Obituary Nina was born on August 18, 1926 in Greenville, Mississippi to William Pearl Dancy and Belle Washington Boyd Dancy, but reared in Kansas City, MO. She graduated from Lincoln High School, received her BA degree from Lincoln University, MA from Columbia University, New York, Administrative credentials from the University of Chicago, and Special Education credentials from National College, Chicago. She married William Lee Gwynn, Jr (deceased) in 1944 and they had one child together, Dacia Arlita Gwynn in 1952. She later married William Decovan Alexander (d. 1991) in 1971. Nina spent over 50 years as an educator in 35 years of which serving the developmentally disabled of all ages in a variety of positions. She was appointed to serve on Area Board 10 for the Developmentally Disabled Individuals (DDI). She also served on the Westside Regional Board, Westside Special Olympics Board, and the Direction Board for parents of Developmentally Disabled Individuals, along with many others.

Nina was a social, active woman who was deeply involved in many service organizations throughout her life. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Top Ladies of Distinction, and Women’s Federation of World Peace, NCNW, NAACP, UNCF, NAUW, Women of Los Angeles, Phi Delta Kappa and several others. Her family and friends will always remember her as an amazingly generous and caring person. Nina has received many awards, to include one presented at the United Nations for her work with Women’s Federation of World Peace. She has been active in the Dolo Coker Scholarship Foundation since its inception, serving were needed for over 25 years.

Nina is survived by her daughter, Dacia; her companion, Eugene Coleman; her grandchildren, Keione and Lawrence (Sarah); her great-grandchildren, Auzurae, Adrian, Kaeden, Lauren, and Landen; her brothers, William (Darnell, d.), Felix (Mildred, d.), James (Barbara), and Earl; her nieces, Antonia (Steve), Winnona, Carla (Calvin,Sr), Rhea (Harper), Cheryl, and Stacy; nephews, William, Jr., Frank, Darryl, Gwaine, James, Jr. (Wanda), and Earl (Melissa), Delano; grand nieces and nephews, cousins, and many close friends. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Belle and William Dancy; her husband, William Alexander; her sister Rose; her nephew, Isaac; and nieces, Kimberly and Gerri.

Nina was many things to many people, a regal, talented and creative soul. She lived life and lived it to the fullest. A woman of strong faith, and conviction, she made everyday an opportunity to learn something new, and loved to share her vast experiences with others. All who came into her presence will miss her, as she was truly one of a kind. We will carry each and every memory of her in our hearts.

We, the members of Nina’s family, want to express our heartfelt thanks to our many friends and loved ones for everything that you have done for our family in this our time of sorrow.

Your kindness and affection has truly helped make this celebration of Nina’s life a joyous one.
