European Fuel Prices

Update June 2018: World oil prices are heading back towards the $80 a barrel level now, and petrol (not diesel) in much of the near Continent is starting to look pretty expensive to us poor Brits. From having long been one of the most expensive places in Europe to buy petrol, the UK is now only just above the middle of the range: you’ll pay more for petrol in eleven other EU countries, including all our main neighbours: Belgium, Italy, Holland and even France now charge a fair bit more than the UK. Obviously the weak pound is the main reason pushing up the impact of Euro-denominated prices. Is it a tribute to our competitive supply.

NEW SCHOOL FOR GRAN ALACANT

Two days after the end of the school year in Gran Alacant, both parents and teachers are eagerly waiting for this area of Santa Pola to have more educational facilities in order to decongest the overflowing Vicenta Ruso school, which currently has more than 900 schoolchildren. For this to happen the council has to alter the official use of the land on which it is planned to build the second school. Following a decree from the Mayor’s office, a resolution that is favourable to the strategic environmental and territorial report prepared by the technicians has been issued to propose the modification of point 11 of the General Plan of Urban Planning, which affects the 13,000 square metre plot on which this school will be built in Calle Monte de Santa Pola. With this change, land use will change from being of public service use to educational use as requested by the town hall. The proposal, which was passed last Thursday, will be presented at the next plenary session or extraordinary session, scheduled before the end of the month, to expedite the process. Even so, it is the Valencian Government that has the final say to approve the modification definitively. The town hall argue that the environmental reports are favourable because they have studied the buildings in a nearby radius, and this does not present any problems, as there are no radio antennas or mobile telephone facilities nearby or (really..?) establishments such as petrol stations, which in this type of case can delay the procedure to give green light to the change of the urban plan.

GRAN ALACANT CLINIC INVESTIGATION

Santa Pola asks its residents to open their doors to the Aquarius refugees

Loreto Cascales denies that she has plotted against fellow party colleagues Before the news published in digital media, in comments made on social networks where they say that the national deputy of PP Loreto Cascales has appeared in the case of the Gran Alacant Clinic for plotting against councillors of her party, she wanted to clarify, “On the one hand, in no case have I appeared as implicated in the preliminary proceedings in the Court of Instruction No. 2 of Elche, related to the investigation of the Gran Alacant Clinic and the development of the existing concession on the Clinic. Also, in no case have I requested that anyone be declared as a witness nor implicated any person or directed actions against those involved in the case, since my appearance in the judicial proceedings is of pure interest.” Cascales’ solicitor has contacted the media and the wrong publication will be subject to further rectification and the court has proceeded to rectify the error of the appearance of her name as a complainant in the ruling issued on May 30th, in which the citation of certain witnesses was agreed. The deputy fully trusts the administration of justice and hopes that these facts are fully clarified in the near future.

The Diputación de Alicante offers the refugees a home, while Alcoy, Elche and finally Alicante have also announced that they will promote the reception of these people The fishing town of Santa Pola has taken another step and asked residents “who want to and can” to take some of the 629 refugees who have been arriving on board the ship Aquarius at the port of Valencia. Councillors in Santa Pola have said that they will make a “public announcement” so that residents can understand what needs to be done in order to find temporary shelter for these people in private homes or other establishments. Said Samuel Ortiz, alderman for the area. “Santa Pola lacks public spaces that do not allow us to provide a short-term solution to the housing problem,” Ortiz reminded people that Santa Pola has been the first municipality in the province

of Alicante to join the European project Solida which includes destination countries of migrants and refugees such as Greece, Malta, Italy or Spain, among others. As a result of this project, in March the town was able to carry out a simulation with the different agencies involved to improve the reception protocol for people in small boats. Santa Pola was already synonymous with solidarity following the summer of 2006 when the crew of the fishing boat ‘Francisco y Catalina’ rescued 51 immigrants in a boat that went adrift. After being rejected by Malta, the nearest country, Spain opened its doors and the Spanish government allowed its landing a week later in Alicante. Anyone who is in a position to help refugees, should send an email to cooperacion@santapola.es and the session will study each case.

