Building Group Garners Construction Excellence Awards on ECU’s Student Union Center & WRAL Capitol Broadcasting Projects

Consistent with our efforts to continually improve all aspects of our business, we are making some changes to this newsletter. In short, you will be receiving them more frequently and there will be fewer pages. We will be producing the newsletter quarterly and each edition will feature one Civil Group division and one Building Group division along with various stories about our people, values and benefits. When you see her, please thank Becky Felton for the hard work that she puts in to creating such a fantastic product.

Staying on the topic of continuous improvement, we will be conducting another Employee Engagement Survey later this spring. Please participate with honest feedback. Simply put, the changes that we make in our company are largely driven by what we learn from this survey.

Looking through the stories in this newsletter, it is interesting to reflect back five years ago to 2015. That was when we recognized the need to deliberately plan for succession at all levels and to strive to preserve the values that are the foundation of our company. We began values-based leadership in 2015 out of a concern about how we were going to replace the foundational employees of our company who would soon be retiring. While this in an ongoing effort, we are in a much-improved position, as evidenced by some of what you will read in the following pages. I am so grateful for all of the employees who endeavor to leave this company better than they found it when they retire.

We feel very fortunate to have had a good year in 2019. The civil side of our company has had to contend with a NCDOT that is working through a cash problem. While we are blessed to have a State General Assembly that supports a good highway and paving program, we will likely have to endure some uncertainty with the DOT through this coming work season. However, our leadership has worked very hard to fill the void of DOT work and we expect to have a solid 2020. The Building Group is experiencing some significant growth and there remain significant opportunities in the marketplace. Since our last communication, the building group has restructured into five divisions - Eastern, Triangle, Charlotte, Western and Streamline led by John Smith, Mike Lutz, Mike Bedell, Chad Webb and Randy Fichera, respectively.

Finally, I will thank Scott Fisher for his many years with this company. He truly embodies the values of our company, most specifically ‘commitment.’ Scott has helped shape our Administrative and IT Departments over the last 48 years and for that we are very appreciative.

DARIUS SIMMONS AN E4E STORY Darius Simmons works as a shop technician in our Southeast Division and has been with our company since 2008. Recently, both Darius and his wife have struggled with some extenuating health issues and needed help. They decided to apply for the E4E Program and were approved for assistance!

“Both me and my wife are very grateful that Barnhill was able to provide help when it was very much needed,” said Darius. He and his wife fully support the program and are contributors themselves.

Darius’s story is just one of many as our E4E Program continues to grow.

SOUTHEAST DIVISION PILOTS EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM Our Emerging Leaders (EL) pilot program is off to a great start!

Launched in November, the program identifies and assesses employees who have high potential for leadership within the company and offers training in several areas: values-based leadership, safety, employee processes, organizational awareness (various job functions) and production.

The 2-year, voluntary program provides opportunities for individuals to develop their leadership potential.

“We asked our division managers to nominate someone who they thought of as being high potential,” explains Jeannie Gilchrist, human resources generalist. “The team completed a talent assessment for the division which ensured everyone was considered equally and there was consensus as to who our EL were.

The exercise identified others as well, but through the assessment and collaboration our four inaugural EL participants were chosen: Lavin Lowry (shop technician), Johnny Grice (plant maintenance technician), Robert Munn (grading crew) and Jarrett Herman (paving crew). The program allows fluidity in the timeline, development opportunities, number of participants and variables of the participants.”

Johnny and Lavin learned a lot from the Insights exercise, saying that it revealed their unique personalities and how they “show up” in the world. “It gave me a much better understanding of myself, how I like to be approached and how to work with others,” explains Lavin.

“I came into this job not knowing a thing and now I’m living the job of my dreams,” adds Jarrett. “Brian English [area manager] mentored me. I see how many people look up to Brian; I see the name he has and the amazing job he does; and that’s where I want to be in the future. I want to be a servant leader to the people I impact on my journey with this job…One day I want to be a foreman so I can continue to serve and give them 110%. I would like to lead projects on my own, from start to finish, and know that when I ride by on my days off, I can say, ‘We built that.’”

Robert has similar aspirations, “In order for me to meet my goal of being a foreman, there are several

milestones to be reached. I’m looking forward to learning more about the daily operations and gaining wisdom on being a safe and successful leader.”

“The program is a great asset to Barnhill because it shows that we are willing to invest in employees and promote from within,” adds Brian. “There are opportunities here and I believe that by participating in the program, Jarrett’s eyes have been opened to the possibilities and he’s willing to work toward that.”

