Gosset

Pierre Gosset was Mayor of Aÿ when, in 1584, he founded his boutique Champagne House. Gosset still has a site in Aÿ although they have now a grander establishment in Épernay as well. They attach great importance to the specific character of each individual terroir and, using their long standing relationships, they blend together the best Crus from 45 Grand and Premier Cru villages to great effect. They believe in the old ways, not only is the fruit all harvested by hand, but the ‘remuage’ (turning of the bottles) is all done by hand as well. The results speak for themselves.

George 7 is a brand-new boutique Château in Fronsac, the lesser-known right bank appellation neighbouring Pomerol and St. Emilion. Merlot flourishes here on clay over limestone plateau, and wines of Fronsac share similar characteristics with their illustrious neighbours. Owner, Sally Evans has lived and worked in France for the last 25 years, and in 2015 she purchased a dilapidated property with three hectares of 35-year-old Merlot vines, building a new winery and tasting facility. The experts guiding the estate are Anthony Appollot and Bruno Lacoste (who started his career with Michel Rolland), who also consult for several very well-known left and right bank Châteaux. Committed to sustainability, Château George 7 has shifted from traditional farming to a holistic approach and has the highest level of High Environmental Value certification. Changes include mechanical rather than chemical weeding, planting a hedgerow for biodiversity to retain balance in the vineyard along with a review od all packaging to ensure sustainability is considered at every stage from the plants to the final product.

Château Daugay

SAINT-ÉMILION

Château Daugay is located at the foot of the southern and southwestern part of the Saint-Emilion. The estate takes its name from geai, meaning “jay” that congregated on the hills and slopes that now bear this name. The inimitable strident cry of these birds with multicoloured plumage warns their family that intruders have come into the forest. The domaine was acquired by Christian de Brouard after the second world war when it became part of Angelus. However in 1985, with the new Saint-Emilion classification, Daugay separated from Angélus and in 2006 passed into the hands of Christian’s daughter, Hélène who now manages the estate. Their heirs owned the estate for over 150 years, entering the 1855 Médoc classification as a 4th Growth. New owners took over the Château in the early 20th century, with the current owners, the Tesseron family, taking over the estate in 1960 and starting the Château’s rebirth. The family also manages Château Pontet-Canet.

Sauternes

Bordeaux’s most famous region for producing sweet wine is situated 20 miles south of the city, spanning both banks of the Garonne and Ciron Rivers. These waterways provide the perfect misty morning microclimate to encourage the growth of Botrytis Cinerea (also known as Noble Rot). The rot attacks the grape evaporating the water, concentrating the sugar levels. Sauternes are some of the longest lived wines with premium examples from exceptional vintages having the potential to last 100 years or more. They are characterised by their balance of sweetness and zest of acidity with typical notes of apricots, honey, peaches with a nutty edge.

Régis Bouvier CÔTE DE NUITS

Bernard Bouvier took over the vines of his brother Régis in 2019 and now produces these wines along with those of Domaine René Bouvier (30 hectares), where he has been winemaker since 1992. Although Bernard produces a range of excellent wines across the various villages of Morey, Gevrey and Chambolle, to name just a few, his main focus is on Marsannay, an underrated appellation in the most northern part of the Côtes de Nuits. Bernard follows organic principles and gives a great attention to details. Grapes are tasted on the vine to obtain perfect ripeness, handpicked and sorted on receipt at the winery. Very little extraction is done during the maceration so that balance and vibrancy are gently encouraged. As a results, his reds have silky and delicate tannins and the whites are full of verve and retain the freshness of the fruit.

Domaine Tollot-Beaut were among the group of pioneering Burgundians who started producing and bottling their own wines in the early part of the 20th Century. As rich in tradition as this Domaine is, under Nathalie Tollot, no-one rests on their laurels and a premium is placed on quality. Money is spent on new oak every year to ensure a good stock of healthy barrels which provide the perfect resting place for their magnificent wines. However, it is the vineyard where most of the investment goes on. They employ twice as many people per hectare than any of their neighbours to restrict the vigour of the vines and therefore increase the chances of ripe concentrated grapes being produced every year. The wines remain respectful to their origins while sharing characteristic spicy, toasty and cherry fruit flavours.

Dorées BEAUJOLAIS

Terres Dorées is the Beaujolais domaine in the village of Charnay owned by Jean-Paul Brun. Instead of carbonic maceration, standard for the region’s wine production, Jean-Paul produces old-style Beaujolais by de-stemming his grapes, fermenting and ageing them in a mix of concrete vats and Burgundian barrels. He also abstains from chaptalization and cultured yeasts. His belief is that the Gamay grape expresses itself best at a lower degree of alcohol and by using grape's indigenous yeasts. As a result, his wines are complex, structured and full of character, reflective of the terroir.

