Cotswold Voluntary Wardens

Another job at Uley was to repair a stile and rebuild the stone steps leading to it from the road verge. To gain access to this footpath and stile we needed to fell several trees from an overgrown fence across the road. This involved stopping the traffic, wearing high-visibility yellow jackets. We had thought this a quiet country lane, but were surprised by the amount of traffic.

Water power! It is surprising to our modern eyes that even our small Cotswold streams supported a series of mills for grinding corn or weaving woollen cloth; these were the days up until the late 19th century (1880), when water power was still used and not wasted. There were many mills on the streams through Uley and Wotton-under-Edge. In Uley, where we repaired and re-hung a kissing gate and fence on a footpath, the owner of the adjacent mill, now converted into a private dwelling, regaled us on his flood alleviation works, which mainly comprised dredging out silt from the mill pond and repairing sluices. There is hardly anything left of Holywell Mill at Wotton, really just a length of wall. The area has been purchased by the town council as an amenity, with picnic benches. We returned there recently to complete the fence and plant more trees by the stream.

There were complaints from Dursley of a diverted path being too sleep and too slippery to use safely. We installed handrails and wooden steps up the slope; it was very awkward, slithering about in the mud doing the job, but it’s much safer now! Another job in the hills above Dursley comprised installing a kissing gate and rebuilding the wall up to it, replacing an unsafe and rotten stile.

At Coaley, we have had several sessions of hedge-laying, which is my favourite job and about which I’ve written before!

Winter Walks: Local walks lead by the Wardens in February are: - Friday the 13th of February at 10.00 am for coffee at the King’s Head, King Stanley, leaving at 10.30 am for 5.5 miles to Frocester, to visit the Tithe Barn. - Sunday the 15th of February at 10.00 am from Tetbury Railway Yard car park for 9 miles to Westonbirt and Shipton Moyne. - Friday the 20th February at 10.00 am from the King’s Head, King Stanley, for 6 miles via the canal tow path. Richard Glanville

Woodlane Kennels, Cattery & Dog Grooming Est. over 25 years by Gill Butler, Veterinary Nurse.

At Nailsworth there were larger mills, including Dunkirk Mill, now converted into apartments. This was originally water powered and we worked on it some time ago, restoring the complicated system of three connected mill ponds. The mill was later augmented with steam power, using coal delivered by the railway.

Dear Reader, by the time you read this you will notice that the nights have started to get lighter with the promise of spring. I trust that you have all had a good Christmas and you haven’t broken too many of those New Years’ resolutions? The Lions have been busy with plans for this years Wacky races on the 4th of May. Firstly, I would like to congratulate our new Zone Chairman, Alan Cross. Alan is relatively new to the club coming from Rotary, but has a wealth of knowledge and experience in his previous role. We would all like to wish him success in the future and give him all the support he requires. The Ebola crisis is still hitting the headlines in Africa and also at home. The numbers of orphans and the dead is quite

incomprehensible. I would like to thank Paul Stead from the activities group for all their hard work as well as the support of all the Lions for the success of the Christmas raffle. Thanks are due to Perfection Health and Beauty, Capelli, the Priory Inn and the Close Hotel, Sweets and Treats and Quails, all of whom very generously donated items; £1,174 was raised which I believe is a record for us. Bravo! Our first lady Lion member, Pat Horton, has recently resigned from our Pride to take up a new station across the county border; we wish her every success for the future and hope our paths cross again. Plans for this year include a renewal of ‘Message in a Bottle’ - a simple idea, designed to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location their fridge. This scheme is free to the user and while focused on the more vulnerable

Spectacles Recycling Donate unwanted glasses and change someone’s life. Imagine if you could help a child read. An adult succeed in his job. A senior maintain her independence. And provide a community with more opportunities to grow and thrive. Lions Den people in our community, anyone can fall downstairs or have an accident, so this scheme can benefit anyone, including you. As a minimum it will save the Emergency Services valuable time identifying you and your emergency contacts. By telling them whether you have special medication or allergies or not, it is a potential lifesaver and provides peace of mind to users and their friends and families alike. Another project always underway is the recycling of Spectacles. We had the rather sad occasion recently of the sudden death of my father-in-law, Danny, and Lorna had the unenviable task of going through cupboards, drawers and glove boxes in the car in which we found almost a dozen pairs of spectacles. I know that we are all very conscious of our eyesight and how precious our sight is - and so want to relaunch the campaign to collect and recycle unwanted pairs, in conjunction with our local opticians. They will help us put them to good use for the less fortunate. Keith Leaver, Lion President

Theatre Group Our last visit to the Theatre of 2014 was to see “The Christmas Truce” at the RSC in Stratford-uponAvon. The booking was made way back in April, so by the time December came, we had almost forgotten that we were going. The play, written by Phil Porter and directed by Erica Whyman was designed by Tom Piper, who co-created the inspiring installation of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London.

yearn for home, but then the revels are brought to an abrupt end by the top brass.

feeling subdued, glad to have seen the play and wondering how they had managed to cope with the appalling conditions, irregular contact from home and the uncertainty of it all.

The acting by the company – no “major” stars were in evidence – was excellent. The “apron” stage allowed the actors a great deal of movement, with makeshift boxes, ladders and bales of hay used to evoke the trenches. The lighting, the sound of bombs and “whizz bangs” and finally the snow, all contributed hugely to what made the play so powerful and emotional.

Please don’t forget the AGM on FRIDAY FEBRUARY 27th at 7.00 pm in the Dolphins Hall – and if you would like to join the Theatre Group or just to gain more information about it, please phone Lin Tanswell on 01666 505029. A belated Happy New Year!

“The Christmas Truce” revisits the famous episode on Christmas Day, when British officers met a German officer and they arranged a cessation in the fighting. In the play, there is a slow building of peace and goodwill between the soldiers; they exchange “presents” of food and drink, bury their dead, then a game of football is proposed. The foes realise they are enjoying the game and the carols and

Looking Back on My Double Life

When I first visited the Cotswolds decades ago, I would have been one of those tourists. Now that I’ve lived here for nearly a quarter of a century, a refugee “Quaint”, “timeless”, “historic” - all of these from London suburbia, I realise the area epithets will drip from the lips of tourists is not as static as it looks. Edge-of-town as they return to the Cotswolds, their superstores have effected a sea-change, numbers growing as the days lengthen. while high streets evolve less perceptibly They will inevitably marvel at the ancient but just as unstoppably. I can’t even architecture and landscape that we remember now what preceded Tetbury’s take for granted, and they will boost the Tardis-like Yellow-Lighted Bookshop local economy via our tourist attractions (was it the bike shop?), which feels and and shops. (That’s always my excuse for looks, in the nicest possible way, as if it’s splashing out when I’m on holiday: “Just been there forever, and I’m glad that it’s 380510 AGW Howell:Layout 1 22/4/10 21:32 Page 1 there. The same goes for Hobbs House. boosting the local economy, dear”.)

A.G.W. Howell (Builder) Ltd Specialist In Stone Work & Renovations

While some changes will always be more welcome than others, it’s natural to be sceptical and even fearful if too much changes too fast, even though change often brings fresh blood, new ideas and younger populations to keep cherished traditions and old institutions alive.

