SuDS Compliance

What is SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems)?

Origins:

The floods of 2007 led to the Pitt Review (Michael Pitt, civil servant) which highlighted that two thirds of the 57,000 homes affected were flooded not by swollen rivers but by surface water runoff or surcharge from overloaded sewers.

The Pitt Review led to the 2010 Flood and Water Management Act with provisions set to make SuDS mandatory for any construction work that affects the ability of land to absorb rainwater, enforced by new, local authority ‘SuDS Approved Bodies’ (SAB’s).

Since 6th April 2015 the implementation of legislation through local authority SuDS Approved Bodies is no longer. SuDS is now dealt with as part of the overall planning process, with each individual council planning team consulting with the local flood authority on the management of surface water. This consultation will determine whether or not the proposed SuDS meets planning criteria for the prevention of flooding.

SuDS applies to new housing developments of 10 or more dwellings, as well as commercial and mixed-use developments. With regard to existing domestic properties, Permitted Development rights have been removed from new or replacement driveways or other hard surfaces (patios etc), unless permeable paving is used or water drains onto a permeable area within the property. Otherwise planning permission will be required.

How can SuDS compliance be achieved?

Provide an alternative to the conventional means of piping surface water directly into the public sewer. The aim is to drain surface water into the ground or provide temporary storage so water can be released slowly. This can be achieved by surface water runoff to soft landscaped areas, soakaways, attenuation tanks, retention ponds and permeable paving.

Without adequate surface water control downstream flooding can occur and overwhelmed drainage systems, when released to watercourses, can cause deterioration in river quality.

LimeBound UV Resin Bound Surfacing

LimeBound UV Stable Resin Bound System is a resin bound aggregate surface for pedestrian and vehicular traffic which is permeable (SuDS compliant), decorative and functional, seamless and slightly flexible. The open matrix allows water to drain through to the base, eliminating water ponding and allowing water to drain to planted areas or land drains. The surfacing may be applied to SuDS compliant bases and sub-bases, reducing the impact of urban development on flood risk and allowing water to flow into water courses. Edgings created from brick, stone, timber or steel should be installed to retain and protect the resin bound surfacing. LimeBound UV Stable Resin Bound System is a two component mixture of the highest grade aliphatic and latest technology ingredients which binds a range of selected decorative kiln-dried aggregates.

LimeBound UV Stable Resin Bound System provides an attractive porous surface which is strong enough for foot and light vehicle traffic up to 7.5 tonne.

Working Times & Temperatures

Working time is affected by temperature; at temperatures above the maximum recommended 25°c the pot life and working time may be insufficient to allow a wet edge to be maintained.

Do not therefore proceed when product and/or air temperature exceeds recommendations.

The air temperature must be monitored during application and work should stop when the temperature exceeds recommendations. Care must be taken to keep materials as cool as possible in warm weather.

At low temperatures 5°C and below the resin will not flow sufficiently to achieve a smooth finish and work should not proceed.

Substrate Requirements

LimeBound UV Stable Resin

Bound System is designed for foot traffic and occasional vehicle traffic such as on domestic driveways, residential developments with light domestic traffic or car parking bays. It is however, not a road surface for heavy volumes of domestic or commercial traffic. Heavier vehicle traffic, including heavy impact and high point loading will damage the surface and may result in failure. Due to the destructive scuffing forces created by power steering (e.g. three point turns) in car parks or on driveways where cars will repeatedly turn within a confined area, localised wear is more likely.

Base Build-up

Resin & Aggregate

LimeBound UV Resin Bound Surfacing is UV resistant resin and will not yellow on exposure to UV light. This is a more attractive option than some other types of resin which can yellow and dramatically alter the appearance of the finished surface. The resin is formulated using aliphatic HDI which will not deteriorate or become brittle when exposed to UV light when tested to BS EN ISO 16474-3 method A. The performance and appearance of the finished surface is dependent on the aggregate used (see Limegate Solutions LimeBound mix blend swatch sheet for colour options). The LimeBound UV Resin Bound surfacing aggregate blends have been designed to achieve strength, resilience, porosity and decoration.

