Welcome to the Ties & Tiaras Charity Ball. We are delighted to welcome everyone together at this lovely venue to raise much needed funds for our two fabulous charities.

We hope you have a great evening and can’t thank you enough for coming along to support Teens Unite Fighting Cancer and The Stroke Association.

Teens Unite have had a long standing vision to open the first retreat in England to provide short, residential breaks for teenagers and young adults who have experienced cancer. The retreat will comprise of activity space, communal areas and landscaped gardens. We will be able to offer short term accommodation making our support more accessible. The premises requires essential renovation and adaptation before we can open the doors. At a time when we’re experiencing a 21% increase in registrations. Money raised tonight will go towards refurbishing the retreat to allow us to open as soon as possible.

Stroke is one of the UK’s biggest health problems. Stroke strikes every five minutes in the UK, and 1.3 million survivors are struggling to cope with the effects of stroke today. When someone close to you leaves hospital after a stroke, you suddenly find yourself needing to give them help and support. The Stroke Association are there for both the individual who has had the stroke and the person caring for them. They have support helplines there to help you navigate this new way of life. Money raised tonight will be used for research and supporting stroke survivors in the community.

Please know that your attendance this evening and continued support is especially welcome, and your donations will change lives for the better when it’s needed the most.

Teens Unite was founded by Karen Millen OBE and Debbie Pezzani, 17 years ago. They had reached a time in their lives where they wanted to help others, and as parents of teenagers themselves at the time, volunteering on teenage hospital wards felt like the right place for them to be.

Debbie and Karen spent endless hours with teenager cancer patients, holding their hands, being a much-needed distraction, someone to talk to, and a shoulder to cry on when they felt like they couldn’t cry to anyone else. However, despite their good intentions, after meeting a young man named Chris; they realised it wasn’t them these young people needed in their lives, what they needed was to be with others their age who really understood what they were going through.

Chris was 19 at the time. He had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and given a very slim chance of survival. He was incredibly unwell having just had a stem cell transplant, and as Debbie and Karen got to know him, they found out he was the sole carer for his two younger brothers.

A difficult home life led to Chris already having more responsibility than most at his age, but cancer doesn’t discriminate, and with the weight of the world already on his shoulders, he was now also fighting for survival.

Debbie, living locally to him, took Chris under her wing; getting him to treatment and hospital appointments and helping him to run the household. Chris went through it all; two stem cell transplants, five rounds of chemotherapy, a month of radiotherapy, and finally a drug trial, which ultimately saved his life.

Understandably, at times, life became too much for Chris, and his way of coping was through an alter ego known as ‘Christof’. He would say cancer was happening to Christof, not Chris. Christof was like a superhero who could take on the world and handle everything life thew at him. Christof could muster the strength to deal with the treatment pumping through his body, cope with the bad news he was given time and time again, and step into survival mode when the odds were against him.

But nothing could prepare either Chris or Christof for what came next. His younger brother, Carl was diagnosed with the same cancer Chris was fighting to survive. He had entered this terrifying, draining and tiresome life too; but they found comfort and strength in facing it together. They knew how each other felt, without even having to say it.

Sadly, Carl didn’t survive his cancer, and he died in Debbie’s arms on 19th July 2005, at the age of 20.

When Carl passed away, Chris turned to Debbie and said “not only have I lost my brother, but I’ve also lost the one person in the world who really understood what I was going through. The one person who knows what living this life feels like.” Chris felt more alone than ever.

With those words came a realisation that if Chris was feeling this way, then other young people facing cancer must be too. It dawned on Debbie and Karen that although these young people were receiving the medical care they needed, there was no support available to help them deal with the effect on their emotional, social, and mental health –not just during treatment, but years down the line.

Teens Unite was founded to bring young people living with, and beyond cancer – together, and provide them with opportunities to be able to live life to the full.

Over 40,000 teenagers and young adults are currently living with cancer and the longterm effects in the UK. A further 2,500 new cases will be diagnosed this year alone.

Cancer has a lasting impact on the lives of teenagers and young adults, even years after treatment comes to an end. Cancer affects their mental and physical health, education and employment, friendships and relationships, and aspirations for the future. When it feels like there’s so much they can’t do, Teens Unite enables them to thrive in life, not just survive.

Young people aged 13-24, with a shared experience of cancer, are united through tailored activities, workshops, residential stays, and skills-based programmes. Together, they find friendship, physically challenge themselves, rebuild their confidence, and learn new skills to improve their lives now, and for the future.

What is a stroke?

A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, killing brain cells. Damage to the brain can affect how the body works. It can also change how you think and feel. The effects of a stroke depend on where it takes place in the brain, and how big the damaged area is.

Stroke can be life-changing. It can happen to anyone of any age and affects everyone in different ways.

Types of stroke

There are three different types of stroke:

Ischaemic stroke

This is caused by a blockage cutting off the blood supply to the brain.

Haemorrhagic stroke

This is caused by bleeding in or around the brain.

Transient ischaemic attack

TIA is also known as a mini-stroke.
