Nella società contemporanea quasi tutto ciò con cui abbiamo a che fare, prima di entrare di diritto nel variopinto mondo delle “cose”, è stato un’idea nella mente di qualcuno, un disegno su un foglio, un modello di simulazione, un’immagine digitale creata da un software, un’ipotesi in attesa di una realizzazione tangibile.

Tuttavia, per molto tempo, e in molti ambiti, il progettista è rimasto un’entità essenzialmente anonima, senza faccia, un deus ex machina occultato dal nome dell’azienda, sconosciuto ai più, apparentemente inesistente.

Le cose però si sono rapidamente evolute: oggi il progetto è sempre meno anonimo. La firma di un designer, di un progettista, di un creativo, non solo legittima agli occhi dei consumatori l’esistenza dell’oggetto stesso, ma fornisce a quest’ultimo un indispensabile plusvalore semantico.

Anche il packaging, per anni considerato un semplice involucro destinato ad avvolgere, contenere e proteggere, un prodotto industriale orfano di padre e di madre, è sempre più spesso frutto di elaborati disegni firmati da

riconosciuti designer.

Che anche il packaging nasca da una complessa ricerca può rallegrare o impensierire a seconda di come si considera la cosa: da un lato ciò significa una rinnovata attenzione ai dettagli che costellano il nostro universo merceologico, dall’altro si tratta di un fenomeno che sembra portare direttamente alla prevalenza del contenitore sul contenuto.

Con questo numero Impackt mostra come, in taluni casi, i contenitori più banali, come una bottiglia di birra o un flacone di detersivo, possono diventare imballaggi affascinanti e innovativi quando sono pensati e firmati da progettisti ingegnosi e poliedrici. E per rendere manifesta quella “mano invisibile” che pensa e disegna il nostro panorama sociale e merceologico, Impackt ha parlato di progetti imprenditoriali con Marco Roveda, ha raccontato le prodezze editoriali di Artlab e Uovo, ha intervistato designer influenti che hanno sviluppato packaging evoluti o persino paradossali, come Karim Rashid ed Ora-Ïto ed artisti quali Tony Cragg che, a partire dai più umili e maltrattati fra gli imballaggi esistenti, ha saputo creare imperturbabili opere scultoree.

In contemporary society nearly all that we have dealings with, prior to entering by right into the multcolored world of “things”, has been an idea in somebody’s mind, a drawing on a sheet of paper, a model of simulation, a digital image created by a software, an idea awaiting tangible creation.

All the same, for long periods, and in many work environments, the designer was an essentially anonymous faceless figure, a deus ex machina hidden by the company name, unknown to the many, apparently inexistent. However things have evolved rapidly: today the project is ever less anonymous.

The signature of a designer, of a planner, of a creative person, is not only a legitimation of the object itself in the eyes of the consumer, but it gives the same an indispensable semantic surplus value.

Packaging as well, for years considered a simple cladding destined to wrap, contain and protect an industrial product, a parentless orphan, is evermore fruit of elaborate designs created by recognised designers.

That even packaging is born out of a complex study can be a

gladdening or worrying fact according to how one considers things: on the one hand this means a renewed attention to details that fill our universe of merchandise, on the other it is a phenomenon that seems to lead directly to the prevalence of the container over the contained.

With this issue Impackt shows how in some cases the most banal containers, like a beer or a detergent bottle, can become fascinating and innovatory packaging items when they have been designed and signed by ingenious, versatile designers.

And to show this “invisible hand” that thinks and draws our social world and world of merchandise, Impackt speaks of the entrepreneurial projects with Marco Roveda, it tells of the editorial feats of Artlab and Uovo, it has interviewed influential designers that have developed sophisticated and even paradoxical packaging, like Karim Rahid and Ora-Ïto and artist such as Tony Cragg who, starting from the most humble and mistreated among existing packaging items, was able to create imperturbable sculptural works.

Karim Rashid è un designer angloegiziano, cresciuto in Canada e residente a New York. È un progettista sfaccettato e prolifico, ha disegnato di tutto, dai cosmetici ai mobili, ai prodotti per la casa, all’oggettistica, alle lampade, agli abiti. Ha imposto la sua creatività in settori come il design, la grafica, la comunicazione, l’arte, la musica (è persino un applaudito DJ) e i suoi prodotti sono stati usati in film e nei programmi di MTV. Il lavoro di Rashid è apprezzato e ricercato sia dai grandi marchi internazionali (tra cui, solo per citarne alcuni, Sony, Armani, Shiseido, Prada, Issey Miyake, Yahoo!) ma anche da giovani aziende, che fanno del design e dell’innovazione la propria forza vincente, come la californiana Method, per la quale il designer ha creato dispenser e flaconi rivoluzionari nel concetto, inusuali per le forme e l’utilizzo, gradevoli al tatto e alla vista.

Non solo. I suoi progetti sono esposti nei più importanti musei del mondo e in gallerie d’arte. Ha inoltre scritto, pubblicato, insegnato e tenuto conferenze in tutto il mondo.

Karim Rashid si considera un provocatore culturale e non esita a esprimere con forza e convinzione le sue idee sul design, sugli oggetti, sul mondo contemporaneo.

Karim, cosʼè un “progetto di design”?

Anzitutto desidero definire il concetto di design, che non è una decorazione superficiale, non è una composizione bonsai, un dipinto a mano su un vaso per fiori: questo è artigianato. Fare un progetto di design significa creare, dare forma, eseguire e realizzare secondo un determinato piano di lavoro, ideare qualcosa e studiarlo nei dettagli; fare uno schizzo, un disegno, un modello

per uno specifico scopo. È una pianificazione metodologica, non un’operazione casuale. Design significa veramente costruire qualcosa, sviluppare una nuova condizione per questo mondo artificiale. Definisco il progetto di design come qualcosa che deve essere diretto alla completa soddisfazione dei bisogni e dei desideri contemporanei. Il design non deve essere legato agli stili, alla replicazione del passato, ma è lo sviluppo di soluzioni contemporanee al nostro modo di vivere.

Un’azienda che fonda la propria forza sul design e che dà un incarico a un designer, si trova ad avere a che fare con gli aspetti sociali, umani, politici, creativi ed estetici attuali, non del passato. Oggi, nella società dei consumi, non c’è bisogno di molte “cose”, in compenso “desideriamo” molto. Design non significa dunque risolvere problemi, ma trovare le risposte alle nostre aspirazioni poetiche, estetiche, emozionali e culturali. Design significa anche progresso e innovazione ed è fondamentale per le aziende realizzare oggetti che rispondano alle nuove aspirazioni del consumatore.

Se un’azienda non si rinnova di continuo, non può sopravvivere “ai giochi” della globalizzazione, che si sono aperti e sembrano destinati a durare. Non si può più pensare in modo localizzato.

Hai mai avuto un progetto ideale (non necessariamente di design) che in seguito hai potuto realizzare?

Sono molto contento di essere andato oltre il puro ambito del disegno industriale. Faccio mostre d’arte da cinque anni, alla galleria Sandra Gering, da Deitch Projects di e da Elga Wimmer gallery a New York e in parecchi musei come l’Institute of

Contemporary Art inoltre sono stato pubblicato su varie riviste d’arte, ma il mondo dell’arte contemporanea fa fatica a prendermi sul serio, soprattutto per i miei prodotti “democratici” a basso costo.

Sono uno dei pochi designer al mondo che fa anche arte ed è magnifico incrociare vari confini, infatti mi occupo anche di musica, film, moda. Il mio vero desiderio è vedere la gente vivere al ritmo del nostro tempo, partecipare a questo mondo e abbandonare ogni forma di nostalgia, le tradizioni antiquate, i vecchi rituali, il kitsch senza senso.

Pensavo anche che nuove tipologie di prodotti, edifici, automobili, arredi, abiti, avrebbero veramente ispirato una nuova info-estetica digitale. Nel 1967, con mio padre e mio fratello, andavo quasi ogni giorno all’esposizione universale di Montreal e vedevo un mondo pensato e progettato da personaggi come Buckminster Fuller, Sarrarin, Colani, Nelson e altri, e quello era il mondo in cui speravo di crescere. Adesso quel

EMPLOYING KARIM RASHIDʼS INNOVATIVE AND WINNING DESIGN

Se la natura umana spinge a vivere nel passato, cambiare il mondo significa cambiare la natura umana.

Ho capito che il design ha il potere di cambiare radicalmente i comportamenti sociali, politici e umani; che il suo senso è dare una forma al miglioramento, scolpire un mondo a bassa complessità, bello, intelligente e confortevole. Ho capito che design è il termine che esprime la nozione di contemporaneità e che, quando ci riferiamo al design, stiamo parlando di argomenti attuali, che stiamo già dando forma all’adesso.

Quando ero giovane pensavo a un mondo robotizzato, dove tutto poteva essere prodotto senza il faticoso lavoro di manodopera. Un mondo non disgiunto dalla tecnologia, in cui

mondo è qui, ed è anche più bello, più digitale, più viscerale, comportamentale, comunicativo e fantasmatico che mai. Ed io voglio continuare quella missione, in modo che tutti possiamo abbracciare e connetterci al mondo contemporaneo.

Creatività e design. Che metodo segui per sviluppare nuovi progetti?

Ogni progetto segue metodologie leggermente differenti. La metà delle volte le idee mi vengono durante il primo incontro con il cliente, ma siccome credo in un rigoroso processo metodologico, sviluppo anche altre soluzioni, faccio moltissimi schizzi, ricerco e analizzo procedimenti, tecnologie, materiali,

comportamenti umani, per ritornare infine strategicamente alla prima idea. In altre occasioni, prima di arrivare alla soluzione giusta, devo lavorare su vari concept diversi.

Traggo ispirazione da molte cose, dalle parole, dalla filosofia, dall’arte, dalla cultura popolare, dalla musica, dalla vita di tutti i giorni, dai computer e dai programmi digitali, dalla tecnologia. Quest’ultima dovrebbe essere tutt’uno con la produzione, i materiali, il progetto, e comprendere anche l’eliminazione o il riciclo del prodotto. Non è fondamentale che il consumatore sappia tutto ciò, penso infatti che ai suoi occhi l’oggetto debba solo giocare un ruolo umano e che la tecnologia serva solo a renderlo più democratico, a conferirgli poesia e carattere.

Come vedi il nostro mondo futuro?

Il design sarà il nostro scenario universale, senza differenze di luogo o di firma, ma umano, flessibile, organico, intelligente e sperimentale.

Credo che i nuovi oggetti che danno forma alla nostra esistenza siano transconcettuali, ibridi multiculturali, oggetti che possono esistere dovunque, in differenti contesti, che sono naturali e sintetici, ispirati dalle telecomunicazioni, dalle informazioni, dall’intrattenimento, dalla tecnologia, da nuovi comportamenti e dalla produzione. L’attuale cultura degli oggetti cattura l’energia dell’era digitale. Nuovi

procedimenti industriali, nuovi materiali, il mercato globale, da tutto si può trarre ispirazione per il rimodellamento delle nostre vite.

E il packaging? È tempo che tutti i prodotti siano belli e intelligenti, indipendentemente dal loro costo; anche l’imballaggio più economico deve essere risolto nell’estetica! Nel ventunesimo secolo ogni packaging verrà ripensato e ridisegnato. Il packaging è necessario e può fornire alla gente esperienze sempre più seducenti.

Generalmente, per quanto riguarda il settore cosmetico, i flaconi sono più importanti della fragranza stessa, ma in un ambito che vende immaterialità, il package deve “rappresentare” il profumo, comunicarne l’essenza e tutto il lavoro, l’energia e la complessità che c’è dietro la sua creazione. La bottiglia fornisce identità, marca e un’interpretazione materiale a qualcosa che è assai complesso e astratto. Per secoli le bottiglie di profumo sono state abbellite e rese monumentali.

Un tempo tutti i prodotti erano più decorativi e ornamentali di adesso.

Parlavano di ritualità, religione, classi, lusso, regalità, iconoclastia.

Oggi invece, il design “alto” è relegato alla forma di un perfetto rettangolo, ma è noioso, invece abbiamo bisogno di bottiglie che siano il racconto semantico sia del profumo che di un modo di essere.

Nel cosmetic packaging ho lanciato la tendenza di disegnare flaconi che possano essere riutilizzati una seconda volta, invece di essere buttati via. Amo disegnare cosmetici, mi sento molto a mio agio nel farlo, ma sto anche attento a non specializzarmi in questo settore.

Non credo nella specializzazione.

Penso che il mondo non abbia frontiere e mi piace navigare tra tutte professioni del progetto, architettura, arte, design del prodotto, interior design, arredamento, mostre, accessori, moda, etc. Mantenendo i confini sfumati posso affrontare qualunque ambito e tipologia, in modo sempre nuovo e differente e ogni progetto diventa motivo di ispirazione per il successivo.

Fra lʼaltro, hai disegnato i cosmetici monodose di Prada - cosa ci puoi raccontare in proposito?

Il concetto alla base dei monodose di Prada era legato al viaggio, alla nostra esistenza nomade, ad avere prodotti facili da portare, da usarsi solo una volta e puri, perché non contaminati da germi o batteri presenti nell’aria; così se si va in viaggio, o semplicemente in ufficio, o se si sta via solo una notte, si può prenderne solo il quantitativo necessario perfettamente asettico.

Il lavoro è stato lungo e complesso, abbiamo sviluppato 38 diverse piccole ampolle, tubi, fiale, il tutto derivato da schizzi originali non preesistenti. Il progetto è durato tre anni, con grande sforzo di ingegnerizzazione e ricerca.

Qualʼè il ruolo degli oggetti nella nostra società?

In mezzo a questo eccesso di merci e di oggetti, la possibilità di “iper consumare”, di subire la dipendenza dall’immediata soddisfazione del

consumo è pericolosa. Ci circondiamo di immmagini, manufatti e prodotti, per dare senso alla nostra esistenza, per creare memoria, presenza e senso di appartenenza.

Ma siamo diventati consumisti anche per “passare il tempo”, per gratificare il nostro ego. Avremo sempre “cose” nel nostro mondo, quindi non sto suggerendo di astenerci dal consumare o dal possedere, ma solo di essere iperconsapevoli, di amare e di gioire dei nostri oggetti.

