Lo slogan “costruttori di dolcezze” e una colorata cazzuola, accompagnano la popolare manifestazione perugina Eurochocolat 2006. Il divertente “packaging-oggetto”, disegnato da Giulio Iacchetti e prodotto in varie tonalità a seconda del tipo di cioccolata, rimanda in modo giocoso alla dimensione del costruire e del fare.

dell’esclusivo, o anche semplicemente del “piacevolmente inatteso” che sono sinonimi del delizioso. Occorre però, saper scegliere e, per farlo, recuperare l’uso di quei sensi semi-anestetizzati quali olfatto, gusto, tatto, che completano la vita e non la riducono ad una schiavitù da immagini sgargianti e chiassose quanto insapori, inodori e intangibili. Questo numero è dunque dedicato a un nuovo sentire, di cui il diaframma tanto importante del packaging può farsi latore e messaggero quanto mai prezioso: specialmente in settori come quello dell’enologia, della gastronomia e del food in generale. Lo dimostrano le particolari bottiglie e le innovative etichette di alcuni vini prestigiosi; o la sempre più diffusa tendenza ad associare ai prodotti di bellezza rossetti, creme e quant’altro elementi, anzi ingredienti, “golosi” e saporiti per far confluire due piaceri in uno solo; o l’abilità della designer Daliah Giacoma Sottile nel recuperare il gusto della calligrafia per ornare il packaging di un alimento biologico; o ancora, l’accurata selezione delle più particolari specialità europee (non solo gastronomiche) ad opera di un trendissimo negozio berlinese; o le tante interpretazioni per esprimere “qualcosa di dolce” trascritte sulla carta che avvolge le 120 zollette di zucchero proposte dai COMA; o infine, la maestria di un artista eclettico come Leonardo Pivi nel trasformare l’icona di un famoso cioccolatino in un piccolo, delizioso mosaico.

Come ci si può difendere dall’assedio della seduzione consumista, in quell’enorme centro commerciale saturo di iperscelte in cui taluni vorrebbero trasformare il mondo?

Forse si può, paradossalmente, facendo il nostro dovere di consumatori il meglio possibile.

Il meglio possibile vorrebbe dire con scienza e coscienza, sforzandoci di operare scelte sensate, ma anche imprevedibili. Già, perché solo con qualche inattesa bizzarria possiamo sperare di dare un po’ di filo da torcere ai vari marketing manager, per sfuggire alle affilatissime grinfie dei loro sistemi di “fidelizzazione del consumatore”, di “targhettizzazione del mercato” e compagnia bella.

Ora, la delizia è una di queste sane follie. In un mondo dove anche lo svago deve venire finalizzato a qualcosa, e persino il benessere diventa più che altro un modo per abbattere i costi sociali, la delizia fine a se stessa è perfettamente inutile, e ciò che è rivestito dal suo lieve tocco rischia di apparire una minaccia allo status quo che vuole governare sia il modo in cui ci divertiamo quanto i nostri gusti, di qualunque genere essi siano. Se l’idea medievale del “giardino delle delizie”, come luogo di piaceri proibiti, conteneva l’utopia di una radicale sovversione sociale tuttavia l’idea di poter recuperare, anche nei prodotti offerti dal mercato odierno, un po’ di quell’antico “piacere” è tutt’altro che priva di senso. Vi sono merci, prodotti, persino opere d’arte che recuperano proprio questa passione del raffinato,

How can we defend ourselves from the bombardment of tantalising goods in that enormous shopping mall crammed with millions of products into which some people would like to see the world transformed?

Perhaps we can do it paradoxically by performing our duty as consumers to the best of our abilities.

To the best of our abilities means being scientific and conscientious, forcing ourselves to make sensible, but mercurial, choices. Yes, because it is only by acting with a measure of unpredictable eccentricity that we can hope to give various marketing managers a run for their money in order to escape from the fiendish clutches of their systems of “consumer loyalty”, “market targeting” and so on.

Now delight is one of these lunacies.

In a world where even leisure time has to have some purpose and wellbeing is principally a way of lowering social costs, delight as an end in itself is perfectly futile and anything that faintly smacks of it risks being seen as a threat to the status quo that desires to govern both the way in which we amuse ourselves and our tastes, whatever their nature may be. While the medieval idea of the “garden of delights”, a place of illicit pleasures, contained the utopia of a radical overthrow of society - the idea of being able to find a small measure of that ancient pleasure in products offered by today’s market is not at all silly. There are consumer

goods, products and even works of art which revive this passion for sophistication, exclusivity or even simply the “pleasure of the unexpected” which is synonymous with delight. It is necessary however to know how to choose and in order to do that we must reactivate those semi- anaesthetised senses such as smell, taste, touch which make life more complete and not merely a slave to lurid and brash images which are tasteless, odourless and intangible. This issue is therefore dedicated to a new way of perceiving in which the all important film of packaging may become a most precious bearer and messenger, especially in sectors such as wines, gastronomy and food in general. This is seen in the unusual bottles and innovative labels of some prestigious wines or the increasingly widespread trend of associating beauty products - lipsticks, creams and so on - with gluttonously “yummy”, tasty ingredients, doubling the pleasure. Or the skill of designer Daliah Giacoma Sottile in reviving the art of calligraphy in order to decorate the packaging of organic foods or an extremely trendy Berlin store’s careful selection of the most unusual (not just gastronomic) European specialities or the many ways to describe “something sweet” printed on the paper wrapping of COMA’s 120 sugar cubes or the mastery of an eclectic artist of the likes of Leonardo Pivi in transforming the icon of a famous chocolate into a small, delicious mosaic.

Qualità e accuratezza sono le principali caratteristiche dei prodotti realizzati da Daliah Giacoma Sottile, graphic designer d’origini svizzere, fondatrice e anima dello studio, passata con bravura e disinvoltura dalla fotografia alla calligrafia, fino ad approdare alla grafica e alla comunicazione, in tutte le loro forme.

Nello Studio Knecht Sottile si lavora appassionatamente sia in ambito editoriale - libri, monografie, manualistica tecnica, cataloghi, brochure dal taglio fotografico e artistico - sia a progetti d’immagine coordinata, modulistica aziendale, merchandising, segnaletica, tanto che alcuni lavori sono stati pubblicati nel libro Logomania, Italian Signs (Red Publishing, 2006).

Una specialità dello Studio Knecht Sottile sono gli RSVP, inviti a mostre e sfilate a tiratura limitata (massimo 500 esemplari perché i costi sono molto elevati), studiati ed elaborati tra artigianalità e tipografia, in cui ogni particolare viene curato attentamente, come, ad esempio, lo scrivere gli indirizzi a mano in calligrafia espressiva (tra i più riusciti, quello per Stonefly SpA). Lo studio organizza anche, in location atipiche, eventi collegati ai progetti realizzati in cui tutto viene seguito e coordinato nei minimi dettagli, dal cibo alla musica.

E infine il packaging, indispensabile corollario all’immagine del prodotto, ideato e realizzato da Daliah Sottile come un vestito sartoriale, che deve valorizzare la merce senza mai renderla volgare. Così anche per i prodotti biologici, spesso lasciati in balia di confezioni dalla semplicità un po’ troppo rustica, la designer ha saputo trovare il giusto compromesso tra etica ed estetica.

Qual è la tua poetica, il tuo modo di elaborare progetti e condurre i lavori?

Amo lavorare con i clienti con cui mi sento affine a livello sia umano che intellettuale. I miei clienti ideali sono coloro che si fidano totalmente del mio operato. Quando li sento a loro agio nel collaborare con me è una sensazione appagante. L’elaborazione del progetto nasce proprio dall’analisi dei loro comportamenti, dalla loro fisicità e stile. Lavoro seguendo personalmente ogni dettaglio, dopo aver strutturato il progetto scelgo le collaborazioni esterne, fotografo, copy, ecc. e infine seguo tutto il coordinamento dei fornitori e il controllo qualità.

A quali progetti state lavorando attualmente?

In questo periodo stiamo preparando una monografia per Itama, un’azienda che produce lampade “made in Italy”. È uno tra i progetti più interessanti che stiamo realizzando, l’idea di base del concept non è legata solo al design, ma alla luce quale fattore di suggestione per creare ambientazioni uniche.

Alla monografia si aggiungerà anche tutto lo studio della strategia di comunicazione per la vendita in Italia e l’estero. Stiamo poi lavorando al libro fotografico di Federica Bottoli dedicato alla tribù dei Boscimani; impaginiamo una storia di vita reale in cui si parla di generazioni a confronto e di etnie, inoltre seguiremo la scelta della casa editoriale per una migliore distribuzione e realizzeremo l’evento inaugurale correlato. Infine, abbiamo realizzato un libro di grafica legato alla calligrafia in occasione della fiera di Francoforte a ottobre, il cui coordinamento ha incluso, tra l’altro, il contatto con oltre 20 calligrafi di fama mondiale che hanno collaborato per la pubblicazione con Red Publishing.

avere un appuntamento; così alla fine mi hanno contattata proponendomi uno stage da loro. È stata un’esperienza fondamentale per la mia scelta professionale odierna.

Come e quanto ha inciso sul tuo lavoro di designer l'esperienza di calligrafa a contatto, tra l'altro, con i più importanti maestri?

Ho iniziato per pura curiosità, ero affascinata dallo scrivere con il pennino e l’inchiostro, come gli amanuensi; ho partecipato a molti corsi di scrittura formale, tenuti da maestri come Brody Neueshwander, Thomas Ingmire, Larry Brady e Paul Shaw, ma l’esperienza fondamentale è stato l’incontro con Jill Carson: ho seguito il suo corso di calligrafia espressiva durante il quale ho imparato ad ascoltare l’ispirazione che viene dal cuore attraverso la musica e le emozioni.

Nei miei lavori, una delle mie caratteristiche stilistiche consiste proprio nello studio e nella scelta del lettering; dedico moltissimo tempo alla definizione di una font, ne studio la leggibilità, l’impatto visivo; spesso elaboro titoli o frasi in calligrafia che contraddistinguono il mio stile.

Qual è il tuo rapporto con il packaging in genere e con il food packaging in particolare?

Ho un rapporto di affetto quotidiano con il packaging. Osservo attentamente tutto ciò che mi circonda e amo studiare le confezioni in commercio; se ne trovo di originali, le compro. Prediligo i packaging realizzati semplicemente, con materiali comuni e mi piace sperimentare nuove forme di imballaggio, utilizzare etichette e bindelli, spago, cera lacca. Il tutto con un taglio grafico d’impatto.

Quali confezioni per alimenti ti colpiscono di più e perché?

Mi colpiscono tutti quegli imballaggi che hanno un aspetto pulito e che utilizzano materiali poveri, come carta usomano, carta paglia, carta velina, ma che denotano una preziosità intrinseca: mi deve venire voglia di assaggiare il prodotto e di solito questo non accade con le confezioni dall’aspetto commerciale. L’idea che facciano venire appetito, stimola in me anche la voglia di progettarne altri.

Come dovrebbe essere un buon progetto di food packaging?

La semplicità, questo per me è l’ingrediente per un buon progetto di packaging. Il mercato è saturo di vesti complesse e super colorate e il mio desiderio è quello di imprimere un concetto di semplicità e qualità.

Ad esempio, adoro tutti i packaging realizzati per Ecor dall’agenzia Metalli Lindberg, e amo anche il packaging premiato per la Goppion Caffè Nativo, studiato da Bianchi & Kerrigan. Al contrario, non mi piacciono i packaging studiati in modo superficiale, quelli che non rimangono impressi né per il marchio né per il contenuto. A proposito di questo devo aggiungere che per me è molto importante capire se l’azienda che ho davanti lavora in modo serio e affidabile, se utilizza ingredienti sani e certificati: solo così sono stimolata a studiare qualcosa di speciale e che sprigioni salute.

Parliamo del lavoro per A`nanda Ka`nan…

L’erboristeria A’nanda Ka’nan è un negozio storico di Treviso, la prima erboristeria aperta nel 1972 dalla famiglia Bisetto. È forse la più bella realtà erboristica che abbia mai visto in tutta Italia e sia l’ambito erboristico che quello dedicato all’alimentazione naturale sono di qualità eccellente.

Il mio rapporto con A’nada Ka’nan si è sviluppato con estrema facilità; dopo anni che seguivo lo studio dell’immagine coordinata, un anno fa è maturato il desiderio di confezionare a proprio marchio una serie di prodotti, i più venduti, per abbattere i costi del biologico che solitamente risulta più caro.

Per realizzare i loro packaging ho utilizzato materiali di uso quotidiano, ad esempio per il pane ho usato sacchetti di carta rigorosamente bianchi. Per gli altri prodotti da forno ho usato colori caldi, dall’arancio al marrone; per la pasticceria le tonalità dal marrone al rosso, inoltre per i dolci freschi ho realizzato le confezioni in cellophane e sull’etichetta ho riproposto, a grandi caratteri, come i vecchi alfabeti per bambini, le lettere iniziali che compongono le parole degli ingredienti: K come kamut, F come farro etc. a indicare quali farine sono state utilizzate per realizzarli. Infine, per i testi ho studiato attentamente il lettering e la sua spaziatura, il tutto sempre all’insegna della semplicità unita alla forza comunicativa. Per caratterizzare le confezioni, spesso utilizzo i timbri, sono personalizzabili con la propria calligrafia e

possiedono quel gusto un po’ retrò e quell’aspetto di manualità e leggera imperfezione che desta molta suggestione in chi li vede.

Quali altri lavori di packaging avete realizzato?

Ho realizzato la scatola contenente tutto il kit di accessori e manualistica per Fazioli Pianoforti, le confezioni degli integratori alimentari bio per Akappa e il pacchetto software per Action Plan.

Altri progetti sono quasi conclusi e presto si aggiungeranno alla lista.

Se ti venisse chiesto di impacchettare delle prelibatezze (cibo, dolci, frutta) come immagineresti questo “packaging delle delizie”?

In questo periodo avrei voglia di confezionare 1 kg di mele. Le avvolgerei, una ad una, in carta da giornale, un quotidiano qualsiasi ma dal quale selezionerei solo le pagine dedicate alla cultura, all’arte e alle mostre. Poi le metterei, ben avvolte e chiuse solo con la pressione della mano, in un cesto di palma o di cartone riciclato e chiuderei il tutto con un giro di rafia rossa in modo da poter trasportare comodamente il contenitore a mano, come una shopping bag.

Un altro packaging che immagino per il cibo è una veste monocromatica, tutta rossa o verde o gialla o bianca (dipende dal contenuto) con la scritta in calligrafia “fusilli”, “orecchiette”, “latte”, “yogurt” ecc. a cui allegherei i cartellini con le ricette storiche e le informazioni culturali.

Sonia Pedrazzini Quality and painstaking precision are the main features of the products made by Daliah Giacoma Sottile, graphic designer of Swiss origin, founder and animator of the studio, who with consummate ability has gone from photography to calligraphy, to end up in graphics and communication in all their forms. Studio Knecht Sottile works both passionately in the field of publishing – books, monographs, technical manuals, catalogues, brochures with a photographic and artistic slant – as well as in coordinated image projects, company material, merchandising, signs, in fact some of their works have been published in the book Logomania, Italian Signs (Red Publishing, 2006).

One of the specialties of the Knecht Sottile Studio are their RSVPs, limited run invitations to exhibitions and fashion shows (a maximum of 500 items because costs are very high), devised in a manner midway between craft and typography, paying painstaking care to details, as in the case for example the handwritten addresses in expressive calligraphy (among the most successful those for Stonefly SpA). The studio also organizes events related to the projects in atypical locations where everything is seen to and coordinated down to the finest detail, from food to music. And lastly the packaging, indispensable corollary to the

product image, designed and created by Daliah Sottile like a tailored garment, that has to valorize the goods without making them vulgar. The same also goes for biological products, often left at the mercy of packs of a simplicity that is a little too homespun, Daliah Sottile having found the right compromise between ethics and aesthetics.

What is your poetics, your way of devising projects and carrying out your work?

I love working with clients where I feel there is an affinity both at a human and an intellectual level.

My ideal clients are those that place full trust in what I do. It is great to feel they are at their ease in working with me.

The project is devised from an analysis of their behaviour, of their physical nature and style.

I work seeing to every detail personally; after having structured the project I choose the external people, the photographer, the copywriter, etc. and lastly I follow the entire coordination of the suppliers and the quality control.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

In this period we are preparing a monograph for Itama, a company that produces Italian style lamps. It is one of the most interesting projects we are involved with, the basic idea of the concept is not only associated with design, but with light as a factor of beauty for creating unique settings.

On top of the monograph one also has the entire study of the communication sales strategies for Italy and abroad. We are also working on Federica Bottoli’s book on the Bushmen; we are paging a real life featuring a comparison of generations and ethnic groups; as well as that we are helping the publisher in its plan to improve distribution and we will be organising the inauguration event. Lastly, we have produced a graphics book on calligraphy to be presented at the Frankfurt fair in October, the coordination of which also included contact with 20

calligraphers of world fame that have worked on the publication with Red Publishing.

