Both serif and sans-serif come in variety of weights, such as: book, medium, bold, extrabold and black. In addition, these weights also exist in italics.

The History of ITC Officina Sans The original name of ITC Officina Sans is infomative. First, the ITC portion stands for International Typeface Corporation, which was a type manufacture founded by Aaron Burns, Herb Lubalin and Edward Rondthaler in 1970. However, in 1988, the typeface was not called “Officina” yet. It had the working title “ITC Correspondence.” This is because it was designed for office documents and business correspondence. Specifically, it was meant to be produced by low-resolution laser printers.
Designer Erik Spiekermann said “My concept was to use Typewriter Fonts Letter Gothic and Courier as role models, and to create something new. ”

HERR ERIK SPIEKERMANN In the late 1980s, he started FontShop, which was the first mail-order distributor of digital fonts. In 2001, Erik Spiekermann started the United Designers Networks, which is now called Edenspiekermann. It has offices in Amsterdam, Berlin, San Francisco and Stuttgart. Spiekermann has been honored many times for his contributions to both typography and graphic design. In 2011, the German Design Prize presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Erik Spiekermann is a German typographer and designer. In 2007, he was the first designer ever inducted into the European Design Awards Hall of Fame.
He is currently a professor at the University of Arts Bremen
While attending Berlin’s Free University, he operated a letterpress printing press out of his basement. In the 1970s, he freelanced as a graphic designer in London, before returning to Germany. There he found MetaDesign with Uli Mayer-Johanssen and Hans Ch. Krßger. MetaDesign notably created design systems for Audi, Volkswagen, Heidelberg Printing, and the Berlin Transit system. Spiekermann designed many commerical typefaces, such as Berliner Grotesk (digitzed in 1979), ITC Officina Serif and Sans (1990), FF Meta (1991-1998), Fira Sans (2013) to name a few.

Function Originally, Officina was to stand between two worlds: old-fashioned typewriter type and traditional typography. Spiekermann’s goal was to create a family of type was ideally suited for business documents and office correspondence. It was intended as a workhorse typeface for business correspondence. However, Officina soon stood on its own. “Once ITC got picked up by the trendsetters to denote ‘coolness,’ it had lost its innocence. No pretending anymore that it onlu needed two weights for office correspondence.As a face used in magazines and advertising, it needed proper headline weights and one more weight in between Book and Bold.” --Erik Spiekermann