A recent trip to the land of my birth Sidcup, Kent, on the edge of London’s urban sprawl - made me look Renovations • Extensions afresh at the nature of change Barn Conversions • Paving in residential areas. Many years ago, I was outraged to discover Brickwork • Blockwork that half the garden of the www.agwhowellbuilderltd.co.uk house I grew up in had been sold to developers. A threebed semi on a corner plot in Call for a free quote: a 1930s garden suburb, it had the generous proportions that came as standard in an era 380510 when housebuilding CL Tetbury Advertiser Ad 2-10-14_Layout 1 15/12/2014 14:58 Pageland 1 was

cheap and plentiful. Building a new house on that plot required the demolition of my old swing, my father’s garage and his beautiful rose bed. I was outraged. Revisiting just before Christmas with a more mature eye, I noticed that newcomers have added style, substance and care to the whole neighbourhood double glazing, extensions, new doors, smart signage. Even the humble bungalow where I was born had been extended upwards and outwards and had expensive cars on the drive. As a child, I travelled everywhere by bus. The area had leapt upmarket, yet the many parks and green spaces remained. I found myself thinking: “What a lovely place to bring up a child!” So I started the New Year feeling twice blessed for the double life I have led: half in the suburbs, half in the country, and grateful for the subtle changes that help both places to evolve and survive for future generations to enjoy. Many of you will have noticed that The Market Hall clock keeps stopping and I would like to assure you that we are arranging to get this repaired

As the spring approaches and the weather improves, can I please ask for the community’s co-operation in 2015 when using the Feoffee ‘Open Spaces’ around town and particularly the Railway Line, Preston Park and Herd Lane. Firstly, let’s keep these areas free of ‘dog mess’, bins and bags are provided and these areas are provided and maintained for the use of our entire community – including children – and we are all aware of the health risks and how unpleasant this can be if not removed. These areas are a great asset to the town and when using can you ensure that you take any rubbish home with you. If you would like to know more about the work we do in the town and the type of grants and support available, please do not hesitate to contact us. Educational or Training Grants, as well as discretionary Grants to the town’s 19:38 clubs and societies are available by application to the Feoffees. Cotswold District Council As the district’s local plan starts its final route to completion, Tetbury’s growth agenda is now emerging. The town’s original allocation as part of the Cotswold’s allocation for the 20 years 2011-2031 was 650 homes, but with existing builds planning permissions and appeals, this is now 739 – the majority of these within 5 sites: • SIAC/Matbro (225 , including the McCarthy & Stone sheltered accommodation already under construction) • Highfield Farm (250) • Pegasus retirement village on the Autonumis site (114) • Quercus Park (50) • Land south of Berrells Road (34) This number has been taken into consideration in the local plan, with the result that only 2 extra sites have been included as preferred sites, the Northfield Garage site (25 houses) and a site adjacent to the Cirencester Rd. industrial estate (12 houses.) Public consultation on the plan is open until 27th February .The plan can be viewed on line at www.cotswold.gov.uk/go/ForwardPlanning but a hard copy is available in Tetbury library. The free parking on Monday and Tuesday afternoons (between 1.00 pm and 6.00 pm) at the CDC owned car parks (Brewery Lane and West St.) continues throughout February. This concession will also apply to the 1.00 pm – 6.00 pm slot on Monday 2nd March. The Chipping Car Park is not owned by CDC, and is subject to separate tariffs. From 12th January a new £50 off-peak ‘plus’ ticket will be available to residents - allowing parking for both off peak periods and all day on weekends in both Brewery Lane and West St. car parks and the introduction of a £2 all day tariff at West St. car park. Girlguiding Tetbury provides weekly activities for over 100 girls aged 5 – 18! If you think your daughter is missing out on the fun please contact me as we have a few spaces in most units. We also have spaces for adults – it’s not just the girls that have fun! The Leaders had an enjoyable social evening recently and it gave us the opportunity to say thank you to Sally who, after 25 years’ service, has reluctantly decided to retire. However, once in the guiding family there is always a link and an open invitation to return and join in events.

chance to appreciate how big the guiding family is across the world and to meet up with all age groups that make up Tetbury District. If you would like to join us for this activity afternoon please contact me. INTOPS news – Cath, Georgia, Jess and Alexa were very cold after running their chocolate tombola at the Tetbury Christmas evening but were delighted

with the £136 that they had raised. They are all still actively fund-raising for their international trips and have joined the rest of the County Guides in bag packing sessions. Sue Doidge - Tetbury District Commissioner tetburymum@hotmail.co.uk

We are always delighted when past volunteers decide to return to units and we welcome Stacey back this term, who will be running Rainbows. This was prompted by a Facebook conversation about glitter just before Christmas! Ann has also agreed to come back and help too, and they join Immy our Young Leader and Freya who is a Guide. This is perfect timing as we said goodbye (and thank you) to Sharon at the end of last term. However, we really need another two adults to join the team so if you might be interested please contact me. Our next big event is a celebration of World Thinking Day which takes place on the 22nd of February every year. This is a

Dolphins Recreation Centre Much of the work of the trust goes into the maintenance and general improvement of facilities. In the hall, we have been replacing ageing kitchen equipment, whilst on the recreation ground, at the end of last year we finished a programme of tree surgery to improve the condition of the perimeter hedge, and to protect the trees within it.

Composite doors combine natural timber with hi-tech synthetic materials, creating a secure structure with a fantastic finish. • Front & Back Doors • Built to Last • Wide Colour Range

The alterations to the front car park have been delayed until February, but we are aiming to also re-lay the rugby club car park, to make that more accessible for cars and pedestrians alike.

The pre-planning discussions on the new Dolphins Centre were very positive, but the planners have asked for a more detailed report on traffic movements as a result of the increased usage. When this is completed we aim to submit a full planning application in the next month and have good reason to be optimistic that this will be successful.

Computer Advice Nearly all computing devices use wireless connections - and thick Cotswold stone walls or the foil-lined thermally-insulated walls in new houses can severely restrict wireless coverage. Technology has improved and router range is certainly better that the original standard, but now additional hardware can be used to supplement and extend the range. Before spending money, first check you have the router in the best location. Sometimes just moving it can dramatically improve coverage in neighbouring rooms. A longer cable will allow more movement, if required. Wood and glass do not cut the signal down, but walls do. If you have moveable antennae, try a different position. Having placed your router in the optimum position you may then wish to consider some hardware to help spread coverage. There are two technologies that may help. One picks up and rebroadcasts your Wi-Fi - the other uses home plug technology to send the Internet around your house using your existing mains wiring. Sometimes both are necessary depending upon the size of the house and the coverage required. I can bring along various devices as there is no one device that fits all circumstances. Depending upon which one works best, that’s the only one you need to pay for, saving the hassle and aggravation of having to return unsuitable equipment. I’ve employed various types of equipment in a wide variety of installations and the performance of equipment can work over great distances, negating the need for a second broadband service or costly cable installations. As we are at the beginning of a New Year (well almost!) consider a service for your computer and giving it a good cleanout. If you are running out of storage space, then have a new hard drive fitted rather than replace the PC – or if you do not have enough room for a second drive, I can clone your existing drive to a much bigger new one and swap it out for you. You can just pick up where you left off but with much more free space!

With the cost of Christmas having caught up with us, do consider using your computer to save you some cash. Cash back and voucher-code web sites can be a lucrative source of income and online energy, insurance, banking products and everyday shopping can now all pay you back in spades. Some sites even offer cash back on card sales in-store. Do get in touch if you would like some more information. Lastly, you may have noticed big dark green boxes being erected near existing BT boxes along the side of the roads

in town. Well, fibre broadband is on its way and should be up and running from the end of March. Hopefully, the service providers will be offering some good deals on this much faster internet technology. To check progress, go to http://www. fastershire.com/ and check if and when it will become available on your line. Thank You Tetbury How beautiful the town centre looked back in December. Large crowds braved the cold on the evening of Thursday 4th December to enjoy the annual switch-on of the Tetbury Christmas lights. It is a wonderful community event and a real team effort. We couldn’t have done it without you. In particular, thank you to: • Father Christmas, Charlie Sharpe and Rumi Rowe (the art competition winners) for switching on the lights; • The Feoffees of Tetbury for erecting the large trees at the steps of the Market Hall (kindly donated by Mr and Mrs Lowsley-Williams) and for providing the perfect centre-piece for the celebrations; • Peter Dauncey (the Town Crier) and his wife Joan for leading the procession; • The bell ringers for the peel of bells to announce the beginning of the event; • The Avening Silver band and the Big Brunch Band for providing the musical entertainment;

• Saint Mary’s School Choir and the Community Choir, for supporting the singing; • Arts Frenzy for providing us with dance entertainment • The traction engine enthusiasts that travelled all day from Badminton at four miles an hour to provide us with a steam roller exhibit. • Ali Bristow of Artique for creating such a magical Santa’s Grotto for us and Hortensia for making up and supplying us with the beautifully wrapped packets of sweets that were given as gifts from Santa. • Tetbury Town Council for producing the song sheets and Tetbury Town Council staff (Colin and David) for assisting us with the road closure; • The police, the Police Community Support Officers and the British Red Cross for protecting our safety; • The stallholders and shops who supported us and congratulations to those who took part in the shop window display competition;

Christmas in Tetbury • The individuals and band of helpers who dressed 38 trees in preparation for the event and who acted as marshals or Santa’s helpers on the evening itself. The traditional Christmas lunch at the Royal Oak was another huge success, made even more special by the carol singing performance of the talented Wassailers of Stroud. For pictures capturing all the wonderful events, check out our website: www. christmasintetbury.org.uk, maintained by my wonderful husband, Kevin Farnham. Classes dived straight into their new term topics on their first day back, in January. Pupils in the Hawks class (Y3/4) had a particularly memorable introduction into their chosen topic, when their class teacher Mr Wilkinson was replaced for the afternoon by a time-travelling Roman complete in toga and sandals. The Ancient Roman addressed pupils by their Roman names and gave them a fascinating insight into Roman history. The visitor looked remarkably similar to Mr Wilkinson himself, who made a reappearance just in time for home-time!

