SOUL MEETS SCRIPTURE CHIP’S PERSPECTIVE When I was 12, my family moved from the United States to Israel. It was a whirlwind — new smells, new pace, new culture, new language.

But one of the strangest adjustments came in a place I thought would feel familiar: worship.

Back in the States, I’d grown up singing all the classics: “Jesus, Lover of My Soul”, ”No Other Name”, and ”Holy and Anointed One.” In Israel, the name “Jesus” had been replaced with “Yeshua.”

Now, I knew that Yeshua was His Hebrew name. I got it — intellectually. But hearing it sung out loud felt… different. Almost like I was singing to someone else. My soul and my theology were bumping into each other — and it was disorienting.

That discomfort taught me something: when God invites us deeper into His story, it often touches something sacred — and that can feel strange at first. That’s exactly how many people feel when they first start asking questions about Israel.

WAIT… IS THIS STILL RELEVANT? If you’ve spent any time in the Bible, you’ve noticed it: Israel is everywhere. Genesis, Exodus, the Psalms, the Prophets, the Gospels, Acts, Romans, Revelation…

But in many modern churches — especially in the West — Israel is either reduced to a footnote or avoided entirely. “Too political.” “Too complicated.” “Not relevant anymore.”

Scripture doesn’t treat Israel like a side plot.

It treats Israel like the stage for the greatest story ever told.

So… why? Let’s go back to the beginning.

THE GOD WHO MAKES PROMISES In Genesis 12, God makes a life-altering promise to a man named Abram (later Abraham): “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great… and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Genesis 12:2–3 (NKJV) This wasn’t a temporary feel-good moment. It was a covenant — a binding, forever promise. And it included three things:

1. A PEOPLE Abraham’s descendants

2. A LAND The physical territory of Israel

3. A MISSION To bless all the families of the earth That promise is repeated to Isaac, to Jacob, to Moses, to David.

And God never breaks it. The story of the Bible is the story of God working through a very specific people — not to exclude the world, but to include it through them.

JESUS: FULFILLMENT, NOT REPLACEMENT Jesus didn’t come to cancel this story. He came to complete it.

He was born in Bethlehem — not Birmingham. Raised in a Jewish family. Attended synagogue. Celebrated Passover. Quoted the Hebrew Scriptures. Fulfilled Jewish prophecy. Wept over Jerusalem.

Even after His resurrection, He promised to return — not to Rome, or London, or New York, but to Jerusalem (see Zechariah 14:4).

Jesus didn’t come to cancel this story.

He came to complete it.

NOT A FOOTNOTE — A ROOT In Romans 11, Paul describes Israel as an olive tree. Gentile believers are like wild branches grafted in.

Romans 11:18 (NKJV) This is crucial: Gentile believers are not replacements.

They’re recipients.

They’ve been brought into the story — not written over it.

THE STORY ISN’T OVER The Bible doesn’t just look back at Israel — it points forward to her restoration. In Ezekiel 36–37, God promises to bring His people back to their land, give them a new heart, and pour out His Spirit.

We’ve seen this happening: • • •

In 1948, Israel became a nation again after nearly 2,000 years.

Hebrew, once nearly dead, is now a thriving national language.

Jewish people from all over the world continue to return home.

And spiritually? The veil is lifting.

WHAT EVEN IS REPLACEMENT THEOLOGY? Maybe you’ve never heard the term “replacement theology.” Maybe you’ve only come across it in a footnote, a sermon side comment, or a Bible college debate.

Even if you’ve never named it, you’ve probably felt its effects.

Replacement theology is the idea that the Church has taken Israel’s place in God’s plan — that because many Jewish people rejected Jesus, God “moved on” and now the Church is the new Israel.

It sounds tidy. Logical, even.

There’s just one major problem: It’s not what the Bible teaches.

Not even close.

THE BIBLICAL PROBLEM The Apostle Paul spends three full chapters in Romans — 9, 10, and 11 — wrestling with this very issue. His conclusion is loud and clear: “Has God cast away His people? Certainly not!”

In other words: Israel’s story isn’t over.

God hasn’t swapped His bride.

He’s expanded His family — not replaced it.

LET’S PUT IT THIS WAY...

Imagine you’re at a wedding. The groom, Josh (representing God), is standing at the altar. His bride, Judy (representing Israel), has been through some rough times. There’s history. Covenant. Promise.

Suddenly, Josh turns to the guests and says: “Hey everyone, this is Christy. She’s new, she’s lovely... and I’ve decided she’s going to replace Judy as my wife.

Effective immediately.”

Cue gasps.

Judy faints.

Christy looks horrified.

The flower girl starts crying.

Everyone’s thinking the same thing: You don’t replace your bride mid-ceremony and act like that’s normal.

That’s essentially what replacement theology suggests: that God ditched Judy and married Christy instead.