Oppure di farne senza. Gli oggetti caratterizzano il nostro tempo, i luoghi, le relazioni. Possono avere relazioni fenomeniche con la quotidianità e con noi stessi, ma allo stesso tempo possono crearci stress, ostacolare la nostra vita e complicarla. Aggiungere qualcosa alla propria vita può significare anche sottrarre o togliere così che, invece di consumare, si potrebbe “de-consumare”: una teoria di addizione tramite sottrazione, dove il meno può essere il plus. E questo non in base a un approccio minimale o riduttivo, piuttosto come sistema per arricchire la propria vita, accrescendo la propria esperienza con le cose belle, quelle più amate, selezionando le nostre scelte per avere una vita più ricca e per realizzare, alla fine, il lusso più importante del ventunesimo secolo: il tempo libero.

Eliminando le banalità e le frustranti perdite di tempo, potremmo trascorrere il tempo a pensare, creare, amare, essere, usando il tempo in modo più costruttivo.

Potremmo anche essere semplicemente più felici, perché adesso siamo bombardati da troppe meschinità, da cose ordinarie, da esperienze mediocri.

Sì, possiamo crescere anche attraverso la sottrazione.

I am proud to go beyond the industrial design field.

I have shown artwork now for five years (Sandra Gering gallery, Deitch Projects NYC, Elga Wimmer gallery NYC and many museums such as the Institute of Contemporary Art) and have been published in art reviews but the art world has trouble taking me seriously especially when you can buy my democratic products for very little. I am one of the few designers in the world that produces and shows fine art and I am proud of crossing that boundary.

I am also making music, film, and fashion. My real desire is to see people live in the modus of our time,

Karim Rashid is an Anglo-Egyptian designer who grew up in Canada and is resident in New York.

He is a multifaceted and prolific designer, he has designed all kinds of things, from cosmetics to furniture, to products for the home, to objects, to lights, clothes. He has imposed his creative touch on sectors such as design, graphics, communications, art, music (he is even a popular DJ) and his products have been used in films and in programs on MTV. Rashid’s work is much appreciated and sought-after by the big international brands (including, to cite but some, Sony, Armani, Shiseido, Prada, Issey Miyake, Yahoo) but also by young concerns that make design and innovation their own winning force, like the Californian concern Method, for which the designer has created dispensers and flacons revolutionary in concept and unusual in shape and use, pleasing to touch and appealing to the eye.

But not only this. His design projects are on show in the most important museums and art galleries the world over. He has also written, published, taught and held conferences around the world.

Karim Rashid considers himself a cultural provocateur and does not hesitate to express his ideas on design, on objects and on the contemporary world with force and conviction.

and craft. To design is to create, fashion, execute, or construct according to plan - to conceive and plan out in the mind, to make a drawing, pattern, or sketch for a specific program. Therefore it is a methodically planned program not an incidental craft. Design is really to develop a construct, a new condition for our manufactured world. I really define design as addressing and fulfilling our contemporary needs and desires. Design is also not about old styles or replicating past decoration but it is about developing contemporary solutions that are about the modus in which we live. A company today that engages designers and is design driven, deals with the social, political, creative, aesthetic and behavioural issues of today, not of the past. Today in a consumer society we do not need a lot but we desire a lot. Design is not anymore problem-solving but a way of developing solutions to these desires, to our poetic, aesthetic, emotional, and cultural aspirations. Design is also the means to progress and innovation, and design is a necessity for companies to develop goods that meet these new consumer expectations. If a company does not perpetually innovate today they cannot survive on the global playing field that has now opened and is here to stay. One cannot think locally anymore.

to participate in contemporary world, and to release themselves from nostalgia, antiquated traditions, old rituals, meaningless kitsch. If human nature is to live in the past, to change the world is to change human nature. I realized that design has the power to radically change social, political, and human behavior, that design was a means to shaping our betterment, to sculpt a world of ease, a world, of beauty of intelligence, and of comfort, I realized that design is a term that describes the notion of contemporaneity, that when we refer to design, we are speaking about addressing contemporary issues, that we are shaping “the now�. When I was young imagined a world that is robotic, where all our objects and products would be produced without laborious hand labor. I also saw a world that would be seamless with technology, a place where we could communicate audibly, visually, in real time everywhere, anywhere, and I saw our environments as intelligent, energetic, hyper aesthetic places. I also believed that new visions of building, cars, products, furniture, clothing, art, would be really inspiring digital, infostethic, and I went to Expo 1967 in Montreal almost everyday with my father and brother and the world I saw being shaped by people like Buckminster Fuller, Sarrarin, Colani, Nelson, and so many others was the world that I was hoping I would grow up into. AND THAT WORLD IS HERE and even more beautiful, more digital, more visceral, more behavioral, more communicative, more phantasmal than ever and I want to continue that mission, so that we all can embrace and engage our contemporary world.

Concerning creativity and design. Do you follow a particular method when designing your products?

Every project has slightly different methodologies.

About 50% of the time the ideas come to me during the first meeting; but I believe in a rigorous process so I try many concepts, many many sketches, researching processes, technologies, material,

human behaviors and strangely I arrive back at the first idea. And with other projects it takes many concepts to get the perfect idea. I am inspired by words, by philosophy, by art, by popular culture, by music, by everyday life, by computers, and digital programs and tools and technology. But technology should now be seamless with the production of goods, the material, with the design process, and with the disruption, and recycling of the product. But it is not imperative that the consumer knows this. I think that the object should just play its human role and the technology take a back seat in making it democratic, high performance, poetic, and behavioral.

How do you see our future world?

Design will be our common landscape where it will not make a difference where something is made, who made it, but instead that it is experimental, behavioral, smart, seamless, soft, and human.

I believe that the new objects that shape our lives are transconceptual, multi-cultural hybrids; objects that can exist anywhere in different contexts, that are natural and synthetic, that are inspired through telecommunications, information, entertainment, technology, new behavior and production. Our object culture can captivate the energy of this contemporary universal culture of the digital age. The birth of new industrial processes, new materials, global markets all lend inspiration to reshaping our lives.

And about packaging?

It is time that all our products become beautiful and smart regardless of cost. Even the cheapest packages should be aesthetic! In the 21th Century every package is being reconsidered and designed. I believe that packaging is very necessary and can bring a greater, more engaging experience to people. Generally bottles in cosmetics become more important than the fragrance. But in cosmetics one is selling

immateriality and there is so much work, expense, and complexity in creating scents, that the package must be the ambassador of that scent and communicate its essence. Essentially one is selling something immaterial that is complex and abstract so the bottles gives a fragrance, identity, brand, and a sense of the material interpretation.

Bottles have been overly embellished for hundreds of years and became quite monumental.

Historically all products were far more decorative and ornate than objects today. They spoke of ritual, religion, class, luxury, royalty, and iconoclasm.

Today high design gets relegated to a perfect rectangle; this is boring, we need a bottle that semantically speaks about the scent and attitude.

I designed many packages that have second functions (and utility) so that you never throw them out. I started this trend in cosmetic packaging.

I love designing cosmetics. I feel very comfortable in this field but I stay broad so that I never specialize in any field. I do not believe in specialization. I think that the world is borderless and I navigate between all the professions of Design, architecture, art, interiors, products, furniture, exhibitions, accessories, clothing, etc.

Blurring these boundaries affords me to see each area, each typology differently and in a new way and each project inspires the next.

What is the role of objects in our society?

In the excrescence of goods, and the system of objects, the possibility of over-consuming, of addition, and immediate satisfaction of consumption is dangerous. We surround ourselves in life with effigies, objects, products, to find meaning in our existence, and to create a sense of memory, of presence, and of belonging. But we also consume to occupy time and to fulfil some strange need of reward and ego. We will forever have objects in our world, and I am not advocating not consuming them but rather being hyper conscious of our things and love and enjoy them. If not, we had better do without them. Objects denote our time, place, and relationship with the outside world and others.

Objects can have a phenomenal relationship with our daily lives and us and at the same time objects can be perpetual obstacles in our life, complicating it, and creating stress. To add more to one’s life, one can also subtract or remove, so that instead of consuming, one “deconsumes�, a theory of addition by subtraction where less can be more. Yet not a minimal or reductive approach but instead, a way of enriching ones life, of increasing experiences through beautiful things, through things that we love, to edit our choices and have a richer life - ultimately creating the most important luxury of the 21st century-: freetime. If we can remove banalities, frustrations, timeconsuming scenarios, with time on our hands we can spend more time thinking, creating, loving, being, and use our time in a more constructive way, taking on a more contributive role.

This could also just make us happier beings in that we are too bombarded with pettiness, with mediocre issues, with banal experiences.

You designed the Prada monodose cosmetics, what can you tell us about that?

The concept of the Prada monodose packaging was the concept of travel, our nomadic existence, and being flexible to carry only one-time use doses that could be never be tainted by the outside air, so there are no germs or bacteria, so that you use perfectly fresh, concentrated, pure amounts that are no more than what is needed. So if you go on a trip you just take what you need, or if you go out at night, or to the office, you only take the right, perfectly sanitized amount. The packaging was complex and we

developed 38 different small ampules, bottles, and vials, that were all developed from scratch being unlike existing packaging. It was a 3 year project with a great deal of engineering and research.

Due mostre diverse - per impostazione, collocazione, livello degli artisti - si aggirano nei dintorni di quella “zona grigia” che sconfina tra gusto condiviso, consumi di massa, forme estetiche, pratiche artistiche.

Raccolti e differenziati, Galleria Peccolo (Livorno)/Galleria Maria Cilena (Milano), 2004, tocca invece il tema dello scarto, del rifiuto, dell’immondizia. In un certo senso, compie un percorso inverso rispetto a quello da cui parte Flirts: se là si parla del desiderio di consumo instillato dalla pubblicità, qui ci si scontra con i cascami a cui lo stesso e identico atto del consumare dà invariabilmente luogo.

In mostra, sei artisti si confrontano per contendersi, si direbbe, la palma del riciclatore più geniale. Tyrome Tripoli aggancia l’una all’altra realtà incomparabilmente estranee oppure combina con umorismo elementi quotidiani come vecchi floppy disk; Giordano Pozzi crea organismi pseudo-naturali con materiali tecnologici di scarto; Corrado Bonomi sa trasformare un tubo di gomma nello stelo di un fiore; Raffaella Formenti tramuta in origami giganti folder, dépliant, giornali pubblicitari e quant’altro; Paola Risoli crea delle piccole scenografie, usando cartoncini riciclati; Albano Morandi circoscrive un frammento per ridargli la dignità perduta.

È proprio da mostre come queste che si deduce la necessità di far dialogare l’arte contemporanea con gli effetti sociali della comunicazione avanzata e delle sue proliferazioni.

Flirts. Kunst und Werbung/Arte e pubblicità che si è tenuta al Museion di Bolzano all’inizio del 2004, si inserisce a buon diritto nell’alveo ormai abbastanza consolidato delle mostre a doppio sguardo: da un lato l’arte, dall’altro il mondo, in questo caso quello pubblicitario. Si tratta di un ulteriore approfondimento di un tema toccato varie volte in passato, con esposizioni di proporzioni più vaste, come Art & Publicité18901990, al Beauburg nel 1990, Avantgarde und Kampagne, alla Kunsthalle di Dusseldorf, nel 1992, Art & Co., al Groningen Museum nel 1993, o ancora Brand New, al Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra, 2000, e di recente Shopping, alla Schirn Kunsthalle di Frankfurt nel 2002, per citare solo le più note.

Tuttavia, il vantaggio di Flirts è quello di mantenere un livello equilibrato e di dare spazio al lavoro meno noto di alcuni outsider. Tra essi, Daniele Buetti con le sue memorabili foto ritoccate di modelle affette da una specie di lebbra della griffe; Macej Toporovicz con l’improbabile pubblicità di vino per vampiri; Maurizio Nannucci con le sue shopping bag genialmente tautologiche che fanno pubblicità alla mostra stessa – mentre quelle di

Dangerous Liaisons Between art, advertising, packaging and waste Marco Senaldi

Two different shows - different in terms of setting, layout, level of the artists - are circulating in that “grey area� where there is overlap between shared taste, mass consumption, aesthetic forms, artistic practises.

Flirts. Art and Advertising that was held at the Museion of Bolzano at the beginning of 2004, rightfully takes its place in the already consolidated riverbed of double view shows: on the one hand art, on the other the world, in this case that of advertising. This is a further going into a subject touched on various times in the past in shows of vaster proportions, like Art & PublicitĂŠ 1890-1990, at the Beauburg in 1990, Avantgarde und Kampagne, at the Dusseldorf Kunsthalle in 1992, Art & Co., at the Groningen Museum in 1993, or again Brand New, at the Victoria and Albert Museum London 2000, and the recent Shopping, at the Frankfurt Schirn Kunsthalle in 2002 to merely cite the best-known ones.

All the same the advantage of Flirts is that of keeping a balanced level and to give space to less-known work of some outsiders. Among these, Daniel Buetti, with his memorable retouched photos of models suffering from a sort of griffe leprosy; Macej Toporovicz with his unlikely ad for wine for vampires; Maurizio Nannucci with his tautological shopping bags that advertises the show itself, while those of

Antonio De Pascale contradict the carefree tone of so many adverts, showing images of catastrophes.

Raccolti e differenziati (Collected and segregated) Galleria Peccolo (Livorno)/Galleria Maria Cilena (Milan), 2004 in turn touched on the subject of waste, of rubbish. In a certain sense it runs in the opposite direction of Flirts if one is speaking of the desire to consume instilled by advertising, here one is up against the dross which the identical act of consumption invariably gives rise to. On show, six artists that one could say square up to each other for the prize for the most ingenious recycler. Tyrome Tripoli brings the two realities that are incomparably extraneous together or humorously combines everyday elements like old floppy disks; Giordano Pozzi creates pseudo-natural organisms with technological waste material; Corrado Bonomi knows how to change a rubber tube into a flower stalk; Raffaelle Formenti makes Origami out of giant folders, brochures, advertising papers and other items; Paola Risoli creates small sets, using recycled paper; Albano Morandi circumscribes a fragment to give it back its lost dignity.

It is shows like these from which one deduces the need to make contemporary art dialogue with the social effects of advanced communication and its proliferations.

di Gaia Spesso il mondo della cosmesi trae ispirazione dalla natura. Di solito, sono i prodotti che si contraddistinguono per le loro formulazioni fresche e delicate, ma, nel caso della giovane azienda greca Korres, anche il packaging riesce a trasmettere al meglio “il respiro della Terra�.

Korres Natural Products è un’azienda che si occupa di bellezza e natura dal 1996, emanazione diretta della prima farmacia omeopatica di Atene.

