“Switzerland is a place where every turn is a postcard and every moment a discovery.”
Orson Welles
Switzerland:
A place where everything feels like a fairy tale, with adventures waiting in the mountains, forests, and castles. It’s a land of tranquillity and peace, where you can explore beautiful lakes and charming villages while breathing in the fresh, clean air. It’s a country where they value independence, respect their traditions, and continue to move forward.
Cheese:
A remarkable creation that transforms milk into something delicious through careful craftsmanship. The cheesemaker adds the right amount of rennet and cultures, which causes the milk to curdle and separate into solids and liquids. As the curds form, they are gently pressed and drained before being aged, resulting in the magic that is cheese. It truly feels enchanting!
There are over 1,800 types of cheese in the world, with more being created all the time. This includes cheese made from cows, sheep, goats, and Buffalos. Some cheeses are produced in large quantities, while others are produced at a local level. A visit to the cheese stall is always a treat on market day! The way that cheese is produced from milk and transformed through a clever process, dates back to Roman times. Anyone travelling will be impressed by the great variety of cheeses that other countries have to offer. From tangy Roquefort to buttery Brie and grilled Halloumi, each cheese is connected to a nation.
This book is inspired by one such nation, known for its snowcapped mountains, cuckoo clocks, and chocolate. It’s the story of a young man who travels there to make his dream into reality. To do so, he must keep trying until he finds a solution to his problem.

Jonni Greenbelt loved the countryside more than anything. The rolling hills, the whispering trees, and the wide-open green spaces made him feel alive, filling him with a sense of well-being and joy. Jonni lived with his parents and his sister on a small farm. They were a dedicated and hardworking family, and their true gift was in knowing how to live fully, embracing each moment with optimism and delight.
One day, Jonni had a great idea for helping his family. He would open a farm shop in the corner of his parent’s green field in a rarely used shed. He began by organising the space, filling his shelves with the freshest vegetables from the farm. Yet, he soon realised that something vital was missing from his farm shop, inspiring him to take action and begin an international adventure.
Now, it’s your turn to join Jonni in his adventure and discover if he can make his dream of opening a farm shop into a reality and help his family.
Let’s begin!

Jonni Greenbelt was a young man who loved the countryside.

He loved open spaces, and green fields that made people healthy and happy.

He loved the sound of wheatfields in the summer as they rustled in the breeze.

He loved the sound of a gentle bubbling stream as water flowed over its rocks.

He loved the sound of birds chirping in the trees, filling the air with their birdsong.

He loved the sound of busy bees making honey from the flowers.

Jonni’s Parents lived in harmony and believed that action speaks louder than words.

Jonni’s sister Katherine loved reading books in the evening and discovering new things.

One day Jonni decided he would convert an old shed on his parent’s farm into a farm shop.

He filled his farm shop with as many vegetables as he could find…but a customer pointed out that one thing missing…
There was no cheese!

Jonni had a problem and had to decide what action to take.

The first action he took was to try and make his own cheese, but it turned out to be a complete mess!

The second action Jonni took was to contact Professor Bramble, a world-famous cheese expert. Here is the text he sent him…
Hello Professor Bramble! I hope you are cheesing well!
I’m opening a farm shop in my parents greenfield I’m determined that it becomes a beloved local spot!
I’ve been getting really interested in cheese lately and would love to learn more about all the different types . What makes each cheese unique? Which ones are best for sandwiches , snacks , or maybe even a cheese tasting?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts when you have a moment! ✨
Jonni Greenbelt

A few minutes later Jonni received a reply…
Hello Jonni!
There are so many types of cheese out there, it’s hard to know where to start!
Mozzarella is great for pizza , but you might want to try Cheddar for a richer flavor , or Brie for something creamy and soft . For snacks, Gouda or Feta are always a hit! A cheese tasting? That’s a fun idea! Try a mix of soft, hard, and blue cheeses (like Roquefort or Stilton) to really experience the range of flavours . Why don’t you go to Switzerland and taste a delicious fondue, which is a mixture of Gruyère, and Emmental cheese. It’s a smooth, melty, experience .
Can’t wait to see what you try! Keep me posted!

Jonni went to see Katherine, who showed him a book about cheeses from around the world.
Jonni discovered that there are four main types of cheese:
Fresh cheeses (like Ricotta and Mozzarella)
Soft cheeses (like Brie and Camembert)
Semi-soft cheeses (like Gouda and Havarti)
Hard cheeses (like Cheddar and Parmesan)
Blue cheeses (like Roquefort and Gorgonzola, and Shropshire Blue)

Then Jonni and Katherine looked at maps of the world, to learn more about Switzerland. Here is what they found…
Home of the Alps – Switzerland is famous for its stunning Alps, which cover about 60% of the country.
Neutral Country – Switzerland has a policy of neutrality and hasn’t been involved in a military conflict for over 200 years.
Multiple Languages – Switzerland has four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh.
Swiss Chocolate – Switzerland is world-renowned for its high-quality chocolate, and it’s the birthplace of
Inventions – The Swiss invented the popular Swiss Army knife, known for its practicality and multifunctionality.
Watches – Switzerland is home to some of the most famous luxury watch brands, including Rolex and Patek Philippe.
Direct Democracy – Switzerland has a unique system of government, where the people get to vote on any laws through the use of referendums.
Lake Geneva – Switzerland is home to Lake Geneva, one of the largest lakes in Europe.
Matterhorn – One of the most famous mountains in the world, the Matterhorn is located on the border of Switzerland and Italy.
Clean and Green – Switzerland is known for its clean environment, and beautiful landscapes.