The Bible, however, paints a very different picture of God — a faithful Groom. A promise-keeper. One who doesn’t ghost His bride when she stumbles.

COVENANT DOESN’T EXPIRE When God made a covenant with Israel, it wasn’t a “see how it goes” deal. It was eternal.

“If My covenant is not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth, then I will cast away the descendants of Jacob…”

He tells Gentile believers not to get arrogant. ‘You’re grafted in,’ he says, ‘not replacing the tree — just becoming part of it.’ That changed everything for me. The Church isn’t Plan B. It’s part of God’s original plan — through Israel.”

WHERE DID THIS IDEA EVEN COME FROM? If replacement theology is so unbiblical, how did it become so mainstream?

In the early centuries of the Church, Gentile believers began to outnumber Jewish ones. As the Roman Empire persecuted Jews, church leaders distanced themselves from anything “Jewish.” The Passover became Easter. Shabbat was replaced with Sunday.

By the time of Augustine in the 4th century, replacement theology was baked into Church culture. And tragically, it laid the groundwork for centuries of Christian antisemitism — from crusades to pogroms, forced conversions to Holocaust-era complicity.

WHY THIS STILL MATTERS TODAY You might think: “Okay, but that was then. Surely no one still thinks this way now.”

Actually… they do.

Sometimes it’s overt.

More often, it’s subtle: • • •

Sermons that skip Israel’s role in Scripture.

Worship lyrics that remove Jewish context.

Christians who celebrate “the nations” but fall silent when Israel is mentioned.

And here’s why it matters: If we think God broke His promises to Israel, what makes us believe He’ll keep His promises to us?

In a conflict as emotionally charged as the Israeli–Palestinian one, truth is often the first casualty.

It’s hard to move forward when the past has been rewritten — or forgotten entirely. Sound bites dominate. Slogans shout louder than facts. And the result? Deep confusion.

So let’s ask a hard but honest question — one that few people are willing to explore: Where did the Palestinian identity actually come from?

Not where Palestinians live today.

Not what they believe politically.

But the historical roots of the name — and the narrative behind it.

A ROMAN INSULT THAT STUCK The year was 135 CE. After crushing the Bar Kokhba revolt — the third major Jewish uprising against Roman rule — Emperor Hadrian decided to erase all traces of Jewish identity from the land. His tactic? Renaming.

Judea became “Syria Palaestina”, deliberately echoing the Philistines — Israel’s ancient enemies.

It was an act of psychological warfare. An insult.

A calculated attempt to rewrite history.

But here’s what’s crucial: No distinct ethnic group called “Palestinians” emerged at that time.

In fact, not for many centuries.

WHO ARE THE PALESTINIANS?

SO… WHO ACTUALLY LIVED THERE? Over the next 1,800 years, the land passed through a revolving door of empires: Byzantines. Islamic Caliphates. Crusaders. Ottomans. British.

The population was diverse - including Jews, Christians, Arabs, Muslims, Druze and Armenians. But no one claimed the identity of “Palestinian” in a national or ethnic sense.

Strangely enough, before 1948, the term “Palestinian” was actually more associated with Jews than Arabs: • • •

The Palestine Post was a Jewish newspaper (later renamed The Jerusalem Post).

The Palestine Symphony Orchestra was founded by Jewish refugees and became the Israel Philharmonic.

British passports issued to Jews and Arabs alike in the region read: Palestinian.

THE RISE OF A MODERN IDENTITY The shift happened in the mid-20th century.

In 1964 — three years before Israel even entered the West Bank or Gaza — Yasser Arafat co-founded the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Its goal?

Not to create a Palestinian state alongside Israel… …but to replace Israel entirely.

This was not a movement rooted in ancient culture.

It was a political identity forged around a cause — primarily, opposition to Israel.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? There are towns called Palestine in Texas, Illinois, and even the Channel Islands. None of them are controversial.

So why does this name carry such explosive weight in the Middle East? Because in this context, “Palestinian” has become a symbol. Of displacement. Of injustice. Of resistance.

And in some cases — of political warfare.

Language isn’t neutral. It’s loaded.

That’s why we need historical clarity — not just sympathy.

Truth doesn’t erase compassion. But it does give us a better place to begin.

In the last chapter, we looked at the historical formation of the Palestinian identity.

Now it’s time to tackle what that identity has become in the modern global imagination — a rallying cry, a cause, a controversy that dominates headlines and divides churches.

But here’s the key question: Why does the Palestinian cause get more international attention than almost any other conflict in the world?

A GLOBAL CAUSE WITH UNMATCHED ENDURANCE There are millions of refugees in the world today — from Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Sudan, and many other places. Most are supported with the goal of resettlement or reintegration.

But Palestinian refugees are the only group whose refugee status is passed down generationally — even to those born in other nations.

