HOST CITY Skopje is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Macedonia with about a third of the total population. It is the country's political, cultural, economic, and academic centre. A visit to Skopje offers a unique opportunity to feel the spirit of its 2000 year old tradition. You can take a walk along the beautiful quay of the Macedonian river “Vardar”, stroll the narrow streets in the Old Bazaar or take a cable railway to the Millennium Cross and enjoy the perfect view over the whole city. Skopje is also internationally famous for being the birthplace of Mother Teresa and for the hospitability of its citizens. After the exciting day in Skopje, the tasteful Macedonian cuisine and delicious Macedonian wines will surely win you over. Some of the cultural monuments in Skopje to visit: Stone bridge - symbol of Skopje and connection between the modern city and the old town. Skopje fortress - built of stone blocks from the ruins of the city of Skupi, during the rule of the Romans, Czar Iustinianus the I-st. Mustafa Pasha Mosque - built by Mustafa Pasha, the vizier of Sultan Salem I in 1519. It is a big building of great aesthetic beauty. It has a square shape and in the upper part there is a dome. Particularly attractive part of this building is the tall minaret, made of cut stone, whereas the expanded part is decorated with ornaments. Old Bazaar in Skopje is the largest bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul. Situated on the eastern bank of the Vardar River, the bazaar has been the city's centre for trade and commerce since at least the 12th century and it has specificities and dynamics of its own kind. St.Pantelejmon Monastery in the village of Nerezi, near Skopje, is an old, wonderfully preserved Byzantine church from the middle of the 12th century and should be visited by anyone interested in Byzantine art. The Mother Teresa Memorial House - dedicated to the humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa and located in the centre of Skopje. The memorial house is situated in the popular “Macedonia” street, on the very location of the once Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman catholic church, where Mother Teresa was baptized. These activities will be in addition to the receptions and the conference dinner. Matka Canyon is a canyon located west of Skopje. It is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Macedonia and is the home to several medieval monasteries. There are 10 caves at Matka Canyon, with the shortest in length being 20 metres (65.6 feet) and the longest being 176 metres (577.4 feet). “Vrelo” cave is located on the right bank of the Treska River, and it was listed as one of the top 77 natural sites in the world in the New7Wonders of Nature project. ”Vrelo” cave has many stalactites including a large one in the middle of the cave known as the "Pine Cone" due to its shape. There are two lakes at the end of the cave, with one larger than the other. The smaller lake is 8 metres at its longest length and 15 metres in depth at its deepest point. The larger lake is 35 metres at its longest length, and 18 metres at its deepest point. Though the exact depth of the cave is unknown, some speculate that it could be the deepest underwater cave in the world. Matka Canyon