Attualmente Korres offre una varietà di circa 150 trattamenti per il corpo e per i capelli, prodotti solari e preparati a base di erbe. Gli ingredienti sono tutti di derivazione naturale e di alta qualità, non vengono utilizzati gli oli minerali e i loro derivati (come le paraffine) ma solo oli vegetali compatibili con l’epidermide; anche i composti a base siliconica sono stati sostituiti da speciali combinazioni vegetali che non otturano i pori della pelle ma la nutrono e la ammorbidiscono. Grazie a tecnologie di estrazione avanzate, i principi attivi delle piante restano invariati e garantiscono il massimo dell’efficacia. Questi sono i principali valori su cui l’azienda ha costruito un successo che è in continua crescita ma, oltre alla qualità del prodotto, quello che più colpisce “a scatola chiusa” è il packaging grafico con cui l’azienda veste i trattamenti. Flaconi, tubi e vasetti sono senza orpelli, sobri, essenziali, pensati per espletare adeguatamente le loro funzioni. Le immagini che li ricoprono, invece, non hanno nulla di minimale: sono foto ravvicinate di fiori, semi, frutti, erbe che palpitano di vita propria. Sono incursioni visive nel mondo della natura e nei suoi elementi vegetali e minerali che, visti così da vicino, appaiono altro, diventano geometrie astratte, vibrazioni di colore, movimenti di onde, e fanno pregustare un’immersione nel benessere. Se un imballaggio deve esprimere il suo contenuto, sicuramente quelli di Korres fanno di più, agiscono sulla psiche e trasportano lontano la mente. Eppure non c’è solo natura in quelle foto, ma anche lo sguardo analitico dell’entomologo che scruta negli interstizi del mondo e c’è quello creativo dell’artista, che compone liberamente la materia. Così, questi packaging non sono né naif, né banali

e, allo stesso tempo, rappresentano in modo poetico la fredda distanza della scientificità e il calore della vita.

Qual è il concept e la filosofia che stanno alla base dellʼimmagine Korres?

Ci siamo basati principalmente su un’astrazione minimalista e geometrica; allo stesso tempo tutta l’immagine aziendale punta a esibire la qualità in termini estetici, senza mettere in ombra il carattere naturale del prodotto.

Come vorrebbe essere definita Korres, in quanto azienda cosmetica?

Alla base della filosofia aziendale c’è la combinazione di tre elementi fondamentali. Anzitutto, grazie al nostro background farmaceutico, ogni lavorazione è ben documentata ed è realizzata attraverso procedure di tipo farmaceutico. Poi, tutti i nostri ingredienti sono derivati naturali.

Il terzo elemento è la “gioia” che anima l’intera gamma di prodotti. Il nostro intento è offrire prodotti che facciano bene, attraenti sia dentro che fuori e, quindi, con un buon odore, con una texture piacevole e, naturalmente, con un bel packaging.

Perché nasce Korres? Per soddisfare un mercato specifico, espressione di bisogni determinati?

Korres Natural Products è stata fondata nel 1996, soprattutto in seguito alle richieste dei clienti della farmacia Korres di avere dei prodotti cosmetici naturali e compatibili con l’omeopatia.

Lavorando in quella direzione, quindi,

sono stati utilizzati estratti di piante con proprietà medicali per la creazione di prodotti erboristici sicuri ed efficaci.

Adesso, a dispetto delle fortune commerciali e dell’ampio riconoscimento, lo sviluppo dei prodotti resta “ingredient-oriented” e non “marketing-oriented”.

Partecipiamo assiduamente a programmi di ricerca e sviluppo e cerchiamo nuove idee per sfruttare al meglio le proprietà delle piante in cosmesi.

Chi è il vostro cliente ideale?

Al momento il nostro utente ideale non è determinato dal punto di visto demografico e sociale: ci rivolgiamo in egual misura a uomini e donne di diversa provenienza e ceto, persone che condividono le nostre stesse idee, gli stessi valori e perfino un certo senso estetico: i nostri consumatori sono molti e questa è la ragione per cui questi prodotti sono adottati in mercati apparentemente molto diversi.

Puoi parlarci del tuo ruolo in azienda e di come normalmente lavori?

Sono il direttore creativo e sono responsabile dell’immagine aziendale in toto. Il mio team lavora quotidianamente sul design dei prodotti e sulla comunicazione, sull’organizzazione di mostre e fiere, sul merchandising e persino sulla cancelleria. Di solito con Gorge Korres sviluppo nuovi prodotti o nuove idee e questa collaborazione, alimentata anche da un’amicizia personale, è assai creativa per entrambi.

Hai un ricordo particolare dellʼesperienza Korres?

C’è un buffo aneddoto legato ad alcune nuove brochures e al calendario aziendale, libretti rifiniti in modo volutamente grezzo; all’inizio, però, alcuni hanno pensato che si trattasse di prototipi o che fossero il risultato di un errore di rilegatura, e non il prodotto reale.

Anche grazie al packaging, Korres ha saputo darsi unʼimmagine molto forte: come avete fatto?

La mia influenza è stata certo determinante, ma l’energia di un team di giovani creativi, che lavorano al mio fianco e con cui condivido gli stessi valori, ha reso possibile la nostra affermazione. Assieme a noi, George Korres, il designer Stavros Papagiannis, la mia collega Chrysafis, e tutti i membri di Korres, hanno contribuito a costruire quest’immagine con la loro personalità e il loro senso estetico.

Chi è il fotografo a cui si devono le immagini dʼimpatto dei vostri package?

Il nostro designer fotografo è Stavros Papagiannis, un vero talento. È incaricato di creare l’immagine dell’azienda ed è capace di trasformare una semplice idea in opera d’arte; anzi, le sue foto sono il punto di partenza di ogni concept.

Come direttore creativo, qual è il tuo punto di vista sul packaging nel settore della cosmesi; ci sono nuovi trend o comportamenti che vale la pena di seguire?

Negli ultimi 15 anni i consumatori sono diventati molto più consapevoli, e non solo in fatto di qualità del prodotto; per esempio guardano con maggiore attenzione a “come è fatto” il packaging. Per questo il design gioca un ruolo sempre più importante nel mercato in genere, e non solo nel settore cosmetico. Questo spiega perché un numero crescente di aziende produttrici dedichino sempre maggiore attenzione all’imballaggio, e Korres, da questo punto di vista, è stata un’antesignana del trend.

Cogliere i trend futuri è piuttosto difficile; per noi le tendenze sono fatte dalle persone e perciò dipendono soprattutto dai loro valori e dalle molte “estetiche” personali, sempre in evoluzione.

The Breath of Gaea Very often the world of cosmetics draws inspiration from nature. More than not it is the products that stand out for their fresh and delicate formulas, but, in the case of the young Greek concern Korres, the packaging also manages to transmit “the breath of the Earth” at its best.

Korres natural products is a concern that has been dealing with beauty and nature since 1996, direct emanation of Athen’s leading homeopathic chemists.

Currently Korres offers a variety of around 150 body and hair treatments, sun products and herbal based compounds. The ingredients are all naturally derived and high quality; mineral oils and their derivates (such as paraffin) are not used but only vegetable oils compatible with the skin. The silicon based compounds have also been replaced by special vegetable combinations that do not block the pores of the skin but nourish and soften the same. Thanks to advanced extraction technologies, the active principles of the plants remain unaltered and guarantee maximum efficiency. These are the main values around which the concern has built up a success that is growing continuously but, as well as the quality of the product, what strikes one about the pack is the graphics used to clad the solutions. The flacons, tubes and jars are without frills, sober, essential, designed to carry out their functions. The images that cover the same on the other hand are anything but minimal: they are close-ups of flowers, seeds, fruit, herbs instilled with a life of their own. They are visual incursions into the world of nature and its vegetable and mineral contents, that appear different when seen close to; they become abstract patterns, vibrations of color, movement, waves, and are a foretaste of an immersion

into a world of wellness.

If packaging ought to express its contents, Korres’ packaging surely goes further, it acts on the psyche and transports the mind far afield. Yet there is not only nature in the photos, but there is also the analytical gaze of the entomologist, who scrutinizes the interstices of the world, and there is the creative gaze of the artist, who freely composes matter. Hence these packaging items are neither naïf, nor are they banal and they poetically represent the cold distance of the scientific approach along with the warmth of life at one and the same time.

Impackt interviewed the art director of Korres natural products Giannis Kouroudis, who is responsible for the company image and winner of many awards and acknowledgements, among which the First Packaging Award & Merit for Corporate Identity 2002, the Golden Star Packaging Design Award 2003, and the First EB-E Award 2004 in packaging and advertising.

What is the concept and the philosophy that lie at the basis of the Korres image?

We have mainly based our approach on minimalist and geometric abstraction; at the same time the company image in its entirety aims at showing quality in aesthetic terms, without in any way overshadowing the natural feature of the product.

How would Korres like to be defined as a cosmetics company?

Our company concept is a well-balanced combination of three basic elements. Firstly, thanks to the company’s pharmaceutical background, every process is well documented and is produced following pharmaceutical type procedures. On top of that, all active ingredients are naturally-derived. The third element is the “joy” that features throughout our entire product range. Our intent is to offer products that are good for you, that are attractive both inside and out, which means that they smell good, have a pleasant texture that of course have nice packaging.

Why did Korres come into being? To satisfy a specific market, to respond to given needs?

Korres natural products was founded in 1996, primarily due to the demand from the customers of the Korres chemist’s for natural and homeopathically compatible cosmetics. Hence, working in that direction, plant extracts with significant medicinal properties were used for the creation of safe and effective herbal products. Now, despite commercial success and broadscale recognition, product development has stayed ingredient-oriented and not marketing-oriented.

We assiduously take part in research & development programs, and we are constantly seeking new ideas to best exploit plant properties in cosmetics.

Who is your ideal customer?

At this moment in time our ideal end user is not demographically or socially definable. Our products are intended for men and women of different origins and social standing, persons that share our ideas, common values and even the same aesthetic tastes: we have many consumers and this is why our products are used on markets that are apparently very different from each other.

Who is the photographer who created the striking images that deck your packs?

Our photographer-designer is Stavros Papagiannis, a real talent. He has the task of creating the company image and he is capable of turning a simple idea into a work of art; I mean to say his photos are the starting point for all our concepts.

As art director, what is your point of view on packaging in the cosmetics sector? Are there new trends or behaviours that are worth pursuing?

During the last 15 years, consumers have become more aware of other parameters besides the quality of the product, for example they pay greater attention to how the packaging has been made. This is why design plays an evermore important role on the market in general, and not only in the cosmetics sector.

The above explains why a growing number of manufacturers are paying more and more attention to packaging, a trend heralded by Korres. Indeed predicting future trends is a very tricky business. For us trends are made by people and thus depend aboveall on their values and on a host of personal aesthetic tastes, these being always in the making.

While my influence was certainly decisive, our success is due to the energy of a team of young designers who work at my side and with whom I share common values with. Along with our team George Korres, the designer - Stavros Papagiannis, my colleague Chrysafis and all the members of the general Korres team have all helped build this image by pitching in with their personality and their aesthetic taste.

Can you tell us about your role in the company and how you normally work?

I am the company art director and am responsible for the company’s image in its entirety. My team works on product and communication design, on organising shows and fairs, on merchandising and even on our stationery, all this on a daily basis. I normally develop new products or new concepts along with Gorge Korres, and our working relationship, that also thrives on a strong personal friendship, is very inspiring for both of us.

La ricerca artistica di Tony Cragg si fonda sulla costruzione di un complesso progetto unitario, che da una prima fase di relazione fisica diretta con l’ambiente sviluppa un pieno recupero dell’oggetto industriale. A partire dagli anni Settanta la scultura di Cragg appare improntata alla contaminazione tra l’elemento artificiale-oggettuale e quello naturale, dimostrando una completa adesione alla contemporaneità. Un "essere-nelmondo-industriale", che si avvale di un’arte che germina per addizione, per assemblaggio, stipando la composizione di nuove icone prelevate dal variegato universo di lusinghe percettive che quotidianamente ci accompagnano.

Infatti i tempi sono cambiati e la tecnologia industriale ha iniziato a dotare i suoi prodotti di forme seducenti, appetibili nel design e nel colore. L’“estetica dell’abbondanza” è la geniale espressione della nuova attitudine urbana pervasa dalla centralità dei media. Sta ora all’artista prendere coscienza del mutato paesaggio contemporaneo, dell’esistenza di una cultura e dunque di una natura allargata, e introdurla nella propria opera.

Esemplare in questo senso è Line of Boxes, una fotografia del 1972 in cui Cragg è ritratto mentre affianca delle scatole l’una all’altra, sostenendole da un lato con il suo stesso corpo, suggerendo un’idea di scultura come processo. Le scatole di cartone presenti in Line of Boxes, sono state prelevate da Cragg direttamente dalla grande distribuzione commerciale; da questo momento Cragg introduce l’elemento del packaging.

Benché raccolta nel paesaggio naturale, la materia prima delle sue opere proviene ora dal panorama culturale dell’uomo: rifiuti, detriti, bottiglie, pezzi di plastica, piatti, scatole. È una “seconda natura” che

fornisce Cragg di un ampio vocabolario di elementi in origine “funzionali”, come ad esempio i flaconi di detergente, i giocattoli, gli utensili casalinghi, ma che si trovano ora ad essere ridotti a scarti, giunti al termine del loro percorso, e quindi pronti a rinascere in una configurazione del tutto nuova.

Prima di essere scelto dall’artista e ricollocato come elemento nel nuovo sistema, ogni singolo frammento appare infatti già carico di una sua storia precedente: ha già, come dire, “vissuto”. Anzi, è stato scelto proprio per il fatto di avere intorno a sé un alone di significati e rimandi complessi, oltre ad un determinato colore e a una determinata forma.

Ponendo una particolare attenzione verso il consumo delle merci prodotte dalla nuova società affluente, le opere eseguite negli anni Ottanta prendono forma a partire dalle potenzialità estetiche della materia di origine plastica, come poliuretani e derivati. Cragg intuisce il potenziale di qualità se non addirittura di bellezza dei rifiuti, e in particolare dell’oggetto che abita la nostra vita quotidiana, e sceglie di indagarlo fino a “straniarlo” mediante la commistione degli elementi: quella bottiglia di detersivo con etichetta strappata, quei chiodi arrugginiti, quelle chincaglierie, tutto quell’immenso immondezzaio di cianfrusaglie inutili possono riattivare inaspettatamente un nuovo, insperato interesse percettivo. In opere come Orange and Green Bottle o Wedding (entrambe del 1982), i piccoli elementi di plastica appaiono ordinati per colore così da funzionare da veri e propri segni, pattern cromatici che accostati l’uno all’altro vanno a formare l’immagine in questione, il più delle volte scelta a partire proprio da uno degli scarti rinvenuti.

colorati che, pur mantenendo la loro riconoscibilità, e quindi la loro identità, concorrono a formare su di una superficie piana una seconda immagine di esso. L’oggetto appare allora sospeso tra presentazione e rappresentazione: visibile nella sua integrità e diviso in sotto elementi, pronto a costituire l’humus da cui nascerà una nuova vita, una nuova visione delle cose.

