SIERRA MAR STAND OFF By Dave Bull

Local Businesses Fight Admin Co

from front page Business owners in the Sierra Mar Square in Gran Alacant arrived to open up on the morning of the 7th of March to a notice pinned to their doors stating that they would have to remove any table and chairs (and anything else) from the central terrace or risk losing anything left behind. The

reason? The administration company which looks after the urbanisation had decided (seemingly autonomously) that the central terrace, which is highly popular with locals, was to be changed into a childrens’ play park! This, out-of-the-blue, statement shocked owners and employees alike and concerned for the future of their businesses they spoke to lawyers who reassured them that they all had perfectly

legal businesses with the correct permissions to be trading as they were. The businesses have been in the centre of the Urbanisation since it was built in 1993 and, in fact, are not officially part of the same urbanisation as Sierra Mar, and therefore do not come under its rules and regulations for issues such as this. A few nights later a vigilant worker from the square noticed a build up of heavy machinery and large decorative stones (to be used to block the entrance to the square) at 1.00am in the morning! The construction workers stating that they had been hired to start at 2.00am. The police were called and pointed out that the work was not going to start that night and the builders should leave, which they did. Until a few days later when they returned, ready to go again. This time an infuriated lawyer for the businesses turned up (as did the police once more) and after making them aware of the law, and the fact that nothing would be happening to the square on the instructions of the administration company, he declared that it was in fact intim-

+34 966 699 441 idation´on behalf of the administration firm for a court case that they lost against the businesses 18 months ago. Previously, the businesses had been informed by the company that they needed to pay a table rent for the use of the terrace, which they all did for a good few years until it came to light that it really wasn’t necessary to pay as they already owned the terrace they were paying for! A court case

followed and the local businesses won, leaving this administration company with a large amount to pay back. One business owner who has dealt with them before stated, ‘they like to intimidate, it’s their style but they won´t win this one either.’ It’ll be interesting to see what happens next but the Sierra Mar businesses have the support of many happy regulars and of course we’ll be here to help too!

SEWAGE LEAK IS POSSIBLE HEALTH RISK A sewage leak from the car park of the Plaza Mayor is causing locals and the businesses distress as nothing seems to get done about it. Having been informed by at least one local resident over three weeks ago the area remains the same. Apart from the health issues it is extremely unpleasant and should have been dealt with immediately and we´ll be writing to the Town Hall to see what they are doing about it.

A LOAD OF RUBBISH

NOT A SLIPPERY SLOPE

Locals are complaining after the Easter break as the communal bins ended up, as they do every year, overflowing with rubbish. Because of the huge influx of people at times like these the amount of rubbish can sometimes be more than double the norm. Residents are pleading with the authorities to make provision for these busy times, when the area fills up, for extra lorries to empty the bins rather than letting it sit around in the sun all day encouraging vermin.

Parents are unhappy that the childrens’ park in Avenida Noruega still has not been fully opened. Following corrosion on the connecting tube of the two slides the apparatus was closed off with barriers and has now sat like that for over three months. A group of parents I met up with said that it’s not fair on their kids who don’t understand why they can’t use it. Nobody seems to know what is causing the delay to the repairs but as ever we´ll be sending something about it to the town hall.

Town Hall Block N332 Changes PLAY ON MAESTRO FACEBOOK POLL New access changes to eliminate accident black-spot need more thought say Town Hall The layout project to reroute the N-332 accesses and the actual road as it passes through Santa Pola, provisionally approved by the Ministry of Public Works, does not solve the problems of traffic management, road safety and secondary networks, claimed Santa Pola Town Hall. They have created a technical report which also proposes a series of improvements and even a general rethinking of the project. The planned action aims to create a new access to Santa Pola from Alicante that crosses the N-332 through an underpass, connecting the existing roundabout of the Ronda de Santa Pola with a new roundabout. However, the excessive magnitude of the work does not solve the existing problems. With the new access, the current incorporation from the Ronda de Santa Pola to Cartagena would be eliminated, and without replacement, which would force all the traffic to circulate along the Avenida de Levante and Carretera de Elche (where ALDI is located) to access the roundabout of the link with the road from Elche to Santa Pola. The project does not propose a solution for traffic management purposes nor has it studied the consequences of this deviation on local traffic, which would cause serious congestion and road safety problems by using the only access to the urban area of the city. The Town Hall´s technical reports propose a braided section with double lane between the two filter lanes, or the creation of a second filter lane on the right bank, since there is sufficient space. As

for the traffic study, this should be expanded with an analysis of the capacity of the complete system of the new link, including the intersection of the CV-865 and the traffic brought into Santa Pola by the Elche road.

