REASON NUMBER 2: THE SHOW IS SUPER HYPOCRITICAL

You have Obama come and do a PSA about domestic violence, tell us #ItsOnUs and how we all need to speak up against it, and yet three of the night’s big nominees share a favorite past time of punching women in the face. What kind of message is that sending? “Hey boys and girls! Domestic violence is bad! Don’t do it! And up next is a medley by Eminem, Chris Brown, and R. Kelly called “I Believe I Can Tie You To The Bed And Set The House Of Fire/New Flame”. Seems pretty damn stupid and quite hypocritical if you ask me. However, I would have paid good money to see Chris Brown’s face right after that PSA. Awkward.

REASON NUMBER 3: THE BEST NEW ARTIST CATEGORY IS FULL OF NOT SO NEW ARTISTS HAIM has been performing since 2007. Bastille formed in 2010.

Iggy Azalea was on YouTube back in 2011 uploading videos. And Brandy Clark has been writing songs for other artists AND opening for them for years! (SIDE NOTE: 2 out of the 5 Best New Artist nominees are gay) So how are these artists “new” when they’ve already been out for a few years? Dumb.

REASON NUMBER 4: MANY GREAT ARTISTS HAVE YET TO WIN AN AWARD

The GRAMMY’s Are A Joke… Like Seriously.

Diana Ross, Bob Marley, The Beach Boys, Janis Joplin, Sam Cooke, Kiss, Journey, Depeche Mode, Queen and so many more actually talented artist have yet to receive a GRAMMY. And yet, other “artists” like Baha Men (“Who Let The Dogs Out?”), Milli Vanili, MC Hammer, Creed, and even President Obama have all won a GRAMMY! So… just let that sink in.

After watching the nine-hour long telecast of the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards hosted by what’s-his-face from thatone-cop-show on CBS, I was left scratching my head… yet again. And no, I’m not scratching my head because this cold ass weather is making my head itch like a Turkish prostitute wearing a wool turtleneck. I’m confused as hell as to why the GRAMMY’s are even relevant anymore. Like seriously… it’s one big sham! Here are few reasons why the GRAMMYs are Like I said… this award show is a big joke. Besides a week or a joke. two sales increase for those artists that win, the GRAMMYs really do NOTHING for an artist (Bon Iver, Esperanza Spalding, Marc Cohen). And do we really need 83 categories with five nominees each? You do the math… that’s a ton each year. So REASON NUMBER 1: VOTES DON’T REALLY COUNT First of all, who the hell is the GRAMMY voting committee yeah… those are just some of the reasons why I have a love/ and why should I trust them? Granted, I mute the TV whenever hate relationship with the awards show. Will I tune in next year that bearded old guy with the glasses comes on to talk so I’m for the event? Of course! I love a good hot mess. sure he’s probably mentioned who’s in the committee. DA: Did you originate from Arizona?

TD: No, actually I’m from North Carolina.

DA: Oh! A southern girl!

TD: Yeah, I used to come down to Atlanta all the time and hang out at Backstreet and catch the shows. A lot of my early drag experience was there. I came out very late, so being in North Carolina, we would take road trips to Atlanta once or twice a year. To see the size of the community, especially around Pride, it was a very liberating experience for me. Of course I was obsessed with drag. I’d go to all the drag shows.

DA: Now the big question: what’s with the turkey that you dropped from between your legs at the opening of the show?

TD: Oh you never saw the video? One of the things about me is that I raise chickens. Like show chickens. I’ve always had chickens as pets. They’re so funny to me, and they make me happy. Including the turkey was kind of like homage to my poultry fetish.

DA: What was your best RuPaul experience?

TD: I’ll tell you, I know exactly what it was. It was before we even starting taping for the show, we recorded our duets with RuPaul… for Cover Girl 2 (sold on iTunes). I walk in and RuPaul is sitting there.

We didn’t know that we were going to meet her or anything. So I walk in and Ru’s like ‘Tempest DuJour, how are the kids and blah, blah, blah.’ She knew stuff about my life. It was overwhelming. It was one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me in my life. She said that she handpicked me for the show. What a great honor that was to hear.

David Atlanta: It was a tough first challenge, I mean the ‘Naked Challenge’ come on! It seems a little unfair to a lot of queens in the competition. A girl puts on a lot of make-up and under garments, and then it all comes down to an unflattering body stocking. How did you feel DA: Why do you think she handpicked you? about that?

TD: Why wouldn’t you? No I’m kidding. That’s a Violet Chachki answer. The Tempest answer is that I’ve worked really hard to create this character. I do very well in my hometown. So I must be doing DA: Why was it liberating? something right. When the internationally famed Puerto Rican heartthrob came out in 2010, declaring himself on Twitter “a fortunate homosexual man” who’s “very blessed to be who I am,” Martin, 43, stepped out of the closet and into himself. Reflecting the free life he’s currently basking in are the raw sounds and personal soliloquies on the singer’s 10th studio album, A Quien Quiera Escuchar (To Whomever Wants to Listen).

In conversation, Martin is notably laidback, sincere and personal as he opens up about how his six-year-long relationship with Carlos Gonzalez Abella inspired his latest music (“I love being in love”), what he’s really trying to convey with all his shirtless selfies and the “powerful” coming out stories the LGBT community shares with him. And whether he’s ruminating on his two sons or anticipating shaking his bon-bon with more male dancers onstage, his smile radiates even on the phone. This is a new, happier Ricky Martin, and yes, we’re listening.

David Atlanta: On behalf of the gay community, thank you for all you do.

Ricky Martin: (Laughs) Oh, man – thank you very much. I laugh so much at the reaction of the people; it’s so funny. It really is amazing.

DA: I get a kick out of it too. Are you more comfortable without clothes?

How does it feel to be able to be mutual attraction? yourself musically?

RM: Listen, for me, it’s about liberty and it’s about being you – me, in this case – and living life with transparency and just being.

It’s so amazing to know that you have nothing to hide, man. What you see is what you get. And this is me. And I don’t wear a mask to go onstage, and the support that I’ve received from my community since I came out has been amazing. It’s one of those things that (makes) you say, “Oh my god, why didn’t I do this before?” But then again, you know how it goes – everybody accepts who they are at their own time. When I sent that tweet a few years ago just letting people know that I am gay it was the most amazing day of my life after the birth of my kids. And it is what it is. Now my life is simple and honest and transparent, and this is me. And that’s what my social media’s about – being yourself.

RM: When I started recording this album I had no idea what I wanted to talk about, which is completely different to what it was like in the past, when I said, “OK, I think I wanna get into the studio,” and I had a blank canvas in front of me and all I did was throw colors and started working with amazing producers, and they helped me. It was the most amazing psychoanalysis, to be honest, to work with other writers and co-producers who helped me to put myself in order.

I listened to it today and I’m like, “Wow – there is poetry and there is honesty in these lyrics.” And there are some powerful slogans that people are quoting through social media. People are gravitating to (these lyrics) and using them

and turning them into their own slogans.

Once again, it’s about honesty. It’s about vulnerability.

DA: How much of the music on this album was inspired by your own personal love life, particularly your time with ex-partner Carlos Gonzalez Abella?

RM: After six years of being in a very steady relationship with him, yes, we have a lot of stories and we have a lot of moments of love and lots of light and yes, he is part of this album. It’s not about what I’ve lived (through) this year that we broke up or even the last five years. It’s decades of allowing myself to really go back and remember specific relationships that really (affected) me in many ways. And it became music. It’s never too late.