ANOTHER SUPERMARKET ROBBERY IN GA

HOLA, HOLA, HOLA.

Woman left shaken after LIDL car park robbery

The Guardia Civil visits the Vicenta Russian CEIP to meet youngsters

The Civil Guard showed off their equipment at the Gran Alacant school, CEIP Vicenta Ruso, for the children of the school, within the so-called Master Plan for coexistence and improvement in the safety of educational schools and their environment. In it, about three hundred students, between three and six years old, received road safety classes, both inside and outside the car, as well as the importance of protecting nature and contact with other living beings. To do this, the Civil Guard moved a Citizen Security Unit, a contribution from the Cynological Service, a contribution from the Traffic detachment and a grant from the Nature Protection Service.

Following our report in the last issue about an elderly lady being robbed, it has happened again. This time another lady had her purse stolen in the Lidl car park after answering a young woman’s request for directions to the post office. The woman asked if the lady could speak English and when she replied yes she was asked to get out of the car and point directions to the post office. After she got out to help the woman reached in and grabbed her purse containing 100 euros and her bank cards, on which the thief racked up over 2,000€ on online purchases. The lady, who needs an oxygen supply 18 hours of each day, was left very shaken and wasn’t helped when the local police turned her away, telling her to return with a translator.

That day, the youngest of the school, in addition to training on the safety of pedestrians or the systems of retention and security inside the car, had the opportunity to talk with those responsible for safeguarding the protection of nature, in line with the works that the students carry out weekly in the ecological gardens of the school and, what caused more excitement among them though was they could meet two dogs trained by the Civil Guard that assisted the Cynological Service. The students of the school finished the day with a look at the different means of transport with which the Civil Guard works, making use of sirens and other acoustic and lights, as well as putting themselves at the controls of patrol cars and motorcycles. At the end of the day a personalised diploma was given to each student for their attendance.

BUDDING THIEF? A restaurant in Avenida Escandinavia was the victim of a bizarre robbery sometime around the 16th of June. Two plants with yellow petals were taken by someone who had clearly taken a shine to them, or perhaps was in the dog house with their partner and needed something to make the peace? Whatever the reason, it seems very odd and totally immoral to steal other peoples property whatever the value, which in this case was a total of about four euros! Keep them peeled folks!

Ex-Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy comes back to his old job in the town

NO BUTTS... ...IT’S DANGEROUS

The former leader of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, joined the office where he has a job held for him from the time when he left to go to Madrid. He takes over his old job as the registrar of property on the 19th of June. He was photographed alongside local residents walking through the town with Francisco Riquelme, who occupies the same office , which were then shared across social networks. “We did not know anything. It has caught us by surprise. We have heard about some WhatsApp groups “, explained the local PP president of Santa Pola and national deputy, Loreto Cascales, “We are delighted that a person who has been until recently the leader of Spain returns to his work life with total normality, without making any fuss or public announcements, like the man he is. It should always be like this. It is an example of which many should take note,” she said. Rajoy resigned last month after being evicted from the government by the motion of censure of the socialist Pedro Sanchez. The former Prime Minister has requested his re-entry into the body of property registrars. His place, which he obtained by opposition until the age of 24 years, has been waiting for him since then. “We believe that he has come to enjoy his new work life, like any citizen,” said Cascales.

As readers will know, a few weeks ago there was a fire on the N332, NEAR THE ENTRANCE TO the lighthouse road and it’s still possible to see the consequences of it. A reader tells us that they witnesses a driver of a blue Nissan van throwing a burning butt out of the window in the same area, with the consequent danger that this entails, as well as being a crime. If you see anyone doing this report them to the Guardia Civil, let’s help look after our local environment.

