T’S H A R D T O B E L I E V E that 30 years have passed since we first started Gasper Landscape Design & Construction. In 1988, I was 30 years old and a father supporting my growing family. We had a young daughter, and my wife, Paula, was expecting our second child, who incidentally celebrated his 30th birthday earlier this year. After my father’s passing, which was several years earlier, I was running my parents’ business, a delicatessen in Northeast Philadelphia. This may have been a time to “play it safe,” but from an early age I had been experimenting with different business ventures and experiencing varying degrees of success, perhaps, watching my father, a self-starting entrepreneur in his own right, gave me the motivation needed to take a leap of courage and faith. I started a new landscape business which would become Gasper Landscape Design & Construction. At Gasper’s we strive to deliver you a great product and excellent service. Through the years I’ve learned that great customer service is the key to a successful business. Every day we strive to improve our customer’s experience in everything we do at Gasper Landscape Design & Construction. We just received some generous feedback from one of our clients about the service they received from the Gasper landscaping team. We would like to share their feedback with you. FARMHOUSE ADDITION
O
LD FARMHOUSES tend to evolve and grow with each generation contributing to the original shell
of the house by adding their own personal improvements or additions. The same is true of the 200+ year old Bucks County farmhouse of John and Paulette R. The initial structure of their home can be traced back to the mid 1700’s around the time of the Revolutionary War. In 1813, as noted on the date on the house gable, the structure of the house was enlarged to the size it is today. Since that time many projects have brought the house up to modern standards. Being previous clients, and being impressed with the work performed when they had Gasper install a paver patio 15 years ago, John and Paulette decided to approach the Gasper team to design and install a new round of improvements to their beloved farmhouse. “I was happy to learn that Gasper had a full carpentry division to tackle my new addition,” remembers John. The project involved renovating and enlarging an existing three-season sunroom to make it usable year-round without losing all the natural light or the outdoor feel. In order to enlarge the building footprint, however, there needed to be some changes to the existing adjacent patio, which included relocating a large hot tub that had been seldom used in recent years. The design for the proposed sun room bumped it out past the rear wall of the house approximately 8 feet creating an opportunity to place a new covered porch on the back of the house. This was just wide enough for chairs along the house and a walkway. “The designer was able to marry the old and the new perfectly. You would never know that the new porch and sunroom is not part of the original farmhouse structure”, praises homeowner Paulette.

FARMHOUSE ADDITION The new sunroom is warm and inviting. The openness of the new larger windows and doors bring the feeling of the outside garden in, but is usable year round. Deep seated wicker furnishings (provided by Gasper Outdoor Furniture) contribute to the garden feel of the room and are as comfortable as your current living room set.

The extension of the sunroom created the perfect area for a new covered porch. It is hard to image the back of this old farmhouse without it. Seasonal arrangements of mums, ornamental cabbages, and pumpkins surround the back door entrance.
The design of the new sunroom was not without its challenges however, such as dealing with an old basement Bilco door right in the vicinity of the new construction and the complexity of connecting the old roof lines into the new porch. Gasper Designer Nick Lupinacci was able to bring creative and practical solutions to each challenge. A trap door, constructed out of Ipe (Brazilian walnut), was built into the new porch floor to cover the Bilco door, and the 3-D model was used to help review and confirm the roof design as well as to show the homeowners exactly what to expect from the new construction. 6

Upgrades to the interior of the sunroom included replacing the old exposed beam and painted plywood ceiling with a prefinished wood ceiling (synergywood.com) and new energy efficient windows and doors (trimlinewindows.com). Furniture made out of reclaimed barn wood, old-fashioned hanging Edison-style decorative bulbs and wide-plank wood floors not only feel period appropriate but are warm and inviting. Practical details on the sunroom and porch such as wrapping all exposed wood with weather and rot resistant PVC are balanced with whimsical details such as replacing the traditional downspouts with copper rain chains.
“This is my new favorite room,” states Paulette, “I love to sit in this room and overlook the lushness of the yard. It is always a place of retreat from the hectic nature of my day.” The homeowners have been thrilled with the end result and happy with their decision to come back to Gasper for another project. John states, “We have had two great experiences working with Gasper’s designers and crews. I would not trust anyone but Gasper to work on my house!” The team at Gasper Design & Construction are proud to be part of the evolution of this historic structure and look forward to what John and Paulette might want to add next!
BEFORE: The old sunroom had exposed beams and painted plywood ceiling and had been used for storage. The old wall of windows has been replaced with large sliding glass doors to allow a better connection to the patio and other outdoor spaces. A small seating area and fire table overlooks the yard in its full autumn regalia. Consider replacing a stuffy formal dining table with a beautifully detailed cast fire table and comfortable deep seating. A fire tables combines the warm draw of a fire with a place to set down a drink or a plate of food.
Upgrade your traditional porch swing to a swing bed! Filled with quick wicking outdoor pillows and cushions, this swing bed makes the perfect location for an afternoon cat nap. A grape covered pergola covers the entrance to the old root cellar. Large Boston ferns, unusual bird houses and feeders, and fun Edison-style lanterns hang from the pergola giving the patio a fun, eclectic focal point.

ANY OF THE HOMEOWNERS that contact us are in the same situation that homeowner’s
Chris and Stephanie found themselves in when they first called Gasper Landscape Design & Construction. When they first moved into their home, they had initially focused on interior renovations of their house. Now, a few years later and with all the interior work complete, they were finally ready to focus on the exterior renovations that had been put on the backburner. Living in their house for a few years, however, gave them time to figure out exactly how they used their outdoor space and what the issues were with their existing patio. It also gave them time to dream big on items like a built-in fire pit and an outdoor cooking station. Having spent time collecting a lot of examples of outdoor spaces she admired, Stephanie was able to clearly share her likes and dislikes with Gasper Sales Designer, Erik Freeman, during their initial meeting. So much so, that when they met with Erik again for the conceptual design presentation, it was clear that not only were the designers at Gasper listening, but that they had brought a lot more good ideas to the design process.. In fact, the things that stuck out to Chris and Stephanie between Gasper and some of the other companies they had interviewed, was the comfort level they had developed with the professionalism and preparedness of Erik and the level of thought and thoroughness that Gasper had put into the presentation of the proposed design. “Erik

A large market umbrella can be incorporated into cook stations or bars to provide shade for both the grill master and his/her guests. A two tiered cast stone fountain (right) adds some formality to this free-formed bluestone patio. Water falls randomly over the faces of protruding natural stone shelves, creating much sound and interest. The gray and brown color in this masonry stone water wall combines well with almost all house and pavement colors.

Fall vegetables such as beets, carrots, green onions, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and kohlrabi can handle light frost, which actually makes them sweeter. Autumn’s mild temperatures create perfect growing conditions for fall vegetables like kale and carrots. The tips below will help you extend your vegetable season long beyond the heat of summer. Get a speedy harvest with quick crops such as arugula, mustard, spinach, turnips, and crispy red radishes which are ready to harvest in little more than a month. Asian greens, such as pak choi or mizuna, grow so fast that you will have plenty of plants to add to stir-fries and soups in just a few weeks after planting. The hardiest fall vegetables—spinach and kale—often grow well into early winter. Thin crowded spinach to give the plants plenty of elbowroom, and stop picking leaves when freezing weather arrives. When protected by a blanket of snow or a plastic tunnel, spinach can survive winter and produce sweet leaves first thing in spring.