Why? A big part of the reason is UNRWA — a special UN agency created just for Palestinian refugees. Unlike the UNHCR, which handles every other refugee crisis with the goal of resolving it, UNRWA maintains the issue… indefinitely.

DOUBLE STANDARDS AND DEAFENING SILENCE In 2023 alone, the United Nations passed over 15 resolutions against Israel — more than against all other nations combined.

Why aren’t the resolutions condemning: • • •

Iran’s executions and oppression of women?

China’s persecution of Uyghur Muslims?

Syria’s mass killings of its own citizens?

Many NGOs and “justice” campaigns are quick to rally against Israel — and slow to speak out anywhere else.

Why? Some of it is political convenience. Some of it is ignorance.

But some of it is plain old-fashioned antisemitism — rebranded for modern audiences.

OCCUPATION, APARTHEID, AND OTHER BUZZWORDS Let’s talk language.

The Palestinian cause is often defended with emotionally charged terms like: “Apartheid” “Colonialism” “Genocide” But do those labels actually fit?

• Apartheid?

Arab citizens of Israel vote, hold passports, serve in Parliament, and sit on the Supreme Court.

• Colonialism?

Jews have lived continuously in the land of Israel for over 3,000 years. You can’t colonize your own homeland.

• Genocide?

The Palestinian population has actually grown dramatically since 1948.

Words matter.

And when they’re misused, they don’t just cloud the truth — they devalue real suffering elsewhere.

COMPASSION WITHOUT COMPROMISE So, does that mean we ignore Palestinian pain? Absolutely not.

True Christian love cares deeply for every human being — Jew, Arab, atheist, or otherwise. However, love must be anchored in truth.

12 DAY WAR: ISRAEL–IRAN WAR (JUNE 13–24, 2025) For the first time in history, Israel and Iran went to war with each other directly. What had been years of threats and proxy battles suddenly erupted into nearly two weeks of nonstop bombardment.

Iran launched more than 550 ballistic missiles and over 1,000 attack drones toward Israel during this short but intense conflict — leaving behind shattered homes, sleepless nights, and a shaken nation.

For centuries, Persia (what we now know as Iran) maintained friendly relations with the Jewish people. In fact, it was Persian kings who once gave refuge to the exiles of Israel and even helped rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. As the book of Isaiah records about King Cyrus of Persia: “He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please; he will say of Jerusalem, ‘Let it be rebuilt,’ and of the temple, ‘Let its foundations be laid’.”

Isaiah 44:28 (NIV) Biblically and historically, Israel and Persia often walked in partnership — right up until recent decades.

But in the past 50 years, everything has changed. Today, the Iranian regime is one of Israel’s most vocal enemies. Their leaders have openly declared their goal: to develop nuclear weapons and to use them in their mission to wipe Israel off the map. Intelligence communities — both Israeli and allied — confirm that Iran continues to pursue this path. The prospect of further conflict remains very real.

It’s important to remember: Israel’s battle is not with the Iranian people. The true victims of the regime’s cruelty are often their own citizens, especially women, who suffer under brutal repression and crimes against humanity. The nation of Israel holds out hope that one day the friendship between these two ancient peoples might be restored.

We’ve explored what the media says about Israel…

What politics say…

What about what God says?

Because if we’re serious about following Jesus, we can’t just inherit our worldview from TikTok theologians or headline theology.

We need to go back to the Scriptures — and to the heart of God. So let’s talk about Israel.

Not as a modern nation.

Not as a social media hashtag.

But as the people God chose for Himself.

THE COVENANT STILL STANDS One of the most common misunderstandings in the Church is the idea that God has moved on from Israel. That the Church is now the “New Israel.” That the Old Testament promises were temporary — conditional, even disposable.

But the Bible paints a different picture.

Jesus wasn’t a generic “Middle Eastern teacher.”

He was born Jewish.

He lived Jewish.

He taught in synagogues, quoted the Torah, celebrated the feasts, and fulfilled the prophecies.

To understand who Jesus is — we need to understand where He came from.

To love Jesus fully — is to love His people deeply.

When the Church disconnects Jesus from His Jewish roots, we don’t just lose historical context.

We lose spiritual clarity.

THE HEADLINES NEVER STOP It doesn’t matter what part of the world you live in — chances are, you’ve seen Israel in the news recently. Rocket attacks. UN debates.

Campus protests. Security crackdowns. Peace talks. War threats.

And yet… Israel is smaller than Wales. It has no oil. It’s surrounded by 22 hostile nations. It’s just one country out of nearly 200 on the planet.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING Many Christians read the New Testament and come away thinking: • • •

It sounds spiritual.

It feels inclusive. However, it’s theologically inaccurate — and spiritually dangerous.

JESUS CAME FIRST FOR ISRAEL When Jesus began His earthly ministry, He made this clear: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

He was born into the line of David.

