Nuove storie di memoria M eno male che le vacanze estive anche quest’anno sono alle nostre spalle.

Finalmente abbiamo un anno intero per tornare a sognare… immaginando come sarebbe giusto vivere.

Pensandoci bene, viene da chiedersi cosa esattamente ricordiamo di quanto vissuto nei giorni da poco trascorsi, per non dire di ciò che ci è accaduto addietro nel tempo.

Quasi che, di nuovo bambini, tornassimo a interrogarci su “come andò che Maestro Ciliegia, falegname, trovò un pezzo di legno, che piangeva e rideva come un bambino”.

Nel libro di Collodi, tutto appare chiaro e troviamo risposta alle nostre curiosità, ma non se mettiamo alla prova la nostra memoria che si rivela, più o meno, drammaticamente limitata.

A complicare la situazione non abbiamo cognizione alcuna del perché ricordiamo spesso fatti insignificanti, perdendo traccia di contro di avvenimenti (forse) ben più rilevanti.

Potrebbe essere - come scrive Milan Kundera in “L’ignoranza” - che non siamo capaci di accettare che “una realtà così com’era non esiste più; restituirla è impossibile”.

Belle le riflessioni dell’autore sul diario del protagonista, che mi sembra possano valere per qualsiasi genere di archivio digitale: “Le annotazioni parlano di avvenimenti che il loro autore non ha motivo di negare e che tuttavia la sua memoria non può confermare”.

Tutt’al più, infatti, siamo in grado di avere ricordo di singoli frammenti, episodi che, nel tentativo di assegnar loro un significato, siamo portati a inserire in una “sequenza causale di altri avveni-

menti, di altri gesti, di altre parole”.

E poiché li abbiamo dimenticati non ci resta che inventarli.

Grande è poi l’equivoco che nasce pensando di condividere con un’altra persona i medesimi ricordi. Può essere solo in parte vero perché, del passato, a entrambi, sono rimaste impresse solo alcune situazioni particolari, ma non necessariamente le stesse. I ricordi a volte si somigliano, ma di rado collimano.

Un ulteriore enigma della memoria è legato al fatto che il passato che ricordiamo sembra essere senza tempo. Abbiamo spesso nella mente solo un fermo-immagine, che rende “Impossibile rivivere un amore come rileggiamo un libro o rivediamo un film”.

Che dire, allora, della tecnologia che sta sostituendo la nostra memoria? Ci viene in aiuto Umberto Eco, spiegandoci che, in passato, i vecchi sono stati la memoria della specie, quando raccontavano quello che era accaduto o, si diceva, fosse accaduto: “Prima che si iniziasse a coltivare questa memoria sociale, l’uomo nasceva senza esperienza, non faceva in tempo a farsela, e moriva. Dopo, un giovane di vent’anni era come ne avesse vissuti cinquemila. […] Oggi i libri sono i nostri vecchi. Non ce ne rendiamo conto, ma la nostra ricchezza rispetto all’analfabeta (o di chi, alfabeta, non legge) è che lui sta vivendo e vivrà solo la sua vita e noi ne abbiamo vissute moltissime. […] Naturalmente potremmo ricordare anche menzogne, ma leggere aiuta anche a discriminare. Non conoscendo i torti degli altri, l’analfabeta non conosce neppure i propri diritti”.

Ruggero Maggi è un artista multimediale e curatore dai molteplici interessi: dal 1973 si occupa di poesia visiva e libri d’artista (Archivio Non Solo Libri); dal 1975 di copy art e arte postale (Archivio Amazon); dal 1976 di laser art, dal 1979 di olografia, dal 1985 di arte caotica.

Partecipa alla 16esima Biennale d’arte contemporanea di San

Paolo nel 1980 e alla 49esima Biennale di Venezia del 2001. Nel 2006 realizza “Underwood” intervento site-specific per la Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Gallarate. Nel 2007 presenta il progetto dedicato a Pierre Restany “Camera 312 promemoria per Pierre” alla 52esima Biennale di Venezia.

Dal 2011 è ideatore e curatore di “Padiglione Tibet”, il padiglione per un paese che non c’è, progetto presentato a Venezia con cadenza biennale (Cà Zanardi, Chiesa di Santa Marta SpazioPorto, Palazzo Zenobio) ed esposto successivamente al Palazzo delle Esposizioni a Torino, al Museo Diotti di Casalmaggiore (CR), alla Biblioteca Laudense di Lodi, al Castello Visconteo di Pavia, al Palazzo Ducale di Genova, alla Bienal del Fin del Mundo in Argentina. Nel 2021 presenta la rassegna internazionale di Mail Art “L’Amazzonia deve vivere”, al Museo Diotti di Casalmaggiore (CR), per ricordare i 40 anni dalla fondazione nel 1979 dell’Archivio AMAZON Archive of artistic works and projects about the Amazonic World e a Palazzo

Zanardi Landi di Guardamiglio (LO) presenta“Padiglione Birmania”, di cui è ideatore e curatore, un progetto internazionale di Mail Art per un Myanmar libero e democratico.

Dicono di lui […] Il cursum artistico di Ruggero Maggi si è svolto all’insegna di una sua personale ricerca, che lo ha portato dagli esordi condivisi negli ambiti democratici, trasversali e contigui della visual poetry, della mail art e dell’artist’s book, attraverso la sperimentazione installativa con il laser e l’ologramma, fino a una sua personale interpretazione della “teoria del caos” applicata all’arte. Personaggio diagonale, si compiace di un vessillo senza insegne per amor di libertà. Amante dei materiali primordiali almeno quanto della tecnologia più avanzata, opera come artista, ordisce come teorico, trama come curatore e scrive con assoluta dimestichezza.

Nel suo lavoro le questioni estetiche si confrontano quotidianamente con quelle etiche, definendo una linea di condotta espressiva e umana di grande intensità e autenticità.

Ruggero Maggi is a multimedia artist and curator with multiple interests: since 1973 he has been dealing with visual poetry and artist’s books (Archivio Non Solo Libri); since 1975 with copy art and mail art (Amazon Archive); since 1976 with laser art, since 1979 with holography, since 1985 with chaos art.

He participated in the 16th Biennial of Contemporary Art in Sao Paulo in 1980 and in the 49th Biennial of Venice in 2001. In 2006 he realizes “Underwood” site-specific intervention for the Gallery of Modern Art of Gallarate.

In 2021 he presents the international exhibition of Mail Art “The Amazon must live”, at Diotti Museum in Casalmaggiore (CR), to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the foundation in 1979 of the AMAZON Archive of artistic works and projects about the Amazonic World and at Palazzo Zanardi Landi in Guardamiglio (LO) he presents “Burma Pavilion”, of which he is the creator and curator, an international project of Mail Art for a free and democratic Myanmar.

A word from the critics [...] Ruggero Maggi’s artistic cursum has been carried out under the banner of his personal research, which has led him from the shared beginnings in the democratic, transversal and contiguous fields of visual poetry, mail art and artist’s book, through the installation experimentation with laser and hologram, up to his personal interpretation of the “chaos theory” applied to art. A cross-cutting character, he proudly flies a banner without insignia for the sake of freedom. A lover of primordial materials at least as much as of the most advanced technology, he works as an artist, warps as a theorist, weaves as a curator and writes with absolute familiarity. In his work the aesthetic issues are confronted daily with the ethical ones, defining a line of expressive and human conduct of great intensity and authenticity.

a prima impressione è quella che conta. Magari non è quella destinata a radicarsi. Di certo è in quel primo momento, in quel primo sguardo, nel tocco, quando gli occhi si concentrano su un insieme di elementi e le mani sfiorano un astuccio o soppesano un flacone di profumo, che si accende una percezione. Del valore del prodotto, nei più esperti, o della sua proiezione aspirazionale, vale a dire di cosa - chi quell’item l’ha concepito e ne ha stabilito la commercializzazione attraverso precisi canali - deve raccontare di sé e dell’universo in cui si colloca.

Cosmetica e profumo, in questo senso, attraverso la ricercatezza dei propri stilemi, hanno fatto scuola e questo è valido sia, anche se in maniera più blanda, per i marchi ad ampia distribuzione quanto, con grande evidenza, nell’ambito dei brand di ricerca.

La profumeria artistica - o, appunto, di ricerca o, ancora, di nicchia - è nata con un’ambizione precisa: realizzare piccole produzioni con materie prime di grande pregio da gestire attraverso una distribuzione

del tutto selettiva senza, almeno alle origini, la sovrastruttura di un marketing incalzante se non vincolante.

Il compito di trasmettere, netta, l’allure di questa esclusività era, ed è, affidato al pack, ideato per creare quell’effetto WOW che è un potente driver nel determinare i comportamenti dei consumatori.

Per questo specifico segmento di mercato si tratta dell’essenza del lusso perfetto, da captare, come si dice in inglese, at a glance, a colpo d’occhio. Di questo, e molto altro, si è parlato lo scorso 15 luglio in uno dei Trends Talk organizzati da Packaging Première in collaborazione con Experience Lab, evento italiano nato per incentivare la crescita e la promozione di brand di nicchia del mondo beauty.

Il successo della ricetta giusta sta come sempre nel mix proporzionale degli ingredienti. In primis la carta, sostenuta, preziosa, con lavorazioni che la texturizzano per richiamare, ad esempio, una materia prima utilizzata nella formula o con stampe in rilievo, dorate, cromate, multicolor o ispirate da un

Poi flaconi e vasi, che vedono spesso rivisitati gli standard della produzione industriale o ancor più di frequente vetri disegnati e prodotti ad hoc per dare al brand un’immagine precisa, riconoscibile, in un dialogo di dimensioni e pesi in grado di identificare l’ “importanza” del prodotto.

Non ultimo il cap che, indipendentemente dal materiale, si trova spesso a giocare con la forma, partner insostituibile del contenitore con cui si presenta in tandem, entrambi a dare corpo a una futura icona, tra stile e funzione.

Non solo: sono tanti i brand che hanno scelto di rendere ancora più preziose le proprie creazioni inserendole in coffret speciali.

La scelta è ampia, da quelli in legno, laccati, con rasi e velluti ad accogliere il re flacone, fino a quelli che giocano con la forma, in un richiamo stretto al concetto che sottende al brand.

Non mancano gli outsider, che pur per fragranze haut de gamme, osano scelte inusuali, ad esempio inserendole in bombolette spray come quelle dei writer.

Sovvertendo, e questo è il bello, le regole.

The essence of perfect luxury Artistic perfumery marks the path of innovation, and its packaging becomes the interpreter of a precise balance between aesthetic vocation and precious materials, in a play of references that strikes the heart and the mind.