On a musical note, for the second year running, Avening School has taken part in the Young Voices concert held in Birmingham NEC. Pupils from Y4-6 have practised tirelessly at home and school in order to make their performances perfect and did the School proud at this exciting musical event.

Only one week into the new term and already the trophy shelves had a new addition to their collection, brought home by the Hawks class for the interschool gymnastic competition where they attained first place. In the same

A New Year - A New Term. New topics - New challenges.

If you see any paper aeroplanes flying overhead around Avening this term they will probably belong to the Y1/2 pupils who are exploring ‘flight’ in their term topic - ‘Can it fly?’ They will be visiting Kemble airport later on in the term and using mathematical methods to measure the flight paths of their own paper aeroplanes.

Last year was very good for Avening W.I. and now we’re looking forward to 2015. We have a new president, Gwyneth Simpson. Our retiring president, Maisie Stanton, has looked after us for the past three years. She had been Head of Avening Playgroup for many years, so she had plenty of experience! In December we had an excellent lunch at the Snooty Fox and then our usual fun Christmas party with a wonderful bring-and-share supper, washed down with wine and soft drinks. We went to Worcester for our shopping trip in November, it being the first day

of the Victorian Market, which filled the central streets of the city and was most interesting. There were all the usual shops too and some visited the lovely Cathedral and walked by the river. A short journey back down the M5 and we were home for tea! Our quiz night in the autumn enabled us to support The African Vine Project, the Stroud Food Bank and Cotswold Care Hospice, the latter donation in memory of our member Chris Naish who recently passed away - but had had wonderful support from the Hospice. We had an interesting talk about the life of Jane Austen at our January meeting. There was a ballot for our Denman College Bursary for this year - all the

members who were interested had the opportunity to put their names ‘in the hat’. The winning member was Liz Knowles. Once again our ‘flower of the month’ competition had some unusual blooms for this time of year - won by an azalea growing in a garden. We hope to do a walk this month in Preston Park, weather permitting, with lunch at the Trouble House afterwards. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings on the second Thursday of every month except August, starting at 7.30pm in Avening Memorial Hall. 530212 Pat testing:Layout 1 Shirley Hand

The Priory Inn Blog “I trust your Garden was willing to die ... I do not think that mine was—it perished with beautiful reluctance, like an evening star—” Emily Dickinson, in a letter to her Aunt Katie Sweetser, 1880 All around us a winter wonderland is barely breathing, making it difficult to imagine how Spring will emerge, but beneath the frozen ground – as Laurie Lee eloquently observed - “the bean and the wheat seed hug their germs in the earth”. We must now be patient for Nature to reliably play out her role, allowing us to enjoy a wealth of fresh produce when the conditions are right. In the meantime root vegetables and winter leaves continue to provide nutrition for flavoursome dishes.

It always feels a bit strange writing an article for the February edition of the Tetbury Advertiser. The article is written in January so any recent activity described occurred last year. January is a month of a much-

needed recovery from the Christmas period except for the committee; our treasurer tries to make the annual accounts balance, the chairman tries to fill gaps in the committee and so on. So what did happen last year? There was plenty going on for us with the usual monthly meetings, the Roy Baker Memorial Lecture, 2 exhibitions, 2 outdoor

Tetbury Art Society painting days, a summer social, the visit to Art In Action, the Autumn Sale, a visit to the Autumn Exhibition of the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol and the December Social. The last 2 events haven’t yet been reported. Suffice it to say that the Bristol trip is always enjoyed. The December social is rapidly becoming a tradition (see picture of ‘the ladies’ table’) and this time we auctioned the art materials of the late Mrs Pauline Stevens, kindly donated to us by her family, in aid of the Cotswold Care Hospice. There were a lot of items and the proceedings eventually had to be sped up as people were beginning to think about going home! But we were able to raise £374 for the hospice. Our thanks go to Doreen Pierce and Maureen Hawkridge who are retiring from the Committee and to so many others who have helped us in a variety of ways during the past year.

TETBURY ART SOCIETY ROY BAKER MEMORIAL LECTURE

THE ROYAL DRAWING SCHOOL 1240215

WEDNESDAY 11 MARCH 2015, 2.15 PM The aim of the Royal Drawing School is to raise the standard and profile of drawing through teaching and practice. We will hear from one of the School’s tutors about its background and organisation, and from a student who has benefited from its charitable and educational work. The talk will be illustrated with a powerpoint display.

Looking ahead, on Wednesday 4th February, we hold our AGM in St Michael’s Hall, Tetbury at 7:30 pm when we review 2014, elect our committee for 2015 and unveil our programme for the year ahead. This could be a good time for anyone considering joining to come along and meet us. Our regular monthly meetings then start on Wednesday 4th March when Max Hale will give a demonstration with water-soluble oil paints using a palette knife technique. Information on the Society’s activities can be found on our website www. tetburyartsociety.org.uk or phone me on 01666-502909 or Barry Barnes on 01666-503926. We meet on the evening of the first Wednesday of most months in St Michael’s Hall, Silver Street, Tetbury at 7:30 pm and you will find that we are a friendly group welcoming those interested in art whatever level they have reached. Tetbury Camera Club The speakers at our meeting in mid-November were Bob Ryan and Alison Price, a husband and wife team who are fairly recent residents in Tetbury. Between them they showed a collection of wildlife images from ‘Five Continents’. The subjects included gorillas, orang utans, proboscis monkeys, penguins, seals and lastly, but by no means least, cheetahs. All images were of excellent quality and presented with humour, always a very welcome ingredient. This presentation was followed the week after by an internal competition, judged by Ralph Snook. It was Ralph’s first visit to Tetbury Camera Club and he proved to be a very popular judge and we shall no doubt ask him to come again at some time in the future. Early December saw a return visit by Andy Beel. Andy is a black and white specialist and is renowned for moody, black and white prints. He did not disappoint. Amongst other, rather more conventional prints, he showed a series of lithographic prints. These covered a range of tones, textures and shapes and lived up to the maxim, currently used by some, ‘it does not have to be sharp’. The next meeting comprised the judging of the internal Winter Competitions, ‘Wildlife’ for digital images and ‘Landscape’ for prints. The judge was Eddy Lane who very ably made well-received comments about all the entries. In the event, both competitions were won by Tony Banks. Eddy is a member of one of the distinctions panels of the Royal Photographic Society and gave a new twist on the interpretation of one of the distinctions, ARPS – “a red piece somewhere.” The meeting immediately before the Christmas break was a less formal affair. The digital images from which the Club entry into the Western Counties Photographic Federation (WCPF) will be selected were projected. This competition is open to all clubs in the WCPF. We entered last year for the first time. We were not disgraced, being placed 43rd out of the 55 clubs entering. However, we resolved to do better this year (as no doubt did all the other clubs not in the top few). After the projection, informal discussions took place over pizza, mince pies, coffee and tea (delivered to the room by Priory Inn staff). The picture reproduced here ‘Centennial Square’ in Birmingham was taken on a Club outing and did well in a recent competition.

Tetbury in Bloom In March, the current incarnation of the Tetbury in Bloom team, led by Sue Hirst, will celebrate its tenth anniversary. We’ve come a long way since being given permission in 2005 by Tetbury Town Council and the Feoffees to take over the planning and maintenance of the flowerbed on the Knapp! We now have between five and nine regular volunteers out and about in Tetbury on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year (except when there is snow on the ground or a really hard frost!), increasing to thirteen on evenings in June when we plant the summer bedding. Between us we look after the iconic roundabout at the Cirencester entrance to the town, all the beautiful flowerbeds on London Road and in Saint Marys’ churchyard, the Diana Memorial bed, the Anniversary Gardens, the roadside bed at the hospital, the bed on the Knapp, the public toilets in Old Brewery Lane, the fire station, the library, the “Twizzle”, the delightful garden at the front of Old Coombe House, the side garden and frontage of The Dolphins Hall, the troughs at each entrance to the town and the floral displays in the many planters around the centre of town and on the lamp posts!

