Dear Members, Happy New Year!

Planned upgrades Due to deterioration, the Club is improving the Boundary Café’s Fan Coil Unit and the Kitchen’s Primary Air-handling Unit in February before the hot weather is upon us.

The Club has upgraded the Grounds facilities, including Petanque Court and is going to upgrade the Lower Lawn Bowls Green from end of March to early July 2020.

We are in the process of purchasing a pizza oven. Hopefully, it will be ready to serve the Members by April 2020.

Club finances Financially, the Club is very much on target of 2019/2020 Budget.

Additional updates from the AGM The GC have co-opted Melvin Wong as Secretary and Harry Yuen as Treasurer. I would like to thank them for stepping up to assist the Club until the next AGM. The 2019 AGM Minutes have been posted on the KCC website under the Membership section. We will be conducting a survey regarding Race Box Utilisation in the next quarter.

Thank you and farewells I would like to thank our General Manager, Mr Nigel Stearns, Grounds Manager, Mr Jason Chan and Membership Supervisor, Ms Mandy Poon for their efforts and contributions to the Club.

Dear Members, Welcome to you all to this ‘Spring Issue’ of the WOK Magazine covering the months of February, March and April AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR. In opening this set of messages and with the Year of 2019 behind us we look forward to the challenges that 2020 will undoubtedly have in store for us all ands little did I think in 2019 when writing of challenges did I foresee quite what those challenges were.

That we as a Club, a Membership and the Staff have managed and achieved despite the turmoil evidences the strength of character required to sustain and flourish despite the many misfortunes heaped upon our community. The opportunity afforded in writing this column offers me the chance to express my and the Staffs’ sincere thanks, gratitude and appreciation to the Membership for your continued support, patronage and goodwill of the past twelve months and especially over the Christmas and New Year period. We very much look forward to continue to serving you to the very best of our ability in the Year to come.

With the Festive Season and New Year Celebrations confined to history, we now look forward to celebrating a second New Year in Hong Kong this time in the form of the Chinese New Year - ‘The Year of the Rat.’ Preparations are in hand within the Sub-committees for ongoing improvements and critical reviews to existing service standards across the Club’s diverse operations, and in similar vein, the Club Management ‘Team’ has commenced in-depth appraisals and analysis of KCC’s annual ‘Events and Entertainments Programmes’ with the view to improving upon established traditions whilst at the same time moving forward to implement change to meet Membership expectations. Club Management readily admits that there are always areas in which we are able to improve and you can be assured that we shall continue to strive towards this aim despite substantive changes within the Management Team.

With improvements in mind the Club’s Main Kitchen and the Boundary Café in the months of February into early March in order to effect major repairs, replacement and essential other maintenance works or risk consequential and catastrophic failures of the Club’s air-cooling systems in the summer months ahead. In the foregoing regard the Kitchen will be ‘Closed’ for a period of 10 days from 3rd. to 13th. February and the Boundary Café from 3rtd. February to 1 st. March during which time extensive works requiring the dismantling of the false ceiling; the replacement of new thermal insulation to the piping and air ducts; the replacement of all fan coil units and a subsequent rebuilding of the ceiling will have to be undertaken.

The Boundary Café entrance flooring as well as the addition of a pizza oven to the Kitchen will also be provisioned during the period.

Food and Beverage services, however, will be maintained during the ten day period of the Kitchen’s closure through the setting up of a ‘temporary outdoor kitchen facility’ at the Pavilion, albeit with a much reduced menu.

I occasionally use this article to highlight Management and/ or Committee concerns regarding the KCC and I would like to inform Members that Management is presently undertaking a review of Members breaching the Club’s Car Park Bye-laws.

In this regard Members in possession of Car Park labels are reminded that in accordance with Bye-Law 22.1 (a) (Car Park – July 2018 NOTICE refers) - “Parking labels which allow Members and Subscribers to park their motor vehicle in Car Park provided that the Member or Subscriber is within the Club premises when the vehicle is parked.”

Members who park their vehicle in the Car park and then leave the Club premises are in breach of both the ‘spirit’ as well as the letter of Bye-law 22.1 (a) and may be subject, under the provisions of the Bye-laws, to either “have their account debited with a charge, may have their Permit withdrawn for a period or may face disciplinary action, as decided by the General Committee.”

A number of events/activities that I would like to make you aware of are, first of all our Annual Chinese New Year Celebratory Lion Dance Luncheon Buffet that will take place in the Clubhouse Building and Boundary Café from 12:00 p.m./ Noon on Saturday, 1st. February. The Valentine’s Day Special Set Menu Dinner in the Grill Room on Friday, 14th. February. This event was sold out last three years so if you are planning on taking your nearest and dearest out for dinner please book early!

Please also note that the Staff Annual Dinner and Awards will be held on Monday, 3rd. February. The Club will close at 4:00 p.m. that day so please mark your calendars accordingly.

The annual Kowloon Cricket Club Centenary Cup Horse Race at Shatin will be held on Sunday, 8th. March. Please contact Teresa our Food and Beverage Coordinator at teresa@kcc.org.hk to book your table. Don’t forget, guests are welcome.