The first impression is the one that counts. Maybe it’s not the one destined to take root. It is certainly in that first moment, in that first glance, in that first touch, when the eyes focus on a set of elements and the hands skim a case or weigh a bottle of perfume, that a perception is kindled. Of the value of the product, in the case of the more expert, or of its aspirational projection, that is to say of what - whoever conceived that item and established its marketing through precise channels - it must tell about itself and the universe in which it is placed.

Cosmetics and perfume, in this sense, through the refinement of their styles, have set the standard and this is valid

both, even if in a milder way, for brands with a wide distribution and, with great evidence, for luxury brands.

Artistic perfumery - or luxury perfumery or niche perfumery - was born with a precise ambition: to realize small productions with raw materials of great value to be managed through a selective distribution without, at least at the beginning, the superstructure of a pressing if not binding marketing.

The task of transmitting the allure of this exclusivity was, and is, entrusted to the pack, designed to create that WOW effect that is a powerful driver in determining consumer behavior.

For this specific market segment, this is the essence of perfect luxury, to be

grasped, as they say in English, at a glance. This and much more was discussed on 15 July during a Trends Talk organized by Packaging Première in collaboration with Experience Lab, an Italian event created to stimulate the growth and promotion of niche brands in the beauty world.

The success of the right recipe lies, as always, in the proportional mix of ingredients. First and foremost, paper, sustained, precious, with processes that texturize it to recall, for example, a raw material used in the formula or with embossed, gilded, chromed, multicolored prints or inspired by a minimalism that must maintain a difficult balance between aesthetic vocation and precious materials.

Then bottles and vases, which often see the standards of industrial production revisited or, even more frequently, glass designed and produced ad hoc to give the brand a precise, recognizable image, in a

dialogue of dimensions and weights able to identify the “importance” of the product.

Last but not least, the cap, regardless of the material, often plays with the shape, irreplaceable partner of the container with which it is presented in tandem, both giving body to a future icon, between style and function.

And that’s not all: there are many brands that have chosen to make their creations even more precious by placing them in special coffrets.

The choice is wide, from those in wood, lacquered, with satin and velvet to hold the bottle king, to those that play with the shape, in a close reference to the concept behind the brand.

There is no shortage of outsiders, who, despite the haut de gamme fragrances, dare to make unusual choices, for example by inserting them in spray cans like those used by writers.

Subverting, and this is the beauty, the rules.

DAVINES

La sostenibilità come approccio olistico che tocca l’organizzazione, il prodotto, il cliente e contagia i partner. Intervista a Sonia Ziveri, Chief Sustainability Officer di Davines SpA.

DAVINES VILLAGE. Inaugurato nel 2018 a Parma, è stato progettato da Matteo Thun per rispondere alle più stringente domanda di sostenibilità. 77.000 mq, di cui 11.000 di uffici e stabilimento produttivo, è dotato di un orto botanico, sistemi di co-generazione e risponde a logiche green nella vita quotidiana in azienda: dall’uso di materiali riciclabili, alla riduzione della plastica monouso, al 100% di energia prodotta da fonti rinnovabili.

Corp con una lunga storia di attenzione alla sostenibilità, Davines è una family company, leader di mercato, che ha fatto del green la sua bandiera, tingendo di verde ogni aspetto dell’azione e della vita aziendale.

Dalla sede di Parma (“il Village”) al kilometroverdeparma, dalle iniziative sul territorio, alla Carta di Ricerca per il Packaging, non c’è aspetto della strategia aziendale che non sia permeato di valori legati alla sostenibilità. Una strategia riconosciuta dalle performance di mercato e dall’ecosistema di aziende che Davines sta trainando nel suo percorso. Ce ne parla Sonia Ziveri, Chief Sustainability Officer di questo “creatore di buona vita” - così Davines si definisce - nonché produttore e distributore di prodotti tricologici e creme di bellezza.

La sostenibilità è un tema il cui valore è ormai pienamente assunto dall’opinione pubblica: come definirebbe il rapporto tra la maggiore sensibilità del consumatore e il ruolo di innovazione svolto dai grandi player come la sua azienda?

In generale riteniamo centrale il ruolo delle imprese nel percorso di innovazione. Fare scelte dirompenti verso una crescente sostenibilità traccia una rotta

che va al di là del business as usual e che, indirettamente, spinge anche le imprese più grandi verso comportamenti virtuosi. Davines è un’azienda di medie dimensioni, ma con la sua azione riesce a condizionare i big player, creando un modello da cui non ci si può sottrarre. È una dinamica sana, che va verso la tutela del consumatore, perché sta alla responsabilità di ognuno di noi, alle imprese in primo luogo, agire da driver, usando il confronto e favorendo le

Nel quadro delle attività di divulgazione dei temi legati alla sostenibilità nel mondo del packaging, la rivista ItaliaImballaggio e la piattaforma Packmedia.net dedicano da tempo viva attenzione alle scelte aziendali operate in questo ambito da produttori di beni e costruttori di sistemi di confezionamento.

Insieme ai protagonisti del mercato stiamo dunque ragionando dell’importanza strategica, oltre che etica, della sostenibilità, dei risultati ottenuti e degli obiettivi ancora da raggiungere.

E, in linea con la filosofia che vede le donne sempre più coinvolte in profili di area tecnica, come auspicato dal movimento internazionale Women In Tech, puntiamo ad ascoltare la visione di figure femminili che stanno giocando un ruolo chiave nel coniugare innovazione, tecnologia e sostenibilità.

scelte che ci permettono di continuare a sopravvivere nel nostro ecosistema. Il nostro stile di vita attuale e il consumo dell’ambiente che ci circonda non sono sostenibili nel lungo periodo.

Negli anni, siamo stati precursori di un approccio totale alla sostenibilità, che è nel DNA dell’azienda, con un percorso iniziato nel 2005 con una carta etica. Le persone di Davines si sono confrontate con un filosofo, definendo i valori fondanti della propria attività lavorativa, che sono divenuti portanti per le nostre scelte. Valori che hanno poi permesso la costruzione del manifesto della bellezza sostenibile, che definiva le traiettorie di sostenibilità per un’azienda che vuole fare della bellezza il proprio mondo di riferimento. Da allora abbiamo iniziato a lavorare su tanti tavoli progettuali, mossi dalla passione per la sostenibilità, fino a che, nel 2016, dopo un lavoro di organizzazione interna e la definizione di metodi di misurazione, abbiamo ottenuto la certificazione B Corp, molto importante per l’azienda ma anche per la comunità, perché non coinvolge un solo aspetto, ma mira a un approccio olistico, che garantisca la sostenibilità in tutti gli ambiti, sotto il profilo sociale, ambientale ed economico.

Altro tema difficile nella gestione della governance, su cui Davines si sta impegnando, è la costituzione di una B Corp Beauty Coalition, di cui è capofila con Gruppo Natura e Dr Brenner, brand Californiano che fa della sostenibilità il nucleo del suo business e pun-

to di riferimento del settore. L’obiettivo è la definizione di un modus operandi che supporti le aziende aderenti nello sviluppare packaging evoluti, innovare la filiera degli ingredienti, rafforzare la sostenibilità della supply chain nel suo complesso.

Un’azione proattiva, che è diventata quasi una missione per Davines...

Abbiamo messo in campo una serie di iniziative sul territorio che trainano nuove adesioni al modello, con l’obiettivo di un riconoscimento internazionale del concetto di B Corp.

L’approccio, infatti, include aspetti che vanno oltre i dati prettamente “scientifici”, come l’impatto che l’azienda ha sul territorio, sulla sostenibilità della filiera e della catena di fornitura con il coinvolgimento diretto dei fornitori nel percorso. Sotto osservazione sono quindi anche gli stakeholder, parte della comunità che, a vario titolo, ruota attorno all’azienda sviluppando una vera e propria contaminazione. Parma in questo senso è un caso emblematico, con un numero molto elevato di B Corp, che sono state largamente condizionate dalle scelte visionarie di Davines, coinvolgendo tra l’altro i fornitori di packaging e altri materiali, nove dei quali sono a loro volta B Corp. Una contaminazione virtuosa che rafforza il messaggio e la sua circolazione su un sistema di certificazione esclusivo, che vede circa 120 aziende in Italia e 4000 nel mondo.

In questo percorso, che ha la ricerca della bellezza come punto fermo, quanto gioca la spinta all’innovazione?

Davines svolge davvero un ruolo di “driver di innovazione” che spinge anche il mercato e i concorrenti in questa direzione, proprio per l’adesione totale ai valori green che ci contraddistinguono, partendo dalla comunicazione, proseguendo con la costruzione di una sede aziendale assolutamente innovativa, l’immagine di prodotto, la scelta dei materiali nel processo e nell’imballaggio. Siamo un esempio di sostenibilità per la cosmetica professionale, in un contesto dove molti parlano, ma non tutti fanno un lavoro codificato e certificato in questo senso. Riteniamo che sia fondamentale migliorarsi costantemente, perché la sostenibilità è un percorso senza fine che impone impegno e responsabilità. Sono infatti le scelte individuali di ognuno di noi a spingere l’azienda verso risultati tangibili, in un percorso misurabile step by step secondo i protocolli B Corp, che permettono di mappare l’impatto delle azioni.

Sostenibilità del packaging significa ricerca di nuovi materiali, studio di design innovativi e “responsabili”, di una comunicazione ad hoc capace di sottolineare le caratteristiche di un packaging evoluto ed etico (realizzato con minor spreco di risorse, riciclabile etc etc…). Utile al marketing?

Noi lavoriamo nel Village, inaugurato 3 anni fa, il 2 luglio 2018, che è una casa di vetro. I nostri uffici non hanno muri ma vetri, a indicare l’importanza non solo formale ma sostanziale della trasparenza di azienda e persone. In termini di packaging, continuiamo a lavorare sulla ricerca con il nostro Dipartimento R&D packaging, che si occupa di individuare con il marketing le migliori soluzioni a minore impatto.

Ci concentriamo sulla circolarità, guidati da una Carta della Ricerca Packaging per lo sviluppo prodotto dove, in primis, studiamo come alleggerire l’imballaggio, riduciamo all’essenziale i packaging primari, eliminiamo, diminuiamo e razionalizziamo quelli secondari e puntiamo il più possibile a ridurre il consumo di fonti fossili… scelte che ci hanno valso diversi riconoscimenti di CONAI. Prediligiamo

l’uso di materiali riciclati per i nostri packaging: nel 2020 abbiamo raggiunto una percentuale del 60% di packaging da materiale riciclato sul totale del materiale acquistato per imballaggi primari, secondari e terziari. In particolare, usiamo un’altissima percentuale di carta e cartone riciclato (oltre il 90%) e dal 2017 ci impegniamo a sostituire la plastica vergine con plastica riciclata post consumo o bio-based derivata dalla canna da zucchero… materiali, questi ultimi, che nel 2020 hanno superato il 55% del peso totale di plastica acquistata per i nostri imballaggi.