For a given period you worked with the London agency Pentagram. Can you tell us about it?

I started out by sending e-mails with my curriculum and portfolios, but got no answers; then one day I just decided to get up and go, I rented out a room along with other people and then I just turned up at Pentagram to get an interview; in the end they contacted me offering me a stage with them.

It was a fundamental experience for my current professional choice.

How and how much has your experience as a calligrapher in contact among other things with the most important masters affected your work as a designer?

I started off out of sheer curiosity, I was fascinated by writing with pen and ink, like the scribes; I attended many formal writing, held by masters like Brody Neueshwander, Thomas Ingmire, Larry Brady and Paul Shaw, but the most important experience was my encountering Jill Carson: I attended her expressive calligraphy course during which I learned to listen to the inspiration that comes from the heart through music and emotions.

In my work, one of my stylistic characteristics consists in the study and the choice of lettering; I dedicate a lot of time to the definition of a font, I study its legibility, its visual impact; I often devise titles or sentences in calligraphy that marks my style.

What is your relationship with packaging in general and food packaging in particular?

I have a day-to-day affective relationship with packaging. I carefully observe everything that surrounds me and I love studying the packs on the market; If I find original ones I buy them. I prefer packaging that is made simply, with basic materials and I like experimenting with new forms of

packaging. Using labels and bindings, string, sealing wax, all with a striking approach to graphics.

What food packaging strikes you the most and why?

I am struck by all packaging that has a clean appearance and that uses humble materials, such as moldmade paper, straw or tissue paper, but that denotes intrinsic preciousness: I have to want to taste the product and this doesn’t normally occur with the packs that have a commercial appearance. The idea that they give you an appetite stimulates the desire in me to design yet more packs.

What should a good food packaging product be like?

Simplicity is for me the ingredient for a good packaging project. The market is saturated with complex and hyper colored claddings and my desire is to impress a concept of simplicity and quality. For example, I adore the packaging made for Ecor by the agency Metalli Lindberg and I also love the prizewinning packaging for Goppion Caffè Nativo, designed by Bianchi & Kerrigan. Against this I don’t like superficially designed packaging, items where neither the brand nor the contents leave an impression. On this count I have to add that it is very important for me that the company I am dealing with works in a serious and reliable manner, that they use healthy, certified ingredients, only then am I stimulated to devising something special that is just jumping with health.

Can we speak of your work for A`nanda Ka`nan…

The A’nanda Ka’nan is a historic herbalist shop of the town of Treviso, the first herbalist shop opened in 1972 by the Bisetto family. It is perhaps the finest herbalists I have ever seen throughout Italy, and both the herbalist field and the side dedicated to

natural food are of excellent quality. My relationship with A’nada Ka’nan developed extremely naturally with my having worked on their coordinated image for years. A year ago the concern decided it wanted to pack a series of products, the bestselling ones, under its own brand, this to lower the costs of biological foodstuffs that are usually more expensive. For their packaging I used materials of daily use, for example for bread I used paper that was strictly white. For the other bakery products I used warm colors from orange to brown; for patisserie products I applied shades from brown to red, while for fresh confectionary I used cellophane and had the initials that make up the words of the ingredients printed on the label in large letters, like the old children’s alphabets: K for kamut, B for buckwheat etc, to indicate the type of flour used to make them. Lastly, for the wording I made a careful study of the lettering and its spacing, all this while keeping everything simple, adding to the communicative strength.

To characterise the packs I often use stamps, that can be personalised with ones own handwritten calligraphy and that have that slightly old-fashioned air about them and that slightly imperfect handmade appeal.

What other packaging jobs have you done?

I made the box containing all the kit of accessories and manuals for Fazioli Pianoforti, the packs for the bio food integrators for Akappa and the Action Plan software pack.

Other projects are nearly finished and will soon be added to the list.

If you were asked to pack some delicacies (food, confectionery, fruit) how would you imagine this “packaging of delights”?

In this period I feel like packaging 1 kg of apples.

It would wrap them up one by one, in newspaper, any newspaper though from which I would only choose the culture, art and exhibition pages. Then I would put them, well wrapped and only closed by the pressure of the hand, in a palm leaf or recycled cardboard chest and close everything with a strip of red raffia so as to be able to conveniently carry the container around by hand, like a shopping bag.

Another packaging item that I imagine for food is a single color pack, all red or green or yellow or white (which depends on the contents) with “fusilli”, “milk”, “yoghurt” etc in handprint, to which I would attach tag pamphlets with traditional recipes and cultural information.

La mostra è ormai imminente: sotto la regia di Exposium, a Paris Nord Villepinte dal 20 al 24 novembre prossimi, si apriranno le porte del salone internazionale del packaging Emballage e di IPA, l’appuntamento di rilevanza mondiale dedicato al food processing.

Per l’edizione 2006, accanto a un ponderoso Osservatorio del mercato francese (che individua trend e ne anticipa i possibili sviluppi), gli organizzatori hanno commissionato anche una ricerca dal titolo esplicativo: “Evoluzioni e sfide del packaging nel nuovo contesto della distribuzione”. I temi del dossier verranno presentati all’apertura del Congresso Pack.Vision, ma saranno anche il filo conduttore del dibattito che avrà luogo tra gli studi di progettazione di calibro internazionale come Bergman & Associates, Carré Noir, CB’A Design Solutions, Desgrippes, Dragon Rouge, Landor, Iosmotik, Pulp, Robilant & Associati.

Anticipiamo i punti salienti della ricerca che, partendo dalle considerazioni sulle caratteristiche della distribuzione, dei suoi luoghi e delle sue modalità, arriva a tracciare un profilo ideale del packaging del domani.

Riflessioni sul consumo • Se, nel 2002, i “nuovi” prodotti erano 55.000, nel 2004 ne sono stati censiti ben 81.507 (e le cifre tengono conto solo di alimentari, in particolare bevande, e cosmetici). Va da sé dunque che la spinta alla differenziazione da un lato e la necessità di aumentare l’attrattiva dei prodotti vecchi o nuovi dall’altro siano sfide lanciate all’imballaggio.

• In merito alla distribuzione, questa deve fare i conti con nuove aspettative: oltre al bisogno di controllo sui prezzi e alle scelte più oculate, i consumatori vogliono amministrare meglio anche il proprio tempo, desiderano comprare in luoghi “a misura d’uomo”, più conviviali e, se

possibile, comodi da raggiungere.

Inoltre, dopo aver compreso i vantaggi dell’hard discount, vogliono poter trovare i prodotti in circuiti di massa, accessibili a più livelli. Insomma, I consumatori sembrano soffrire “dell’overdose” di proposte, e propendono per una selezione di prodotti più mirata, che meglio corrisponda ai loro gusti e al loro stile di vita.

• Diverso il discorso per i conceptstores e per la distribuzione dei prodotti di lusso, dove il consumatore vuole vivere un’esperienza indimenticabile, trattenendosi in luoghi che diventano “i nuovi teatri del consumo”.

• La distribuzione si dovrà adattare ad aspettative sempre più complesse e frammentate. Si profila una segmentazione di super e ipermercati in moduli differenziati, che corrispondono alle “tribù” e ai sottogruppi sociali: i supermetropolitani, i single, i piccoli nuclei familiari, quelli che sono sempre di fretta, i salutisti maniaci…

I codici dell’imballaggio • Poiché la necessità di contraddistinguersi è fondamentale, l’imballaggio che più attira l’attenzione risulta essere semplice, facilmente memorizzabile, realizzato con forme e colori basilari.

• Eppure il suo tradizionale ruolo di comunicatore sconfina ormai nella pubblicità tout court, diventando il mezzo con cui sedurre il consumatore, creando il legame con il marchio e spingendolo all’acquisto d’impulso.

Ecco perché, soprattutto nei negozi specializzati, si utilizza un testo a forma di racconto per dare un senso supplementare al packaging, supporto ideale per comunicare i messaggi chiave della marca.

• Si avverte la necessità di risvegliare e mantenere vivo il desiderio di un consumatore sempre più disincantato.

rendere più desiderabili i prodotti siano quelli “pre-industriali”, quelli che veicolano l’immagine nostalgica di un mondo lontano, considerato migliore.

Analogamente, ci fanno sognare anche i codici narrativi che raccontano della naturalità e della freschezza dei prodotti. Si evidenzia, in questo contesto, una vicinanza concettuale tra packaging e merchandising: entrambi devono creare un’atmosfera, un’impressione. Si profila dunque la tendenza di un “minor effetto packaging”, per non celare il contenuto del prodotto (si pensi alla trasparenza) a favore di un “effetto merchandising”, per poter presentare il prodotto con maggiore efficacia.

• Al contrario, per le vendite su Internet, l’imballaggio è il semplice mezzo di riconoscimento di un prodotto già familiare, da reperire in poco tempo.

• La praticità si è trasformata da “semplice” vantaggio a must, e questo vale per tutti i circuiti della distribuzione, lusso compreso: si studiano prodotti facili da utilizzare, leggeri, resistenti e possibilmente ecologici, dei quali amplificare le funzionalità sulla base delle esigenze immediate dei consumatori.

• Il prezzo resta un punto cruciale, l’hard discount guadagna terreno. Di fronte all’attitudine a non voler pagare troppo i prodotti di base, le limitazioni di carattere economico (in particolare nei mercati emergenti) possono essere il motore di scelte creative felici.

Tendenze: forme e caratteri • Quasi in un ritorno al packaging design delle origini, la funzione detta la forma. Ci si attende che materiali e forme prendano il sopravvento sulla grafica. A livello generale aumenta la voglia di praticità e i packaging sono sempre più funzionali: monoporzioni, contenitori a doppi comparti, chiusure ermetiche…La tendenza a una maggiore mobilità viene soddisfatta

poste da questa modalità di distribuzione: packaging più semplici, meno voluminosi, più economici ed ecologici per il trasporto, ma comunque curati dal punto di vista dell’immagine, addirittura specifici per le nuove marche nate su Internet.

Riassumendo…

Sembra dunque delinearsi un panorama complesso, dove spicca la sempre più decisa polarizzazione tra soluzioni di imballaggio estremamente semplici (economiche, efficaci, a basso impatto ambientale) e

confezioni ad alto valore aggiunto (più funzionali e comunicative). Vengono inoltre confermate le linee di tendenza attuali verso prodotti personalizzati, packaging veramente interattivi e derivati da istanze ecologiche più “ragionate”. Rimandiamo comunque al Congresso Pack.Vision per tutti gli approfondimenti del caso: le voci dei designer di fama internazionale che animeranno l’evento contribuiranno a tracciare una linea precisa di congiunzione tra imballaggio e distribuzione, dove il packaging sarà la sintesi ideale di miti collettivi, usi e consumi. Compito difficile, ma possibile.

anche da confezioni ad hoc, in particolare nelle bevande e nei cosmetici: contenitori combinati snack/bevande, bottiglie termiche, kit per trucco, fazzolettini per auto…

• Anche le aspettative di salute e benessere influenzano l’imballaggio. Si pensi ai contenitori studiati per la cottura a vapore o microonde, ai medicinali in capsule che rilasciano principi attivi, ma anche al desiderio di maggiore trasparenza, affinché il contenuto possa essere visto e valutato: “il prodotto è nudo” - come il Re - quasi intatto, come se l’intervento della catena industriale non fosse mai esistito.

• Così come i codici pre-industriali e nostalgici evocano desiderio, anche immagini molto realiste e calorose stimolano l’appetito (è vero in particolare per i prodotti alimentari di pregio).

• Personalizzare è la risposta obbligata alla frammentazione di target e stili di vita.

• Il cosiddetto packaging interattivo deve ancora liberare le proprie potenzialità rispetto alle aspettative in termini di comunicazione offerte dalle tecnologie (difficile trovare abbinamenti musica/packaging, ad esempio) .

• Le preoccupazioni ambientali non sembrano prioritarie per gli operatori del settore: lo sono invece ovviamente per i “cultural creatives” americani o gli “alter-consommateurs” in Francia.

L’atteggiamento diffuso però sembra più reattivo che proattivo, ovvero i produttori reagiscono solo sull’onda di pressioni esterne. Emblematico il caso di un grande distributore americano che, solo dopo l’incremento vertiginoso del prezzo del petrolio, ha adottato plastica compostabile al posto dei soliti polimeri per i propri contenitori.

• In relazione alle vendite su Internet, la rivoluzione dell’imballaggio è ancora di là da venire, l’industria non ha ancora riflettuto pienamente sulle sfide

The fair is fast approaching: it will take place in Paris Nord Villepinte between the 20th and 24th November this year; directed by Exposium, the gates will open on the international packaging show Emballage and IPA, event of international importance dedicated to food processing. For the 2006 edition, alongside a ponderous Observatory of the French market (for detecting trends and anticipating their potential developments), the organizers have in fact also commissioned a study with the descriptive title: “Evolution and challenges for packaging in the new context of distribution”. The themes of the dossier will be presented at the opening of the Pack.Vision congress will also form the lead thread of the debate between the international design studios, such as Bergman & Associates, Carré Noir, CB’A Design Solutions, Desgrippes, Dragon Rouge, Landor, Iosmotik, Pulp, Robilant & Associati. Here hence is a preview of the main points of the study that, starting with considerations on the ongoing changes in distribution, its locations and methods, traces an ideal profile of the packaging of tomorrow.

Reflections on consumption • If 2002 saw 55,000 “new” products, as many as 81,507 were registered in 2004 (and the statistics only include foodstuffs, beverages in particular, and cosmetics). It goes without saying therefore that

packaging is being forced to face the challenges that come with the drive to diversify on the one hand and the need to increase the allure of old and new products on the other.

• Distribution however has to deal with new demands and expectations: as well as keeping a check on prices and being more choosey, consumers want to make better use of their time. They also want to shop in areas that are on a more human scale that are more convivial and, if possible, convenient to get to. Furthermore, after having grasped the advantages of hard discounts, they want to be able to actually find the products in the mass circuits, accessible on different levels. Basically, consumers appear to be suffering from an “overdose” of proposals, preferring a more focused range of products better corresponding to their tastes and lifestyle.

• Concept stores and distribution of luxury products are a different matter. Here the consumer wants to have an unforgettable experience, to linger in places that have become “the new theatres of consumption”.

• Distribution will have to learn to adjust to increasingly complex and fragmented expectations and demands.

This is why supermarkets and hypermarkets are segmenting into different forms, corresponding to social “tribes” and sub-groups: supra-metropolitans, singles, small families, people always in a rush, health freaks…

Packaging codes • Since the need to stand out an absolute must, the most eye-catching packaging tends to be simple, easy to remember and made with basic shapes and colors.

• And yet the traditional role of packaging as communicator has now come to verge on advertising straight out, becoming the means for seducing the consumer, creating the link with the brand and encouraging the consumer to buy on impulse. This is why, in specialized shops in particular, wording in the form of a story is often used to lend additional meaning to packaging, which becomes the ideal means for communicating the key messages of a brand.

• One needs to awake and keep alive the desire of

Trends: forms and characters • Almost a return to packaging design at its origins, form follows function.

Materials and form are expected to take the upper hand over graphics. Generally speaking the desire for practicality is on the increase and packaging is becoming evermore functional: single portions, double compartment containers, airtight closures…

The tendency towards a greater mobility is also satisfied by special packs, in particular regarding beverages and cosmetics: combined snack/beverage containers, thermal bottles, make-up kits, wipes for the car…

• Expectations regarding health and wellness also influence packaging. One only has to think of the containers designed for steam or microwave cooking, medicinals in capsules that release active principles, but also the demand for greater transparency so that the contents can be seen and rated: “the product is naked” - like the King - almost intact, as if the intervention of the industrial supply chain never took place.

Summing things up…

A complex panorama emerges, where an evermore decided polarisation between extremely simple packaging solutions (economical, effective, low environmental impact) and packs with a high added value (more functional and communicative) emerges.

What is more the current trends towards personalised products (where monodose and modulatable solutions stand out) have been confirmed, along with truly interactive packaging and packaging created on more concrete ecological grounds.

We refer you to the Pack.Vision Congress for further details: the voices of packaging designers of international fame that will animate the event will contribute to drawing a precise line where packaging meets distribution, where packaging becomes the ideal syntheses of the collective myths, customs and habits.

• The same way as pre-industrial and nostalgic codes arouse desire, realistic and warm images stimulate the appetite (this is particularly true of quality food products).

• Personalise is the response that has to be made to the fragmentation of targets and lifestyles.

• Socalled interactive packaging still has to achieve its true potential as rated against the expectations in terms of communication offered by technology (for example it’s hard to find music/packaging combinations).

• Environmental care doesn’t seem to have priority for sector operators: it obviously does for American “cultural creatives” or “alter-consommateurs” in France.

Leaving out the countries of northern Europe, the widespread approach seems more reactive than proactive, or that is producers react in the wake of outside pressure.

Emblematic the case of a big US distributor that, only after a heady increase in petrol prices, used compostable plastic to replace the standard polymers used for its containers.

• As regards sales on Internet, the packaging revolution has yet to come. Industry still has not fully reflected on the challenges posed by this mode of distribution: simpler, less voluminous packaging, more economic and ecological for transport, but still neat in terms of image, even specifically made for the new brands created on the Internet.