Over the course of the next few articles I will explain just how our planting schemes have evolved over the past decade. Tetbury in Bloom is a year round effort in December we support the Christmas in Tetbury committee with dressing the trees that adorn the shop premises and supporting the switch-on of the Christmas lights. We also maintain a website (www.tetburyinbloom.org. uk) which includes details of all our fundraising events and many beautiful photographs of our achievements.

You are probably aware from the local and national press, that the wedding cake tree (“Cornus Controversa Variegata”) has been taken from Saint Marys’ Churchyard; it was planted by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall (patron of Tetbury in Bloom) on 3rd May 2011 to commemorate the Royal Wedding of TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. What makes it so sad is that we doubt that the tree will survive being uprooted so brutally. We will not, however, be deterred and are in discussions with the WI regarding its replacement. CM

One of the nation’s most formidable weapons of war, developed to cross No-Man’s Land, was based on Lincolnshire’s agricultural engineering expertise. First used in 1916, this devastating invention changed the whole face of warfare. Described as a water tank to keep its evolution secret, the development of more advanced versions of this armour-plated fighting machine up to the present day was described to us by John Clark on the 20th of November last year. Familiar tank names flowed, as he explained the advantages and disadvantages of successive British, German and Russian designs. Are the days of conventional warfare over due to escalating development costs and the advent of unmanned vehicles, guided missiles and sophisticated airborne drones? John suspected they are. Then back to an earlier form of locomotion: was George Stephenson (1781 - 1843) really the father of railways

Probus one

or was this a myth? Barry Dent explored this question on the 4th of December. George Stephenson’s impoverished early days as a herdsman, miner and eventually self-taught engineer were described to us, before Barry made a comprehensive summary of early engines, railway routes and competitions (such as the Rainhill trials) which made it clear that steam was here to stay. He explained how it became accepted that the steam engine should move with the train and not be fixed for cable haulage use and illustrated how George Stephenson became a first-class mechanical and civil engineer, with strong entrepreneurial skills and business acumen. Gradually his son Robert (who designed ‘The Rocket’ ) concentrated on the locomotive - building that side of the family interests while George managed the civil engineering contracts. Barry held our attention throughout, full of facts and figures. Clearly George was a man of vision; routes he surveyed and structures he designed are still in use today.

We enjoyed nostalgic recordings of the signature tunes of popular radio programmes dating from 1941on the 18th of December. Members nodded knowingly as they were asked by Malcolm Lewis to identify tunes, too many to recount, such as those heralding ‘Paul Temple’, ‘Dick Barton’, ‘What’s My Line’ and ‘Down Your Way’. Even ‘The Archers’ was included, with over 17,500 episodes so far and reputedly five million listeners, still. Malcolm talked knowledgeably about the composers and summarised the history of each programme, relating anecdotes about the presenters and well-known participants. It was an unusually lively and entertaining talk. But where are the memorable signature tunes of today? Theo Stening 01666 504243

Tetbury Scouts The Tetbury Scout Group has had a busy term since September. The Scouts have been working on their Fitness Challenge Badge and DIY Badge and have been working on ‘The Poppy Badge’, a badge introduced for the WW1 commemorations. Jane Haines from Tetbury History Society visited and gave them a talk on the work of the British Legion and the history around the Poppies worn on Remembrance Day. They had a walk over Rodborough Common on the 5th November, where there was a fantastic view of the fireworks in the Stroud Valley. The troop was represented at the District Quiz Night and one of our teams won the competition – they then went on to represent the District at the County Quiz and once again they won! Well done Logan, Callum, Ollie and Harry. The term was finished off with a visit to the Ice Skating Rink at Cattle Country, Berkeley. Scouts, Cubs and Beavers were hard at work selling their wares to raise funds at the Tetbury Christmas lights. Thank you to everyone that supported their stands - the money raised will buy new equipment. Coming up within the group, Cubs will be camping again after the success of last year’s camp and Beavers will embark on an exciting day trip.

Finally, we would like to welcome our new Beaver Leader, Mike Wagner. The Beavers are very excited to have a new leader and we thank Mike for giving up his time to run the group. If you would like any information in regards to Scouting, please email cubstetbury@btinternet.com Tetbury Scout Group

My son Alex is a barrister 35 years younger than I am - but his Christmas activities now are similar to mine of twenty or thirty years ago. Marriages are still breaking up; there are fights over the matrimonial home and children and parties are not immune to taking pre-emptive strikes or accusing the other party of child abuse. The problem the courts have is that as there are so few witnesses about, so it is difficult to know who to believe. The nub of the problem is that, if the

relationship has broken down, it is pretty difficult living in the same house with someone you loathe - and unless an early eviction order is obtained, it is likely that the unsatisfactory situation will continue for several months if not years. Alex therefore spent some of his Christmas break urging the courts to evict an unsatisfactory spouse, starting with the Magistrates court (not our favourite forum). The court advisor told him and the Magistrates that he did not have a case, reducing his client to tears. My recollection of the late Stephen Tumin, who became a very distinguished inspector of prisons, was being against him in front of some doddery old deputy High Court Judge. Tumin

Shots from a Lawyers Gun demanded an end to the circus and demanded a “proper judge”! Alex did just that, although in a more humble but penetrating way - and after much objection was able to obtain a telephone hearing before a senior circuit judge, which would not have been possible in my time because there was no internet to allow the Judge to read the papers. This hearing, with the sound of classical music playing in the background, was a much better forum and the client’s tears became tears of joy when the wretched husband was prevented from going near the street where she lived. (Solicitor advocates used to thrive with the Magistrates court and pressed on to get higher rights of audience but I detect that with more businesslike demands they are less keen.) On the Residential property front, times are more stressful because with cyberspace there is no hiding place. Estate agents employ assistants to pursue a lawyer’s every move. For my sins, at the end of last year I attended the National Property Law conference, to learn more about up-to-date requirements. The conference was more of a sales pitch for a new national portal “Veyo”, which is costing us solicitors several million pounds so that everyone can check up on where we are in a transaction. It may be an improvement, though, on the receipt of badgering telephone calls from agents asking us to respond on someone else’s matter! If a satisfactory answer is not given, the agent may wind up the client, who will in any event be pretty stressed-out about what is a matter of huge importance and has to be dealt with calmly. If I were younger I would opt for the injunction hearing with background classical music. Michael Hodge

Puddle Ducks Nursery The children have all settled back very well after the excitement of the Christmas break. Looking back to the end of last year, we had a very successful performance of our Nativity play. The children did very well in front of a large audience and we are proud of them all; many thanks to all the family members and friends who came to watch and support the children. Over the Christmas holidays our old and well-worn carpet was replaced by a lovely new wooden floor which has given our room a fresh look. We are very pleased with it and grateful thanks go to the Dolphins Hall Committee for agreeing to provide this for us. It has made a huge difference. Turning to the current term, January sees us begin our afternoon pre-school sessions especially for those children who will be moving to school in September this year. They follow a slightly more structured routine and are planned to help the children with some of the challenges of primary school such as changing for PE and sitting for book work (much more fun than it may sound!). As part of this preparation we follow the Jolly Phonics system of looking at letters and sounds

which is a successful programme used in many primary schools to help children in the early stages of learning letter recognition, reading and writing. Each week our planning will be focused around a particular letter and will provide learning across each of the 7 areas of learning.