ROCKING THE URB

Photo courtesy of La Marina Gossip (Facebook page)

Opinion divided amongst locals on the controversial event Residents living on the La Marina Urbanisation were divided over the rock festival held at the beginning of June in the Consum Square. Many took to Facebook to either vent their anger or defend the controversial annual event, this years is reported to be the final one. According to the Town Hall the yearly cost for residents living on the La Marina Urbanisation is €20,000 and with the idea of the vent to raise funds for good causes it seems that the accountants at the town Hall are not doing their figures as the festival last

year raised only €5,300. Angry locals said the money was a waste with suggestions of just donating monies directly to the charities and the rest of the money spent on cleaning up the area. One of the issues seemed to be the type of music chosen for the event, Hard Rock music which, it was alleged, was hardly in keeping with the demographics of the local population, in other words the average age of residents in the area is not the type of generation that necessarily enjoys loud rock music into the early hours. Although they may well have done when they were younger?

Gran Alacant News

The late finish, 4.00am, angered others with many claiming the Town Hall were ‘hypocrites’ who allowed loud music into the morning hours when it suited them but meanwhile stopped other bars in the area from holding live events or restricting the noise level and hours. Defending the event residents claimed that the complainers should be more tolerant stating that it was ‘only one night per year’ and that nobody have ever claimed it as a charity event, blaming peoples’ confusion

with a Torrevieja festival. Others declared that it brought some life to the area and that people should remember that they too were young once. Some wrote that they could hear the concert but that it wasn’t too loud and wasn’t a problem while others commented that they could not sleep because of the noise. It’s true you can’t please all the people all of the time and the Rock Festival seems to be a perfect example of that by splitting local residents and dividing opinion on the event.

Some Things Never Change Take a look at the images which were taken 50 years apart! It’s a world where we constantly see change, and not always for the best in many poeple’s opinion, but not far away is a little gem, the Hostal Maruja on El Pinet beach, that hasn’t changed at all since 1960. Just take a look at the two images and how little difference there is. The top one was taken in 1960 and the other in 2010 by local photographer Mark Welton

ALICANTE BUILDINGS NOT EARTHQUAKE PROOF

University of Alicante study reveals that the buildings from the sixties and seventies on the A licante coast do not resist the shock of an earthquake Results show that the authorities should consider a comprehensive technical inspection in buildings to analyse the degree of deterioration and perform the necessary intervention and reinforcement to ensure structural safety Many of the buildings on the Alicante coast were built in the 60s and 70s with materials of much lower quality than today’s, with limited consideration for durability requirements and earthquake proof measures. The wind causes deterioration to a greater extent the buildings on the coast made of concrete and steel due to the salt content. A University of Alicante research group has recently published a study of seismic behaviour of 1960’s buildings exposed to marine environment in which they analyse in depth some buildings, located on the coast of Alicante, built in the sixties and seventies, concluding that these properties will not resist the effect of an earthquake. The scientific study focuses on the analysis of some reinforced concrete buildings located on the Alicante

coast. However, as Ivorra Chorro confirmed, “it is something that happens, more often than not, among the buildings on the Mediterranean coast, particularly in Alicante”. They are 15-floor buildings from the 1960s and 70s. In that period, quake-proof building regulations were known but not applied. Buildings at that time were constructed without taking earthquakes into account or the action of the wind, which deteriorates concrete and steel to a greater extent due to due to airborne sea salt. The expert highlights the reduced quality of the materials with which they were built. According to current measures, these properties are not strong enough to resist an earthquake. It is noteworthy that these buildings were constructed without considering possible seismic actions which, since the 70s, is mandatory in the Alicante area. The working team, made up of engineers and architects, has made use of the maps provided by the Alicante city council. They have verified that these maps correspond to the buildings constructed and, following that, they have built a calculation model to provide evidence of the deterioration that would occur to both the original building and the building in the event of an earthquake.

