A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

ANTIONETTE KERR

Included in this edition you will find a directory of the employers at the Give Work A Chance Job Fair, profiles on selected companies, and numerous tips on how to secure employment

We hope you subscribe to davidsonlocal.com to receive more tips and info to grow your career forward

North Carolina has experienced growth in in the job market.

We are also seeing more protection for workers requiring accommodations for pregnancy and disabilities.

More companies will be coming, so it is very important that we work to grow our workforce and calibrate our aspirations of our youth to the needs of our employers

The majority of our skilled trade workers are retiring so we must all remember: “The society that scorns excellence in plumbing,

because plumbing is a humble activity, tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because philosophy is an exalted activity Will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy because neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.” Stated by John Gardner, Former Secretary HEW, we need to remember that message today to GIVE WORK A CHANCE so that our economy rebounds and we enable more to rise out of poverty

We need more employers to invest in training, and grow their staff and schools need to produce more talent, students need to commit to in-demand career options, and we need more athletes to become techletes to win the jobs of the future and grow North Carolina’s economy

Thank you all for your continued support and help please GIVE WORK A CHANCE!

What Working Parents In North Carolina Need To Know

Everyone knows that being a working parent is hard. But not everyone knows that are some policies that can help. Let’s change that right now, shall we?

Here are four rights that every working parent in North Carolina is entitled to:

1. Family and Medical Leave

Unlike several other countries, the United States doesn’t guarantee paid family and medical leave for employees. But, employees – at least, those who have worked at a company that employs 50 employees within a 75-mile radius for at least a year and for a total of at least 1,250 hours to the Family Medical Leave Act – employees are legally entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per 12-month period to care for a newborn, adopted, or foster child, to care for a family member, or to deal with a serious medical condition. Legally, employers cannot retaliate against employees who take advantage of this leave, and employees who use FMLA time have the right to return to the same or an equivalent position.

2. School Involvement

In North Carolina, your employer is required by state law to allow you to take up to four hours of unpaid leave per year for the purpose of being involved with your child’s school

3 ADA accommodations

The Americans with Disabilities Act, or the ADA, is known for protecting people with disabilities from acts of discrimination. But did you know that the ADA gives parents the right to accommodations at work that allow them to care for their children with disabilities?

Beyond this, working parents often don’t realize the full extent to which they may be able to benefit from the ADA. The ADA can be a safety net for when unexpected circumstances arise The ADA entitles workers to government assistance when a disability, including longCovid or extreme mental illness, makes it too difficult to work. Parenting makes life a bit less predictable, and you may not always be able to work. It’s important to know that there are resources to help when times are tough.

4. Pregnancy and Nursing Accommodations

The Fair Labor Standards Act entitles employees to reasonable break time to nurse or pump Under the Pump Act, this break time must be paid and employers must provide it for up to two years.

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which only went into effect this summer, entitles pregnant and postpartum employees to reasonable accommodations to help them perform their duties. Employees can request accommodations like extra breaks, a flexible work schedule, less time standing up, and supportive equipment

Now that you know about your rights, you can use them! But remember: Your employer may not be up to date on what they are legally required to provide to their employees.

In the event that your employer gives you a hard time about requests for leave or accommodations that you are legally entitled to, it is likely best to document everything, just in case While conflicts like this can often be worked out, it can be helpful to have a paper trail.

Retaliation or discrimination against employees for using the leave or requesting accommodations is illegal, and employees have the right to challenge employers who do not provide the leave and accommodations workers are entitled to.

ADVICE FOR STUDENT JOB SEEKERS ADVICE FOR STUDENT JOB SEEKERS ADVICE FOR STUDENT JOB SEEKERS

Never before has it been so easy to find a job. However, getting a job may not be easy for those not prepared or connected.

Below are some tips to consider for those hoping to secure employment in the future: With so many advanced manufacturing jobs coming to North Carolina, more students need to realize it's OK not to play in the NFL, NBA, or be a You Tube star They can be a part of te manufacturing job boom underway in the Common Core region of North Carolina, reside at home and commute to thousands of new and current jobs

Are you familiar with the term vacuum jobs?

