The thick house explores the possibilities of the surface dome’s geometry and imagines what it could be as a building structure, while trying to the questions of use, space, mass and context.

[above] early ideation sketches for the pavilion. [left] massing models and explorations of the choice mass to develop the pavilion’s design. The Miller House (1957) by Eero Saarinen exemplifies Mid-Century Modernism, blending open planning, structural clarity, and seamless indooroutdoor integration. Collaborating with Alexander Girard on the interior design and Dan Kiley on the landscaping, Saarinen crafted an enduring architectural masterpiece of elegance and innovation, but showing intentionality and careful consideration for all aspects of the projects. The design of this pavilion hence sought to preserve the ideals and thought processes of the Miller House design while proposing it’s own originality, particularly in it’s gridded layour and apparent rules of three (3).

[above] A study of Jennifer Bonner’s Haus Gables. A CLT roof typology house exploration precedent that inspired the form of the thin house. The Thin House is a project that pushes the ideals of what a house should be. Set in an alley or one of two alleys amongst 3 houses, the thin house challenges the designer to look beyond current ideals of current housing designs and program spaces that would be otherwise overlooked. The approach taken to solving most of the posed questions was making use of the two alleys, the resulting structure latching on the middle structure in commensally using the flanking structures as support.