History of Tetbury Society The HOTS Social evening on 3rd December in the Market Hall was much enjoyed. We were entertained by the Tetbury Community Choir who sang songs with a WW1 flavour with which we were encouraged to join in. WW1 poetry excerpts were read beautifully by Frances, Walter, Joan, Ann and Di had written a poem especially for us. Charles and Pauline Whittaker were responsible for the splendid supper and Joyce and Liam Keeting had organised the wines and nibbles. Our meeting on 8th January was the Archive Presentation, to which at least ten members brought items of interest. To mention a short selection- Di Bryan spoke about the Polish Resettlement Camp at Beverstone and showed us a photograph of a parade of Polish children in their national dress coming out of Chipping Street in about 1952. Their leader was dressed as a bear and we heard the fascinating history of the bear that Polish troops had adopted. Barry Barnes spoke about the Australian Flying Corps accident at Shipton Moyne in 1918 in which sadly two pilots were killed. We also saw photographs of Avro 504 biplanes coming through Tetbury on the way to Leighterton. Syd Mosdell spoke about

the need to rebuild the workhouse in 1904/08 and he displayed drawings for a proposed plan which was not carried out. An unusual item shown was a silver and gold pocket watch made by John Coates in Tetbury in 1759. That members had enjoyed the presentations showed in the many people who stayed on for a chance to handle the various objects we had heard about that evening.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Hi, I just thought that an update for the Advertiser readers on the Adam Philby Skatepark Fund would be worthwhile. The Skatepark Bowl is now complete apart from extra concrete skirting which will be added once the weather improves. It is much used and enjoyed and is a fitting tribute to our son Adam. It would be even better if those who use the site could keep it a little tidier!

The Patient Participation Group is aware that under new arrangements some patients are finding it difficult to access transport to take them to health appointments.

Our Fund is now directed towards Youth Projects in and around Tetbury, so please write in if your youth group has a need (Letters to Tetbury Hardware). The first money went to St Mary’s Primary School who received £300 towards play items for the playground at breaks and lunch time. The children are now enjoying these items.

If any readers are having difficulty in accessing transport please do complete the survey. Paper copies of may be obtained by phoning 01452 504989, or it can be completed online via the Health Watch website home page: http://www. healthwatchgloucestershire.co.uk/

Look forward to hearing from you. Malc and Lizzie Philby

Healthwatch Gloucestershire has also been made aware of this and has drawn up a survey so that they can address the problem.

Alison Hesketh Chair, PPG

Dear Editor, Geoff and I would like to thank the Lions, The Priory and the person who proposed us for the award of “Unsung Hero” for last month. There is no way that the Poppy Appeal could happen in Tetbury without the support of the local shops, businesses and our committed band of collectors for the house-to-house collections and the static points at Tesco, the Post Office and the Co-op, sometimes in fairly wet and cold weather. With everyone’s help we managed to raise £13,583 and 44p. When we take our meal at The Priory we shall think of you all. Many thanks Jane Haines Dear Editor,

A Tribute to K B Hancock Tetbury has lost one of its characters: Tetbury based painter, K B Hancock, sadly passed away before Christmas at the age of 89. Also known as ‘Ken the paint’ or just ‘the man with red glasses’, he had lived and worked in Tetbury since 1993. Until recently, he was to be seen in colourful clothes walking round the town, puffing one of his many pipes and popping into the vintners for a bottle of his favourite red wine. He was very private but he also loved to ‘hold court’ at the end of the day in his studio at the cost of many a burnt dinner! He was a great raconteur with innumerable stories from his fascinating life. He was born in Alcester and his father (also a painter) sent him to Paris at the age of 12 to study, until his education was

stopped by WW2. He escaped from Paris and joined the Navy with whom he was involved in Artic Convoys. After the war, he returned to Paris and later to St Ives in Cornwall where he worked amongst the well-established and now famous St Ives School of Artists. Painting was his life and he said that every day when he didn’t paint was a day of his life that was wasted forever. He adored France and it inspired his impressionist painting. His wife, Elisabeth, says “Tributes have come in from all over the world - America, Canada, Chile, Japan, Oman, Egypt, Spain, France, Italy and Australia. I had not appreciated how many people we had met in the last 34 years and how many of his paintings are scattered far and wide.” raised a lot of money for charity (including St Marys’ Church), never wanting to use his generosity for publicity. He said he didn’t want acclaim in his lifetime but he was secretly hopeful it would come after his death. He did reach the pinnacle of his career in 2005 when he was made the only British member of the National Society of Fine Art in Paris since Henry Moore in the 1950’s and he exhibited with them at the Louvre and Grand Palais from 2002.

Wherever he went, people saw that he was ‘different’ and total strangers would ask to take his photograph. American friends trotted him out for dinner parties in his tweeds as the quintessential Englishman - a part he was only too happy to play. In restaurants at home and abroad people would start to talk to him and quite a few became good friends.

His father would have been very proud of him.

Life was neither dull nor ordinary around him. He was very caring and encouraged younger people when he saw a talent in them. He quietly

A memorial service is being held on Friday 13 March at 2.00 pm in St Marys’ Church in Tetbury and all who knew him are welcome.

Happy New Year to you all! As always there are several thank you’s that need to be mentioned from the winter production – The Three Musketeers: IHS – a huge thank you to them for printing the programme, they did a wonderful job and made it look so professional. Also to Casey Rymer for producing the programme, the first time he had done this – well done Casey; the wonderful ladies who spent so many hours machining to make the fabulous costumes – Anne Smith and Jenny Miles; the stunning sets painted by Ian Smith, Anne Smith, Jenny Miles and Jason Watt; the incredible David Hudson who returned from Cornwall to do the lighting and special effects.

A special thank you is due to Alexandra Proctor, Principal of Arts Frenzy - due to the split dates of the show in December most of her students were already involved in other activities, so Alexandra and Emily Reeves stepped in and did the dancing themselves – they were fantastic! We do hope Arts Frenzy will join us again in the future. An extra BIG thank you goes to Russells Dry Cleaners, our wonderful box office – Helen you are a gem; Brian Edge for storing the A-board and carrying it out to the Market Place each day. Last but not least Gwen Hobson, sadly we did not get another hairdresser and there were characters like the Queen and Malady De Splinter who needed quite ornate hairdos. Gwen was a real star, she got into costume and then got on with the business of being hairdresser;

Dolphins Dramatic Society I think you will all agree she did a wonderful job. Gwen is ace at ringlets! Well it’s time to move on, we have already had a read through for the next production which we hope to put on near the end of April - Lady Windermere’s Fan – a comedy by Oscar Wilde. Phillip Webb will be directing this production; Phillip who played the Duke of Tottenham in The Three Musketeers was introduced to The Dolphins in 2010 by Alex Ball, he helped with stage management on The Pirates of Penzance. Since then he has been in many productions including: The Snow Queen, On the Razzle and Robin Hood (he made a fabulous Dame). He directed his first pantomime, Cinderella, in 2012; I am sure you will all remember Vincent Oblyschuk as one of the ugly sisters – prancing around in a silver dress popping cake after cake into his mouth. As you can see Phillip is very accomplished and will ensure, with the help of his Co-Director Gwen Hobson, a production that is worth coming to see. We always need people to assist with stage management, and more men! We often have trouble casting a play due to a shortage of them. If you think you could help, we really are a friendly bunch, please contact Jenny Miles 01666 503059. Dolphins Dramatic Society

Tetbury Nursery Playgroup The last week of the winter term ended with lots of celebrations and parties. The Crèche children had a party at each snack time, the toddlers had a party and the playgroup children enjoyed their party with lots of dancing, games and a visit from Father Christmas. The staff always finishes the term with a party and this time we had lots to celebrate, as we had our visit from Ofsted that went really well and our “Quality Assurance” had been completed and approved.

“The experienced staff are positive role models. Children are aware of the boundaries and expectations for behaviour because of the staff’s clear, gentle guidance”. “Partnerships with parents are strong, as the staff work closely with parents to meet children’s individual needs well”. Well done to all the staff, who have worked hard to achieve this outcome. In the crèche, toddlers and playgroup we have now started to look at the winter weather, and we are hoping for some snow

The Quality assurance is an opportunity for us to reflect on practice, looking at all the things we do well, and things that we feel we can improve on. Completing this helped us with our Ofsted visit. Ofsted spent a day with us observing how we worked as a team, as well as with the children and the parents. They also check that we are meeting all the welfare requirements. Our outcome was a “Good”. The following comments were made about our setting:

At pre-school the children are now having the opportunity to take home our “Take Home Bear” and a book to share with their family. Teresa Bell from St Mary’s school has been to visit bringing an activity with her, enabling the children to get to know staff from the big school. Raewyn Platts

St Mary’s Playgroup Well here we are, 2015..! A very Happy New Year to you all! We enjoyed a fabulously busy December at playgroup and are now well into the swing of an exciting new term. It was lovely to see the children after their Christmas holidays and hear them tell us about the family members and friends they visited - some even fly abroad to see them. They told us all about the wonderful presents they received and gave and clearly all had a wonderful festive season. It is always good to be back though and since our return we have been looking at vehicles and methods of transport. We ask the children to bring in a different ‘topic’ every week to talk about and they are enjoying learning about the different modes of transport right now. We are lucky enough to have some new toys donated from past and present parents which has given the children an even greater variety of vehicles to play with. To continue the transport theme, we have been on walks around the area looking at different types of vehicles. The children are already very knowledgeable about the various makes of cars! We even got to watch a crane and dumper truck move large blocks on a building site which was an extra bonus. With this in mind, the children have looked at maps of Tetbury, learning more about where they live and different countries around the world and the various methods of transport they use there.

children are looking forward to building snowmen. While they wait, we have made our own and hope the snow returns for us to make some proper ones outside!

know more, then please email info@ stmarysplaygroup.co.uk or visit our website www.stmarysplaygroup. co.uk for more details.

