Avening Primary School

A new term means new topics for each class to get their teeth into. The Kestrels Class (Y1/2) will be keeping fit with their term topic ‘I like to move it’, while the Hawks class (Y3/4) will be exploring ‘Rivers and Mountains’ with an expedition following the Avon stream in Cherington all the way to the River Severn at the end of January.

A sporty start to the New Year! 2016 has started on a healthy note at Avening School with a swimming gala and gymnastics event in the very first week of term. Not only did our school come third place overall in the gala, our swimmers performed fantastically individually.

While the Hawks get their feet wet, the Owls will be journeying to a warmer climate in their term topic ‘Hola Mexico’! Our weekly pre-school session Fledglings starts again this month with a change of day – now Monday afternoons each week from 2-3pm. If you would like more information on this please contact the school office.

Pupils from the Hawks class (Y3/4) displayed their gymnastics skills at SWR alongside other local primary schools. More of our Avening sports stars will be competing at the Sports Hall Athletics final later in the month at Kingshill School. January is always an exciting time for members of our school choir as the annual Young Voices concert takes place. Held at Birmingham NEC, the concert draws in schools from miles around, with thousands of children taking part each night. This year the choir sang an eclectic mix of songs ranging from soul classics to a Madness medley. The

children (from Y4, 5 & 6) behaved impeccably during the long afternoon rehearsal and sang sensationally on the night, making the whole school very proud.

The weather may have been wet and wild recently but that hasn’t stopped children enjoying the learning garden which now has its own fire pit and cloth canopies. We look forward to the arrival of spring and spending more time developing this wonderful outdoor classroom. Jane Rushton Headteacher

Dear Readers, The number of “Happy New Year” messages in this month’s Advertiser has left me reeling, even though it now seems quite a long time since New Year rolled around – so how about a “Happy Valentine’s Day” message from me, instead? I dare to be different and I also promise not to refer to the weather at all in this brief column. (Although I’m itching to.)

sold the winning ticket for the main prize myself, to Mr Healy of West Street. Since he bought quite a few tickets it was wonderful to be able to repay his generosity by phoning him about winning the hamper, and we hope it enhanced his Christmas. Many thanks to Lion Paul Stead and all the volunteers and ticket buyers – and thanks too to Dave at the Priory for letting us have a rowdy and enjoyable draw, which he was also kind enough to help us with.

The Lion’s Raffle was splendidly supported in December – many, many thanks – and I’m delighted to be able to boast that I

It’s also nice in this Advertiser to be able to print the news of all the many other fundraising incentives around the town in

Lions Den the last few months, including an article from our friends working on the Kaiaf Health Centre and many messages of thanks for your generosity from Christian Aid, the Fire Station, the Christmas in Tetbury committee and many more. Our community really is a very generous one. Will it strain your generosity in late February then, when we Lions assemble outside Tesco to try and rake in the dough for the wonderful Marie Curie group? Perhaps, but I hope not. If it does, as usual please do not feel compelled to give if you can’t – just say hello and have a laugh at the silly soand-so’s in the big yellow hats. This month it’s also nice to mention Wacky Races, and make a proclamation about how we’re going to focus ourselves until the end of our Lion’s Centennial year. Please have a read of the “Bluebell” article to see if you think we’re on the right track. On the social side we’ve had a number of splendid dinners in the last weeks, including one at the Snooty which Lion Jayne Fewell didn’t attend. Why? Well, she was busy manning the tombola at St Mary’s CE VA Primary School, bless her. Such dedication deserves mention – and so does the fact that we rallied around to help out by eating an extra dessert on her behalf. Thank you very much Jayne and I shall buy you that Lion President’s Pint I owe you when I see you next, I promise.

Computer Advice 2016 – The scams continue! As it is my first editorial of the New Year, may I wish you a Happy and Healthy one? Over the coming year I will try to offer you more useful advice to keep your computer running well and keep the scams at bay.

Windows 10 privacy Some additional settings from those I have mentioned previously are worth a look. In the general privacy settings, it might be worth turning off the advertising ID that selects ads for you. Cortana [the built in assistant] keeps track of your data to help her understand what your interests are, so if this bothers you, you can limit the data she has access to. Do also check your Wi-Fi sense settings as you may be sharing your own

network with your friends without realising it! For additional options, get in touch. If you have any queries or would like to book your PC in for a security check or an annual service: Please contact Nic on 01666 502067, mail@ inghamassociates.com or go to www. tetburycomputershop.co.uk INGHAM ASSOCIATES THE TETBURY COMPUTER SHOP Now in my 28th year of Trading

Talking of scams, the threat from “ransomware” has not diminished. This can encrypt all your data on your computer then blackmail you in to paying for a decryption key to recover it, usually in Bit coins. This particularly nasty software is usually spread via a web link or email attachment, either as a PDF or office file. There is only one way to recover your data without paying up and that is to use your backup, which you are doing regularly aren’t you? Even if you are, do not leave your backup drive connected to your computer all the time, as the Trojan will encrypt that too! In fact in will encrypt all data connected to your PC and on your network. This can be really serious to anyone that connects to another PC for home or office use, even if you only share printers. Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive are also vulnerable. Most antivirus software will not detect it until it is too late, so do be super-vigilant when opening attachments, and only open them if you are certain you are expecting it and you really need the data.

If you are not regularly backing up, please do take a moment to copy your important stuff to a USB stick or external drive. Let me know if you need a hand with this or some software to synchronise your backup so that you only need to make a couple of mouse clicks to keep it up to date. Tetbury in Bloom In the mild mid-winter Walking around Tetbury during the Christmas break, I was surprised to see kniphofia – “Tetbury Torch” – in flower in the fire station and Priory Road flowerbeds, roses outside the Brewery Lane public conveniences, blossom emerging on some of the Pyrus Chanticleer (ornamental pear tree) screening the West Street car park and narcissus in full flower on the Bath Road. We have witnessed all four seasons all at the same time! “Tetbury Torch” is an unusual, medium-

sized, clump forming, deciduous perennial, with deep green, grass-like leaves; its apricot and yellow pokers usually flower in late summer and early autumn! Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer is amongst the first to come into leaf in the spring, when its leaves emerge together with a pretty white flower. Regardless of the unseasonable weather and the heralded cold-snap to come, the Tetbury in Bloom team are out and about tending to the floral displays to ensure that they look their best. It is important to keep on top of things. The main borders have been tidied and cleared of leaves. I look forward to seeing what delights are revealed in the weeks and months to come. As you would expect with just a few months to go, preparations are well underway for the fifth running of the Tetbury Lion’s Wacky Races soapbox derby, which will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, the 2nd May. Last year saw many and varied entries ranging from a galleon made from a garden shed, a steam engine, a carrot, a giant cream egg and the Jamaican Bobsleigh team to name but a few. We anticipate similar creative entries this year, so if you are considering an entry, now is the time to start planning and putting a few ideas together - leaving plenty of time to really test the vehicle before race day.

Wacky Races 2016

The toughest part of the course is the hairpin bend by the Royal Oak, and many a wheel has either come adrift or broken at this point so give them important consideration in your construction. All vehicles taking part in the 2016 event MUST comply with the specfications as detailed in the rules, which are available on www.tetburywackyraces.co.uk and these will be enforced on the day in the pre-race inspection, with any infringement possibly leading to disqualification. No sharp edges will be allowed, substantial roll bars must be fitted and there must be a tow hook on the front.

speeds approaching 30 mph at the bottom of The Chipping, this is not just a speed trial. The shield everyone wants to see awarded is the one that goes to the Wackiest racing vehicle, with fun bodywork and a support team in appropriate costume. Who can forget the outstanding 2015 winning team, who drove a giant cream egg with Willy Wonka and a couple of Oompa-Loompas in support? All available members of the Lions Club will be on duty on race day, as well as helpers from other organisations, as the event is now established as a primary fundraising event not just for the Club but also the town. To this end we rely on your generosity so that we can continue to benefit organisations, clubs, groups and individuals in Tetbury. There are many sponsorship opportunities ranging from taking an advert in the programme, placing a banner on the crowd control barriers near the finish line or just a simple donation. If you wish to take up a sponsorship opportunity or get involved in some way, please call Ken White on 01666 504189 for further details.