Da alcuni anni eseguiamo analisi LCA su tutti i nuovi prodotti, allo scopo di analizzarne il ciclo di vita e identificare la miglior soluzione in termini di impatto e funzionalità.

Spesso la risposta sono i polimeri, su cui facciamo prevalere quelli da riciclo post-consumo. Ma come sappiamo non è il materiale, ma l’uso che se ne fa, a essere il problema: torna quindi il tema della responsabilità individuale.

Per guidare alla conoscenza e a scelte consapevoli, abbiamo creato un Dossier Packaging Sostenibile ad uso di clienti e forza vendita, dove forniamo dettagli non scontati sulle nostre politiche, sul significato di certe scelte: pensiamo al sistema mono materiale di packaging-etichetta per favorirne la riciclabilità. Offriamo anche indicazioni su come creare un imballo compatto, recuperando oltre il 20% del volume e abbattendo la carbon footprint, ma diamo anche consigli basati sulla riduzione dei consumi, come, ad esempio, usare il prodotto fino all’ultima goccia.

Tutto questo lavoro è certamente utile al marketing, ma tengo a sottolineare che il nostro brand è guidato da valori, ben più che dall’opportunità del momento.

Per noi, la sostenibilità è una scelta condivisa: questo concetto si concretizza in maniera significativa in un gruppo speciale di persone che definiamo “attivatori di sviluppo sosteniblie”. Gli attivatori lavorano in ogni funzione aziendale e, in collaborazione con i responsabili, si coordinano per supportare il team di sostenibilità e ottenere risultati di impatto e misurabili.

ne a scaffale, sull’etichettatura (che, in ultima analisi, è il mezzo più immediato per stabilire un contatto con il consumatore)? Ci offre un suo punto di vista su questo new deal?

La razionalizzazione del pack permette di mitigare l’impatto sull’ambiente, l’uso di materia vergine e di materiale riciclato, riducendo così la carbon footprint. Questo incide sui trasporti, abbattendo così le emissioni.

Quanto alla formazione del consumatore, ci stiamo adoperando per raggiungere i clienti, fornendo loro informazioni chiare, trasparenti e comprensibili. I clienti vanno educati: noi abbiamo a che fare con professionisti dell’estetica, parrucchieri ed estetisti che siano, che diventano a tutti gli effetti i nostri ambasciatori. Ma devono essere formati, supportati con etichette “parlanti,” usando, ad esempio, codici QR e altre forme di realtà aumentata, che permettano un’informazione immediata. Lavoriamo inoltre con Cosmetica Italia, l’associazione di categoria, con cui stiamo cercando di definire il concetto di prodotto green e sostenibile. Sarebbe molto importante avere una certificazione che misuri l’impronta ecologica del prodotto, un tema su cui La Commissione Europea sta lavorando con la Product Environmental Footprint. Stiamo studiando quindi etichette chiare, trasparenti e di semplice lettura, che siano però pienamente informative e veicolo per comunicare i nostri valori.

Sostenibilità del packaging e del prodotto: un principio che, oltre alla tutela dell’ambiente, si amplia al rispetto per il territorio, alla socialità e alla sicurezza, chiudendo un cerchio virtuoso. Qual è la vostra visione dei nuovi stili di vita e di consumo? È evidente che Davines faccia sistema in ogni occasione possibile. Il nostro Presidente, Davide Bollati, è molto attivo in città e, con Parma Io Ci Sto, ha contribuito a coronare il sogno di Parma Capitale della Cultura, spingendo per la candidatura di Capitale Green 2022. Un obiettivo mancato, per ora, ma che ha mostrato come le aziende, l’amministrazione e altri stakeholder possano fare squadra per il bene comune. Collaborando con altre aziende, Davide Bollati ha lanciato l’idea del kilometroverdeparma, divenuto poi un Consorzio, sotto il coordinamento di Maria Paola Chiesi della Chiesi Farmaceutici, che è B Corp a sua volta. Questo gruppo mira a creare una barriera arborea che freni le polveri sottili e riduca l’impatto dell’autostrada lungo il tratto che scorre davanti alle aziende. Un’iniziativa che ha già fatto scuola, portando all’adesione di altre realtà, che hanno creato aree di piantumazione nuove, rispetto al Km Verde originale.

Sempre di Davide Bollati è l’idea dell’Alleanza per la Neutralità Carbonica della Provincia di Parma. In questo caso Comune e Provincia di Parma, I Parchi del Ducato e Regione Emilia-Romagna, si uniscono a Università di Parma e Unione Industriale per la misurazione delle emissioni e la definizione di una strategia di riduzione, compiendo azioni di compensazione.

Una filosofia basata sul lavoro in team, che include anche i 6 paesi dove Davines ha filiali: Londra, Parigi, New York, Deventer nei Paesi Bassi, Hong Kong e Città del Messico, dove il coinvolgimento sul territorio è forte anche dove ci sono solo rappresentanze: la chiave comune, è la condivisione di valori e approccio.

A B Corp with a long history of attention to sustainability, Davines is a family company, market leader, that has made green its flag, painting every aspect of the company’s actions and life green.

From the headquarters in Parma (“the Village”) to the kilometroverdeparma, from local initiatives to the Research Charter for Packaging, there is no aspect of the company’s strategy that is not permeated with values linked to sustainability. A strategy that is recognized by market performance and by the ecosystem of companies that Davines is driving along its path. Sustainability is a topic whose value is now fully assumed by public opinion: how would you define the relationship between the increased sensitivity of consumers and the role of innovation played by large players like your company?

In general, we believe that the role of companies in the path of innovation is central. Making disruptive choices towards increasing sustainability sets a course that goes beyond business as usual and that, indirectly, pushes even the largest companies towards virtuous behavior. Davines is a medium-sized company, but through its actions it manages to influence the big players, creating a model from which we cannot escape. It’s a healthy dynamic that goes towards protecting the consumer, because it’s up to the responsibility of each one of us, companies in the first place, to act as a driver, using comparison and favoring the choices that allow us to continue to survive in our ecosystem. Our current lifestyle and consumption of the environment around us is not sustainable in the long run.

Over the years, we have pioneered a total approach to sustainability, which is in the company’s DNA, with a journey that began in 2005 with an ethical

charter. The people of Davines confronted a philosopher and defined the founding values of their work, which became the basis for our choices. These values then allowed for the construction of the sustainable beauty manifesto, which defined the sustainability trajectories for a company that wants to make beauty its world of reference.

Since then, we started to work on many project tables, driven by the passion for sustainability, until, in 2016, after a work of internal organization and the definition of measurement methods, we obtained the B Corp certification, very important for the company but also for the community, because it does not involve only one aspect, but aims at a holistic approach, which guarantees sustainability in all areas, under the social, environmental and economic profile.

Another difficult issue in the management of governance, which Davines is working on, is the creation of a B Corp Beauty Coalition, of which it is the leader together with Gruppo Natura and Dr Brenner, a Californian brand that makes sustainability the core of its business and a reference point for the sector. The objective is to define a modus operandi that supports member companies in developing advanced packaging, innovating the supply chain of ingredients, and strengthening the sustainability of the supply chain as a whole.

A proactive action, which has become almost a mission for Davines...

We have put in place a series of initiatives in the area that are driving new adhesions to the model, with the goal of international recognition of the B Corp concept.

The approach, in fact, includes aspects that go beyond purely “scientific” data, such as the impact that the company has on the territory, on the sustainability of the supply chain with the direct involvement of suppliers in the process.

Stakeholders are also under observation, part of the community that, for various reasons, revolves around the company,

Parma in this sense is an emblematic case, with a very high number of B Corps that have been largely influenced by the visionary choices of Davines, involving, among other things, suppliers of packaging and other materials, nine of which are themselves B Corps. A virtuous contamination that reinforces the message and its circulation on an exclusive certification system, which has about 120 companies in Italy and 4000 worldwide.

In this path that has the search for beauty as its fixed point, how much does the drive for innovation play a role?

Davines really does play the role of a “driver of innovation” that also pushes the market and competitors in this direction, precisely because of our total adherence to the green values that distinguish us, starting with communication, continuing with the construction of an absolutely innovative company headquarters, the product image, the choice of materials in the process and in packaging. We are an example of sustainability for professional cosmetics, in a context where many people talk, but not everyone does a codified and certified work in this sense.

We believe that it is essential to constantly improve, because sustainability is a never-ending path that requires commitment and responsibility.

In fact, it is the individual choices of each of us that push the company towards tangible results, in a measurable path step by step according to B Corp protocols, which allow to map the impact of actions.

Sustainability of packaging means research into new materials, the study of innovative and “responsible” design, ad hoc communication capable of underlining the characteristics of an evolved and ethical packaging (made with less waste of resources, recyclable, etc...). A useful weapon for marketing?

We work in the Village, inaugurated 3 years ago, on July 2, 2018, which is a glass house. our offices are made of glass, not walls. This indicates the importance, not only formal, that

transaprency plays for the people and the group. In terms of packaging, we continue to work on research with our Packaging R&D Department, which works with the marketing department in order to identify better solution with a lower impact. We aim at circularity, guided by a Packaging Research Charter for product development where, first of all, we aim at lightening packaging, reducing primary packaging to the essential, eliminating, decreasing and rationalizing secondary packaging and aiming as much as possible to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels... choices that have earned us several CONAI awards.

We prefer the use of recycled materials for our packaging: in 2020, we have reached a percentage of 60% of packaging from recycled material on the total material purchased for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging. In particular, we use a very high percentage of recycled paper and cardboard (over 90%) and since 2017 we have been committed to replacing virgin plastic with post-consumer recycled or bio-based plastic derived from sugarcane... materials, the latter of which have exceeded 55% of the total weight of plastic purchased for our packaging in 2020. For several years we have been carrying out LCA analyses on all new products, to analyze their lifecycle and identify the best solution in terms of impact and functionality. Often the answer is polymers, with post-consumer recycled materials prevailing. But as we know, it is not the material, but the use that is made of it, that is the problem: the theme of individual responsibility returns.

In order to guide towards knowledge and informed choices, we have created a Sustainable Packaging Dossier for use by customers and sales force, where we provide details that are not taken for granted on our policies, on the meaning of certain choices: think of the monomaterial packaging-label system to promote recyclability.

We also provide indications on how to create a compact packaging, recovering more than 20% of the volume and reducing the carbon footprint, but we also provide advice based on the reduction of consumption, such as, for

[ example, using the product up to the last drop. All this work is certainly useful for marketing, but I would like to stress that our brand is driven by values, much more than by the opportunity of the moment.

For us, sustainability is a shared choice: this concept is significantly embodied in a special group of people, whom we call “sustainable development activators” who work in every corporate function and, in collaboration with managers, coordinate to support the sustainability team and achieve impactful and measurable results.