“I recently joined the MIU team, working Mondays and Fridays, I trained as a Nurse in 1991 and spent most of my working life in A&E departments and more recently in MIU departments. I’ve been around the world several times repatriating injured tourists. Tetbury is particularly special to me due to the time I can spend with patients and the quality of care that can be delivered. I’m proud of the fact that we can go the extra mile when its most needed. My particular interests are eyes, hands and knees. Outside of work, I’m a keen touring cyclist and an advanced motorcyclist. I restore/tune old motorcycles and bicycles. I believe I’m also a reasonably good French speaker” -ENP Pete

Tetbury Town Football Club

If you went back in time to the end of the Second World War, you would find Tetbury Town playing football in a very different kit to the one it wears today.

Road, on a field that is now the site of Tetbury Audi. In later years it moved to the Recreation Ground, which is where TTFC Youth teams still train and play. History does have a habit of going full circle because if you travelled back even earlier in time to before the Second World War, the club played at Preston Park, which is where the Seniors play now.

Instead of bright orange shirts and black shorts, Town’s players wore amber and black striped shirts with navy shorts and a navy jumper for the goal keeper. Thanks to former Town player and Tetbury resident Derek Walters, the club now has a permanent reminder of this era in its history because Derek has kindly donated the kit he played in when he joined in 1944. Derek, 83, remembers buying the kit from Mr. Harris’ department store for 7/6d - equivalent to 37p in today’s money. At that time clothes were being strictly rationed because of the War, so he had to obtain special sports clothes coupons from a Government Ministry in Gloucester. “I think the kit was made to order as I had to wait about three weeks for it to arrive,” he says. “I played for Tetbury Town until 1956 and the shirt was worn throughout this entire period. It is now 70 years old.” Derek’s Tetbury Town career saw him turning out for the Firsts and Seconds in several local leagues, including Gloucester

Northern Seniors. “I was also in the first Eleven that played against a team of German Prisoners of War from camps across the South West,” he says. “They had several pre-War internationals on their team, including, literally, a giant of a goalkeeper. We were totally outplayed and I think the final score was 7-0.” Back in 1944, Tetbury Town’s home ground was on London

And as for the kit – well, if you want to know why it changed to orange you need look no further than a certain TTFC committee member, Dave Bricknell. Back in 1991, when Dave was playing for Tetbury Town’s Under 12s, he entered a competition that involved correctly identifying several different kits from tiny little pictures. He won the competition and his prize was a full kit of his choice. “I chose orange and black because it was the closest match to amber and black, which Tetbury traditionally played in when my great grandfather, my grandfather and, briefly, my dad played in,” Dave says. Derek Walters’ original 1944 kit is now being mounted in a frame and will be put on display in the TTFC club house where everyone can see it. Sue Fudge

Long Newnton is a very friendly village and we are blessed with many helpful neighbours, but on the arrival about a year ago of Kevin and Linda Jones my life became much easier because of their quite exceptional kindness.

Linda would take one sister out in the wheelchair to various village happenings such as Weddings, and notably the Blessing of the Animals at the Church, and she visited them both in the Care Home in latter weeks. There have been countless little gifts of cakes, flowers, sweets and much, much more.

Until a few weeks ago I was caring for my two elderly sisters, both of whom were prone to frequent falls. Kevin and Linda used to come within a few minutes, sometimes in the night, to pick them up and ensure that all was well. Kevin introduced me to the wonders of the Web, advising on the purchase of an iPad, installing it and instructing me on how to use it and rescuing me from many ‘entanglements’! When planning a break abroad he sorted and advised on all the details of Passports, Visas, flight times and much more besides.

News from St Mary’s My granny was delighted when one of her grandchildren asked: “Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?” Mentally, she polished her halo. “No,” she said, “do tell me how we’re alike.” “You’re both old”, he replied! Children can make us laugh – and bring us up short, can’t they? They have their own take on things, and can help us all to see things differently, or afresh. I always find that having to explain things to children helps me to sort out my thoughts too … especially when it comes to God! We’re delighted at St Marys’ that our Sunday School – called “Little Fishes” – is meeting again every week during our main 9.30 service. The children learn

about the Bible story for the week, with crafts and other activities. All are welcome, so do bring your little ones along. And whether you’re young or old, don’t forget Pancake Tuesday. Then next day – Ash Wednesday – marks the beginning of Lent. We will have our special Ash Wednesday service at 7pm on Wednesday 18th February. At this service, we will be keeping the centuries-old tradition where people are invited forward for their foreheads to be marked in ash with the Sign of the Cross. We do this to show our sorrow at all we have done that hurts others and our relationship with God, and our asking for forgiveness. Then, each Sunday, our services at 8am and 9.30am will mark the journey through Lent. We are also running discussion groups each week, which we will share with all the Tetbury Area Churches

We’ve been “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” at Sir William Romney’s School Traditional, pop and rock music shared the stage when we celebrated the festive season with our annual Christmas Concert. A packed house was entertained with old favourites such as “Silent Night” and “Jingle Bells”, while more modern-day offerings from the SWR Choir included “Winter Wonderland” and “All I Want

Sir William Romney’s School

For Christmas is You!” The school’s rock group closed the show with a foottapping version of “It’s Christmas.” Music teacher Paul Mahon comments: “What we tried to achieve for this concert was a more informal approach – from rehearsals to the seating arrangements on the night. All offerings were of an excellent standard and I would like to congratulate our music students on a job well done.” Year 9 students Anna Chappell and Maisie Geers agree that all the hard work paid off on the big night. They explain: “This year

the winter concert had a different feel to previous ones. Participating students wore their own clothes, which helped them feel more comfortable and confident while giving their performances – and many things made us feel at ease when the concert started. For example, the rehearsal time students were provided with on the day – and the week before – made us feel well-rehearsed and ready to perform.”

Food for thought from catering students There’s more to event catering than sausage rolls and sandwiches, as Year 10 catering students at Tetbury’s Sir William Romney’s School have discovered in the past three months. They have created upmarket hospitality food for a wide variety of outside events, including open days, careers fairs and a Tetbury Chamber of Commerce meeting. These budding master chefs have also cooked up a storm for three local retirement homes.

Pixie Lock Ltd

“This has been an opportunity for our students to see how to cater for ‘real’ events as well as forge links with the local community,” says SWR’s catering teacher Clare Jones. “This interaction adds social skills to their curriculum.” She adds: “I knew they were good, but these events have proven just how high a standard of skills they have achieved, catering for all tastes – from a la carte lunches to finger buffets and upmarket platters.

Tetbury Neighbourhood Planning Group

some new faces and some who have worked on the plan from the outset.

We now have all the results in from the housing and needs survey issued last year and hope to publish the findings and summary shortly.

We have split the responsibilities into 7 working groups

We have had some re-grouping in the last couple of months, so it is high time for an update! Liz Farnham, who so capably kicked off the group as chairman, has sadly had to stand down because of her increased work travelling commitments. Liz did an excellent job in setting out the objectives, engaging the residents and starting the momentum. As we have seen elsewhere, these neighbourhood plans will play an ever more significant part in formulating the future for local communities. Some 1200 towns and parishes have started neighbourhood plans, of which 8 are in the Cotswolds. Malmesbury has just completed its plan, has conducted a public referendum with 90% in favour, and so has now an approved plan in place, approved by government and able to be used as evidence to refute or accept any future development.

Our next meeting will be on the 5th February – 7.30 in the council offices. We always welcome any resident who would like to know more, particularly those who are comparatively new to the town and who can bring in ideas from elsewhere. Barry Gibbs

We can provide you with a variety of products to help your day become the perfect day that you imagined. Just give us a call; we are happy to give you a no-strings preview of our beautiful items.