KCC Junior Program

The 2019-20 KCC Junior Cricket Program

We have now reached the half way point of the 2019-20 KCC Junior Cricket Program and things have gone from strength to strength.

Our U15 Typhoons were victorious in the U15 Premier League T20 competition in November 2019 cruising to a comfortable victory over the CHK Women’s team to claim KCC’s first trophy of the season. Skipper Jayden Botfield has led the side brilliantly and has already established himself as one of the up and coming stars, averaging over 30 in Saturday men’s Cricket at the age of 14.

Our U13 Crusaders are currently sitting second on the table and are pushing hard to cement top spot prior to the commencement of finals in February 2020.

Outstanding performances from Samad Khan with the bat including a highest score of 103* and he currently has 321 runs at an average of 52.5 which is nearly 200 runs more than the next highest.

Our U11 teams have been improving week on week and the demand for games is so high we’ve entered an additional team into the competition after Christmas.

Our female participation has grown from 6 in 201819 to 18 in 2019-20 and we’re proud to report our total numbers have grown from 135 last season to 175.

All of the above is due to the fun, informational and inclusive program Head Coach Richie Waite and his team have put together.

It’s been an exciting start to the 2019-20 season for the KCC Senior Teams with the KCC Maidens women’s team already saluting in the T10 competition. They currently sit top of the table in the T20 competition which recommences in January 2020 and will look to take both titles out for the first time in recent history.

T h e K C C Ta r t a r s s i t s e c o n d o n t h e S a t u r d a y Championship Division 1 table behind perennial favourites the HKCC Gap Ramblers having only lost 1 match all season. They will play the Gap Ramblers in January 2020 and should they be successful it will set up a race to the finish for the title.

The KCC Templars have started their title defence of the Sunday Elite division 1 competition in style, sitting 2nd on the table behind PACC but with two games in hand. They face off in the first match of 2020 in what will no doubt go a long way towards deciding the eventual champions.

A lot of hard work has gone into this season by all players and I’d like to congratulate each and everyone of them on their dedication to the Kowloon Cricket Club, with hard work comes success.

KCC Corporate 6’s

The 7 th edition of the KCC Corporate 6 ’s w a s h e l d i n N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 0 .

It featured 8 teams from Hong Kong and abroad. Despite some external factors the tournament was a huge success and we look forward to a bigger and better version in 2021.

Fincher Shield Royal Commonwealth 6’s

In 2019 it was KCC’s turn to host the Annual 2-Day Fixture against the Hong Kong Cricket Club. It had been 5 years of dominance by KCC winning each of the matches outright and despite having a weakened team due to the majority of players away on National Duty, KCC went into the match with high hopes.

Royal Commonwelath IThe second edition of the Royal Commonwealth 6’s was hosted by KCC in November 2019 and featured the 6 consulates, Australia, Britain, Pakistan, India, South Africa and New Zealand.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as HKCC batted first and made an imposing 380 in their first innings, KCC fought hard and took it down to the wire but were ultimately dismissed for 280 with around 7 overs remaining in the day.

After dominating last year Pakistan again had too much fire power, ultimately defeating New Zealand in the final. The tournament supported charity partners, Epilepsy and raised over $50k for their cause.

Sunday afternoon was a great event as Captain of Cricket, Mr Matthew Collins hosted dignitaries from both clubs and enjoyed the action on the field.

The season proper for all competitions is in full swing and we look forward to bringing the club regular updated on the team’s progress through our various social media platforms:

KCC Ve t s p l a y e r s S a r d a r a n , S e t h i a n d I q b a l represented Hong Kong in the 5 th Grand Masters Hockey Asian Cup 2019 from 17th to 23rd October, in Donghae, South Korea. Iqbal was also appointed as one of the umpires of the tournament. Congratulations and well done gents!

International Hockey Here comes our Aliya Khan re p re s e nt i n g H o n g K o n g a t t h e J e j u I n te r n a t i o n a l Tournament. The Hong Kong Women's team beat Malaysia by 3-0 on 7 November. Great job and keep going Aliya!

Well done to Andrea Parungao who won the Bronze medal for indoor hockey at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games held in the Philippines from 4 to 10 December, representing the Philippines. Congratulations!

Well Done to Maurice Leung, Cameron McNeil and William Fung who represented Hong Kong U21 at the 2019 Men's Junior AHF Cup in Muscat, Oman.

They were accompanied by Kulwant Dillon (Assistant Coach) and Ravi Sethi (National Umpire).

Mini Hockey KCC has thriving mini hockey (ages 5 - 12) and youth hockey (ages 12 – 16) teams. We have dedicated training sessions with a high level of coaching and regular tournaments.

Our competitive and enthusiastic future stars played well, and our U8 Division 1 mini team finished second place.

Guru Nanak Tournament A KCC team made up primarily of players from the men’s B Team participated in the Guru Nanak Tournament Plate division on 22 December 2019. They came 4th, only losing the last goal at a penalty shootout!