It appears that the best codes for product desirability are the “preindustrial” ones, that is, the ones that portray the nostalgic image of a distant and better world. Other codes that make us dream are narrative ones referring to the product’s naturalness and freshness. In this context, a conceptual rapprochement appears to be taking place between packaging and merchandising: they both have to create an atmosphere, an impression.

A trend is also forming for a “lesser packaging effect”, so as not to conceal the product contents (with transparency, for instance) and favoring a “merchandising effect”, so as to have a more effective presentation of the product.

• Against this however, as regards Internet sales, packaging is a simple means of recognizing a familiar product, to be got hold of quickly.

• Practicality has turned from a “simple” advantage into a must, and this applies to all distribution circuits, luxury included: products are designed to be easy to use, light, sturdy and possibly ecological, their functionality increased according to the consumers’ immediate demands.

• The price remains a crucial point, with hard discounts gaining ground. With people not being willing to pay a lot for basic products, limitations of an economic nature (particularly in emerging markets) can engender successful creative choices.

Agli aromi di frutta, zucchero e cioccolato o con la consistenza di creme alla vaniglia e di mousse alla panna, nei toni del maraschino o del marzapane, un tripudio di dolcezza invade le nostre papille e solletica le nostre narici. Le confezioni ricordano i vasetti di miele e le marmellate della nonna, bricchi di latte e lecca-lecca dell’infanzia; le etichette sono (fin troppo) esplicite, i colori realistici: yogurt, fragole e agrumi, nocciole e bonbon. Ma attenzione, non assaggiare, potrebbe essere pericoloso: come la mela di Biancaneve.

These are “gluttonous” cosmetics and perfumes which, before they make us beautiful, cause our mouths to water and reawaken our senses. Fruit, sugar and chocolate scented, with the texture of vanilla custard or cream mousse, in hues of maraschino cherry or marzipan, an orgy of sweetness overwhelms our taste-buds and tickles our nostrils. The packaging recalls pots of honey and grandma’s home-made jam, cartons of milk and lollipops; the labels are (too) explicit, the colours realistic: yoghurt, strawberry and citrus fruits, hazelnuts and bon-bons. But beware, don’t put them in your mouth, they might be dangerous, like the apple in Snow-White and the Seven Dwarves.

Eccellenza e passione: un binomio che caratterizza la collaborazione tra Alessi e la Fondazione Onlus Slow Food per la Biodiversità per promuovere un’iniziativa che vede abbinati il piacere del gusto e la creatività del design.

Con la collezione “Il gusto del design”, lanciata nel 2005, Alessi abbina dieci oggetti, icone dell’azienda e portavoce della cultura del buon mangiare e del buon vivere, ad altrettanti prodotti gastronomici d’eccellenza selezionati fra quelli dei Presìdi della Fondazione Slow Food, con l’ambizioso compito di custodirne e comunicarne la tradizione e l’unicità.

I Presìdi sono progetti concreti per la tutela dei piccoli produttori e per la salvaguardia dei prodotti artigianali di qualità di tutto il mondo. Il loro obiettivo è garantire un futuro alle comunità locali: organizzando i produttori, cercando nuovi sbocchi di mercato, promuovendo e valorizzando sapori e territori. Zafferano, sale marino, lenticchie, riso, miele, caffè, vaniglia, mandorle, fichi, paste di meliga, tutti provenienti da micro-produzioni locali, vengono proposti al pubblico insieme a un oggetto Alessi adatto a contenerli e a servirli con uno stile appropriato a quel valore “aggiunto” che attribuisce all’acquisto di questi particolari prodotti alimentari il significato di gesto etico e consapevole. Il packaging, curato internamente all’Alessi, si presenta come una semplice scatola di legno grezzo che, con elegante naturalezza, contiene l’oggetto ed il prodotto gastronomico custoditi su strisce di carta colorata. Le confezioni dei cibi sono, perlopiù, quelle originali e tradizionali, mentre alcune altre sono state ridisegnate in modo da valorizzarne il particolare contenuto.

Un’etichetta, dalla grafica essenziale, riproduce l’immagine dell’oggetto Alessi e il prodotto gastronomico oppure una suggestione del luogo di provenienza o della lavorazione del prodotto.

The Flavour of Design

Excellence and passion: a couplet that features in the cooperation between Alessi and the non profitmaking foundation Slow Food for Biodiversity, for promoting an undertaking that matches the pleasure of taste to the creativity of design. With the collection “A taste for design”, launched in 2005, Alessi pairs up ten objects, icons of the concern and spokespersons for the culture of good food and good living, to the same number of gastronomic products of excellence chosen from among the Protected items of the Slow Food Foundation, this with the ambitious task of preserving and communicating their tradition and uniqueness.

The Protection schemes are concrete projects to aid and protect small producers and to safeguard quality foodcraft concerns the world over. Their objective is to guarantee a future to local communities: organising the producers, seeking new market outlets, promoting and valorising flavours and areas. Saffron, marine salt, lentils, rice, honey, coffee, vanilla, almonds, figs, meliga trifle, all from local micro-production, are offered to the public along with an Alessi object suited for containing and serving the same with a style appropriate to that “added value” that makes the purchase of these special projects an ethical, socially conscious gesture. œThe packaging, designed and devised inhouse by Alessi, features a simple box of untreated wood that, with elegant naturalness, contains the object and the gastronomic product protected in strips of colored paper.

The food items are for the most in their original and traditional packs, while some have been redesigned to enhance their contents, A label, with essential graphics, bears the image of the Alessi product and its gastronomic pair or an indication as to the area of origin or the working of the food product. Inside you can find a pamphlet that recounts the philosophy behind Slow Food, its history, the purpose and the functioning of the projects to guarantee biodiversity.

Dal Packaging al Design

Traendo ispirazione dal quotidiano e dal packaging, lampade ingegnose ed eleganti: questa in apertura ad esempio, è ricavata da centinaia di bicchierini di yogurt; creata da Valentin Duceac, giovane designer rumeno/canadese.

MILANO, APRILE 2006. Al Salone del Mobile e, in particolare al SaloneSatellite, protagonista è il giovane design nazionale ed internazionale, quello più sperimentale, innovativo, audace, indipendente; quello non ancora entrato nei complessi circuiti dell’industria e dei media. È il design dei giovani per i giovani e degli entusiasti che vorrebbero cambiare il mondo (degli oggetti) senza passare inosservati. Non sorprende, quindi, che tra i tanti riferimenti formali e concettuali a cui si sono ispirati i vari creativi, anche l’imballaggio - con le sue tipologie, materiali e tecnologie - abbia giocato un ruolo importante diventando strumento per realizzare divani, mobili, lampade e accessori. Una varietà di prodotti ha preso forma dalle forme del packaging: dagli sgabelli che sembrano scatoloni, ma realizzati in metallo, alle lampade costruite con i contenitori delle uova o con i vasetti di yogurt. Dalle poltroncine da ufficio realizzate con centinaia di shoppers, al tappeto sagomato come la fustella di una scatola. Dalle scrivanie costruite con le cassette di plastica al pouff a forma di tetraedro (in omaggio al primo vero contenitore di latte imbustato). E poi ancora: teddy bear come sacchi per l’immondizia, lampade che sembrano scatole di legno, computer avvolti da eleganti buste di feltro, cestini gettacarte che sembrano sacchetti di carta spiegazzati. Insomma, un tripudio di packaging per rinnovare, arricchire ed esaltare l’ormai saturo mondo dell’arredamento.

6 - Il gruppo trevigiano [MT]design[R], per realizzare scrivanie, tavoli da lavoro, armadi e arredi vari, ha usato grandi cassette di plastica rossa, quelle comunemente usate nel trasporto di materiali.

7 - Gli oggetti del designer Ryan Frank sono spesso costruiti con tecniche di produzione tradizionali e utilizzano materiali di recupero o riciclati. La sedia Inkuku, che in lingua Zulu vuol dire pollo, è realizzata con decine di shopping bag e s’ispira ad alcuni tipici ornamenti sudafricani a forma di gallina.

8 - Shay Alkalay ha modificato la forma del tradizionale sacco nero dell’immondizia e ha realizzato Bin Bag Bear un divertente contenitore sagomato come un teddy bear. Forse è stato pensato per invogliare grandi e piccini a rimpinzare l’orsetto evitando così di gettare rifiuti nell’ambiente.

9 - Per contenere, avvolgere e proteggere il computer, la busta in feltro arancione di Redmaloo, azienda specializzata nella realizzazione di borse e porta-computer con materiali artigianali e tradizionali ma rivisitati in chiave contemporanea. Le prime borse per computer, ad esempio, utilizzavano i tessuti di una prestigiosa fabbrica di kimono di Tokyo.

10 - L’architetto Andrea Gianni ha realizzato una serie di vasi e tavoli basando la sua poetica sul tema del riuso, non solo dei materiali ma anche dell’immagine, questi oggetti, infatti, in cartone tripla onda, formalmente riecheggiano gli archetipi dell’immaginario domestico.

11 - Sempre in tema di lampade, Cubix, di Catherine Mui per Goodss, non si ispira direttamente a un imballaggio, però è una scatola, di legno, che contiene luce. È un oggetto poetico e inconsueto, una piccola cassettiera magica per fugare le ombre della notte.

and by enthusiasts who want to change the world (of objects) and leave their mark. It is no wonder then that, of the many formal and conceptual references to inspire the miscellaneous designers, packaging too, with its typologies, materials and technologies, has played an important part, becoming a tool with which to produce sofas, furniture, lamps and accessories. A variety of products has taken shape out of packaging: from stools which look like boxes, but made of metal, to lamps made of egg boxes or yoghurt pots. From office chairs made of hundreds of shoppers, to rugs shaped like the die of a box.

From desks made of plastic crates to tetrahedron poufs (in honour of the first real milk container). And more: teddy bear rubbish bags, lamps which look like wooden boxes, computers wrapped in elegant felt bags, wastepaper bins which look like bags of crumpled paper. All in all, a riot of packaging to renew, embellish and intoxicate the now saturated world of furniture.

6 The firm from Treviso [MT]design[R], used large red plastic crates, commonly used for transporting materials, to make desks, work tables, cupboards and various pieces of furniture.

7 The objects by designer Ryan Frank are often made, using traditional manufacturing techniques, out of salvaged or recycled materials. The chair Inkuku, which in Zulu means chicken, was made out of dozens of shopping bags and inspired by some typical South African chicken shaped ornaments.

Their first computer bags, for example, were made of fabric from a prestigious kimono factory in Tokyo.

10 Architect Andrea Gianni made a series of vases and tables basing his poetics on the theme of recycling, not just of materials but also of the look. Indeed, these objects in triplestrength corrugated cardboard, formally echo the archetypal images of the domestic environment.

Certainly over time the techniques have evolved a lot, and in particular hot printing has meant that virtually any material can be covered with symbols and colors, and Oropress is also a leader in this field. Haptic L’azienda cartografica giapponese Takeo, in occasione del Paper Show 2004, ha presentato sotto l’art direction di Kenya Hara, all’Aoyama Spiral di Tokio, una serie di oggetti d’uso comune ispirati al tema della tattilità dal titolo “Haptic” (tattile). La domanda che ci si poneva era: a quale design può dare origine il senso del tatto? Hanno variamente risposto 21 progettisti, ideando oggetti il cui elemento principale era, per l’appunto, qualcosa di “palpabile”. Il designer Naoto Fukasawa, in particolare, ha sviluppato originali imballaggi per succhi di frutta riproducenti le caratteristiche tattili e olfattive della buccia del frutto; la confezione del succo di kiwi, ad esempio, in superficie è leggermente pelosa, proprio come il frutto vero. Lo scorso novembre, a Stoccolma, in occasione del convegno FuturDesignDays, lo stesso Fukasawa ha presentato questi irresistibili packaging sensoriali.

Haptic The Japanese cartographers Takeo, in occasion of Paper Show 2004, Tokyo, under the art direction of Kenya Hara at the Aoyama Spiral, presented a series of objects of common use inspired by the theme of tactileness, under the title “Haptic”. The question that was asked was: what design can originate from the sense of touch?

Twenty-one designers gave various answers, creating objects whose main element was in fact something “palpable”. The designer Naoto Fukasawa in particular designed original packaging for fruit juices reproducing the tactile and olfactory characteristics of fruit peel and fruit skins; the kiwi juice pack for example has a slightly hairy surface, like the actual fruit. Fukasawa’s irresistible sensorial packaging was also presented last November, at Stockholm, in occasion of the convention FuturDesignDays, by the artist himself.

Perché oggi un produttore italiano abbandona la tradizionale e consolidata bottiglia di vino?

Le motivazioni che spingono oggi a modificare l’immagine di marca e di prodotto - spiega Francesco Voltolina sono il risultato dell’evoluzione avvenuta in anni recenti nella percezione del prodotto vinicolo da parte del consumatore. Il vino oggi è vissuto non più solo come prodotto alimentare, quanto piuttosto come momento di gratificazione, di comunicazione interpersonale e di “cultura”. Perciò, dal punto di vista estetico, non lavoriamo solo sullo “stile” ma anche sul “contenuto”, vale a dire sulla trasmissione di quei valori simbolici e quei riferimenti culturali, che parlano di innovazione e nuove situazioni di consumo.

Assecondati da una tradizione troppo importante per essere facilmente dimenticata, l’immagine, la comunicazione e, naturalmente, il packaging dei vini italiani - nella maggior parte dei casi - trovano una difficoltà enorme nel ripensare se stessi in chiave contemporanea; chi non ha mai visto quelle belle immagini di campagna toscana (con il profilo di una collina soleggiata e un cipresso solitario ai bordi della stradina che scende a valle, curvando appena), utilizzate ormai da troppo tempo, da produttori d’ogni latitudine, come sfondo per etichette e brochure?

Quelle icone hanno come pietrificato il ritratto del vino italiano e, per confermare attraverso il packaging la propria italianità (ma è poi così importante?), si è giurata fedeltà alla campagna idilliaca utilizzando bottiglie bordolesi con etichette nere (o color avorio), con un disegno al tratto delle vigne (o della botte o della cantina...) e con stemma familiare dorato (o rosso, magari a rilievo).

Tuttavia, nuove generazioni di produttori, incoraggiate anche dal look talvolta aggressivo dei vini esteri, hanno iniziato a proporre per le loro bottiglie un’immagine diversa; finalmente, per affrontare le sfide del nuovo mercato globale, il design è stato arruolato nella “task force” della comunicazione in modo da trasformare i nuovi imballaggi in comunicatori d’innovazione.

affermare un’identità nuova, piuttosto che riferirsi a una tradizione che non c’è - afferma Bersanetti - ma anche aziende con un lungo percorso alle spalle ricorrono all’innovazione del packaging per comunicare il proprio dinamismo e la capacità di evolvere.

L’intervento in questi casi, può configurarsi con diverse modalità: da un restyling più prudente fino all’introduzione di elementi totalmente dirompenti.

Dove vengono più facilmente venduti i vini italiani con un’immagine diversa e non tradizionale: nelle enoteche, nella grande distribuzione, nel settore della ristorazione, oppure all'estero?

Il canale di vendita come variabile unica e vincolante nella scelta d’impostazione del packaging non è più così importante - concordano Bersanetti e Voltolina - perché la proposta del prodotto vinicolo, anche nella grande distribuzione, oggi avviene con modalità sempre più attente a valorizzarlo, e offre una gamma diversificata che comprende anche prodotti di qualità elevata. Oltre a questo si aggiunga l’ingresso sul mercato di vini provenienti da nuove aree di produzione (Cile, Australia, Sud Africa), che determina un panorama sempre più articolato, in cui si confrontano vestizioni più tradizionali con altre radicalmente orientate all’innovazione.

Dunque i due elementi che sembrano aver imposto una svolta all’immagine del vino italiano sono il cambio d’identità (da prodotto alimentare ad attore della convivialità) e la concorrenza dei vini stranieri.

Due elementi che il packaging ha la responsabilità di far convivere nell’estetica di una bottiglia.

“degustazione = esperienza”. Le bottiglie dell’azienda francese XLwines non parlano di antiche vigne, colline e cieli azzurri, ma ci dicono l’ora. Come un orologio, comunicano (e fotografano) l’ora ideale per la degustazione del vino imbottigliato.

Un’idea quasi dirompente, per un settore in cui generalmente è premiato chi trasmette al pubblico, come massimo valore, la qualità del vitigno, dell’aroma...

Un settore che per espandersi ha scelto la strada dei corsi da sommelier, emarginando in questo modo quella fascia di consumatori, ovviamente maggioritaria, che beve non per dimostrare la propria competenza ma per puro e semplice diletto. Le bottiglie di XLwines potrebbero far correre un brivido lungo la schiena degli enologi, ma indubbiamente hanno trovato un nuovo modo per dialogare con le nuove generazioni. E questo è un dato non di poco conto, per chi vorrà vendere i propri vini anche fra cent’anni.

Per confermare il valore della degustazione, come parte integrante del prodotto vino, è illuminante anche l’esperienza del designer Luigi Colani.