While shields will be awarded to the fastest adult and fastest youth entry, it is important to note that this remains both a family fun day out and a major fundraising day, so even though on average entries reach

Tetbury Camera Club Our meeting in midNovember consisted of a presentation by Shaun Boycott-Taylor. Shaun is an amateur wildlife and landscape photographer, based in Bristol. He started his presentation by showing photographs of the location in which he takes many of his pictures. As well as showing the hides he uses, he described the techniques he uses to attract the birds and to get them into the positions suitable for photography. From this interesting and useful information, he went on to show many excellent photographs of birds. These ranged from the common or garden birds found in these parts to more exotic species. (See his website http://www. wildlifeandlandscapes.co.uk) The next meeting saw our third Open Competition of the season and we were pleased to welcome Club member Howard Warren to judge our efforts. Howard’s good humour was to the fore as always, accompanied by his insightful, constructive, and cogent comments. As ever, it was an enjoyable and informative evening and especially so for John

Shepherd and Sandie Cox, who managed first places in their categories. This was followed by our Winter Competitions, judged by local photographer Bob Ryan. Bob started by explaining the criteria he used to review the entries and then proceeded to provide a comprehensive analysis of all of the entries, laced with humour. One of the categories

For the following meeting, there were two separate sessions. First we were treated to very interesting explanations from five members who had been asked to elaborate on some of their images which had done well in recent competitions. The explanations included the setting, lighting, camera settings, problems encountered (and their solutions) and post processing. Of particular interest was an image of “Three Ballerinas” by Vince Pycroft, using a technique which is explained on the Club website The second part of the evening was a “Photographers’ Question Time” when a panel of members answered ten questions which had been submitted by other members prior to the evening. This session seemed to be well received - but only time will tell!

for the competition was ‘Creative’. This was chosen, not without some trepidation, as an antidote to the criticism sometimes made that club photography is rather formulaic. In the event, there need have been no concern because the entries were numerous and all adventurous; one of the entries which did well, ‘Twinkle Toes’ by John Jennings, is reproduced here.

If you wish to improve your photographic skills (or just enjoy looking at pictures) why not come along to a meeting? Please feel free to visit as a guest at some of our meetings and see what goes on, hopefully with a view to becoming a member. Tetbury Camera Club meets at 7.30 pm on Tuesday evenings at the Priory Inn, Tetbury. We are a very friendly group and anybody with an interest in photography will be very welcome to visit and get an idea of our activities and meet club members. The collection taken at Tesco in December amounted to £495 so thank you…

The London Marathon is perhaps the best known of all the marathons and places to run in it are very hard to come by. However, we have managed to secure a place for the fastest Christian Aid runner in the West, none other than Tetbury’s own Eileen Hodgson, to run for the charity.

The well-seasoned, sustainably forested wood burns at temperatures up to 400° centigrade and the Italian oven’s internal dome reflects heat onto the top of the pizzas, acting like a natural convection oven and simultaneously replacing the heat lost in the oven floor through cooking.

No thanks for the Memories! An engine overhead cut out. A silence followed. Then a devastating explosion. Wars speed up the invention of new weapons such as the German V- series, whose development was unfolded skilfully to us by Dr Bill Affleck on the 19th of November. Bill explained that although the unmanned V1 ‘Doodle Bug’ flying bomb was first flown in 1942, intensive Allied bombing retarded further use until June 1944. Intrinsically inaccurate because of limited control systems, only a third of the 7,500 aimed mainly at the London area in the following months reached their target. Others were shot down or deflected.

outside television broadcasting in Northern Ireland in 1960. He relayed the trials and tribulations he had faced and overcome as a producer as he progressed through the BBC. In an amusing and self-effacing way, often embellished with Irish overtones, he explained how programmes ranging from football matches to funerals were recorded, revealing some of the inevitable mishaps which were carefully edited out before transmission. After a two-year period as Director General of broadcasting in Malawi, he returned

Probus to the BBC, but eventually moved on to be the chief executive of a commercial broadcasting company. But both he and we had enjoyed his time with the BBC. Our year ended with a talk to members, guests and their ladies on the 17th of December by Philip Taubenheim of Wotton Auctions. Giving a light-hearted account of how he became involved in auctions, Philip recounted how he had trained and then developed a small sale room in Wotton into the very active business it is today. Commenting on articles brought to the meeting for valuation, he explained how different factors could change the demand for sale items and stressed how internet bidding was now increasingly common, even in small local auctions.

The V2 fully-fledged rocket-bomb which followed in September 1944 was often fired from mobile launch pads and just over 3,000 were used until March 1945, many reaching the London area. Both weapons caused thousands of deaths and widespread damage. Fortunately the Allied invasion prevented Germany from using its V3 longrange supergun, which could have reduced London to rubble. For those who had endured the V1’s and V2’s, that was a blessing.

This placed a heavy demand on auction companies beforehand for detailed information. Indeed, auctions could end with no buyers in the room, only a computer screen recording incoming bids. His wide-ranging and entertaining talk ended another successful year, but we have already started our 2016 programme. We have room for new members, who will be made very welcome – just ring me for details.

Our talk on the 3rd of December was very different. David Hannan described his move from the academic world into CL Tetbury Advertiser Ad 21-1-16_Layout 1 21/01/2016 14:29 Page 1

Mayor’s Report I hope that you have all had a good Christmas? It seems an awful lot of work and hype sometimes, for such a short space of time - and I can’t help wondering if the true meaning of Christmas can somehow get lost amongst the tinsel and mountains of food! However, when I visited the shops before Christmas with Peter Dauntsey our Town Crier, the general feeling was a very happy one and the shop keepers were very positive. There have been some lovely services and I always enjoy the Christmas Carols both at the Goods Shed and St. Mary’s Church – and a wonderful sense of peace

when entering these places for the Carol Services. The Christmas Lights also looked even better this year, with more lamp posts lit and trees dripping with lights. Thank you Tetbury in Bloom - it has looked lovely. And have you seen our new signs as you enter Tetbury? We felt they were long overdue for a re-fit and we will spruce the pots up for the flowers soon too, so that it will give a lovely warm welcoming feel to the town for all our visitors and friends. Can I ask you all if you use the re-cycling at Tesco Car Park? If the bins are full please do not leave your recycling on the ground because it will not be recycled (it will end up in land fill) - and that totally defeats the object. If you have any concerns about rubbish being left round the bins please let us know at the TTC offices and we will take action.

I have just heard the news that The Priory Nursing Home is to close on the 31st March and our hearts and thoughts go out to the poor resident’s and their families, who have to find new accommodation for them. These are very elderly people - one is 103 years old - and one wonders how they will cope with the move. I’m also very sad for the thirty-four staff, who have been loyal workers at The Priory for many years. They must be feeling totally devastated. If anyone knows or has job vacancies please don’t hesitate to let the staff know? They need all the help they can get. If you have any vacancies you can get the information to them via me or Cllr Kevin Painter. And finally I should like to leave you with the following: “Looking back on the months gone by As a New Year starts and an old one ends We contemplate what brought us joy, And we think of our loved ones and our friends.” and for those who are no longer with us: “Recalling all the happy times, Remembering how they have enriched our lives, We reflect upon who and what really counts, As the fresh and bright New Year arrives.”