GOVERNMENT TAKES ITS TOLL

Page 11

THE TIGER MOSQUITO

AP7 to be toll-free up to Tarragona The Minister of Public Works working within the new Government of Spain last week made a statement to Spanish press concerning the toll charges on the nation’s motorways. He declared that all the current tolls situated on the AP7 motorway going from Alicante up as far as Tarragona will stop charging drivers when the current contract with the operating company the motorway terminates at the end of December 2019. So good news for drivers and starting from the 1st of January 2020, all current sections charging a toll on the A7 motorway will return to Government control and will become free to drive along.

KEEP BUG-EYED THIS SUMMER High risk of cockroaches due to weather and rising temperatures along with high humidity following heavy rainfalls over the past few months are believed to be the cause for the increase in the number of cockroaches in urban areas. The Spanish board of health has stated that will be a “high risk” of plagues of cockroaches all over Spain this summer. The board of health has recommended that people take preventive measures such as making sure food is not left out and water is not left to stagnate. Fixing cracks in tiles and spraying suspect areas are other measure recommended by the board who went on to warn that the cockroaches are more than a risk to hygiene. They can also contaminate food supplies and increase the risk of people catching salmonella. If anyone finds infested areas, they are advised to call pest control companies as attempts to clear the area using domestic pesticides often just move the problem elsewhere. Or in some cases make the situation worse. According to reports an American ‘super cockroach’ species has also been spotted in Spain, which apparently arrived on boats crossing the Atlantic.

Remember the Tiger mosquito season normally lasts from May until Sept/Oct in Spain but the peak month is July. The tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) which is native to South east Asia can now be found on the Costa Blanca and has spread throughout the Mediterranean gradually and there are now established populations in France, Italy and Greece as well as Spain. The tiger mosquito is considered to be one of the 100 most damaging invading species in the world according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). It can carry more than 20 exotic diseases, but even though the mosquito has the capacity to carry these diseases in order for them to do so, these diseases must be present in a mosquito carrying them in Spain. The tiger mosquito is strikingly different from other mosquitoes due to its very noticeable black and white striped markings, the body of the mosquito is 2 to 10mm long depending on breeding condition and food available. The tiger mosquito season normally lasts from May until Sept/Oct in Spain but the peak month is July. The mosquito feeds during the day (especially between the hours 6am and 10am and 4pm and 10pm) males on nectar and plant juices but the females fed on blood, which they require in order to develop their eggs. Water is an essential element of the larval development process and since they have a short flight range of only 200 meter this means they are normally found near to water. They love stagnant water, old dirty swimming pools which have turned green, discarded water bottles, animal water bowls etc. etc. According to specialists it is “almost impossible” to eradicate the mosquito but the population can be held in check.

My slant on the Armada.

It’s 1588 and history tells us that the Spanish built a fleet of ships known as the Armada Invincible. 130 ships set sail planning to overthrow Elizabeth 1st, which would ultimately stop protestant interference in the Spanish Netherlands. History tells us they chose not to attack the English Fleet at Plymouth, but then failed to establish an anchorage in the Solent after an attack by an English fire ship…. The armada invincible managed to regroup and withdrew to the North with the wind after having their fingers burnt with the English fleet chasing them in the Atlantic Ocean, where once again history would have us believe storms caught the warships, scattering them and wrecking a third of this magnificent fleet, the rest travelled back in a ragged state. BUT… think about it…. After many years of observing and listening to this wonderful race of people, and their mañana approach to life where everything is promised in a rush, but delivered and done mañana, or maybe the mañana after The people do live up to their promises, but oh so slowly. Their privacy is important to them, or so we believed, but not one of them can have a phone call