Gabriel Ortiz, project superintendent on the Tanger Center, says his first large project for Barnhill has been full of challenges and opportunities.

“Our team overcame significant challenges to get here,” Wes says. “Given the difficulty of constructing a facility of this magnitude, the number of consultants (16) involved in the design, sequencing and weather delays, we had to pull together to anticipate issues in the field early, build in longer lead-time for consultant responses and build out of sequence to stay on schedule.”

This was an extremely difficult project to build with different elevations and radiuses, no pitch was the same throughout the structure, Ken explains. Add in significant weather delays caused by hurricanes in September and October 2018, with six feet of water flooding the basement and it’s a perfect storm.

Our team realized early on that they needed to take advantage of every opportunity to improve on schedule to meet the City’s opening date.

Crews worked weekends to gain on schedule, which required coordination with community events in the downtown area to ensure workers would have access to the site and put in long shifts throughout the week.

The Tanger Center is a game-changing addition to downtown Greensboro and with Barnhill’s efforts we will be able to deliver a first-class, state-of-the-art performing arts center for the City that will be enjoyed by generations to come.”

Jonathan Carver and Gabriel Ortiz (superintendents) who will introduce the state-of-the-art performance venue to Greensboro as Josh Groban opens the Tanger Center on March 20. The facility measures 108,260-SF and sits on 4.9 acres at the intersections of North Elm and Lindsay Streets and Abe Brenner Place, adjacent to LeBauer Park.

With seating for 3,023 guests, the Tanger Center is set to become the focal point of performing arts in the region, hosting nearly 150 events per year including Guilford College’s Bryan Series, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra performances, comedy shows and all types of entertainment including Broadway and other live theatrical productions. Highlights of the facility include the Schiffman Ring of Light which abuts the ceiling with 60 lights going off, counting down the seconds until showtime; an 3

“We held weekly subcontractor meetings, with 3-week schedule forecasts and got those upcoming trades ready to move in, stacking as many trades as possible. My primary role was a problem solver and every day brought a different

challenge. The owner directly contracted with several vendors, which required another level of oversight from our team.”

AROUND BARNHILL RETIREMENTS!

Barnhill held to the original delivery date of February 9 and has moved into the commissioning phase now, with crews focusing on project turnover and completing finishes for the three hospitality suites that were upgraded after the City received private sponsorship funding and adding a service elevator and exterior canopy.

“This is one of the best teams I have ever worked with,” adds Ken. “There aren’t any egos - we go to lunch, Grasshoppers games on the weekends. Our team is strong, with a lot of experience and we proactively managed the project from the start.

Watching Allen and Gabriel, they are both talented. They met with each of the owner-contracted subcontractors to understand what they needed from us to not let anything slide and stayed on top of things. When I started this project, I was told to train my replacement since I am retiring, and I think I have done that. Gabriel runs the meetings, works with the subs, I’m here as a resource. I give him advice if he asks, but it’s his to run. We’ve built a cool building, under budget, and made some good relationships with the people in Greensboro. I’m proud.”

GREENVILLE PROJECT DELIVERED ‘THE BARNHILL WAY’ Traveling got a bit faster in Greenville last November thanks to Barnhill’s Highway Division who successfully delivered the $175.6-million Southwest Greenville Bypass an impressive seven months early. The project was met with applause from representatives in Eastern North Carolina who have been eagerly awaiting its construction for more than three decades. With a population of 92,000 in 2017 and record growth of 32% over the past ten years, the city is home to several hospitals as well as East Carolina University, all of which rely heavily on infrastructure.

“Our job at DOT is to deliver the projects people want and need and will use. For that reason, the Southwest Bypass was accelerated as part of our efforts to improve project delivery and I am happy to report that we have delivered this project seven months early,” said Ronnie Keeter, PE eastern deputy chief engineer for NCDOT during the project’s ribbon cutting ceremony.

“One reason we were able to deliver it so quickly is that it was a

design-build project, which allows the design, construction and other aspects of the project to take place at the same time. This method of construction reduces unneeded delays, avoids cost inflation and saves the taxpayers money. It also alleviates driving delays because we can deliver the project early.”

saving NCDOT an estimated $3 million. “We were able to save some time on right-of-way acquisitions, and with the utility relocation schedule significantly reduced, we were able to begin work on the Y-line bridges sooner,” explains David Barnhill, general superintendent.

