Gemma Davies
Business & Finance Director
From CAD Technician to Director: 25 Years of Dedication, Growth & Leadership
Gemma worked alongside her dad, Founder Phil Davies, for 22 years, not just building a successful business, but laying the groundwork for a collaborative, progressive team. Today, Davies Partnership operates as a successful Mechanical, Electrical, and Sustainability Building Services consultancy across three locations, with a team of exceptional people. A feat not possible without the compassionate leadership of our Business & Finance Director, Gemma.

Gemma has always demonstrated the strength of a true leader. Her naturally reserved nature, paired with a logical and analytical mind, gives her the ability to approach challenges with clarity and calm.
Beginning her career as an Accounts Assistant and ISO Internal Auditor for a local business, where she built a strong foundation in finance and quality systems, Gemma was never too far from the family business. Working behind the scenes, helping with admin and accounts, it wasn’t until another of the original directors, Mike Flanagan, recognised her potential and suggested she join as a CAD technician. Gemma progressed to the role of CAD Manager, then became instrumental in setting up the company’s Sustainability offering and gaining Low Carbon Consultant and Energy Assessor accreditation. After several years as part of the engineering team, she moved into the world of business and finance in 2014.

WORKING WITH DAD
“One of the biggest honours of my life has been working alongside my dad. Founding the business in 1996, he took a leap of faith whilst raising a young family and paying a mortgage. His care, commitment, and belief in people still influences how we lead today. I’m incredibly proud to have worked with Phil the businessman and to be able to call him my dad. He saw confidence in me, when maybe I didn’t; he saw a future for me and made sure I was prepared for it. I was never just handed a job because of who I am, Dad made sure I earned it, continuing to learn with every step up the ladder. To work with him, support the growth of the business, and earn my place as a Director has been one of my greatest achievements.”
GEMMA’S
IMPACT

“Gemma’s role in the business evolved from undertaking CAD to an Environmental Technician, specialising in Part L compliance. This put the business at the forefront of consultants at the time, able to offer this essential specialist service for Building Regulation compliance. Perhaps an unlikely candidate to take over the administration and finance of the business; her adaptability, reliability and detailed approach was such that she was given the challenge. She grasped it with both hands and has gone on to not only improve existing systems but identify the need to develop new ones, and a key part of the success of the business as it developed. Now in her role as Business and Finance Director on the board, she has been recognised by other business leaders and her peers in the industry by being nominated for and winning several regional awards.”
Phil Davies, Davies Partnership Founder and Gemma’s Dad.
“How can you pick just one moment from a 25-year career that means the most? I suppose it’s not one particular moment, but the everyday wins and the profound respect we have for one another. A third of our team has been together for over 10 years, and knowing the culture and environment we’ve created is something I’m deeply proud of. It has been a privilege to witness our team, many promoted from within, rise through the ranks from Technical Support Technician to Sustainability Associate, from Electrical Design Engineer to Managing Director.”
“Our board were all promoted from engineering roles, giving us a broad understanding of every area of the business. We’ve built a culture that pulls together, even through the toughest times. During the pandemic, for example, we spoke every day and supported each other to make sure that we came out stronger on the other side. That kind of unity is rare and I’m so proud to be part of it.”

LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP – WHAT I HAVE LEARNT
PUT PEOPLE FIRST
Whether it’s our team or our clients, treating people with honesty, care, and respect is fundamental.
ADAPT WITH PURPOSE
From launching our Sustainability Department in 2006 to navigating the pandemic, change has always been met with teamwork and thoughtful action.
STRONG FOUNDATIONS LEAD TO STRONG FUTURES
My early experience in finance, engineering, and sustainability has given me a unique and holistic view of the business.
LEAD BY LISTENING
As someone who’s naturally quiet, I’ve learned that listening well is a leadership strength.
STAY GROUNDED IN YOUR VALUES
Integrity, collaboration, and long-term thinking are at the core of everything we do.
THE GEMMA EFFECT
Gemma would profess that the most significant change in herself has been confidence. “Not having a naturally confident or outgoing personality, I’ve had to remind myself that I am capable. Surrounding myself with a supportive team has made a real difference. From leading teams to being interviewed on video, things that once felt daunting now feel like part of the job. I’ve grown into someone who can lead with quiet confidence and stand tall in rooms where I once felt invisible.” This kind of raw honesty is what young people need to hear. You can do it. It is possible. And you don’t have to change who you are to do.
Rebecca is now in her seventh year with DP and has always worked closely with Gemma - so who better to offer a testament?
“Gemma has played a key role in helping me progress in my career. She has taught me many new skills and consistently offers guidance when needed. She is very patient and always takes the time to explain things in detail until I fully understand. Gemma clearly outlines next steps and sets achievable targets, which has helped me stay focused and continue developing. Her approachable nature makes it easy to ask for help and support whenever I need it.”
Rebecca Dolan, Business & HR Administrator | Davies Partnership.
WORDS TO LEAD BY
“Stay humble. Stay curious. Don’t be afraid to grow slowly, just make sure you’re growing. Surround yourself with people who lift others up, and be that person when you can. Also, never underestimate the power of a biscuit and a bit of singing in the office to turn a day around!”
Richard Lewis
Technical
and Quality Director
EST. JAN 2015

Commissioning Champion
Sustainability Specialist
Apprenticeship Ambassador
It’s hard to imagine Davies Partnership without Richard. This year (2025) marks a decade since he joined the team – ten years of relentless drive, innovation, and influence.
From day one, Richard has had the most incredible impact on the team and the business. As a mentor, a fountain of knowledge and an extraordinary engineer, Richard leaves a lasting impact on everyone he works with. Whether he is grilling manufacturers on product specifications or advocating for the most sustainable, carbon-neutral design scheme, Richard’s intentions are always for the greater good – he’s the Martin Lewis of Sustainable Living.
He truly lives the story he tells. Over recent years, he’s undertaken a personal transition away from Scope 1 emissions — electrifying his home heating, installing solar PV, replacing both cars with BEVs, and switching all garden tools and his lawnmower to electric. In fact, the only Scope 1 emission left is his beloved Italian motorbike. It covers very few miles each year but provides countless hours of tinkering pleasure - and serves as a valuable outlet from the pressures of day-to-day life.
With his tenure comes reflection on his greatest achievements outside of the Davies team, and it’s no surprise that his most treasured accomplishments all share similar attributes: Ambition, Balance, and Commitment.
EARNING A FIRST-CLASS HONOURS DEGREE IN ENERGY ENGINEERING COMPLETING THE THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE THE BIRTH OF HIS TWO CHILDREN
FOUNDING A BUILDING SERVICES COMMISSIONING COMPANY
His critical contributions to crucial societal sectors specifically Residential, Healthcare and Education, and his revolutionary approach to Quality Control have set new benchmarks for excellence within the industry, extending well beyond Davies Partnership.
THE EVOLUTION OF A TECHNICAL AND QUALITY DIRECTOR
In 2019, as part of a major review of business management processes, Davies Partnership created the role of Technical and Quality Director, appointing Richard to address these challenges and elevate design standards. One of the most significant structural changes was the separation of M&E design delivery from M&E quality control. Two distinct departments were established: Operations, led by Operations Director Peter Lyke, and Quality, led by Richard.
“I was empowered to withhold the release of any design that did not meet our high quality threshold. Every design now passes through a dedicated mechanical and electrical quality control team.”
Today, quality is recognised as Davies Partnership’s key Unique Selling Point and the foundation of its continued success.