Come è iniziato il tuo percorso?

Dunque, quando ho iniziato avevo soltanto 19 o 20 anni ed ero studente d’arte. Prima di iscrivermi all’accademia mi interessava il disegno, ma poi durante l’estate iniziai a lavorare di notte in una fonderia industriale vicino a Bristol.

Era un evento spettacolare, c’erano le persone che lavoravano, le cose che si producevano, il rumore, gli stampi, i forni. Era un lavoro molto duro. Poi arrivai all’accademia e mi accorsi che quadri o disegni non potevano descrivere l’esperienza.

Così alla Wimbledon School of Art ero in un gruppo di 30 studenti e non avevo l’energia giusta, e mi accorsi che dovevo cominciare da zero.

Questo è molto importante, cominciai da una posizione molto basilare e mi chiesi "Allora, che cosa ho?".

Poi, negli anni Ottanta, attraverso la raccolta degli oggetti che la società considera rifiuti, hai cercato di rendere visibile le potenzialità estetiche degli scarti di origine sintetica.

Credo che la preoccupazione di lavorare con gli oggetti di produzione industriale si possa far risalire alla fine del 1800. So che sembra tanto tempo fa, ma è molto importante capire questa idea perché ha a che fare con quello che guardano gli artisti. Anche gli artisti come Van Gogh, che dipingevano un tavolo da biliardo o un mobile, contravvenivano al quadro classico e quindi cambiarono il concetto di natura morta. Van Gogh

una volta descrisse il suo camminare in un ambiente che definì strano, con delle forme e dei colori fantastici, ma era soltanto la vicina discarica.

Quindi, per me, è con l’arrivo della rivoluzione industriale che gli oggetti cominciarono a imporsi sulla società e sulla sua concezione artistica.

Non si possono evitare il treno e tutti i prodotti industriali che abbiamo intorno, e così tutto quanto si può dire che diventi come una enorme natura morta composta di oggetti industriali.

Chiaramente, il primo esempio fisico fu l’“orinatoio” di Duchamp. Gli artisti come Van Gogh, non avevano l’immaginazione degli artisti del secolo seguente, necessaria per fare arte con cose del genere, e non furono capaci di fare quello che fece Duchamp. Lui capì il potere estetico e la realtà degli oggetti industriali, e senz’altro fu un grande choc. Ma dopo Duchamp quasi tutti i movimenti del Novecento, come Dada, Fluxus, Pop Art, Arte Povera e altri si occuparono con esattezza di guardare alla parte non artistica della nostra esistenza, e di portarla dentro il mondo artistico.

Progressivamente la tua scultura inizia a prendere in considerazione lʼoggetto banale contenuto nella nostra quotidianità non più solo sotto forma di rifiuto. Sedie, tavoli, e mobili di vario genere, sembrano adesso “animati” da una superficie epidermica addizionale che al contempo ne nasconde la forma ma ne rivela una natura “altra”, come fossero dei nuovi vegetali o delle nuove specie animali nate dallʼincrocio tra i diversi oggetti.

Si può dire che hai cercato di dare vita a nuovi oggetti?

Come dicevamo, le mie opere sin dall’inizio hanno incluso oggetti banali tratti dalla realtà. A quel tempo stavo introducendo nuove materie e quindi nuove possibilità date dal contesto. Dopo mi accorsi che ci

doveva essere qualcosa in più oltre alla ricerca inaugurata da Duchamp.

Ero in una fase giovanile e devo dire un paio di cose: primo, che può sembrare intelligente usare i rifiuti ma bisogna capire che all’epoca stavo lavorando con i soldi di uno studente e di conseguenza i rifiuti erano i materiali più facili da trovare. Poi, il fatto è che io ho cominciato a fare le mostre con quei materiali alla fine degli anni Settanta e dopo il 1982 ero davvero stanco di viaggiare dappertutto. Ero entrato in una routine: arrivavo in un posto e dovevo inventare delle cose, trovare i materiali e nuove idee. Per un periodo era eccitante, ma poi era diventato solo un repertorio di cose da fare e io mi accorgevo di essere infelice in quella situazione. Mi accorsi che dovevo fare di più con i materiali, prendere più responsabilità ed ottenere un significato più profondo di quello che riuscivo ad ottenere con le composizioni semplici. Volevo introdurre nuovi materiali e nuovi oggetti. Volevo veramente arrivare ad un altro livello.

E così nel 1983 attraversai una crisi di vita e di lavoro e tornai nello studio per passarci più tempo. Una delle idee era quella di cambiare il contesto degli oggetti, invece di comporli semplicemente, e dovetti trovare un modo per fare quello che io chiamo “fragments into structure”, l’idea cioè di come far stare degli oggetti in una struttura. Gli oggetti si possono mettere in una composizione e disegnarci sopra, o coprirli di un materiale, o un colore, in qualche modo bisogna farli funzionare insieme secondo un progetto. Quindi queste pelli o superfici come in Unschärferelation, 1991, o in Social Situation, 1992, erano importanti perché fornivano un tipo di adesione all’oggetto. I ganci di Social Situation erano un modo diverso di comporre l’opera. Le materie o gli oggetti che trovavo

dovevano essere incollati, o martellati, o saldati insieme, così da trovare un mondo nuovo o una costellazione tutta loro. Ovviamente non posso far vivere le cose ma esiste una gamma vasta di materiali, viventi e non, sul nostro pianeta.

Adesso si scoprono anche nuovi pianeti, ma trovo comunque fantastico lo stato avanzato delle cose che produciamo.

Sempre più nella tua recente produzione lʼoggetto seriale subisce una metamorfosi. Nella serie Early Forms i contenitori, le bottiglie, gli utensili della nostra quotidianità subiscono un processo evolutivo della forma che li avvicina a strane figure biomorfe, quasi fossero dei misteriosi invertebrati le cui “contorsioni” fanno pensare a una mutazione in atto.

Come nascono queste tue ultime sculture?

Con Early Forms, si può dire che la bottiglia che conosciamo è a un punto iniziale. Ma tutto quello che sta fra uno stadio e l’altro è la cosa interessante, e così ci sono le forme o le figure intermedie. Ci sono delle cose con una realtà nuova. Ogni tanto pensavo che la serie Early Forms sarebbe stata la mia opera finale, ma ho trovato ancora più cose che mi interessano e sulle quali ho cominciato lavorare di recente.

E questo continua. Le mie ultime opere sono un po’ più complicate.

Durante il mio percorso mi sono accorto che abbiamo diversi modi per descrivere il mondo. Uno è geometrico e obiettivo, con linee, punti e superfici. Poi c’è un altro modo di descrivere il mondo che è organico. Ma entrambi i termini sono soltanto modi diversi di descrivere la stessa cosa. Per esempio, un albero è molto organico, ma è anche un complesso problema geometrico.

Quindi molte delle opere nelle ultime serie hanno una base geometrica, perché sono o ellissi o cerchi o

che arriva l’idea dell’astrazione, dal cercare le soluzioni, le spiegazioni e modi per continuare. Con il principio dello smontare le cose, il metodo scientifico è diventato il più importante. Ora siamo così immersi nel modo scientifico di pensare che tutto il mondo pensa nello stesso modo e, sia nell’arte che nella scienza, dimentichiamo da dove vengono i vocaboli. Io ho cercato di criticare questo fatto, e di indurre le persone, se non proprio a fare marcia indietro, almeno a ripensare il senso di quelle parole.

Ma hanno un contorno più organico, quindi è un approccio nuovo che mette in dubbio lo stato di queste due definizioni. Pensa ai concetti di arte astratta e di arte figurativa. Sono altri modi di descrivere la realtà, ma ci si dimentica cosa vuole dire astratto quando si usa la parola. Il vocabolo esiste solo dal Rinascimento. Precedentemente i teologi basavano le informazioni su Dio; invece durante il Rinascimento si cominciò a capire che l’unico modo di conoscere le cose era di smontarle. Guardarono dentro gli animali, gli uomini, le piante, il cielo, e cominciarono produrre quadri incompleti, non di un’insieme, ma un’astrazione, piccole parti. E’ da qui

Tony Cragg’s work is based on the construction of a complex unitary project, that from a first phase of direct physical reaction with our surrounds leads to a full recovery of the industrial object. Starting off from the seventies Cragg’s sculpture appears marked by the contamination between the artificial/object-type element and the natural one, demonstrating a complete identification with the contemporary. A “being-in-the-industrial-world”, that avails itself of an art that germinates by addition, by assembly, by cramming the composition with new icons picked up from the variegated universe of perceptive flattery that accompanies our everyday existence. In fact times have changed and industrial technology has begun to give its products seductive shapes, a design and color that makes them appear more appetising. The “aesthetics of abundance” is the ingenious expression of this new urban approach, pervaded as it is by the central nature of the media.

It is now up to the artist to become aware of the changes in our contemporary surrounds, of the existence of an extended culture and hence an extended nature, and introduce the same into his/her work. Exemplary in this sense Cragg’s Line of Boxes, a photo from 1972 where Cragg is portrayed as he places some boxes beside each other, supporting them on one side with his body, suggesting an idea of sculpture as process. Cragg got the cardboard boxes directly from broadscale

distribution; from this point onwards Cragg introduces the packaging element into his work.

While still drawing from our natural surrounds, the raw material of his works now comes from man’s cultural panorama: waste, rubble, bottles, pieces of plastic, plates, boxes. It as a “second nature” that provides Cragg with a broad vocabulary of elements that were initially “functional”, like for example detersive flacons, toys, household utensils, but that have now been reduced down to waste, having reached the end of their lifespan, and hence ready to reappear in a new form.

Before being chosen by the artist and placed as an element in the new system, each single fragment in fact appears already charged with its previous history: it has one might say already “lived”: Rather it has been chosen for the very fact that it is surrounded by an aura of complex meanings and complex references, as well as having a given color and a given shape. Paying particular attention to the consumption of goods produced by the new affluent society, the works made in the eighties take shape starting off from the aesthetic potential of the original plastic material , such as polyurethane and its derivates. Cragg intuits the potential of the quality if not even the beauty of waste, and in particular of the object that is part of our daily existence, and chooses to study the same to the point of “extranging” it through the mixture of elements: that detergent bottle with the torn label, those rusty nails, those trinkets, that heap of useless rubbish can unexpectedly reactivate a new, un-hoped for perceptive interest. In works like the Orange and Green Bottle or Wedding (both from 1982), the small elements of plastic are ordered by color so as to function as true and proper signs, chromatic patterns that, set beside each other, to go to form the image in question, more than not chosen starting right off from one of the pieces of junk. On the one hand one has the presence of the plastic object taken as a model, on

identi-kit the other the various colored fragments that, while still being recognisable, and hence maintaining their identity, go to make a second image of themselves on a flat surface. The object thus appears suspended between presentation and representation: visible as a whole yet carved into subelements, ready to make up the humus from which it will take on new life, a new vision of things.

How did you begin your artistic way?

Well, when I start I was only 19 or 20 and I was an art student. When I first went to art school I was interested in drawing but during the/one summer I worked night shifts in an industrial foundry near Bristol. It was a spectacular event/place, with people working, things being produced, noise, mould makers, casts, furnaces. It was very hard work. Then I ended up in art school and I realised that pictures or drawing didn’t really cover the experience so I arrived at Wimbledon school of art, in a group of 30 students and I had the wrong kind of energy. So it was like starting from scratch, I think that’s really important. I started from a very basic position and asked myself “Well, what have I got?” I was at the time a young healthy man with simple materials I found. I don’t know if I can call my early work “performances” because they were never intended to be repeated, they were just between me and the photographer. I can agree that there was a direct physical relationship with the environment though.

Gradually your sculptures started to include common, everyday objects. Chairs, tables and various other pieces of furniture appear to be animated by an extra, skin-like surface that at that same time conceals their form and reveals another side to them, as if they were new species of plants or animals, crossbreeds of different objects. May we say you gave a new life to objects?

My work included everyday objects right from the beginning, and that was what they were based on. The reality, what you were confronted with in the street. So I was bringing in new materials and new possibilities for the materials into a context.

After doing that for a while I realised there had to be more than just this sort of Duchampesque thing. That was a student phase and I just have to say two things: one is that it sounds very clever that one was using waste materials but you have to understand that I was working on a student economy so that was the material that was easiest for me to get. It was what was available.

Then the fact is that I started to exhibit in the late 70s using those materials and by 1982 I was

In the 1980s, by collecting waste items, thrown away by society, it seems that you wanted to highlight the aesthetic potential of the man-made materials.

Working in the 1980s, we didn’t have the kind of information that you have in art schools today. We can talk about different movements in the 1970s, such as “arte povera” but the fact is there was no international stage or transfer of work so I don’t agree with the idea that there was an international stage to work in line with. But I think that the preoccupation of working with industrially produced objects is something that began at the end of the 19th century. I know that sounds like a long way back but that’s really important to get that idea because it is not got to do with the international stage or fashion, it’s to do with what artists are looking at. Even artists like Van Gogh,

they painted a billiard table or some furniture or something, they weren’t classical pictures and they changed the idea of the still life. Van Gogh once described walking across a strange environment with fantastic shapes and colours and all he was doing was describing a walk through the local rubbish dump. So the idea for me was that with the industrial revolution objects started to impose themselves upon society and artists’ impression of it. So you can’t get away from the railway train and all the things that industry has produced around you. So it becomes an enormous still life made of industrial objects. Obviously the first physical and the clearest instance was Duchamp when he produced the “Pisoir”. Artists at the end of the 19th century, like Van Gogh, didn’t have the 20th century imagination to make art out of things like that and weren’t in a position to do what Duchamp did but he understood the aesthetic pressure and the reality of industrial objects, and of course it was a big shock. But since Duchamp almost all of the art movements in the 20th century, certainly Dada, Flaxus, Pop Art, Arte Povera and others were occupied with exactly that process of looking at non-art areas of our existence and bringing them into the art world.

really tired of travelling everywhere and then it was more like a performance because I would arrive somewhere and have to make things up, find materials, ideas and invent new things again.

