It’s not always easy, or safe, to get around Gran Alacant on foot as we showed in our report in the last issue where we highlighted the often dangerous placement of communal rubbish bins and car parking spaces next to pedestrian crossings. After having spoken to reader and local resident Graham Lowdon, who is disabled and relies on a mobility scooter to get around, we decided to take to the roads once again and see things from his perspective. And what an eye-opener it was.

It didn´t take us long to find the first obstacle to block not only Graham´s view, which was obviously lower than mine and similar to that of a child, but mine too (I´m six feet three inches tall). A bottle bank opposite the Chinese restaurant in Avenida Escandinavia is located right next to the crossing, on the down side of the road, so that cars heading down cannot see even someone as tall as me standing behind it.

A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW heading to and from the car park to the shops and restaurants. Often there is a truck parked next to the crossing delivering goods to the businesses which makes it impossible for anyone to be seen if they are trying to cross the road. The only answer for the pedestrian is to get out into the road and take their chances with the traffic, which, especially in the mornings, heads down the road at pace.

Getting almost halfway across the road was the only solution for Graham further down Avenida Escandinavia when he tried to cross the road to go to the Post Office. Rubbish bins this time obscured his view and I watched from over the road as at least a dozen cars passed Graham, who was waiting to cross, blissfully unaware that he was there, until he had to get onto the crossing and head out into the road, hoping that any vehicles coming would catch a glimpse of him – see the image – before anyone stopped and even then a Mercedes almost skidded to a stop as he started to cross. We have video footage of the incident on our Facebook page if you want to see just how dangerous it is for Graham.

Next we tried heading down the right hand pavement of Avenida Escandinavia towards Calle Canarias (the left hand pavement was blocked by a lorry parked half on the pavement). As you can see from the photo, it is impossible to pass on the pavement due to its incredibly narrow width and the ridiculous placement of a telephone post and lampposts – it’s pretty much impossible walking on that pavement let alone trying to get the scooter or

even a pushchair down that side. So, we headed back and along Avenida Mediterraneo towards the businesses located there. Access for Graham to all of these business is either just not possible or he can get to the first two or three, but only at certain times of the year.

The reason for this is that although at the corner (where the Dream Corner restaurant is) the pavement is dropped down allowing access, when the businesses are open and have their tables and chairs out a mobility scooter cannot get through without causing a lot of hassle for diners.

Further along and there is no way through as the awnings of the business take up the whole of the top pavement leaving space for pedestrians on the lower pavement but with no access up the kerb. I know of one disabled man who had to close his bank account because he couldn’t get even to the bank’s front door!

Driving can be as risky too, just take a look at the junction behind the Carabasi Centre (see photo) where drivers turning on to the road have the view blocked by a row of bins. And it´s the same all over Gran Alacant with very little regard given to the disabled or parents with pushchairs with the placement of the obstacles. The bins and parking spaces need to be removed and allow drivers a clear view of anyone trying to cross the road and the same for pedestrians so that they can actually see what´s coming. All these images and videos will be passed on to the town hall in Santa Pola and we´ll report back with their comments.

neighbours and users, the town hall and the management of the complex, known commercially, for the two years, as Santara Resort.

This decision by the Court of Instruction, was notified to the parties at the end of last November, In this complaint for the possible crime of prevarication, users of the complex understand that “the Town Hall and the people who are in charge of it are incurring in the abandonment of functions”, since in their opinion, their inaction has resulted in “a crime of prevarication in commission by omission, regulated by the Penal Code, according to which the authority or the public official who, knowing of his injustice, dictates an arbitrary resolution in an administrative matter.”

It should be remembered that the

90,000-square-metre municipal plot was sold to be used “solely and exclusively for health care use” according to the General Plan of Urban Planning (PGOU) in Santa Pola. In addition, according to the agreement established with the Topwn Hall, these homes were intended for people over 55 years of age or over, disabled or under 55 years of age who need specific medical and rehabilitation treatments.