What are the repercussions on logistics, shelf display and labeling (which, in the final analysis, is the most immediate means of establishing contact with the consumer)? Can you give us your point of view on this new deal?

The rationalization of the pack makes it possible to mitigate the impact on the environment, the use of virgin and recycled material, thus reducing the carbon footprint. This has an impact on

transportation, thus lowering emissions.

As for consumer education, we are working to reach out to customers, providing them with clear, transparent and understandable information.

Customers must be educated: we are dealing with beauty professionals, hairdressers and beauticians, who become our ambassadors to all intents and purposes. But they need to be trained, supported with “talking labels,” using, for example, QR codes and other forms of augmented reality, which allow for immediate information. We are also working with Cosmetica Italia, the trade association, with which we are trying to define the concept of green and sustainable products. It would be very important to have a certification that measures the ecological footprint of the product, an issue on which the European Commission is working with the Product Environmental Footprint. We are therefore studying clear, transparent labels, easy to read, that are fully informative and a vehicle to promote our values.

Sustainability of packaging and

product: a principle that, in addition to protecting the environment, extends to respect for the territory, sociality and safety, closing a virtuous circle. What is your vision of new lifestyles and consumption?

It’s clear that Davines works as a system on every possible occasion. Our President, Davide Bollati, is very active in the city and, with Parma Io Ci Sto, has contributed to the dream of Parma as Capital of Culture, pushing for the candidacy of Green Capital 2022. A goal that has been missed, for now, but which has shown how companies, the administration and other stakeholders can work together for the common good. Working with other companies, Davide Bollati launched the idea of kilometroverdeparma, which then became a Consortium, under the coordination of Maria Paola Chiesi of Chiesi Farmaceutici, which is also a B Corp. This group aims to create a tree barrier that will curb fine dust and reduce the impact of the highway along the stretch that runs in front of the

companies. An initiative that has already set the standard, leading to the adhesion of other companies, which have created new planting areas, compared to the original kilometroverdeparma.

Also by Davide Bollati is the idea of the Alliance for Carbon Neutrality of the Province of Parma. In this case, the Municipality and Province of Parma, I Parchi del Ducato and the EmiliaRomagna Region join forces with the University of Parma and Unione Industriale to measure emissions and define a reduction strategy, carrying out offsetting actions.

A philosophy based on teamwork, which also includes the 6 countries where Davines has branches: London, Paris, New York, Deventer in the Netherlands, Hong Kong and Mexico City, where the involvement in the territory is strong even where there are only representatives: the common key is the sharing of values and approach.

ggi che temi come circolarità e sostenibilità di materiali, azioni e processi produttivi sono centrali sia a monte che a valle nella vita di un prodotto di bellezza, le tre manifestazioni Sana, Cosmofarma e Cosmoprof concentrano la propria attenzione sul tema.

Con il sostegno della filiera cosmetica del made in Italy hanno infatti sostenuto il progetto The Neverending Palette, che traduce i concetti in testimonianza concreta di un approccio avvertito sempre più come essenziale nonché trasversale a tutto il mondo del beauty, sia sul piano dello sviluppo creativo che dell’industrializzazione, oltre che in relazione alla percezione del consumatore.

Un prodotto che guarda al futuro. Ogni componente della palette di make-up per occhi ideata ad hoc per questo progetto è stata selezionata per innescare un ciclo di riutilizzo in potenza senza fine neverending, appunto - grazie a materie prime che, reintrodotte sul mercato, possono rivivere.

Lasciare il segno. A suggellare l’impegno di un dialogo perpetuo - neverending - tra uomo e ambiente, il simbolo dell’infinito integrato al segno grafico della comunicazione, ripreso sia nella palette stessa sia nell’omonima installazione che, dal 9 al 12 settembre a SANA 2021, supporterà a livello visivo e spaziale la lettura del progetto.

Prevista all’interno del nuovo Pad. 37 del quartiere fieristico di Bologna che ospita la manifestazione, l’installazione accoglierà tutti gli ospiti, raccontando i quattro cicli di vita del prodotto attraverso la combinazione di forme organiche e trasparenze.

A packaging, produzione, raccolta e riciclo momenti consequenziali del ciclo vitale della palette - sono dedicate altrettante sezioni spaziali dell’aerea espositiva, all’interno delle quali approfondire i diversi focus e il contributo all’iniziativa dei singoli partner.

The Neverending Palette CIRCULARITY AND HIGH RANGE What is the life cycle of a cosmetic? And more... is it possible to recover the materials that compose it? These are extremely topical questions, to which Sana, Cosmofarma and Cosmoprof, together with the Italian cosmetics industry, provide a concrete answer with The Neverending Palette: the story of how a make-up product is born and lives again.

Now that issues such as circularity and sustainability of materials, actions and production processes are central both upstream and downstream in the life of a beauty product, the three events Sana, Cosmofarma and Cosmoprof are focusing their attention on this theme.

In fact, with the support of the made in Italy cosmetics supply chain, they have supported The Neverending Palette project, which translates concepts into concrete evidence of an approach that is increasingly perceived as essential as well as transversal to the entire beauty world, both in terms of creative development and industrialization, as well as in relation to consumer perception.

palette created ad hoc for this project has been selected to trigger a cycle of reuse with never-ending power - neverending, in fact - thanks to raw materials that, once reintroduced into the market, can be revived.

The project, whose creative direction has been entrusted to Omar Pallante of AVP - ArteVetrinaProject, has as its protagonists - in addition to the institutional realities already mentioned and Hera SpA - some partners of excellence in the reference chain, with the precise aim of making tangible a product projected towards a shared future and sharable in terms of both design and production.

The bet? To reinvent, without neglecting the haut de gamme appeal and contemporaneity - the formula is vegan - a product that today is often

multi-material, difficult to recycle and does not derive from a circular economy.

The conscious choice of alternative materials and processes, on the other hand, means looking at the world from a different perspective. And suggesting these possibilities, reading one’s own time and anticipating trends, is at the heart of every exhibition.

Ideato dai designer di 63 DE-SIGN, il concept della confezione punta a valorizzare gli aspetti che caratterizzano l’identità del prodotto, richiamandone le origini, l’italianità, e la cultura grafica del periodo in cui è nato, agli albori nostra storia industriale.

Sulla base di questi spunti, è stato ideato un design che ruota attorno alla forma, stilizzata e immediatamente riconoscibile, del biscotto, utilizzata come segno grafico distintivo e modulo geometrico per costruire la trama di pizzo e decori; a partire dalla stessa shape è stato inoltre sviluppato un font ad hoc per il nome del brand. tan, mediante lavorazioni e materiali innovativi.

The chromatic palette has been lightened with LUMAFIN® Green, which restores light and three-dimensionality to the design and makes the look brighter and more cheerful, softening the seriousness of the style.

In un’ottica di espansione su scala globale, il brand prodotto da F54 ha deciso di rivisitare completamente la propria immagine, affidando a Gentlebrand la realizzazione di un packaging dalle forme e dal design distintivi, in linea con il posizionamento premium del prodotto.

Realizzata in vetro satinato, la bottiglia sembra essere stata scolpita nel ghiaccio, trasmettendo la sensazione di un distillato fresco e pronto per essere servito.

Un design minimale ma ricercato, arricchito da un pattern di foglie di dragoncello e da uno studiato gioco di volumi, ne enfatizza l’unicità.

The renowned Armenian vodka Arax originates from an infusion of tarragon, an aromatic herb that, together with local mineral waters, constitutes the key element of the precious distillate.

With a view to expansion on a global scale, the brand produced by F54 has decided to completely revise its image, entrusting Gentlebrand with the creation of a packaging with distinctive shapes and design, in line with the premium positioning of the product.

Made of frosted glass, the bottle seems to have been sculpted in ice, conveying the sensation of a fresh distillate ready to be served.

A minimal but refined design, enriched by a pattern of tarragon leaves and a studied game of volumes, emphasizes its uniqueness.

Gentlebrand’s approach, which integrates design and feasibility, was fundamental in the development of Arax; once the brand strategy had been defined and the design concept selected, the “packaging tailors” of the Italian agency interfaced directly with the glassworks that supplies F54, making sure that the design and all the modifications were feasible.

This is an important result for Gentlebrand which, with Arax, brings a new contribution to the international Wine & Spirits market, showing in the field how design and technical know-how are the key assets of a winning strategy.

Gli interventi in sintesi • È stato il Presidente GIFASP Alessandro Tomassini ad aprire i lavori pubblici del Convegno nel pomeriggio di venerdì 23 luglio, presentando una relazione sulle attività e sulla gestione del Gruppo durante gli ultimi due anni di emergenza sanitaria, che hanno grosso modo coinciso con il periodo della sua presidenza, iniziata ufficialmente a giugno 2019.

• Marco Cazzola (Cazzola Consulting) ha illustrato una serie di opportunità e i relativi strumenti fiscali e finanziari per le imprese cartotecniche nel post pandemia, in un contesto di crisi della globalizzazione incontrollata.

Folding the future FOCUS ON ON 40th National Conference GIFASP. A small step towards the return to normality 23-24 July 2021, Venice, Hotel Hilton Molino Stucky Many months after the last meeting (Palermo, June 21-22, 2019), GIFASP called together its members on July 23-24 for an in-person event, recording to all intents and purposes a good participation, considering the continuing climate of health emergency.

With its emblematic title - “A small step towards the return to normality” - the 40th GIFASP National Convention was above all a stimulating and constructive opportunity to return to the life of the association, made up of personal relationships and discussions on the most interesting and topical issues for the sector and the supply chain of carton and folding box manufacturers.

This year, the topics on the table were essentially linked to the post-covid scenarios of packaging and the paper industry as a whole.

INTERVENTIONS AT A GLANCE • Elisabetta Bottazzoli, Project Manager della Federazione Carta e Grafica, ha presentato le opportunità per le aziende della filiera cartaria di superare le criticità del covid grazie a mirate strategie di sostenibilità ambientale, sociale ed economica.

• Michele Bianchi, in qualità di Presidente CEPI Cartonboard, si è soffermato sullo scenario internazionale approfondendo l’andamento delle materie prime cartacee per il comparto degli astucci cellulosici.

• Infine, Gianandrea Totaro, coordinatore del Comitato Tecnico Gifasp, ha presentato un puntuale aggiornamento delle attività tecniche di formazione/informazione portate avanti dalla Gifasp Academy a beneficio delle cartotecniche associate.

Spazio alla condivisione e alla convivialità. Gioioso e gioviale il momento della consegna delle targhe celebrative alle aziende A. De Robertis & Figli, Abar, Box Marche, Grafiche Favillini, Icis, Litocartotecnica Ival, Lucaprint, associate Gifasp da 25 anni; carichi di significato anche i riconoscimenti a La Litografica di F. Fornaroli e a Palladio Group per i loro 50 anni di associazionismo in Gifasp.