Whilst the allocated housing numbers in Tetbury have largely been achieved by existing planning approvals, a robust neighbourhood plan will help absorb these developments into the community. With Liz standing down, I have agreed to take on the chairmanship for the interim future, supported by a team of

A business survey also went out in December to some 300 businesses in the town and returns from these are now coming back.

Tetbury Community Choir Too Hot to Handel? The Choir had a great end to our 2014 season, singing at the Handel’s Messiah workshop in November. Along with colleagues from Sherston Community Choir we were able to hone our skills, and get useful insights and hints about performing something this demanding. Fiona and Rob Evans who lead the workshop made it seem really straightforward, and by the end of the day we gained confidence and sounded terrific. In particular, our men’s section were magnificent, and raised the roof. It is great to know we can extend our range to include more challenging pieces like this to take us up to and beyond our potential. Fiona and Rob also entertained us with some great stories about singing professionally in choirs, including The Sixteen. We are hoping to do a performance of the Messiah this year to build on our success.

TCC and SCC enjoying singing Handel’s Messiah at Christ Church Tetbury In December we sang some WW1 songs for HOTS (History of Tetbury Society) at their Christmas social. There was a lovely atmosphere – poignant as well as festive, as the songs and readings reminded us of all the WW1 commemorative events during 2014.

In November our Food Group visited the new Waitrose in Malmesbury. We were made very welcome with a glass of wine, nibbles and a taste of Heston’s Christmas cake. This was followed by a talk about the store and a behind the scenes tour. It felt like a store with a heart. We also enjoyed our Christmas supper at the Hare and Hounds. Attendance was high and there was considerable praise for the food and service. We were seated in a large room which was suitable for so many of us. Some of us travelled

there using the Tetbury minibus and we shall be using this service again as Darren was punctual and helpful. The donation of the wall hanging to Stroud Maternity Unit has been well documented in the local press and we are proud of the Needlework Group’s recognition. Under Maureen’s direction, our second Needlework group has collected 26 pillowcase dresses made by our members. These have been sent to a local collection point and will go from there to children in Developing countries.

Our meetings in December and January have both relied on local people. In December, at our Christmas social evening, Natalie Morley and her twin daughters sang for us. They were accompanied by Jonathan Adkins and in one song were beautifully accompanied by Ann - one of our members. It was a suitably festive pre - Christmas evening. We all then sang a carol and the only complaint that I have heard is that we didn’t sing more! In January we were addressed by three local business men. The evening was entitled “Tetbury works” and was an eye opener for some of us who were unaware of the number of businesses which are based in Tetbury and the surrounding area. There are 500! The first speaker was Mark Barrett of Riverview Portfolio Ltd, a chartered Accountancy firm which he chose to establish in Tetbury. He was followed by Andy Platts who lives locally. Andy is the MD of Jireh Solutions which is an outsourced IT department for businesses. Lastly, Peter Hodgson, another Tetbury resident, described the work of his company called Sureteam which is a Health and Safety Advisory team. On February 9th our talk is called “Life as a Muslim woman” (in Glos in 2015) and we welcome visitors. As usual, the meeting Investments will be at the Dolphins Hall at 7.30. Chris Gibson

We started our festive celebrations early. The owner of Café 53 David Nicholls and head chef Piotr Kwiatkowski did something amazing for the Goods Shed at Christmas. They offered to host a party for all our supporters at which they would donate the entire evening’s profits to our funds after deducting just the food costs. It was held on Friday 5th December

and attended by 47 of us. We thoroughly enjoyed the festive ambience, menu and the charming attention of the staff that night and at the end were thrilled to be presented with £ 750 by Piotr which felt a very strange but wonderful reversal. Thank you to everyone at Café 53 for a memorable evening, your generosity and the hard work of your splendid team. We had a very good turnout for the Carols in the Goods Shed on the 19th and the Avening Band accompanied us with their usual enthusiasm. This year it was wonderful to have Poppy, the vicar from St Mary’s Church to lead our prayers and remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. Our artist in residence Nicola Clark sang two lovely carols showing us she is as talented a musician as she is an artist. At the end of the evening we shared homemade mince pies and hot winter punch. Our New Year’s community walk went well with a good number turning up all eager to get trim after a Christmas of over-indulgence. Graham Cleaver was as stalwart as ever joining me early in the morning to put up signs and bollards warning drivers of the walk. He was not at all well and should have been in bed but he was determined to

Tetbury Rail Lands Trust help so out he came leaving his little dog Bill to have a lie-in, instead! The walk took about two hours and we all managed to get as far as the Trouble House and back using parts of the old railway line and some footpaths. When we got back to the Goods Shed we were rewarded with cakes, hot drinks and leftovers from Christmas so the pounds we had just walked off were all put back on again! I would like to thank H.R.H the Prince of Wales and David Wilson for allowing us to walk on the Duchy’s part of the old Railway line. The more we all use the Goods Shed the more we realize what a wonderful hub it has become for the local community. People are coming to the regular Car Boot sales as much to socialise and hang out as to buy from the stallholders. We have a very interesting programme of events taking shape for this year too, so please keep a look out for our adverts in the Advertiser and for our posters. • Tree Surgery/reduction • Tree felling/removal • Stump grinding • Planting • Council applications completed • Fully qualified and insured

Like all the best things in life, library membership is absolutely free! It has also been shown to greatly benefit your health and well being and one of the ways that libraries do this is with its Reading Well Books on Prescription. This collection of books (which may be borrowed with or without a prescription from your doctor) help you to understand and manage your health, or the health of someone close to you. With around 850,000 people in the UK now living with dementia, we are all affected by this condition in one way or another and so from 2nd February Tetbury Library will be promoting new books on dementia which will help and support people with dementia as well as their families and carers. Information on the Tetbury Memory Club will also be available. If you haven’t entered our Up-Cycle a Book Competition yet, there’s still time! Hurry along to the library, choose an old, withdrawn library book then, for a small fee (10p for Primary School students, 20p for Secondary School/6th Form students & 50p for Adults), you can turn your book into something else – anything as long as it shows that it was once a book. Return your creation to the library on or before National Libraries Day, Saturday 7th February, where it will be appraised by local artist Mary Doyle. One winner from each age group will be awarded a prize: £10 Tesco Gift Card for Primary School age, £10 Tesco Gift Card for Secondary School/6th Form age & £20 Co-op Shopping Voucher for Adult (prizes kindly donated by Tetbury Tesco and Tetbury Co-op stores).

Wacky Races When reading this you should be aware that there are only three months left before the running of the Tetbury Lions Wacky Races Soapbox Derby on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May 2015. Inspirational designs should now have been transferred from the drawing board, or paper napkin in some cases, to the workshop, garage, shed or living room if necessary. It is important that we repeat that all vehicles taking part in the 2015 event MUST comply with the specifications as laid down in the detailed rules. These are available on www.tetburywackyraces. co.uk and will be enforced on the day in the pre-race inspection. Among other things, all vehicles must include a roll bar, have a fully functional braking system on at least two wheels on the same axle and have a tow hook on the front. It is worth reminding also that from the 2015 event onwards, emphasis will be on the most “wacky” design with the support team in appropriately themed costumes. As in previous years entries will have to be limited so it is important to note that entries close on Friday 17th April 2015 or very much sooner if the entry limit is reached. Judging by the way this event has grown in just three years, this may

very well be the case and it would be a shame to have to decline entries after all the hard work that has gone into creating a Wacky Racer. With regard to teams, up to six persons are allowed per team but only two of the six are permitted to be drivers on the day. In this case there will be one practice run per driver. The purpose of this run is to enable the drivers to get the feel of the course and the handling of their Wacky vehicle. The practice run, which will begin as usual at 10.00am, will not count in the timed competition but will contribute to the race order. Another new feature for 2015 and beyond will be a bridge across the track, similar to the Dunlop bridges seen at many race tracks in Britain and elsewhere that Wacky

