acoustics play a large role in this open architectural office, creating clusters of acoustical ceilings to absorb sound in collaborative spaces an organic path of travel originated from doing circulation studies showing the common walk-through spaces for clients and employees
entering the office, a wood slat ceiling is used to create a welcoming environment for clients. a large, organic-shaped gypsum board ceiling is installed that creates a strong sense of wayfinding with the flooring below it wrapping its way through the office acoustical clouds are used to enhance the atmosphere in the more collaborative areas and are placed at different heights to enhance acoustics in some areas more than others

custom casework was designed throughout this project for the reception, ideation zone, and work cafe. the reception desk was the main focus for custom casework design as it is part of the first impression for the office, it sets the tone. the reception has three different height transaction tops, 30” for ada compliant height, 36”, and 44”. not only are these various transaction heights designed for inclusive design, but it also mimics the organic shape happening in the ceiling above

eastland mall is located in bloomington-normal, il and is currently sitting at about a 50% vacancy. many malls across the nation are experiencing this same issue, so what do we do with these large spaces that aren’t being fully occupied anymore? our proposal is to transform the existing space into a dementia friendly care facility. for this project we wanted to focus on just one space that residents would be able to enjoy anonymous kiwi is a modern restaurant that occupies 9,000 sq. ft. and uses fresh produce from local farms that are also available in the market located within the dementia friendly care facility
while space planning, we took into consideration different dining spaces in the restaurant, spaces for private dinners and also more interactive spaces that could include live music, or other community events we wanted to accommodate as many patrons as possible since this facility would house many residents, however we still wanted to allow ample space for circulation and provide an outdoor seating area that could be used seasonally
19
circulation, visual contrast, and materialization became important to consider when designing the space. circulation was at the forefront of the design to make sure there is more than enough space for wheelchair accessibility low contrast flooring was taken into consideration because as we age, our vision deters for instance, contrast on flooring can sometimes look like a step up or step down which could become a potential tripping hazard, so low contrast flooring was utilized in this design. higher contrast was used on furniture and architectural objects to reduce the risk of running into objects or missing the seat when trying to sit at a table for materials, we decided to use a cork flooring, with sens flooring technology under it, this way, if there are falls, a softer floor is used, and the sens floor technology will automatically call for help. for seating, a stain repellent fabric is applied in case of any spills or accidents
coffered ceilings wrapped in buzzispace felt gives the illusion of a wooden ceiling to add warmth while providing acoustic considerations into the space.

an outdoor space was added on to the restaurant to provide outdoor dining for residents. pergolas are added over the patio space to provide a cooler, shaded environment outdoor fireplaces are also available for chilly summer nights so outdoor dining is still an option
for some of our renderings, we decided to put ourselves in the shoes of some of the potential residents occupying the space, so we lowered the contrast which is a common visual problem with the aging population
outdoor dining
terrarium spaces add a sense of biophilia into the space and act as dividers between spaces while still providing privacy between booths options for various types of seating are available so there is a spot for everyone at the table