Puddle Ducks Welcome to Puddle Ducks 2016, where things are as busy as ever! The children were keen to come back and tell us all about the exciting time they had enjoyed over Christmas, the gifts they received and places they had been. January sees us begin our journey through letters and sounds. Each week we will focus on a phonetic sound, following the jolly phonics programme, and a topic relating to the sound with activities planned to encourage development across all seven areas of learning. We have so far learnt about “S for Space” (the room has been decorated with sparkly stars and we have made our bodies into rockets zooming to the moon) and “A for Animals” (including a visit from Bumble the dog and the animal hokey-cokey!) At this time we also begin our afternoon sessions especially for those children who will be moving to primary school in September. It is a slightly more structured time than our morning sessions and gives the children a taste of what is to come. We practice the all-important getting changed for PE and have fun in our games lessons, then finish off with numeracy games and mark-making activities. Our belief is

that children learn best whilst enjoying themselves so these afternoons are planned with this in mind. Afternoons are always fun and have proved very successful in previous years. We also have several trips to St. Mary’s School planned for the coming weeks and months which also works well when preparing the children for their transition later in the year. We will welcome members of the school staff to visit us on occasions, too. Puddle Ducks is to be found at the back of the Dolphin Hall where we run from 9.15am12.15pm each weekday during term-time with an optional lunch club until 1.15pm each day. Our pre-school afternoons are held on Monday or Thursday afternoons until 2.45pm from January-July.

what we can offer you, or if you are looking for a setting for September, please do contact Catherine Chidley on 01666 504257 who would be pleased to give you further information and arrange a visit during a session. Our Ducklings toddler group is now running again on a Friday afternoon from 1.30-2.45 in the main hall with Catherine and Pat (please knock loudly on the side door) and is proud to be a member of the Tetbury Toddler Alliance and following the Tetbury Toddler Golden Rules! The New Year got off to an exciting start at St. Mary’s CE VA Primary School. Sixty of our Key Stage 2 children learnt songs over the Autumn Term and in January performed at a huge concert involving over 6,000 children. Zoe, Jess and Aleesha have written about the experience: “On the 11th January some of the Year 4, 5 and 6 children took part in ‘Young Voices’

in Birmingham. There were over 6,000 children singing in the Genting Arena. We had three guests: Tom Billington, Lauren Wright and ‘Beatbox Collective’! Tom Billington sang three songs; one of the songs was his new song ‘Hyper’. Lauren Wright sang the rugby anthem and two other songs. ‘Beatbox Collective’ taught us how to beatbox.

This year it was the 20th anniversary of Young Voices and as it was a special year, everyone wore glow-in-the-dark t-shirts. We raised money for disabled people

Tetbury & District Footpath Group Although the summer of 2015 was very hard to find at times, the Footpath Group had a very successful season and didn’t cancel any walks due to bad weather – although one was altered to be a very short walk along the railway line and through Preston Park, followed by coffee at a local cafe!

Our 2016 season starts the first week in April, and ends the last week in October; our walks are varied in starting times, distance, degree of difficulty and location. We always walk on a Tuesday but when, where and how difficult the walks are depend on the leader. All walks begin in the long stay car park but some require cars to take the walkers to the start of the walk – and of course, to get us home again! Although the distances range from three to eight miles, the average is about five to five and a half miles and the degree of difficulty always clearly given in the calendar of walks, which is distributed at the beginning

and in the middle of the walking season. Some years ago the Footpath Group published a walks book (Country Walks Around Tetbury) and, as this is now somewhat out of date, we’ve recently been working on a new folder to include some of the old favourites and some new walks. This will be in an entirely different format with the walks being on individual laminated sheets which will include the route, a map and also information about landmarks or areas of historical interest on the way. It is planned that the first batch of new walks’ sheets will be published during the next walking season and that extra walks will be added from time to time. The sheets will be on sale from the TIC and other retailers. In 2015 a Walking Weekend Away was organised; it was held in Devon in June and was voted a great success by all who took part. All our members agree that we have a truly enjoyable time meeting up and walking local and not-so-local footpaths and routes – there is always a meeting of old friends and making new friends and, of course, lots of chat on the way. If you feel you would like to join us for the next season you would be made extremely welcome (our subscription fees are a very reasonable £6 per person, £10 per couple) and you would also be very welcome at our Annual General Meeting which will be held at the Dolphins Hall on Thursday 25th February, 2016 at 7.30 pm. Avening WI Since our last report written in November for the December edition of the Advertiser there seems to be plenty of catching up to do! Unfortunately we lost or skittles match in the final of the Plate Competition but our opposition – from Sandhurst WI - were such a pleasant group of ladies we are hoping to arrange a friendly match with them in the near future. We were lucky with the weather for our Christmas shopping trip to Cardiff, missing the almost constant rain we had this autumn. After our brief AGM at our November meeting, Tim Mayo gave us a hilarious talk entitled ‘There is nothing like a Dame’. After giving us a brief history of pantomime, he eventually ended up dressed in his dame costume complete with wig and make-up and posing for lots of photographs! At our Christmas party in December we made paper stars (spotted at our excellent Christmas lunch at the Snooty Fox) and had some fun competitions including CotswoldFitForYou_A5Flyer_IndoorBootCamp_v1.0 cheese identifying! Our “Bring and Share”

We had good seats for the County Carol Concert in Cheltenham Town Hall, front row of the balcony, and Tetbury minibus to whisk us home with no fog frost or snow for the journey! We catered for two funerals in December, one of which was for our old president Georgie Edmunds who served in that role for 18 consecutive years. She was 101 years old and had been cared for at Ilsom House for many years. supper was also well up to our standard, with an amazing selection of finger food accompanied by wine and soft drinks. Vouchers were awarded to the annual winners of our “Flower of the Month” competitions. They were Maisie Stanton, Yvonne Crew and Mary Uzzell. At the end of the party Secret Santa gifts were exchanged. 250208 JS Painters & Decorators

Now we look forward to 2016. We have an interesting programme starting with one of our own members, Di Wall, talking about Victorian childhood. No doubt there will be many unseasonal flowers brought along for our competition! Shirley Hand Avening WI

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year in our first article of 2016? One of our last jobs which we undertook at the end of 2015 was the planting of bulbs through the walkway to The Station Yard Car Park from Herd Lane and I would like to thank Keith & Susan Leaver of The Tetbury Tailor who generously sponsored this, and Feoffee Will Cook for co-ordinating the volunteer planters. We are looking forward to another busy year in the town and some

of the areas we plan to be working on include: • Cutwell Green – laying of new curb edgings • Chipping Steps – repair works • Wooden Bridge from Berkeley Wood to The Railway Line – work on the steps As the spring approaches and the weather improves, can I please ask for the community’s co-operation in 2016 when using the Feoffee ‘Open Spaces’ around town and particularly the Railway Line, Preston Park and Herd Lane? Firstly, let’s keep these areas free of ‘dog mess’, bins and bags are provided and these areas are provided and maintained for the use of our entire community – including children – and we are all aware of the health risks and how unpleasant this can be if not removed. These areas are a great asset to the town

Finally, The Feoffees are very sorry to hear the news that the town is to lose The Priory Nursing Home, such an important part of our community, where so many of our local residents have lived and live. If you would like to know more about the work we do in the town and the type of grants and support available, please do not hesitate to contact us. The final event of 2015 was our annual Carols in the Goods Shed, heralding in Christmas and putting us all in a festive mood for the oncoming celebrations. Around two hundred people filled the Shed and there was a lovely atmosphere, with our hallmark improvised decorations and recycled lights. Brecon Quaddy introduced the programme and the Avening band accompanied all the carols. Nicola Clark and Heather Bristow sang beautifully accompanied by Richard Lloyd on the keyboard. Poppy, the vicar from St Marys’ Church lead the prayers and Carolyn recited a lovely passage from St Luke. There was an amazing atmosphere and it was such a mild evening that we were able to party outside, with our homemade mince pipes and mulled wine. I would like to thank all the helpers who made mince pies for the event, and Jill Dodge and her team for making the shed look so magical. This will be our last Christmas in the rather rough-and-ready stable-like setting of the old Goods Shed and it’s thrilling to realize that by this time next year we should have, or at least be close to having, a resplendently restored building all ready for use, with a programme of events ready to roll off the blocks. How’s that for a New Year’s Resolution? On New Year’s Day we had our customary walk along the old railway line, from the

Goods Shed to the Trouble House - and this year we were able to walk the full length of the line by kind permission of Mike Tucker and the Duchy. Thanks to Graham Cleaver for helping me to clear the path the day before. (The weather was not so kind that afternoon and we ended up like two drowned rats!)