For a time it was very exciting then it became a repertoire of things to do and I became unhappy with it. I realised that I had to more to the material, to take more responsibility and get more meaning than just simple arrangements introducing new materials and objects. I really wanted to reach another level, so in 1983 I had a big life and work crisis so I went back to the studio and spent more time there. One of the ideas was to change the context of the objects instead of just arranging them and I had to find what I call “fragments into structure”, the idea of how you get an object to stay in a structure so you can either arrange them together in a composition or you draw on them, or you can cover them in material or colour, somehow you have to make the things work together. So these skins or surfaces like in Unschärferelation, 1991 or in Social Situation, 1992, were important because they also provided a kind of adhesion.

The hooks in Social Situation were a different way of fixing the work together. The materials or objects I found had to be glued or hammered or welded together and found a new world or constellation of their own. And of course I can’t make things be alive but there is a incredible range of materials, not just life but materials, on our planet, and now we’re discovering new planets, but the advanced state of things we’re producing is what I find fantastic.

More and more in your recent work, the object of industrial origin undergoes a metamorphosis. In the Early Forms collection, the forms of containers, bottles and everyday utensils undergo an evolutionary process that makes them almost strange, biomorphical figures, a bit like mysterious invertebrates whose contortions remind us of mutating bodies. How did your latest sculptures come about?

First of all the Early Forms collection is one of the clearest groups of work. From the original offering of an industrial object being interesting… immediately as I offered it, it became a metaphor for the organic, in a sense organ, organic. So right from the beginning with Early Forms, the

bottle as we know it is like a starting place. But what’s interesting is everything that’s between one station and the next, so it has in-between shapes or figures. Now and then I thought Early Forms would be my final work but I’ve found more and more new things that have interested me and that I’ve started work on recently. So that goes on. My latest work is a little more complicated so I’ll try to keep it brief. As my works move on I realise that we have different ways if describing the world. One is geometric, which is objective with lines, points and surfaces.

Then there is another way of describing the world, which is, to use your word, organic. But the fact is that both terms are just different ways of describing the same thing. I mean a tree is organic but it’s also a complicated geometric problem. So a lot of my recent series have a kind of geometric base, because the cross-sections are either elipses or circles or something with a clear sense of rationality. But they have a more organic contour so it’s new approach that questions the status of these two definitions. It goes back to the idea of abstract and figurative art that we talk about. These are other ways of describing reality but people forget what abstract means when they say something is abstract. The term has only existed since the renaissance Before that theologians dealt with a singular existence and information based on god but during the renaissance people started to take things apart. So they looked inside animals, humans and plants and into the sky and they started to produce pictures that were not whole, singular pictures but abstractions, little bits. And that’s where the idea of abstraction comes from, we’re looking for solutions and explanations and ways to go on. You can’t digest everything, scientific thought has become the main method.

The principle of that is taking the thing apart. We are so deeply involved in the scientific way of thinking that both in art and science we forget where the terms come from and the whole world thinks in one way. So I tried to criticise that and get people to if not go back, at least revisit think about those terms.

Cercando disperatamente fra le frequenze una radio meno infestata da spot pubblicitari, meno invasa da politici logorroici, meno intasata da terrificante immondizia musicale, a molti sarà capitato di imbattersi in un’emittente piacevole, rilassante, con una scelta musicale equilibrata e, soprattutto, poche interruzioni insomma, un sogno. Quel sogno ha un nome e si chiama LifeGate.

La Porta della Vita - questo più o meno il suo significato - però è molto più di una radio: intanto perché è anche un sito web, un giornale, un ristorante, una clinica olistica... e poi perché, c’era da aspettarselo, sotto c’è un’intera filosofia di vita. Nessuna meraviglia, dato che l’ideatore e il fondatore del tutto è un personaggio come Marco Roveda, l’imprenditore che ha introdotto, nell’Italia negli anni ’80, alimenti biologici con il marchio “Fattoria Scaldasole” e che oggi sta lanciando la sua nuova sfida, quella di fare business in modo consapevole, rispettoso della gente e della natura o, come compendia lui stesso, “eco-culturale”.

Chi è Marco Roveda?

La mia vita imprenditoriale è cominciata presto, tanto che a 22 anni ero già titolare di due imprese edili e a 27 avevo una discreta ricchezza, risultato della logica indotta dal “sistema”: “Studia che poi lavori, lavora che poi guadagni, guadagna che poi sei felice”. Ma non ero felice. Mi accorgo che i soldi non portano la felicità, portano solo, al massimo, la comodità. Io volevo di più, qualcosa che mi desse veramente la felicità e mi rendo conto che la ricchezza materiale, da sola, non potrà mai veramente realizzarla. È così che decido di chiudere le imprese e partire, con mia moglie Simona, in “esplorazione”.

Approdiamo a Carona, un piccolo paese del Canton Ticino, e per alcuni anni viviamo a stretto contatto con la natura, dedicandoci ad attività manuali e lasciando così spazio ai pensieri. Maturo l’idea del “vivere secondo coscienza”, riconosco l’importanza dei valori e dei valori spirituali nella vita quotidiana: l’amicizia, l’amore, il rispetto per la natura, la responsabilità sociale e l’impegno nei confronti del mondo in cui viviamo.

Tornati in Italia cerchiamo una fattoria a nord di Milano e avviamo un’azienda agricola biodinamica con un ecosistema in grado di provvedere a quasi tutte le necessità del sistema: dalla coltivazione del foraggio, all’allevamento delle mucche, alla produzione delle sementi per la semina successiva.

Dal desiderio di valorizzare la caratteristica di un latte prodotto in questo modo, mi viene l’idea di trasformarlo in yogurt, yogurt biologico e biodinamico. E così, nel 1986, nasce Fattoria Scaldasole.

L’azienda diventa in pochi anni la prima società italiana del mercato biologico, contribuendo in modo determinante alla diffusione di coscienza ecologica e diventando il

modello di un’alternativa imprenditoriale. Dimostro che “si può fare business rispettando la natura e diffondendo attenzione al prodotto biologico”. Sessantamila aziende produttrici e trasformatrici, seguendo il successo di Scaldasole, creano il nuovo mercato del biologico italiano.

Basti pensare che nei primi anni ‘80 l’Italia era all’ultimo posto nel mondo per coltivazione biologica, quando ho venduto Scaldasole, nel 1998, era al primo, con 1 ettaro su 15 coltivati con metodi biologici.

Vendo Scaldasole e già si profila l’idea di un progetto a più ampio spettro per diffondere i concetti della qualità della vita… LifeGate…

Cosa ti ha spinto a passare da Scaldasole a Lifegate?

Scaldasole è stata un’esperienza fondamentale, sia dal punto di vista imprenditoriale che umano, culminata nel 1997 con l’attribuzione del titolo di “Imprenditore dell’anno per la qualità della vita”. Il progetto LifeGate nasce sulle basi di Scaldasole, è una nuova sfida imprenditoriale con cui intendo dimostrare che è possibile costruire un nuovo modello economico in cui convivano profitti, rispetto per l’ambiente e attenzione per il sociale.

LifeGate è un progetto multimediale, centro di aggregazione per il mondo ecoculturale, con tre media (radio, portale e magazine) attraverso cui diffondere consapevolezza, ed è anche un punto di riferimento comune per tutte le realtà che operano nel settore dell’alimentazione biologica, della salute olistica, della salvaguardia ambientale, della ricerca interiore.

E per rendere meno virtuale la filosofia di LifeGate ho dato avvio alle prime iniziative concrete: LifeGate Restaurant, LifeGate Café, la Clinica Olistica, e il marchio “Impatto Zero‚”, il progetto con cui diamo la possibilità alle aziende, persone ed eventi di compensare le proprie emissioni di

anidride carbonica nell’atmosfera con la conservazione e la tutela di foreste in crescita.

Il successo del progetto LifeGate dimostra che sta realmente cambiando qualcosa negli animi delle persone o cʼè il rischio che per molti sia solo un atteggiamento superficiale legato a nuove tendenze?

La mancanza di valori e ideali è una delle prime cause di frustrazione.

Nella società occidentale benestante siamo tutti più comodi e con le pance più piene, ma non siamo né più sani, né più felici di quanto non fossero i nostri nonni, pur con molto meno a disposizione. Siamo per contro più insoddisfatti, depressi, e, spesso, molto soli. Ora la gente comincia finalmente a rendersene conto, la gente vuole la vera qualità della vita.

E LifeGate, promuovendo la civiltà di valori ed ideali in contrapposizione a quella dei consumi, è la risposta a questo bisogno crescente.

Packaging, imballaggi, contenitori, quali considerazioni puoi fare su un argomento così attuale e complesso, soprattutto per le sue dirette implicazioni, con il marketing, con la comunicazione e con lʼambiente?

Un tempo un prodotto, per essere venduto, doveva solo “essere presente”; dopo la guerra tutto quel poco che il mercato poteva offrire veniva venduto. Più avanti, quando l’offerta ha cominciato ad aumentare,

Qual è lʼatteggiamento più etico che ogni impresa dovrebbe avere e come è possibile conciliarlo con il fatto che, comunque, deve realizzare dei profitti?

Stiamo subendo le conseguenze di una scala di valori capace di preoccuparsi solo del profitto.

Le relazioni che più hanno sofferto sono amicizia e amore. Quando la ricerca del bene “materiale” diventa spasmodica, le relazioni si trasformano solo in un’occasione di scalata sociale. È uno dei prezzi del sistema capitalistico, una distorsione del nostro naturale modo di socializzare, un inaridimento dei rapporti umani...

Il profitto è uno strumento. Non è il male. Ha un posto importante nella vita quotidiana di ognuno di noi così come in quella di un’azienda. Tutti abbiamo bisogno di profitto. Ma per “profitto” intendo il giusto ricavo per l’attività svolta, il giusto guadagno,

non la speculazione, l’appropriazione delle ricchezze altrui o lo sfruttamento delle risorse naturali! Tra profitto e speculazione c’è la stessa differenza che tra pagare i giusti interessi e sottostare all’usura.

Vi sono tre concetti molto importanti, alla base di una ridefinizione del rapporto tra profitto ed etica, che devono essere legati tra loro: “People”, “planet” e “profit”.

“People”, la gente, siamo noi.

Il rispetto dei singoli esseri umani, l’attenzione alla qualità della vita devono essere alla base di qualsiasi ragionamento e iniziativa.

“Planet” è il nostro pianeta. Se non prendiamo in considerazione i bisogni del pianeta, miniamo la base stessa della nostra esistenza, perché non possiamo più vivere alle spalle dell’ecosistema.

“Profit” è il profitto. Ed è arrivato il momento di renderci conto che senza le altre due “p”, senza prendere in considerazione sia la gente che il pianeta, non c’è armonia di vita. Non c’è neanche vita.

Ogni impresa dovrebbe produrre un profitto equo e allo stesso tempo incanalato verso i valori, legato alle aspirazioni della gente e al rispetto del pianeta. Etico, eco-sostenibile, equosolidale dovrebbero essere i principi ispiratori non solo di aziende del no profit ma anche di quelle inserite nei tradizionali circuiti produttivi. Per una civiltà dei valori, giusta e solidale.

per essere comprato un prodotto ha dovuto anche “essere buono (di qualità)”. Con l’aumento della concorrenza, per essere notato e per essere scelto, il prodotto ha dovuto anche “essere bello”. Mentre negli ultimi anni, per essere vincente, ha dovuto anche “essere sano (sicuro)”.

Oggi, per rispondere adeguatamente a un pubblico sempre più attento, il prodotto deve avere il quinto elemento, deve “essere etico”, cioè eco-compatibile, quindi non inquinante, eco-sostenibile, cioè costruito evitando le risorse non rinnovabili, equosolidale, senza avere su di sé, cioè, l’ombra dello sfruttamento minorile o di ingiusti trattamenti.

Il packaging, quindi, deve tenere conto dell’impatto che ha sull’ambiente. Bisogna fare di tutto per ridurlo il più possibile.

Con Scaldasole ho sempre prestato particolare attenzione alla scelta dell’imballaggio, tanto che siamo stati i primi a fare il vasetto di carta e a considerare il packaging un prezioso modo per comunicare con il consumatore. I nostri yogurt, oltre a essere buoni e sani, veicolavano dei messaggi, diffondendo valori e coscienza ecologica tra la gente.

I consorzi si stanno muovendo molto bene, fanno molta comunicazione, e oggi sono sempre più numerose le aziende che hanno fatto scelte importanti a questo proposito.

TetraPak e Confruit, ad esempio, hanno aderito a Impatto Zero‚ una scelta ambientale che è valsa a loro e a noi - l’Oscar dell’Imballaggio 2004 per la sezione Ambiente.

Hai in mente altri progetti dʼimpresa e di vita per il futuro?

Far diventare LifeGate, che per ora è una realtà solo italiana, la piattaforma europea del mondo eco-culturale.

L’impegno di LifeGate per una produzione eco-sostenibile è assai concreto. Lo dimostra il progetto Impatto Zero® di LifeGate, che si pone l’obiettivo di calcolare le emissioni di anidride carbonica delle attività produttive, compensandole con la protezione e riqualificazione di foreste in crescita; gli alberi hanno infatti la preziosa proprietà di assorbire l’anidride carbonica e risulta quindi fondamentale proteggere le ultime grandi aree verdi della Terra e crearne di nuove.

In particolare, a questo progetto hanno aderito Confruit e Tetrapak, l’una creando una nuova linea di succhi derivati da agricoltura biologica, l’altra confezionandoli in packaging a ridotto impatto ambientale. Confruit e Tetra Pak, aderendo al progetto Impatto Zero® di LifeGate, hanno deciso di compensare le emissioni di CO2 necessarie per confezionare 5.900.000 confezioni di succhi di frutta biologici con la tutela di 360.000 metri quadri di foresta in Costa Rica e la riforestazione di 10.000 mq di bosco nel Parco del Ticino.

In particolare verranno messi a Impatto zero 1,8 milioni di confezioni da tre brik MID 200 ml e 500.000 Tetra Square da 1 litro. Proprio per queste ragioni, il 20 maggio 2004, la confezione di succo Vivi G Bio ha meritato l’Oscar dell’Imballaggio 2004 per la sezione ambiente.

La giuria dell’Istituto Italiano dell’Imballaggio ha definito il progetto Impatto Zero® di LifeGate “un progetto di internalizzazione dei costi ambientali”. La giuria ha inoltre “valutato interessante la proposta di compensazione globale attraverso opere di riforestazione e raccolta e riciclaggio del cartone per bevande, riponendo fiducia nell’impegno che le aziende metteranno nel realizzare il progetto”.