In ultima analisi, la due giorni veneziana si è svolta all’insegna della condivisione e del rispetto, testimoniando inoltre la capacità di aggregazione del gruppo Gifasp, che può contare sulla partecipazione attiva di aziende cartotecniche d’eccellenza, ampiamente riconosciute sul mercato nazionale ed estero.

DATI E FATTI. Dall’Europa all’Italia, l’andamento di mercato di una tipologia di confezionamento largamente impiegata in tutti i settori merceologici.

Gli imballaggi cellulosici I n termini di tonnellate, il settore degli imballaggi cellulosici è il più rappresentativo dell’intero comparto imballaggi in Italia (32,9% di share).

Secondo le indicazioni esposte in Imballaggio in cifre, sono 5 le tipologie di confezionamento che afferiscono al settore: - fogli e contenitori di cartone ondulato (compreso espositori); - astucci e scatole pieghevoli di cartoncino; - sacchi in carta di grandi dimensioni; - altri imballaggi cellulosici (fusti in cellulosa, tubi, carta da incarto, sacchetti piccoli e shopper, etichette, supporti in carta nel settore maglieria e abbigliamento, ecc.); - contenitori rigidi accoppiati a prevalenza carta.

TREND DI MERCATO IN EUROPA

Analizzando i dati 2020 a livello europeo (EU a 27 paesi), l’industria cartotecnica trasformatrice - cui fa capo anche l’industria degli imballaggi di carta e cartone registra un trend complessivo in calo, con

la produzione al -3,9%. I risultati peggiori sono stati registrati nel 2° e 3° trimestre 2020, periodo di lockdown, mentre il 4° trimestre ha vissuto miglioramenti tendenziali.

Il fatturato ha evidenziato un calo generalizzato più significativo (-7,9% rispetto al 2019); a livello di singoli Paesi, il giro di affari peggiore è da imputare a Germania e Spagna (entrambe al -8,2%), seguite dalla Francia (-7,3%); decisamente migliore, invece, il trend del fatturato italiano che cala solo del -3%.

TREND DI MERCATO IN ITALIA

Nel nostro Paese, il settore degli imballaggi cellulosici riesce a mantenere un certo equilibrio della rappresentatività rispetto al totale del comparto packaging, sia se la si analizza in termini di peso (33%) sia in relazione al fatturato (24% circa).

Nel 2020, nonostante il difficile momento economico vissuto dall’intero settore manifatturiero, l’industria degli imballaggi di

carta e cartone è riuscita a registrare un andamento positivo.

Un successo significativo per l’Italia, con una produzione di imballaggi di carta in crescita dell’1%, arrivando a superare le 5.540 t/000.

Andamento diversificato invece per il fatturato, che chiude con una flessione pari al -3% rispetto al 2019, assestandosi sugli 8.054 mln di euro.

Anche il commercio estero risulta in calo, sempre con dati espressi in tonnellate: esportazioni al -3,9%, importazioni al -36,6% (!).

L’utilizzo apparente (ricavato dalla formula produzione + importazione – esportazione), che non tiene conto del movimento scorte, risulta invece stabile rispetto all’anno precedente.

Il riciclo e le quotazioni delle materie prime L’attività di riciclo degli imballaggi in carta e cartone continua a crescere: nel 2020 si è raggiunto e superato l’87% di tasso di riciclo, anticipando di 10 anni gli obiettivi fissati per il 2030. Risultato molto importante conseguito grazie al lavoro di COMIECO il consorzio che, in ambito CONAI, si occupa di garantire e promuovere appunto il riciclo degli imballaggi in carta e cartone.

Prezzi materie prime. Nel 2020 le medie relative alle quotazioni dei prezzi delle materie prime utilizzate per produrre imballaggi in carta e cartone risultano tutte in calo.

I prezzi presi in analisi sono quelli della Camera di Commercio di Milano e fanno registrare un -6,2% medio per i prezzi relativi al cartone ondulato, -9% per la Carta da involgere, -9,5% per la carta utilizzata per produrre sacchi, e -0,8% per i cartoncini patinati. Anche per quello che riguarda la carta proveniente da riciclo le medie delle quotazioni risultano in calo intorno al -10%.

I cali non riguardano solo i prezzi quotati nel nostro paese ma anche le quotazioni rilevate a livello europeo.

degli imballaggi di carta e cartone importati proviene infatti da paesi europei, così come l’87,5% del nostro export resta nel Vecchio Continente. Francia e Germania rimangono i paesi con i quali abbiamo gli scambi più significativi: i cugini d’Oltralpe assorbono il 30,5% delle nostre esportazioni in ambito UE, mentre importiamo dalla Germania una quota del 31,5% sul totale delle importazioni dall’UE. Per quanto riguarda il resto del mondo, il 93% delle importazioni extra UE arriva dalla Cina, mentre il nostro export extra UE è indirizzato per il 72% circa verso l’Africa.

IN DETTAGLIO, LE TIPOLOGIE DI IMBALLAGGI CELLULOSICI

Fogli e contenitori di cartone ondulato Il materiale è utilizzato in prevalenza nella produzione di scatole utilizzate per il trasporto e lo stoccaggio di merci o come imballaggio secondario destinato a contenere prodotti a loro volta confezionati in imballaggi primari.

Ormai da alcuni anni l’andamento del comparto, anche nel nostro Paese, è influenzato in positivo dal ricorso alla compravendita di beni online, una tipologia di distribuzione che, solo in Italia, ha toccato nel 2020 un tasso di crescita del 30%. Questo trend ha portato a movimentare circa 420 milioni di spedizioni, da cui l’industria del cartone ondulato ha ricevuto un grande impulso.

Nel 2020 gli imballaggi in cartone ondulato hanno rappresentato il 73,9% del totale imballaggi in carta e cartone, rappresentatività in aumento rispetto a quella registrata l’anno precedente. La produzione raggiunge le 4.000 t/000 (+1,7% rispetto al 2019).

Non è solo il mercato online a influire positivamente sul comparto, aiutato anche dal progressivo ricorso al cartone ondulato in ambito ortofrutta per la produzione di cassette che, piano piano, stanno soppiantando quelle di legno.

Per quanto riguarda il commercio estero si registra sempre un saldo commerciale positivo, con le esportazioni che continuano a essere nettamente superiori alle importazioni. Nel 2020 però il commercio estero ha segnato andamenti negativi: -63% per le importazioni e un limitato -4% per le esportazioni.

In base all’analisi dei settori utilizzatori di cartone ondulato, secondo i numeri elaborati nella Banca Dati dell’Istituto Italiano Imballaggio, il 34,6% del cartone ondulato è destinato al settore alimentare, il 12,6% all’ortofrutta e il 16,8% alle bevande, per un totale del 64% (settore food). La restante parte si suddivide tra arredamento (10,9%) e altro (25,1%).

Da sottolineare la tendenza di crescita del settore alimentare rispetto agli altri.

Astucci e scatole di cartoncino teso Le confezioni di cartoncino teso rappresentano il 15,4% degli imballaggi in carta e cartone. Possono essere composti al 100% di cartoncino oppure abbinati a film di PE o a film di alluminio. L’abbinamento del film plastico o del film di alluminio si rende in genere necessario per conferire all’astuccio un aspetto più accattivante, come accade per esempio per quelli impiegati nel settore cosmetico, o per particolari esigenze legate all’impiego.

Nel 2020 la produzione è risultata in calo dello 0,3%.

Delle circa 819 t/000 prodotte, l’83% è rappresentato dagli astucci pieghevoli, la restante parte è rappresentata da scatole di varie dimensioni.

Per quanto concerne il commercio estero, le esportazioni calano in maniera significativa (-5,9%), mentre le importazioni risultano al -3,5%.

Questa tipologia di imballaggi è impiegata per il 45,9% in ambito food, per il 19,6% in ambito beverage (entrambe le aree risultano in crescita). Il 9,8% è destinato al cosmetico e farmaceutico, mentre il restante 24,7% è imputabile alla voce “altro non food”, dove rientrano per esempio i piccoli e grandi elettrodomestici, pentole e utensili da cucina, prodotti per la detergenza domestica, prodotti accessori di arredo, ecc.

Sacchi di carta di grande dimensione In base alle elaborazioni Gipsac (uno dei Gruppi di Specializzazione di Assografici), nel 2020 il settore, con una share pari al 3,7% sul totale degli imballaggi cellulosici, registra un calo pari al -1,7%. Questa tipologia di packaging è utilizzata in prevalenza nel settore “costruzioni” per confezionare materiali edili (57,5%), cui segue il settore alimentare (17,9%) per l’imballaggio di farine, cereali, ecc. e quello dei mangimi (10,5%). La voce altro rappresenta il 14,1%.

Altri imballaggi cellulosici La voce comprende diverse tipologie di packaging, come fusti di cellulosa e tubi per confezionare bottiglie, tubi cellulosici per carta a uso domestico, carta da incarto, carta pergamena e solfito da incarto, carta ondulata, sacchetti piccoli, shopper, incarti automatici, fogli di carta per supporto capi di abbigliamento, etichette, piattaforme ed espositori di cartone teso e cartoncino, ecc.

Nel 2020 la voce in analisi registra un calo pari al -1% circa, con le importazioni in calo del 32,6% e le esportazioni, anch’esse in calo, ma del -9,4%.

La produzione espressa in tonnellate è pari a 391 t/000.

Contenitori accoppiati rigidi a prevalenza carta Nella presente analisi facciamo rientrare anche gli imballaggi accoppiati in prevalenza carta, anche se in Imballaggio in cifre vengono analizzati in un capitolo a parte. Per questi imballaggi permane un certa stabilità da diversi anni. Sono indubbiamente una tipologia di packaging fortemente radicata nei principali settori utilizzatori, quali latte e derivati e succhi di frutta.

Cellulose packaging FACTS AND FIGURES. From Europe to Italy, the market trend of a type of packaging widely used in all sectors.

In terms of tons, the cellulose packaging sector is the most representative of the entire packaging sector in Italy (32.9% share).

According to the indications presented in Packaging in figures, there are 5 types of of packaging that belong to this sector: - corrugated cardboard sheets and containers (including displays); - cartons and folding carton boxes; - large paper bags; - other cellulosic packaging (cellulose drums, tubes, wrapping paper, small bags and shoppers, labels, paper supports in the knitwear and clothing sector, etc.); - laminated rigid containers with a prevalence of paper.

MARKET TRENDS IN EUROPE Analysing the 2020 data at European level (EU 27 countries), the converting paper industry - to which the paper and cardboard packaging industry also belongs - recorded an overall downward trend, with production at -3.9%. The worst results were recorded in Q2 and Q3 2020, a lockdown period, while Q4 experienced trend improvements.