Umpiring Well done to our Ladies A team Captain Moka Mok who represented Hong Kong at the Japan Umpire Exchange Programme at the Kyushu Hockey Tournament in Imari, Saga, Japan. Moka umpired four games in total, including the last match, the winner of which earns the ticket to the All Japanese Hockey Tournament.

Boxing Day Hockey Boxing Day hockey was a terrific success as usual!! Members from mini-hockey, youth, men's and ladies' teams turned up for a fantastic day of social hockey. Players showed their skills and teamwork, and all had good fun.

The finals came down to a draw at full time between Sprite and Milky Way. After an additional 7 minutes of play, Milky Way came out victorious in this year's Boxing Day tournament.

EL CLASSICO. KCC Cavaliers versus KCC Royals Ends As A Modern Day Classic

The highly anticipated Cox’s road derby between the Cavaliers and the Royals took place on the wonderful evening of the 16th of December 2019.

What was expected to be a game of boys against men, was exactly that for the opening half, but with a twist…! The boys proved to be too quick and too sharp for a vintage Royals side and their domination meant a commanding 2-0 lead for the young Cavaliers. But once again, the Royals Manager's Manager of the season David Xmas had a trick up his sleeve. Bringing on Marcel Wagner changed the dynamics of the game and the Royals fought their way to 2-2. The game ended in a pulsating draw which was celebrated shortly after at the Royals Christmas party at the club, to cap off a great evening of football.

Well done to all the players!

Position for KCC: Defender and Midfielder Position for Philippines National Team: Defender National team levels played: Philippines National Team U-19, U-23 and Philippines Men’s National Team Thoughts and aspirations on playing for the KCC: I started playing football at a young age for the Brazilian Soccer Schools(now known as Asia Pacific Soccer School), which is now affiliated with KCC Football Section which handles the youth programs. I’ve grown up within the KCC community, where I had the opportunity to develop my skills and become the player I am today, besides that I’ve made a lot of friends and teammates. Being back with the club after a few years away, has made me realise what I have been missing, the social side of football and playing with a bunch of lads who I could laugh with and enjoy the sport we are all passionate about.

Thoughts and aspirations on playing for the Philippines: I started playing for the National team when I got called up for the Under 19s team in 2015, where I played in the U19 AFC Championship Qualifiers. My first ever international game was against Asian Powerhouses - Japan, I played as a Right-back. Playing for the first time for the National team, I got to witness great talent and given the opportunity to play with and against these players was a blessing in itself. I am proud to represent my country when given the opportunity, wearing the flag across my chest and bringing pride for my country is an amazing feeling I will never forget.

What you like most about playing for the Cavs: I like playing with the Cavaliers, as this team is a mix of senior players who have grown out of the kcc youth system and who are currently in the system, the up-and-coming future footballers. Even with our differences in age group, we all share the same passion and goal. We grow as a group and as footballers collectively, we are a proper team and I personally enjoy most of it whether it is on the pitch or off the pitch with this bunch.

How is the team doing so far this season?

So far, we have a standing of 7 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. We are currently sitting 4th in the table of the Legal League Division 2.

Best KCC Cav memory: Best KCC Cavaliers memory is playing against the KCC Royals, this is the game we look forward to yearly. It being a KCC Derby, that’s just one of the exciting parts of it. Another is playing with and against people who are also representing the KCC name, it unites all of us.

What are your goals with the Cavs this season: My goals with the Cavaliers is to be a good leader to the team, as captain of the team, I want to bring out the best in every player. And of course, to win the Legal League Division 2 and gain promotion to Division 1.

KCC Colts (U13-U18) Update

The various KCC Colts teams have endured a uneven stop-start seasons thus far, owing to the domestic unrest that have resulted in several games being postponed/cancelled. That said, Coaches Chancy, Marc, Glenn, Alex, Wayne and Aron under the oversight of Chris Laiglesia have coped extremely well under the difficult circumstances and have kept their respective teams competitive as we turned corner to 2020. The first weekend of January saw crucial wins by the U13s (vs. Double Flower) and U14s (vs. Eastern) while the U16s battled hard against a tough HKFC squad but came up short. While the U15s match was unfortunately cancelled, these boys are poised to make a strong run being one of the best teams in their division last year when they were U14s. In football, momentum especially at the start of a new year is a very powerful aphrodisiac that can fuel teams to exceed their capabilities – each and every Colts team competes to the lofty standards that the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA), the opposing teams in their respective divisions, the coaches and KCC requires. If the first weekend of 2020 is any indication of what is in store for the rest of the season, then there is certainly a lot to be excited about.

The U13-U16 KCC Colts teams compete at the highest division of the HKFA league system while the U18s play in a tough Division 3. This is worth highlighting and celebrating. Each KCC team has qualified for their divisions and has retained its deserved spot, going toe-to-toe against the youth teams of HK’s top professional clubs . . . this is truly a testament to the immense talent pool that exists within the KCC Youth Football setup and to the coaches that nurture and develop this talent. Please come out and support your Colts teams and please be aware that for a social club, we are extremely competitive and hold our own at these levels.

