any of us know the friendly Piedmont Park adjacent bar Blake’s, as one of the best neighborhood bars and perfect place to meet with friends and let the pressures of Midtown living melt away with each delicious drink. But did you know of the Sunday-Funday dynamic-duo known as “Brit & Tit”? Each side of this duo is a gem on their own. Together, they are an unstoppable freight train of ridiculous sayings, and a contagious riot of energy that bounces between them. Robin hails from Britain, by way of Chicago, and has lived in Atlanta for three years. Lateasha Shuntel has been working in various locations in Atlanta for years, and at Blake’s for eight years. Together, they have been working together for just over a year, delighting everyone for Sunday-Fundays.

What’s your signature drink?

Robin: On Sunday’s I love to make a Bloody Mary. I’m actually entered in a Bloody Mary competition for that show Chopped. I’m a purist towards a Bloody Mary, but my secret ingredients are A1 steak sauce and pickled okra (as a nod to the south).

Lateasha: I’m a simple ghetto girl. I make a great drink out of Grey Goose vodka, watermelon schnapps, and Sprite.

Robin also loves to make Buttery Nipples and pour them down my breasts.

Who is your favorite kind of customer?

Robin: I like flirtatious and repeat customers, or repeated flirtatious customers, or customers flirting repeatedly…can you sense a theme?

ust like autumn promises to color the landscape, movie theaters across the continent will be awash in the flickering lights of the fall film festival season. From Palm Springs to Pittsburgh, from Seattle to Savannah, from Milwaukee to Montreal, and right here in Atlanta, no other time of year brings more LGBT film fests to North America. As autumn opens, great gay & lesbian works of cinema will cast rainbows onto silver screens everywhere.

Award-winning family fare is for free on Sunday morning with a screening of the 1974 classic Free To Be...You And Me. Starring Marlo Thomas, the groundbreaking 1974 TV special delivers positive messages about growth and change.

With scores of choices, it’s impossible to outline every offering. David Atlanta will focus on few standout features for each day of the 2014 Out On Film Festival.

Out On Film, now in its 27th year, has become a relished Atlanta staple. Spanning eight days and offering 57 screenings, it one of the world’s oldest LGBT film festivals. Queens and Cowboys: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo

Tuesday, October 7 Queens and Cowboy: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo This chronicles a complete season of roping and riding across North America with the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA). Courageous cowboys & cowgirls are questing to qualify for the World Finals at the end of the season. Along the way, they’ll bust every stereotype in the book. The film focuses on five members of the IGRA, from Wade Earp, a descendant of cowboy legend Wyatt Earp and one of the best competitors on the circuit, to Char Duran, a female bull rider who’s never won a buckle but seems determined to die trying.

Club King Mario Diaz’s reign as club king began in the mid-1990s when he opened The Cock, the East Village gay bar which became infamous for embracing raunch and seediness. While Mayor Rudy Gulliani was cleaning Times Square of porno theaters & strip clubs, Diaz was defiantly re-introducing sex-positive energy back into Manhattan nightlife. After conquering New York, Diaz moved west. Combining ’70s porn chic, subversive go-go boy stylings, and his own wit, he successfully infiltrated the L.A. nightlife. MamaBear Charities, the brainchild and pet project of Richard Spillane, will be introduced to the world in a big way at Lips restaurant on Tuesday, October 7 with an event entitled Out & Proud – A Celebration. Richard’s been working on this event for some time and is using this celebration of awareness as his Novice project for the Atlanta chapter of the Sister’s of Perpetual Indulgence.

The all-star cast includes some of Atlanta’s favorite local drag performers including Monica Van Pelt, Nicole Page Brooks and Evah Destruction. Added to the spicy mix is legendary adult film star Michael Brandon and multiple GAYVN award winning porn star, Scott Spears. Miss Gay America ICON 2012, Jennifer Warner and Celeste Holmes will be sharing the hosting duties of the night. Visiting Atlanta for the first time is Out & Proud special guest, Sister Roma of the San Francisco chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Everyone performing and/or participating in Out & Proud have a special place in their hearts for the three organizations that MamaBear Charities will initially support: Lost-n-Found Youth, the MISTER Center, and the Atlanta Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

Out & Proud – A Celebration got a little extra oomph in recent weeks as Sister Roma went on the offensive with mega social media giant, Facebook, on their disturbing ‘real name’ policy. If you’ve been living under a rock, here’s the gist: Say that you’re someone whose Facebook name is not the same as the name listed on your ID, you could be subject to a total shut down of your Facebook page. This affects a great many, the most obvious might be those known by their stage name, or those whose boy name or girl name that does not match their ID name or gender. Drag queens and kings, strippers and performers of all kind (with a stage name), transsexuals and transgendered, and even those in other countries who use Facebook as a way of sounding-off in places where freedom of speech in no way matches the level in America.