LifeGate’s commitment for an eco-sustainable production is pretty concrete. This is demonstrated by LifeGate’s Zero Impact (Impatto Zero®) scheme, that has the objective of calculating the carbon dioxide emissions of manufacturing activities, compensating them with the protection and requalification of forests in growth; trees have in fact the precious property of absorbing carbon dioxide, and thus protecting the last great green areas of the world and creating new areas becomes fundamental.

Confruit and Tetra Pak have joined the scheme, the former creating a new line of juices deriving from biological agriculture, the latter packing them in low environmental impact packaging. Confruit and Tetra Pak, by joining the LifeGate Zero Impact scheme, have decided to compensate the emission of CO2 needed for making 5,900,000 packs of biological fruit juice with the protection of 360, 000 square metres of forest in Costa Rica and the reforestation of 10,000 sq m of wood in the Parco del Ticino. In particular 1.8 million packs of three MID 200 ml briks and 500,000 1 litre Tetra Squares will be put at zero impact. For this very reason, 20th May 2004, the Vivi G Bio juice pack won the 2004 Packaging Oscar in the environmental section. The jury of the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio defined the Lifegate Zero Impact project “as a project for internalizing environmental costs”. The jury has also “rated the proposal of global compensation through the work of reforestation and the collection and recycling of beverage cartons as interesting, having faith in the companies’s commitment to completing the project”.

While desperately trying to tune in to radio less infested with advertising, less invaded by logorrheic politicians, less cluttered with terrifying musical trash, many will have come across a station that is pleasant, relaxing, with a balanced musical choice and aboveall few interruptions - a dream that is.

That dream has a name and it is called LifeGate and it is much more than a radio: because it is also a website, a newspaper, a restaurant, a holistic clinic… and because, as to be expected, there is an entire philosophy of life behind it. This is no wonder, given that the creator and founder of all this is a person of the standing of Marco Roveda, the entrepreneur who introduced biological foodstuff under the “Fattoria Scaldasole” brand into Italy in the eighties and who is today launching a new challenge, that of people and nature conscious - or as he himself sums up - “eco-cultural” business. In this allround portrait, Roveda explains how and why he has embarked on this difficult undertaking.

Who is Marco Roveda?

My life as an entrepreneur began early on, to the point where at 22 I already owned two building firms and at 27 I was already fairly rich, result of the logic induced by the “system”: “study so that

you can work, work so that you can earn, earn so that you can be happy”. But I wasn’t happy.

I noticed that money does not bring you happiness, money at the most brings you convenience. I wanted more, something that really made me happy. I realised that material wealth on its own fell far short of what I was searching for.

And thus I decided to close the concerns and go off, with my wife Simona, in “exploration”. We ended up at Carona, a small town in Canton Ticino, and for some years we lived in close contact with nature, dedicating our time to manual activity and thus leaving space for thought. I developed the idea of “living according to my conscience”, I recognised the importance of values and the spiritual values of everyday life: friendship, love, respect for nature, social responsibility and the commitment to the world in which we live.

Having returned to Italy we looked for a farm north of Milan and we started up a biodynamic enterprise with an ecosystem capable of providing for nearly all the system’s needs: from cultivation to fodder, to cow rearing, to producing the seeds for next year’s sowing. From the wish to make the most of the characteristics of milk produced in this way I had the idea of turning it into yoghurt, biological and biodynamic yoghurt.

And thus in 1986, the Fattoria Scaldasole came into being. In just a few years the concern became the first Italian company in the biological market, contributing in a decisive way to the spread of the ecological conscience, becoming the model of an entrepreneurial alternative. It showed that “one can do business respecting nature and spreading knowledge of the biological product”. Following the success of the

Scaldasole, sixty thousand producer and converter concerns led the creation the new Italian biological market. One only need think that in the early eighties Italy held last place in the world in biological cultivation, when I sold the Scaldasole in 1998, it was first, with 1 hectare out of 15 cultivated biologically.

I sold Scaldasole and I got the idea of a broader project, spectre for spreading the concepts of the quality of life… LifeGate.

What is the more ethical approach that every concern should have and how can one reconcile it with the fact that anyway one has to make profits?

We are suffering the consequences of a scale of values that is only able to care about profits. The relations that have suffered most are friendship and love. When the quest for “material” wealth becomes spasmodic, relations become mere occasions for social climbing. It is one of the prices of the capitalist system, a distorting of our natural way of socialising, a drying up of human relations…

Profit is a tool. It is not an evil. It has an important place in the daily existence of each of us and in that of a company. We all need profits. But by “profit” I mean the right return for the activity carried out, the right earning, not speculation, the appropriation of other people’s riches or the exploitation of natural resources! Between profit and speculation there lies the same difference as between the right interest and being subjected to

What led you to go from Scaldasole to Lifegate?

Scaldasole was a fundamental experience, both from an entrepreneurial and human point of view, culminating in 1997 in the attribution of the title “Entrepreneur of the year for the quality of life”.

The LifeGate project has been created on the basis of the Scaldasole, it is a new entrepreneurial challenge by which I intend demonstrating that one can build a new economic model that combines profits, respect for the environment and for social wellbeing.

LifeGate is a multimedial project, a centre of aggregation for the ecocultural world, with three medias (radio, portal and magazine) through which to spread awareness, and also a common reference point for all the concerns that operate in the biological food sector, in holistic health, in safeguarding of the environment, and for the search within. And to make the philosophy of LifeGate less virtual I have started up the first concrete undertakings: a LifeGate Restaurant, a LifeGate Café, the Holistic Clinic, and the “ Zero Impact” brand, the project by which we give firms, persons and events the possibility of compensating their carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere with the preservation and safeguarding of forests in growth.

Does success of the LifeGate project show that things are really changing in the spirit of the people or is there the risk that for many it is just a superficial attitude related to a trend?

The lack of values and ideals is one of the prime causes of frustration. In the affluent western society we are all a little more comfortable with our stomachs full, but we are neither healthier, nor are we happier than our grandparents were, even though they had a lot less than we have.

Rather we are even more dissatisfied, depressed and often a lot more alone. Now people have finally begun to realise this, people want the real quality of life. And LifeGate by promoting the society of values and ideals as against that of consumption, is the answer to this growing need.

usury. There are three very important concepts at the basis of the redefinition of relations between profit and ethics, that have to be linked to each other: “People”, “Planet” and “Profit”.

We are the “People”. The respect for the single human being, the attention to the quality of life have to be at the basis of any reasoning and undertaking.

Then there is our “Planet”. If we don’t consider the needs of the planet, we undermine the very basis of our existence, because we can no longer live at the expense of the ecosystem.

As far as “Profit” is concerned we have got to when we should realise that without the other two “Ps”, without considering both the people and the planet, there is no harmony of life. Indeed their is no life.

Every concern should make a fair profit at the same time channelling it towards values associated with people’s aspirations and respect for the planet. Being ethical, eco-sustainable, and guaranteeing fair trade should not only be the principles inspiring the non profit concerns, they should also inspire the concerns that are part of the traditional production circuits. For a society of just, fair values.

Packaging, containers and the like, what considerations can you make on a subject that is so pressing and complex, aboveall for its direct implications, on marketing, on communication and on the environment?

Initially a product, to be sold, had to only “be present”; after the war what little the market could offer was sold. Further on, when the offer began to increase, to be bought a product also had to

“be good (in quality)”. With the increase in competition, to be noted and to be chosen, the product also had to “be appealing”. While over these last years, to be successful the product also had to “be healthy (and safe)”. These days, to respond adequately to a public that is evermore attentive, the product has to have a fifth element it has to “be ethical”, that is ecocompatible, hence non polluting, ecosustainable, that is constructed avoiding non renewable resources, it has to guarantee fair trade, that is without the shadow of child exploitation or unjust treatment.

Hence packaging has to consider the impact it has on the environment. Everything should be done to reduce it as much as possible. With the Scaldasole I have tried to pay particular attention to the choice of packaging, in that we were the first to make the paper tub and to consider packaging as a precious way of communicating with the consumer. Our yoghurts, as well as being good and healthy, carry messages, spread values and ecological consciousness among people. The consortiums are moving very well, and are doing a lot of communication, and today the companies that have made important choices on this count are evermore numerous. Tetra Pak and Confruit, for example, have joined the Zero Impact scheme, an environmental choice that won them - and us - the Packaging Oscar for 2004 for the Environmental section.

Do you have any other entrepreneurial and life projects for the future?

Make LifeGate, that for now only exists in Italy, the European platform for the eco-cultural world.

Di che materia sono fatti quei sogni, di donne e sempre più anche di uomini, che si chiamano prodotti di bellezza? Da dove parte e, soprattutto, come si orienta il creativo del make-up nel grande fiume, in cui confluiscono suggestioni, stili e orientamenti da un mondo senza più barriere (conoscitive) né (forse) grandi segreti?

La risposta di Dominique Szabo, Senior Vice President Trends del nuovo Trend Team di Estée Lauder, è concisa: «Devi sapere, vedere, toccare, odorare… e, soprattutto, osservare, osservare e ancora osservare... Devi assorbire tutto come una spugna; poi ti “spremi” e avrai il trend».

L’enunciato è semplice, ma la pratica? Di sicuro impegnativa, quantomeno per la sterminata quantità di stimoli che l’industria culturale produce a getto continuo; e guai a trascurare le espressioni “alternative” delle tribù giovanili e dei tanti mutevoli sottoinsiemi della società.

Una pratica, viene il sospetto, che

deve essere sostenuta da una sensibilità ben allenata, fatta di natura e biografia, di volontà e azione, oltre che di durevole passione. Questo almeno suggerisce la nostra interlocutrice, che mostra un’amichevole disponibilità a calarsi nel discorso, fornendo informazioni e suggestioni sui più recenti prodotti di Estée Lauder. Quelli che, senza tradire le nonne e le madri, stanno conquistando le ultime generazioni: i piccoli cubi che sembrano ghiaccio, con dentro specchi e sorprendenti “trucchi” cremosi, gli ultimi eyeliner e i colori per le labbra Pure Color, dal sottile pennello o dal lungo stilo da intingere nella boccetta-calamaio. E poi ancora i rossetti Electric, ispirati ai grattacieli più alti del mondo, e il blush, nato da uno studio delle opere e dei colori di Victor Vasarely, protagonista dell’arte optical.

E, infine, i prodotti delle collezioni che vedremo solo a tempo debito (i creativi della Estée stanno già pensando all’inverno 2005) che si rifaranno - rivela la nostra interlocutrice - alle fantasie dell’architettura zoomorfica, alla pregnante immobilità di Edward Hopper e chissà a quali altre pratiche antiche e usanze popolari, film, decori, fotografie e abiti.

Altro che fiume! È un oceano di suggestioni in cui il rischio di perdersi è reale. Come scegliere, dunque?

Come distinguere il nuovo dalla copia, l’effimero dal durevole, ciò che farà tendenza da ciò che è già, magari suo malgrado, imitazione?

«I criteri di selezione dei trend e il successivo sviluppo dei prodotti sono essenzialmente determinati dall’identità delle nostre clienti e dalla coerenza con la nostra immagine aziendale e costituiscono la materia di una grande opera corale. Gli atti e gli attori della catena ideale della creazione, infatti, sono molti:

individuiamo i protagonisti del gusto, eletti dai media che fanno tendenza, con l’aiuto dei futurologi e delle reti internazionali di trend setter.

Una volta organizzate concettualmente e visivamente le informazioni, intervengono i nostri grandi “traduttori” (ovvero gli artisti del make up e i packaging designer) che danno forma alle idee, giocando con la densità, la lucidità, la texture e i colori della materia. Infine conclude Dominique con una punta di malizia - ci resta “solo” da convincere il marketing della bontà delle nostre intuizioni, discutendone la portata dal punto di vista commerciale e l’efficacia nel conquistare i diversi target di consumatori».

Ugualmente, mi sono stupita del passaparola che nello stesso momento ha portato tanti punk ad ammirare i particolari degli abiti di Vivienne Westwood, in mostra a Londra».

Ed è proprio pensando al gusto rinnovato per i dettagli che “fanno stile” che, per il Natale 2004, Estée Lauder si è ispirata a Gustav Klimt, sontuoso interprete di un’Art Déco sfavillante di oro e decori, armoniosamente e meticolosamente composti.

Pensare diverso. Oggi, per Dominique Szabo, dopo molto trash, ricorre insistente una parola: eleganza. Che significa? «Che la gente è stanca di dover tradurre necessariamente lussuoso con esagerazione, stile con prezzo. Ma è anche stanca di girare in uniforme, con le stesse scarpe e le stesse borse firmate. Così fioriscono i libri di bon ton e di norme che “insegnano” il gusto e la misura più classici, fatti di discrezione e buone finiture, proporzioni e dettagli. In questo contesto non stupisce il rinnovato interesse per il fai-da-te, ad esempio nell’interior design, come pure nell’abbigliamento o nella cura delle piante, perché produce mescolanza di stili più o meno ortodossi e valorizza il “tocco personale”».

What does the Estée Lauder trend team look at and how do they work to design new beauty.

What stuff are those dreams made of, dreams of women and evermore now of men, called beauty products? Where do they start off from and how does the make-up designer get his or her direction in the great river into which stimuli, style and trends flow in a world without barriers (to knowing) or (perhaps) great secrets?

The answer given by Dominique Szabo, Senior Vice President Trends of the new Estée Lauder Trend Team, is concise: «they have to know, see, touch, smell… and, aboveall observe, observe and yet again observe… They have to absorb all like a sponge; then you “squeeze” yourselves and you have your trend».

Easy to express, but tricky to put it into practise.

Certainly it is difficult, at least for the unlimited quantity of stimuli that the culture industry continuously produces; and woe in neglecting the “alternative” expressions of the young tribes and the many changing subgroups of society.

A practise, one has the suspicion, that has to be supported by a well-trained sensibility, made up of nature and biography, of will and action, as well as

concludes wryly –“all” we have to do is to convince marketing that our intuitions are good, discuss the commercial scope and the effectiveness in conquering the different target of consumers».

Think different. Today, for Dominique Szabo, after a lot of trash, one word insistently rings out: elegance. What does that mean? That people are tired of necessarily translating luxury with exaggeration, style with price. But they are also sick of going around in uniform, with the same designer shoes and bags. Thus a welter of books on bon ton and rules are doing the rounds, that “teach” taste and the most classic measures, made of discretion and good finishing, proportions and details. In this context the renewed interest for doit-yourself is not surprising, for example in interior design, as in clothing and plant care, because it produces mixes of style that are more or less orthodox and highlights the “personal touch”.