For those affected and for the Town Hall itself (recognised in decrees that are part of the file), this “healthcare complex is being used for tertiary/hotel use, incompatible with the current urban planning.”

Although the current management are trying to make the resort work with very little help from the town hall and with their hands effectiveloy tied.

STUPIDITY AND ITS REWARD

In no special hurry, and on a perfectly normal morning, I descended seven of the eight steps outside my apartment door to reach the door of the block. On the eighth and final step, my foot decided upon an alternative strategy, and this resulted in a graceful pirouette, depositing me upon my posterior, my left foot at a strange angle. I called for assistance – which came from four different apartments in seconds – and an ambulance was summoned. Five minutes later I was off to Alicante General, where, the following day, I was operated on for a fractured ankle. A day later and I’m home again, but shall not be trotting around for a while! All I have to tell readers is that if you are as daft as me at some point, and fall down and bust something, the Seguridad Social medical services are there to sort you out – and make no mistake – they will do so not only efficiently, but with a great deal of care and expert knowledge. I should know, I’ve now had four operations in Alicante General, and you couldn’t wish for better treatment.

Gran Alacant Resident with Tumour frustrated at Operation Delays A Gran Alacant resident has denounced Elche Hospital after she was repeatedly put off from a much-needed operation for a bladder tumour. The lady is being treated by the Urology Department at the General Hospital in Elche, where a tumour was detected by chance, in a review of the digestive system.

According to the woman, “the Radiology, Digestive, Urology specialists and my family doctor were ready so that I would be given the necessary tests for an urgent intervention”. However, first came on December 7, “dreadful day because half of the already deficient staff of hospital health personnel, was on a a break because of the fiestas, after that came the Christmas holidays and after those holidays were over I got in touch with Urology to ask when the intervention would be.”

The lady says that the Urology administration secretary “recommended that I call the SIP, I did and I was told, I would have to go on a waiting list without having the right to know when I can touch it and stop calling because they will not tell me anything else. I am still worried I will have a haemorrhage, in which case they told me to go to the emergency room.”

the Popular Party condemned the “false promises made during this time, which are beginning to cause upset and frustration among the parents and the educational community of Gran Alacant. At present we are again in the same place as in June 2015, when these seasoned managers arrived in the municipal government “.

He went on to add that, “after 30 months of misrule by the coalition in the town hall, the second school for Gran Alacant is still in limbo. In 2015 they said that it would be built in 2016, in 2016 they said it would be built in the first semester of 2017. It amazes and saddens us that in 2018 they have not yet been able to provide the documentation that they are repeatedly asked for by the Ministry of Education.” According to the PP, “the only thing they have done to date has been to return to the Conselleria the plot that the Popular Party government gave to Education in the meeting on January 31st, 2014 for the construction of the school, and now they give the same plot back again to the same Counsellor of Education.”

The Ministry published a decree on October 20th, called ‘Plan Edificant’, with the aim of building schools. According to the PP, the mayor, Yolanda Seva, and the councillor for Education, Loli Tomás, “realise a dossier of needs but they do not include the second school for Gran Alacant.”

They argue that the construction project for the second school in Gran Alacant is already underway and that they do not want it to be included in the Edificant Plan because it is already undergoing immediate and urgent processing.”

The Popular Party replied saying, “this would be very good if this statement were true, but the reality is that they have not even been able to send the documentation requested by the Ministry of Education and without it they cannot be found responsible for writing the basic project for the school.”

GA local comes under fire on forum

A storm was brewing on the Gasbags forum last month with long time Gran Alacant man John Hannon coming under fire from a contributor and which ended in him deciding to no longer take part in the conversations and banter that have become popular on there.

However, normal service was resumed when a good few members got in touch with John to offer their support and ask him not to dissappear from the forum. He eventually was persuaded back and is back creating interesting debates, and sharing useful information.