Sister Roma became directly involved a few weeks ago when she logged onto Facebook and was prompted to enter her real name. “I wasn’t fully aware that it was going to pop up on my profile,” Roma says. “I was like ‘Oh! They changed my profile and now it reads Michael Williams’. That’s not me, this is so weird.” Roma attempted to follow up with Facebook to remedy the profile issue to no avail. It was only after Roma, and many others, used the very social media that was targeting them to fight back that Roma started getting phone calls for interviews. Then the story hit global news with BBC and CNN. Roma states that “it’s obviously more than just a bunch of drag queens complaining about not being able to call themselves by their drag names.”

Facebook eventually agreed to meet with Roma and other leaders of the opposition towards Facebook’s new policy.

Once again, Facebook was not open to suggestions on their policy, believing that it’s to keep their user environment safe and they want people to trust who they are talking to, according to Roma. “They did admit, which was interesting, that they do not plan to enforce their policy.” Roma is saying that this basically means that someone within the Facebook community has to report someone for false ID for Facebook to follow up with that profile.

Roma and her cohorts have another meeting scheduled with Facebook on September 29. “There are people who are really upset,” Roma says. “We want Facebook to realize that this is way bigger than they seem to understand.” A “huge protest” is planned on the steps of City Hall on Thursday, October 2 at 11 a.m., and they are welcoming other groups and organizations around the country to organize demonstrations or protests at the same time.

Facebook, and social media in general, has evolved over time to, for many, become the hub of their social experience. The scope of this may be much more intrusive than even Sister Roma realizes. Anyone who uses a pseudonym is potentially a target, not just the currently targeted LGBT individuals with stage names.

Make Out on Film Plans with J.C. Calciano, Jack Turner and The 10 Year Plan

f you’ve ever reached into the drawer beside the bed – and you know the one I’m talking about – only to discover condoms already covered in lube, then the David sponsored Out on Film Friday night feature, The 10 Year Plan, is for you.

Or if you use a fake name on Grindr.

Or if you like flirting with go-go boys.

Or, yes, even if you’re an all-in, first date, U-Haul on speed dial, die-hard romantic, and in that case, you should already have committed to buying tickets to the Friday night feature, where you’ll not only have the chance to screen writer-director J.C. Calciano’s third romantic comedy The 10 Year Plan, but engage Calciano and straight, but sexy, lead Jack Turner in a post-film Q&A.

Myles (Turner) is an overeager, social media stalking, serial dater, searching for his Mr. Right, while breezy cop Brody (Michael Adam Hamilton) has a rotating roster of Mr. Right Now’s on Grindr.

It’s a conundrum that Calciano embraces during his version of the big grand gesture in the final moments of The 10 Year Plan.

“Years ago you have the movies where you have to go get the girl or the guy back at the end and it was the race to the airport, it was always the get to the train station, let me catch them before they do this. But now it’s why the hell don’t you call them on the cell-phone and say I’m sorry … you don’t have to chase anyone down to make that big romantic gesture, you could just text them a smiley face and a wink and then it’s like, okay, the movie is over.”

It’s a rom-com, so think happy ending but while cookie-cutter on the outset, it’s the conscious subtleties in The 10 Year Plan that make it an enjoyable piece of LGBT cinema. That includes a scene where Myles is forced – after going sex toy shopping with Brody – to clean a spilled bottle of lube from his bedside drawer.

“Everybody thinks that things happen to them that happen to no one else and I come from this: well if it happened to me, then it happened to everybody else,” Calciano laughs. “So I try to notice all the things in my day and make note of the silly things that happen that I’m sure happens to everyone but they don’t give it a second thought. Those are the things that really bring a film into your heart. It’s the things you’re like ‘no one knows that about me’ or ‘I thought that was only me.’ Those little things are really important elements in making a story very personal.”