Hence on the one hand one has nostalgia for lost rules, for an equilibrium that has been too long refused; on the other the craving for freedom, experience and expression. Contrasts that are recomposed in the facts of life, and that create the new, what aboveall the new generations recognize as such: «I was struck by the quantity of young people that visited the Paris show dedicated to Schiapparelli, who came to admire his marvellous creations of tailoring. As well as that I was amazed at the word of mouth that at the same time brought so many punks to admire the clothes of Vivienne Westwood, on show at London». And it is thinking of the very renewed taste for the details that “set style”, that for Christmas 2004 Estée Lauder has drawn inspiration from Gustav Klimt, sumptuous interpreter of Jugendstil and sparkling with gold and déco, harmoniously and meticulously composed.

ongoing passion. This at least was what Dominique Szabo suggested to us in a friendly conversation, filling us in on the most recent Estée Lauder products. Those that, without betraying the grandmothers and mothers, are conquering the latest generations: small cubes that look like ice, containing mirrors and surprising creamy makeups, the latest eyeliners and the Pure Color lip colors, with their slim pens and long stilos for dipping in the bottle-cum-inkpot. And also, Electric lipsticks inspired by the highest skyscrapers in the world and Blush, born out of a study of the color works of Victor Vasarely, leading light of optical art.

And lastly, the products of the collection that we will only see in due course (the Estée designers are already thinking about winter 2005) that will be inspired – Dominique Szabo tells us – by the fantasies of zoomorphical architecture, by the weighty immobility of Edward Hopper and who knows what other ancient practises and popular customs, films, decors, photographs and clothes.

More than a river! It is an ocean of stimuli where the risk of losing oneself is great. How is one to choose? How does one tell the new from the copy, the ephemeral from the longlasting, what will set a trend from what is, perhaps unwittingly, imitation?

«The criteria for selecting the trends and the following development of products are essentially determined by the identity of our customers and the coherence of our company image and constitute the material of a great choral operation.

The acts and the actors of the ideal chain of creation are in fact many: we cite the protagonists of taste, elected by the “media” that set the trends, with the help of “futurologists” and the international networks of trend setters. Once the information has been conceptually and visually organised, our skilled “translators” intervene (or that is make-up artists and packaging designers) that give shape to the ideas, playing with density, gloss, texture and the colors of the material. GUERRILLA STORE moda temporanea e ribelle Non è facile sapere quale sarà il prossimo, non si sa dove sarà né quando aprirà. Non ci saranno insegne e sarà difficile riconoscerlo, perché, più che un negozio, sembrerà un magazzino, un deposito-merci provvisorio dove imballaggi, scatoloni, fogli di bollato, buste, faranno le veci di tavoli, mensole, cassettiere. È nata l’anti-boutique, il negozio no-global: è Guerrilla Store, un nuovo concetto di retailing ideato da Adrian Joffe e Rei Kawakubo, la mente pensante di Comme des garçon. Il senso è quello di offrire spazi per la vendita della griffe trasversali e solo per un tempo determinato. E così, quanto è breve la durata di una collezione, tanto è precaria l’installazione del negozio. Al termine della sua esistenza lo Store chiuderà per rinascere in un altro luogo. Guerriglia, rapidità, provvisorietà, mobilità, praticità, sorpresa sono termini che ritornano spesso nel linguaggio giovanile e underground e ad esso si ispirano i Guerrilla Store che, in modo sovversivo e rivoluzionario rispetto ai tradizionali sistemi di vendita, aprono e chiudono nel giro di un anno (persino se avranno successo, che oltraggio!), occupano locali dimessi (strizzando l’occhio al più classico degli stili squatter) o prendono il posto di altri negozi - il primo, quello aperto a Berlino lo scorso febbraio, era una libreria - riducendo al minimo le spese di gestione: nessuna insegna, nessuna ristrutturazione, arredi provvisori fatti con materiali poveri e nessuna pubblicità, tranne la stampa di pochi manifesti che daranno le prime informazioni. Il resto - sarà come andare ad un rave - è tutto un passaparola.

It is not easy knowing what the next one will be nor where or when it will open. There won’t be signs up outside, and it will be difficult to recognise because, more than a shop, it will look like a warehouse, a storage depot where packaging, boxes, bubble sheets, bags replace tables, shelves and chest-ofdrawers. The anti-boutique has come into being, the no-global shop. Guerrilla Store, a new concept in retailing created by Adrian Joffre and Rei Kawakubo, the mind behind Comme des garçon. The idea is to offer space for selling alternative labels and only for a given time. And thus, the precariousness of the installation of the shop runs hand in hand with how long a collection lasts. When its function runs out the Store will close to open up elsewhere. Guerrilla action, rapidity, temporariness, mobility, practicality, surprise are terms that turn up time and time again in young people’s and underground jargon, and this is what has inspired Guerilla Store that, in a subversive and revolutionary way compared to traditional sales systems, open up and close down in a year (even if successful, shame on them!), they are opened in abandoned buildings (cocking a wink at the most classical squatter style) or take the place of other shops - the first, opened in Berlin last February, was a initially bookstore - reducing running costs down to a minimum: no shop signs, no restructuring, provisory finishings and fittings made out of “poor” material and no advertising, apart from the printing off of a few flyers giving their whereabouts. The rest - like going to a rave party - is all by word of mouth.

Chi è Ora-Ïto? Ma forse sarebbe meglio dire, cosa è Ora-Ïto? Da qualche tempo, infatti, oggetti, pubblicità, videoclip, eventi e, naturalmente, tanto packaging, sono accompagnati da questo enigmatico nome-marchio.

Ora-Ïto ha il volto sbarazzino e l’ardire spregiudicato di un giovane creativo parigino, ma il corpo, o meglio, la struttura, di uno studio professionale pluridisciplinare in cui si progetta di tutto: dal design alla grafica, dalla pubblicità alla comunicazione, all’immagine di marca, dall’architettura d’interni ai siti web e ai videoclip. Eppure lui, Ïto, il capo carismatico del gruppo, non ha neppure concluso gli studi alla ESDI, la scuola superiore di disegno industriale di Parigi, pensando bene di inseguire e realizzare subito il suo sogno: diventare un marchio globale di design. Aveva solo 21 anni quando ha deciso di creare un’etichetta indipendente e poiché voleva farlo con il minor investimento economico possibile, ha iniziato progettando oggetti virtuali: «Quando ho

cominciato come Ora-Ïto ho usato il mio sito web per presentare prodotti non veri ma dall’aspetto estremamente realistico: la collezione di orologi For You, un anello, un profumo chiamato Odora-ïto; ma c’era anche il progetto reale di uno spray ricaricabile da viaggio per L’Oréal».

Così facendo, Ïto, ha creato la prima “marca virtuale”, una piccola rivoluzione nel design, perché fino ad allora nessuno aveva avuto il coraggio di proporre simulacri di merci in vendita.

Poi si è spinto oltre e si è autoproclamato art director delle più famose marche del lusso, utilizzandone spudoratamente i loghi e lanciando nella rete e nel futuro il loro universo iconografico e oggettuale. Senza che queste ne sapessero nulla ha realizzato i progetti che più lo intrigavano, tra cui: l’avveniristico zaino-borsa marchiato Vuitton (tanto “vero” da essere persino falsificato in Asia); la carta di credito Blue Visa a riconoscimento digitale; il portatile Apple Hack-Mac

sovversione è ancora un aspetto importante della mia identità. Le aziende mi contattano perché sanno che offrirò loro un punto di vista originale e che sarò in grado di rappresentare la loro immagine e il loro universo in modo efficace. Pur mantenendo lo spirito tipico della marca, la arricchisco con un aspetto sorprendente, originale e di alta qualità. Le aziende conoscono i miei futuristici prodotti 3D e vogliono possederne il tocco; spesso mi danno carta bianca e si avvicinano così al nostro mondo di oggetti e di immagini, di creazione e sovversione.

Questo conferisce loro un aspetto moderno e di tendenza».

Ora-Ïto ha un approccio al progetto trasversale e globale, assolutamente non specialistico:

in puro stile camouflage; una villa per Gucci; scarpe per Nike.

Oggetti tanto belli quanto irreperibili, che però molte riviste hanno pubblicato e che molti lettori, non riconoscendoli come virtuali, hanno cercato di acquistare per davvero.

Correva l’anno 1998.

Tuttavia, dopo il disorientamento iniziale, le aziende coinvolte non se la sono presa troppo. Più che di ironica blague, si trattava, in fondo, di un omaggio al loro design, e poiché gli oggetti erano assai gradevoli e i giornali ne parlavano spesso, il tutto si è tradotto anche in una enorme pubblicità.

A quel punto anche le ultime reticenze si sono placate, trasformandosi ben presto in veri incarichi di lavoro e consacrando definitivamente Ora-Ïto alla realtà della materia e del business.

Era il 2001.

Oggi Ïto agisce su tutti i fronti. Ha curato campagne pubblicitarie per Levi’s e Cappellini, un sito web per Kenzo, una serie di gadget per Alfa Romeo: «Ho realizzato diversi “veri” progetti, come la bottiglia di birra per Heineken, il profumo per Adidas e quello per Joop!, l’interior design del Cab (un club molto esclusivo di Parigi), lampade per Artemide, e stiamo attualmente lavorando su molto altro ancora. Tuttavia la

«Non posso immaginarmi a disegnare sedie tutti i giorni. Rispetto questo lavoro, ma io non potrei farlo.

Preferisco lavorare in molti ambiti.

Ora-Ïto è un universo, composto da spazi, prodotti, suoni, immagini, qualcosa di virtuale e qualcosa di reale. Il nostro pensiero si snoda attraverso la falsificazione dei codici canonici del design e della comunicazione, saltando i confini tra realtà ed immaginazione».

Ora-Ïto progetta utilizzando liberamente tutte le possibilità offerte dalla tecnologia digitale. Lavora come un DJ, facendo sampling, cioè sminuzzando e assemblando pezzi di cultura del progetto, parti di architettura e design - «un po’ di Wright, un po’ di Niemeyer e Le Corbusier» - che vengono poi riorganizzati in modo originale e quasi irriconoscibile. In questo modo è capace di rinnovare un marchio con una visione più tecnologica e contemporanea.

«L’approccio è simile sia quando

disegno una sedia che una bottiglia di profumo. Si comincia con un’idea basata su un concetto solido, e questa è la parte più importante del lavoro, si pensa all’utilizzo dell’oggetto, alla forma e al materiale più adatto. Poi facciamo alcuni schizzi e verifichiamo il concept in conformità ai limiti e alle possibilità del progetto. Infine ci serviamo di sofisticati software 3D per modellare in modo preciso la forma dell’oggetto e sperimentare diverse superfici, materiali, colori. Ad esempio, per la bottiglia di profumo Adidas, una fragranza giovane e sportiva, ho provato a realizzare la forma più logica da tenere facilmente in mano: avvolto da un guscio di plastica, il flacone è protetto da qualunque danneggiamento. Si può tenere facilmente in tasca, portare in giro, sfilare in un secondo, è estremamente semplice da usare con il suo dispenser laterale a pressione».

Nel 2002 Ora-Ïto vince il Packaging Award con la bottiglia di alluminio

della birra Heineken. Racconta il designer: «L’idea di partenza era creare una bottiglia dall’aspetto contemporaneo e lussuoso, pensata per giovani consumatori, una nuova nicchia di mercato tutta da esplorare.

Abbiamo disegnato un oggetto che corrispondesse alle loro attese e abbiamo optato per un design sobrio e chic, una bottiglia al 100% di alluminio che, pur rispettando la tradizionale identità Heineken, proiettasse la birra in una dimensione glamour e futuristica».

Per la nota marca Ïto ha disegnato la grafica dell’etichetta, il booklet e il cd rom interattivo per la stampa; ha ideato il “Gelulo-Fresh”, thermos a forma di capsula per conservare la bottiglia di alluminio alla temperatura ideale e “Carry and open”, un vassoio di metallo per trasportare più birre e consentirne l’apertura con una sola mano e senza apribottiglie.

Attualmente Ora-Ito è sempre più reale, ormai i suoi sogni si sono concretizzati e i progetti sono diventati oggetti tangibili e, soprattutto, acquistabili.

L’agenda del nostro pirata-designer è fitta di impegni: nell’immediato futuro disegnerà cosmetici per L’Oréal, mobili e arredi per B&B e Cappellini, una nuova bottiglia per Heineken, oltre a una linea di valigie, un ristorante, vari siti web e persino le scenografie di un set televisivo. Dal virtuale al reale e dal reale al virtuale.

Who is Ora-Ïto?But one might be better off asking, what is Ora-Ïto? For some time in fact, objects, advertising, videoclips, events and, naturally, a lot of packaging have all come to bear this enigmatic brandname.

Ora-Ïto has the perky face and the reckless daring of a young Parisian designer, but the body, or better still, the structure of a multidisciplinary professional studio that is prepared to tackle almost anything: from design to graphics, from advertising to communication to brand image, from interior design to websites and videoclips. And to think that its founder, Ïto, charismatic head of the group, has not even finish his studies at the ESDI - the Paris School of Industrial Design - set as he was on wasting no time in turning his dream into reality: namely to become a global design brand. He was only 21 years old when he decided to create an independent brand and since he wanted to invest as little money as possible, he began by designing virtual objects: “When I began as Ora-Ïto I used my website to present products that didn’t actually exist, but that looked extremely realistic all the same: the For You collection of watches, a ring, a perfume named Odora-Ïto; but I also presented the real design for a rechargeable travel spray for L’Oréal”.

Doing so Ïto created the first “virtual brand”, a mini

design revolution, because up to now noone has ever had the courage to offer sham goods for sale.

But he went beyond that and self-proclaimed himself art director of the most famous luxury brands, impudently using their logos and launching their iconographical and object universe onto the net and into the future. Without their knowing anything about it he created the projects that intriqued him the most, among which: the futuristic rucksack-bag bearing the Vuiton brand (so “real” they are forging it in Asia); the Blue Visa digital recognition credit card; the Apple Hack-Mac portable in full camouflage style; a villa for Gucci; Nike shoes.

Objects as beautiful as they are impossible to find, that though many magazines have published and that many readers, not recognising them as virtual, have actually tried to buy. All this in 1998.

All the same, after some initial disorientation, the companies concerned weren’t all that offended.

More than an ironic joke, Ïto’s activity was really a homage to their design, and since the objects were appealing and the press talked a lot about them, it all turned into huge publicity.

At that point the last reservations were overcome and soon turned into job offers, definitively consecrating Ora-Ïto to subject reality and to business. We are now in the year 2001.