Tetbury Rail Lands Trust welcome some really good donations of quality items that would be fun for Jill to sell. The total profit goes to the shed, so it is a way of swapping unwanted goods for a part of our vision for this town. Please look out for our forthcoming events, and if you would like to get involved please ring me on 01666502877 or go to our website www. tetburyraillands.com. Thank you all for your continued support. William Cook, Tetbury Rail Lands Trust

The repairs to the outside cattle loading bay are going well, with the posts fitted and our attention turning to the top surface. We are confident the outside platform should be finished by early spring. Meanwhile the final drawing and specifications for the conversion should be ready to go out to tender by the end of this month, so hopefully it will not be long before work commences. We have enough money for the main build but are continuing to fundraise for all the “bells and whistles” on our wish list, such as the staged collapsible seating and lighting. Our monthly Boot Sales are still doing well and we intend to continue holding them until work actually starts, to add as much money as possible to our funds. We would

Police stress that such road signs are positioned in order to improve safety for all road users and to assist the free flow of traffic through the town. Please take a moment to consider the possible consequences of contravening such a road sign and the impact on the local community. The possible consequences for the driver of the vehicle include three points on their licence and a £100 fine; alternatively the matter could be referred to the Courts where the fine could be greater. There have been no accidents at either location but several near-misses have occurred. Police will deal robustly with any drivers caught offending and locals have also been

urged to name and shame the local culprits to Police, who will act appropriately. Training to join the “Community Speed Watch Scheme” has been offered to residents to empower them to deal with the issue - and the police are urging drivers to adhere to traffic regulations before someone is seriously injured. A wet and cold start to 2016 has led to a number of cancelled fixtures - however, our dedicated teams have continued to train when possible, showing improvement even on the high standards produced in 2015. Both the players and our strong team of qualified coaches are looking forward to the second half of the season and all the excitement it will bring. Our coaches continue to provide our young players with the opportunity to develop the skills and techniques necessary, yet never set unrealistic expectations; they understand individual players and the areas

in which they require support and the best methods for helping them develop and learn. With the coaching team at Tetbury Town FC continually expanding, we work closely with The FA to ensure we meet the expectations of a Charter Standard Club. Two of our coaches are in the process of adding to their skills by completing their Level 1 and Level 2 coaching certificates. We recently purchased eight easy to assemble pop-up training goals which allow more realistic small sided games in training. Thank you to The Jack Lane Trust for the grant to allow us to do this. The boys and girls are enjoying the small-sided games and already finishing skills have improved! Plans are in place for the refurbishment of our clubhouse at the Recreation Ground. It

Tetbury Town FC is important we continue to provide a safe environment for our young players to learn in and we are excited by the positive affect this project will have. Don’t forget you can continue to support Tetbury Town FC by raising money when you shop online. Christmas in Tetbury Switch-On Event The Christmas decorations have long been removed and put away, trees and cards have been recycled and the festivities are now just a distant memory - but the Christmas in Tetbury committee continues to plan and raise funds for next December. We’ve been delighted to receive many messages saying how beautiful the town centre looked, from both residents and visitors. The simple white lighting

complemented the magnificent town centre buildings beautifully, and brought a “Dickensian” feel to Tetbury. The new lights on the Priory Way tree were welcomed and the snowfall-effect lights amongst the small lights on the trees on the Knapp, The Green and outside Christchurch were especially popular. The annual switch-on evening, on Thursday 3rd December, was possibly the best yet. Best of all, it was free! Thank you to everyone who made it possible, in particular, Father Christmas and his many helpers, among them Sue Hirst, Katie Rowlett, Lily Gregory (winner of the Saint Mary’s school art

competition), the stewards, council staff (Colin and David) and the police for their hard work on the night. A special thank you to Highgrove Enterprises (our main sponsor), Tetbury Town Council, the Lions of Tetbury, The Feoffees, IHS, Lyndsey’s Café, Skeins of Tetbury, Artique, Bay Gallery, Elite Wealth Management, Martin White Jeweller, Moloh, Taylor Black and The Tetbury Tailor for their generosity and support. Here’s a nice story. One Sunday a mother shakes her son awake, telling him it was time to go to church. No response. Ten minutes later she is back: “Get up now, and go to church.” “But mum, I don’t want to. Why should I to church – why should I bother?” Her reply: “Two reasons. Firstly, you know you should go to church on Sunday, and secondly you’re the Bishop!” I found this story in a book by a Dominican Friar, Timothy Radcliffe called “Why go to church?” And it’s a good question, isn’t

it? Many of us connect with God in lots of ways that don’t involve church - from standing awed by a beautiful sunset to being overwhelmed by the wonder of life as we hold a new-born child. It puts us in touch with something spiritual - something beyond ourselves that might inspire us, or give us a sense of deep peace. Yet Timothy Radcliffe argues that being a Christian without going to church is like trying to play football on your own. At St Marys’, we will be exploring all of these questions in our discussion meeting

News from St Marys’ Church weekly through Lent. Do come and join us! You can get more information from leaflets in church, our website or our Parish Office (01666 502 333). As well as the discussion groups, we have special Church services all through Lent. It all begins on Wednesday 10th February, at 7pm, with our Ash Wednesday service when we keep the centuries-old tradition where people are invited forward, for their foreheads to be marked in ash with the Sign of the Cross. We do this to show our sorrow at all we have done that hurts others and our relationship with God, and our asking for forgiveness. Then, each Sunday, our services at 8am and 9.30am will mark the journey through Lent. For children, our Little Fishes Sunday School meets during the main 9.30am service. They will be exploring who Jesus was, with Bible stories and craft activities. All this activity is about preparing ourselves for the events leading up to Holy Week, and Easter Day itself. Tetbury Dolphins Lawn Tennis Club 2015 was a really successful year for Tetbury Tennis club. Our courts at Sir William Romney School were playing well and may have contributed to some of the success of our teams. We enjoyed a very active match season over the spring and summer with three teams playing in the Gloucester and Chippenham leagues. Our teams did well with one team gaining promotion to divison1 of the Gloucestershire league and another finishing third overall in top division finish in the Chippenham league – a high standard of tennis played and representing Tetbury well. The ethos of the club continued. Inclusive, friendly and open to new members. 2015 was the first year ever that we held

a coaching programme for adults and juniors - courtesy of ADS coaching - and finally we have an online presence through a revamped website (search for Tetbury Tennis), a Facebook page and Twitter account. Two tournaments and an open day went down well. Our chairman and a member for over twenty years, Brett Watson, has moved away

to Devon. Brett was a great presence on and off court and instrumental in the success and spirit of the club, particularly in making a successful switch from our old out of town courts to the current location at Sir William Romney. Many thanks to Brett. 2016 will be a good year. British tennis is going from strength to strength and we aim to follow suit. The Australian open will soon be on us – as in a few months will lighter evenings for more play on court. In the meantime Saturday coaching and Sunday club morning will continue and Wimbledon tickets will be allocated. New members are always welcome.

Leighterton Primary School

The Alien arrived in a spaceship!

There was a very exciting start to this term, at Leighterton, when our children returned to school. Our younger children found footprints and other clues in their area, which they investigated. These led to a spaceship which looked as though it had crashed into Leighterton Primary School! The children reported their findings in our school assembly and all of our children at Leighterton helped them to find more clues to examine. It has led to all sorts of learning across the whole curriculum. The learning for our Year Three and Four children, this term, is about the Romans and during the first week of term our children visited the Corinium Museum in Cirencester to launch their topic. They had opportunities to learn about the everyday lives of Romans, including making mosaics, exploring cooking utensils and finding out what they used to eat, dressing up as a Roman and wearing Roman jewellery and playing Roman games.

that they have been accepted into the ‘Rocket Science’ programme where they will be sent 200 seeds to plant. 100 of these seeds will have been held in microgravity in space for six months and 100 will have stayed on Earth.