I have also done my best to moderate the forum to keep in lines with the rules we set. Last night I received a message from a member, who quoted other members names, saying that I “looked with distaste” at other members who did not post regularly and that I was part of the “old boys/girls” who seemed to rule the forum, I could go on, but apparently this behaviour is the reason why people don’t want to post on this forum for fear of being “ridiculed”.

My initial reaction was to say “grow a pair”, because in all honesty this reaction is one that has taken me completely by surprise and I will add if members conduct on this forum does dictate if you contribute or not you do indeed need to grow a pair, in my opinion it is a well mannered well run forum, although I would say that wouldn’t I!!

RISING SEA LEVELS DANGER TO COAST

The Government takes measures to protect the coast of the province of Alicante before the rise of the sea due to climate change The last and definitive modification made by the Regional Ministry of Vertebration for the plan to protect the coast of the Valencian Community, has seen a significant change to the document according to geographers Fernando Vera and Jorge Olcina, professors at the University of Alicante. They lay the foundations to fight against climate change by taking measures to combat the expected increase in sea level and flood problems arising from the intensity of storms on the coastal strip.

According to the professors, the plan foresees the adaptation to climate change on the coast with a twin aspect: liberating the spaces that will suffer first that have been selected in the document and that are the areas of floor, basically, not developable, that are left on the coast. In this way, the effects of the rise in sea level and the increase in the frequency of rising storms are stopped. Acts in a preventive manner It avoids the occupation of flood areas on the coast. That is, the river mouths and ravines that have been selected in the report. “This way, the effects of the increase in the frequency of torrential rain that is predicted by models of climate change for

the Mediterranean are softened. It is also a way of preventive adaptation to climate change, it is the first plan in Spain that has adopted a criterion of prevention in the face of climate change in a sector of the territory (coastal) that it is extremely delicate and an obvious danger from the possible effects of this environmental problem.

DIRTY MED IS FULL OF RUBBISH Greenpeace: 96% of litter found in Mediterranean Sea is plastic

A Greenpeace Spain report launched on World Oceans Day which puts numbers to the enormous problem of plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea coincides with the Greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior, setting sail in the region to examine solutions to the problem. [1] The tour, starting along the Spanish coast, will continue into Italy, Croatia and Greece.

A final leg will take the ship into the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea, a basin also impacted by plastic pollution.

The report “A Mediterranean full of plastic. Research on plastic pollution, impacts and solutions” highlights key facts and figures on plastic pollution in this sea, including that 96% of floating litter sampled in the Mediterranean is plastic, or that plastic has been found in depths up to 3000m in the Mediterranean and been identified in more than 90% of samples collected in the deep sea floor. The report also highlights the impacts plastic pollution has on marine flora and fauna, including the fact that plastic accounts for 97.3% of the debris ingested by loggerhead turtles in the Mediterranean.

During the “Less Plastic, More Mediterranean” ship tour, the Rainbow Warrior will stop in several ports in each country, and the team onboard will be meeting with politicians, holding open-door events for the public and conducting scientific research in collaboration with scientific institutions in each country.

The aim of the tour is to raise awareness of the level of plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea, with an average accumulation of plastics comparable to that

found in the tropical accumulation areas known as “plastic soups”. That is why the campaign has launched a petition to ask EU governments to phase out single-use plastic items, like plastic cups, cutlery and bags.

The global production of plastic waste has increased dramatically over recent years.

It is estimated that plastic constitutes 6080% of all marine litter and is increasing at an alarming rate. The highest proportion of plastic demand is used for packaging (eg 39.9% in Europe) much of it for single-use products. “An estimated 4.8 to 12.7 million metric tonnes of plastic enter the ocean globally each year from 192 coastal countries across the world.

DOCUMENTS NEEDED WHEN DRIVING IN SPAIN

Avoid a fine and possible problems when driving in Spain by making sure you have the correct paperwork with you in your car Spain is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and many of its visitors will hire a car while in the country, it´s a great way to see the country. Spain welcomes foreign drivers and has some of the best roads in Europe for drivers to enjoy and it’s important for drivers to make sure they have the correct documentation with the to avoid any unnecessary problems (including fines for not having the right documents in the vehicle) should the authorities wish to see them at a roadside check.