Airlines ha indetto il concorso “Flying Object of the future” con cui chiedeva di immaginare gli aerei che avrebbero volato nel 2050. Colani ha vinto il concorso e quest’anno Japan Airlines ha ottenuto di poter utilizzare i suoi progetti per illustrare le etichette dei vini serviti a bordo dei loro aerei.

anche la sua etichetta doveva essere tanto originale da non avere nulla a che fare con il mondo dell’enologia, bensì con il design e l’ingegneria spaziale. In Italia, intanto, il “wine” design affronta la sperimentazione dei materiali. Enrico Azzimonti ha completato di recente, per l’azienda Mario Fernando, il progetto di un fiasco in puro acciaio inox. La scelta di questo materiale è dovuta alla sua capacità di preservare molto bene le caratteristiche organolettiche del vino, tanto che i produttori lavorano e conservano mosti e vini in grandi container d’acciaio. In questo packaging la forma - chiara citazione del tradizionale fiasco - introduce l’elemento storico per trasmettere il valore del vino, una campitura rossa gioca con l’iconografia della bottiglia, diventando anche lo sfondo per la futura etichetta, stampata in tampografia. L’ironia, la tradizione e l’innovazione hanno saputo trovare, in questa bottiglia d’acciaio, un buon testimonial, ora bisognerà attendere un produttore coraggioso che lo riempia e gli aggiunga il proprio nome.

Maria Gallo Backed by a tradition which is too important to be shrugged off, it is extremely difficult in the majority of cases to conceive of the image, the advertising and, naturally, the packaging of Italian wines in a contemporary context. Who hasn’t seen those lovely images of the Tuscan countryside (the outline of a sun-drenched hill and a lone cypress on the side of a narrow road snaking down into a valley) used now for far too long, by producers from all latitudes as a background for labels and brochures?

Those icons have almost set the image of Italian wine in stone and in order for the packaging to confirm the Italian-ness of the product (but is this so very important?) allegiance has been sworn to this idyllic spot using Bordeaux bottles with black (or ivory) labels with the outline of vines (or barrels or the cellar…) and with a golden (or red and perhaps embossed) family crest. However, new generations of producers, also encouraged by the sometimes aggressive look of overseas wines, have begun to give their bottles a different look and, finally, in order to face up to the challenge of the new global market, the advertising “task force” have enlisted design in such as way as to transform the new packaging into a vehicle of innovation.

We pursued the matter further with Francesco Voltolina and Giacomo Bersanetti, packaging designers, experts on the wine sector and founders of Studio Grafico Artigiano.

Why are Italian producers now abandoning the traditional and consolidated wine bottle?

The reasons which persuade people to modify the image of the brand and product - explains Francesco Voltolina - are the result of the evolution which has taken place in recent years in the perception of the wine product on the part of the consumer. Today wine is no longer merely seen as a food product but rather as a moment of gratification, of interpersonal communication and of “culture”. So, from the aesthetic point of view, we don’t just work on “style” but also on “content”, that is to say on the transmission of those symbolic values and those cultural references which communicate innovation and new consumer habits.

Who asks for a more contemporary pack and image? Just young producers or “old” companies too wishing to be more up-to-date?

Young companies would rather have a brand new identity than allude to a tradition which doesn’t exist says Bersanetti - but companies which have been around for a long time turn to innovative packaging in order to communicate their dynamism and capacity to evolve. There are many ways it can be done: from more conservative restyling to the introduction of truly sensational elements.

Where are Italian wines which have a different and not traditional image most easily sold: in wine stores, in the large scale retail trade, in the catering sector, or overseas?

To underscore the value of tasting, as an integral part of the wine product, the experience of designer Luigi Colani is also illuminating.

In 2000 Japan Airlines held a competition with the title “Flying Object of the future” in which they asked people to imagine the kind of aeroplanes which would be flying in 2050.

Colani won the competition and this year Japan Airlines has used his designs to illustrate the labels of the wines served on their flights. Therefore, not only was a special wine created to be drunk on special occasions, but the label also had to be so original that it had nothing at all to do with the world of wine, but everything to do with spatial design and engineering.

Meanwhile, in Italy “wine” design is experimenting with different materials. Enrico Azzimonti has recently completed the design for a bottle in pure inox steel for Mario Fernando.

This material was chosen due to its ability to preserve the organoleptic properties of the wine perfectly, to the extent that producers process and store must and wine in large steel containers. In this packaging the shape - a blatant copy of the traditional bottle - introduces the historical element in order to convey the value of the wine.

A red background interacts with the iconography of the bottle, and also becomes the background for the future pad printed labek.

Irony, tradition and innovation have found an excellent testimonial in this steel bottle. Now we must wait for a bold product to fill and add its name to it.

The sales channel as a unique and binding variable in the choice of packaging approach is no longer so important - agree Bersanetti and Voltolina - because there is more and more emphasis on enhancing the wine offer even in the largescale retail trade and there is also a broad range of products including top quality wines. As well as this there are now wines from new areas of production (Chile, South Africa, Australia) which vary the offer even further, and where more traditional packaging comes up against other types of packaging that are more radically innovative.

Therefore, the two elements which seem to have led to a revolution in the image of Italian wine are its changing identity (from food product to a begetter of conviviality) and competition from overseas wines.

Both elements which the packaging has to make coexist in the aesthetics of the bottle.

Within this sphere overseas producers appear to have more leeway than in the past and start with the theme “tasting = experience”.

The bottles of French company Xlwines do not make any reference to ancient vineyards, hills and blue skies but tell us the time.

Like a clock they show and (photograph) the ideal time for tasting the bottled wine. An almost groundbreaking idea for a sector which generally rewards those who convey to the consumer, as a supreme value, the quality of the grape, the bouquet…A sector which, in order to expand, has plumped for courses in wine-tasting, thus marginalizing that group of consumers, obviously the majority, who drink wine not just to show off their expertise but for pure and simple pleasure.

Xlwine bottles might make oenologists shudder but they have definitely discovered a new way of communicating with new generations. And this is no

Scuola Superiore di Design - Barcellona L’ELISAVA di Barcellona è stata la pioniera delle scuole spagnole dedicate alla progettazione nel senso più ampio del termine, dal product design alla grafica, dalla comunicazione alla moda, dall’architettura alla fotografia, dal design strategico all’architettura, dall’interior al web design.

In questo istituto si possono conoscere e studiare tutti gli ambiti della creatività, anche quelli contemporanei dedicati, per esempio, ai nuovi media digitali, allo spettacolo, all’information design.

packaging: si tratta di un corso post-diploma e di un master.

Il corso post-diploma in Design, Produzione e Management del Packaging, giunto alla sua terza edizione, offre un percorso quadrimestrale per professionisti che intendono acquisire una conoscenza globale sulle differenti fasi del progetto, l’utilizzo dei materiali e il sistema di produzione del packaging, con aggiornamenti sulle più recenti tecnologie del settore. Il Master in Graphic Production e Packaging, invece, è rivolto in maniera specifica a quegli studenti che hanno superato l’esame del postdiploma e che intendono approfondire l’argomento con

tematiche più specifiche.

At Packaging School

ELISAVA Advanced School of Design - Barcelona ELISAVA is, in general terms, the first school of its kind in Barcelona, with subjects ranging from product design to graphics, communications to fashion, architecture to photography and strategic design to interior and web design.

All fields of creativity can be found and studied at this institute including modern fields such as digital media, entertainment and information design. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that two of its many courses are expressly about packaging: an undergraduate course and a master’s course.

The four-month undergraduate course in Packaging Design, Production and Management, which has now run for three years, is aimed at professionals interested in a global approach to project planning, use of materials and packaging production systems, with updates on the most recent technologies in the sector.

The Master’s course in Graphic Production and Packaging, on the other hand, is specifically aimed at students who have passed their undergraduate exam and wish to acquire more in-depth knowledge of specific areas. Both courses, of compulsory full attendance,

comprise theory lessons, educational workshops, seminars, visits and direct work with concerns. œEach student has to take an exam upon completion of the intense degree studies and training period and present projects carried out during the course. The school demonstrates further dedication to its students by providing a careers guidance service.

L’ingrediente primo e indispensabile di tutte le delizie è lo zucchero: siamo abituati a vederlo sfuso o in zolletta, impacchettato o in bustine; ma non c’è limite alla creatività e alcuni designer hanno trovato nuove e divertenti soluzioni per impacchettare la dolce polverina. Charlene Smeeth, ad esempio, durante lo scorso Salone del mobile di Milano, nell’esposizione “Tea for two”, ha presentato Sweet Crystalline, una confezione simile a un blister farmaceutico che, anziché medicinali contiene pastiglie di zucchero. Ogni dose racchiude l’equivalente di un cucchiaino, il progetto, infatti, è concepito per aiutare il consumatore a monitorare e a controllare la quantità di zuccheri assunta nell’arco della giornata.

Anche Andreas Fabian ha riflettuto sul delizioso alimento e ha proposto Sugar scoop, un minimale e prezioso (è d’argento) cucchiaino da inserire direttamente nel pacchetto di zucchero

e creare così un nuovo e atipico quanto snob - modello di zuccheriera.

Sempre in tema di cucchiaini, quello impacchettato nella bustina monodose Plantaciones non è né prezioso né bello, è una semplice paletta di plastica, ma che torna assai utile quando cerchiamo qualcosa per girare il caffè e non siamo né a casa né al bar. Un pack ideale per i takeaway.

In Describe something sweet i designer Cornelia Blatter e Marcel Hermans hanno approfondito il senso narrativo ed evocativo di questo tema, chiedendo a persone di differente estrazione sociale, sesso, età, di “descrivere qualcosa di dolce”. Ogni risposta, ogni storia, è raccontata da una delle 120 zollette di zucchero incartate singolarmente e vendute in scatole colorate; anche la scrittura appartiene alle persone intervistate“Nessuna singola risposta dice più di un’altra”, spiegano i designer, “e prese tutte insieme rivelano: romanticismo, divertimento, apertura, stupidità, fame e lealtà - un universo infinito”.

In questo panorama di dolcezza, è meglio non lasciarsi ingolosire né ingannare dalle bianche zollette di Biocoter: non si immergono nel tè e neppure nel caffè, ma solo in fumanti vasche da bagno. Gli effervescenti cubetti, alla delicata fragranza di zucchero a velo, sono l’ideale per l’idromassaggio, addolciscono la pelle e aromatizzano l’ambiente. Così poi, una volta riposati e rilassati, e finalmente in pace con noi stessi, non avremo più bisogno di mangiare “qualcosa di dolce” per compensare carenze affettive e ansie quotidiane.

Sugar is the key and most indispensable ingredient for all delights. We are used to seeing sugar loose or in lumps, in packs or sachets; but there is no end to creativity and several designers have devised novel and interesting solutions for packing sugar: at the “Tea for two” exhibition of the latest Milan Furniture Show, for example, Charlene Smeeth presented Sweet Crystalline, which resembles a blister pack but contains sugar pastilles instead of pharmaceuticals. Each dose is the equivalent of a small spoonful. The aim of the project, in fact, is to help the consumer monitor and control daily sugar intake.

Another designer to have considered this delicious foodstuff is Andreas Fabian who devised Sugar scoop, a minimalist and graceful silver spoon to be directly inserted in the sugar packet to thus create a new and atypical - as well as snobbish - type of sugar bowl.

Talking of spoons, the one packed in the monodose Plantaciones sachet is neither beautiful nor graceful as it is merely a plastic stirrer, but it is extremely useful for stirring coffee when not at home or at the

bar. This pack is ideal for takeaways.

In Describe something sweet, the designers Cornelia Blatter and Marcel Hermans developed upon the narrative and evocative potential of their theme title by interviewing people of different genders, ages and social backgrounds, inviting them to “describe something sweet”. The answers, or stories, come with each of the 120 individually wrapped sugar lumps sold in colored boxes; even the handwriting belongs to the people interviewed. “No particular response features above the others”, the designers explain, “and taken as a whole, they touch upon romanticism, having fun, openness, stupidity, hunger and loyalty - there’s an infinite variety”.

In this context of sweet things, however, we should not be fooled nor our appetites be whetted by the white sugar lumps by Biocoter: they are designed to be mixed not in tea or coffee, but in steaming baths.

These effervescent cubes, with the delicate fragrance of icing sugar, are ideal for hydromassage, for sweetening the skin and aromatizing the room. Thus rested and relaxed, you will at last feel at peace with yourself and no longer crave “something sweet” to compensate for lack of affection or daily anxieties.

Quali sono le città che avete selezionato le cui specialità compaiono nel vostro negozio?

Sono le grandi metropoli europee come Parigi, Londra, Madrid, Berlino, Roma; ma ci sono anche altre città, importanti per cultura, arte e gastronomia, come Lisbona, Praga, Stoccolma, Amsterdam, Dublino, Vienna, Anversa, Zurigo e molte altre ancora.

Con quale criterio scegliete le prelibatezze gastronomiche che proponete ai vostri clienti?

Ci piace selezionare quei prodotti che hanno una lunga tradizione o che sono le specialità delle diverse città.

All’ingresso c’è la vetrina delle novità scoperte da me o dal nostro team in giro per l’Europa, così da non lasciare mai “a bocca asciutta” chi si affida a noi per soddisfare le proprie curiosità da globe trotter.

Secondo lei, che importanza ha il packaging? Esiste una relazione diretta tra confezione e qualità del prodotto?

L’imballaggio ha un ruolo importante, certo, specialmente per il nostro tipo di clientela, attenta ed esigente.

Il rapporto della confezione con la qualità del prodotto è fondamentale.

Faccio un esempio: una pasta fatta a mano, realizzata in modo tradizionale, non può essere impacchettata in una confezione hightech o troppo moderna, genererebbe diffidenza, si penserebbe a qualcosa di artificiale e il produttore ne sarebbe subito penalizzato.

Può farci un esempio di delicious food che, con il suo packaging, bene rappresenta una determinata città o nazione?

Ne ho più di uno che trovo rappresentativo. Per Parigi ci sono i pasticcini di Ladurée; per Nizza, l’olio d’oliva Alizari. Le confezioni di cioccolato Hamann per Berlino; il formaggio di Paxton & Whitfield per Londra; il caffè Doge per Venezia, es i Cantucci Mantonella per Prato.

Oltre a quelle già menzionate, inserirete anche altre città (con i loro particolari prodotti) nella rete di smart-travelling?

Si aggiungeranno Istanbul, Budapest e un aggiornamento di Londra.

I luoghi da visitare, nel nostro negozio, sono molti, e venire qua è come fare un piccolo viaggio senza dover partire davvero. Tante persone praticano questi “viaggi mentali” e oltre che con i prodotti gastronomici riescono a farlo anche attraverso le guide o i libri di cucina che proponiamo: pensate che abbiamo lettori appassionati di cucina che non cucinano mai!

Smart-Traveling: Delights from the World In Berlin there is a small world dedicated to the traveler: bags, clothing, books, cosmetics, rare souvenirs, but aboveall gastronomic specialties and delicatessen products. A selection of Europe’s best. Francalma Nieddu The idea comes from the 42 year old fashion designer Nicola Bramigk, a great traveler. Before opening his shop Nicola created an unusual on-line guide, the smart-traveling.net, for those who are often on the move for work and who are looking for suggestions to live well and change these brief trips into an out-of-the-ordinary experience.

Every hotel, restaurant, bar indicated in the site is guaranteed to be unique and original and responds perfectly to the demands of the atypical traveler, with a high aesthetic sense and a special leaning towards individual behaviour. In that, whether for business or for pleasure, the smart travelers are continuously “on the road”, the quality and the updatedness of information on the places to visit has to be guaranteed; this is done by a group of people who travel around Europe continuously search for new places, as well as monitoring those already selected. In 2003, finally the virtual guide was turned into an actual showcase with the opening in Berlin of the shop Smart-Traveling.

We are curious to find out more about it and, after tasting the Austrian mustard jam on a fresh slice of Puglia bread, we set some questions to the owner Nicola Bramigk.

What cities have you chosen whose specialties appear in your shop?

We have chosen the large European metropolises like Paris, London, Madrid, Berlin, Rome; but other cities, important for culture, art and gastronomy, also feature, such as Lisbon, Prague, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Dublin, Vienna, Antwerp, Zurich and many others.

What criteria do you use in choosing the gastronomic delicacies that you offer your customers?

We like to choose those products that have a long tradition or that are specialties of the various cities.

At the entrance there is a showcase of the discoveries made by me or by our team traveling

around Europe, so as not to disappoint those who turn to us to satisfy their globetrotting curiosities.

In your opinion, what importance does packaging have? Does a direct relationship exist between the pack and the quality of the selfsame product?

Packaging certainly plays an important role, especially for our type of client/customer, demanding and choosey. The relationship of the pack with the product quality is fundamental. I will make an example: traditional hand-made pasta cannot be packed in a hi-tech or overly modern pack.

This would arouse mistrust, one would think of something artificial and the producer would be immediately penalised.

Can you give us an example of delicious food that, with your packaging, well represents a given city our nation?

