Invisible Value

In order to democratise the information, it is important for the work to be displayed in a slightly unconventional manner. The image of an easel came to mind, as rather than a finished piece of work being displayed on a wall, easels are suggestive of a work in progress, and might make the drawings more accessible to viewers.

Below the main drawings, shelves will be included to hold additional drawings, booklets, and other pieces of printed media, all of which can be picked up and interacted with by the viewer. The three easels can be arranged in a variety of permutations, depending on the spatial limitations of the exhibition. The design is intended to be simple, with three legs (made from 35mm x 50mm timber lengths) acting as a tripod. The two front legs will contain a shelf, on which a mounting board for A1 drawings can sit.

The shelf is deep enough for an A5 sheet, so as to fit the format of my additional booklets and drawings. The back leg, and the shelf both fold inwards using piano hinges.

This is for ease of storage, travel, and setting up.

Firstly, the six front legs were cut to the correct length.

They were then cut at 10° so that when joined together, they would form 20° (an 80° slope from the ground).

They were then joined together, and the first horizontal support was added to strengthen that connection. This was screwed in from the outside. Later, the third (back leg) will be hinged from this support.

The second horizontal support was added. Pocket holes were drilled to allow them to be screwed into place. This support will be used to hinge the shelf from.

The back leg gets wider towards were it will be hinged.

This will improve the overall stability of the easels. The timbers used for triangulation are also at 10°.

Piano hinges are prepared for joining the back legs to the front legs. Piano hinges come in long lengths, and can be cut to the desired dimensions using a hack saw.

Additional holes were drilled to accommodate more fixings.

The back leg is screwed on through the hinges. The widened top (mentioned earlier) forms an inverse of the empty space between the two front legs. The pilot holes drilled earlier for the first horizontal support are left visible.

Dowels are added to the base of each leg. This is to elevate the legs enough off the ground so that edges and corners will be protected.

The shelves are made from plywood. and sit into a notch cut into a 35x50mm length. This is to strengthen the connection at the hinge. The connection side is angled at 80°, to counteract the tilt of the legs, and ensure that the shelf will sit level.

The backing boards are cut to size out of 4mm plywood.

The boarder is set out using masking tape, and they are painted white.