The project included a 4-lane 12.6mile freeway that begins two miles south of Ayden on NC 11, wraps around the west side of Ayden and Winterville and ends at the US 264 Bypass west of Greenville. It includes five interchanges and 22 bridges.

The project was divided into five work segments which were assigned to a foreman with oversight by superintendents. By segmenting the project, Barnhill was able to maximize overall construction operations through ease of material hauling, proximity to borrow pits, early bridge and culvert construction and optimizing construction operations away from traffic. Work was performed on all five segments of the job concurrently and planned to allow bridge access as early as possible to enable Sanford to begin bridge construction while Barnhill finished material hauling.

Barnhill’s design-build team comprised of Sanford Contractors (bridge construction) and HDR (design) put forth a strong technical proposal (scoring 95/100) where they embraced every opportunity for innovation and acceleration. In the field, grade separations were “flipped” to reduce earthwork, while maintaining the fill profile requirements, which prevented numerous utility relocations and eliminated 45 additional property impacts and three relocations, 7

“We had seven borrow pits to work from and consistently hauled from four at the same time,” explains Aaron Graven, project manager/

estimator. “Permitting delays pushed the construction start into September 2015, which meant the possibility of bad weather early on the project.

David and I decided to push on schedule from the beginning. We would rather work Saturdays at the start than Saturdays and Sundays at the end. We wanted to be well positioned going into winter, which worked in our favor since, given the mild weather, we were able to haul through the cold months.”

HDR. “It was a pleasure working with them, at times we were in daily contact. It’s no wonder that the R-2250 project went so smoothly and was delivered ahead of schedule.

They stayed on top of every aspect of the project to head off potential problems before they had a chance to become a concern for NCDOT. Aaron and David earned and kept the trust of the NCDOT Division staff with their knowledge and experience.”

Additionally, our borrow sources were not weather dependent, which enabled us to continue hauling in wet conditions. In total, we moved more than five million cubic yards of material over 17 months.”

Both Aaron and David put a heavy emphasis on collaboration in the field and held monthly progress meetings with their internal field teams to ensure everyone understood where the project stood in terms of schedule and budget.

The Highway Division assembled a highly-skilled team for the Bypass, which is the company’s largest project to date. Working alongside David in the field were Roddy Morgan (superintendent), Clint Townsend, Tim Smith, Jon Naylor, Lee Daniel, Faustino Guerrero, Lisa Hall, Bill Gielen, Andrew Wilson (foremen), Marshall Edwards and Alicia Ervin (project engineers).

Additional forces were brought in from our Northeast Division and paving was completed by our Rocky Mount/Greenville, Coastal and Raleigh Divisions.

“Our team worked their tails off,” David says. “Hurricane Matthew came through right after we got started, pushing us back a few weeks after we were already delayed from 401 permitting. In total, we were probably four months behind our original start date. We established a final completion date of June 28, 2019 in our technical proposal which was earlier than NCDOT specified. We felt confident in our ability to accelerate that schedule even more.”

“Throughout construction Aaron and David reached out with design questions and took a proactive role in resolving issues as they arose,” says Domenic Wainwright, PE with

“David really drives the idea of the ‘Barnhill Way,’” explains Aaron. “He approaches every detail of the project by making decisions based on what is in the best interest of the job. He’s the best leader we have.

He really cares about people. With him on the job every day, we were able to build a real team atmosphere. During our monthly meetings, our foremen really bought into the bigger picture. They were able to reconcile cost and production in the field with how the job was estimated and to form a cohesive unit to move progress forward. We succeeded as one team.”

Andrew Wilson plans to use Greenville’s collaborative approach on all his projects, “Because of those meetings, and the information that was shared, we understood how things were bid and the cost associated with it. We knew if we were below cost and making money, where we were on the overall budget and were able to identify both efficiencies and inefficiencies.

Using the top-down approach was key to our team’s success. It’s a model for me.”

LIVING THE BARNHILL MISSION

There’s no one-size-fits-all kind of leader. The kind of leader an organization needs always depends on the situation. And, there’s no better place for consistent, steady, discerning leadership than in the ever-changing world of information technology. For the past 42 years, Scott Fisher has led Barnhill’s IT efforts and on February 28, he retired after 48 years of service.

“Scott is a quiet leader,” says Tom Shannon, IT project manager. “Quiet leaders focus on action instead of words and can encourage ownership and develop loyalty in unique ways.

Scott is consistent, he shows up every day with a plan and you know what you are getting from him for that day. He is super dependable with an even keel demeanor so that even the most stressful situations don’t seem to bother him. And, he always does the right thing. It doesn’t matter if it’s the toughest option. He will do it if it’s the right thing to do. No shortcuts – the right thing, all the time.”

