Letters Is egg rolling a crime in Bountiful? Editor: Is egg rolling against the law in Bountiful? Our family went to the hill behind Boulton school on Sunday. Several people were just leaving as we made it up the hill. A Bountiful police officer stopped them. Several people were arriving with eggs, and the officer sent them away. When a backup patrol car joined him, the officers walked up the hill to confront us. “Whose idea was this?”My grandchildren promptly told them “grandma.” (I am a great-grandmother). Then he asked, “Do you think this is a good idea to teach your grandchildren?” I asked him if he had ever rolled eggs as a child. He said,“We aren’t from around here.” I told him people across the nation roll easter eggs, including the president with his daughters. “Who is going to clean up the mess?” I said the flock of sea gulls at the bottom of the hill are eating every crumb. He said that if I wanted to keep arguing with him that I could be arrested for “Criminal Mischief”. He then said that eggs do not belong on the lawn. Eggs belong only in three places (1) in your stomach (2) on your plate or (3) in a chicken’s butt. We and other

neighbors have done this for years. He said “That does not make it right.” Children playing here will step on eggshells. I wanted to say “They could dig in the dirt for cat poop,” but I restrained myself. We are looking for another city to roll eggs next year. Perhaps if we roll donuts down the hill the police will come and eat them. Sharon Bench Woods Cross Editor’s note: The Clipper checked with Bountiful Police to get perspective on this incident. We were told that it is not against any city or county ordinance, or state law, to roll Easter Eggs. Bountiful Police reacted to the situation, however, because they received a complaint from a man and his family who were playing in the schoolyard. They saw two groups of people throwing eggs at the school, parking lot and playground equipment. Police responded to what they described as a possible case of criminal mischief. Police are not sure who had caused the mess, which may have been created by people at the site prior to the arrival of the Bench family.

Nielson great candidate for District 19 Editor: As the Davis County Republican Convention approaches, I wish to comment on a candidate in the District 19 Legislative race I feel best supports the Republican Platform: Jim Nielson. I was co-chair of the 1996 Davis County Republican Platform Committee that edited and presented the Republican platform to the Convention. The main principle behind the platform that Republicans are expected to be different than Democrats in Utah. We want candidates that understand the proper role of government and understand that limited government on all levels is vital for the maximum economic and social freedoms for Utahns and Americans. Being a personal friend of Jim Nielson

for 16 years, I know him to be among the best candidates ever to run. He has been consistent and firm in supporting, promoting and defending all the Republican principles, which serve to preserve our country’s freedoms and rights. His serving for six years with Ronald Reagan in Washington has provided him with the needed principles and experiences that will keep us on the right track. He understands common sense legislation and policy. He has proven to me that he sees through bad legislation, and bad policies that are not in the people’s best interest. We seriously need Jim Nielson as our District 19 Legislative Representative. Catherine Barlow Bountiful