The children will plant these and collect Our oldest children returned to school for a measurements about their growth. They ‘Space day’ to launch their new topic, ‘Earth will present the information to the rest of and Beyond’. They came dressed up and school and input their data into a national had fun finding out about their new topic database where it will be analysed and and researching Tim Peake’s launch to the interpreted by leading scientists from International Space Station and following the Royal Horticultural Society and the his adventures. We were very proud on the day when the national school league tables were published and we found out that out of the 292 primary schools in Gloucestershire, Leighterton Primary School had come 11th, putting us in the top four per cent in the Local Authority! Schools in Gloucestershire, as a Local Authority, have performed very well, which means that Leighterton Primary School is even higher nationally. Last year we had a big focus on improving writing and this year we have trained our teaching team to use Big Writing. Our focus is on using higher level vocabulary, conjunctions, openers and punctuation in writing and we use it use throughout school to further build on the solid foundations already in place. As part of this our children are encouraged to collect new words and experiment with these in their writing.

Tetbury Theatre Group Our group continues to keep up a constant and varied programme and the last couple of months have continued in this vein, with plenty of variety also planned for the new year of 2016. Our visit to Longleat on November the 28th with fifty-four members was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. A huge bonus was the weather! All the forecasts predicted rain and most of the area around Longleat suffered heavy storms, but we missed it all and spent the day travelling around the Safari Park and the Lake in the dry and then touring the excellent illuminations when they were switched on at dusk. We rejoined our coach at approx. 5.15 pm to return to Tetbury just as the rain started.

Our December visit took place on December the 10th and thirty-three members went to Gloucester Cathedral for a musical concert sponsored by the “Meningitis Now” trust. The programme included the Band of Gloucestershire Constabulary, the Cheltenham Ukulele Ensemble and the Bishop’s Cleeve Primary School Choir. A very diverse range of performances and music was enacted, which met with a mixed reception from our members, but still, we all took heart from the fact that it was in aid of a very good cause and enjoyed the departure from the cathedral, where mince pies were being distributed and a snow machine gave a seasonal atmosphere. Now to the future: Friday January the 29th marks our Annual General Meeting at 7.00pm. On Wednesday the 3rd of February we are going to the Bristol Hippodrome. Don’t forget the coach is at 1.00pm! On Wednesday March the 9th we shall be visiting Stroud Cinema for a performance of The Magic Flute. Any new members should be aware that

the committee select the venue/show and we need to place the block booking a couple of months prior to the performance. This means that when you join it could take a short while before you will receive details for you to make a selection. Beyond March, plans are in hand for April (Birmingham New Alexandra Theatre); May Malvern; June Outing TBA; July Newbury. Details regarding these events will be shared soon. For any information on membership please contact Lin Tanswell 01666 505129 or Helen Price 01666 503187. 380510 AGW Howell:Layout 1

Christ Church, like many other churches, is always looking at ways of serving the community. One way we do that is collecting food for the food bank. (I know other churches in the town do the same.) One morning in December I was in the gym at Forest Green watching two different television screens. On the one

was the Jeremy Kyle Show - on the other was a programme called “Sister Rita to the Rescue.” This was one of five programmes shown each morning that week. Apparently, Sister Rita has been a nun for fifty years and works in a day centre in one of the poorest parts of Manchester. She is a very determined Irish lady, known locally as “Attila The Nun.” The food bank there was a very important part of the work. I wonder if any of you have wondered why there is no food bank in Tetbury? Perhaps you think there is no need? Well actually there is.

News from Christ Church Some time ago there was a special bus service to take clients to the food bank in Cirencester, but this eventually stopped. Now Health Visitors and others are telling us that there is a real need in our town, so early in this New Year I shall be attending a meeting to discuss how we go forward. Will it be a distribution centre? Will it be a Phone Delivery Service? As soon as more news is available, I shall let you know. Allium 22/2/08 22:28 Page 1 440208 Rev Stuart Radford

Bluebell For a small market town, we are reminded on a daily basis as we go about our business of how fortunate we are as a community. We have so much available to us for our comfort and benefit. Perhaps top of most people’s list is the Volunteer Bureau in New Church Street, as this exists to help all those disadvantaged in our community

A typical wheelchair accessible vehicle

!

to live life as fully as possible, with the help of volunteers. Another important benefit is that the town has its own DialA-Ride service, providing transport for the disadvantaged, frail and elderly and those who are isolated for whatever reason, a vehicle often seen in action every day. However, it may come as a surprise to learn that also based in Tetbury, for the exclusive use of all its residents, is a wheelchairaccessible vehicle (WAV) known as “Bluebell” that can be driven on a valid car license, which any resident over the age of 21 can hire on a self-drive basis.

Clubs International began as the dream of Chicago insurance man Melvin Jones. Lions are now established as the world’s largest and most active service club organization with over 1.3 million members and to celebrate our centennial year in 2017, all clubs have been tasked with undertaking projects that will have meaningful benefit to the community, focusing their efforts on addressing local issues to maximize global service impact. (The overall goal is to serve more than 100 million people.)

WAV’s are vehicles that are specially converted so that a wheelchair user can travel as a passenger without needing to transfer out of their wheelchair. All drivers are given instruction on the manually operated ramp at the back of the vehicle, on how to load the wheelchair, strap it in safely and fill in the log book; it is as simple as that.

Working to help in the replacement of this vehicle fits the criteria perfectly. Not ignoring the many demands on our resources that occur from time to time both locally, nationally and internationally, we have nevertheless set a target of raising in excess of £12,000 by early 2017, to do so. Working together with the Volunteer Bureau, we hope to supplement this with possible grant donations to a total that will allow the purchase of a good quality, lowmileage used vehicle.

This is a remarkable asset to have available to the expanding population in Tetbury, but it is now over twelve years old and will soon need replacing. It is with great pleasure, then, that we can announce that the Lions Club, which occupies a unique position in trying to help improve the local community, has taken on this challenge.

With the strong support we enjoy from the people of Tetbury, we are confident we can achieve this goal. We are off to a very good start with a very successful Christmas raffle and will supplement this with regular monthly donations, the Easter raffle and the net surplus from our very successful Wacky Races event.

The Lions Club have a distinguished service history that dates back to 1917, when Lions

In December, at our Christmas social evening, we enjoyed listening to our speaker Fiona Eadie. She is a professional storyteller. This was a very appropriate entertainment for the season on a cold winter evening and we ended by singing carols. In contrast, in January, we “sailed the British

coast” with Keith Essam who described the voyage he made a few years ago. There were many questions and our members were impressed by his considerable personal achievement. In December we responded to an appeal from the Neonatal Intensive care unit at Southmead hospital by knitting teddies for the babies in hospital over Christmas. We are planning to help with any future projects they propose.

Letters to the Editor

currently working on a date where a draft beer of their choice will be served in Strangers Bar in the House of Commons.

Dear Editor In November I held a Coffee Morning/ Jewellery Party to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and I would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to all the people who came and gave so generously. Several people were unable to come but very kindly sent a donation. I can’t thank you all enough for your kindness and would like to let you know that a cheque for £265 was sent to the Prostate Cancer UK charity. The winner of the ‘Number of Sweets in the Jar’ competition was Marie Thompson. There were fifty-eight sweets and Marie was the closest guess at fifty-five. Well done Marie! With heartfelt thanks to all,

Geoffrey Clifton-Brown Ed: Well no, Mr Clifton-Brown didn’t actually write to me, I admit, but I feel using a little artistic license in presenting this news to you is excusable… Dear Editor, I went to see the last performance of the Dolphins Dramatic Society production of “Summer Holiday” at the end of 2015, which I enjoyed very much, It was a very lively show, different from their usual autumn production and the music was quite nostalgic. How disappointing, then, to hear that with a population of over 5,000 in the town the hall wasn’t packed full on the three nights of the performance. I am quite upset at the lack of enthusiasm, especially when one hears moans like “There’s never anything to do in Tetbury!”

Yvonne Bossy Dear Editor, Please will you pass my thanks on to the population of Tetbury and District for their support of The Poppy Appeal? And also my thanks to all those who helped in any way, particularly house-to-house collectors, business premises, street collectors, churches and so on. In total they helped raise almost £13,600 for this year’s appeal. This would not be possible without people who are willing to give up their time for an hour or more to help with the cause.

