David Hastings is a marine scientist and professor with more than 30 years of experience in oceanography, marine chemistry, and climate science. His academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, cum laude, from Princeton University, followed by a Master of Science and a PhD in Oceanography from the University of Washington, completed in 1994. His doctoral research focused on marine chemistry and environmental geochemistry, contributing to a strong scientific background in ocean systems and climate-related processes. His work consistently integrates chemistry and oceanography to examine environmental change and marine ecosystems. David Hastings began his professional career in environmental geochemistry at Battelle Columbus Laboratories before transitioning into academic research roles at the University of Washington, where he served as a Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant and later as an Oceanographer III. He further expanded his expertise through a postdoctoral appointment at the University of British Columbia and visiting research roles at Boston University. These positions strengthened his experience in oceanographic research, climate science, and interdisciplinary environmental studies across multiple academic and research institutions. David Hastings joined Eckerd College in 2000, where he advanced from Assistant Professor to Professor of Marine Science and Chemistry and served as department chair. His teaching and leadership supported curriculum development and interdisciplinary environmental education. His research focuses on marine geochemistry, chemical oceanography, paleoceanography, and climate science, including work on micondies related to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, secured over $1.5 million in research funding through approximately 30 grants, and received multiple awards for teaching, scholarship, and climate science communication.
