At the start of the pandemic the government of Togo launched NOVISSI, a digital mass payment platform that utilized mobile money. Via this platform, beneficiaries could receive payments quickly without being connected to the internet, which resulted in the speedy distribution of $34 million of aid to 25% of Togo’s adult population.
The UK government will send £15.5 million to the Humanitarian (M4H) Innovation Programme in 2023 via GSMA Mobile, demonstrating how mobile money can facilitate the easier giving of foreign aid. These funds will go towards helping the over 17 million people facing humanitarian disasters such as hunger and displacement. To date, this program has already assisted more than 8 million people through the provision of disaster recovery services.