And Calciano’s filmmaking comes from a very personal point of view.

In The 10 Year Plan, main character Brody plays a cop, out at work with an open, affirming, and insightful, straight partner, played expertly by Moronai Kanekoa. Neither Brody nor his partner portray character types that are often seen on the silver screen – in gay or straight cinema. But that doesn’t matter to Calciano.

“Being gay is secondary to the friendships, the storyline and the relationships,” Calciano admits. “I am very blessed in the fact that I have this kind of life where me and my partner – I’ve been with my partner fifteen years now – we exist in a world, maybe because we live in West Hollywood, that none of it’s even a thought. It is my hope for the rest of the world to enjoy that one day soon and I think that’s kind of where my movies go, is that the gay thing is not a thought, it is a seamless part where nobody cares or brings attention to it. There’s no coming out, anything like that. That’s where I set my movies in the world of where either I currently live or where I want society to be in the future.”

While the October 3 screening and post-film discussion is most immediate in Calciano’s future, he’s currently working on bringing together several ideas that may hopefully have him collaborating with other writers, including another rom-com, an erotic thriller and a family feature film.

David Atlanta: Myles is very – let’s say overeager – in his search for love, do you identify more with Myles, Brody or would you say you’re a comfortable balance between the two?

Jack Turner: I’m certainly not as overeager as Myles – he’s pretty extreme. Also, I think Brody might be a bit extreme, too. I’m somewhere in the middle there and I’m okay with that. (Laughs) DA: The strip scene between you and Michael, any good outtakes we should be on the look out for when 10YP hits DVD? JT: (Laughs) There’s definitely an outtake as Michael kind of was going down on my body with the strip tease – the reaction shot was mine, the camera was on my face, he was out of frame at this point – he squeezed my balls. I obviously had a very physical reaction to that.

DA: You worked for Google before making the leap to acting, would we find any surprising if we Googled Jack Turner?

JT: You might get some notes that I am in a band called Cable Car and we’ve been doing quite well. We’ll have a new EP out in the next three weeks or so. That might surprise a few people.

The kick off for this event is the highly anticipated Grilled Cheese Meltdown, a competition with top chef participants from many of Atlanta’s edgy and lauded restaurants, bakeries, and creameries, all vying to be crowned Atlanta Grilled Cheese Champion. Last year’s winner, Home Grown, with a grilled cheese created by Chef Kevin Clark, won out with a bacon, pimento cheese, and fried green tomato grilled cheese on Texas toast. Can you imagine what outlandish melted concoctions will arise this year? The winner will be chosen by popular vote from the festival attendees who get to taste a sample of each grilled cheese.

After that, stroll around the booths sampling from 75 of the world’s finest cheesemakers and artisan food producers.

A Hader You Can Love

SNL alumnus talks tasty men, Stefon and his ‘license to be totally fabulous’

S

aturday night is a lot less spicy without Stefon, the fabulous “Weekend Update” club correspondent that turned actor Bill Hader into a comic star. But fear not. While Stefon has retired from Saturday Night Live to a “haunted diaper” in Chelsea, as Hader tells me in our recent chat, the funny-man flexes his impressive dramatic chops in The Skeleton Twins, playing Kristen Wiig’s twin, Milo, a struggling actor.

By Chris Azzopardi BH: (Laughs) I knew... I mean, I’ve gone out with enough of my gay friends to know.

DA: The finger in the ear during the money note – was that Mariah Carey-inspired?

BH: No, no. It was just me messing around. So much of that stuff was me just trying to make Kristen laugh and just knowing her sense of humor and what will make her laugh. I thought that was something that would.

Aaaand, he’s gay.

During our talk, Hader discussed his “license to be totally DA: You’re a natural in that lady garb. fabulous” as Milo, his regrettable transgender-centric SNL sketch, and the savory highlights of his A-list make-out roster. BH: Oh, thank you.

David Atlanta: You lip-syncing to Starship’s “Noth- DA: Before The Skeleton Twins, how experienced ing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” in The Skeleton Twins were you with cross-dressing? would make everyone on RuPaul’s Drag Race so BH: Well, I had done some of it at Saturday Night Live, but not proud. in my life. Not a lot of cross dressing in my life.

Bill Hader: (Laughs) You have to get me on that show! That would just be the best.

DA: Not yet.