Once Toyota EV starts hiring their anticipated 5000 employees, Boom Supersonic starts hiring the anticipated 1600, NUCOR Steel starts hiring the anticipated 200 workers, Vinfast, an auto parts suppliers in Sanford/ Pittsboro area of Chatham County, starts hiring the anticipated 15,000, Eli Lilly starts hiring the 600 anticipated new workers, all of these new jobs are going to cause a vacuum by absorbing workers from our current NC employers This has the potential to destabilize our region and perhaps cause the departure or closure for existing companies. We need more advanced manufacturing workers to meet these needs.

For those in high school, enroll into the classes at local Community Colleges. As the result of a state law passed under former Governor Pat McCrory, students can take classes at the community college for free while in high school

I encourage all high school students to take as many CTE courses and start getting your 10 or 30 hour certification cards from OSHA Apprenticeship programs need to be expanded so more under served students may be admitted.

More students should become interested in finding out what employers need for them to learn and not just take classes that are of their current interest but have limited jobs available upon completion of their education.

GIVE WORK A CHANCE SPOTLIGHT: NKOSI BARNES

With our education system often limited in their abilities, there are a lot of opportunities for the community to step in to help uplift our youth and prepare them for the workforce

At the next sporting event you attend, please try conducting this survey Casually approach a group of students and ask them what they want to do with their life?

The vast majority will look off into the horizon and squint their eyes as if they are looking into a future fog

This is your chance to help provide options to clarify the haze and their confusion

By assisting a young adult, you not only help them but also pay forward the kindness others showed you growing up

Recently, Davidson Local staffer, Joel Leonard, conducted an interview with fellow Lexington Senior High School alum, Nkosi Barnes

The two discussed jobs, his plans for the future and Barnes grandfather, the late Juan “Churb” Small, who was classmates with Leonard

Regarding his initial introduction to Leonard, Barnes said “I met Job Coach Joel at a LSHS football game He asked me what my future plans were and I told him I was interested in welding

That made him excited because he knew there were lots of livable wage jobs available in the area Joel told me he graduated Class of ‘82 at LSHS and I asked him if he knew my grandfather I had no idea how important he was to Joel ” Leonard shared “I miss Churb (who passed in September 2022)

He was a peacemaker in middle and high school and made me feel appreciated and respected I felt I had to help his grandson advance his career forward ”

“Originally, Joel set up an interview with The Bradley Group and I was sent to Vitacost the next day,” recalled Barnes “I worked in the outbound warehouse and picked up groceries for placement onto carts to be loaded to conveyor belts, packed and shipped out to area homes

Leonard asked Barnes, “What did you like about the job?” Barnes replied, “I liked working 10 hour shifts and even got overtime pay some weeks ” Barnes was also prompted about his experience working with The Bradley Group as his liaison “I really liked working with The Bradley Group once they set up the jobs They also were accessible to answer any questions once my assignment was over at Vitacost ”

Since their initial meeting, Leonard has arranged multiple job offers for the grandson of his classmate Barnes noted Leonard has “helped me get an edge over others by guiding me to better paying jobs He advised me to show up, take notes, follow company guidelines and whenever I need additional advice, don't hesitate to call ”

Leonard later discovered that Nkosi found a new vocation and is loving life!

To pay tribute to his grandfather’s love of grilling, Barnes now serves as a cook at the internationally renown Lexington Barbecue aka “The Monk ” At the restaurant, he will be building his culinary skills as he learns from professionals Barnes is beyond excited as he’s earned enough to buy a car and is enjoying contributing to his new business family

Lexington Barbecue owner, Rick Monk stated “Sometimes having someone who believes in you is the difference between winning and losing! Nkosi is a great young man and we are proud to have him on our team Nkosi is getting all of the ingredients needed to grow his future with us!”

From Leonard: Don't we all need to help our youth get past their future fog by by believing in and opening doors for them? Who can you help get a job? For our community to progress, we more need to pitch in and ‘Give Work A Chance’ to help give more workforce angels their wings (in Nkosi's case wheels) so more can prosper Miss you Churb! Nkosi is working hard to make you proud!

TRANSITIONING ATHLETES TO TECHLETES

It disappoints me to see all of those dreamers on American Idol say I sing because it's my passion and they will never make what they could make in advanced manufacturing careers nor the social impact

Pop culture doesn't celebrate these critical manufacturing job our society depends on. Passion is not what you get out but what you put in

Younger generations need to realize they have not been properly trained or exposed to what they can become while in school.