Boxing Day HKJFL Exhibition Matches 2019 – KCC Has Two MVPs! The sixth edition of the Boxing Day Festival of Football hosted by Hong Kong Football Club was greeted with glorious sunshine and a large and eclectic crowd, comprising supportive parents and football fanatics. This year’s festival saw AIA continuing as title sponsors for a third year.

The Festival has now become a staple fixture in the Hong Kong youth football calendar, particularly with the Hong Kong Junior Football League (HKJFL), whose support in developing the event has greatly enhanced its reputation and popularity within the football community. This year’s Festival included a range of challenge matches over differing ages, from U10 to U16, involving representative teams made up of players from teams participating in the HKJFL and the guest team for the day, Lee Man FC. The Festival format saw knock out competitions in the U10 and U12 age groups, a U14 All Star Game between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and Islands and a U16 Challenge Trophy between HKJFL Select and Lee Man FC, the guest team. Existing HKJFL players were distributed across the various teams, creating a fun, competitive and entertaining atmosphere for all players and spectators.

KCC had two MVPs for the day: Vivaan Heera who played for the U10 HKJFL Cougars and Arjun Sharma who played for the U16 HKJFL Select squad against Lee Man FC. Congratulations Vivaan and Arjun! Continue to do KCC proud!

A Couple Great Nights for the KCC Section!

Race Nights at Happy Valley A group of the football section gentlemen decided to head in to Happy Valley for the Happy Wednesday Race fixtures hosted by the Jockey Club sometime in October. It was a festive time and allowed for the section members to bond with one another. With the addition of the HKFA team, it meant that there was a lot of new blood within the section as the adult teams grew and the evening allowed for section members old and new to get to know one another and forge new relationships that will certainly benefit the on field performances!

Lawn Bowl Social On December 6th the football section hosts its annual Rock N Bowl Christmas Party. This year it is lawn bowl’s turn once again. It was a chilly evening but it did not stop the members from coming down to have some beers and mulled wine with one another.

Shyam again complained about the bill but nevertheless it was a successful evening lifting the moods of all from the situation surrounding us currently and send the section members off to the festive period with a big smile on their faces. Many thanks for the Lawn Bowl Section for allowing us to use the area and their lovely helpers from teaching us about the game! Some might say they have identified some hidden lawn bowl talents amongst us!

The KCC Monarch Kick Off!

After months in the making, the club decided to launch a new team dedicated to the more 'mature' football players. The Monarchs were born in August 2019...although most players saw the sun first in the 60s and 70s...

With most active KCC talented players qualifying for the age group (over 35) already committed in different competitive divisions around Hong Kong, the Monarchs had to reach out to numerous retired players, knowing they would have had aged like some of the best left bank Bordeaux wines... ....and entering their fifth month of existence, the Monarchs have indeed behaved liked a well-aged wine...needing time....time and patience (and not only during the manager's 'excellent' and lengthy pre-game's speeches). Playing in a league facing numerous ex professionals, the team has not always had enough opportunities to develop in-game some of the drills repeated at practice - yet, the momentum is slowly building, and all players are increasingly showing more confidence against high caliber teams.

Other than leading the league in some key statistics - like missing 100 percent of all penalties taken for instance - the Monarchs have also proven that they can progressively compete in the League by leading and having the infamous HK Football against the ropes in their latest game (until a very unfortunate call turning things around) and drawing against well-established neighbours USRC and long standing team BTDT - both teams with players still active in various first divisions.

As the new year will continue to be full of learning lessons for the newly formed team, it will also be paving a strong foundation for seasons to come. Meanwhile, with a few important players coming back from various injuries, 2020 shall not only see the first penalty ever scored by a Monarch, but also undoubtedly a few wins on the pitch.

Long live the Monarchs!

KTSI Premier League 2019 – Men’s

2019 was an unforgettable year for most of the Hong Kong people, while for KCC Men’s A team, the 2019 Lawn Bowls League season was equally memorable.

We started the journey by claiming our first trophy since 2013, winning the Division 1 winter league championship in late Februar y 2019. Yet, we didn’t continue the momentum in the first half of the Premier League, losing 3 out of 9 matches before the summer break.

After review and reorganization, the team got back on the right track and successfully clinched FOUR 8:0 victories in a row. This massive winning streak consolidated our advantage to put us in contention for the title.

Finally, our mission was completed on 23rd November. A 6:2 win against ILBC at home had marked another milestone at the closing moments of my captaincy. To lift up my first Premier League Division 1 championship for KCC is a very special moment. This honour must be shared with my valuable teammates, both regular ones and those who gave us a hand on certain occasions. Without them, my reign would not have terminated in perfection. Thank you once again for everyone’s effort!

Excellent results for KCC!!!

U25 Knock-out Singles - 2019 Men's Champion: James Po KCC's JS, James Po, won the Men's Championship in a very exciting finish played at KCC on 29 December 2019, in front of a strong crowd. With his last bowl, he delivered a firing shot to win the match by one shot and clinch the Championship. This is a two-day open competition and James beat a field of 42 bowlers.