He taught from the Torah.

He celebrated the Jewish feasts.

He wept over Jerusalem.

Jesus wasn’t just a Jew. He was — and is — the Jewish Messiah.

PAUL’S PASSION: FOR THE GENTILES AND THE JEWS The Apostle Paul is known as the missionary to the nations. But his heart for his own people never faded.

Romans 9:2–3 That’s not apathy. That’s agony.

Paul wasn’t content with saving the world if it meant losing Israel.

THE OLIVE TREE — NOT A NEW PLANT In Romans 11, as we have seen earlier in chapter 1, Paul uses a vivid image to describe how Jews and Gentiles relate to God’s covenant: A cultivated olive tree.

The wild branches = Gentile believers, grafted in by faith.

Ephesians 2:14 (NIV) These passages aren’t denying Jewish identity — they’re affirming salvation equality.

We are all saved by grace — not race.

But that doesn’t mean we become the same.

Diversity remains. Roles remain. God’s promises remain.

Paul never stopped identifying as Jewish — even as he preached to the Gentiles.

Jesus didn’t stop being Jewish when He rose from the dead.

THE END OF THE STORY — STILL JEWISH Some think Israel was only important in the Old Testament.

But the Bible doesn’t end in Rome, or Athens, or even Heaven…

It ends in Jerusalem.

“Then I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven…”

Revelation 21:2 (NIV) That’s not a coincidence. It’s a culmination.

The story that started with Abraham… continues in Jesus… and finishes with a Jewish Messiah reigning from Jerusalem.

A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

CHIP’S PERSPECTIVE In September 2024, I was in Israel filming with the Maoz media team — documenting stories of faith, resilience, and revival. Worship artists. Pastors. Volunteers on the border of Gaza. All of them living out the Gospel in one of the most spiritually charged places on earth.

My dad, who still lives in Jerusalem, drove me around to the different shoots. One day, we arrived at a place that hit harder than I ever expected: Hostage Square in Tel Aviv.

It’s not an official memorial — but it might as well be. It’s where families of hostages gather daily. Where grief is public, raw, and unfiltered. There’s a giant screen that once showed the faces of those taken on October 7th. A table laid out with place settings for every hostage. A real-life replica of a Hamas terror tunnel, where visitors walk through and hear recorded bombs exploding overhead. And in the center of it all: a piano.

That piano belonged to one of the hostages. Anyone is allowed to play it — but there’s a note: “Please play on behalf of their release.”

And above the keys, three words are carved into the wood: “You are not alone.”

A SOUNDTRACK OF SORROW That day was searing hot. But the heat wasn’t the hardest part — it was the sound. Wailing. Deep, body-wracking grief, echoing across the square.

One young man stood out. He was sobbing so loudly that our filming had to pause more than once. His name, I later learned, was Ori — which means “My light” in Hebrew. At one point, I was reading Isaiah 40:1 and Romans 12:15 on camera — literally quoting, “Comfort My people… Mourn with those who mourn” — and Ori’s cries were the background music.

It was gut-wrenching.

And holy.

While I was prepping to film at the piano, my dad played a few notes to hold the spot. When I finally sat down, I started playing a melody I had written in response to October 7th — a song called “Just Breathe.”

I didn’t sing. I just played.

A DREAM, A MELODY, AND A MIRACLE Midway through the song, Ori appeared beside me. Desperate.

Frantic. Saying something over and over in Hebrew — but I couldn’t understand. I tried to stay composed for the camera, assuming he wanted to interrupt or insert himself.

Then the camera guy stopped recording and looked me in the eye: “Do you know what he was saying?”

“No…” “He says he’s seen you before. In a dream.

And he’s heard that melody in his dreams too.”

I froze. Could it be?

I still wasn’t sure what to do. But then a thought hit me like lightning: If God gave this man a dream about me, the least I can do is hug him… and tell him that Jesus loves him.

So that’s what I did.

“YESHUA OHEV OTCHA” I walked over and wrapped my arms around Ori. He immediately collapsed into sobs. I looked into his eyes and said the only Hebrew I knew for that moment: “Yeshua ohev otcha.”

(Jesus loves you.)

He looked at me and cried out, “Yes! You are Jesus! You are Jesus!”

“No,” I whispered, “I’m not. But He loves you. So much.”

And then, right there — in the middle of grief and confusion and tears — Ori began to pour out his heart. He told me about his trauma, about a moment as a child when he’d heard his mother call his father “the devil.” How he had turned away from God. But now, something in his soul was breaking open. Something real.

I led him in the sinner’s prayer, word by word. Slowly. Intentionally.

With sincerity and power. When we finished, we said it together: “B’shem Yeshua HaMashiach. Amen.”

And you might be the melody they’ve been hearing all along.