The domaine has been within the Leperchois family for many generations with the current generation practicing organic viticulture since 1997. In 1920, the family developed the old stable walls into a cellar in which the horse emblem for the wines was founded. Their 40 hectares of vineyards can be found on the right bank of the Rhône river, taking advantage of the sun exposure and drainage from the sandy and stony soils. Biodynamic practices, strictly no oak, and a passion for winemaking allow Domaine des Carabiniers to produce some of the best wines of the region. Certified ‘Demeter’ biodynamic.

The Domaine was established in 1840 and has been run by five generations of the Faraud family ever since. Latterly, Michel Faraud handed over the Domaine to his three daughters, Delphine, Sandrine and Rosaline. They produce one of the benchmark wines of the appellation, rich and with a great lifespan. The estate has 17 hectares of land, with yields from the 40-year-old vines kept very low. The wines are unfined and unfiltered, simply resting for a year in large wooden casks.

Château des Roques

This estate lies on the rocky plateau of des Roques, a hamlet on the outskirts of Vacqueyras. Owned and run by the Seroul family, this is managed on traditional lines with the harvesting and sorting of all the fruit carried out by hand. The blend is classic Southern Rhône Valley (70% Grenache, 15% Mouvèdre, and 15% Syrah) with the vines being, on average, over 40 years old. Eclipsed in reputation to some extent by the wines from its more illustrious neighbours, Gigondas and Châteauneuf, Vacqueyras has plenty to offer and deserves to be much better known.

Domaine Pierre Amadieu was founded in 1929 with just seven hectares of vines. At the time, wines were matured in an old railway tunnel, which was an ideal temperature. In the 1950s, two properties, Romane and La Machotte, were added to the estate which is currently the largest in Gigondas, spreading over 137 hectares. Each parcel is carefully selected to express this exceptional terroir producing elegant wines with great length and freshness. Caves de Pouilly-sur-Loire

Pouilly-Fumé lies across the river Loire from Sancerre where it produces only half as much wine as its better known neighbour. The region has many small growers and some of the best of these have grouped together to form ‘Caves de Pouilly-sur-Loire’ reasoning that by pooling resources they are assured access to the best winemaking facilities available. This is of enormous help in making vibrant, aromatic Sauvignon in this relatively northern wine growing area. Well founded and well managed, wines made by this organisation are always excellent.

Chemin de la Serre

There are some unbeatable value wines coming from the Languedoc these days and the Chemin de la Serre range are amongst the best of them. The aromatic Marsanne-Viognier is a great example – Marsanne gives the blend its appealing softness with Viognier adding an exotic, spicy flavour. Carignan is a variety which springs to life in old age, only when the vine matures and the yields drop does the fruit offer up its gloriously dark, brambly, pungency.

The cooperative is well established using modern vinification techniques. The soils here are poor and stony so that the yields are quite low, but the climate helps. Croix d’Allons

Located in Bandol, the most prestigious appellation of Provence, this small family estate was founded in 1924 by Philippe Damiano’s grand parents, Pierre and Maria. Grown on very ancient geological formations of the Triassic, the vines are naturally sheltered from the cold north wind ‘Mistral’, so the grapes can achieve optimum ripeness. This is particularly important when growing Mourvèdre, the main variety planted on the estate. When Philippe took over, he converted his nine hectares of vineyards to organic culture. Helped by his wife Florence, he only makes one red and rosé from Mourvèdre, Grenache and Cinsault and one white from Clairette and Ugni Blanc. His wines are classic Bandols, full-bodied and rich with spicy and earthy character.

S A Prüm

The Prüm name has been synonymous with quality wine production in the Mosel for generations, where the family has been cultivating vineyards and producing wine in the region since 1156. In summary, S A Prüm was the original, dominant Prüm name until 1911 when branches of the family went their own ways (i.e. J J Prüm). The grandson of the vineyard’s namesake, Sebastian Alois Prüm (1794-1871), established the winery in 1911. His son and now grandson, the present day Raimund, who inherited the vineyards in 1971, continue the traditions with his daughter Saskia. Since 1971 the winery was modernised and the vineyards further developed, consistently producing wines with an international following. The 13 hectares of vineyards are exclusively planted with Riesling on the steep slopes of the middle Mosel.

Tenuta Agricola Montauto MAREMMA

The Maremma is often referred to as the ‘Wild West’, both in terms of its landscapes and its winemaking. While in Northern Tuscany, the Etruscans were making wine thousands of years before, the Maremma used to be a wild, swampy backwater and viticulture was only introduced to the region in the 19th century. Riccardo Lepri’s family has produced artisan wines for nearly sixty years at the Montauto estate, nestled 200 metres above sea level on a clay rich soil. The vineyards benefit from a cooling sea breeze and large diurnal temperature. This unique microclimate coupled with Riccardo’s practices of minimum intervention, hand harvesting and use of natural fertilizers help produce wines that are clean, fresh and mineral, showcasing his unique terroir with balance and elegance.