In the Ladies U25 Knock-out Singles, Coby Wu did well to come 3rd Runner Up. The Hollis Trophy annual competition was played at KCC on 26 December 2019. This year, KCC managed to win back the beautiful trophy from the Police Bowling Club. It was an enjoyable afternoon of bowls.

Double Hong Kong Singles Championship for James Po On 5th January 2020, James Po, became the 2019 Men's Knock-Out Singles Champion.

After 5 knock-out rounds starting early morning, James was then pitched against our own Raymond Ho in the Semi Finals, played early evening at KBGC. In an exciting finish, James pipped Raymond to go through to the Finals.

In the Finals played at 9pm, James took on Philip Chan of KBGC in a match that went to the wire 16:16..... once again James persevered to reach the required 17 shots first and to take yet another Singles Championship in the space of a week....and at the tender age of 24!

This fantastic achievement by our Junior Subscriber James, follows from his win last Sunday in the Hong Kong National U25 Singles Championship 2019.....a Double Champion in our midst!

Our heartiest congratulations go to James Po!!

It was equally wonderful to have so many KCC supporters cheering him on that night.

The AGM was held at the Aerobic Room on 29th November 2019. The total number of registered members attended was overwhelming and met the quorum as defined in the Bye-law 9.9.

At the AGM, presentations of memorial plaque from the Section were made to all Team Captains to recognize their great effort and achievements in leading their team and to Eudice Chong for winning the Sportsperson of the year 2019 Award. Due to her absence, her plaque was accepted by her parents on her behalf.

The results of the election of Convenor and Subcommittee members for 2020 were as follows: - Jessie Rao (Convenor); K.S Wong (Secretary); Tim Chen; Harry Yuen (Treasurer); Peter KO; Monte Wong and Aziz Khan.

At the meeting, Jessie said he is honoured to be our next Convenor and he hopes to continue to contribute to the Section as well as Tim. On the whole Jessie gave a special thanks to Tim for drawing member’s interest and participation in all activities undertaken in the Section and for leading the Subcommittee in the past four wonderful years and congratulations to all newly elected Subcommittee members for 2020.

Winner of the 2019 KCC Sportsperson of the Year Award from the Tennis Section

Congratulations to Eudice Chong recipient of KCC Sportsperson of the year 2019. The Tennis Section is extremely proud of her achievements in 2019 and we all agree that Eudice is most deserving to receive this Award from KCC. A brief background, Eunice started playing tennis at the age of 6. By age of 10, she was beating everyone in her age group and sought out stronger competition by competing in the U12 and U14 categories. Eudice had excelled in the juniors and soon joined the HK National Junior Team. When Eudice joined KCC as a JS in 2012, she was already a top junior player at the age of 16. At the time, Eudice was heavily recruited by other prestige local Clubs but she preferred KCC because of her close relationship with the A+ Team Captain and had chosen KCC as the Club to play for.

In Collegiate Tennis, Eudice playing for Wesleyan University in America became the first player in history to win four successive NCAA Singles titles in any division of US collegiate tennis, including Men’s.

Eudice made her WTA professional tournament debut in 2016 at the Hong Kong Tennis Open playing doubles with Katherine IP (HKG). She turned pro in 2018, after graduating from University. Eudice achieved excellent results in both singles and doubles in 2019.

She was either the winner or runner-up at the below ITF Professional Women’s Tennis Tournaments: Hong Kong, Liuzhou China, Nanchang China, Huangshan China, Guiyang China, Thailand, Makinohara and Hamamatsu Japan, Uzbekistan and Singapore.

Eudice is currently Hong Kong’s No.1 ranked women’s tennis player. In WTA rankings, Eudice is currently ranked No: 451 (career high No: 394) in Singles and ranked No 181 in Doubles. Eudice’s dream is to play in all four Grand Slams: Australian Open, French Open Wimbledon and the US Open within five years. Our best wishes to Eudice and to her tennis career from all of us.

In July 2019, Eudice Chong (JS)/ Maggie Ng won the World University Games Women’s Doubles bronze medal in Naples, Italy.

In the same tournament, Eudice also won the bronze medal in the Women’s Singles Title.

- October In October 2019, Eudice Chong (JS)/ Aldila Sutjadi (IND) won the Ladies Doubles Title at the W25 Gosen Cup Swingbeach International Ladies Open in Makinohara, Japan.

White Truffle Dinner at Table

Danny Gohel had organized KCC Wine Society’s own white truffle event away from the club at a private kitchen, “Table” by Chef Sandy Keung who had masterfully paired our north piedmont cuisine with the truffles and the society’s Nebbiolo, Barbaresco and Barolo’s . This white truffle event will become an annual fixture in the Society’s annual tasting schedule.

KCC Wine Society AGM The first calendar event for the KCC Wine Society is the January AGM followed by the brunch which is generous with food and wines from the cellar. Time to bring out the magnums.