Turnover showed a more significant overall decline (-7.9% compared to 2019); at the level of individual countries, the worst turnover is to be attributed to Germany and Spain (both at -8.2%), followed by France (-7.3%); decidedly better, however, is the trend of Italian turnover, which drops only -3%.

MARKET TRENDS IN ITALY In Italy, the cellulose packaging sector manages to maintain a certain balance of representation with respect to the total packaging sector, both if it is analyzed in terms of weight (33%) and in relation to turnover (about 24%).

In 2020, despite the difficult economic moment experienced by the entire manufacturing sector, the paper and cardboard packaging industry managed to record a positive trend.

This was a significant success for Italy, with production of paper packaging increasing by 1%, reaching over 5,540 t/000. Diverse trend instead for the turnover, which closes with a decrease of -3% compared to 2019, settling at 8,054 mln euros.

Foreign trade is also down, again with

data expressed in tons: exports at -3.9%, imports at -36.6% (!).

The apparent utilization (derived from the formula production + import - export), which does not take into account the movement of stocks, is instead stable compared to the previous year.

The majority of trade takes place in Europe: 86.7% of imported paper and cardboard packaging comes from European countries, just as 87.5% of our exports remain in the Old Continent.

France and Germany remain the countries with which we have the most significant exchanges: the transalpine cousins absorb 30.5% of our exports within the EU, while we import from Germany a share of 31.5% of total imports from the EU. As regards the rest of the world, 93% of non-EU imports come from China, while around 72% of our non-EU exports go to Africa.

IN DETAIL, THE TYPES OF CELLULOSE PACKAGING

Corrugated cardboard sheets and containers This material is mainly used in the production of boxes used for transport and storage of goods or as secondary packaging to contain products that are, in turn, packaged in primary packaging.

For some years now, the trend of the sector, even in our country, is positively influenced by the use of online buying and selling of goods, a type of distribution that, only in Italy, has touched in 2020 a growth rate of 30%. This trend has led to the movement of about 420 million shipments, from which the corrugated industry has received a great boost. In 2020, corrugated cardboard packaging accounted for 73.9% of total paper and cardboard packaging, an increase in representation compared to the previous year. Production reached 4,000 t/000 (+1.7% compared to 2019).

It is not only the online market that positively influences the sector, also helped by the progressive recourse to corrugated cardboard in the fruit and vegetable sector for the production of crates that, little by little, are supplanting wooden ones. As far as foreign trade is concerned, there is still a positive trade balance, with exports continuing to be significantly higher than imports. In 2020,

Recycling and quotations of raw materials The recycling of paper and cardboard packaging continues to grow: in 2020 the recycling rate reached and exceeded 87%, 10 years ahead of the targets set for 2030. A very important result achieved thanks to the work of COMIECO, the consortium that, within CONAI, is responsible for guaranteeing and promoting the recycling of paper and cardboard packaging.

Raw material prices. In 2020, the average prices of raw materials used to produce paper and cardboard packaging will all fall.

The prices taken into analysis are those of the Milan Chamber of Commerce and show an average -6.2% for prices relating to corrugated cardboard, -9% for paper to be wrapped, -9.5% for paper used to produce sacks, and -0.8% for coated cardboard. Average prices for paper coming from recycling are also down around -10%.

The decreases concern not only the prices quoted in our country but also the quotations recorded at European level.

however, foreign trade showed negative trends: -63% for imports and a limited -4% for exports. On the basis of the analysis of the sectors that use corrugated cardboard, according to the numbers processed in the Italian Packaging Institute database, 34.6% of corrugated cardboard is destined for the food sector, 12.6% for fruit and vegetables and 16.8% for beverages, for a total of 64% (food sector). The remaining part is divided between furnishings (10.9%) and other (25.1%). The growing trend of the food sector compared to the others should be underlined.

Folding cartons and boxes Folding carton boxes represent 15.4% of paper and cardboard packaging. They can be composed of 100% cardboard or combined with PE film or aluminum film.

The combination of plastic film or aluminum film is usually necessary to give the carton a more attractive appearance, as is the case, for example, with those used in the cosmetics sector, or for special requirements related to use.

In 2020, production was down by 0.3%.

Of the approximately 819 t/000 produced, 83% is accounted for by folding cartons, the remainder being boxes of various sizes.

As far as foreign trade is concerned, exports dropped significantly (-5.9%), while imports were down 3.5%.

This type of packaging is used for 45.9% in the food sector and 19.6% in the beverage sector (both areas are growing). 9.8% is used for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, while the remaining 24.7% is attributable to the item “other non-food”, which includes, for example, small and large household appliances, cookware and kitchen utensils, household cleaning products, furnishing accessories, etc.

Large paper sacks According to elaborations carried out by Gipsac (one of Assografici’s Specialization Groups), in 2020 the sector, with a 3.7% share of total cellulose packaging, will record a -1.7% decrease. This type of packaging is mainly used in the “construction” sector to package building materials (57.5%), followed by the food sector (17.9%) to package flour, cereals, etc., and the animal feed sector (10.5%). The item other represents 14.1%.

Other cellulosic packaging This item includes various types of packaging, such as cellulose drums and tubes for packaging bottles, cellulosic tubes for household paper, wrapping paper, parchment and sulfite wrapping paper, corrugated paper, small bags, shoppers, automatic wrappers, paper sheets for garment support, labels, platforms and displays made of folding carton and cardboard, etc. In 2019, the item under analysis shows a decline of about -1%, with imports down 32.6% and exports also down, but by -9.4%.

Production expressed in tons is 391 t/000.

Laminated rigid containers with a prevalence of paper This analysis also includes paper-based laminated containers, even though they are analyzed in a separate chapter in Packaging in Figures. For this type of packaging there has been a certain stability for several years. They are undoubtedly a type of packaging strongly rooted in the main user sectors, such as milk and derivatives and fruit juices.

Le NR (Normas Regulamentadoras) emesse dal Ministero del Lavoro e dell’occupazione del Paese regolano con disposizioni e procedure rigorose tutti i requisiti inerenti al panorama industriale, inclusa la sicurezza delle macchine e dei luoghi di lavoro.

Ad esempio, la NR 12 definisce nello specifico i requisiti minimi di sicurezza - a partire dalle fasi di progettazione e realizzazione - delle macchine destinate all’import e alla commercializzazione in Brasile,

anche per il solo scopo espositivo all’interno di eventi fieristici.

Altre leggi importanti nel settore macchine industriali sono la NR 10, NR 13, NR 17, NR 20, NR 26 (tabella 1). La principale differenza tra il mercato brasiliano e quello della Comunità Europea riguarda le procedure di verifica e accettazione della macchina che, per obbligo di legge, devono essere compiute da un ingegnere brasiliano legalmente qualificato, iscritto al registro CREA, con determina la conformità e di finalizzare la registrazione del bene stesso.

Other important laws in the industrial machinery sector are NR 10, NR 13, NR 17, NR 20, NR 26 (Table 1). L’ultima edizione della NR 12 di giugno 2019 ha avvicinato molto il panorama normativo brasiliano a quello europeo, sia per quanto riguarda la progettazione che la realizzazione delle macchine industriali. È altrettanto importante tener presente che il documento principale contenuto all’interno di un Laudo De Validação secondo NR 12 consiste nell’analisi dei rischi che oggi, a differenza di quanto avveniva in passato, potrà essere completamente accettata qualora sia basata sullo standard ISO 12100 con applicazione del metodo ibrido ISO/TR 14121-2 e calcolo del Performance Level secondo ISO 13849-1.

Brazil and CE: regulatory convergences and specificities The latest edition of NR 12 in June 2019 has brought the Brazilian regulatory landscape much closer to the European one, both in terms of design and manufacture of industrial machinery.

It is also important to keep in mind that the main document contained within a Laudo De Validação according to NR 12 consists of the risk analysis which today, unlike in the past, can be fully accepted if it is based on the ISO 12100 standard with application of the hybrid method ISO/TR 14121-2 and calculation of the Performance Level according to ISO 13849-1.

Finally, in the case of machines installed in a classified environment, or which generate potentially explosive enclaves within them (whose legislative references are contained in: NR 10, NR 12, NR 20 and Portaria n. 179/2010), the attention during the construction phase should be focused only on the electrical

METHODOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABILITY BASED ON FACTS

Uno strumento a disposizione dei soci, per sostenerne il percorso di adeguamento agli standard di sostenibilità che si affianca, come raccontato dalla Presidente Gipea Elisabetta Brambilla, alle molte iniziative volute dal gruppo sul fronte della comunicazione, con nuovi strumenti, formazione, corsi dedicati all’uso dei social e in generale, la costituzione di una serie di alleanze associative pensate per rafforzare la filiera e creare sinergie.

METODOLOGIA PER UNA SOSTENIBILITÀ BASATA SUI FATTI

Come sottolineato da Bottazzoli, la sostenibilità è sempre più centrale nella vita delle aziende, in virtù della diffusione di “certificazioni” che richiedono a fornitori e stakeholder di adeguarsi. In molti casi, pur avendo le aziende del comparto le carte in regola, con attrezzature e qualificati percorsi interni di governance, l’assenza di processi certificati e standardizzati rischia di far perdere occasioni di business, o di portare a esclusioni da catene di fornitura importanti.

Indicatori qualitativi e quantitativi devono quindi rispondere a logiche di validazione, secondo una metodologia riconosciuta da una parte terza. Questo

Nel primo anno, il percorso partecipato si è svolto partendo da un assessment, che ha permesso di definire il protocollo, sviluppato in parallelo con il software. Il risultato è il posizionamento delle filiere coinvolte Assocarta, Acimga e Assografici - sui temi di sostenibilità, economia circolare, carbon neutrality, analizzando il conte-

Lo sviluppo del tool software è in corso di finalizzazione e verrà messo a disposizione delle aziende per codificare competenze, risorse, esigenze che permettano la condivisione di dati sulla base di un elenco di indicatori internazionali, nazionali, tassonomie, punti del green deal.

Tutti questi elementi, isolati, razionalizzati e calati nei contesti aziendali e di settore, permettono alle aziende di aderire in maniera modulata, sulla base delle loro caratteristiche, facendo del tool un vero strumento di analisi.

La metodologia è il risultato del lavoro di tre gruppi in rappresentanza delle associazioni, dove si sono confrontate aziende campione, che hanno permesso di calare nella realtà il progetto, rendendolo rispondente alle esigenze aziendali. Le aziende, inoltre, sono protagoniste in tutte le fasi, sempre operative sul campo per testare il software e validarne ogni aspetto sul piano operativo.

La struttura del tool permette quindi di giungere a report riconducibili a standard di sostenibilità di livello internazionale secondo la Global Reporting Initiative, per aiutare le aziende già pronte nel percorso di miglioramento, senza lasciare indietro chi parte da zero.