APPRENTICESHIP AMBASSADOR
“How do I stay motivated and passionate about my work? I’ve always believed you’re born an engineer. Engineering is an integral part of who I am, and I couldn’t imagine life without it. As I’ve grown older, two motivations have become increasingly central to my work:
Decarbonising the construction industry &
Developing the next generation of engineers
Richard is extremely passionate about delivering a high-quality apprenticeship scheme, ensuring that young engineers are surrounded by our best people, equipped with the right tools, provided with meaningful guidance, and inspired to raise quality standards across the industry for years to come. Richard reflects on one of his most rewarding moments during his time at here:
“I watched a junior engineer, who had joined us just the year before, explain an aspect of mechanical design to one of our new apprentices in exactly the same way I had taught him only months earlier. I couldn’t have been prouder. Moments like this give me real confidence in the future of our company and of our industry as a whole.”
“I HAVE LOOKED IN THE MIRROR EVERY MORNING AND ASKED MYSELF: ‘IF TODAY WERE THE LAST DAY OF MY LIFE, WOULD I WANT TO DO WHAT I AM ABOUT TO DO TODAY?’ AND WHENEVER THE ANSWER HAS BEEN ‘NO’ FOR TOO MANY DAYS IN A ROW, I KNOW I NEED TO CHANGE SOMETHING.”

SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Richard’s approach to sustainability extends beyond design. He genuinely cares about how people live and use the buildings we create, long after handover. His focus on better living, decarbonisation, and future-proofing ensures every project contributes positively to both people and the planet.
Following the 1990 recession, Richard co-founded his own commissioning company, delivering projects across the South East for major national M&E contractors. He credits this period as pivotal, providing invaluable practical insight that remains one of the most powerful tools in his professional toolkit.
“Through the application of Whole Life Carbon assessments, I am committed to driving meaningful change. I actively support the Part Z whole life carbon campaign alongside many leading organisations in the sector. My goal is to help make this approach mainstream across the UK and to assist manufacturers in producing Environmental Product Declarations, ultimately improving the quality and accuracy of Whole Life Carbon assessments.”

Peter Hughes joined Davies Partnership in January 2023 as an LJMU Masters Mechanical graduate. Since his arrival, Peter has worked closely with Richard, consistently challenging ideas, learning from experience, and bringing a fresh perspective. The mutual respect between them is clear, both recognising the path followed and the journey to come.
Richard
“Peter’s eagerness to learn and genuine engagement in his work, challenge and advance our design processes. He consistently demonstrates both client focus and teamwork. Investing time and effort in refining our process is now paying dividends - we’re bringing in talented individuals who strengthen both our business and culture. Encouraging more firms to follow this path would bring long-term benefits to the industry. Peter, along with our apprentices, has truly restored my faith in the next generation of engineers.”
Peter
“Richard has been a true mentor and a constant source of support throughout my career. His guidance, encouragement, and genuine care have made an incredible difference to both my professional growth and confidence. Richard has an exceptional talent for supporting and developing those around him — he takes the time to listen, share his knowledge, and challenge you in ways that help you grow. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from him and to work alongside someone with such a passion for what he does.”

REFLECTIONS ON CHANGE
“The most significant change in myself has been moving beyond the imposter syndrome that so many engineers experience in the early and middle stages of their careers. I’ve come to understand that we are all learning every day - nobody has all the answers. Each of us carries strengths and weaknesses; while the weaknesses fade with experience, there’s no such thing as a ‘finished article’ .”

Davies Partnership collaborates with
City of Liverpool College
on bridging the skills gap.
The construction industry is currently facing a nationwide skills shortage across the board, from skilled tradespeople to technical consultants. According to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), an additional 250,000 construction workers will be required by 2028 to meet demand. Although 200,000 new workers entered the industry in 2023, over 210,000 left the sector in the same year.
Whilst there are several solutions proposed to tackle this crisis, Davies Partnership are choosing to make their contribution through continued investment into apprenticeships.
Davies Partnership have long been committed to nurturing emerging talent and have recently taken this further by launching a prestigious Graduate Apprenticeship Scheme. This programme offers a college leaver a fully-funded degree apprenticeship each year.
In 2025, the team took on two new apprentices. Both students have been enroled on the Building Services Engineering degree at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). One is following the traditional Mechanical Engineering route, while the other is specialising in Electrical Engineering.
Enter The City of Liverpool College’s College For Business, which through its innovative training and development solutions offers bespoke training packages to strengthen businesses. These might include pre-employment skills, re-skilling and professional development programmes.
With the LJMU Building Services Engineering degree programme being heavily weighted toward mechanical studies, Davies Partnership needed a tailored solution to properly support their electrical engineering apprentices. The College For Business, an adaptable and forward-thinking institution, was quick to collaborate and help shape the additional curriculum that was required.
A solid understanding of electrical principles, an area not covered in sufficient depth in the LJMU Building Services degree, prompted them to approach the College for support.
It was this kind of proactive partnership that led Davies Partnership and The City of Liverpool College to implement additional modules focused on delivering the foundational principles and core concepts of electrical engineering that could work in parallel with the degree programme.
Collaboration and the College’s proactive approach in helping us provide the key components and training needed for our electrical apprentices aligned with the LJMU programme has been key.
“We identified an issue, and CoLC worked with us to find a solution that will benefit not only ourselves but the wider Building Services industry. What started as a chance conversation with Peter Sandman from CoLC quickly turned into a positive engagement, where it became clear that we both had a desire to put an effective plan into action,” he added.
In addition to supporting college leavers, Davies Partnership are also actively engaging with schools to encourage students with an interest in engineering to consider the apprenticeship pathway.