Racers will have to pass under. This will not be a pedestrian bridge but it will be positioned close to the pedestrian crossing, which is probably the fastest part of the course. We are happy to report that this structure is being fully sponsored by the Tetbury Tailor and Tetbury Hardware. Responding to our last article Cotswold Wealth Management, which has an office in Tetbury, have also come forward as a new sponsor for the event and will be displaying a banner all day close to the finish line. There are many other sponsorship opportunities ranging from £50 upwards so if you wish to get involved in this crazy family fun day out please call Ken White on 504189 for further details. People’s Pod We are again fortunate to have been awarded some funds - this time from Glos. County Council’s Active Together Grant - £1400 to provide three projects this year. The first is to provide dance sessions in partnership with SWR and a local professional dancer. The second is for healthy eating and wellbeing sessions at the Pod, where we will work with the young people to find and cook healthy recipes and discuss other health issues. Thirdly, we have funds to hire the Dial-A-Ride bus to take a group once a month to Westonbirt Arboretum, meeting up with the youth worker there and exploring and enjoying the woods and nature, through games and activities. We’re still waiting to hear if we have been successful with the music grants we applied for last year; I think that by now, no news is bad news. We’ll start to search for different grant bodies to see if we can raise the funds needed elsewhere. Creativity is a healthy ingredient in a person’s wellbeing, and when that creativity is shared publicly then it shares that well being too. (Just think about how you feel when you go to a show, or hear live music in the pub or busking on the streets, if it’s good of course!) It brings some energy to you, it’s tangible and you feel it in the atmosphere. That’s why we are keen to win the funds we need to help young people discover talents

within themselves and the opportunity to develop them and share them publicly. We’re choosing music this time. but it could be anything, art, photography, engineering, the list is long. This is also why we often ask via the Advertiser if there is anyone in the Tetbury community who has a skill they would be willing to share, so we can open up even more opportunities. Which brings me neatly on to the Wacky Races! What a great event this is turning out to be, we should be very proud of what the Lions are doing for our town. One way to get involved is to make and race a kart, as we have done for the past two years. There are adult teams and youth teams and we are recruiting right now for our 2015 youth team, so if you are between 12 and 17 years and interested in being part of our team then please give me a call, or pop into the Pod. You don’t have to have any special skills except, a willingness to be

S

part of a team sharing ideas and opinions, and maybe have an interest in art design or engineering. Mostly we are looking for sheer enthusiasm. This year there is a greater emphasis on the term WACKY: it’s not all about speed. This project would not be possible for us if we could not partner with some clever people at Boxer Power and Equipment. We would love to see more youth teams participating, so if you are group of young people, go find yourselves some engineers to support you in building a kart and if you are some clever adults who could build a kart, go find a group of young people to share your skills with! If you would like further information about any of the above or just about the Peoples Pod in general please call Mandy on 07968 59 19 12. Pod is open Tuesday’s and Fridays 5.15 -7.15pm. Mandy Scott

Kaiaff Health Centre Fund

We’re raising £10,000 to help refurbish the Kaiaff Health Centre

fruit and vegetable small holding. We pay Nuha about £45 per month, which provides him with full time employment sufficient to feed his family and he provides an extra pair of hands for the health centre and community as a whole.

A facility in Gambia, West Africa, which will help keep 15,000 people healthy in the local area. What have we done so far? WE’VE GOT A PROJECT BUDGET - Our local friends in Kaiaff have prepared an initial budget into which we are currently “drilling down” to obtain best value (meaning that I’ve asked lots of questions!) The budget now splits the work into three sub projects – firstly the roof and ceiling replacement @ D300,000 (£5,000), secondly doors and windows @ D116,500 (£1,941), and finally plastering and decoration @ D89,975 (£1,500). Clearly the most expensive part is the re-roofing which must be completed prior to any other works so the rains can be kept out.

WE’VE GOT A FLOOR PLAN – So that everyone involved can understand it better, we now have a scale floor plan available. The picture shows the “Lshaped” health centre with the roofed shelter in front of it; that’s used to protect patients and their families from the heat and rain whilst waiting for treatment. WE’VE RAISED SOME MONEY! –So far the money has come from individual donations, small fund-raising events and “corporate” donations primarily from Xograph Healthcare Ltd and Restoraction Ltd., our respective employers. Thanks to everyone who has helped so far. WHAT ELSE HAVE WE DONE? - We’ve supplied 230 mosquito nets to the health centre costing around £950 (about £4.00 per net). And from March have employed an old friend of ours, Nuha, as a general assistant/driver for the health centre and also to carry out various village duties such as working in the communal

Tetbury Wacky Races

CHARITABLE STATUS – We’ve again looked into this, but until such a time as we raise more than £5,000 it is not necessary, and may in any case be regarded by the Charities Commission as inappropriate due to the small size of the project. We will keep this under review - and if anybody out there would like to make a significant donation but requires us to be registered, then of course we will do so. Meanwhile the bank account and all our records are always available for scrutiny by interested donors. Since the last newsletter our total raised is up to about £2,200. Please help us with a donation, or by running a fundraising event, if you possibly can. Or come along to our School Dinner and Eleven Plus event at the Ormond on 28th February! Tetbury Hospital Charitable Trust When Gloucestershire Health Authority proposed closing down Tetbury Hospital in 1988, thousands of locals turned up to protest. The town subsequently set up an action group and within a few months had prepared a plan under which an independent charitable trust would take over and run the hospital. But it wasn’t simply a matter of making the decision, the plan needed to be financed. Through a huge fund-raising project the group raised over £1,000,000 and by April 1993 the town’s own Trust had taken over the running of the hospital. Today the Tetbury Hospital Trust is a charity which receives payment from the NHS for patient treatments - though not for the upkeep of the building. The hospital’s survival still depends on fundraising and the generosity of local people. Since the recent NHS re-organisation, the Hospital serves both Gloucestershire and Wiltshire with more than 20 consultants from both counties holding regular clinics at the Hospital. Facilities today include a Day Surgery Unit with a state-of-the-art operating theatre, Out-patient clinics, Minor Injuries Unit, Physiotherapy Unit and X Ray Department. The hospital also provides accommodation for Romney House Doctors Surgery and Tetbury Dental Practice. 95% of the hospital’s services are delivered on behalf of the NHS but they also provide a range of private medical and

supplementary treatments, including varicose vein surgery, physiotherapy and chiropractic consultations – and the hospital continues to invest in new technology to provide the best services for its community. It has recently opened a ‘One-Stop Eye-Care Clinic’ which will allow many more patients to be diagnosed and treated without the need to go to larger centres. Hospital director Zena Dalton comments, “Investing in ophthalmology equipment is one area where you can really make a difference to a person’s quality of life. Improving or stopping the deterioration of a person’s sight makes a positive contribution to their general well-being, resulting in a positive knock-on effect to all aspects of their life, and that of their family and the wider community “. And the innovation doesn’t stop there, the hospital has many new and exciting projects underway to increase the services available locally to reduce the need to travel into the larger centres. The hospital’s forward-thinking team has recently been joined by their first Medical Director, Michael Rigby. Michael has been a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at The Great Western Hospital, Swindon since 2003 and has also worked at Tetbury Hospital for over ten years. As Medical Director he ensures that the hospital continues to provide a safe, effective and efficient first-class service to all its patients. Tetbury Hospital Charitable Trust

Tetbury Tourist Information Centre Happy New Year and thank you to all who supported our Cards for Good Causes This time we had a great response and it was lovely to see so many ‘locals’. It may be uninviting out there at this time of year but there are still things going on to brighten up the dull days – plenty of day trips and theatre trips by Alex Cars, Andrew James and Marchants – all bookable here at the Tourist Information. We also have brochures for coach holidays. And if you are thinking ahead to the longer, warmer days we also have a wide range of brochures for all parts of England to give you some ideas of where to visit. However the first signs of Spring are already here ……… snowdrops are providing an uplifting display at several local gardens – Rodmarton Manor, Colesbourne Park and Rococo Gardens, Painswick to name a few. See our posters or contact us for details of opening times. Just a reminder to anybody organising an event in Tetbury or surrounding villages, please do let us know so that we can add it to our “What’s on” on our website and if you have a poster we can display it in our window – free advertising - it’s a no-brainer! We are also on Twitter as well – so feel free to add us! Sue, Jill & Jackie at……….. Thanks to the generosity of everyone who gave to the collection at Tesco just before Christmas, we were able to send £639 to Christian Aid. This amount will be matched pound for pound by the government as part of their Christmas matching scheme. So, in total, £1,278 will be sent to Kenya to help towards training health care assistants, who will care for Masai women during pregnancy and childbirth. The next big fund-raiser will of course be in May, when again we will be undertaking a house-to-house collection. Alison Hesketh