I have several which I find representative. The Ladurée confectionery can be seen to represent Paris; Alizari olive oil Nice. The Hamann chocolate packs for Berlin; Paxton & Whitfield cheese for London; Doge coffee representing Venice, and Mantonella Cantucci biscuits representing Prato.

As well as those already mentioned, will you insert other cities (with their particular products) in the smart-traveling network?

We will add Istanbul and Budapest and update London. The places to be visited in our shop are indeed many, and coming here is like making a short trip without really having to go away at all.

Many people go on these “mental trips” and as well as with the gastronomic products they manage to do the same with the guides and the cookery books that we offer: just imagine. We have cookery reading enthusiasts that never even cook!

Marco Senaldi Il lavoro di Leonardo Pivi (Cesena 1965) è difficile da catalogare.

Emerso nei primi anni Novanta, ha attraversato varie stagioni creative, prima di raggiungere una sorta di equilibrio dimostrato dalla produzione dell’ultimo periodo. Questo equilibrio è il frutto di una difficile sintesi tra orientamenti diversi: il ritorno alla pittura, sfociato nel cosiddetto “realismo nevrotico”, da un lato, e il revival del classicismo più desueto, tipico di un certo citazionismo, dall’altro.

L’arte di Pivi è passata attraverso un lungo cammino, reso accidentato da queste trappole, ma è riuscito a salvare gli elementi più elevati e

insieme la capacità di scendere nel cuore della realtà odierna e di estrarne una verità genuina. L’opera di Pivi non è definibile in modo univoco - si spazia da galline teratomorfe in marmo bianco, a stravaganti totem di dimensioni lillipuziane incisi su sassolini o su pietre dure, da microsculture-gioiello in oro e pietre preziose, a pannelli a mosaico di enormi dimensioni raffiguranti schermate del web (come per l’opera pubblica collocata alla fermata Repubblica della metropolitana milanese), a micromosaici realizzati con l’antichissima tecnica dell’opus vermiculatum di ascendenza romana,

le cui tessere non superano i pochi millimetri di grandezza micromosaici che poi l’artista si diverte a incastonare nelle copertine di rotocalchi o in confezioni di merci.

Si tratta dunque di un’opera caratterizzata da un bagaglio tecnico notevolissimo, acquisito in anni d’esperienza, che però non scade mai nel virtuosismo fine a se stesso il che fa di Pivi, viceversa, un artista virtuoso, che non si trincera nell’abilità manuale ma non teme di confrontarsi con i temi più scottanti dell’attualità. È proprio tramite questa intersezione di realtà tanto diverse un’opera di raffinatissima ed esclusiva fattura, che rifà le icone di merci prodotte in serie o le immagini stampate in milioni di esemplari sulle pagine dei quotidiani - che Pivi ci regala una dimensione inedita, tante volte inseguita dall’arte dei giorni nostri, quanto raramente conseguita.

Questa dimensione esiste, Pivi ce ne consegna le prove materiali, e non dovremmo avere timore di definirla una nuova classicità antitradizionale.

Micromosaico, pittura, marmo, persino gioielli e oro, la tua creatività non conosce limiti, e spesso ti sei cimentato con tecniche “difficili”.

Qual è la tua formazione, sia tecnica che artistica?

In giovane età, seppur per brevi periodi, ho fatto esperienze lavorative pesanti come il facchino, il metronotte, l´operaio di pulizie industriali. Dopo numerose vicissitudini sono approdato a un’importante opportunità lavorativa, collaborare con una ditta di restauro di beni culturali. Per alcuni anni a Ravenna ho avuto il privilegio di salire sulle impalcature dei cantieri di alcuni monumenti importantissimi e di poter osservare e intervenire su manufatti antichi di svariata origine, quali

affreschi, dipinti a olio, stucchi, lapidario, pitture lignee. Oggi posso dire che quel periodo, seppur breve, ha contribuito in maniera decisiva alla mia formazione tecnica. Nei primi anni Novanta, grazie a quell’esperienza, ho sviluppato una particolare avidità nell’analizzare e

un’opera, qual è il processo mentale che segui?

Sono un visionario, di continuo sogno a occhi aperti, appena ho un’idea interessante da sviluppare comincia a galleggiare sulle altre in maniera ossessiva, nasce così un periodo di riflessione dove le mie idee rimangono nel limbo, come ibernate, a volte anche per anni.. Il lavoro delle copertine è nato in maniera molto articolata. L’idea iniziale prevedeva di realizzare piccoli interventi tautologici con tecniche svariate, quali micromosaici sagomati, sculturine, piccoli quadri ad olio, sbalzo ecc.

Poi ho pensato al supporto in cui ambientare questi microinterventi preziosi - e la carta “usa e getta” dei quotidiani mi sembrava prestarsi bene al cortocircuito. Solo all’indomani della prima rivista fatta, ho appurato con sorpresa che il cartaceo, rinnovandosi continuamente, suggerisce interessanti tematiche da sviluppare,

così ho cominciato a costruire micromosaici calibrati su misura, partendo appunto dalla ricerca dell’immagine ad hoc.

Nel lavoro delle copertine ricerco ovunque mi trovi immagini per affinità di tematica, penso a quelle con personaggi mascherati, ai miti del cinema, dello sport, della politica, ecc.

Non ti nascondo il mio entusiasmo quando dal giornalaio scopro un´immagine che ha i requisiti per poter essere sviluppata. I processi mentali a volte sono difficili da decifrare, perché quando cambio tecnica cambia anche il mio approccio mentale, comunque cerco di sottomettere le mie idee alle tecniche, mai il contrario.

Da tanti anni evito di costruire il lavoro attraverso la seduzione e bellezza dei molti materiali che conosco, anzi a volte cerco di sforzarmi e di considerare quelli che per mia natura

sento meno, che però possono rivelarsi ottimi per i miei scopi.

Qual è l’elemento scatenante che mette in moto le idee e ti permette di raggiungere il risultato voluto?

Tempo fa avrei risposto “il mio stile di vita”; sono un´amante di situazioni forti e suggestive che possono stimolare la mia fantasia: battute di caccia e pesca, o passeggiate romantiche, andar nei boschi a raccogliere funghi, tartufi, erbe e bacche selvatiche. Oggi purtroppo non ho più tempo per vivere la natura come vorrei quindi anche il mio lavoro ha dovuto trovare altri stimoli.

Penso che il risultato di un’opera riuscita bene è un dato certo che si affina negli anni. L´esperienza non basta mai, ma avere grande esperienza significa avere certezza di risultati.

Il fascino dei capolavori in arte è celato dietro l’immagine, parlo di pratiche delicatissime ed empiriche, spesso alchemiche e dei rischi annessi. Durante le complicate fasi di lavoro l’imprevisto è sempre in agguato, a volte mi sento come un pilota di Formula Uno che parte e non sa se arriva; può accadere di tutto, prima la pioggia, poi il sole, allora devi cambiare gomme, stile di guida ecc, poi ritorna la pioggia e di nuovo devi adattare il lavoro a nuovi imprevisti, ai cambiamenti, perché il rischio è enorme, sbagliare o andare fuori strada, un lavoro sempre col fiato sospeso.

Che rapporto hai con il mondo contemporaneo, che cosa ti colpisce in un’immagine al punto da trasformarla in un’icona bizantina?

Anche se può sembrare assurdo, il mosaico ha valenze contemporanee e antiche al tempo stesso. Il fattore tempo è molto importante nell’opera musiva, mentre al confronto la

tecnica della pittura, nei secoli, si è accelerata spaventosamente. Per rendere l’idea pensa alla frustrazione di Tiziano nel constatare che il suo allievo Tintoretto eseguiva diversi ritratti al mese e a lui non bastava un anno per realizzarne uno...

Cambiando sistema operativo si modifica la struttura della forma, la consistenza degli impasti di colore, la velocità della pennellata.

Altro fattore determinante che aumenta il divario tra tempo pittorico e tempo musivo è l’analisi formale; il colore a olio fu un’invenzione studiata appositamente per indagare il microcosmo in maniera ancor più analitica dell’affresco, invece la tessera musiva è un’entità geometrica astratta che obbliga l’artista a considerare l´immagine in termini di

sintesi formale. Aggiungo anche che l’artista che dipinge oggi fatica a costruirsi un suo ben definito immaginario, le botteghe non esistono più, molto si è perso e questo ha complicato il mestiere, il pittore di oggi solitamente non riesce a sganciarsi dall’immaginario fotografico o cinematografico.

Nel mosaico quindi l’effetto finale è più trasformante e permette di trasfigurare l’identità di figure e cose, la tecnica è in grado di iconizzare tutto.

Che rapporto hai con le merci? Che genere di consumatore sei?

Sono un consumatore molto distratto e incosciente, per esempio scambio lo sciroppo per la tosse per un digestivo o il detersivo dei piatti per lo shampoo.

Solitamente le pubblicità non fanno presa su di me come consumatore - come artista sì, infatti sono sempre molto attento nell’osservare i megacartelloni che invadono le città, a volte mi fermo a guardarli con attenzione. Amo più il contenitore del contenuto, però non è una regola, sicuramente con le merci ho un rapporto conflittuale.

Cosa significa per te la “delizia”?

Credo che la delizia sia uno stato di benessere in cui si può trovare la nostra mente, un valore emozionale puramente soggettivo. Siamo tutti più ricettivi verso i sapori forti, gli odori penetranti, le musiche a tutto volume, le sgasate dei motori, l’odore del tartufo, la cioccolata, ma per me la più autentica delizia è una sensazione che scaturisce da delicatezze quasi impercettibili, ad esempio trovo piacevole respirare a pieni polmoni la prima aria del mattino appena entro in un

bosco per assorbire umori d’ogni tipo, mi piace in particolare l’odore di mandorla amara di alcuni funghi non commestibili, oppure il profumo delicato dei fiori d’acacia.

Sensazioni che in città non puoi respirare.

O ancora poter osservare l’altissima qualità pittorica nei quadri di alcuni grandi maestri, come ad esempio La fanciulla con l’orecchino di perla di Vermeer, la delizia in questo caso è data dal tocco magico, sapiente e soprattutto delicato del grande pittore.

Che rapporto hai col packaging, con l’involucro delle merci e degli oggetti in genere?

Sono per me materia costante di studio, mi è successo anche di recuperare negli scantinati merci prive di valore commerciale, in realtà però difficilmente riesco a lavorare su quello che raccatto, forse è una sorta di collezione che

utilizzo per stimolare la fantasia, un desiderio di possesso utilissimo.

Da ragazzo in campeggio durante un’escursione, in Trentino, ricordo di aver trovato una scatola di fagioli della prima guerra mondiale ancora intatta, lo stesso giorno trovammo anche diversi ordigni inesplosi, così i nostri istruttori purtroppo non ci fecero portare nulla a casa - però quella scatola di fagioli mi è rimasta in testa, non so cosa darei per avere ora quel cimelio da mettere in una teca e contemplare.

The Virtuous Visionary Interview with Leonardo Pivi, a visionary artist who has used the ancient and arduous technique of mosaic to make forays into the everyday world.

Marco Senaldi It is hard to pigeonhole the work of Leonardo Pivi, born in Cesena in 1965. After emerging in the early nineties, he went through various artistic phases before achieving a kind of balance seen in the work he has produced recently. This balance is the result of a complicated synthesis of different orientations: on one hand, the return to painting, culminating in so-called “neurotic realism” and, on the other, the oft-quoted revival of the more outmoded classicism.

Pivi’s art has come a long way though it hasn’t entirely managed to avoid falling into these traps, salvaging the best bits along with developing an ability to get to the heart of present reality and extract a genuine truth. Pivi’s work cannot be pinned down - it ranges from monstrous chickens in white marble, to bizarre miniature totems engraved on pebbles or semi-precious stones, from jewel micro-sculptures in gold and gems, to enormous panels of mosaics portraying webs (such as the one he did for the Repubblica underground stop in Milan) to micro-mosaics made using the ancient technique of opus vermiculatum dating from Roman times, whose tiles are just a few millimetres in size- micro-mosaics which the artist has fun mounting on magazine covers or packaging. His work is therefore characterised by a remarkable measure of technical skill, acquired down the years, which, however, never becomes virtuosity as an end in itself- making Pivi, vice

versa, a virtuous artist who refuses to hide behind manual skill and who is not afraid of tackling burning current issues head-on.

It is precisely through this intersection of such opposite realities - a work of sophisticated and exclusive workmanship which imitates the icons of mass-produced goods or images printed a million times on the pages of newspapers - that Pivi shows us a previously unseen dimension, often aspired to by today’s art but rarely achieved. This dimension exists, Pivi gives us material proof and we should not be afraid of defining it as new antitraditional classicality.

Micro-mosaic, painting, marble, even jewels and gold, there is no end to your creativity and you have often tried “difficult” techniques. What kind of technical and artistic training did you have?

When I was young I did brief stints working as a porter, night-watchman, industrial cleaner.

After many vicissitudes I was given the opportunity to work for a company restoring works of cultural heritage.

For a long time in Ravenna I was lucky enough to climb scaffolding erected on the sites of some extremely important monuments and to observe and work on ancient artefacts of various origins, such as frescos, oil paintings, stuccoes, inscriptions on stone, paintings on wood.

I can now say that that period contributed in a decisive fashion to my technical training.

In the early nineties, thanks to that experience, I developed a particular keenness for painstakingly analysing and checking the material I was to work on.

As an artist I began, at the end of the eighties, to hold my early exhibitions in Bologna, where I went to the Academy of Fine Arts and where I had the pleasure of exhibiting at the Neon Gallery, sharing many important events with artist friends of my generation who are now very well-established.

What is the element which triggers ideas and allows you to achieve the result you were aiming for?

Some time ago I would have answered “my lifestyle”. I love dramatic, redolent situations which can simulate my imagination: hunting or fishing expeditions, romantic walks, picking mushrooms, truffles, wild herbs and berries in the woods.

Unfortunately, I no longer have enough time as I would like to dedicate to nature and so my work too has had to seek other stimuli.

I think the effect of a successful work is a certainty which is fine-tuned in time. You can never have enough experience but having a lot of experience means being certain of results.

The appeal of artistic masterpieces is hidden behind the image. I am referring to extremely delicate and empirical, often alchemical practices and the risks connected to them. During the complicated phases of a project the unknown factor is constantly lurking, and sometimes I feel like a Formula One racing driver who sets off not knowing whether he will reach the finishing line.

Anything could happen - first it rains, then the sun comes out, so you have change the tyres and your driving style etc., then the rain comes back and you have to adapt to fresh, unforeseen circumstances, to changes, because there is enormous danger. You could make a mistake and go off the road. You constantly have bated breath.

What relationship do you have with the contemporary world? What is it about an image that strikes you to the extent you transform it into a Byzantine icon?

Although it may seem absurd, mosaic is simultaneously contemporary and ancient.

The time factor is very important in mosaic work while, in comparison, painting technique down the centuries has speeded up in a frightening way.

In your works we see the desire to mix completely different techniques and materials (I am thinking of the mosaic “covers”). How do you ultimately define a work? What mental process do you follow?

I am a visionary and I daydream all the time.

As soon as I have an interesting idea I want to develop it begins to float on top of the others maddeningly. This is followed by a period of reflection in which my ideas remain in limbo, as though they were in hibernation, sometimes for years… The work on covers began in a number of different ways. The original idea involved making small tautological works using various techniques, such as moulded micro-mosaics, little sculptures, small oil paintings, embossing etc.

Then I thought about the medium in which I would place these precious micro works- and the disposable paper of newspapers seemed to me to be perfect for this short-circuit. It was only after I made the first magazine that I discovered to my surprise that the paper, constantly renewing itself, suggests interesting themes for development, so I began to produce made-to-measure micromosaics, beginning with a search for an image ad hoc.

For my work on covers I keep an eye out for images with similar themes, such as those of masked characters, film, sports, political legends etc., wherever I happen to be. I don’t attempt to hide my enthusiasm when I find an image in the newsagents which has the potential to be developed. My mental processes are sometimes hard to decipher because when I change technique my mental approach changes too.

However, I try to subjugate my ideas to technique.

It’s never the other way around. For many years I have avoided basing my work on the seduction and beauty of the many materials I know. Indeed, at times I force myself to consider materials which I am naturally less drawn to, but which might better fit my purpose.

discovering that his pupil Tintoretto produced several portraits a month while it took him over a year to produce just one…

By changing your working method you change the structure of the form, the consistency of the paints, the speed of the brushwork.

A further decisive factor which widens the gap between painting time and mosaic time is the formal analysis. Oil painting was deliberately invented to investigate the microcosm in an even more analytical way than the fresco, while the mosaic tile is an abstract geometrical entity which forces the artist to consider the image in terms of formal synthesis. I will further add that the artist painting today has trouble creating his well-defined set of images. There aren’t any workshops any more, a great deal has been lost and this has made the business of art complicated. Nowadays painters are usually unable to break away from photographic or cinematic images. In mosaic therefore the final effect is more transforming, enabling one to transfigure the identity of figures and objects. The technique can make an icon of anything.

What relationship do you have with consumer goods? What kind of consumer are you?