Tony noted; “Apprenticeships are having a real renaissance at the moment and are creating some amazing opportunities, but they are also going to be a huge driver in meeting future skills gaps in our industry. The benefits for the apprenticeship route are clear, with the accelerated progression of spending 80% of their time in the work environment with skilled professionals and mentors, being paid a salary, and the big kicker being no debt when completing their studies and a full-time job to walk into.
“When an apprentice electrical engineer decides to follow the traditional foundation-first path, they were effectively committing to seven years of study, which felt overwhelming and had been a barrier in the past. This new dual study option now enables both mechanical and electrical engineers to progress through the LJMU degree programme at the same pace,” he adds.
Furthermore, with 90% of the cost of degree apprenticeships covered by government funding, this approach is attractive to employers. For the apprentice, it means earning while learning — without the debt or pressure of a purely academic route.
It is hoped that by opening up this new path of learning, other Building Services consultancies will be encouraged to consider a similar approach. If more businesses in the region come on board, this new route has the potential to become a staple of The City of Liverpool College’s academic offering.
Whilst Davies Partnership may only be beginning their relationship with The City of Liverpool College, the future certainly looks bright for them and their latest recruits into the world of mechanical and electrical engineering.
With thanks to the City of Liverpool College and Agent Marketing for their collaboration on this piece.

Shriyamdha Natarajan five minutes with...
Sustainability Consultant
Chester Office
Only joining the team in early 2025, Shrm has already made waves across the business and industry.

How would you describe your job role?
I work in sustainability, focusing on reducing the carbon footprint of buildings and construction materials. It involves constant research, life cycle analysis, and finding carbon and cost savings.
How did you get into the industry?
I started in architecture because I enjoyed the creative side of problem-solving for everyday spaces. The more time I spent on site, the harder it became to ignore the pollution and waste generated by the construction industry. That’s what pushed me towards sustainability in buildings.
What is your favourite part of your job & why?
My favourite part of the job is realising that sustainability isn’t a solo journey. Watching teams move from resistance to awareness, and then genuine willingness to try sustainable materials, is what keeps the spark alive.
What do you enjoy most about working at DP?
DP feels like an ant colony. Everyone is skilled and knows what they’re responsible for, so there’s no constant pressure or micromanaging. People just get on with their work, but still come together when needed. Sometimes it’s quiet, sometimes there’s a laugh, but it always feels like a team.
If you were not an Sustainability Consultant, what would you be?
I would have probably done something in agriculture.
What are your interests outside of work?
I enjoy playing games, quizzes, and hosting tournaments with my friends. Most of my active time goes into badminton, cycling, or travelling. Outside work, I’m still very much a kid.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Live a little more. Stop overthinking everything.
“Director Commendation
Shriyamdha joined Davies Partnership in 2025 to help develop our Whole Life Carbon Modelling service. With a strong academic background in architecture and sustainability – and several years’ experience practising as an Architect – she was a natural fit for the role. Our leadership team saw her architectural and structural insight as particularly valuable, given these elements typically account for around 75% of a building’s embodied carbon footprint.
Shriyamdha has a rare ability to work seamlessly with architects and structural engineers, bringing a genuine understanding of design challenges alongside a clear eye for realistic opportunities to decarbonise buildings. She moved from India to the UK to complete her Master’s in Architectural Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh, driven by a desire to make a real impact. Sustainability wasn’t something she could fully pursue back home – and she was determined to follow her calling.
For Shriyamdha, sustainability isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life. Whether it’s turning recycled glass bottles into flower vases on her desk, choosing sustainable transport, keeping on top of the latest thinking in low-carbon design, or seeking out local manufacturers for the next project, she lives and breathes the subject. She never preaches to clients, but instead highlights opportunities, points to the green path forward, and understands the commercial and buildability pressures that can shape decisions. Every low-carbon win, big or small, genuinely makes her day.
In the office, Shriyamdha is a breath of fresh air – always smiling, unfailingly polite, kind and thoughtful, with a great sense of humour. You’d never guess she’s a big heavy-metal fan, happily heading off to a Wembley gig and staying in a local hostel without a second thought.
We knew there was something special about Shriyamdha from the start. During her interview, we invited her to present to the entire board – not something we usually do – and she completely blew everyone away. She’s continued to impress ever since and is now also developing our Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) service, helping manufacturers create ‘carbon passports’ for their products.
We’re delighted she chose Davies Partnership and have no doubt she has an amazing future ahead.

