Jewelry designer Jade Trau makes every minute count in a typical work day. Here is what we learned about her creative process, inspiration and influences.
by michelle orman
DDesigner Jade Trau is almost as notable for her seemingly infinite well of passion for her work as she is for her spectacular, diamond-intensive collections. A fifth-generation diamantaire, Jade officially began working for her grandfather when she was 18, learning all aspects of the diamond trade and excelling in the field before launching her eponymous collection in 2012. Over a decade later, Jade continues to showcase a guileless enthusiasm for jewelry design and
fabrication. While the materials with which she works, coupled with the exceptional level of craftsmanship employed in their creation, are the height of sophistication, her unique approach to the creative process results in pieces that are modern, sexy and infinitely wearable. We were thrilled to get an inside look into one of Jade’s “average” days to discover she extends the same passion for her team, her family and her clients as she does for the diamonds that have been mesmerizing her since she was a child.
6:00 AM - HAPPY MONDAY!
This morning I recommitted… again…to my meditation practice. I did 10 minutes and I’m not gonna lie…it was hard this morning. The mind was racing! From there I go downstairs to get a jump start on breakfast and lunch for my teenage twin boys…it’s avocado toast with hard boiled eggs on top today. I get big compliments from my boys for the eggs being perfectly jammy (the trick is 3 minutes and 15 seconds from the second you see the first rolling boil).
7:30 AM – ME TIME
Kids get to the bus at 7:30. I drink lemon water while I do the short order chef breakfast and lunch service and wait till they are off to have my coffee. For years I was doing a pour over but I recently bought a Nespresso and now I have a new coffee routine that I’m enjoying immensely. Foamy milk and lots of cinnamon on top. I also just returned from Kuwait, and we are still working through all the
delicious cardamom filled treats, so I sneak a little sweet bite to have with it. I drink my coffee while finishing my morning to-do list that I have to start on Sunday night or else I get a bad case of the Sunday scaries.
9:00 AM - OFF TO WORK
The last thing I do before I head off to the studio is put my jewelry on. It’s almost like another round of meditation in the morning because I need to be present and focused to get everything on. I have a bit of a jewelry uniform except for my earrings which I change more frequently. Otherwise, I don’t switch things out as much as I just keep adding on. I know it seems a little insane to take it off and put it on every day, but it’s the only way I know.
10:00 AM - START THE WORK DAY
I finally got to our NYC studio…after a little fender bender. Let’s just
say driving is not my greatest skill. Monday is my favorite day. It sets the tone for the rest of the week. We have our Monday morning team meeting so everyone’s in the know on what’s on the agenda for the week! We’re getting ready to move to a new showroom, so lots of dynamic conversations.
11:00 AM – CONNECTING WITH CLIENTS & RETAILERS
After our team morning meeting, I make some space to check my email and respond to some clients and my retailers. The community that we’ve created here is something that I really appreciate…I mean Jade Trau wouldn’t be here without them. So even when I’m really busy in the office internally, I make time to connect.
1:00PM - COUTURE MEETING
Quick phone call with Geneva to chat about all things ‘COUTURE Salon’ since it’s coming up in early spring and truly right around the corner now! While we really loved the homey feeling of our booth last year, you can always tweak things and make it a little better
1:30 PM - ON “THE STREET”
After spending the morning in the studio, I head over to our NYC workshop. It’s about a 15-minute walk from our office and it’s nice to be able to get some fresh air during the day. The shop is on 47th
Street…the street that’s probably the closest thing to the “block I grew up on.”
When I get there, we usually drink more coffee and then start to work through whatever designs and projects are hitting a roadblock and need some problem-solving. It’s a super-collaborative process. We also leave some room for chitchat.
3:00PM - DIAMOND SHOPPING
The problem with the days I go to the street is that time passes way too quickly! I usually stop in at least one diamond supplier’s office before heading back to the studio. Diamond-buying is still my happy place. On my way back to the studio, I always cut through Saks just to feel the energy of happy shoppers. I REALLY love shopping…but Monday is not the day for that!