Without audiences it can only be a matter of time before the society will not be able to afford to put on any more shows. Maybe some of you out there would like to join in,

having read this? I know I’m going to! Concerned Supporter Ed: After 100 years of providing entertainment it would indeed be a shame if the Dramatic Society were unable to carry on. I too enjoyed Summer Holiday a lot. More please. Dear Editor, Some years ago a massage therapist named Terry Rudge operated his practise from an address in Long Street. Since Terry retired I have tried at least ten practitioners to obtain the same quality of expertise and service – without success. If any of his former clients reading this happen to have found anyone offering a similar type and standard of massage therapy, I should be most grateful for a telephone call! Phil Dominey 01275 372234 Dear Editor, Having taken Tetbury Fire Station’s Christmas Carol Float on its third and last outing in December 2014, we decided to investigate why she seemed to be scraping the floor more than ever before. It turned out that the former caravan chassis was being held together with little more than luck!

Regards

Over the next 6 months a new chassis was sourced, sanded and painted (a great team effort) and with a lot more wiring screws and bolts employed, it was ready for our three outings in December of 2015.

Jane Haines Honorary Poppy Appeal organiser

Those raised £2,850 pounds for the Firefighters charity, which is fantastic.

Dear Editor,

We owe a massive thanks to the people of Tetbury – and thanks too to the Lion’s Club, Bingo Club, Cotswold Steel at Babdown, Jewson’s, Eagle Plant and GLC&R Williams at Cherington forge.

This week I was very pleased to welcome to the House of Commons the landlords of The Royal Oak in Tetbury and the Falcon Steakhouse in Wotton-under-Edge, who were the winners of The Cotswold and Stroud, respectively, Pub of the Year competition held by the Wilts and Glos Standard. We are

Since the Advertiser last appeared HOTS has met twice. Our final meeting in 2015 was on 8th December when we held the Annual Social and along with refreshments and the traditional raffle we were entertained by Carol and Gwilym Davies, who had travelled from Winchcombe. They sang some historic Gloucestershire songs for us - however, the main interest they held for us was the information they had about the Tetbury Mummers, including pre-war photographs

History of Tetbury Society

of three members of the Wilkins family and Dennnis Price of Cutwell Farm. They are shown in the photos with a whitewashed ‘Bull’s Head’ mask and carrying items of ‘Mummers’ equipment – a ‘Tree’ (a decorated Christmas tree in a pot) and a small barrel or grain measure with a handle on the side. Tetbury Mummers did not resume after the war. (Peter Lisle-Taylor dressed himself in a modern Tetbury ‘Bull’ outfit that he had made for a commemoration, though, at Framptonon-Severn back in June.) This all made for a most enjoyable evening.

At our meeting on 7th January, Peter read some more details of Tetbury Mummers and said that the Cleaver family were long-time supporters. He said the original ‘Bull’ had bottle tops for eyes – and yet there was an old report that the eyes could be lit. Not to be outdone, he demonstrated how the modern bull’s eyes can be lit with red coloured lights – giving a bloodshot-eye effect! He also reported that HOTS had received a donation by Simon Preston of a number of old Deeds and Conveyances relating to Ilsom Farm including the former Warren. These will need to be examined closely but already it has been noted that Quakers were active in Tetbury as far back as 1650. Pet Rees drew attention of newer members to the book ‘History of Tetbury’ by the late Eric Hodgson. It was first published in 1976 by the Civic Society and has long been out of print but it is the best summary of Tetbury’s history. She also drew attention to the HOTS exhibition in St Marys’ Church and spoke about the origins of Sir William Romney’s Grammar School. David Long said he was at SWR’s school in 1951 and showed a school photograph of that time, which was then donated to the Society. David Walker showed a cartoon which he had bought at a car boot sale at the Goods Shed, relating to the aborted project for a railway from Stroud to Christian Malford Halt that was intended to pass through both Tetbury and Malmesbury.

Photograph from the James Madison Carpenter Collection courtesy of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.

Syd Mosdell showed his collection of Cinema programmes for the New Palace Cinema – and he also related stories of the Tetbury train delaying departure for passengers who were a little late arriving and further comments about SWR School. Our next meeting is 7.30at Christ Church on 4th February when Ian MacIntosh will speak about ‘400 years of Stroud Water Textiles’. Alan Twelvetree History of Tetbury Society

St Mary’s Playgroup Happy New Year! I’m sure the festivities all feel a long time ago now the routines are firmly back in place. Over the Christmas period we had our annual nativity service and Christmas party - both of which went down a storm and helped us raise £100, which we have used to buy 10 sets of waterproofs. We are GOOD! Ofsted came at the end of November and we are pleased that they inspected us as good in every area, noting that our “children are happy, settled and enter the playgroup confidently”, “management and staff fully understand their role in protecting children” and “all children are motivated to learn and eager to investigate the environment around them”. We are aiming for outstanding next time! The children have loved using the outdoor space and the waterproofs have proven to be a great asset - allowing the children to sit, jump, roll and get as messy as they like without destroying their uniforms. Whilst in the garden we have been creating

kitchens with pots and pans and after cooking marshmallows (pine cones) on their “fires” we enjoyed a real ‘hot chocolate and marshmallow story time’ under the trees too. The role play area has continued to be a focus of improvement and we have recently added an open ended trolley which is loved by the children. The resources and activities are regularly changed to fit with our theme but are items that the children can take around the room for imaginative play. It has been great to watch their

imaginations run loose and see how the play has developed with only keys, sieves and tubes! Our online system Tapestry is still a success with parents and it is lovely to see photos and videos of the children at home to help our assessment process and help with moving the children on.

pharmacist. The cost was so high that we took pictures sparingly, often finishing a film only just in time to beat its expiry date.

History is Relative While in my head I still feel about 12, there’s considerable evidence to the contrary. January marked my twenty-fifth anniversary of living in the Cotswolds, and then came my birthday, which occasioned a nostalgic flick through old albums of me as a child at my parents’ house. These are proper, old-fashioned albums, filled with photos taken with cameras using rolls of film. The 12, 24 or 36 prints per film were developed and printed by the local

For most of the photos of myself as a child, I can remember details of the moment each one was captured, including the colour and texture of the clothes I was wearing, even though the pictures are black and white. What startles me, though, is the realisation that many items in the photos look as if they belong in a museum: my old-fashioned tricycle, my doll’s pushchair (pushchairs, not buggies, in those days), and my toy washing machine, complete with - wait for it - a mangle! But before I can feel too ancient, my sense of perspective is restored by a trip to the HMS Belfast, now permanently docked in London and run by the Imperial War Museum. Practically my entire family accompany my father (83), who served on the Belfast during the Korean War. He joined its crew at the age of 18, just five years after the end of the Second World War. The museum’s exhibits remind us just how different daily life was then. As we pass the ship’s NAAFI shop, my father fondly remembers buying sweets, still on ration ashore, to take home to his younger sister. The story captures the imagination of my six-year-old cousin William. “Uncle Peter, could you buy anything in the NAAFI shop?” he enquires. “Oh yes,” says my father, whose needs at sea were few. “Could you

buy pizza?” is my cousin’s next earnest question. It’s a striking example of the change in our society’s eating habits in the intervening 66 years… Museums like these and individuals like my father who carefully preserve photo albums, diaries and letters remind us in our busy, time-pressed world that what happens today is tomorrow’s history. Long may they encourage us to follow in their footsteps. A new era for the Choir We start our new year and first session with a new Musical Director. We extend a very warm welcome to Richard George. Richard was Head of the Music Department at Stroud High School until last July and has also worked at Bristol Cathedral choir school. So he is a very experienced musician/teacher/choral director, and we are looking forward to working with him. We said goodbye to Nicki Heenan our previous Musical Director in November, with a farewell party where we were able thank her for all the fantastic work she did with us over

5 years, helping to develop our singing and extend our repertoire to include the Messiah choruses as well as many popular songs and show tunes. We were also able to try the wine that the choir from Zwingenberg presented to us, and share some lovely memories of their visit in October. It’s all change for this year – a new rehearsal evening and venue as well! We now meet at 7pm, on Mondays, in the Coach House function room of the Ormond in Tetbury. We have our AGM on 1st February, with our first singing session the week after. All dates on our Facebook page and our website.