Our Raleigh office found a way to give back and add a competitive edge.

The competition to give back heated up with the Streamline, Triangle and Raleigh Divisions competing against one another to see who could collect the most toys for the Duke University Medical Center Facility, Design & Construction Toy Drive. Together, our divisions delivered more than 200 toys for pediatric patients at Duke Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Lincoln Community Health Center, Duke Lenox Baker Children’s Hospital and Duke Children’s Primary Care Clinic. The Ronald McDonald House expressed their gratitude to Barnhill saying, “Your incredible donations of toys, bikes and so many gifts were overwhelming! This time of the year is especially challenging for our families with seriously ill children.”

Working on a highway crew seems an unlikely start for an IT guy, but that’s exactly where Scott began his career with Barnhill. Scott worked summers on the road crew while he attended NC State for two years and then joined the company full time in 1975 after earning a BS in business administration from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. Training under Lacy Woods and Thurmon Jones, Scott worked his way up to foreman and says his favorite early-career memories included time spent on the road, “I would fly my Cessna 175 up to the job site in Front Royal, VA and stay all week. It was a great job for a young, single guy. A lot of fun.”

“It felt good to know that children at Duke Children’s Hospital would have a smile and nice present on Christmas Day,” said Josh Carlyle, project manager with the Streamline Division, which collected the most toys and earned bragging rights for the year! Thanks to all of our Barnhill team members for living our Barnhill mission!

“Mr. Barnhill recommended Scott and through those duties he became involved with our IT operations. At the time we were running an IBM System/3 computer which had one operator and one screen. We felt like Scott would be a good fit for this position with his field experience and technical skills. Obviously, that was a good decision. Scott has been instrumental in our IT expansion to where we are today. We have a multitude of users and a job and equipment costing system that is as good, or better than, any of our competitors.”

“Barnhill has been a great place to build a career,” says Scott. “The company is family owned, financially strong and has family values. I have always felt appreciated and valued here. I believe it’s important to understand operations in the field as well as operations in the office. My career has allowed me to work in different areas of the company and have an appreciation for the various jobs that go into making us successful.”

“I have loved my job,” he adds. “I’m a problem solver, I like to see results. Technology is allowing us to make better decisions faster. We can customize reports and make adjustments in real time in the field, which is amazing to me given that I can remember pulling string-line in the field.”

“Scott and I have worked together for 48 years,” adds Lee Cooper,

Ushering in new technology requires a steady hand and an ability to build consensus, both strong suits for Scott. “We installed our first personal computer network in 1998 and since that time, technology and information systems have increased rapidly. Our philosophy at Barnhill has been to be on the leading edge, but not the bleeding edge of technology innovation. Sometimes the best decision is to pass on buying a system because it’s not right for the organization. It’s hugely important to be able to determine the best fit for Barnhill, because investing in technology requires an investment of both time and money. I have seen great strides in technology and 10

executive vice president. “He’s a very smart individual and exhibits all the characteristics you would want in an employee and a friend. Scott knew the operations of Barnhill and was always looking for new technology to make us a better company.”

“In the more than 12 years I have worked with Scott I can’t remember a single time I have seen him without a smile,” says Arthur Reed, IT systems administrator. “No matter what Scott was working on, he would always set aside time when you walked into his office to make you feel like your issue was the most important thing going on. BUILDING GROUP PROJECTS HONORED WITH CAGC EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION AWARDS

Congratulations to our East Carolina University Student Union Center JV project team with TA Loving Company.

The Student Union Center was awarded a Construction Excellence Award by the Carolinas AGC! The Student Center encompasses 214,000 SF and serves as the premier focal point for both the campus and community.

The Student Center blends key elements that represent the people and industries of Eastern North Carolina, the City of Greenville, and ECU Pirate traditions. Thanks to our outstanding project team: Barry Harden, Perry Whitford, Matt Ruffin, Peter Delorier and Michael Simms.

Our Capitol Broadcasting Company WRAL Renovation project garnered a Construction Excellence Award from the Carolinas AGC. To provide more space and a secure entrance to the building, Barnhill constructed a 12,000 SF addition and renovated 14,500 SF of the existing building. The greatest challenge on the project was noise management as the existing facility was located directly adjacent to two large television studios and the main control room for all of CBC’s television broadcasts.

During broadcast times, construction activities were suspended, or performed with minimal disruption.