We have to start mentoring more about the real prosperous options than what they see on TV or celebrated on the news.

For your own benefit, take classes that teach skills that are in high demand with high earning potential, like machining, welding, electrical, plumbing, and programmable logic controllers.

Please don't be intimidated by them because you don't understand or don’t have friends taking these courses now.

Employers are so desperate to hire talent that they are raiding these classes and hiring students before they even finish More athletes need to become techletes.

This concept was inspired from a conversation I had with former Lexington Senior High School Athletic Director, Ronnie Beverly.

He was frustrated at seeing cycles of poverty perpetuated by generations of star athlete who are so singularly focused on athletics they never developed other skills that would enable them to take on lucrative jobs in the future.

They get stuck in menial work and later teach their children about athletics; omitting job skills

.

After that deep conversation with Beverly, I suggested coaches need to not only prepare students to compete in athletics but also build bridges to other viable career options

Teach in practice if they can read a playbook, they can also read electrical schematics, blueprints and encourage them to work in area manufacturers

Set up tours of area businesses

Host employers to speak at practice and to discuss the skills they are building in athletics directly translate to their success in advanced manufacturing

Sadly, most athletes will never be compensated for all of the sweat and effort they put into high school athletics and most feel lost after their playing days are over

We need to make sure better pathways are created to turn athletes into techletes so more rise out of poverty

For even those out of school, enroll in Davidson-Davie Community College, Guilford Technical Community College, Forsyth Tech, Randolph Community College or any of the other commutable community colleges

Being in the class not only gives you the credentials needed to get hired in upwardly mobile jobs but can connect you to decision makers and influences that can get you into life changing careers

Fairystone Fabrics is retaining the pride of what it means to be “Made In the USA” by being one of North Carolina’s leading Textile Manufacturers Recognized for 55 years of excellence and innovation, they produce technical fabrics for automotive, filtration and niche markets at their location in Burlington, North Carolina Their vision is to develop the next generation of employees in the Textile Industry through education and inspiration

Fairystone Fabrics specializes in warping, warp knitting and sueding

Warp knitting is defined as a loop-forming process in which the yarn is fed into the knitting zone, parallel to the fabric selvage It forms vertical loops in one course and then moves diagonally to knit the next course. Thus the yarns zigzag from side to side along the length of the fabric Used for commercial knitting fabrics, warp knitting represents the fastest method to produce fabric from yarn

Sueding is a mechanical finishing process in which fabric is rubbed continuously with sandpaper on one or both sides to raise or create a fibrous surface This rubbed surface improves the fabric’s appearance and gives the fabric a luxurious, suede-like, textured and look

Fairystone Fabrics originally began as Jersey Fabrics and was founded by World War II Air Force Veteran, Harold Bob The company grew through the decades and became a global shipper of locally produced textiles.

In 2011, Jim Bryant purchased Fairystone Fabrics from the Bobo family, continuing the standard of excellence in North Carolina Textiles

At Fairystone Fabrics they treat each other like family. This has become a motto to all that are employed by Fairystone Fabrics where they constantly strive to also reinvest in their employees and their facility

Recycling and sustainability are of great importance to such a large manufacturer and Fairystone Fabric is fully committed to this standard by reaching the goal of becoming 100% landfill free in 2013 and greatly reducing their carbon footprint All waste from the facility is either reused, recycled or converted to fuel for power plants Making Fairystone Fabrics one of the only companies in the area with this operational recycling practice.

The Fairystone Fabrics “family” is seeking to employ and retain diversity in individuals and their backgrounds Their goal is to locate hard workers with great ideas, then custom train them to be their best with numerous training and education opportunities available through Fairystone University, partnerships with the Burlington School System and Alamance Community College.

Known for investing in their employees, Fairystone Fabrics also covers a higher than industry standard portion of their worker’s benefits including 401K and Savings Plans, in addition to Medical, Dental, Eye and Life Insurance The practice of wellness is very important to “The Fairystone Family” which has maintained an employee retention level of over 47% for over the last ten years

Core values are also at the top of the list for all at Fairystone Fabrics who are encouraged to be the quality that they produce The mantra of company President Jim Bryant is “Get It Done!” It is exactly that motto that has given Fairystone Fabrics their hold on the Textile Industry and what continues to make them a global competitor