Girlguiding Guiding has sections for all ages, from Rainbows to the Trefoil Guild. Our Senior Section is not, as it sounds, for our more elderly members but is for those aged 14– 26. Not only do we have an active weekly meeting but currently 16 members are helping out at other units for the younger girls – 9 of these are under 18 with some of them training as Young Leaders and others working for their D of E awards. This year sees the Senior Section celebrate their Centenary and activities planned include a sleepover at Go Bananas and a launch party at Alexandra Palace. They also have a new sweatshirt as part of their Centenary uniform. To help fund these events members spent a few hours bag packing in Tesco before Christmas. New and returning members are always welcome and an exciting year is planned. The older members of 1st Tetbury Guides joined the bag packers and are also helping the WI by putting out chairs each month. They are hoping to raise enough to fund

their Baden-Powell Adventure later in the year. Hannah also had a stall at the Christmas lights switch-on where 1st Tetbury Brownies had a cake stall. Thank

you to everyone who has supported us in our fund raising events – it makes a huge difference. I am also very proud of the favourable comments that are received on how pleasant and helpful they have been! We are also very grateful for the continued support of the Feoffees which means we can offer financial support where it is needed to enable both girls and leaders to take part in all of our activities and events. I recently presented Baden-Powell Awards to six girls from Westonbirt Guides. As I have previously written about what is involved in achieving the highest award, this time I will let the girls speak for themselves. I asked them how they would sum up working for the award and here are their replies: Evie “It was really enjoyable, particularly developing leadership skills in the activities we organised for the rest of the Guides”. Eleanor “It was a chance to develop both individual and group work skills to an extent that I wouldn’t normally be able to do”. when Flossy and I first settled here, one of the most expensive eateries was The Snooty Fox, most meals being priced two or three pounds higher than elsewhere. And if that wasn’t daunting enough, there was always dear old Fred, the gigantic Great Dane: big enough for any small child to saddle up and ride around the bar! These days, perhaps due to stiffer opposition, the Snooty’s prices sit alongside everyone else’s, so, since booking was up to me, I felt it was time to revisit. The bar’s wood and stone décor, log fire and selection of beers (this time nearly all from Cornwall) are always welcoming for a drink and chat, but a table in the restaurant - which, surprisingly for 6:30 on a Saturday night, was completely empty – meant we could concentrate on eating.

mouthful of fin bones. However, a swig of Chenin Blanc soon took my mind off it!

Mains included belly pork, rack of lamb and poussin, but true to what has become some kind of ‘mission’, Flossy chose the house burger, topped with real cheese (a must, as you know!) and bacon, with very good chips and a cruet of three sauces. The burger was meaty and flavoursome, though her summary made reference to ‘Ronseal’ (I must stress, not because it was old and preserved, obviously, but because it was ‘just what it said on the tin/menu’).

After that starter, Flossy wasn’t up for dessert, but I couldn’t resist a crème brulee with hazelnut and frangelico (hazelnut liqueur, if you’re wondering…) and homemade biscotti. ‘It’s been ages since we ate here,’ I thought. ‘Better check out all three courses.’ And I’m glad I did. The brulee was lusciously thick and smooth, with hints of hazelnut throughout and a classically crunchy sugar topping. To accompany it, I treated myself to a small, expensive glass of Californian Black Muscat dessert wine so deep red and delicious it could’ve been port.

A more exciting bun might have been nice, but hey-ho. I had lemon sole, which was firm, meaty and well-cooked, and new potatoes with a smattering of spinach, all slathered in butter. Very nice! Maybe the fish could’ve been more ‘trimmed’, but only because, through my own lack of due care and attention, I ended up with one

Ten starters, including mussels, baked camembert and sharing platters, made for a difficult choice, but baked figs with goat’s cheese intrigued me; the figs just softened by cooking, the cheese complimenting their slightly grainy texture, all nicely balanced with red peppers and balsamic dressing. Flossy plumped for black pudding hash, with streaky bacon, poached egg and spiced date ketchup;Windows quite a meal in itself 22:04 140208 Classic 22/2/08 – luckily she was hungry! With a pint of

To be fair, my penchant for dessert wine tipped the bill just into the ‘seems a bit expensive’ range… but not enough to put me off going back sometime to try some other goodies! Fill

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton Newly married to an older man she has met only once, Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam in 1686 to start a new life. Her husband, Johannes, is a merchant whose wealth comes from trade with the New World and his dealings with the Dutch East India Company - and as such owns a house on the most expensive street in the city. Nella finds the transition from the country to fashionable society difficult, especially

as she does not feel mistress in her own house. Marin, Johannes’ sister, is in charge of all the domestic arrangements and is not easy to get on with, treating Nella like a foolish, naive girl who knows nothing of how things are done in Amsterdam.

Bookworm

Johannes himself keeps his distance, not sure how to treat his new wife, but in an attempt to make her feel welcome, presents her with a gift – a dolls house in the image of their real home. The doll’s house gives Nella something to occupy her time and she contacts a miniaturist to help her furnish it.

As Nella begins to understand the dynamics of her new home and the high risk trade on which they all depend, she also starts to question the motives of the mysterious miniaturist who seems to have an uncanny insight into their lives. Exploring the lives, attitudes and morals of the times, ‘The Miniaturist’ is a fascinating book, full of historical detail but also showing that people have not really changed over the centuries. Love, jealousy and greed are still the motives that drive the characters. Perhaps the only one that remains an enigma is the miniaturist herself. Ghilly Vincenti, Chelworth Bookworms

equipment to support the clinicians and allow the patients to be more comfortable.

January saw the opening of the newly refurbished Treatment Room. The Chair and Vice Chair of the PPG cut the ribbon and marvelled at how much brighter and organised the room now was. This room is used by the GPs and the nurses for various treatments, and now has more modern

Another new initiative is Social Prescribing which is connecting people with services which are not of a medical nature examples of these might be problems with family matters, housing, abuse, or just plain old loneliness. Although these things can impact on a person’s health, there is often little a GP can do, especially if they have only ten minutes with a patient, so what social prescribing does is put people in touch with services that can make a real difference to people’s lives. Romney House Surgery is lucky to be one of the first in the South Cotswolds to benefit from this initiative.

When GPs identify a need, they can refer patients to the social prescriber. One has been hired to work specifically with our surgery so they will get to know what services are available locally. They will make an appointment with the patient to talk to them about what matters most to them, then support the person by doing things such as referring them onto other agencies or support groups, making sure they are claiming all the benefits they are entitled to, or finding practical support. Most importantly, though, is that they will listen to what the patient’s needs are, rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution. And this is where we as patients can all help out. There are many groups, both formal and informal, that provide services to local people. The PPG has produced a list that the GPs are currently using but it is incomplete, so if you know of a service that might be able to help others in our community, please let the PPG know so that they can pass it on. Another change is that the PPG has new channels of communication set up to make it easier for the patents to contact them. They now have a blog where you can read up on a variety of issues that affect the surgery: https://romneyhouseppg. wordpress.com There is also a twitter feed with up to date information about the surgery and the wider NHS: @RomneyPPG. They can also be emailed: RomneyPPG@ cyberbarn.org.uk. This is in addition to the box in the surgery where you are welcome to leave any comments. And don’t worry if you don’t know what this all means, there will be future articles and blog posts explaining it all, and all of them will be available to those who do not have internet access in a file in the waiting room and on the PPG notice board. Happy New Year to you all Oh dear! I forgot to thank someone - and that someone is very important to The Dolphins Dramatic Society – Liz Truman. Liz is one of those people who works quietly in the background and does a huge amount of sewing for us. In our last production ‘Summer Holiday’ she actually made the bridesmaids dresses for Emily Bray and Layla Stevens – they were beautiful and fitted the two girls perfectly. Thank you Liz! Jenny and Anne were busy sorting out the next production in November 2015 and as mentioned before Christmas they wanted the spring play to be ‘The Odd Couple’ but despite applying for the licence in mid-November, it still hasn’t arrived. By all accounts it’s coming from America – we 21:38think they must have decided to walk with it to the UK! With time marching on, it has now been decided that they cannot wait any longer and so the second choice of play ‘Gaslight’ by Patrick Hamilton will hopefully be the one that takes place in April and will run from 14 -16 April (they are waiting for the licence to come through, which has been promised for January 15/16 2016). Anne has chosen a classic Victorian thriller here, which was first produced in 1935. The story is about a man called Jack Manningham who is slowly and deliberately driving his wife, Bella, insane. He almost succeeds but luckily a former detective called Rough, who believes Manningham to be a thief and murderer arrives on the scene to help Bella. Rough proves Manningham’s true identity and finally Bella achieves a few moments of sweet revenge for the suffering inflicted on her. This play will have you gripping your seats, so make sure you have those dates in your diary. We are always looking for new people (especially men) so if you have an interest in being on stage, making props, painting sets or sewing costumes please do give Anne a call on: 07887 377 138 . We really are a friendly bunch, so come along and meet with us and be part of a fabulous team of people. Terri White Dolphins Dramatic Society