no matter where or when, they will stand outside with a phone clasped to their ear shouting their messages as if using a bean can and string. Some races have difficulty pronouncing certain words because of the way we all use our tongues, eg: the Spanish roll their r’s, some race’s cannot pronounce the letters ‘th’ as ‘th’ and use ‘f’ instead eg: for ‘three’ they use ‘free’. Our youth do that because they are lazy, but what the Spanish, as a race of people cannot do, (bless their cotton socks) is whisper and this is where I think the history books have lied to us all along. Think about it, everything is done mañana (tomorrow), they could never have had a fleet of ships ready even though Elizabeth reigned for many years, they would have always been ready tomorrow… and then the reality of them not attacking the fleet at Plymouth, well come on, they have a fiesta for everything, fireworks celebrations and vino at the drop of a hat and for a drop of a hat. So I reckon this fleet set sail, and missed out on some festivals while preparing to fight the English. Not willing to let this happen the first thing they do is ensure a huge celebration because they have built some ships, and managed to

insurances Since 1987 For a friendly, reliable service and competitive quotations

set sail celebrating the event with deafening explosions loud enough to be heard across the sea. As if the cannon fire didn’t warn the English fleet of their launch they continued in fiesta like stealth making their way across the channel, alas, the Spanish are a voluble race and I guess their sheer exuberance would have alerted Plymouth before they even passed France because one thing we have learnt over the years about our much loved Spanish cousins is, they never do anything quietly and they never shut up. At Plymouth, I reckon the English heard them first and saw the fireworks later and so pre-warned, they roused the troops. The English plan to send in a fire ship was a stroke of genius, the Spanish love a good fire festival and at home, they celebrate by building huge statues, (ninots) often identifiable with a well known local personality or politician, which on land they parade around the towns and then set them on fire, and the Vino flows like water. At another one, at midnight they walk on the dying embers and wash three times in the sea to bring them luck. On the Armada Invincible, the poor Spanish, possibly hot on Vino and fire watching, obviously forgot they were heading off supposedly to trounce the English and anchored in Calais when they spied the pretty flames from an English fire ship heading towards them, flames rising in a cascade of golden sparks, causing them to open another barrel or two of vino to celebrate. At first they watched enamoured of the flames until their own ships began catching on fire, scoring an own goal, quickly sobering, they had to make sail as best and as fast as they could, mañana would be too late, thus giving the English the chance to trounce them from our shores where they attacked at Gravelines. The unhappy Spanish fled only to be swamped and sunk by storms thus came the end of the Armada invincible.

See your man in a new light! Myth #1: Men Are Not Emotional This may come as a surprise, but men are probably more emotional than women. How is this possible? Unlike femininity, masculinity doesn’t permit emoting on a regular basis, so men are like Victorian novels: placid on the outside, but concealing a deep emotional life within. Myth #2: Sex Is What Matters the Most Yes, sex is important to men. It’s one of the ways we access our imaginations. (At times it might seem like the only way we do.) But one of the big secrets about men is how much they long for real solidarity with their partner. Myth #3: A Man Is His Job For most men, the pressures of work stem from two things: a desire to excel at something (a principle of manhood we were taught as boys) and a need to contribute to the well-being of our families. But duty is not the same as identity, and what one does is not the same as who one is. Myth #4: Males Are Limited Creatures “Men as underdeveloped” is the most effective propaganda the male sex has created. Your belief in our limitations brings certain “rewards” (i.e., expectations are lowered; bad behaviour is tolerated; apathy becomes a non-negotiable). Women, the usual victims of these limitations, most likely buy into the idea because it elevates them. Myth #5: Men Hate to Commit Masculinity is one of the most oppressive forces as far as behaviour goes because it demands that men appear “tough” at all times, thereby avoiding any overt displays of love and affection, which can be detrimental to a relationship.

Dear Richard, I need to password protect my files and folders in Windows 10. Can you explain how to do this and is it simple to do? Regards, Kim. Dear Kim, Probably the simplest way for you to protect your files and folders would be use separate user profiles with passwords for each person using the computer. If you still want to password protect a individual file or folder, right click the item and go to Properties, then click on advanced under Attributes, on this screen you can choose to encrypt the file/folder by checking the box Encrypt contents to secure data.

