Scouting for Food helps fill hunger void Davis Clipper • April 8, 2010

Those in charge of Davis County’s two food pantries say the recent Scouting for Food Drive went a long way in helping the county’s hungry residents. “Our shelves are full. We’re as happy as can be,” said Dave Karcher, director of operations for the Bountiful Community Food Pantry. South Davis residents gave just over 100,000 pounds of food to the annual drive. In north Davis County residents gave 110,000 pounds of food. Both numbers were down from last year, but Gene Lopez, community action director at the Family Connection Center’s food bank in Layton, said that with the Postal Carrier’s food drive scheduled in May, the amount of food collected should get them through the summer months.

DAVIS COUNTY RESIDENTS gave more than 200,000 pounds of food at the recent Scouting for Food drive. Both food banks are seeing an increase in the numbers they serve. Lopez said they are seeing about 30 percent more people than at this time last year, and Karcher said they are serving about 1,600 individuals or 500 families in south Davis. March, he said is a little slower. He said they see

their highest numbers in November and December. Both men gave credit for the food drive’s success to the hundreds of Scouts who donate much of a Saturday to collect and unload the food. Lopez said there were five sites between South Weber and Farmington

where sacks of food from neighborhoods were collected before being brought to the Layton food bank. In south Davis, Scouts with trailers were stationed at Woods Cross High school and two Centerville locations. “It made it a lot simpler for the Scouts to bring (the food) to those remote locations,” Karcher said. In addition, two groups of Scouts were stationed at the Bountiful Community Food Pantry to help unload those trailers. Senior Scouts volunteering in Bountiful set up tables and cooked up bacon, eggs, and pancakes for all the volunteers, and the truck drivers. Karcher said the operation went smoothly because they used two forklifts, one inside the warehouse, one outside. Together “they made it really nice, almost effortless,” he said. The operation in Bountiful was wrapped up by 2 p.m.