DA: How much drag did you and Kristen observe BH: Not yet. Maybe I will now. I remember we did a senior while training for the famed lip-syncing sequence? sketch in high school where we made fun of a group of moms called the “Brown Bag Lunch.” They were these moms who BH: I mean, we had to learn that song, and we had a lot of fun put a lot of money into our high school, who would have these doing that, but we didn’t have a lot of time. There wasn’t a lot brown bag lunch things where they’d sit around and gossip of time in the day to do it. It was definitely a quick “we gotta about school – just a bunch of rich moms. We did a sketch at go; we have a lot more to shoot today” moment, so it’s cool it our homecoming and I played the main mom. We just recently all came out so well. watched that – my dad found it – and I’m essentially doing Stefon. I mean, it’s pretty crazy. I’m in high school! It’s pretty DA: So, what you’re saying is you already knew insane. But, I look goooood! My wife’s like, “Wow, you look how to sissy that walk. great. You’re an attractive woman.”

DA: There’s a scene in the film where you go to a BH: Yeah, they’re already part of the party, but I just know they’re gay bar only to find yourself there on dyke night. all good kissers. I guess those guys, and then to mix it up, Danny What’s been your real-life gay bar experience?

McBride because I feel like I’d get the shit kicked out of me.

BH: You know, I haven’t hung out that much in gay bars, but I don’t go to bars in general. I remember going to one with writers from SNL. There was a group of us and we went to a gay bar, because two of our writers were gay. It was fine. I had a good time. But I don’t really go out. I’m reeeeally boring. (Laughs)

DA: SNL has been criticized for its portrayal of the gay community and some of its homoerotic cheap shots. Did you ever turn down a skit or were you ever hesitant to do a sketch because it might offend the gay community? As a comedian, how conscious are you of avoiding stereotypes whether on SNL or in The Skeleton Twins?

DA: You’re such a dad.

BH: In Skeleton Twins I honestly didn’t think about it. The BH: I’m a total dad. I’m really boring. I stay at home and I read. thing I liked about the script was that Milo being gay wasn’t Because I did Stefon people assume that I go to all these clubs his problem. That wasn’t the big issue in his life. He had a lot and I get invited to a lot of those things, but nah. of other issues, and he just happens to be gay, which I thought was really great.

DA: And yet you live this exciting life onscreen. As far as SNL is concerned, Stefon was the same thing. His BH: Yeah, but it didn’t make the cut. I’m gonna tell you right joke isn’t that he’s gay – the joke is that he’s just really bad at now, that was actually pretty hot. It was a hot scene. his life. And that he’s on a lot of drugs. I don’t know if I ever said no to anything, but I know the transgender community DA: What does Paul Rudd taste like? got really mad at a sketch I was in about estrogen – EstroMaxxx, about a pill – which made total sense. But it happens, BH: He tastes like chicken, and James Franco tastes like and the show takes responsibility for it. We have a ton of gay cinnamon. people who work on the show.

DA: You even got to fondle Paul’s man-aries.

BH: Yeah, I touched his nipples.

DA: In retrospect, would you have passed on that skit had you known it would offend the transgender community?

DA: Bill, this doesn’t sound like a very boring life to me.

BH: Yeah, I know. It’s weird because we’ll be doing it and our wives are just watching the show in the green room like, “Hahaha. OK, guys.”

DA: Given your history of makeout sessions with men: If you could play spin the bottle with any group of guys, who would you invite to that party?

BH: Paul, James, Ty...

BH: Yeah. I mean, I think the writers wouldn’t have written it. BH: Actually, not that much, to be honest. Let me think.

I don’t think anyone wrote it to hurt anybody’s feelings, but This might be the only one that I’ve been sent. It’s interestonce that happened it was like, “Oh yeah. Point taken. Sorry.” ing. During the Q&A, after the first screening of the movie at Sundance, someone asked us about (the similarities between) DA: Actors who take LGBT roles often say you Stefon and Milo and I went, “Oh, yeah!” Craig, who is gay, can’t really play gay, but you’re effortless as Milo. took the question because I didn’t know how to answer it. I What’s the trick? As a straight man, how do you went, “Uhhh.” The only thing those two guys have in common transcend sexuality for a role? is that they’re gay, which is a good way of answering it.

BH: I didn’t think about it that way, to be completely honest.