LimePath EasiWalk UV

LimePath EasiWalk UV is ‘no dig’ system that provides a UV stable permeable system ideal for footpaths where there are access limitations for alternative sub bases. Installed at 40mm onto a well compacted and edged MOT type 1 or MOT type 3 base, LimePath EasiWalk UV creates a natural appearance whilst meeting SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) requirements by allowing through its matrix rain water to be returned to the ground helping to prevent the risk of flooding. Using UV stable polyurethane technology, the strength and resistance to UVA and UVB prolongs the performance both durability wise and visually. Available in a variety of colours (see LimePath EasiWalk swatch sheet) due to the use of high performance UV stable resin protecting the stability of the natural colour from obvious change, the aggregate surface is widely specified across the UK in many forms.

Working time is affected by temperature; at temperatures above the maximum recommended 25ºC the pot life and working time may be insufficient to allow a wet edge to be maintained.

Do not therefore proceed when product and/or air temperature exceeds recommendations.

The air temperature must be monitored during application and work should stop when the temperature exceeds recommendations. Care must be taken to keep materials as cool as possible in warm weather.

At low temperatures 5ºC and below the resin will not flow sufficiently to achieve a smooth finish and work should not proceed.

Substrate Requirements

Base Build-up

Resin & Aggregate

LimePath GeoSuDS UV resin is a UV resistant resin and will not yellow on exposure to UV light. This is a more attractive option than some other types of resin which can yellow and dramatically alter the appearance of the finished surface. The resin is formulated using aliphatic HDI which will not deteriorate or become brittle when exposed to UV light when tested to BS EN ISO 16474-3 method A. The performance and appearance of the finished surface is dependent on the aggregate used. The LimePath GeoSuDS UV Aggregate blends have been designed to achieve strength, resilience, porosity and decoration.

GeoSuDs Mix Blends

Slip Resistance

All LimePath GeoSuDS UV aggregate blends have been tested for slip resistance in wet and dry conditions. Anti-Slip aggregate broadcast onto the surfacing during installation will significantly increase the slip resistance of the surface in the wet and on steep gradients without substantial change to appearance.

Base Build-up

Resin & Rubber Granules

LimeRubber polyurethane binder is designed specifically for bonding rubber granules and other rubber products. The binder is available as an aromatic isocyanate (standard) or an aliphatic prepolymer (UV resistant) on request. Both products are single component, moisture curing, medium viscosity polyurethane binders. The rubber EPDM and/or Mulch/bark layer as a topping/wearing course is installed at 15mm onto a suitable SBR shockpad or from 20mm when directly onto a solid base. Coloured EPDM granules are made from a compound of EPDM rubber, specialist pigment and UV stabilisers. The rubber compound is produced under carefully controlled factory conditions which are then granulated at high speed where dust is removed at every stage to ensure granules are as clean as possible. Thorough testing ensures that the physical and chemical properties are of high quality. The LimeRubber SBR shockpad/base is a recycled tyre granulate suitable for base layer applications. This is installed before a wearing layer at depths from 15mm to 130mm subject to CFH requirements. SBR tyre granules are produced from waste truck tyres, recycled by means of ambient grinding. The rubber mulch/bark is processed to remove steel, fibre and dust to produce a clean high quality rubber granulate.

Base Build-up

Resin & Aggregate

LimeBonded systems use an aromatic formulation that provides a strong bonded finish. The performance and appearance of the finished surface is dependent on the aggregates used. The LimeBonded aggregates recommended have been selected for their strength and decorative appearance. LimeBonded Decorative Surfacing aggregates are high performing and available in a variety of colours. When selecting for roads and high traffic areas where high friction surfacing is required it is always advised to use bauxite aggregates. Appearance can be affected by the size of selected aggregates for example when using a larger aggregate such as a 2-5mm the open appearance will show the base resin bleeding through.

LimeBonded UV Mix Blends

Slip Resistance

All LimeBonded Decorative Surfacing aggregate blends provide excellent traction and ‘low potential for slip’ in both wet and dry conditions. The LimeBonded Decorative Surfacing system for driveways, pathways and similar applications gives a hard wearing antislip surface and as a LimeBonded High Friction Surfacing system using bauxite aggregates gives a hard wearing anti-skid surface.
