! Look out for the hog roasts and crepes in the square, the coffee stall and plenty of other goodies in the pannier market. This year, the late night shopping has been organised by a group of market traders and retailers. As well as the shopping, the school’s Lantern Parade will take place, entering the square at 6.30pm with the town band and choir.

Choir to hold ‘Welcome to Christmas’ concert

Fatstock Show promises delicious food, carols and demonstrations

SOUTH Molton’s annual Fatstock Show will be celebrating its sixth year this Christmas with a wool theme and a performance from The Military Wives Choir. On Sunday, December 7 between 10am and 4pm, the Fatstock Show will demonstrate how wool is produced, starting the journey with sheep shearing demonstrations, hand clipping, hand powered and the modern day electric systems. The organisers of the show said: “Sheep and the wool trade first brought wealth into the South Molton district during the 17th century and indeed the town’s emblem still incorporates a ram at its heart. “Even today there are more sheep per acre in this area than anywhere else in the world. So what could be more appropriate than having wool as the theme of this year’s Christmas Fatstock Show. Devon and Cornwall Wool will also be present, explaining the Wool Board’s role in both production and marketing. As always, the event is firmly rooted in traditional agriculture. As such, the day includes illus-

trations of the production of meat, from judging the live pens of sheep and bullocks to an auction later in the day. There will also be rare poultry breeds, a cart horse and Exmoor ponies, pigs and alpacas to meet at the show. From 10.30am to 3pm, the stage will be filled with demonstrations and entertainment, including South Molton Choral Society and children from Brayford School singing seasonal carols. Food plays a huge role in the event, whether you’d like to sample or buy produce. There will also be hot drinks and snacks available from the South Molton Market Canteen girls. For those seeking a delicious Christmas meal, a full carvery will be served in The Assembly Rooms by local farming sisters Garfield’s Girls. A mouth-watering range of meats will be supplied by local butcher John May, including beef, lamb, venison and pork rolls. Of course there will be plenty of stalls offering Christmas-themed goods throughout the day. For those who want to be cre-

ative or competitive, there is a scarecrow competition. Chivenor’s Miltary Wives will be performing at the show and a bar will be open courtesy of The Bell Inn, Chittlehampton and refreshments provided by the event’s chosen charity, North Devon Hospice. Tickets for the event will be ÂŁ10 (adults), ÂŁ3 (children) or ÂŁ20 (family tickets with two adults and two children) available from Printworkx, Stags Auctioneers, John Walker Insurance and John May Family Butchers. Local farmer Morley Heal, an organiser of the show, said: “We are particularly pleased with the way the Fatstock Show is supported by so many people, both visitors who now come from all over the South West and exhibitors. “It is wonderful to welcome The Military Wives Choir this year and we hope that this will be a great success. “Last year we raised more than ÂŁ3,300 for charity through the raffle and auction. “This year we hope to exceed this with all proceeds going to North Devon Hospice.â€?

FESTIVE music will ring through the elegant Assembly Rooms this year, when the South Molton Circuit Choir hosts their Welcome To Christmas concert. For a night of carols and songs including South Molton Junior School’s Choir, this concert will be a heart-warming way to start the winter season. Mike Courtney, a founding member of South Molton Circuit

Choir, said: “This will be the first year that we have joined South Molton’s Big Christmas Festival event. “We are greatly looking forward to being part of this successful weekend which brings thousands of folk to town to celebrate this important time of year. “All proceeds from the concert will be going towards South Molton Community Hospital’s

Bideford’s Christmas Tidings is sponsored by DS Electrical. The Business of Bideford (BOB) will be producing a delightful window display throughout the town on the theme Every Window Tells A Story.