FAKE EHIC CARDS WARNIING UK officials call for investigation into European health insurance card program Scheme is ‘open to fraud,’ politicians say, after British newspaper acquired cards under fake names. U.K. lawmakers are calling for an inquiry into the country’s system for issuing European health insurance cards after a British newspaper showed it’s “easy” to apply for cards using fake information. One newspaper successfully applied for EHIC cards with names such as “Donald Trump” and “Theresa May” and a fake national identification number, according to an article published late Sunday. The program allows card holders to get emergency treatment while travelling and working abroad in the EU. If the fake British cards had been used to acquire health care on the Continent, EU countries would have been entitled to bill the U.K.’s National Health Service for the care. “This loophole has to be investigated, including actual costs, and closed,” Sarah Wollaston, Tory chair of the health committee in the House of Commons, tweeted. Jonathan Ashworth, Labour’s shadow health secretary, also told the Sun he’d like an inquiry into the matter.

‘Pubs’ of the Valencian Community will be able to have live musics without special permission The regulations also enable the Generalitat to declare events of “public interest” Pubs, clubs or bars with music licences may, from now on, hold musical performances (concerts) without having to ask for special permission from the Generalitat as they have had to do, officially, up to now. This is part of the new public entertainment law that has been developed for situations where the need to request a specific authorisation was established if a “complementary activity” to the usual one was organised. Previoulsy, live performances were authorised, but musical ones were explicitly prohibited. With the changes introduced, however, the premises that have a main activity that incorporates musical entertainment may include musical performances provided that “the acoustic limitations imposed” by the current regulations are respected. In other words, don’t turn that volume up too far! Having said all that, it will be the Generalitat that will have the last word in what it refers to certain musical or cultural events. DON’T MISS - Mobile ITV Centre in Santa Pola until 18th May - Next to the Sports Centre on the Elche Rd

Recently we have been running a few polls on Facebook and there are some interesting results. We’d love to hear your opinion too, here below is the result of our poll about whether locals think the local authorities really do enough for residents in Gran Alacant.

Local People

One Way Migrant Malcolm Palmer Is a well-known figure in ornithological circles, writing a regular column in the Costa Blanca News, for the last twenty years or so. He has lived in Santa Pola, where ETA demolished his apartment, for over ten years, but now prefers the inland peace of San Vicente, where he lives with his Murcian wife, Juani, surrounded by family, including numerous grandchildren. He still finds time to go out and study his beloved birdlife, and is a founder member and past president of the Costa Blanca Bird Club. His other passion is sport, and he follows the usually sad fortunes of Doncaster Rovers, his old home-town team, and the richer life of Real Madrid, whose games he seldom misses on television. He is a firm believer in European unity, and speaks, as he says, half-decent French and German, as well, of course, as Spanish. A lifelong socialist, he prefers it to be spelt with a small ‘s.’ I’ve been asked why I chose to write my auto-biography. It’s a good question. I’m not famous, nor even infamous. Daft about sport, I have always been, (though never a lot of good at it) I was, I suppose, reasonably good at whatever I put my mind to, workwise, but my lifelong love

Gran Alacant News

has been………birds. In fact my other published works have been bird-guides. Then it struck me that my rather up-anddown personal life might be worth a few lines, so chapters began to emerge, then to merge into something resembling a book, so that’s it. Bits of it may make you laugh, and you may well question my moral fibre, but I have gone out of my way not to offend or damage anyone, altering names where necessary. Copies of Malcolm’s very funny and interesting book about life as an expat in Spain, ‘One Way Migrant’ are available from Gran Alacant Services (Above La Piedra) for only €6.50.

