HOUSING 3.0

ECO - NEST VILLAGE

L8, LIVERPOOL

The project aims to explore the meaning of ‘household’, moving beyond the outdated notion of the traditional ‘nuclear family’, and identifying ways to accommodate the needs and domestic rituals of comtemporary society in ways that reflects its diversity both now and in the near future.

The concept of the project is to create a community of homes for residents through the provision of internal and external private amenity space within the building, aiming to generate a social culture in and around the living environment.

PRECEDENT STUDY

CHIMNEY POT PARK, SALFORD BY SHED KM

“Each house has its own private decked area and planters, but an open feel is maintained to promote a sense of community between the occupiers that had long since disappeared. This simple innovation has given new life to a potentially redundant housing stock and increased the green space of the area.”

CONCEPT SKETCHES MASTERPLANNING

The project proposes a street composed as a coherent whole in the group masterplan proposal. The body of the district is made up of a combination of various housing typologies oriented north - south, inviting you to cross the street laterally along the openings.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW

MASTERPLANNING + ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY

Permeable surface treatment will be applied to all the pathways in the form of granite paving slabs. This non-slip texture of the stone ensures that pedestrians and cyclists can move around safely, even if the weather is wet.

Each house within the development will apply with triple-glazed windows to minimise the requirement for supplementary heating by effectively retaining internal warmth. Additionally, the use of triple glazing will enhance acoustic insulation, particularly advantageous for the street garden units.

Each house will be equipped with its own smart meter, providing residents with convenient access to their energy and electricity usage in order to let homeowners to actively manage their energy consumption, thereby working towards reducing utility costs.

Each house will be having one deciduous tree in the backyard to respond to Liverpool’s seasonal weather variations. In summer, these trees will be in full foliage, offering valuable shading to homes most susceptible to heat. In winter, as the leaves shed, sunlight will penetrate the house through backyard glazed window.

The street garden provides a direct pedestrian and bicycle link, increasing permeability and adding to the verdant qualities of the site.

Green walls will be incorporated into each house’s backyard fencing. These installation serve multiple purposes, including the reduction of local wind speeds and traffic noise, enhancement of air quality, and mitigation of heat loss from the house, and improve physical and mental health and well-being.

Rainwater from the pitch roof and permeable pavement will be collected to underground tanks for reuse within the homes’ toilet systems, effectively conserving potable water. Additionally, it will be used as second source for district heating system to reduce the demand on municipal sources.

District heating systems can be more efficient and environmentally friendly compared to individual heating systems, particularly if they using renewable energy sources or waste heat.

All pathways within the area are designated for pedestrians. The emphasis will be on encouraging walking and cycling as primary consideration of transportation.

The communal areas welcome every resident to access for outdoor interaction. These areas feature greenery space for recreational activities and exercise.

This three-bedroom home draws from the terraced house design and is suitable for replication in multiple units. Upon entry, a hallway offers storage for coats and shoes before opening into the main living area. The high ceilings and large windows create a spacious, well-lit interior. Beneath the staircase, a utility area and downstairs toilet are tucked away, while built-in storage units enhance functionality in the living room.

L8 TRANSFORMATION

L8, LIVERPOOL

The project aims to introduce a sustainable and expansive program by targeting the quality of pedestrian interactions. A regenerated train station and a new scenic transport route cascading through the site stands to be the catalyst for future urban developments.

CONSTRAINT AND OPPORTUNITY

Cons:

- Poorly maintained public park

- Restrictive permeability and lack of cycle routes

- Low quality and abandoned business

- Aged and low-quality housing

- Low-quality terrace housing

Opp:

-Creation of a welcoming space for the new train station

- An expansive cycle and pedestrian route would encourage travel via train

- A new retail district would allow for a Baltic

Market Extension

- Reclaiming materials to redevelop the existing and improve the housing quality

- The construction of event spaces and places for activity would complement the primary schools.

- Church regeneration could accommodate events, celebrations and cultural events

Car rates in the L8 areas are high compared to cycling or walk due to the longer travel time and safety concern.

MASTERPLAN

PROPOSED MASTERPLANNING DRAWING

Located South of the city centre, Toxteth compliments Liverpool via its dynamic history and diverse cultural heritage. However, neglect of financial investment has plummeted the area’s quality of life, leading to a need for fresh urban revitalisation.

The pedestrian-first transport route acts as a verdant juxtaposition to the concrete chaos enveloping the city by weaving the urban fabric of the communities together. Spacious and illuminated, the space is a safe promenade saught to cherish the passage of travel.

NEWSHAM PARK BANDSTAND

L6, LIVERPOOL

The project is to restore the Bandstand Area of Newsham Park in Liverpool to once again become a vibrant and safe focus for Community activities and a most valuable local resource. The Bandstand itself is Victorian, Grade 2 listed, beautiful, loved, and desperately neglected despite our efforts.

The Site and Planning Policy

Newsham Park Bandstand

The park and its immediately surrounding residential areas are also protected under the Newsham Park Conservation Area. Historic England categorises its general condition as poor; vulnerability as low and the trend as “no significant change”.

As is evident in the extract from the Liverpool Local Plan Policies Map (2013-2033), Newsham Park is protected with a variety of policies relating to heritage and the protection of green spaces. Newsham Park itself is listed as a “Historic Park” with a Grade-II listing. The park and its immediately surrounding residential areas are also protected under the Newsham Park Conservation Area. Historic England categorises its general condition as poor; vulnerability as low and the trend as “no significant change”. No conservation area appraisal report is known to exist. All of the housing within the conservation area, and much beyond that boundary, is covered under an “HMO Designated Neighbourhood” policy, which reacts to the rising trend for HMO conversions of existing dwellings in the region; effectively applying stricter control over these developments. Eight listed buildings exist within the conservation area, not including the “Historic Park” listing. All buildings are Grade-II listed and are generally distributed in the plots surrounding the park. The Bandstand is the sole Grade-II listed structure within the Park.

Newsham Park Bandstand

Newsham Park, established in 1868, is one of Liverpool’s oldest public parks. Designed by Edward Kemp, it originally stood on the city’s eastern outskirts but became central as urban development surrounded it. Initially, some land was earmarked for other purposes, but by the 1890s, it was incorporated into the park’s expansion. A bandstand and boulevard were added, though Orphan Drive was lost over time. Recent investment has rejuvenated the park’s northern side with new facilities, but the southern end remains neglected, with the bandstand in need of further restoration.

SITE PLAN SITE INTRODUCTION

Newsham

Our proposal splits the site into 5 phases, focusing on all the elements with descending importance so as to better allocate funding and overall resources in order to make this project a success.

Phase 1 seeks to restore the bandstand to its original glory and more, making it the ideal centrepiece to the south end of the park. Additionally, this phase focuses on the immediate environment surrounding the bandstand.

Phase 2 seeks to make good use of the empty green space by the south entrance, turning it into allotments for public or private use and incorporating a shared community tool shed and compost station.

Phase 3 focuses on the hard surface elements of the park, recreating the roundabout and adjusting the former boulevard entrance to be more user friendly.

Phase 4 completely changes the existing use of the former bowling lawn, bringing to it a children’s play area, a hedge maze with picnic tables and a space for exercise equipment.

Phase 5 focuses on the revitalisation of the surrounding boulevard by ensuring a more natural habitat is created, and through it a nature trail.
