All About Mining In a nutshell, although it is an undeniable that mining affects our world enormously, we ought not to demonize its practice while it constantly benefits a large majority of people.

What is Mining?

Mining is the extraction from the earth of precious minerals or other geological resources usually from the deposit of an orebody, lode, vein, seam, reef or placer. Such deposits constitute a mineralized package of economic interest to the miner.

Metals, copper, oil shale, gemstones, granite, chalk, dimensional stone, rock salt, potash, gravel, and clay are the ores recovered by mining. Mining is necessary to acquire any material that can not be grown or generated by agricultural processes.

Types of Mining SURFACE MINING This method includes (a) open caste mining (b) strip mining and (c) alluvial mining. It is being used to mine the minerals that are found closer to the earth's surface.

Strip Mining

Alluvial Mining

The ore is very near to the surface of the land. To mine the ore, these layers have to be removed. The steps in strip mining are similar to open-pit mining

Used to extract minerals by panning or dredging minerals like tin and gold which are sometimes mixed with alluvium in the river bed.

Open cast Mining It involves the digging out of minerals that occur on the surface of the Earth

Underground Mining

Drilling

Ores are extracted from greater depths beneath the surface. Underground mining is usually more expensive than the surface mining.

Used to extract minerals like oil and natural gas.

Oil rigs are used for drilling oil wells.

Possible Advantages of Mining

Enormous economic earnings (through exportation, private contracts)

Extraction of essential resources (e.g. natural gas, oil, minerals, etc.)

Job offers/opportunities for locals