Saving lives: eCall mandatory in new car models from end of March

eCall in-vehicle system automatically dials 112 in the event of a serious road accident Enables rescue services to decide promptly on type and size of operation needed The aim is to save lives and reduce the severity of injuries Emergency call devices that automatically alert rescue services to car crashes will have to be fitted to all new models of cars and light vans as of 31 March. Reducing road deaths and the consequences of injuries have long been one of the European Parliament’s priorities. MEPs passed the eCall deployment legislation on 28 April 2015. As of 31 March 2018, all new vehicle types will have to be fitted with this life-saving technology. Olga Sehnalová (S&D, CZ), who steered the legislation through Parliament, said: “The eCall system will help to increase the safety of road users by significantly reducing the arrival time of rescue services in the event of a major accident. Unfortunately, the number of deaths on European roads is still unacceptably high”.

granalacantnews@gmail.com “With eCall, emergency services’ response time will be reduced by 50% in rural areas and 40% in urban areas, leading to a reduction of fatalities estimated at up to 2,500 saved lives per year. The legislation has made the system based on a public emergency call using the European emergency number 112 and operating across borders”. “Both member states and manufacturers have been given enough time to prepare infrastructure and technologies, so that the eCall will start to work immediately to deliver its major benefit - to increase the safety of citizens traveling anywhere in Europe”. Background Around 25,500 people lost their lives and 135,000 were seriously injured on EU roads in 2016, according to road safety statistics. While this was 2% down on the 2015 figure, the reduction may be too small to ensure that the EU meets its target of halving road fatalities between 2010 and 2020. In 2016, most road fatalities (55%) occurred on rural roads. On average only about 8% happened on motorways and 37% in urban areas. Car occupants account for the largest share of victims (46%). Vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, together account for the same share and are particularly exposed in urban areas. 25,500 Number of people who lost their lives on EU roads in 2016

NOT FANTASTIC PLASTIC

As the dark, dreary days of winter ease themselves away like an old man climbing from an armchair, slowly but surely, spring gets ready to stick its nose into our lives; it seems even slower this year, both ready to depart and lead us into the lazy, crazy days of summer. This year we have a huge problem to contend with, that of plastic pollution. Most of us saw the series Blue Planet, and most of us were horrified to see how we are polluting our home, and if you weren’t horrified or at least shocked you need a compassion transplant. Now we are all getting our bodies beach ready for the annual stroll along the catwalk of duckboards, begging the sun to tan us to a gorgeous golden bronze without frying us to lobster red. This year, though, as you sashay in your flip-flops with your frozen plastic bottles of water in your beach bag, and your plastic packets of crisps or cheesy things, cast your eyes to the left and right. I don’t mean at the lovely beings stretched out on the beaches waiting to be admired, unless you are a dirty old man, or woman and just there to letch, but at the plastic bits lying around. Everything is there from little mermaid models to combs, all lost or cast away on the beach, but mostly you will see plastic bottle lids, and crisp packets. In fact, if you look hard enough and it’s plastic, it will be there, of course, all of these things lie between the discarded fag ends - another story. Collecting plastic waste near the coast is the most effective cleanup method says ‘The Guardian UK’, but we can go one better, don’t throw it away in the first place. Cruise ships are one of the largest polluters, they tip everything overboard with nary a thought, I say it’s time we started to think. Instead of the frozen bottles of water that you have to wait to melt, why not take a flask of iced water? Even if you buy the flask on your holiday and leave it behind in your rented apartment for someone else to use afterwards, it will be cheaper than all the bottled water and no waste. If you can’t get through the day without a crisp fix, make sure your packets don’t blow away on the beach and end up in the sea. If every one of us who takes plastic to the beach packs it up and picks up any lying around, and pops it into our bag and then deposits them in the plentiful supply of bins, all collected and emptied daily, it will start to make a difference, As Lao Tzu once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”. Let’s take that step. For the adventurous walkers, take an extra bag with you and pick up any bits you see on your walk. Not only will you feel great for walking, but you can pat yourself on the back for there is one, two, or twenty, fewer pieces of plastic. If we leave it for someone else it will end up in our oceans, which in turn ends up in our food, and then in our children’s and grandchildren’s, and maybe not for ad infinitum, stomachs if we don’t act now.

LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN!

KNOW YOURSELF …..AND ELIMINATE STRESS.

Page 9

By Violet King

We all experience stress in our lives to some degree. We do not, however, all have to suffer from it, allowing it to interfere with and invade our life so as to control us. It may interest you to know that we can learn to let go of stress, while some hold on to it, allowing it to either plague their health, or disrupt their relationships. These people can become ill. Perhaps, however, stress is not the cause of the illness so much as not being able to accept and love ourselves.. Almost every one handles the same stressful situation differently. The differences can only be the individual’s attitude towards stress. The way we deal with stress says more about ourselves than about the stressful situation that threatens us. We need to build ourselves up, and this CAN be done very simply if you are determined to do it. The challenge with dealing with stress is not so much to cope with living in the world, but to cope with living with oneself!!. Self-Knowledge Self knowledge is a wonderful thing. You cannot control yourself until you know yourself. You cannot expect to understand the world and the motivations of others until you look deep into yourself. Sadly, it is not possible to love yourself if you do not understand yourself. Self-responsibility The failure to be true to oneself, to live one’s life for one’s own reasons, instead of living it for the hopes, and the expectations of others, is the common cause of stress which often manifests as depression and powerlessness or as resentment and anger, and is an obvious symptom of our inner disharmony. Self-responsibility also demands that we put an end to the practice of finding fault and putting blame on circumstance and on the action of others, In the end, we must look to ourselves. Self-organization An essential aspect of self-organisation is the ability to create your own space. There will always be people who will want your time and energy, but it important for you ,and for them, that they understand and respect that you are entitled to your own space. Very often it is our failure to attend to our self and own personal space which makes us susceptible to suffer from stress. Self-appreciation People who suffer from stress are very often impatient with themselves, have a low self-esteem, are too self-critical, experience a sense of inner frustration which tells them they should be doing better than they are, and may not even recognise their own achievements. They have lost the ability to love and appreciate themselves for what they are. They are compelled to achieve, achieve and achieve again, but each time the achievement can feel empty. They are looking to the world to give them fulfillment instead of being able to give it to themselves. Basically, the challenge of stress is not so much to do with others, but with living with ourselves. The world appears for the most part a turbulent, and ever-changing place; I do believe, though, that we can find peace within our selves. The answers to our problems can be found more often within us than in any other place. Till the next time!

ARCADE CLASSICS BY FRAN SANCHEZ

10 CURIOSITIES OF PAC MAN 5. Pac-Man dethroned Mario Bros: In a survey conducted in the United States it was found that 94% of adults recognized the yellow glutton. This figure exceeds by one point the recognition that Mario Bros. has. Video: YouTube / BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe

Find out about some of the curiosities of Pac Man, an icon in the history of video games. 1. Pac-man is an incomplete pizza: The creator of the video game, Toru Iwatani, confessed in an interview, that he was inspired by a pizza for the design of Pac-Man. When the Japanese took a slice he realized that the silhouette of the pizza could be the character he was looking for.

6. It is the best-selling chip set: 293 822 video game machines were installed around the world between 1981 and 1987. Namco, the company Iwatani worked for, employed eight people and 15 months to install the original game. This is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.

2. Its original name was Puck-Man: Iwatani thought to baptize the game as Pakkuman, for the onomatopoeia ‘paku-paku’ that simulates the sound of a person chewing.

10. ‘Pixels’: Pac-Man became the villain of the movie ‘Pixels’, some extraterrestrials assume as war declaration the classic arcade video games. Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad will have to face Pac-Man so that he does not eat the Earth.