I am a very distracted and irresponsible consumer.

For example I mistake cough syrup for liqueur or washing up liquid for shampoo.

As a consumer I am not usually influenced by advertising while as an artist I am. Indeed, I am always very careful to observe the huge billboards that are invading our cities and sometimes I stop to focus on them. I prefer the container to the contents. However, I don’t have any hard and fast rules. I certainly have a complicated relationship with consumer goods.

What does “delight” mean to you?

I believe delight is a state of mental wellbeing,

a purely subjective emotion. We are all more receptive towards strong tastes, penetrating odours, loud music, revving engines, the scent of truffles and chocolate but, to me, real delight is a sensation triggered by almost imperceptible delicacies. For example, I take pleasure in breathing in the early morning air when I go into a wood and filling my nostrils with the scent of all kinds of things. I especially like the bitter almond odour of some toadstools, or the delicate perfume of acacia flowers. These are things you don’t find in the city. Or observing the extremely high artistic quality of the paintings of great masters, such as Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. In this case the delight comes from the magical, skilful and, above all, delicate touch of the great artist.

What relationship do you have with packaging, with the packaging of consumer goods and objects in general?

I study them constantly. I have even gone down into cellars to search for things which have no commercial value. In reality though I find it hard to work on things I have picked up randomly. Perhaps this act of collecting things is something I use for stimulating my imagination, a yearning to own things which comes in useful.

When I was a boy camping in Trentino I remember going on a hike and finding an unopened tin of beans dating from the First World War. On the same day we also found several unexploded bombs so our teacher unfortunately wouldn’t allow us to take anything home with us. I never forgot that tin of beans though. I don’t know what I wouldn’t give now to have that relic and display it in a glass case.

I miei amici scoppiano a ridere quando dico che sto lavorando alle mozzarelle. Vedono una scena surreale: un quarantenne al computer davanti a immagini di mozzarelle trendy, aerodinamiche, metallizzate; modelli tridimensionali di burrate e trecce; sezioni di scamorze...

Se ridono non hanno tutti i torti, ma l’effetto comico dipende da un equivoco molto diffuso.

Di vero, nel quadro, c’è solo il quarantenne al computer.

L’immaginario legato alla parola “design” è popolato di sedie, cucine, automobili, abiti e in generale di oggetti (costosi) attraverso i quali il designer realizza una personale e astratta concezione del “bello” o afferma un insieme più articolato di valori riconducibili alla sua firma, a una scuola o ad uno stile. È questo il mondo a cui ci si riferisce quando si parla di “Design” tout court, di “oggetto di design”, di “design italiano”. Un mondo da cui la mozzarella è senza dubbio esclusa. È evidente che il progetto di un prodotto alimentare richiede un approccio completamente diverso. Non si tratta di “disegnare” la mozzarella, di dare una forma astrattamente “bella” e originale al formaggio o al packaging e tanto meno si tratta di esprimere attraverso questo l’identità del designer.

Le caratteristiche visive del prodotto sono solo uno degli aspetti del progetto e non sempre il più importante. Il Food Industrial Designer interviene direttamente o indirettamente su un sistema molto complesso di fattori che determina l’identità e la credibilità del prodotto: forma,

sapore, consistenza, dosaggio, packaging grafico e strutturale, occasioni e modalità di consumo, vissuto del prodotto (la mozzarella) e vissuto del brand, canali di vendita, prezzo.

Il nostro obiettivo, quando lavoriamo sull’innovazione alimentare, è di armonizzare tutti questi fattori in un’idea nuova, convincente e interessante.

Come si vede non c’è molto da ridere. Per noi l’esercizio creativo è molto meno libero di quanto non lo sia per un designer di sedie (non si legga in questo confronto un giudizio di valore: la libertà creativa è tutt’altro che facile da gestire e da meritare) e l’esigenza di conciliare molte variabili restringe il nostro campo d’azione, soprattutto se esso si combina con i vincoli imposti dalla tecnologia del cliente.

D’altronde questo è il nostro talento: giocare nello stretto, individuare potenziali aree d’innovazione anche in settori apparentemente saturi.

La mozzarella, ad esempio. Un tipico “progetto kamikaze”, come a noi piace definire i brief tosti, quelli che non lasciano vie di scampo al designer. La mozzarella è un prodotto con un vissuto molto preciso e legami fortissimi con la tradizione, soprattutto in Italia. Sembrava impossibile generare innovazione in un mercato così conservatore. Eppure in seguito a un’attenta analisi delle modalità e delle occasioni di consumo e delle possibilità di evoluzione tecnologica, sono emerse un gran numero di opportunità, che si sono tradotte in una ventina di nuove idee di prodotto. Voglio fare due

esempi, anche se sono costretto a tenermi sul vago per ovvi motivi di riservatezza.

Primo: nelle mense e nei selfservice, le mozzarelle industriali sono sempre presenti. Sono preferite alle mozzarelle artigianali sia per ragioni igieniche che di conservazione: sono impacchettate una a una e la data di scadenza, riportata sulla confezione, allo stesso tempo rassicura il cliente sulla freschezza del prodotto e facilita l’operatore nel trattamento corretto delle rimanenze.

La presenza del liquido di governo in cui sono immersi i bocconcini, però, crea un impaccio durante il consumo che in questi contesti è particolarmente sentito: gli spazi sul vassoio sono stretti e non vi è uno scarico a disposizione per scolare il liquido.

Sorprendentemente il mercato non ha risposte soddisfacenti al problema. Noi abbiamo lavorato proprio su questo ed elaborato un’idea di prodotto basata su un imballaggio che consente al consumatore di togliersi dall’imbarazzo con un semplice gesto. È un prodotto pensato per le mense, ma è anche in grado di estendere il consumo della mozzarella ad altre occasioni come l’on the go, o come la pausa pranzo in ufficio.

Secondo: la Ricerca e Sviluppo del nostro cliente sta lavorando su una tecnologia interessantissima, che comporterebbe grandi vantaggi sia in termini di efficienza produttiva, sia in termini di servizio per il consumatore.

Ha il limite, però, di “snaturare” l’immagine della mozzarella e di

quarantenne non si scoraggia.

Intanto gli anni passano.

spiegare ai miei amici che non si tratta di disegnare mozzarelle cromate e aerodinamiche, tuttavia essi potrebbero obiettare che allora si tratta “soltanto” di disegnarne la confezione. Il pregiudizio è contenuto in quel “soltanto”, che esprime una visione piuttosto riduttiva del packaging design. Ma il

generare forme molto regolari che si allontanano troppo dal vissuto del prodotto. Noi, secondo un’attitudine tipica dell’Industrial Design, abbiamo fatto di questo limite un punto di forza. Con una combinazione felice di forma e technical packaging abbiamo definito per il prodotto un’identità completamente nuova che, mantenendone intatti consistenza e sapore, lo sottrae al confronto diretto (e perdente) con la mozzarella artigianale e lo rende desiderabile perché è bello da presentare in tavola e pratico nel consumo.

In entrambi i casi abbiamo messo al centro del progetto le “funzioni di servizio” del prodotto, cioè quelle funzioni che aiutano il consumatore a utilizzarlo (mangiarlo o presentarlo) in determinati contesti. Nella qualità del servizio risiede una parte rilevante del valore del prodotto alimentare industriale. Inoltre, consideriamo il technical packaging una parte integrante del prodotto, non solo il vestito o il contenitore della “cosa che si mangia” o “che si beve”.

L’esperienza che il consumatore fa del prodotto non si risolve nel semplice atto di mangiare o bere, ma si estende all’intero complesso di azioni in cui si esplica la sua relazione con il prodotto stesso: trasportare, aprire, versare, dosare, scolare, presentare, richiudere, conservare, gettare.

Queste ultime considerazioni mi danno modo, in chiusura, di scardinare un altro pregiudizio piuttosto diffuso sul nostro lavoro: se sono fin qui riuscito a

Federico Casotto My friends start laughing when I say I am working on mozzarellas. They envisage a surreal scene: a forty year old at the computer staring at trendy, aerodynamic, metallic images, three-dimensional models of burrate and trecce; sections of scamorza… I can’t entirely blame them for laughing, but the comic effect is the result of a widespread misunderstanding.

The only part that is real is the forty year old sitting at the computer.

The word “design” conjures up images of chairs, kitchens, cars, clothes and (expensive) objects in general, through which the designer creates a personal and abstract concept of “beauty” or establishes a larger set of values which can be traced to his label, or to a school or style. This is the world we refer to when we talk about “Design” tout court, “design objects” and “Italian design”.

A world from which mozzarella is definitely excluded. It is clear that the design of a food product calls for a completely different approach. It is not a question of “designing “ the mozzarella, of giving the cheese or packaging an abstractly “beautiful” and original form, let alone a matter of expressing the designer’s identity through it. The visual characteristics of the product are just one of the aspects of the design and are not always those which are most important. The Food Industrial Designer acts directly or indirectly on a very complex system of factors which determine the product’s identity and credibility: shape, flavour, consistency, dosage, graphic and structural packaging, consumption occasions and modalities, product (the mozzarella) image and brand image, sales channels, price. Our objective, when we address food innovation, is to harmonise all these factors in a new, persuasive and interesting concept.

As you can see there isn’t a great deal to laugh about. For us the creative act is less free than it is for a chair designer (don’t mistake this for a value

judgement: creative freedom is anything but easy to cope with) and the need to reconcile many variables limits our field of action, above all if it is combined with the constraints dictated by customer technology. On the other hand this is where our talent lies: acting within narrow constraints, spotting potential areas for innovation even in apparently saturated sectors.

Mozzarella, for example. A typical “kamikaze project” as we like to define tough briefs, those which don’t leave any easy way out for the designer. Mozzarella is a product with a very specific image and extremely close ties with tradition, above all in Italy. It seemed impossible to generate innovation in such a conservative market.

Yet, after a careful analysis of consumption modalities and occasions and the possibilities of technological evolution, a large number of opportunities emerged which translated into approximately twenty new design concepts.

I would like to give two examples, although I am forced to keep things vague for obvious reasons of confidentiality.

Firstly, industrial mozzarellas are always to be found in canteens and self-service restaurants.

They are favoured over other mozzarellas for reasons both of hygiene and preservation. They are packaged one at a time and the expiry date, printed on the packaging, simultaneously reassures the customer of the product’s freshness and makes it easier for the operator to dispose of the surplus properly.

However, the brine in which the bite-sized mozzarellas are steeped creates a problem during consumption which is particularly exacerbated in these circumstances. There is very little space on ones tray and nowhere to drain off the liquid.

Surprisingly the market has no satisfactory answers. This is precisely where we have stepped in to develop a concept based on a packaging which allows the consumer to solve the problem by

means of a simple gesture. It is a product conceived for sale in canteens but may also mean mozzarellas can be consumed on the go or during the office lunch break.

Secondly, our customer’s Research and Development department is developing extremely interesting technology which would bring huge advantages in terms of both production efficiency and consumer service. Its disadvantage is that it distorts the image of mozzarella by generating extremely regular shapes which diverge too greatly from the product’s image. Applying a talent which is typical of Industrial Design we have turned this disadvantage to our benefit. Using a happy combination of shape and technical packaging we came up with a whole new identity for the product which, keeping its consistency and flavour intact, removes it from a direct (and losing) comparison with other mozzarella and makes it an object of desire as it looks good on the dining table and is practical to consume.

In both cases we placed the product’s “service functions”, that is those functions which help the consumer to use it (to eat or present it) in certain contexts, at the core of the design. An important

aspect of the product lies in the quality of the service and not just in the attire or container of “what you eat” or “what you drink”. The consumer’s experience of the product is not limited to the simple act of eating or drinking but involves the whole series of actions that express his relationship with the product: transporting, opening, pouring, measuring, draining, presenting, closing, keeping, throwing away. These final considerations allow me to debunk another myth regarding our work which is somewhat widespread. While I have so far managed to explain to my friends that it isn’t a question of designing chromium-plated and aerodynamic mozzarellas, they might anyway object that in that case it is “merely” a matter of designing the packaging. Their prejudice is summed up in that word “merely ” which expresses a rather restrictive view of packaging design. But this forty year old is by no means discouraged.

And the years continue to pass.

Cartoni di Lusso Il packaging come concept, spunto e pretesto per parlare di lusso e di design. È questa l’operazione ideata da Lago - azienda padovana che produce sistemi e complementi d’arredo - per presentare, durante lo scorso Salone del Mobile, la sua nuova collezione.

Ad allestire lo stand, infatti, era una scenografica parete composta da decine di scatole di cartone, di dimensioni variabili, stampate in superficie con decori raffiguranti vasi cinesi, libri preziosi, cornici e oggetti di lusso. Questi “preziosi cartoni”, disegnati da Moya Kuznik e Syd Hausmann e denominati Object Deluxe, vogliono giocare ironicamente sul contrasto “materiale povero versus immaginario sfarzoso”e sono stati ideati come prodotti destinati ai punti vendita Lago.

L’attenzione al mondo dell’imballaggio e al riciclo, per questa azienda non è nuova, lo sgabello Ricciolo, infatti, oggetto totalmente precario, provocatorio e curioso, era già stato realizzato utilizzando gli scarti degli imballi.

Luxury Cartons Packaging as concept, inspiration and pretext for talking about luxury and design. This is the operation conceived by Lago - Padua based concern that produces furnishing systems and complements - for presenting its new collection during the Salone del Mobile of Milan. Their stand in fact featured a scenographic wall made up of dozens of cardboard boxes of various sizes, surface printed with decorations depicting Chinese vases, precious books, cornices and luxury objects. These “precious cartons”, designed by Moya Kuznik and Syd Hausmann and denominated Object Deluxe, wish to ironically play on the contrast “humble material versus sumptuous imagery” and have been created as products for the Lago salespoints. This company’s attention to packaging and recycling is not new, see for example their Ricciolo stool, a totally precarious, provocatory and curious object, made from packaging waste.

Tra i tanti meriti del film-documentario Mondovino, di Jonathan Nossiter (Canada 2004), oltre al fatto di essere girato nel ruvido stile “in diretta” al modo del miglior Michael Moore, c’è anche quello di porre la questione di che cosa è diventato oggi il vino.

La domanda sarebbe oziosa, se non si trattasse di una delle bevande più antiche che l’uomo abbia mai creato, presente in tutte le civiltà del mondo, dall’antico Egitto agli USA. Il film non dà una risposta univoca, ma fa chiaramente intendere che siamo di fronte a una evidente scissione: da un lato la forza della tradizione, dall’altro l’innovazione tecnologica e la globalizzazione del cibo.

Le due alternative sembrano inconciliabili: la tradizionale produzione vinicola è legata al territorio (anzi al “terroir”, l’insieme di caratteristiche del terreno agricolo di cui si nutre la vite) ed esige tempi, modi e dedizione particolari; il consumo globale impone innovazione e accelerazione, anche a scapito della qualità specifica di un prodotto, che, per essere esportato in tutto il mondo deve invece sottomettersi a precisi parametri di gusto “impersonali”.

Chi sceglie la prima alternativa rischia di soccombere non potendo far fronte ai costi sempre crescenti e alla competitività del mercato; chi imbocca

l’altra strada, rischia di dissipare la specificità del prodotto e così di perdere esattamente quegli elementi che invece intendeva valorizzare…

Forse però esiste una terza via, o almeno questa è la strada che alcuni pionieristici produttori hanno scelto di imboccare.

Questa strada si chiama innovazione tecnologica nel rispetto per l’ambiente e per il prodotto, il che significa privilegiare la qualità più che la quantità, e avere una consapevolezza reale del fatto che ciò che oggi chiamiamo prodotto vinicolo è in realtà non solo l’alimento che consumiamo, ma un’esperienza polisensoriale, un’immersione in un mondo dove al senso del “gusto” si associano tatto, olfatto, ma anche visione, e, in senso lato, percezione culturale.

Diventa allora interessante fare attenzione a ciò che sta succedendo nel mondo del vino: da bevanda povera, con una ristretta produzione “alta” destinata a un pubblico di intenditori (perlopiù severi signori incravattati), il vino sta diventando protagonista di kermesse popolari (Vinitaly su tutte), star di pubblicazioni ormai diffuse quasi come rotocalchi femminili (si pensi al successo di testate come Wine Spectator),

personaggio centrale di guide o di interi libri (si pensi al saggio filosofico di M. Donà, Filosofia del vino, Bompiani 2003), e infine oggetto del culto di intere classi emergenti….

Ne sono un esempio recente manifestazioni come Move your mind: Choose your wine a cura di Gaia Pasi che, a Montalcino, ha celebrato l'incontro tra le migliori gallerie emergenti di arte contemporanea - da Enrico Fornello di Prato a Francesca Minini di Milano, T293 di Napoli, Zero di Milano - e i viticoltori di alcune delle più prestigiose cantine d'Italia.