Filming
In 2025, we partnered with Rob Ball and RB Films to create a series of video content for our website, launching with a powerful new Branding Film.
Our brief to Rob was simple - to produce a short video that captures the culture, energy, and uniqueness of our business. Over four days, Jessica and Rob travelled across the North West, visiting offices and live project sites, immersing themselves in our teams and the communities we work within to authentically capture what makes working at Davies Partnership unique. As the first in a new programme of content creation, the branding film sets a strong benchmark for the future and reinforces our commitment to people, place, and purpose.
The whole team was absolutely delighted with the outcome, and agreed that the video perfectly captures what makes Davies Partnership special.

editors experience
“I feel very lucky to enter 2026 with Davies Partnership as we mark 30 years in business. In a landscape where long-term survival is rare, to say that we are still here, still growing, still learning and still succeeding is true testament to our talented team.
I didn’t have the pleasure of working with founder Phil, but as he remains a familiar friend to the business, we have crossed paths on many occasions, particularly on the golf course (watching him master his new remote controlled golf bag is now a core memory). We, as a team, are clear that although qualifications and experience are important, personality, drive and kindness matter just as much. Phil instilled this mantra from day one, hiring Electricians and Quality Auditors who flourished into Directors - Directors who then take a chance on textile designers. Actually, I wouldn’t even call it taking a chance; I think these are calculated, thoughtful decisions that look beyond the facade and into individual character. The business succeeds because it sees potential in people beyond credentials.
So, what does 2026 mean? For me, it’s the start of a new decade rife with opportunity and excitement. We already have an incredible team and look ahead with anticipation to new starters and new apprentices! Our first work experience placements are confirmed and, as members of the Save Construction Initiative in North Wales, our expansion and development into the region has never looked more promising. We are proud to adapt with the evolving construction landscape, and in 2026 we will launch new services dedicated to Whole Life Carbon and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) mapping.
Two huge achievements for me in 2025 were our Branding Film and Best Companies Accreditation.
Our film is the most wonderful visual representation of our culture, and as we make plans for the next in a series, I find myself re-watching it almost daily. What’s particularly incredible — and gives huge credit to Rob Ball and RB Films — is how he captured the essence of who we are after knowing us for such a short time.
Best Companies – this was a big one. What makes it so special is that it’s based entirely on anonymous team feedback. I would encourage every business to take part, the insights are invaluable for understanding how your people truly feel about the business. Preparing for it taught me so much about our own organisation, and gave us a clear roadmap for growth and improvement. We’re going for that 2 star in 2026!
Ultimately, it’s the people - past and present - who have made this journey, my journey, meaningful and the bottom line is, it’s a great place to work.
If the last 30 years were about building something that lasts, the next decade is about building something that leads.