3. For the gender equity in the world ‘gamer’: At first, Pac-Man was thought of as a game for girls. In fact, one of the strategies to attract women was the choice of names for the ghosts Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde, which gave them a tender personality. Its creator stressed that it is a universal game that appeals to both older adults and children, both female and male. Also, Ms. Pac-Man (1982) was the first female character in the history of video games. According to Iwatani, in fact Pac-Man was going to be a woman at first. 4. A game without end, or almost: The 8 bits of capacity that technology allowed in 1980 made it impossible for Pac-Man to be an endless game. The arcade has 256 levels, after overcome an error occurs: half of the screen becomes illegible, which prevents the person from continuing the game.

9. Record score: How much is the maximum that can be achieved in this game? Exactly 3 333 360 points. That was the score that Billy Mitchell obtained in 1999 and he was awarded the recognition of the first player to reach the perfect score. After him, the records are measured taking into account the time it takes the player to get the perfect score.

7. An expensive doodle: For the 30th anniversary of the game, Google gave him an interactive banner, which allowed users to play the arcade. It was available for 48 hours, during which it is estimated that visitors played around 500 million hours, a real loss of productivity for companies. 8. TV star: The character of Namco starred in two television series, in 1982 and in 2013. However, these are not his only appearances on the small screen, there are also cameos in ‘The Simpsons’, ‘Friends’, ‘Futurama’ ‘,’ The Mupets’, among others.

Funny One...!

A man left for work one Friday afternoon. Instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend hunting with the boys and spending all his wages. When he finally got home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his very angry wife. After two hours, she stopped nagging and said: ‘How would you like it if you didn’t see me for two or three days?’ He replied: ‘That would be fine with me.’ Monday went by and he didn’t see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. Thursday, the swelling went down just enough for him to see her a little out of the corner of his left eye.

SPORTS REPORT

FOUR NATIONS FOR THE CHAMPIONS’ SEMIS.

Close! Only Liverpool made it through the quarters with some comfort, as their strike-force, led by in-form Egyptian Mohammed Salah, crushed league leaders Manchester City at Anfield, then eased past them in the return match, which saw Pep Guardiola incurring the wrath of Spanish referee Mateu Lahoz and getting his marching orders. German leaders Bayern had to pull out all the stops to beat Sevilla by the odd goal in the Andaluz capital, and then held firm to a goalless draw in Munich. Barcelona certainly thought they had done enough, beating Roma 4-1 at home, helped not a little by two own goals from the visitors. But their embarrassment was evident when, in Rome, Edin Dzeko led the Italian side to a famous 3-0 victory, and classification. Real Madrid was another side to take a big advantage to the return leg, their 0-3 win over Juventus including an extraordinary goal by Cristiano Ronaldo from an over-

head kick. But at home for the return, they sadly missed their suspended captain Sergio Ramos, and looked all at sea as Juve helped themselves to the three goals they needed to level the tie. When it seemed too late to react, Real surged forward, won chances, and, deep into injury time, were awarded a penalty, which Cristiano Ronaldo (who else?) crashed home to take the whites through with a huge sigh of relief. Semi-finalists: Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Real Madrid & Roma.

‘JIFFYGATE’ CONTNUES UK Sport will not seek money from Team Sky and British Cycling to help pay for the UK Anti-Doping investigation into the ‘jiffy bag’ delivered to Sir Bradley Wiggins at a race in 2011, says chief executive Liz Nicholl. A report by MPs said UK Sport should

determine what Team Sky and British Cycling should pay Ukad to cover the costs of a 14-month investigation made “longer and harder” by their failure to keep proper records. Ukad’s investigation, which closed in November, was unable to determine whether the medical package that arrived at the Criterium du Dauphine in 2011 contained a legal decongestant or, as alleged, Triamcinolone, which athletes are banned from using during competition. In a letter revealed by BBC Sport in January, Ukad claimed its enquiry was “hindered” and may have even been “potentially compromised” by British Cycling’s failure to report doping allegations sooner. Asked about trying to get compensation from the two parties involved in the investigation, Nicholl reiterated: “It’s not a matter for UK Sport. “It’s rather complex because Team Sky doesn’t receive any public funding. “Our relationship is with British Cycling and what we’ve seen from them is an absolute commitment to having a very strong action plan which is going to deliver over and above from any recommendations they’ve received.”
