For further advice and information, approval of designs, supply of master artworks, or more current design examples, contact the Marketing Department. at Barrow Hills school.
the logo configurations
The logo comprises two elements: the ‘shield’ and the ‘logotype’.
These can be represented in two configurations: centred or ‘banner’ format as shown. The centred logo is preferred, but the banner format may be necessary when space is constrained.
Please ALWAYS use master artworks as supplied and do not distort, redraw or reproportion any of the elements.
The shield should be represented in full colour whenever possible.
All designs should be approved in their final form by the Marketing Department prior to production.
Master artworks are available as EPS files, and for screen use (RGB) files as jpeg and png.

exclusion zone
The exclusion zone represents the area around the logo which must be kept clear of other elements such as type, images or page edges. It exists to prevent the logo being crowded, which has a detrimental effect on both its recognition, and its sense of quality.
The value ‘X’ represents the width of the shield as a consistent proportion on both cases.
logo
black line only
When the logo is required to be used in one colour only and without tints or gradations, for example in simple press advertising, etching on glass, or for a rubber stamp or franking machine, please use the line version shown here.
Do not use other colours to render the line version of the logo without approval from the Marketing Department.
the shield
for embroidery purposes only
When the shield is used as a school badge, it should appear as shown here.
The thread colours required are shown below.
The scroll at the foot of the shield is normally burgundy, but when used on a burgundy background it may be gold.
These are the nine colours required to render the shield in its flat colour form please match threads to the pms colours below. They are not intended for rendition in print.

colour palette principal colours
The principal colours of the BHS identity are burgundy and a warm neutral colour which derives from the plaster work of the Great Roke building. A 20% tint of the plaster colour can also be used as a background colour to create a sense of space by overlapping. The burgundy should be used sparingly.

colour palette supplementary colours
The supplementary colours derive from the Great Roke site. The Bargate stone walls, the two greens from the famously landscaped gardens, and the pale blue to add freshness and reflect the space and skies around Great Roke. Dark blue should be used minimally to avoid an oppressive feel.
typography
The fonts to be used are Bembo and Verdana. Bembo regular should be predominantly used for headlines and titles, and Verdana for text.
In instances where prestigious material is required, Frutiger light should replace Verdana as it has a fresher and better quality cut, whilst still retaining a similarity to Verdana.
Type should be normally ranged left, and be clean and spacious, punctuation should be minimal, as should the use of initial caps.
Bold versions of fonts should be avoided, using instead, size, spacing and/or italics to create emphasis. Empty space is important to convey control, so avoid overfilling pages.
In instances where Bembo is unavailable, such as in some digital uses, Garamond may be used.

When Bembo is not available, Garamond can be used, such as internal digital use.
Verdana can be used as the main text font on internal and digital use.
Frutiger should be used on outward facing marketing material whenever possible.
craft illustrations
These illustrations are drawn from features in the plasterwork of the Great Roke building.
They should be used discretely, and not be the centre of focus. They are secondary decorative elements only (not labels) to add richness to the identity. They should be represented in the colour of the plasterwork, as shown here.
They are available in a vector .eps file from the Marketing Department.
use of images
Images are key in conveying the spirit of the school.
Children should be happy, engaged, and busy whenever possible. The building and grounds should be well represented as an asset, looking well-cared for, clean and spacious.
Clutter and marks should be retouched out, unless authenticity is required.
Pupils should be well-presented in good uniform (e.g. no scruffy ties, shirts hanging out, biro on hands).
Images should be light/bright, optimistic and uncluttered.
The colours in the colour palette should be included whenever possible to reinforce the identity.
Photographs should appear candid; staged-looking images are to be avoided.