News Hi GA News, I thought you might want to put an article in your paper about a conman who is operating again in the GA area.

Richard, can you tell me what the F keys along the top of the keyboard are for. I’ve never used them and I don’t want to press one by mistake. Best regards, Michael Dear Michael, These F keys you refer to are known as Function Keys and depending on what you have installed on your computer different applications may make use of them to perform different functions (typically a shortcut for doing a task in that program). Dear sir, can you tell me if it is simple for me to set up protection on my laptop so that children cannot access anything they shouldn’t on the internet? My grandchildren are due over in the summer and will no doubt want to use it. Many thanks, Derek.

This guy has been at it for about 10 years he uses several names including Peter, he says he is Dutch but it’s believed he is in fact German. His MO is to approach people, in their homes and say he is a neighbour in the urbanisation, and that he has either been burgled or he has

Letters Page been locked out of his house, he then asks for money between €40-70 and that he will pay the money back the next day. Guess what he never does. He is slim build 6’2” tall or about 1.88m aged in his 60s he smells of alcohol and smoke and rough living. He conned €70 out of a neighbour of mine last night and she recognised him from my photo that I took two years ago, when he was trying the same con with another neighbour. I sent an article to another publication 2 years ago but they bottled printing it, although the Leader did print a warning about him. I’ve included a photo of him.. It seems council workers decided to create their own road laws last month when they put this traffic sign up next to the roundabout on Avenida del Carabasi. They put the sign upside down (it should be pointing downwards signifying ‘Give Way’ but as you can see it’s180 degrees out! As the sign has no meaning in the Spanish Highway Code we thought we’d ask readers for your suggestions for a new road law that the sign could represent. Below we’ve listed the top comments. God knows my eyesight is going, so he puts on the light when I pee, and turns it off when I’m done!” A little later in the day, Dr. Smith called George’s wife and said: “Your husband’s test results were fine, but he said something strange that has been bugging me. He claims that God turns the light on and off for him when uses the bathroom at night.” Thelma exclaimed: “That old fool! Oh I say...

A kid comes home from school with a writing assignment. He asks his father for help. “Dad, can you tell me the difference between potential and reality?” His father looks up, thoughtfully, and then says, “I’ll demonstrate. Go ask your mother if she would sleep with Robert Redford for a million pounds. Then go ask your sister if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million pounds. Then come back and tell me what you’ve learned.” The kid is puzzled, but decides to ask his mother. “Mum, if someone gave you a million pounds, would you sleep with Robert Redford?” “Don’t tell your father, but yes, I would,” she replies. He then goes to his sister’s room. “Sis, if someone gave you a million pounds, would you sleep with Brad Pitt?” She replies, “Omigod! Definitely!” The kid goes back to his father. “Dad, I think I’ve figured it out. Potentially, we are sitting on two million quid, but in reality, we are living with two sluts.”

Not since Wimbledon 2002 has an Australia male claimed victory at one of Tennis’ four Grand Slams, but hold your horses tennis fans, this year might be the year that all changes. Lleyton Hewitt, the man who loves Tennis so much he has retired and staged a dramatic comeback roughly three times this year already, won the second Grand Slam of his career at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club 16 years ago, following on from his U.S. Open victory in 2001. The Davis Cup captain made it to the final of two other Grand Slam tournaments, the 2004 U.S. Open and the 2005 Australian Open, but our Aussie hero was bested by Roger Federer and Marat Safin respectively. Apart from Hewitt, just three Aussie men have made it to the quarter-final stage of one of tennis’ four most important tournaments since Lleyton’s win in England back in ‘02. Mark Philippoussis, aka Scud, faced the

Bernard Tomic, as an 18-year-old, made the quarter-final of the same tournament in 2011. Remember what high hopes we once had for the current world No. 146? The fourth and final Aussie has made it
