BY JENNIFFER WARDELL Clipper Staff Writer CENTERVILLE — Not all of Centerville’s history happened down in the valley. The stories of the people and events that lived, explored, and shaped Centerville’s mountains come to life in Royce Allen’s “Tales, Trails, and Sites of the Centerville Mountains,” currently on sale for cost at Centerville City Hall and other sites throughout the city. The book, which combines new maps of all of Centerville’s trails with detailed stories and GPS locations for the sites in those stories, is Allen’s way of bringing attention to how interesting the city’s mountains are. “All of these stories were being told, but no one was writing them down,” said Allen, who first heard many of them as a member of the city’s historic sites committee.“I love the mountains, and wanted to preserve their history.” The book starts with the history of the area, ranging from the early settlers to the prehistoric Lake Bonneville that once covered most of the Wasatch Front. The lake history also covers the geology of the area, pointing out terracing in the nearby rocks and the effects of

All of this serves as a background for the stories, which range from a crashed airplane to an old mill that used to be on the mountainside before it was washed out.Another story is about George Evans, who was well known for having a mine up in the mountains around Centerville and could be quite colorful at times. There are more solemn stories as well, including the history of a small white cross and a grave that remains up in the moun-

tains to this day. The book includes GPS coordinates leading people to all of the sites attached to the stories, along with new maps of all the city trails that Allen put together using GPS and ariel photography.Allen worked with the city’s trails committee on the new maps. For many of the sites, however, the GPS and colored photographs of the area are going to be a lot more useful in getting readers where they need to go. “Lots of the sites don’t have trails to them,” said

WEST BOUNTIFUL — Just in time for tax season, Pete Shingledecker shared information on tax laws and the recent changes to them at last week’s Bountiful Breakfast Exchange Club. Shingledecker, who owns a Jackson Hewitt tax preparation franchise in Clearfield told Exchangites of the various tax credits that are available to taxpayers including the earned income credit, child tax credit, and educational credits, and reminded them that the Bush-era tax cuts were extended for two more years. Shingledecker has operated a Jackson Hewitt franchise since 2003.While his principal office is in

Allen.“So you have to know where they are and how to get there.” The book also includes a section that doubles as a hiking activity guide, identifying everything from utility substations to common bugs that hikers might encounter on the different trails. There’s also information on geocaching, which is essentially collaborative treasure hunting using GPS coordinates. The book includes information about geocaching sites in the Centerville mountains, along with an explanation of how geocaching works. The book costs $15, and received only a limited printing.Though Allen estimated that it would take about three and a half years for the book to sell out, 70 percent of them were sold in the first four months since the book was released. “It might still take three and a half years for the rest,” he said.“But we’ve had a good response so far.”

Clearfield, he has additional offices in Salt Lake City, and, during tax time he also has offices located in Walmarts in Clinton, Syracuse, Layton, Harrisville and Riverdale. Shingledecker told club members that Jackson Hewitt is the second largest individual tax preparer in the nation. He said one of the key reasons he selected the company was the ease of use of its proprietary software. He is proud of the accuracy rates of returns filed in his offices, 99 percent compared to the franchise average accuracy rate of 95 percent. mwilliams@davisclipper.com

Bountiful composer Raymond Cook won second prize in arrangement for his “For the Beauty of the Earth,” written for 16 unaccompanied voices. The Ruth Gatrell Singers will perform “Faith Precedes the Miracle,” Gatrell’s award-winning piece about the boy whose hip was shot away at the Haun’s Mill