You just kind of do it and you find a part of you that’s this Venn diagram, where you overlay with the character. So, my relationship with Ty Burrell’s character: I just thought of high school romance, that’s what I thought of – a girl I dated in high school and how that made me feel. And it’s also just kind of hanging out with Ty. He’s a really funny, nice guy. Things like that – actual feelings of like, “What a great guy, he’s so nice” – play into it. You have to be very open. He’s giving you something and you have to give back, and you just play off each other. But I trusted Craig. I was just like, “I’m gonna try a bunch of stuff,” and Craig would tell me if it was too much.

Usually his note was, “You can go a little further with it. You don’t have to be so subtle.”

DA: Would Stefon and Milo be friends?

BH: Craig says no, and I think he has a better idea than I do.

Craig was like, “Oh my god, no.” I think Stefon would freak Milo out.

DA: I think Stefon would freak a lot of people out.

BH: Yeah, you would be missing for a couple of weeks. If you went out with him, you’d have friends, parents, people pleading on the news, “Where’s our son?”

DA: Where is Stefon these days?

BH: He’s on the corner of 23rd and 9th some place.

DA: And if a gay man is giving you permission to go Somewhere in Chelsea hanging out inside a haunted diaper. gayer, you know you can.

BH: Yeah, exactly. He’s like, “I think you can be a little bitchy to (Kristen) now.

Be a little flippant. I think he would be sassy with Kristen right here.” I remember when I was in drag and he was like, “You have complete license to be totally fabulous,” because (I was playing him) the opposite. I would try to sometimes play him in a way that was too subtle, and Craig was like, “Don’t worry about people saying it’s gonna be stereotypical – these are my friends.”

DA: Because of your role as Stefon on SNL, how often are you pitched gay roles?

‘Little Leslie’ Goes BIG

way back to when I was fourteen years old. I was givin’ boys my lunch money so the would go out in woods (ha ha).

I don’t know if it’s a generational thing or what, but I have noticed that a lot of gay men my age have a thing for straight men. I thought it was worth exploring in a show.

So I call it; ‘Say Cheese: My Life in Front of the Camera,’ which leads people to believe it’s gonna be something about you know, Hollywood or having my picture taken. But it’s much more about [my sexpoits]. I think the Atlanta crowd will really love it because it’s southern, and a lot of my stories are about boys that I’ve drug out of Swinging Richard’s.

That’s where I would go when I wanted a new straight boyfriend! Honey, I’ve lived with some of them! I drug this one boy from there, Brandon, and I lived with him for ten years!

So, it’s exploring why I’m 60 years old, and I’ve never ever had a gay boyfriend.

It’s very funny about all my insane stories about these boys…and I have pictures! I was offered five episodes on American Horror Story, but LJ: That Gary Busey is not all there. It’s really a sad situation. they needed me in New Orleans the exact days they needed me You take somebody whose won an academy award, but then in London for Big Brother. I screamed at my manager saying ‘this he had that horrible accident, and now he’s not all there. He is not happening!’ I’ve never in 33 years in the business had to kept telling the same story over and over. That he went to the make a decision like that. light and he’s back spreading the love. I was like ‘the love?

People would say, ‘that funny little guy from Will & Grace,’ but they don’t know Leslie Jordan. After the show, I couldn’t get DA: Oh, you mean Angelique Morgan. Bitch or the down the streets in London. People were yelling out of taxi cabs, bitchiest? ’Hey Little Leslie!’ and give me the thumbs up. That’s what they call me, ‘Little Leslie.’

LJ: In her saner moments, you have to have some respect for her cause she uses the only thing she has, which is that body. DA: There have been rumors that there might be a You know she stripped for years, and she’s no spring chicken. Will & Grace Reunion show. Do you think that might What do you do when you’re an old stripper? She is without happen? a doubt the most self-involved human being I’ve ever seen.

She has these routines that are almost bordering on OCD. She LJ: No, that’s a total rumor I can assure you. You know, you can’t snorts aromatherapy oil. go back. As much as people would like it, you just can’t go back.

DA: She snorts the oils?

And then puttin’ on face masks and laying down. I’d think, ‘Oh thank God she’s finally going to sleep.’ But about an hour later, BAM! Up like a light. She was nuts! I’ve never figured it out...such a tweaker.

DA: Do you regret not doing American Horror Story?