4:30PM - LAST LICKS
I work from home on Tuesdays so when I get back to the studio I use the time wisely to make sure everyone on my team gets some actual ‘face’ time. All of a sudden, it feels like a mad dash to get everything done. I also spend some time working on the trunk for the show I’ll be doing later this week in Arizona
7;00PM - DINNER
Tonight I came home committed to a Peloton ride but the growing teens were hungry and I came home later than expected, so I went straight to dinner that I almost always cook with my kids while hearing every last detail about their day. We always eat together and talk, but we make a TV dinner exception these days to watch the Knicks games. I discovered the joy of being a sports lover this year…

Grey on grey and or grey on black are fashion news, especially for men. The color might be just in the bracelet or band, or just on the face, or both.
Watchmakers such as Hamilton have turned to neutral colorways for 2026. From khaki straps to beige dials, these pieces are both understated and dynamic.
Throughout the world of luxury timepieces, the top designers and manufacturers are developing or reintroducing lines that highlight what they do best.
You can see it in the use of Roman numerals and the new popularity of smaller 36-40 mm sizes. Relaunched classic racing collections with multiple complications are inspired by a passion for vinage cars and rally racing. Iconic models that have exuded elegance and understatement for decades never go out of style.
With our classic watches, you will definitely be up to date in 2026.
Who says your wedding band has to match your engagement ring?
WOr that couples must wear similar bands? Or that you even have to limit yourself to one band? Today there are so many ways to express your undying love that the simple gold band has come a long way. While it all starts with the engagement ring, a perfect union isn't required when pairing it with a wedding band, says Amanda Gizzi, a trend watcher for Jewelers of America. You can think outside the box and try different styles. The key is harmony. The rings should complement one another.

Getting personal and finding “the one” for you Engagement rings as unique and individual as you are.
There has never been a better time to be an engagement ring shopper. There are so many dazzling designs to choose from you are sure to find “the one” that best expresses your uniqueness — in addition to you and your partner’s special love story. To help guide you through a sea of settings we turned to experts who keep watch on wedding jewelry trends, Amanda Gizzi, spokesperson for Jewelers of America and Severine Ferrari, founder of Engagement 101. Here’s what to know to find the ring that is perfect for you.
Solitaires Stand The Test Of Time
The beauty of a round single center stone never grows old — it’s still the leading shape, classic and timeless. And because the shape doesn’t have any sharp angles, it’s less prone to chipping.
To make it more personal: Stack it. Putting a band above and below the solitaire elevates it, especially if your bands incorporate a special meaning about you and your partner, such as birthstones or different size diamonds.
The popular elongated shape is not only flattering to the finger, it too, is chip resistant. The larger surface area makes the stone appear larger, with its facets throwing off a lot of sparkle.
To make it more personal: Set it on its side in a unique and eye-turning stunning east-west setting.
Traditional and timeless, three stone rings with matching diamonds will always be a bride’s favorite.
To make it more personal: Three stone rings don’t always have to feature matching stones. Accents are another way to express uniqueness. Now trending, center stones being flanked by two smaller stones, sometimes diamonds in different shapes or even colored gemstones.
While diamonds still rule when it comes to engagement rings, some brides are opting to incorporate color gemstones into their rings. Sapphires are the most popular and durable stones next to diamonds.
To make it more personal: Choose sapphires in a lighter blue hue. Or if your taste runs to ruby red or emerald green, think of adding them as accent stones since neither is as durable as a diamond or sapphire.
Two-Stone Rings Are Gaining In popularity
The toi et moi setting, symbolizing two lovers sitting side by side, is far from a passing fad. The romantic design with matching stones dates back centuries.
To make it more personal: Choose stones in different shapes or one diamond and one gemstone.