Located near Castellina, in the heart of Chianti, Nardi Viticoltori is family run and one of the youngest wineries in the region. After gaining experience in some of Chianti’s best estates, brothers Gicomo and Angelo Nardi decided to produce their own wines from the family vines, just for fun, in 2014. Their passion paid off and today they produce four wines from their own land. The vineyards benefit from a south east exposition and spread over 10 ha of clay soils. Yields are kept low to produce grapes with great concentration of fruit and the winery is in the middle of the vineyards, so the grapes are pressed with no delay retaining the freshness.

Puglia Paolo Leo

The story of this beautiful estate in Salento, Puglia, starts at the turn of the 19th century when Antonio Leo started to vinify grapes grown on his 20-hectare estate, Masseria Monticello. The estate than passed to Antonio’s grandson Paolo Leo, who inherited the land and built his own winery. In the 1950s the fourth generation of the Leo family replanted the vineyards with Negroamaro, Primitivo and Malvasia Nera, and in the 1980s the fifth generation of the family built the winery in San Donaci. Paolo Leo is now run by the sixth generation and specialises in the indigenous varietals of southern Italy and Puglia.

Quinta do Avelino

Named in honour of the oenologist’s grandfather, Avelino, Quinta do Avelino was created. The family’s history of wine making goes back more than a hundred years with the fourth generation now in charge. Their only wine is made from 100% Treixadura, a white grape variety found in the Ribeiro region, grown on nearly 3 hectares cultivated naturally and hand harvested. The grape must is drawn and fermented at very low temperatures to keep the aromatic concentration at its purest and is then aged on the lees.

This thoroughly up to date winery lies just to the south of Barcelona only 10 kilometres from the Mediterranean. Fully organic, this estate is blessed with many different types of soil so they can produce wines of diversity and complexity. The Cava they make is a fine example: Parellada from the hills gives floral freshness, Macabeu from the middle heights adds fruitiness, and Xarel-lo from the plains gives body and structure. The delicious Clasico Blanco is a blend of the same varieties but in different proportions – there are lovely fresh, tropical flavours in this.

Borja Bodegas Aragonesas

This innovative and ambitious organisation lies in the Campo de Borja region just to the South of Rioja and Navarra. The idea is that they select the best of the wines from the local Cooperatives and then ‘finish them off’ (blending, oak ageing, filtering and bottling) at Aragonesas before putting them onto the market for the benefit of us all. Garnacha (Grenache) is the predominant grape and the results being achieved by this imaginative process are truly impressive.

Higher altitude vineyard sites were chosen for their quality potential in preference to those on the lower ground, with this focus on quality in the vineyard resulting in Valduero consistently producing some of the region’s best wines.

Adegas Pombal a Lanzada is a small family owned and operated winery drawing from two hectares of vines from some of the finest terroirs of Rías Baixas. The name derives from a long stretch of beach, which the winery overlooks called ‘La Playa Lanzada’. The family has been growing grapes and producing wine from their vines for generations, they have only recently made the wine commercially available to the general public. All of the vines are cultivated organically and hand harvested before undertaking fermentation in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation is prevented from taking place in order to preserve the purity of fruit, with six months ageing on the lees to provide extra depth and complexity.

De Simon Family, Bodegas de la Marquesa

Rioja

Bodegas de la Marquesa

This long established family Bodega lies in the village of Villabuena, drawing from vineyard plantings on the limestone ridges of the Alavesa region. It is based on the same principal as a good French Château which is to use fruit only from their own vineyards, set rigorous standards in the cellars and, following fermentation in stainless steel, age the wine in oak part of which is renewed each year. The wines have elegance and pungency combined with the soft spicy allure that only well made Tempranillo can offer. They are very good indeed.

Alentejo Bojador Espaço Rural

Bojador is the personal project of Pedro Ribeiro. Both Pedro and his wife Catarine Vieira were winemakers in other Portuguese regions, but decided to come to Vidigueira, in Alentejo, to produce wines that are true to the historical traditions of this land. Selection of the grapes, low-yields, careful pruning, and early harvest are some of the procedures they follow but, the main innovation happens in the winery. As a tribute to the region they ferment some of their wines in impermeable pots called Talha, where both wine and skin must remain in contact until November 11th (St. Martin’s day). The resulted wines are mineral, fresh, elegant and above all, authentic.