Ma già diversi anni fa l’incontro tra produzione di alta qualità ed esperienza artistica aveva avuto luogo grazie all’impegno di uno degli artisti più rappresentativi dei nostri giorni,

cioè Sandro Chia. Nelle sua azienda e dimora del Castello di Romitorio, presso San Quirico d’Orcia, nelle campagne senesi, Chia ha non solo prodotto un Brunello di Montalcino di grande qualità, in collaborazione col produttore Carlo Vittori, ma ha anche pensato di affidarne la “vestizione” a etichette che sono vere e proprie opere d’arte, a firma sua, e di suoi “compagni di strada”, quali Mimmo Paladino.

Il risultato sono bottiglie che uniscono ad un prodotto superiore il plusvalore di un’immagine che riassume i tratti dell’eccellenza italiana - l’amore per il classico e la capacità visionaria di reinterpretarlo secondo i parametri dell’attualità - perché, come afferma Chia stesso “creo il mio vino come creo un dipinto”.

Altro caso è quello del Progetto Ansitz Löwengang, per realizzare il quale il produttore altoatesino Alois Lageder si è spinto ancor più in là. Lageder, oltre ad aver realizzato una struttura tecnologica che impiega risorse energetiche naturali, in applicazione dei principi e dei metodi della biodinamica, considera l’arte contemporanea come una forma di ricerca affine alla ricerca nel campo vitivinicolo. Per questo, nel 2001, ha convocato presso la sede di Tor Löwengang un novero di artisti internazionali, da Maurizio Cattelan a Matt Mullican, a Franz West, chiamati a progettare delle opere site specific, pensate cioè espressamente per il luogo, da installarsi negli spazi interni ed esterni dell’azienda vinicola.

Alcune di queste opere sono state poi effettivamente realizzate, e occorre dire che si sposano perfettamente con i luoghi di lavoro, vi si mimetizzano e forniscono un valore aggiunto al prodotto.

Quest’anno Alois Lageder ha pensato di stringere ancora di più i legami tra il suo prodotto e l’arte, chiedendo ad alcuni artisti di realizzare le etichette dei suoi vini. La sfida consiste nel fatto che non si tratta di riprodurre sull’etichetta opere nate per altre fini, e nemmeno di “etichette d’artista” a tiratura limitata: qui si tratta di attribuire ad ogni vino (si va dal Pinot Grigio al Riesling, dal Merlot al Sauvignon) una caratterizzazione propria, realizzata ad hoc. Gli artisti selezionati sono stati associati a cinque temi primari: Terra (Mario Airò), Luce (Elizabeth Holzl), Vite (Eva Marisaldi), Uomo (Marcello Maloberti), Vino (Luca Vitone), ma la cosa interessante è che, invece di svilupparli in astratto, si sono confrontati con la realtà concreta del lavoro e degli uomini: così, Airò ha realizzato dei frottage sulle pietre presenti nei vigneti, Marisaldi si è ispirata alle venature delle foglie di vite, Maloberti ha creato dei disegni a

partire dalle linee delle mani dello stesso Lageder e dei suoi familiari e collaboratori, Holzl ha realizzato un’etichetta traforata, sinonimo del processo di filtraggio e sedimentazione e, infine, Vitone ha realizzato etichette rotonde che sono delicatissimi acquerelli monocromi dipinti con il vino a cui si riferiscono.

Il risultato è promettente, e dimostra che la collaborazione tra aziende e artisti è possibile, non solo nei termini di un trasferimento diretto di creatività, che viene semplicemente “applicata” al prodotto - ma anche sotto forma di una interazione e di un processo mai concluso, di uno scambio reale e reciproco di competenze, esperienze e saperi.

Marco Senaldi One of the many merits of the film-documentary Mondovino, by Jonathan Nossiter (Canada 2004), as well as the fact it was filmed in the raw “live” style of Michael Moore at his best, is that it draws attention to the question of what wine has become today.

The question would be pointless if we weren’t talking about one of the oldest beverages man has ever created, found in every civilisation in the world, from ancient Egypt to the USA. The film doesn’t give a straight answer but clearly implies that we are faced with an obvious schism.

One hand there is the force of tradition and on the other technological innovation and food globalisation. The two alternatives appear to be irreconcilable. Traditional wine production is linked to the territory (indeed to the “terroir”, the set of characteristics of the agricultural land where the vine is cultivated) and demands special rhythms, methods and dedication while global consumption demands innovation and acceleration, to the detriment of the specific quality of a product which, in order to be exported all over the world has to bow to precise parameters of impersonal taste.

Whoever chooses the former risks going under, unable to meet the rising costs and the competitiveness of the market. Whoever chooses the latter risks dissipating the specificity of the

product and losing precisely those elements which he intended to valorise…

Perhaps there is a third way, or at least this is the route some pioneering producers have chosen to go down. It is called technological innovation with respect for the environment and for the product, which means favouring quality over quantity and being aware that what we nowadays call a wine product is actually not just the product we consume but a multi-sensory experience, an immersion in a world where the sense of taste is associated with touch, smell, sight and, broadly speaking, cultural perception.

It then becomes an interesting exercise to take a closer look at what is happening in the world of wine: from a poor man’s drink, with a limited “high quality” production destined for a public of connoisseurs (mostly stuffy gentlemen in ties), wine is becoming the centre of attention at popular events (Vinitaly for instance), the star of publications which are now almost as popular as women’s magazines (just think of the success of titles such as Wine Spectator), the main topic of guides or whole books (think of the philosophical essay by M. Donà, Filosofia del vino, Bompiani 2003), and, finally, a cult object for an entire emerging classes….

Events such as the recent Move your mind: Choose your wine curated by Gaia Pasi in Montalcino, which celebrated the union of the best emerging contemporary art galleries - from Enrico Fornello of Prato to Francesca Minini of Milan, T293 of Napoli, Zero of Milano - with wine producers from some of the most prestigious Italian cellars are an illustration of this. But already some years ago a marriage between high quality wine and art took place thanks to the efforts of one of the most representative artists of our times, Sandro Chia.

At his winery and home, Castello di Romitorio, near San Quirico d’Orcia in the countryside near Siena,

Chia not only produced a top quality Brunello di Montalcino in partnership with producer Carlo Vittori but also had the idea of entrusting the bottling and labelling, genuine works of art, to himself and his comrade-in-arms Mimmo Paladino.

The result is bottles which combine a superior product with the surplus value of an image that sums up the features of Italian excellence - the love of the classic and the visionary ability to reinterpret it along modern lines- because, as Chia himself says - “I create my wine in the same way I create a painting”.

Another case is that of Progetto Ansitz Löwengang, which led producer Alois Lageder of Alto Adige to go a step further. As well as creating a technological structure using natural environmental resources and applying biodynamic principles and methods, Lageder considers contemporary art to be a form of experimentation similar to experimentation in the field of wine-growing. This is why he invited a group of international artists from Maurizio Cattelan to Matt Mullican, to Franz West, to his company headquarters in Tor Löwengang in 2001 to design site specific works, that is works conceived expressly for the location, to be installed indoors and outdoors at the winery. Some of these works were then actually created and it has to be said they blend in perfectly with the workplace, merging with it and providing added value to the product.

This year Alois Lageder decided to increase the strength of the link between his product and art by

asking some of the artists to create labels for his wines.

The challenge lay in the fact that it was not a question of reproducing works conceived for other purposes on the labels and nor was it a matter of producing “designer labels” in a limited series. Here it was a question of giving each wine (from Pinot Grigio to Riesling, from Merlot to Sauvignon) its own character, created ad hoc.

The chosen artists were linked to five basic themes: Earth (Mario Airò), Light (Elizabeth Holzl), Vines (Eva Marisaldi), Man (Marcello Maloberti), Wine (Luca Vitone). But the interesting thing was that instead of developing them in the abstract they were brought face to face with the concrete reality of the work and the men. Therefore, Airò created frottage on stones found in the vineyard, Marisaldi was inspired by the veins on vine leaves, Maloberti produced drawings beginning with the lines on the hands of Lageder himself, his family members and co-workers, Holzl produced a punched label, a synonym of the process of filtering and sedimentation and, finally, Vitone came up with round labels, which are extremely delicate monochrome watercolours painted with the wine they are meant for.

It is a promising result and shows that companies and artists can work together, not just in terms of a direct transfer of creativity that is simply applied to the product, but also in the form of continuous interaction, a genuine and reciprocal exchange of skills, experience and knowhow.

125 anni di realizzazioni cartotecniche che sposano charme e praticità, inediti accostamenti di materiali inusuali, servizio fortemente orientato al cliente. La bella storia di Cartografica Pusterla, dove l’epopea di famiglia si intreccia con lo sviluppo dell’economia, prima italiana e oggi europea.

Cartografica Pusterla, azienda di Venegono Inferiore (VA) che produce scatole e astucci “belli e ben fatti” per prodotti di alta gamma, festeggia con lo stile che la contraddistingue il traguardo - raro - dei primi 125 anni di attività. Più che guardare con compiacimento al passato, la celebrazione ha offerto lo spunto per fare un bilancio dei cambiamenti strategici, mirati ad assicurare continuità di impresa e nuove prospettive di sviluppo.

Gli investimenti degli ultimi anni (7 milioni di euro in impianti, tecnologia,

spazi, risorse) testimoniano nei fatti la consapevolezza «che la partita del lusso - come ha spiegato il direttore generale dell’azienda, Giuseppe Meana - non si gioca più in un ambito protetto, indifferente ai corsi e ricorsi dell’economia, bensì nel campo aperto di una competizione agguerrita e spesso irriverente delle certezze del passato».

Una crescita responsabile Cartografica Pusterla è ancora oggi una realtà familiare italiana, che però controlla consociate in Francia e Romania. Tre, dunque, i suoi siti produttivi: quello storico iitaliano, dove lavorano 54 persone, quello francese della società Coffrets Creations, con 60 persone, e quello rumeno della

Dacicateca, con 40 addetti.

Il fatturato consolidato 2005 è stato di 20.752.000 euro, realizzato principalmente nei settori vini & liquori (30%), profumi (40 %), cosmetico (16%), bijoux (8%), marocchinerie e moda (6%). Per più del 60% viene realizzato in Francia, Svizzera e Germania, mentre il restante 40% è conseguito in ambito nazionale.

Questi importanti traguardi sono il risultato di un piano di sviluppo, varato nel luglio 2003, che mira a superare i 23 milioni di euro di turnover nel 2008, e che ha messo in campo importanti investimenti sul piano delle strutture produttive.

Per l’upgrading del sito di Venegono Inferiore, che verrà terminato entro il 2007, sono stati stanziati più di 5.000.000 di euro per ristrutturare e ampliare l’area produttiva; sostituire i sistemi computer to film con dei CTP; acquistare una macchina da stampa a 2+6 colori al posto dell’attuale 5 colori, oltre a una nuova autoplatina e una nuova piegaincolla; aggiornare i software gestionali e produttivi; infine, ampliare la zona verde con l'acquisto di un’area adiacente lo stabilimento.

Contemporaneamente anche Coffrets Creation è stata oggetto di investimenti importanti (1.400.000 di euro), che hanno consentito di ampliare ulteriormente la superficie produttiva rispetto ai lavori già realizzati nel 2001, e di installare una nuova linea per l’accoppiamento e il rivestimento di scatole.

«Questi dati - puntualizza Meana testimoniano che, per Cartografica Pusterla, Italia e Francia rappresentano tuttora i mercati di riferimento, in grado di offrire ampi spazi di crescita. Senza per questo togliere fondamento ai nostri progetti di delocalizzare una parte della produzione in Paesi dove il costo della manodopera è inferiore: si tratta di una scelta legata al fatto che, da un lato, il mercato chiede di ridurre i costi e, dall’altro, molti prodotti si realizzano quasi interamente a mano. Tengo però a chiarire che non siamo orientati alla ricerca di soluzioni “mordi e fuggi”, che riguardino solo le fasi di assemblaggio e trovino la loro ragion d’essere nel mero risparmio; al contrario, agendo in una cornice di regole chiare e assumendoci le nostre responsabilità sociali e ambientali, intendiamo creare dei poli produttivi (la Romania è il primo esempio) in grado di crescere autonomamente e generare ricchezza in loco. E questo può accadere anche al di fuori dei confini europei».

Ma l’impegno non si esaurisce qui.

Molto è stato fatto e molto è in corso d’opera per valorizzare, a livello globale, le risorse umane, che restano per Cartografica Pusterla il vero fattore competitivo. «Sono solo gli uomini - puntualizza ancora Meana che, in virtù delle loro capacità di relazione, delle loro competenze e della passione per il lavoro, possono guidare correttamente il cambiamento, riuscendo ad adattare le potenzialità dell’azienda alle esigenze di un mercato che cresce e si modifica in continuazione».

Cartografica Pusterla, the company from Venegono Inferiorie (VA) that produces “fine and finely made” boxes and cases for high range products, celebrates its first 125 years of activity with the style - indeed rare - that distinguishes it. More than a satisfied look on at the past, the celebration was an opportunity for reviewing the strategic changes, aimed at ensuring continuity of enterprise and new growth prospects.

The investments in these last years (7 million Euro on systems, technology, spaces, resources) show that the company is aware «that the luxury market game as Giuseppe Meana, general director of the concern put it - is no longer fielded in a protected environment, unaffected by the ebb and flow of the economy, but rather it is now played out in the open, subject to ever tougher currents that show little respect for the certainties of the past».

A responsible growth Cartofgrafica Pusterla is still today an Italian family concern, though it controls associated companies in France and Rumania. It has three production sites, its timehonored Italian one, where 54 persons work, the French Coffrets Creations with a staff of 60, and the Dacicateca Rumanian site counting 40 employed.

Consolidated turnover for 2005 was 20,752,000 Euro, made mainly in the sectors of wines & spirits (30%), perfumes (40%), cosmetics (16%), bijouterie (8%), assorted leather goods and fashion (6%). What is more 60% of turnover is made in France, Switzerland and Germany, while the remaining 40% in Italy.

These important achievements are the result of a growth plan, launched July 2003, that aims at superceding the 23 million Euro mark in turnover in 2008 and that has entailed the fielding of important investments in the company’s production structure.

Indeed more than 5,000,000 million Euro has been ploughed into the upgrading of the Venegono Inferiore site for restructuring and extending the production area; work will be finished by 2007.

The changes include: the replacing the computer to

film systems with CTP; the purchase of a 2+6 color print machine to replace the current 5 color one as well as a new autoplaten and a new glue and fold; the update of management and production software.

Lastly, the broadening of the concern’s green area with the purchase of an area next to the works.

At the same time Coffrets Creations has also been the object of sizeable investment (1,400,000 Euro), enabling a further extension of the production surface, this on top of the work already carried out in 2001 and also including the installation of a new line for the laminating and the coating of boxes.

«These figures - as Meana states - bear witness to the fact that Italy and France are still Cartografica Pusterla’s main markets, capable of offering great space for growth. Without for this detracting from our plans to delocalise part of production to countries with low labour costs: this is a choice tied to the fact that, on the one hand, the market demands cost reduction and on the other that many products are virtually totally made by hand. I wish to make it clear though that we are not oriented towards “hit and run” situations that only concern the assembly phases and that find their raison d’être in mere saving; on the contrary, acting within a framework of clear rules and taking on our social and environmental responsibilities, we intend creating poles of production (Rumania for one) capable of growing separately and generating wealth in the area they are situated in. And this can also occur outside Europe».

But thier commitment does not stop here.

A lot has been done and a lot is underway in order to valorize human resources at a global level, that for Cartografica Pusterla remains the real competitive factor. As Meana points out «the changes can only be guided by people, who thanks to their capacity to relate, to their skills and knowhow and their passion for work, are capable of managing to suit the concern’s potential to the needs of a market that is growing and that is changing continuously».

Il Design Festival di Amburgo, organizzato dall’associazione Hamburg und Design che si tiene dal 25 al 31 ottobre, è una settimana “full immersion” dedicata al design e alla moda paragonabile al Fuori Salone di Milano, con tanto di mostre ed eventi sparsi ovunque nella città.

Più di cento studi e atelier apriranno le loro porte al pubblico per farsi conoscere e mostrare i loro lavori. In particolare, lo studio ondesign, di Olav Jünke e Francalma Nieddu, creerà - nella galleria del LevanteHaus, un palazzo dei primi del novecento che ospita piccoli negozi e gallerie d’arte - apposite isole di lettura fruibili 24 ore su 24 dove potersi rilassare tra un evento e l’altro leggendo libri sul design, la moda, la comunicazione. Particolari sedute, appositamente disegnate formeranno le isole di lettura: sono le reading (design) islands, sviluppate da Francalma Nieddu e Deanna Comellini (GT Design).

Il giorno dell’inaugurazione, in occasione di un tè pomeridiano, il designer Gabriele Pezzini presenterà il suo libro The warrior designer e il pubblico potrà interloquire con lui e con gli organizzatori dell’evento.

The Design Festival at Hamburg, organized by the Hamburg und Design association and to be held between the 25th and 31st of October, is a week of full immersion dedicated to design and fashion similar to the Fuori Salone at Milan, with numerous exhibitions and events all over town.