L’ente terzo SGS è il partner che valida la metodologia di software e protocollo, per renderla spendibile e riconoscibile a livello internazionale.

Il contributo della Federazione, infine, non si ferma alla fase di management, ma prevede un vero e proprio accompagnamento con pool di esperti a disposizione per lo sviluppo della parte finanziaria e organizzativa del report di sostenibilità, che acquisisce così una logica univoca per tutti gli aderenti alla Federazione.

The contribution of the Federation, finally, does not stop at the management phase, but provides a real accompaniment with a pool of experts available for the development of the financial and organizational part of the sustainability report, which thus acquires a unique logic for all members of the Federation.

PepsiCo sells Tropicana and Naked Juice

PepsiCo has announced the sale of Tropicana, Naked and other North American juice brands to French private equity firm Pai Partners.

The $3.3 billion deal is part of the group’s efforts to move away from high-sugar drinks in favour of zerocalorie beverages and healthy snacks, growth segments in which the group intends to concentrate its investments.

The agreement involves the creation of a new joint venture in which the group will retain a 39% share and will have exclusive rights for the distribution of the brands in the United States, particularly in the food service segment.

PepsiCo acquired Tropicana in 1998 for about US $3.3 billion and Naked Juice almost ten years later for US $150 million.

The transaction is expected to close in 2021 or early 2022.

Latteria Soresina renews its corporate identity

One of the most important companies in the Italian dairy sector and global leading producer of Grana Padano, Latteria Soresina announces an important corporate identity restyling project that regards packaging, website, social media and mass media. ECO-DESIGN: IL BANDO DI Un premio in crescita e aperto da quest’anno a tutti gli operatori della filiera

del pack con in più un mix di partner autorevoli: questo è il Bando CONAI 2021. Ne abbiamo parlato con Simona Fontana, responsabile del Centro Studi del Consorzio che ripercorre le tappe di un’iniziativa che, partita come indagine, è diventata uno strumento di supporto e promozione per le imprese che sanno coniugare sensibilità ambientale con fattibilità economica.

l Bando CONAI ha una storia così lunga che neppure la pandemia è riuscita a fermare: non è un caso che l’edizione 2021 confermi la tendenza positiva in termini di adesioni, con un incremento del 10% dei casi candidati e del numero di aziende coinvolte (156), protagoniste di un’iniziativa che ancora una volta si rinnova.

«Il 2021 segna un nuovo, importante cambio di paradigma, con aggiornamenti coerenti con l’evoluzione normativa, tecnica e di sistema» spiega Simona Fontana, responsabile del Centro Studi CONAI. «La principale novità riguarda il fatto che possono essere candidati anche imballaggi assoggettati al contributo di altri sistemi EPR, seppure senza alcun riconoscimento di natura economica.

riale, a patto però che assicurino un miglioramento in termini di riutilizzo e riciclabilità».

Trova comunque conferma un punto di forza del Bando, ovvero la valutazione di come possa essere migliorato un packaging. Sono ammessi quindi i casi che portano a facilitare l’attività di riciclo, con un indicatore LCA positivo tra quelli considerati (in termini di emissioni di CO2, consumo di energia e di acqua) da sommare a un risultato positivo in termini di materia prima seconda generata.

Nel complesso si tratta di un approccio sviluppato in anni di lavoro, che è in grado di definire con accuratezza e affidabilità gli esempi meritevoli di ricevere i 500mila euro di incentivi economici messi a disposizione.

Un rigore che non è passato inosservato e che è testimoniato anche dalla qualità di una giuria multi-composita.

«I packaging candidati vengono infatti dapprima analizzati e valutati attraverso un’analisi LCA semplificata e poi solo quelli che generano benefici ambientali complessivi vengono valutati in funzione delle leve di ecodesign attivate da un Comitato Tecnico composto da referenti CONAI e di Consorzi di filiera, mentre i 5 premi speciali per l’economia circolare sono scelti dal Comitato Tecnico allargato: un panel composto, oltre che da sostenitori di lungo corso come Altroconsumo e la rivista ItaliaImballaggio (Pack-Media), dai rappresentanti di Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, Università IUAV di Venezia, Università di Bologna e Legambiente. E proprio quest’ultima,

] «Si trattava, in origine - ricorda Fontana - di una raccolta su base triennale di buone pratiche, di esperienze virtuose sul tema della prevenzione degli imballaggi, che non metteva al centro il design, ma si limitava a misurarne in termini percentuali il risparmio di risorse. In altri termini, una fotografia dello stato dell’arte del mercato e della tecnologia».

Nel 2010, il modello evolve, introducendo parametri di misurazione più puntuali: è il tempo della valutazione dell’impatto ambientale degli imballaggi attraverso l’analisi LCA, che meglio rispondeva ai cambiamenti normativi e alla crescente sensibilità dei consumatori. E dunque, si inizia già allora a parlare di eco-design.

In principio fu il Dossier Prevenzione…

Il Bando CONAI che conosciamo oggi è il portato delle numerose esperienze collezionate a partire dal primo Dossier Prevenzione del 2001.

«Non avendo a disposizione fino a quel momento una griglia di valutazione scientificamente definita - sottolinea la responsabile - abbiamo guardato alla LCA, introducendo per la prima volta una metodica scientifica con cui misurare gli effetti delle azioni di prevenzione sugli imballaggi in termini di emissioni di CO2, consumi energetici e consumi idrici. È stato un passo importante, una vera novità per l’epoca, quando di LCA si parlava solo in ambienti specializzati. Introdurre questo sistema di valutazione è stata un’intuizione di CONAI, con

And again for the first time, we have provided for the possibility of accepting cases with a change of material,

provided, however, that they ensure an improvement in terms of reuse and recyclability».

However, one of the strengths of the call for proposals has been confirmed, namely the evaluation of how packaging can be improved. Therefore, cases that facilitate recycling are admitted, with a positive LCA indicator among those considered (in terms of CO 2 emissions, energy and water consumption) to be added to a positive result in terms of second raw material generated.

On the whole, this is an approach developed over years of toil, which is able to accurately and reliably define the entries worthy of receiving the 500,000 euros of economic incentives made available.

A rigor that has not gone unnoticed and is also highlighted by the quality of a multi-composite jury.

«The packaging entered is, in fact,

E poi il Bando diventa realtà. CONAI prosegue sulla strada dell’innovazione, convinto che le aziende debbano essere incentivate e valorizzate in questo percorso.

«Il 2013 segna un ulteriore punto di svolta; è l’anno, infatti, della prima edizione del Bando Conai, che premia le azioni di miglioramento messe in campo dai produttori e dagli utilizzatori di imballaggi consorziati, in regola con la dichiarazione e il versamento del contributo ambientale (CAC).

Superando la logica della “semplice” prevenzione, si passa a guardare all’imballaggio come protagonista dell’economia circolare. Al centro ci sono i packaging immessi al consumo in Italia, sviluppati sulla base di una progettazione coe-

Due sono le opzioni da valutare: rivedere l’attuale quadro normativo (con il Regolamento (CE) 1935/2004 come pietra angolare) o creare un nuovo quadro normativo per sostituire la normativa vigente.

La commissione propone che il regolamento debba: • spostare l’attenzione sull’articolo finale a contatto con gli alimenti piuttosto che sulle sostanze di partenza; • includere un sistema a tre livelli per dare la priorità alle sostanze chimiche più pericolose utilizzate nei FCM (Food Contact Material); • utilizzare una valutazione generica per le sostanze di primo livello; • incorporare nella valutazione i criteri di “uso essenziale”; • sviluppare un approccio per supportare e guidare gli operatori del settore nella loro valutazione di sostanze più benigne (livello tre); • semplificare e consolidare il sistema sanzionatorio con regole chiare e coerenti su quali siano le richieste di dati e il trasferimento di informazioni lungo la filiera.

Regulatory framework: revision or replacement?

As part of its ongoing review and revision of European Union (EU) food contact material (FCM) legislation, the European Commission held a public consultation on its Inception Impact Assessment (IIA) road map.

Two options are to be evaluated – either revise the current regulatory framework (with Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 as the cornerstone) or create a new regulatory framework to replace the current regulation.

The commission proposes that the regulation should: • shift the focus onto the final food contact article rather than the starting substances; • include a three-tier system to prioritize the most hazardous chemicals used in FCMs;

• use a generic assessment for tier one substances; • incorporate “essential use” criteria into the assessment; • develop an approach to support and guide business operators in their assessment of more benign (tier three) substances; • streamline and consolidate enforcement with clear and consistent rules on data requirements and information transfer throughout the supply chain.

New measures for non-harmonized materials The European Printing Ink Manufacturers’ trade association (EuPIA) and the Packaging Ink Joint Industry Task Force (PIJITF) are among 300 other organizations that provided

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has expanded its genotoxicity and carcinogenicity database to include an additional 211 chemicals.

Previously, the database contained only chemicals with positive results in the bacterial reverse mutation assay (also known as the Ames test), which is widely used to assess in vitro mutagenicity.

The added chemicals have negative results in these tests. In addition to the Ames results, the data also include results of complementary genotoxicity and carcinogenicity tests, where available.

Evaluation of genotoxicity is usually required for safety assessment of chemicals under EU legislation, including substances which migrate from food contact materials.

Punta di diamante della R-Series è il modello R700, un sistema intermittente che assicura cambi formato velocissimi e massimo controllo dello stretch, raggiungendo velocità di produzione di 120 pillow bags al minuto, 70 square bottom bags e 70 steelo bags (fondo quadro con 4 saldature laterali) al minuto.

A livello costruttivo, R700 si distingue per alcune scelte inedite che hanno consentito di ridurne al minimo le dimensioni: la macchina occupa infatti soltanto 1,42 mq, adattandosi quindi agli spazi più piccoli.

Una delle principali innovazioni riguarda l’albero portabobina motorizzato, posizionato a 90° invece che nella classica collocazione posteriore. Il funzionamento della macchina è altrettanto innovativo. Prevede, infatti, il movimento continuo dell’albero porta-bobina motorizzato e il movimento alternato del gruppo traino film e saldatura.

Un ballerino compensatore elettronico trasforma il moto continuo del film in arrivo dalla bobina in moto alternato verso i gruppi di saldatura. Questo principio consente di evitare l’installazione del freno bobina meccanico, garantendo una dinamica molto fluida e affidando al software la gestione programmabile della tensione del film.

Come diretta conseguenza, l’energia inerziale non viene trasferita al film, ed è quindi possibile aumentarne l’accelerazione e/o il tempo di saldatura a tutto vantaggio della produttività, assicurando al contempo la massima qualità e resa estetica della confezione.

