Vista Gateway
In the undertaking of this new visitor’s center located in Newfields, Indiana, the project conjures imagery that acts as a panoramic window into the key highlights and attractions of the location. It embraces openness, airiness, and natural light with the high ceilings and generous amounts of glazing. Vista Gateway features a large cantilever that mixes modern sleekness with the welcoming warmth of gentle curves, mimicing natural forms and vantage sighlines.

Conceptualized through a bird’s nest, this project aims to take its visitors to the level in which an array of birds fly around in and to mimic their way of life, merging creature, environment, and architectural aesthetic into an overall enchanting space. Its multi-level layout promotes safe flight space for the birds within and around the aviary, all the while maximizing views for the visitors. This also allows for the separation of dedicated employee space and pedestrian space.

The Muncie MFD Seat
In collaboration with Dimensional Innovations and EcoVantage, my team and I were able to pull off the successfuly 3D printed & CNC milled seat designed for downtown Muncie. Serving both functionally and aesthetically, it calls back to a time in Muncie’s history when the city was well known for manufacturing.

Fragmented Objects: A Study
The nature of these somewhat familiar, yet unfamiliar “objects” conveys a message that addresses the observation in our design process. Utilizing 3D scanning, we can capture the essence of existing structures or other objects and let it have the option to either directly or indirectly impact our end design decision. Unlike our human imaginations which can only take in a select amount of info at a given time, scanning can handle large sets of input data and manages the complexity that we as humans often get fixated on. This enables us designers to think more broadly about the scope in question rather than having a narrow-lens limiting our observation down to a singular takeaway, thus we can slowly unpack the nature of a place and things around us. So, with these fragmented objects, scans are extracted, multiplied, and subtracted through each other or through other scans to create something novel yet familiar.

Musei Magna Opera
This museum space is a culmination of both the formal and speculative aspects of design as it addresses its functional purpose yet questions the aesthetic sense of itself as a whole, becoming all the more fulfilling as art is meant to push the boundaries of direct thinking and leave people often wondering in some cases. Conceived through multiple manipulative processes, this art museum takes on an abstract form as its interior space is defined by certain edge conditions from the exterior walls and ceilings. It begins to suggest a defined path until it gets broken off from the peculiar geometry. In terms of materiality, the museum addresses the contextual scale of other neighboring structures as the stone comes from nearby government buildings and the shingles are a callout to the residential side of Philadelphia.

Deserted Habitat
Part of a personal 1-day design challenge, I wanted to explore formally what a small living space would look like in harsh climate conditions. In this instance, the inhabitant is surviving out on their own in the desert, so ensuring rigidity in the design is crucial hence the thick concrete foundation systems and steel exterior. While the materiality suggests one thing, the overall form suggests something “not as serious”. In keeping the form curvilinear, the habitat remains flowing, open, and inviting to the inhabitant or to others who might stumble across it, and the ambience would feel intriguingly primordial yet futuristic.