Sheep Wash One of the aims of the Wardens is to conserve distinctive features of the Cotswold Countryside, so one morning in early December we were at Uley. Using brushcutters to clear the bramble and scrub on the steep bank near the crossroads at the lower end of Uley village, we revealed two streams. At their point of confluence, the water course was lined with stone walls and a weir to form a bath. This was the sheep wash. Local farmers would have in turn brought their flocks to the village sheep wash for dipping. Clearing the

bank also revealed Primroses coming into bloom. Yes, primroses in December!

Stone walls and hedges Other sessions enabled us to combine two of our other aims - maintenance of footpaths and conservation of traditional features. We are laying a hedge in the traditional style at a footpath and lane in King’s Stanley, rebuilding a dry stone wall along a bridleway field boundary toward Oldbury-on-the-Hill churchyard near Didmarton, and we have also installed a memorial seat in this churchyard and another in Uley graveyard.

Cotswold Voluntary Wardens Another of our wall rebuilds encloses an old stone slab stile near Ampney Crucis – and we’ve rebuilt a collapsed section of dry stone wall which had been blocking a footpath in Tetbury.

Stone Age and Iron Age We have completed clearance of trees and scrub on the Giant’s Cave stone age long barrow burial chamber, near Luckington. We have also cleared a bit more of the ramparts at the Brackenbury Ditches iron age hill fort, near Wotton-under-Edge. We’re perhaps halfway round now, concentrating on the side nearest the Cotswold Way trail.

Local Walks Local walks lead by the Wardens in February are: Sunday the 14th of February at 10.00 am from the High Street, Sherston for 9 miles via Westonbirt Arboretum and Didmarton. Bring a packed lunch. Tuesday the 16th of February at 10.00 am from the Hunter’s Hall, Kingscote for 5 miles through Kingscote and Horsley Woods. Sunday the 21st of February at 10.00 am from adjacent to the Amberley Inn, Amberley for 5 miles via Minchinhampton and Box. Richard Glanville Cotswold Voluntary Wardens

Tetbury Art Society Tetbury Art Society Roy Baker Memorial Lecture This year’s speaker will be Daphne Todd OBE, portrait painter and first female President of the Society of Portrait Painters 1994-2000; Daphne won the BP Portrait Award in 2010. Although Daphne is best known for her portraits, her work covers a wide range of genres, including still life and landscapes inspired by the beautiful Kent and Sussex borders where she lives. Always working directly in front of her subject, she misses nothing and the eminent gathering of her past sitters including HRH The Prince of Wales, HRH the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Dame Janet Baker and Spike Milligan - have found it difficult to hide from her analytical gaze! Daphne has stretched her talents still further by participating in the BBC’s Big Painting Challenge, when she was one of the judges. Tickets only available from Gill Ashley 01666 840993. The first of our activities since I wrote the December article was a coach trip to the Royal West of England Academy exhibition in Bristol on Saturday 28th November arranged by Barry Barnes. The exhibition included a work by one of our members – a turtle done

Then on 2nd December, we held our Christmas Social. It was arranged by our Social Secretary, Margaret Morgan and the catering was as magnificent as anticipated - the tables beautifully decorated. There was a sale of art materials, a raffle, a quiz prepared by Barry and Margaret laid on an entertainment – Margaret and Lesley Jablonski, suitably dressed up, danced to Abba’s Dancing Queen! This event marked the end of our 2015 programme. Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 3rd February in St Michael’s Hall, Silver Street, Tetbury at 7:30 pm.

On Wednesday 2nd March we have 2 events: in the afternoon there will be the 2016 Roy Baker Memorial Lecture held in the Orchard Room at Highgrove for which the public can buy tickets – and in the evening there will be a demonstration at St Michael’s Hall by Christine Russell of a still life in pastels. Information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or phone me on 01666-502909 or Barry Barnes on 01666503926. We meet on the evening of the first Wednesday of most months in St Michael’s Hall, Silver Street, Tetbury at 7:30 pm and you will find that we are a friendly group welcoming those interested in art whatever level they have reached. Tetbury Police Museum After a forced closure just before Christmas to enable essential maintenance and redecoration,

Stroud policemen, the charge to be preferred against him being that of stealing a sum of money between ten and twenty pounds. The prisoner was placed in the guard room in the charge of one of the constables and a Tetbury officer proceeded to light a fire in the stove for the reception of the ‘guest’.

By some means the prisoner was left unguarded for a few minutes, and spying the front door of the station open he calmly walked out, unnoticed by anyone. When the constable returned he was not alarmed by the absence of his man, thinking his colleague had lodged him in the cells and it was some half an hour before the astonished officers became aware that their man was not on the premises. The prisoner apparently made full use of his period of grace, as although a week elapsed in vigilant search for him, it was unrewarded. He was supposed to have a good sum of money on him, since the duty of searching had not been carried out when the prisoner took his departure.

the Museum is open again and welcomes visitors to our ever-changing displays. We have moved the Brief Early History material and also have additional cold cases upstairs in the Lefroy Room (named after Gloucestershire’s first Chief Constable). We also now have a digital screen in the front window displaying information about the museum throughout the day.

Daniel has had a successful 2015 season swimming in the S8 classification, setting British Records for the 1500m Freestyle (long course) and 800m Freestyle (short course.) He also swam in three

major Championships, representing Gloucester City and is club captain for Gloucester city swimming club. (He’s been Gloucester county swimming champion for the last three years.) The Championships were the British Para International Meet at Glasgow, in August, the ASA National Championship at Sheffield (achieving five Golds and two Silvers) and in December, the National Para

Daniel Bennett Championship at Manchester, (one Gold, three Silver, three Bronze.) While representing Gloucester University he competed at Sheffield in the British University College Sport Championships, achieving 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze, and scoring points which were the first for a Gloucester University swimmer. Full details of council minutes can be found on www.tetbury.gov.uk - below is a small taster of decisions that took place at the December Full Council meeting. TC09. 12/15 To consider Tetbury Rugby Club Grant Application: Following the Finance & Scrutiny (F & S) meeting in November, it was agreed that the grant of £500 be awarded upon receipt of the required accounts. As these had now been received, it was proposed by Cllr Hirst, seconded Cllr Williams to award the grant of £500 – voted 9 in favour, 2 abstentions. It was felt that after the Rugby Club had been awarded their grant, the Cricket Club grant should be reconsidered at F&S January 2016 for a payment of £500. TC10. 12/15 To consider locations for CDC street cleansing funding: Following an advertisement in the Tetbury Advertiser, TTC has received suggestions from the public on areas that needed cleaning. Cllrs had also provided some suggestions and a definitive list will be emailed to the 3 District Cllrs to request funding for bins, pavement clearing and stream clearing. A paid-for feature