Friendly vs the Team Arch

BADMINTON

KCC Badminton Society hosted a friendly match against a team from the Arch residential complex. The match was sponsored by Dunlop, who provided several prizes for the afternoons best performers. The team from Arch brought a large and balanced team of men and women players across Jordan Road. Overall, it was fun and enjoyable afternoon, with each side winning its share of matches. Big thanks to Dunlop for their support, to Coach Liew, June and Herbie for organizing, and all the Society participants for the excellent turnout.

We are already planning our next friendly, and look forward to another great turnout.

The match kicked-off with the top players from both sides squaring off in doubles. The Arch team's top players were skilled and fast, but no match for the KCC team of Brandon and Liew. Overall KCC's top players including Liew, Brandon, Anoop, Kan won their matches convincingly. The women's draw was more challenging, as the Arch had several skilled players.

As is KCC's policy in friendly matches, we do not try to over-emphasize winning, and allow stronger and weaker players to pair to encourage learning and create a positive atmosphere. This also allows our younger players, to get valuable experience playing alongside strong players under real match conditions.

Badminton is one of the most popular games in Hong Kong and at KCC. The KCC Badminton Society continues to grow, and participation at Thursday night, as well as Tuesday and Friday mornings open-play continues to be strong. Anyone can join the Society and play on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, the format of play is doubles and all skill levels are represented. For children, KCC continues to offer professional coaching on Friday evenings, this is a valuable resource and we encourage everyone to take advantage.

La Pétanque

has come to the KCC

You can now play the ver y popular game or sport of Pétanque in the KCC’s newly constructed Pétanque court.

The modern form of the sport originated in 1907 in La Ciotat, in Provence, in southern France. It was devised by a French Jeu Provençal player named Jules Lenoir, whose rheumatism prevented him from playing the Jeu Provençal where the player has to run three steps before he throws the ball. The length of the pitch or field was reduced by roughly half, and the moving delivery was replaced with a stationary one.

Today the sport of Pétanque is played around the world by men and women, adults and children; it is even accessible to a disabled player in a wheelchair.

In fact, everybody can play the game. All you need is a set of Pétanque boules, a cochonnet (the jack), and a length of hard dirt or gravel, but it can also be played on grass, sand or other surfaces.

Thanks to the great efforts of KCC member Herbert Kwok and the support of our President Sarwar and his Committee, the Pétanque court was built in late December. You can look for it at the end of the children’s playground by the swimming pool.

Although the sport of Pétanque is new, KCC members have already shown that they are as good players as those from other Hong Kong organisations who play the game. On Sunday January 19th, the Pétanque Association of Hong Kong, China organised the first Hong Kong Pétanque Doubles Championship. It was held at the Indian Recreation Club in Causeway Bay. Two members of the KCC who entered the championship, namely Don McNeil and Georges Beau were able to come 5th overall (out of 13). Herbert himself won the championship with his French partner Alex Beauchamp, a very experienced player.

While Herbert has been playing for quite a while, both Don and Georges have only been playing Pétanque for a few weeks. This shows how easy it is to pick up the game. In fact, Pétanque is easy to learn but hard to master!

THE KCC TEAM

Report of the KCC Golf Society Match against Hong Kong Football Club at Macau Golf & Country Club on 25th November 2019 Sunny skies and a light breeze welcomed the 12 players from KCC and HKFC to Macau Golf & Country Club, for the third edition of this inter-club game, with HKFC having won on the two previous occasions. Perfect conditions for golf!

The line ups showed a disparity of golfing ability, with 5 of the 12 HKFC team playing off single figures, while in the KCC team we had no single figure golfers and 5 players with handicaps of 18 or less. However, the great merit of the handicap system was displayed, with five of the six matches being so evenly contested that their outcome remained in the balance until the last hole. In the end, HKFC prevailed 4-2 but the scoreline does not tell the whole story of the ebb and flow of each game, and the knife edge on which they stood.

Our Convenor Sanjay Nainani (handicap 24) and Vincent Lee (20) were first up, and showed us the way with a 4 & 3 victory over Scott Laws (handicap 8) and Bill King (10). However, it was not all plain sailing as KCC were 3 down after 3 holes, then managed to halt the decline by halving the 4th, won the 5th and kept this trend going and were 4 holes up after 15. Vincent’s comment after the match was characteristically modest, that Sanjay was very stable and won most of the holes. I believe that this understated Vincent’s contribution. KCC leading the match by 1-0.

The second flight pitted our antipodean duo, Captain Duncan Paul (handicap 15) and his mate Barry Cronin (11), against Jonny Brock (handicap 4) and Helen Hayward (11). The first nine holes were very closely contested, with never more than one hole in it either way, and KCC were 1 up at the turn. Then Helen produced some very impressive shots, and she played the second nine holes in one over par. After the match Helen described the trio of her male playing partners as “very naughty boys”, but clearly this did not upset her game at all. On the 17th tee Barry was deemed out of order in playing his tee shot at the same time as Helen was playing hers on the ladies tee to his left, but he rubbed salt into the wound by saving par from the bunker, and taking the match to the 18th all square.