While you can’t go wrong with gold (yellow, pink or white) or platinum, know that platinum is the most durable metal followed by yellow gold. White gold may require some maintenance to keep its sheen. And all four metals are skin friendly.
To make it more personal: Two-tone settings are trending often with a platinum crown to make the stone more secure and appear as sparkly-white as possible.
Brighten the season with pretty gemstone jewelry.
Pa le rose, soft lilac, lemon peel, azure, celadon and the crystalline blue of a winter sky: these enticing colors are the newest palette for jewelry designers, as they create the latest must-haves for customers. And all for good reason.
While emeralds, sapphires and rubies will always be prized, pastel colored stones like amethyst, aquamarine, topaz, peridot and citrine present lighter options. They’re fresh, they’re fun and they’re feminine, fitting right in with the softer silhouettes and lovely flourishes—beading, embroidery, lace and ruffles—popular in fashion now.
Jewelry made with, say, tourmaline and quartz is not as serious as that of precious gemstones; it’s easier to wear all day, every day, not just for big occasions.
The lovely pastel shades are attractive on most skin tones, and they go with most wardrobes, complementing light items and bringing a lift to dark clothing. It’s not just lighter colored semi-precious stones that are enjoying a surge, “We’re seeing
pearls,” said Aja Raden, author of a book on historic jewels, Stoned, and a jewelry designer herself, formerly at Tacori and now doing private commissions.
And, she adds, “there are tons of opals.” Designers are delighted to have a whole new crayon box of colors to play with, letting their imaginations run wild and experimenting with luscious color combinations. And they’re enjoying the challenge of creating pearl jewelry that’s anything but traditional. Said Ms. Raden, “it’s not just pastels. I’m seeing a real resurgence of nature-inspired jewelry: flowers, butterflies, snakes, bugs, even birds,” using lighter colored stones in their creation. It’s all part of a love of nature in the face of an increasingly technical world. There’s more attracting customers to pastels.
The cost for semi-precious stones is less than that for precious gemstones. And as some of these semi-precious stones, such as spinels and tanzanites, themselves start to become rare, it’s a good time to invest in jewelry made of them—and show your colors!
Hamilton introduces their Khaki Field Murph Watch with all-new options.
There are watches that have gained iconic status for their appearances in Hollywood movies. Good examples are the Rolex Submariner (Dr. No) and the Hamilton Ventura (Men in Black). The tradition continued in 2014 when Christopher Nolan’s megahit Interstellar opened. The film producers asked Hamilton to create two prototype watches for the movie. One, a Khaki Field model, was worn by Jessica Chastain, who was playing the character Murph. Using the watch, she communicates in Morse code with Matthew McConaughey’s character across dimensions of time and space in the universe. A legion of Interstellar Murph followers was born. So in 2019, by popular demand, Hamilton launched the 42mm Khaki Automatic Field Murph.
Recently Hamilton has updated things with a new, more wearable 38mm Murph. It’s available in a polished stainless steel bracelet with deployment clasp or a raised leather strap with alligator finish.
The new model sports a highly accurate H-10 caliber Swiss ETA movement with an impressive 80-hour power reserve and an exhibition caseback. The updated dial is simple and easy to read, with SuperLumaNova on the outer numerals and vintage-look cathedral hands.
Pioneering, practical and precise and affordable, Hamilton uses a unique combination of Swiss precision and American spirit to create distinctive, versatile watches for aficionados and style-conscious individuals alike.

A nice off duty look is a gold chain with a few personal pendants. The key to not coming off like Mr. T is getting the proportions right, like a slim metal chain with delicate links.
Men should give wearing jewelry a try. If you already wear a watch, you’re on your way. But there’s more to accessorizing. Here are a few go to pieces.
If you’re new to bracelets, try on a few and see how it feels—and have fun.
Replace your dress watch on weekends with one with a little more braun and cool, with a rubber or cloth strap that can handle more rough-and-tumble weekend activities.
A classic signet ring takes on a modern vibe. Up your style with a splash of diamonds.