Firstly drivers must carry a valid drivers licence and they must be over 21 years old and held the licence for at least a year. International Driving Permits are recognised but not compulsory for drivers coming to Spain from other EU or EEA countries. For drivers from the UK there is no longer the need for the paper counterpart which was abolished in 2015.

Drivers must also carry a valid form of ID, whether that is an ID card or a passport. We’d always recommend drivers to keep their passport with them at all times as it is often asked for as a means of identification by the police at the checks.

Proof of insurance is also obligatory to carry in the car and must be cover at least third party, fire and theft.

You should always make sure that the insurance documents are in the glove box along with the registration documents. The vehicle must have the registration documents in it at all times as they carry all the necessary information about the vehicle, including if it has a passed a Spanish vehicle inspection (MOT) and is therefore roadworthy.

Last month, the British Pound hit a three month high against a basket of its major currency rivals, following a poll that showed the ‘Bremain In’ camp was consolidating an 18 point lead in the upcoming referendum on Britain’s status in the European Union. In an IPSOS-MORI poll by the British Evening Standard newspaper, 55% supported staying in the European Union, whilst only 37% wanted Brexit.

The online betting firm, Betfair, goes further by implying the probability of Britain staying inside the EU on June 23 to be at 76%, up from an initial verdict of 73%. It’s not looking good for ex-London Mayor Boris Johnson, or UKIP leader and lifelong flagbearer for Brexit, Nigel Farage.

So we’re heading into the mountains to bring you five inland villages within easy driving of Gran Alacant. Each has its own unique story to tell.

SAY HI TO JIJONA Jijona, also known as Xixona, is where all the lovely Christmas turron is made. Heading through the countryside, you’ll see an abundance of wild flowers and blossom providing pollen for the honey plus many almond orchards. These natural ingredients have provided the small inland town with its most important economic activity – making turron. You can see how this delicious sweet is made at the Museo del Turron museum and factory, set up by the Sirvent Selfa family in 1725, before

ALICANTE TOY TOWN After such a sweet start to the day, why not head 20kms further inland to Ibi? About 40% of all toys made in Spain come from little Ibi. You can see the type of toys your parents or grandparents would have played with at the Valencia Toy Museum, home to more than 4,000 exhibits made of tin, plastic or wood, such as boats, trains, cars, rocking chairs, and dolls. February is a great time to visit as the town hosts the traditional Festa dels Geladors, organised by the ice-cream makers to celebrate the imminent start of the ice-cream season. This year it’ll be held on February 21 and 22.

Every village has it’s own charm but Guadalest and its iconic bell tower perched on top of a rocky peak, is rated as one of the top attractions in Spain, so it’s definitely not to be missed. It’s a bit of a ride up the winding, mountain road to Guadalest but the views are spectacular.

Obviously the castle is the main attraction once you get there as well as the views down to the turquoise Guadalest reservoir and over to the Mediterranean. Curiously, for such a small remote place, Guadalest has a fine range of strange museums such as the Micro-Gigantic Museum housing some of the smallest exhibits in the world such as a bullring built on a pinhead, a museum full of salt and pepper pots, and a museum with medieval instruments of torture.

OH VILLENA Now you can head around to the other side of the Sierra del Maigmo to venture into Villena, 29kms from Ibi, for one of the best-preserved castles in the Alicante province, the Castillo de la Atalaya. This magnificent fortress is certainly worth the steep climb for the reward of those far-reaching views. Beside the castle, you’ll find several ancient cave-houses, restored by the Tuareg Association, with decorated rooms full of historic artefacts such as an old loom, tools and pottery.