However, there was no answer to Helen’s cool birdie 4 on this challenging par 5. So HKFC won 1 up, and the match was all square 1-1.

Next up were Barry Melbourne (handicap 22) and Peter Shum (18), up against HKFC’s Captain Terry Wright (handicap 7) and Jukka Hakli from Finland (13). KCC made a slow start and at one stage were 4 down. Peter helped to keep KCC in the match with some good putting, and the match came to a climax on the 18th with HKFC 1 up. Barry found himself in a dilemma with his second shot, whether to “go for broke” over the pond, or to play more conservatively. Terry Wright graciously gave Barry assistance with the yardage to carry the pond (about 200 yards), and says that he left it to Barry to make his decision. Barry’s account is that Terry gave him a look as if to say “give it a go”. With your knowledge of Barry’s character, I leave it to you to decide whether he needed any encouragement. Unfortunately, Barry’s ‘death or glory’ shot came to a watery end just short of dry land. Terry parred the 18th, and HKFC prevailed 2 holes up. HKFC leading the match 2-1.

In the fourth pairing Johnny Cheung (handicap 11) and Erle Pereira (17) faced Andrew Wood (handicap 12) and Sam Shei (22).

This was the one match in which KCC were giving some strokes to HKFC. Despite this, they found themselves 3 up after 11 holes and going well. At this point, Johnny had a tactical discussion with Erle and suggested that they play defensively and try to avoid mistakes, like a football team attempting to protect a lead.

The HKFC duo then came back at them strongly, winning 4 of the next 5 holes, and after the 16th hole they were ahead of KCC for the first time in the match, by one hole. The 17th was halved thanks to a clutch putt from Erle, so KCC had to win the 18th to halve the match. Johnny secured a par, but Andrew had a 6 and received a stroke, so the hole was halved and HKFC won by 1 hole. HKFC leading the match 3-1. KCC thus needed to win both of the remaining pairings in order to square the match.

In the penultimate pairing, CM Mak (handicap 20) and Gabriel Lam (21) were up against Justin Faulkner (handicap 9) and Ian Petersen (18). KCC’s experienced pair found themselves 2 holes down at the turn, but had a purple patch during the first half of the back nine, and were 2 up after 14 holes. CM had a good chance of a birdie putt to win the 15 th but just missed this, and KCC then lost the 16th and 17th where they did not receive any strokes, so they were all square standing on the 18th tee.

Unfortunately they lost the 18th hole by a shot, and the match by 1 hole. HKFC leading the match 4-1, an unassailable lead.

The final grouping saw David Brettell (handicap 23) and Daphne Da Rosa (23) matched up against Dallas Reid (handicap 5) and his partner Elsa Lee (23). The first 9 was a see-saw contest, with first HKFC going up by 2 holes, then KCC going ahead and at the turn the match was all square. Dallas played the 2nd nine in one over par, and Elsa found her rhythm, so the KCC pairing had to dig deep to remain in the match. Daphne holed two clutch putts, including one at the 17th to halve the hole in par, with Elsa’s birdie putt shaving the hole. So again, all square on the 18th tee.

Dallas and Elsa played the hole in orthodox fashion, and were respectively off the back fringe and just short of the green in three. Meanwhile, David had rebounded off a tree, hit his second from the rough just short of the pond (it was thought that it might have gone in), and then played a 4 iron just short of the green. All eyes were on the chip, which rolled to about 18 inches for the par, and Dallas missed his birdie putt (he was giving a stroke to KCC) and Elsa her par putt. KCC thus won the last pairing by 1 hole, and the match score was HKFC 4, KCC 2.

A hard fought match was followed by plenty of stories and repartee over drinks and a meal, with Terry Wright making his final speech as Captain of HKFC after several years of sterling service, as he is passing the baton to Andrew Wood.

With many thanks to our extremely hospitable hosts for a wonderful day of golf and fellowship. In the old cliché, golf was the winner and on this performance one year soon we will have the name KCC inscribed on the trophy.

Report of the KCC Golf Society outing to Nansha Golf Club on 4th December 2019 Another fine day for golf, this time on the picturesque Nansha Mountain Golf Course, slightly chilly to begin with, but once the sun rose above the tree line we all warmed up.

Today was a day of “firsts”. Our lady players were competing with the men in a unified competition for the first time, and Mary Ching expressed her pleasure about this, as it gave her the motivation to make the effort to do well, with, as she put it “everyone having a chance”. Mary (33 Stableford points) was pipped by Rita Leung, who captured 3rd place with 34 Stableford points. According to one of Mary’s playing partners John Ng she was very steady, particularly with up and downs near the greens, and she made a very good par on the steeply descending short ninth hole. Rita, meanwhile, had 4 pars, including on two of the par 5s, and her longer game was quite good.

For the first time, there was an award for the “bubble” player, the one in the middle of the Stableford order, and this was won by Barry Melbourne, the fourth member of the Tim, Mary and John group, so this was a good day for all of them.