MINIMUM FOOTPRINT, FAST FORMAT CHANGES, STRETCH CONTROL The spearhead of the R-Series is the R700 model, an intermittent system that ensures extremely fast format changes and maximum stretch control, reaching production speeds of 120 pillow bags per minute, 70 square bottom bags and 70 steelo bags (square bottom with 4 side seals) per minute.

In terms of construction, the R700

stands out for a number of new choices that have made it possible to reduce its dimensions to a minimum: in fact, the machine occupies only 1.42 sq. m., thus adapting to the smallest spaces.

One of the main innovations concerns the motorized reel stand shaft, positioned at 90° instead of the classic rear position. FROM CONTINUOUS TO ALTERNATING MOTION

The operation of the machine is just as innovative. In fact, it provides for the continuous movement of the motorized reel-holder shaft and the alternate movement of the film and sealing drive unit.

An electronic compensating dancer transforms the continuous motion of the film arriving from the reel into alternating motion towards the sealing units. This principle makes it possible to avoid the installation of a mechanical reel brake, guaranteeing very smooth dynamics and entrusting the software with the programmable management of film tension.

As a direct consequence, inertial energy is not transferred to the film, and it is therefore possible to increase its acceleration and/or sealing time to the benefit of productivity, while ensuring maximum quality and aesthetic performance of the pack.

Strawberries tracked through QR and RFID combination

Belgian fresh fruit and vegetable auctioneers Coöperatie Hoogstraten has worked with RFID technology supplier Aucxis to provide visibility and to track the movements of its strawberries throughout the supply chain.

The company chose a hybrid system using QR codes to identify every punnet and link it to a specific grower, and RFID tags to monitor the pallet on which cardboard boxes are stacked and transported. The pallets are tagged with passive UHF RFID for automated data capture about the product as it travels to auction sites, stores and consumers.

The pallet tag is read by Impinj readers mounted on forklifts, while the QR codes are scanned using cameras in ‘vision tunnels’, provided by VistaLink, according to Lauran D’hanis, Aucxis’s account manager. Aucxis’s Hertz middleware captures all data and each RFID tag’s ID number. It then manages the data, linking the pallet’s unique ID with the punnet ID. This information is forwarded to Coöperatie Hoogstraten’s enterprise resource planning software.

The solution was launched in conjunction with the company’s transition from plastic to sustainable cardboard punnets, in cooperation with the cardboard and machinery supplier, Smurfit Kappa, which constructed a system to enable

solo Dolce, storico produttore veneto di biscotti di qualità artigianale - Cantuccini, Amaretti …. - da molti anni confeziona i propri prodotti in flowpack per mantenerli a lungo freschi e croccanti. Fino a poco tempo fa, i packaging flessibili venivano poi imballati in scatole pre-incollate: un processo costoso e laborioso, non più sostenibile a fronte di una domanda in sensibile crescita e del conseguente aumento dei ritmi produttivi.

Per rendere più efficiente e moderno il processo di confezionamento l’azienda si è affidata al costruttore tedesco Gerhard Schubert, che non solo ha fornito un impianto TLM modulare robotizzato studiato ad hoc e con cambio formato semplificato, ma ha anche riprogettato il design delle scatole, così da rendere più flessibile ed economico l’intero processo.

La scelta del top loading. I biscotti prodotti con procedimenti tradizionali semi-

artigianali hanno una forma irregolare che rende diversa la shape di ogni sacchetto riempito, sollevando criticità nelle operazioni di confezionamento automatico. Il team Schubert ha quindi progettato due formati di scatole, realizzate da fustelle pretagliate piatte, con due altezze diverse, che possono essere riempite con sacchetti da 150, 200 o 250 grammi

Robotized packaging for traditional biscuits In order to package the semi-homemade biscuits of the Italian company Asolo Dolce, Gerhard Schubert has developed a TLM robotized system, also optimizing the secondary pack. The goal was achieved: a more efficient, flexible and faster packaging process to meet the new production requirements.

Asolo Dolce, a Veneto based traditional manufacturer of confectionery products - Cantuccini, Amaretti and other traditional specialties - for its packaging has favoured for may years flowpacks to keep them fresh and crunchy for a long time. Until recently, however, the treats were packaged in pre-glued cartons – an expensive and labor-intensive process that Asolo Dolce wanted to

optimise due to increasing demand.

For an efficient modernisation of its packaging and process, the company turned to Schubert, which not only supplied a modular robotized TLM plant designed ad hoc and with simplified format changeover, but also redesigned the design of the boxes, so as to make the entire process more flexible and economical.

La nuova linea di confezionamento

The choice of top loading. Biscuits produced with traditional semi-artisanal processes have an irregular shape, that gives each filled bag its own geometry.

This characteristic presents a challenge for automated handling as part of the packaging process. Schubert team designed two carton formats as flat blanks and with two different heights in order to fill the cartons flexibly with bags weighing 150, 200 or 250 grams – all on a single machine.

To save Asolo Dolce time and money over the long term, the Schubert machine experts working with Area Sales Manager Dirk Andrich opted for the top-loading process, which is done through the top opening, the largest available, instead of the more common side loading.

In this way, the system not only works

more quickly, but also more flexibly and reliably, because the robots responsible for the filling process can act independently of the height of the cartons.

The new packaging machine is responsible for automatic bag grouping, erecting and gluing the flat blanks, filling the cartons with Cantuccini flowpacks and then closing the filled cartons. The full output of 75 cartons per minute is always guaranteed, regardless of the format. During the final approval process, the tests conducted under production conditions demonstrated an efficiency level of at least 98 per cent.

Transmodul transport robots. One of the technical highlights of the modern line is the Transmodul. The transport robot – an in-house Schubert development – seamlessly links the

individual steps in the machine’s packaging process. The machine erects the flat blanks and places them onto the Transmodul, which brings the prepared cartons to the filling station.

As soon as the grouped bags with the biscuits and the cartons are aligned, the robot places the flowpacks into the packages. The Transmodul then moves the cartons to the closing station.

Flexible format change. In the event of a format changeover, only the magazine plate for the carton blanks needs to be changed, as the packaging machine’s filling tool is equipped with specially adapted suction cups. It automatically adjusts to the new pouch format via a spreading motion. This makes the changeover very quick and easy for the machine operator – and production can proceed quickly.

And in the future, further formats will be possible with the new packaging machine as well.

Thanks to its increased efficiency, cost savings, reliability and ease of use, the Schubert solution has resulted in a high level of satisfaction at Asolo Dolce.

In order to integrate the more efficient packaging of the Cantuccini into the entire production process, the Schubert experts also took into account a uniform logistics concept that extends all the way through to the palletization.

Schubert raggruppa in automatico i sacchetti, forma e incolla i pretagliati piatti, riempie le scatole con i sacchetti di biscotti e, successivamente, chiude le scatole piene.

A prescindere dal formato, viene sempre garantito il ritmo molto elevato di 75 scatole al minuto. Il collaudo in condizioni di produzione ha dimostrato un grado di rendimento di almeno il 98%.

Robot trasportatore Transmodul. Un particolare tecnico rilevante dell’impianto è il robot trasportatore Transmodul, sviluppato da Schubert, che collega fra loro tutte le fasi del processo di confezionamento, senza interfacce.

La macchina forma i pretagliati piatti e li deposita sul Transmodul, che li trasporta alla stazione di riempimento. Appena i sacchetti di biscotti raggruppati e le scatole si trovano alla stessa altezza, il robot inserisce i sacchetti nelle confezioni.

Infine, il Transmodul porta le scatole alla stazione di chiusura.

Cambio formato flessibile. Per eseguire il cambio formato è sufficiente sostituire la piastra del magazzino fustelle.

L’utensile di riempimento della macchina confezionatrice, infatti, è dotato di ventose speciali che possono essere divaricate per adattarsi automaticamente al nuovo formato di sacchetto.

Il cambio è veloce e facile da eseguire, e la produzione può proseguire in modo celere. Grazie alla nuova macchina confezionatrice, in futuro, si potranno quindi realizzare altri formati, senza impatti sul processo produttivo.

La soluzione Schubert ha pienamente soddisfatto il cliente, nel rispetto dei requisiti richiesti in termini di efficienza, risparmio economico, affidabilità e semplicità di utilizzo. Inoltre, per integrare in modo ottimizzato il confezionamento dei Cantuccini nell’intero processo produttivo, il team Schubert sta studiando un nuovo concept per uniformare la logistica ai criteri adottati, da estendere fino alla palettizzazione.

The packaging is made of recyclable paper with a transparent plastic-free window created using NoW™ - No waste technology, a new process that makes laminated papers 100% recyclable and sustainable.

In recognition of its high level of sustainability, the packaging has been awarded Aticelca Level A certification, which means it can be recycled together with paper with less than 10% waste. It is also resealable, ensuring longer lasting product freshness.

The Italian beer brand Birra Peroni, part of the Japanese Asahi Group, is now using EY OpsChain Traceability on the public Ethereum blockchain for supply chain traceability. The solution mints nonfungible tokens (NFTs), providing a unique, digital certificate of ownership for each batch of beer.

Inoltre, tiene in considerazione l’abbinamento di eventuali prodotti complementari (parmigiano + pasta ad esempio) per rendere ancora più interessante le offerte applicate.

Infine, un codice a barre presente su ciascuna referenza consente di acquisire dati per monitorare il tasso di vendita dei prodotti a cui è stata applicata la scontistica, aggiungere promozioni o fornire informazioni aggiuntive per i consumatori che acquistano in modo sostenibile.

In the food sector, blockchain traceability is being leveraged by three distinct groups. Firstly high value items such as seafood and meat. Then items which carry food safety concerns, such as lettuce, which is prone to E.coli contamination. Now it is gaining traction in a third category, upmarket brands such as Birra Peroni.

EY OpsChain Traceability is designed to address lengthy supply chains and integrate with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems via APIs. The consultants have also requested an update to Ethereum to track the physical location of assets more easily.

Prevent food waste thanks to a dynamic algorithm

To reduce food waste in the in the GDO channel the Israeli start-up company Wasteless - supported by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) - has developed a smart algorithm that allows the application of dynamic pricing markdowns based on expiry dates.

The algorithm knows all the products on the shelves, including their expiry date and can predict whether or not it is likely that the product will get sold. Using

The label will be used by companies who analyze their herds and milk batches with the rapid DNA tests from the company. These are rapid, on-site DNA tests for A2 cows and A2 milk available to both farmers and dairy processors. The new optimally designed magnetic structure design and dedicated parts help to drastically reduce losses, ensuring high efficiency.

By reducing losses, the motor generates less heat and vibration, ensuring the device’s increased reliability.

This allowed the cooling fan to be removed from the 60W models, solving the problem of dust lifting.

The sealing of the motor, gearbox and terminal box has also been improved, allowing IP66 protection to be achieved, while the new stronger and more efficient gearboxes allow for higher radial and axial torques and loads, up to twice those of previous models.