Jonni knew the action he wanted to take. He would fly to Switzerland and bring back some Special cheese for his farm shop.

The airport was an exciting place, and Jonni was looking forward to learning about Switzerland and its cheese!
However, when Jonni landed in Switzerland, he found he had another problem. He couldn’t speak German, the main language of Switzerland. He had to take action to solve this problem.

Luckily, Jonni had brought a translation device with him, as well as his smartphone. The only thing was that the device didn’t work very well sometimes…

Jonni found Switzerland to be a very beautiful and peaceful place.

He was very impressed by how much cheese the Swiss cheese makers could produce in their factory.

But when Jonni tried to ask, “Can I buy a chunk?” to the cheesemakers, the translation device said, “You both look drunk”

When Jonni tried to say, “Your cheese rocks”, the translation device said, “Your cheese smells like old socks” It got worse… when he tried to say, “That’s not what I mean,” the translation device said: “Your cats are mean!”

Which they were not!

Thankfully, the cheesemakers and the manager knew that the translation device was not working, and gave Jonni some of their nice cheese to try.

The following day, Jonni went to meet some cheesemakers in the mountains. They gave him a warm welcome and sang a traditional alpine song!

They showed Jonni how they made their alpine cheese. He found out that cheesemakers love making cheese and that Swiss cheese is one of the best.
The cheesemakers told Jonni that their village was about to hold its annual Fondue Festival and that he was welcome to take part as a special guest…

In Switzerland, people love sharing fondue, and the purpose of this festival was to award a prize to the most original fondue creation. There were four contestants taking part in the competition, as well as Jonni.

The first contestant was called Baroness Clara von Meltz. She lived in a luxorius Chalet and made cheese from her own Swiss cows.

The Baroness called her favourite cow Moo-tilda!

The second contestant was called Penny Pinkerton, and she had created a pink fondue because she loved the colour so much!

At home, her sofa was pink; her table was pink…everything was pink, pink, pink!

The third contestant was called Hazel Gearhart and she was a steampunk.

This is Hazel’s steampunk sitting room.

The fourth contestant was Milo Greenstone, who had created a vegan fondue. He liked everything to be as natural as possible

Everything in his house was made of natural materials, and even his television was powered by solar energy.

The fifth contestant was called Lukas Schneeberger, and he was a famous Swiss skier. He was very fast on his skis and always early for appointments!
The local newspaper was called “The
Yodel
Times” and this is how they reported the Fondue Festival…

The Annual Fondue Festival was underway in the Alps, and excitement was bubbling just like the cheese pots. The competition was fierce, but it didn’t go exactly as planned. First up was Baroness Clara von Meltz, who dazzled everyone with her jewellery and elegant presence. However, her fondue was too perfect - so perfect, in fact, that the judges discovered she had hired a chef from the nearby Hotel to prepare it for her. She was disqualified and left the crowd shocked and disappointed.
Next, Penny Pinkerton presented a fondue that was very pink. Her love for that colour could be seen in everything she owned,
and her fondue was no different. It was delicious, but so pink that it turned the judges' hands the same colour. While her fondue was tasty, it was just a bit too much for the judges, who found that too unusual.
Hazel Gearhart, the steam-punk contestant, wowed the crowd with her contraption that steamed her fondue to perfection - or so she thought. However, machine hissed and bubbled with excitement, but when the judges took their first bites, they found the cheese was undercooked and too runny. The fondue failed to cling to the bread, and despite the impressive technology, Hazel’s creation didn’t meet the mark.
Milo Greenstone, the environmentalist, entered the competition with a vegan fondue made from eco-friendly ingredients. While his effort was admirable, the fondue lacked the rich, cheesy flavor that everyone expected. It was healthy and green, but the judges agreed it needed a little more flavour to be considered a true winner.
Then came Lukas Schneeberger, the skiing champion. Determined to combine his love for skiing and fondue, Lukas skied down the slopes at top speed to make a dramatic entrance. However, he was so fast that he couldn’t stop in time and carried on down the hill as he whizzed past the judges. It turned
out Lukas could ski with lightning speed, but he couldn’t quite stop in time for the competition.
Finally, Jonni Greenbelt, the visitor to the village, stepped up with his fondue. Unlike the others, Jonni’s creation was magical. As he stirred, the fondue bubbled and swirled, and then - like something out of a fairy tale -it delivered itself in three perfect portions onto the judges’ plates. The judges were amazed, taking a bite of the creamy, delicious cheese. It was clear that Jonni had mastered the art of the perfect fondue, and with a cheer from the crowd, he was crowned the Fondue Festival Champion.

However, this was not the whole story ...

What really happened was that while Jonni was busy looking at Penelope Pinkerton’s pink creation, he forgot to turn down the heat down on his fondue.
The cheese made a big bubble and sort of exploded, sending portions of cheese into the air that landed into the judge’s bowls.

Jonni tried to explain using his translation device, but when he said, “I apologise, everyone,” the device translated it as, “Fondue is for everyone!”

This really impressed the three judges who gave Jonni Greenbelt first prize!...
A selection of Swiss Mountain cheese!

Jonni was able to fly back with his suitcases full of Swiss cheese!

When he returned to his farm shop, he found that Katherine had bought him a cheese humidor, so he could keep his cheese at the right temperature.
Jonni sent a text to Professor Bramble, to tell him about his Swiss Cheese adventure. Here is the text…