Tim Chong shared his delight about his first ever chip in, at the 15th, with the ball following the undulating contours of the green into the cup, and his steady play resulted in 2nd place with 36 Stableford points. “It could have been better” he declared, so watch this space.

Another memorable first was Matt Stiller’s first outing today with our Golf Society. Matt’s iron play was a joy to behold, crisp, long and accurate, and once he made the sensible decision to put his driver away, his scoring improved. His finish on the back nine of par, birdie, birdie, par augurs well for the future, and we look forward to enjoying his company and play in future events.

John Ng himself did very well, winning the Stableford competition with 37 points, and while this was not of course his first win, it was apparently his first win for several years. John played to his handicap, and negotiated the more difficult holes well. His approach shots were good, and his putting saved him on several holes. John played the first 7 holes on the back 9 in 7 over par.

It was good to see Alfonso Cordero playing with us again. His playing partners were of course impressed by his well-grooved and smooth swing. While a bit rusty, he showed flashes of brilliance, with his tee shot on the 330 yard par 4 16th ending “one flag stick short of the green”, with a chip and a putt securing his birdie.

Alfonso’s buggy did not end so well, with a broken axle causing its demise – fortunately no-one was injured. th

The trio of Vincent Lee, CM Mak and Lai Ho Un shared 5 place in the Stableford standings with 32 points, a respectable showing.

One of the talking points was the lightning speed of the greens on the front nine, perhaps even faster than those of Augusta National. Ilan Horowitz shared with a chuckle his tally of 46 putts, not far short of half of his total strokes, and to his credit, as he putted back and forth on the greens, his smile remained. Other than that, I believe that he had a pact with nature, as on no fewer than three occasions the trees and rocks relocated his ball to the fairway. He put this down to “strategy”.

KCC GOLF SOCIETY LEAGUE MEETING DATES 2019-2020 Whether you regularly join I n our monthly Stableford League Games or you are interested to participate, below are the dates for the 12 games in the 2019/20 series, for you to mark in your diary.

While the dates given are those upon which it is anticipated that the Games will be played, presently unforeseen circumstances may result in a change to another date close to the scheduled one. Any changes will be notified well in advance.

There is a Stableford Competition for each event, and three Cup Competitions in Januar y, June and October, with attractive prizes for both members and guests, but this is also a great opportunity simply to enjoy the company of like-minded golfers and good fresh air in beautiful surroundings.

There is some subsidy for all the events, and the cost of each outing represents very good value for playing golf, both in Hong Kong and across the border in Mainland China. Guests are more than welcome to participate, so please feel free to invite your friends.

As you will see from the Schedule, there is a good mix of interesting courses, with four events in Hong Kong (two at Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling, at Clearwater Bay and at Discovery Bay), and eight in Mainland China, including two events at Mission Hills.

To recap, KCC entered the Hong Kong Table Tennis Association’s League Club Tournament this year in Division III seeded in 6th position out of eight teams.

Post-match updates have been regularly reported in our TT Society chat group and so I will not bore you with a recount of the match results. I will note, however, that KCC was in the hunt for medals until the very last match of the season. Unfortunately, we lost 2-5 to Buildings Department (the eventual champion of our division) and ended up 1 point short of a tie for the third place with SOF-B (see table below).

Everyone on the team did their best and showed improvement over last season. Hopefully, we will come back stronger next season and report even better results.

Inter-Club League 2019

KCC finished the season a disappointing 4th after we drew our final game of the season in a thrilling match with the Kowloon Tong Club.

The Annual Dinner was held at the Chinese Recreation Club in early January and they handed over the hosting of the League to the Hong Kong Country Club for the 2020 Season.

Hosting will then revert back to KCC in 2021 under the rotational system in place. Under the newly agreed rules clubs will now be allowed to play ex-professional and international players (albeit with a handicap system in place), so we may be in for some very interesting games next season. The League is also likely to expand to bring in the Hong Kong Cricket Club.

TEN PIN BOWLING

We held our AGM on 22nd September, 2019 and overall it was a very well attended event where we were able to draw up a new committee to take forward the society. This was then followed up by a casual dinner at the coffee shop where we all got to mingle and have a few laughs.

Introduction of Bowling Ladder On December 12, we invited the full society for a fun night to introduce a new concept of the "Bowling Ladder" where members could (and can still continue to) challenge each other upto 3 spots up. Everyone was initially put onto the ladder via lucky draw and accordingly assigned a handicap based on their most recent 2 games in order to make it fair and open to everyone. Overall, it was a huge success (complimentary food and drink was provided to all society members on the night) and we hope it will help to encourage healthy competition throughout the entire team as well as help build up our bowling scores along the way!

Inter-Club League

This has been on-going and we have had some highs and lows so far but are nevertheless still going strong in the handicap division and doing relatively well in the scratch league as well. We have completed most of our home games already and need to still play are away matches over the 2nd half of the year.

We always welcome new Society members so please do feel free to reach out to myself or any one of my fellow committee members for more details.