AGAZE AT AGOST Spain is famous for its brightly-coloured pottery and there’s no better place to find out how it’s made than in Agost. Some of their craftspeople still make their own clay in the traditional Agost

Things to do with the MAKING CANDLES

Use up some leftover candles to make some funky new ones with the kids - as a present or for yourselves.

5. Prepare the container for the wax while you are waiting for the candles to melt.

Attach the end of the wick to the bottom with a drop of paraffin.

Take an old pencil or something similar that is round and long, even a straw and place it over the top of your container.

6. Place your wick in the middle of the container so that it drapes over the pencil.

Optionally use a piece of tape to hold the wick to the pencil.

1. Get some old candles. If you have a bunch of old candles lying around the house, then it’ll be easier for you do to this project. But don’t worry if you don’t. You can go to a thrift store and buy bags of candles that are very cheap. You could also talk to friends that you have and see about getting their old candles. Some churches give away old candles.

7. Pour. After the wax is completely melted, pour the melted wax into your container. Keep a little bit of the wax in the saucepan to use later. It could take from a few minutes up to a few hours for the candle wax to completely harden.

Once the wax is almost completely hard, you will notice that the wax is dipped in right around the wick.

8. Take the little bit of wax that you left in the saucepan and make sure that it is completely melted.

2. Find an old saucepan or something similar that can get wax on it. It is easier if the saucepan has a pouring spout to it. You can also try to fill a pot with water and then put an old can which you will later fill with wax into it. This method will most likely not get the pot as full of wax.

9. Pour the extra wax into the dip to make the dip fill in. Let this little bit of wax completely harden.

Remember depending on what type of container you used, either light the candle directly in the container or you can slip it right out of the container.

10. Keep in mind that if you are having a hard time getting the candle out of the container.

11. Decorate your new candle with glitter, sand, flowers or any other idea you might have to make your candle pretty.

12. Finished.

3. Break up the old wax and stick a few pieces in the saucepan over low heat.

4. Stir the candles until they have melted.

BREXIT AND FOOTBALL – AN ANALOGY

From previous scribbling, you may well be excused for thinking that I am inclined to rubbish all things British. That is far from the case, and I have many happy memories of my time and friendships on those islands, and an abiding love of cricket that can scarcely be found here in Spain. But let me try to draw an analogy between the current anti-European stance which has led half the population to vote – in my belief misguidedly – for Brexit, and the attitude prevalent in English football in the post-war years. Then football’s controlling bodies made vast sums of money from

vastly overcrowded, practically Victorian stadia, whilst paying players the ‘maximum wage’ of a fiver a week. They had already refused to take part in two World Cups (a gimmick, they said), and when England were eliminated from the Brazil version, they refused to allow Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney the watch, and learn from the finals. They wouldn’t sanction clubs’ requests to play in the European Cup for several years. (won’t last, they said, adding that what really mattered was the domestic league) It took a sound thrashing from Puskas and Hidegkuti’s ‘Magic Magyars’ (3-6 at home, then 7-1 in Budapest to wake up the FA – when somebody pointed out that they didn’t just play a different way, they wore better gear. Gradually, very gradually, things started to change, until now English clubs are competing with the best – sometimes. Other things have changed for the good – metric measurements (partly) and decimal money. (though nobody could convince me that Britain is better off with the pound sterling when the rest of the continent uses the Euro) Britain still has much to offer, but surely you can see parallels in the hidebound attitudes of the Football Association pre-1952, and the ‘Keep Britain Great’ jingoism of some politicians today?

LOCAL SIDES WILL BE GLAD TO SEE THE BACK OF JANUARY HERCULES C.F. Claudio Barragan must be watching his back after Hercules only managed three draws in the first four games of 2018. The poor start to the New Year is just one point more than Pacheta’s Hercules managed in the 2014/15 season in their first year in Segunda B. The former midfielder was sacked in January 2015 for his abysmal record of three wins out of 12 home games.

Barragan has fared a little better with five home wins in 12 but last weekend the blue and white’s let three points slip away in the dying minutes against their promotion rivals Cornellà.