Casa da Passarella is a 150 year old winery founded by Amand d’Oliveira who made his fortune in Brazil before coming to the Dão region. After building a beautiful villa in Lagarinhos, he decided to surround it by an impressive 200 hectares of vines. In 2007, Ricardo Cabral took over the estate and his first priority was to rebuild the winery as well as focusing on growing indigenous grape varieties. He hired consultant winemaker Paulo Nunes who produces wines that stand out for their freshness, mineral character and longevity. Paulo was one of the first to recognised the advantages of the higher altitude vineyards situated in the Serra d’Estrela (700-800m high compare to the other Passarella’s vineyards at 400-600m).

Argentina Mendoza Gouguenheim

Patricio’s love of wine started at an early age when his French parents gave him a little bit of wine mixed with sparkling water. Many years later his interest and passion for wine led him to purchase his own winery. Located 45 miles from the city of Mendoza in the foothills of the Andes we think it is one of the best kept secrets in the Uco Valley. Situated at an altitude of 3,600 feet (one of the highest estates in Mendoza) there is a vast temperature difference between day and night, these unique elements together with irrigation from the Andes snow melt allow optimum fruit ripening and concentration. With the expertise of Patricio and his wine-making team the results are for great wines and considerable value.

Waipara

Mount Brown

Lying in the foothills of Mount Brown in Waipara Valley this abandoned wine estate was only rediscovered 16 years ago and it is something of a success story. Waipara has a greater variation in temperature between night and day than more northerly Marlborough, yields are much lower, and this valley is fast establishing a reputation for quality. Aromatics such as Pinot Gris, and also Pinot Noir, are perfectly suited to Mount Brown’s small sheltered stony site and winemaking here is of a very high order.

Marlborough Little Beauty

This great little privately owned estate lies in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys where the wines differ slightly from the mainstream. This delectable property is spread over five plots, each with its own soil profile and micro climate, which allows wine maker Eveline Fraser (former head wine maker at Cloudy Bay) the chance to make unusually complex, multi dimensional wines. The winemaking is modern, but there is more than a nod towards tradition; in ‘Little Beauty’ the best of new and the best of the old unite together seamlessly.

Central Otago Te Kano

‘Te Kano’, the Maori word for seed, is owned by the Lloyd family who are committed to rejuvenating the land through sustainable practices. Acquired in 2015 and standing up to 320m above sea level, the estate has a variety of terrain and soils which produces their unique and expressive wines. Te Kano has three different vineyards of Northburn, Jerome and Eliza, the latter two named after beloved family members. Viticulturist Mike Winter and winemaker Dave Sutton help produce a range of vineyard and barrel selected wines which are currently exclusive to the UK market with Davy’s.

Roodekrantz

Roodekrantz Wines is a small boutique label who crafts fine artisanal wines from selected blocks of old dry land vines of exceptional terroir. South Africa’s ‘Old Vine Project’ – which aims to keep rare old-vine fruit away from large commercial blends – saw the Burger and Morkel families release the first Roodekrantz wines in 2015. Committed to preserving these ancient Certified Old Vine Heritage Vineyards, they work closely with their growers, encouraging respectful and sustainable vineyard practices. They source old parcels from Stellenbosch, Paarl and Swartland and primarily focus on producing Chenins. Their wines are made with minimal intervention in the cellar to allow expression of the character of the vineyards. No new oak ensures the quality of the fruit and terroir shine through in every bottle.

Elgin Valley

La Brune

La Brune (French for ‘Brunette’) was created when multi-award winning winemaker, Nico Grobler, responsible for Eikendal wines of Stellenbosch, visited Burgundy and fell in love with Burgundian winemaking and the expression of their wines. Bringing this back to South African soil, his wines focus on finesse, elegance and purity of fruit. Nico and his wife Christelle set up their vineyard in Elgin Valley with the focus to craft naturally fresh and lifted wines with a passion for Pinot Noir in particular.

California

Robert Sinskey Vineyards

A second generation, family-owned and operated estate. Their focus on ‘elegance over brawn’ is reflected in the finesse and elegance of their wines and the ability for them to age gracefully. The estate has had the same winemaker for over 25 years who produces the wines with cuisine pairing in mind, presenting his wines with appropriate foods from the kitchen where possible. Robert Sinskey himself is a native Californian who describes himself as an ‘atypical vintner’ with the philosophy that ‘wine is not an athletic event’ or a ‘quick study’ but rather should be allowed to seduce you and evolve in the glass and bottle.

Bob Morus was raised in California where he experienced wine first hand. He served in the U.S Airforce until 1990 before commercially flying Boeing 777s. During this time Phelps Creek was founded. The winery focuses on estate grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals, annually producing 5,000 cases. Intensive vineyard care combined with the Burgundian winemaking talents of Alexandrine Roy, a fourthgeneration winemaker from Gevrey-Chambertin produces stunning results.