More than one hundred studios and workshops will be open for the public to view their work. For instance, the ondesign studio run by Olav Jünke and Francalma Nieddu, in the LevanteHaus gallery, an early 20th century building comprising small shops and art galleries, will specially create reading islands accessible 24 hours a day where people can relax between events and read books on design, fashion and communications. The reading (design) islands will feature particular seats specially designed by Francalma Nieddu and Deanna Comellini (GT Design). On the inauguration day, over an afternoon cup of tea, the designer Gabriele Pezzini will present his book entitled The warrior designer. Visitors are welcome to talk with him and the event’s organizers.

PROGETTI PER UN OLIO “UNICO” Alice Forasassi Un sistema di flaconi e astucci per presentare le principali varietà di oli, estratti da singole cultivar umbre: esempio di come la progettazione, legata a un argomento così circoscritto, porti in realtà a considerazioni di respiro più ampio. L’imballaggio nasce infatti dall’analisi del territorio e dalle strategie di distribuzione tradizionali, per arrivare a definire forme, grafica, immagine coordinata, a sostegno dell’unicità del prodotto.

Per svolgere con coerenza il tema assegnato, l’autrice della tesi, Benedetta Terenzi, ha approfondito gli aspetti generali riguardanti le nuove strategie per l’olio, la sua distribuzione legata alla tradizione e al territorio, la comunicazione, il packaging, la grafica pubblicitaria e l’allestimento promozionale: in una sorta di reazione a catena, spaziando in una multidisciplinarietà articolata, è arrivata a definire l’immagine coordinata del prodotto ipotizzato. Conferendo a Terenzi l’argomento di tesi, il

relatore aveva premesso che «in seno alla progettualità che siamo soliti definire come design for food, il lavoro deve puntare a valorizzare un particolare prodotto oleario, partendo dalla rivisitazione della sua confezione e concludendo con l’elaborazione dei provvedimenti di immagine necessari ad accompagnarlo sui mercati ad alto valore aggiunto».

L’intero progetto è stato costruito intorno alla conoscenza approfondita delle

problematiche (storiche, agricole, di processo, di marketing) nonché alla finalizzazione del design entro gli ambiti del “made in Italy”, evidenziando al contempo i possibili ritorni economici di un’azione così complessa.

In altri termini, questo lavoro di tesi ha riguardato la realtà produttiva, specifica e qualificata della olivicoltura umbra (attestata da 2000 anni di storia), e ne ha enfatizzato le potenzialità.

UNA TESI PER IMMAGINI

Prime ipotesi formali per la famiglia di flaconi Gli oli monovarietali dovrebbero essere contenuti ciascuno in un tipo di flacone, caratterizzato dalla particolare sezione: si forma, così, una famiglia di contenitori (simili ma diversi nei vari formati), coordinati armonicamente fra loro.

I flaconi L’idea che ha accompagnato tutto il progetto è stata quella di riproporre contenitori di terracotta, un materiale che, da sempre, appartiene alla tradizione olearia. Dopo una ricerca che ha evidenziato la difficoltà di lavorare la terracotta in termini “industriali”, Benedetta Terenzi ha optato per una bottiglia di vetro che ricordasse quel materiale. Ecco perché ha scelto un vetro colorato in pasta e sabbiato all’esterno, che apparisse ruvido e più “caldo” del vetro normale. I flaconi sono pensati per essere portati direttamente a tavola (a casa o nei ristoranti); essi saranno immediatamente riconoscibili per la forma, il colore e le scritte (in rilievo) che riportano il marchio “umen” e il nome della cultivar. Le forme delle bottiglie per le singole cultivar sono costruite geometricamente in modo che si riconosca l’appartenenza a un sistema di forme che parta dalla sezione aurea e, più in generale, dalla magia dei numeri: passando per la costruzione kepleriana, il pentagono evolve nell’esagono e nell’ottagono mentre la perfezione del cerchio si moltiplica nelle forme lobate; il triangolo, la forma perfetta, si moltiplica in ognuna delle altre forme.

A sostegno della specificità Per evidenziarne le caratteristiche e collocarli sul mercato nel più garbato, elegante e convincente ma anche riconoscibile, il packaging da progettare doveva dunque sostenere la specificità del prodotto olio umbro. Si è reso quindi necessario percorrere l’ipotesi della “monocolturalità” del prodotto, così come è già stato fatto da tempo con il vino e così come si fa già, in ogni caso, per la gran parte dei

Le bottiglie hanno proporzioni studiate secondo rapporti matematici: partendo dalla figura perfetta del cerchio (che si ripete e interseca sé stesso) esse costituiscono una famiglia caratterizzata da nove diverse sezioni pure ed essenziali.

La sezione dei flaconi non cambia al variare della capacità; varia invece in modo proporzionale l’altezza. La bottiglia da 750 ml ricorda le proporzioni delle antiche ampolle porta-essenze; diminuendo l’altezza le proporzioni armoniche con cui sono progettate non cambiano. Le bottiglie hanno dimensioni variabili da 750 ml, 500 ml, 250 ml, fino a 100 ml.

Nello svolgimento del progetto, l’ipotesi della produzione di oli monoculturali si è rivelata tanto stimolante da sembrare il vero punto di forza per il rilancio ipotizzato della produzione umbra rispetto alla pluralità di offerte, presenti sui mercati nazionali e internazionali.

Imballaggio: motore di interessi La parte iniziale della tesi ha preso in esame l’oggettistica storica per l’olio e i suoi diversi utilizzi nel corso dei secoli: l’attività ha consentito di raccogliere una vasta documentazione che è stata spunto formale delle scelte progettuali successive.

Sempre seguendo le indicazioni del professor Ubertazzi, Benedetta Terenzi ha dunque lavorato per creare un progetto in grado di accreditare il

design box Umen Marchio (che in realtà è un logo) ed etichetta (che rientrano nello studio di immagine coordinata) hanno voluto richiamare in primis la cultura del prodotto per poi, ricordarne le origini. In particolare, il nuovo marchio coniuga appetibilità e naturalezza, tradizione e lavoro artigianale ma, allo stesso tempo, comunica il senso di contemporaneità e design. L’immagine pensata per l’olio monovarietale umbro è caratterizzata da un lettering forte, desunto dalla radici storiche del luogo, depurato e semplificato per essere immediatamente percepito e riconoscibile.

D’altronde, come afferma Benedetta Terenzi «il destinatario di un progetto di packaging è lo stesso del progetto del designer: il consumatore, che sceglie i prodotti in base a

prodotto sui mercati del mondo, evidenziandone, in forma riconoscibile, le caratteristiche di “italianità”. Il materiale con cui realizzare i nuovi flaconi è stato comunque ricondotto agli stilemi più emblematici della storia di questo prodotto: come noto, l’olio è sempre stato contenuto nel coccio, più o meno dotato di vetrinatura (“giara” in Sicilia, “orcio” in Umbria, Toscana e Liguria).

The packaging has in fact been created following historic research and analysis of the area and of the strategies of traditional distribution, to reach the point of defining shape, graphics, coordinated image in support of the unique nature of the product.

Alice Forasassi) In order to successfully tackle the subject set for her thesis, Benedetta Terenzi went into the general aspects concerning the new strategies for food oil, its distribution associated tradition and the territory, communication, packaging, advertising graphics and the establishing of promotional undertakings: in a sort of chain reaction featuring a multidisciplinary approach, Benedetta has successfully managed to define the coordinated image of the said product. Assigning Terenzi the subject of her thesis, her supervisor stated that «along with an approach to the project that we are used to defining as design for food, the work has to aim at valorising a special oil product, starting off from the redesign of its packaging and concluding with the devising of undertakings to promote its image accompanying the launch on the market of a high added value product».

The entire project entailed the gathering of knowledge and indepth study of the subject from the historical-, agricultural, processing and marketing side, leading to the design of a

specifically Italian product, all this with an eye to the economic returns of the entire action.

In other words, the thesis covers the problems of Umbrian olive growing qualified as it is by 2000 years of history, highlighting the extraordinary potential of the same.

Supporting its specific nature To highlight its characteristics and ensure its effective launch on the market while underlining elegance and refinement, the packaging to be designed has to embody the quintessential nature of Umbrian oil. Hence as was done time back for wine and as is the case for most products of a recognised origin, to credit the product on the markets of the world the monocultural approach was adopted, doing everything to emphasise the prevailing features of its Italianness. The material used to create the new flacons is emblematic of the history of this product: as is known oil has always been contained in jars, to a greater or lesser extend glazed (“giara” in Sicily, “orcio” in Umbria, Tuscany and Liguria).

The main objective of Benedetta’s thesis was consequently to conceive a family of containers to credit and enhance specific varieties of oil on the market, with a design steeped in the culture and the history of the product: the result not only features in terms of design but also as food packaging. And in fact Benedetta Terenzi herself states «the addressee of the design project, the consumer, chooses the product on the basis of self-identification. Here packaging (“cladding” of the product) can play a strong role creating, transforming or raising the image and people’s imagination of the selfsame product. If the evolution of food packaging is strictly related to changes in custom (and, viceversa, its influence on the same), creativity is only part of the problem that, though is as ever the same: attributing added value to the product».

First formal hypotheses for the family of flacons The monovarietal oils have to be each contained in a type of flacon, featuring a special section: thus constituting a family of containers (similar but different in their various formats), harmoniously coordinated with each other.

height. The 750 ml bottles follow the proportions of the ancient ampoules for containing essences; reducing their height the harmonic proportions of their design remain the same. The bottles are of sizes that vary from 750 ml, 500 ml, 250 ml, up to 100 ml.

The flacons The principle purpose of the oil flacon is to ensure that the organoleptic and sensorial aspects of the product remain unchanged for as long as possible.

The idea that accompanied the entire projects was that of reproposing containers in terracotta, a material that has always been part of the oilmaking tradition. After a study that highlighted the difficulties of working terracotta in “industrial” terms, Benedetta Terenzi opted for a glass bottle resembling terracotta in its appearance. This is why she chose glass colored in the mix and sanded on the outside, that appears rougher and “warmer” than normal glass. The flacons have been conceived to be directly placed on the table (at home or in the restaurant); they are immediately recognisable in terms of shape, color and wording (in relief) and bear the brand “umen” and the name cultivar. The shape of the bottle for the single cultivar has been geometrically constructed so that one recognises their belonging to a system of forms that start off from the golden section and more in general, from the magic of numbers: going by way of Kepler’s construction, the pentagon turns into a hexagon and then into an octagon while the perfection of the circle is multiplied in lobe forms; the triangle, the perfect shape, multiplies within all the other forms (6). The bottles have proportions following mathematical ratios: starting off from the perfect figure of the circle (that repeats and intersects itself) they constitute a family featuring nine different pure and essential sections.

The section of the flacons does not change varying their capacity; what changes in proportion is the

Umen Brand (that in actual fact is a logo) and label (that come under the study of coordinated image) first and foremost allude to the cultural background of the product, conjuring up its origins. In particular the new brand combines taste with naturalness, tradition and craftwork while at the same time communicating an idea of contemporariness and design. The image devised for Umbrian monovarietal oil features a strong lettering, drawing its historic roots from the area, though purified and simplified to make it immediately perceivable and recognisable.

Note - The article is based on the results of the design thesis by Benedetta Terenzi (who attained her degree with full marks November 2005 at the Faculty of Architecture of the Università degli Studi, Florence) with the title “Umen: the gold of Umbria; system of containers for valorising traditional monovarietal oils”.

The thesis was presented by Alessandro Ubertazzi, professor of Industrial Design. In 2004, before taking her degree, Terenzi received a “mention of honour” at the Competition for Ideas on cellulose packaging organized by Comieco and attended the courses of Envase y Emballage at the University Polytechnic of Valencia.

It should be stated that, in choosing the technology for the creation of the flacons made, the consultancy provided by the AVIR SpA glassworks, along with the company Cerve (specialised in the finishing and the personalisation of the glass products) was of great help.

A chi non piacerebbe vivere in un reame in cui scorrono fiumi di cioccolata, i fiori sono piccoli dolci canditi, e la carta da parati è decorata con frutti che si possono leccare? Questo è il delizioso regno di Willy Wonka creato da Roald Dahl, celebre scrittore inglese di libri per l’infanzia. Un mondo che è già parte del nostro immaginario anche grazie a due film che a questo luogo dei piaceri del palato hanno dato concretezza visiva, lo “storico” Willy Wonka e

la fabbrica di cioccolato (Willy Wonka and the Choccolate Factory, Usa 1971) di Mel Stuart, con un istrionico Gene Wilder nei panni del mago del cioccolato, e La fabbrica di cioccolato (Charlie and the choccolate factory, Usa/Gb 2005) di Tim Burton, con lo stralunato Johnny Depp a dare vita a quell’enigmatico personaggio che è Willy Wonka.

Il pretesto narrativo è dato dal fatto che Wonka ha nascosto nell’incarto di cinque tavolette di cioccolato altrettanti biglietti d’oro che permetteranno, ai fortunati bambini che li troveranno, di visitare il suo regno segreto.

In molte scene del film assistiamo

a una sorta di apoteosi del packaging e occorre dire che quello della cioccolata Wonka è realizzato perfettamente ed è assolutamente credibile all’interno della fiction cinematografica. È proprio scartando migliaia di confezioni, con eccitazione, con ansia, al limite di una crisi di nervi, che inizia la gara a chi trova il biglietto d’oro che permetterà l’ingresso alla terra da sogno nascosta dietro gli austeri cancelli neogotici della fabbrica del cioccolato. E l’oro, che da sempre rappresenta il freddo indice economico della ricchezza, diviene il simbolo della realizzazione di un sogno, il colore di una speranza che si compie. In una girandola di sogni

resi realtà e di visioni da sogno, i cinque piccoli protagonisti e i loro attoniti genitori si smarriscono in un universo di scoiattoli che sgusciano noccioline, copiosi fiumi di cioccolato, e i surreali Oompa Loompa, minuscoli esseri dalla pelle color del cacao e dalla folta capigliatura verde menta, che lavorano indefessamente, tra una canzone e un balletto, alla realizzazione

dei dolci più incredibili.

Tuttavia, qualcosa di misterioso si nasconde dietro questo mondo di bontà ai limiti della realtà.

Infatti, al di sotto degli involucri narrativi, la fiaba di Dahl custodisce una sua precisa morale, a cui Tim Burton sa aggiungere il giusto tocco noir.

I cinque bambini che trovano il biglietto d’oro sono destinati non solo a scoprire il mondo dei sogni, ma anche a subire il contrappasso dei loro stessi vizi capitali: sarà così punita

l’ingordigia del grasso fanciullo germanico, ma anche la superbia della bimba egocentrica, la vanagloria della ragazzata ricca e viziata, come pure la stupida arroganza del piccolo genio schiavo della tecnologia… Si salva alla fine solo il protagonista che, grazie alla sua ingenuità, supera le prove “educative” di Wonka - e dimostra che, sotto l’apparenza del sogno, è la verità della propria esistenza ciò che si tratta di scoprire.

Who wouldn’t like to live in a realm where rivers of chocolate flow, flowers are small candied sweets and the wallpaper is decorated with fruit you can lick? This is the delicious realm of Willy Wonka, created by Roald Dahl, famous English author of children’s books.

A world which is already part of our imagination thanks to two films which have made this place of mouth-watering delights tangible, the “legendary” Willy Wonka and the Choccolate Factory, USA 1971

by Mel Stuart with the melodramatic Gene Wilder in the role of the chocolate wizard and Tim Burton’s Charlie and the choccolate factory, USA/GB 2005, with the goggled-eyed Johnny Depp breathing life into the enigmatic character of Willy Wonka.

The narrative pretext is created by Wonka hiding five golden tickets in the wrappers of five chocolate bars, which will allow the lucky children who find them to visit his secret kingdom.

In many scenes of the film we see a sort of eulogy of packaging and it must be said that the Wonka chocolate packaging is made to perfection and entirely plausible in the film. It is by excitedly and anxiously, almost frenziedly, unwrapping thousands of chocolate bars that the race begins to find the

golden ticket which will allow entry to the wonderland concealed behind the austere neo-Gothic gates of the chocolate factory. It is gold, which has always represented the cold economic index of wealth, that becomes the symbol of a dream come true, the colour of a wish fulfilled.

In a whirl of dreams made true and dreamlike visions, the five small protagonists and their dumbfounded parents wander through a world of squirrels shelling nuts, brimming rivers of chocolate and the surreal Oompa Loompas, tiny beings with cocoa coloured skin and bushy mint green hair who work unflaggingly, pausing only for a song and a dance, to produce the most incredible sweets.

However, something mysterious is hiding behind this surreal world of bounty.

Indeed, beneath the narrative shell Dahl’s tale contains a precise moral, to which Tim Burton adds just the right touch of noir. The five children who find the golden ticket are destined not merely to discover the world of dreams but also to suffer the retaliation of their own capital sins. So the greed of the fat German boy and the haughtiness of the egocentric girl, the boastfulness of the rich, spoilt childish prankster and the idiotic arrogance of the little genius who is a slave to technology will be punished.

The only one to escape is the protagonist who, thanks to his naivety, manages to pass Wonka’s “educational” tests, showing that under the guise of a dream it is the truth of ones own existence that is meant to be discovered.