Today Ïto is advancing on all fronts. He has directed advertising campaigns for Levis and Cappelllini, designed a website for Kenzo and a series of gadgets for Alfa Romeo: “I have created a series of ‘real’ projects, like the Heineken beer bottle, perfumes for Adidas and Joop!, interior design of the Cab (an exclusive Paris club), lights for Artemide, and we are currently working on many other projects. All the same subversion is still an important part of my identity. Companies contact me because they know that I offer an original point of view and that I will be able to effectively represent their image and their universe.

All this while keeping the typical spirit of the brand, that I enhance by imbuing the same with a surprising, original and high quality appeal. The concerns have seen my futuristic 3D projects and want that kind of touch; they often give me carte blanche and thus come closer to our world of objects and images, of creation and subversion, thus giving them a modern, trendy appeal”.

Ora-Ïto has a very transversal and global project approach that is absolutely unspecialised: “I can’t see myself designing chairs all the time. I respect those that do so, but I couldn’t do it.

I prefer working across the board. Ora-Ïto is a universe made up of spaces, products, sounds, images, it’s virtual yet real at the same time. Our philosophy unwinds forging the canonical codes of design and communication, crossing the borders between reality and imagination.

Ora-Ïto does his design work freely using all the possibilities offered by digital technology. He works like a DJ, sampling or that is breaking up and assembling pieces of design culture, bits of architecture and design – “A bit of Wright, a bit of Niemeyer a bit of Le Corbusier” – that are then reorganised in an original, almost unrecognizable manner. Thus he is capable of renewing a brand giving it a more technological and contemporary appeal.

“The approach is similar whether you are designing a chair or a perfume bottle. Your start with an idea based on a solid concept, and this is the most important part of the work, one thinks of how the object is used and the most suitable shape of the material. We then make some sketches and check the concept in conformity to the limits and the possibilities of the project. Lastly, we use sophisticated 3D software for modeling the shape and experiment with different surfaces, materials, colors. For example, for the Adidas perfume bottle, a young and sporty fragrance, I tried to create the

most logical shape, easy to hold in ones hand: clad in a plastic shell, the bottle is protected from any damage. One can easily carry it in ones pocket, pull it out in a second, it is extremely simple to use with its lateral pressure dispenser”.

In 2002 Ora-Ïto won the Packaging Award for the Heineken beer bottle. The designer tells us: “The initial idea was to create a bottle with a contemporary, luxury appeal, designed for young consumers, a new market niche to be explored. We designed an object that meets their expectations and we opted for a sober and chic design, a 100% aluminium bottle that, while respecting the traditional Heineken identity, gives beer a glamorous, futuristic identity”. Ïto designed the Heineken label graphics, the booklet and the interactive CD rom for the press; he created “Gellulo-Fresh”, the capsule-shaped thermos for keeping the aluminium bottle at the right temperature and “Carry and Open”, a metal tray for transporting several bottles of beer at a time, enabling their opening single handed without using a bottle opener. Currently, Ora-Ïto is becoming more-and-more real, by now his dreams have become reality and his design projects have today become tangible, and aboveall purchasable.

Our pirate-designer’s company is full of commitments: in the near future the concern will design cosmetics for L’Oréal, furniture and interiors for B&B and Cappellini, a new bottle for Heineken, as well as a line of cases, a restaurant, various websites and even the design of a set for TV. From virtual to real and real to virtual, things have now turned full circle.

Il “Packaging Design” ha ampio spazio nell’ambito dei diversi percorsi formativi proposti dal Corso di Laurea in Disegno Industriale dell’Università di Roma “La Sapienza”, sia negli atelier e nei corsi di Grafica e Comunicazione Visiva, sia in quelli di Product Design, sia in quelli di Ecodesign. Nei diversi laboratori di progettazione il packaging è sempre considerato componente inscindibile dal prodotto e dalla sua strategia complessiva di comunicazione e, nei diversi corsi, di volta in volta, vengono studiati e approfonditi i differenti aspetti che ne influenzano e determinano il design: da quelli relativi alla comunicazione dell’identità del prodotto e del brand, a quelli riferiti alle caratteristiche tecnicofunzionali e di servizio e ai materiali innovativi, a quelli che

riguardano i requisiti di ecocompatibilità, salubrità e sicurezza.

Inoltre, il Corso di Laurea in Disegno Industriale di Roma, che celebra quest’anno il suo decimo anniversario, ha istituito, fin dalla sua fondazione, alcuni “orientamenti professionali”, ovvero differenti indirizzi, tra i quali lo studente può scegliere, caratterizzanti l’ultima parte della sua formazione che include, tra l’altro, un periodo di tirocinio obbligatorio presso imprese, enti o studi professionali. Tra i diversi “orientamenti”, quello in “Qualità

ed Ecoefficienza del prodotto industriale”, che ha la finalità di fornire agli studenti le conoscenze tecniche e metodologiche per ottimizzare e incrementare le performance ambientali di prodotti e sistemi di prodotti lungo tutte le fasi del loro ciclo di vita, pone particolare attenzione al design del packaging primario, secondario e terziario. Tema nodale per questo “Orientamento”, soprattutto per l’importanza ambientale che i rifiuti da imballaggio hanno assunto negli ultimi anni, il progetto del packaging viene affrontato secondo i criteri dell’Ecodesign, considerando soprattutto la sua natura di prodotto di breve durata e la sua componente prestazionale e di servizio, senza però trascurare la dimensione comunicativa ed estetica. Quest’anno, ad esempio, il tema progettuale “Eco & Bio Design”, proposto dall’Orientamento e supportato da Comieco, AIAB e COOP, è stato l’occasione per lo sviluppo di soluzioni innovative di packaging mirate a valorizzare gli aspetti qualitativi e culturali dei prodotti biologici, food e nonfood, lungo tutta la filiera dal produttore al distributore al consumatore.

Packaging Design is given broad scope within the various courses of the “La Sapienza” University of Rome Industrial Design course, both in the ateliers and in the Graphics and Visual Communications courses as well as in Product Design and Ecodesign. In the various design workshops the packaging component is as ever considered as inseparable from the product, and from the overall communication strategy of the same. In the various courses, the different aspects that influence and determine packaging design are studied as the case has it: from aspects covering product identity and brand communication to technical-functional and service features, from those covering innovative materials, to eco-compatibility, salubriousness and safety requisites.

Furthermore, right from its founding the Rome Industrial Design Degree course, that this year celebrates its tenth anniversary, instituted “professional orientations”, or that is a series of specific courses for the last part of the students training which the student can choose from, that among other things include a period of obligatory training in firms, bodies or professional studios.

Among the various courses, that of “Quality and Ecoefficiency of the industrial product” has the purpose of providing the students with the technical and methodological knowhow to optimise and increase the environmental performance of products and product systems throughout their entire lifecycle,

paying particular attention to the design of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging. The packaging project is tackled following Ecodesign criteria, the key theme for this course, aboveall due the environmental importance that packaging waste has taken on over these last years, aboveall considering packaging’s nature as a short-term product and its performance and service content, without all the same overlooking its communicative and aesthetic side. Hence, material used reduced to the minimum, use of recycled or biodegradable material, a monomaterial approach, container-content optimisatioin, stackabililty, compactabililty, reusability, recyclability, compostabililty, are some the design objectives pursued by the students to define packaging of a high technical performance and of low environmental impact. Each year course didactics are organized according to a project theme, this being chosen by way of a full internal competition defined in cooperation with the companies, consortiums and bodies that provide the technical support. In particular, as far as Packaging Design is concerned, the cooperation with trade consortiums like Corepla, Rilegno and aboveall Comieco has been a great success. This year for example, the project theme “Eco & Bio Design”, proposed by Course Orientation and above all by Comieco, AIAB and Coop, was the occasion for the development of innovatory packaging solutions aimed at enhancing the qualitative and cultural aspect of biological products, both food and nonfood, this along the entire chain of the sector from the producer to the distributor right down to the consumer.

Sacchi di Farina

Quanto possono essere colorati, decorativi e originali i sacchi di farina, imballaggi semplici ma dall’aspetto variegato e molteplice, contenitori dell’alimento più importante del mondo?

Lo racconta una recente pubblicazione Die schöne Hülle des Mehls, (Il bel packaging della farina) curata dallo studio Ondesign di Amburgo e in particolare da Olav Jünke e Francalma Nieddu. Il libro raccoglie la collezione privata dei sacchi di farina dell’azienda Muehlenchemie (del gruppo Wywiol, produttore di additivi per farine e lieviti) e racconta l’evoluzione del sacco come packaging, a partire dalla sua forma più primordiale, in juta, fino a quella attuale in plastica.

Una storia raccontata per immagini, un percorso oltre che grafico anche geografico (i paesi di provenienza della farina, spesso lontani ed esotici) e commerciale (le varie tipologie di prodotto), commentata dalle riflessioni del collezionista-proprietario, dello storico e del giornalista di settore.

Per la copertina è stato riprodotto uno dei sacchi più vecchi della collezione, dove i disegni e il lettering sono ricamati a mano.

A completamento del progetto è stato creato uno speciale packaging per il libro stesso: in due differenti formati di borsine ricavate da sacchi di farina esistenti e, come tali, uniche ed originali.

Die schöne Hülle des Mehls è solo il preludio ad una successiva pubblicazione prevista entro fine anno presso il Museo del Lavoro di Amburgo, in concomitanza con una mostra-evento e grazie all’ampliamento della collezione stessa.

How colored, decorative and original can flour bags be, simple packaging of a varied appearance, the most important food containers the world over?

This is the essence of a recent publication Die schöne Hülle des Mehls (the fine packaging of flour) by the Ondesign studio of Hamburg and in particular by Olav Jünke and Francalma Nieddu. The book shows the private collection of flour sacks of the company Muehlenchemie (a Wywiol group concern, producer of additives for flour and yeasts) and tells of the evolution of the bag as packaging, starting off from its original form, in jute, up to the current versions in plastic.

A story told in pictures, a graphic as well as geographic tale (the countries of origin of the flour being very often distant and exotic) as well as commercial (the various types of product), commented by the reflections of the collectorowner, historian and journalist of the sector.

The cover is a reproduction of one of the oldest sacks in the collection, where images and lettering are hand embroidered. A special packaging for the book itself has been created to complement the project: in two different formats of bags made of existing flour sacks and, as such, unique and original.

Die schöne Hülle des Mehls is only a prelude to another publication scheduled for publication by the end of the year at the Museum of Labour, Hamburg, in line with a show-event and thanks to the broadening of the that selfsame collection.

Lungo la strada percorsa dal “cucchiaio alla città”, il design ha incontrato il packaging.

Un incontro inevitabile, perché anche gli oggetti dal disegno più radicale possono diventare merci, ma affinché la trasformazione si compia devono viaggiare dal produttore verso il consumatore.

Una sorta di sacro pellegrinaggio, che necessita di protezione.

Questa protezione, nelle mani dei designer, si veste d’altro: le superfici di una scatola diventano presto comunicazione, le sue forme si fanno performance e la semplice funzione diventa rappresentazione di contenuti.

Per questo il packaging dei cosiddetti prodotti di design è spesso un “replicante” (alla Blade Runner), una specie di organismo dotato d’identità propria che raddoppia la progettualità dell’oggetto contenuto.

Ipotesi o desiderio, il progetto globale nascosto “nel cucchiaio e nella città” ha superato i limiti del puro funzionalismo per approdare anche all’immagine e alla citazione, come ci ha spiegato Philip Starck con la sua Miss Sissi. salvezza) dell’arte, del design… del progetto tout-court.

Dobbiamo dedurne che le scatole di design non sono neutri contenitori? È possibile, perché portano in giro, stampato sulla propria pelle una parte del messaggio. Quale? Quello che ogni autore sogna di inviare ai suoi anonimi (perché è impossibile conoscerli tutti) consumatori/interlocutori.

Non per caso molti di noi amano la macchina per scrivere Valentine (1969) di Ettore Sottsass. Quella valigetta anonima e colorata non era il solito packaging usa e getta, bensì un pezzo del progetto complessivo che voleva finalmente sdrammatizzare l’oggetto da ufficio.

Precorrendo in modo quasi magico i tempi, la Valentine e il suo contenitore suggerivano un uso più

fa, è dotata, più che di un packaging, di una vera e propria cornice. Leziosa e ammiccante, la scatola, con finestra sagomata, dichiara infatti che l’oggetto contenuto è, prima di tutto, una citazione, la rilettura di uno stereotipo proveniente dal passato.

Questo packaging/cornice è perciò simile a un contesto che esalta il testo/oggetto e, come il buon progetto grafico di una pagina scritta, sostiene l’azione del lettore, figura ben diversa dal banale consumatore.

L’aspetto di questa scatola stimola l’utente finale, spingendolo a un’interpretazione attiva del progetto piuttosto che a una fruizione passiva del prodotto. E così, nel suo piccolo, il packaging aderisce al sogno di chi vede nell’opera interattiva il futuro (o la

libero della macchina, proprio com’è accaduto con gli attuali computer portatili ed i palmari.

Grazie alla Valentine e al suo inseparabile contenitore, molti scoprirono che è possibile scrivere relazioni aziendali, poesie e racconti sul futuro, anche in giardino.

Del resto, il viaggio, per breve che sia, è uno degli stimoli più intriganti per i progettisti. Pochi mesi fa Alessi ha presentato il progetto Vengo anch’io, firmato da Naoko Shintani.

Sono ciotole, in carta plastificata, utili per fornire pasti e bevande a cani e gatti durante i viaggi. Le ciotole sono realizzate come un origami che si monta facilmente nel momento del bisogno, dopo l’uso può tornare ad appiattirsi in borse e valigie. Ogni confezione contiene dieci pezzi ridotti ad un piccolo parallelepipedo, grazie alla fustellatura della carta.

Sfruttando le caratteristiche del materiale (lo stesso per contenuto e contenitore) il progetto del packaging prevede che le ciotole siano “legate” alla confezione/supporto e che solo prima dell’uso siano “strappate” lungo la classica linea tratteggiata.

Il protagonista del progetto è naturalmente la carta che, in barba ai più futuristici materiali hi-tech, riesce a realizzare una specie di utopia: l’oggetto che scivola nel

packaging (e viceversa) senza apparente soluzione di continuità, e solo al momento dell’utilizzo rivela la sua totale autonomia.

In realtà è piuttosto raro che il designer progetti anche il packaging del suo prodotto, ma più che un problema questo può diventare l’occasione per sperimentare una rara forma di progettazione collettiva.

La linea di complementi per la casa Prêt à porter, disegnata dallo Studio D’Urbino Lomazzi nel 1994 per Zerodisegno, era dotata di un packaging, da questo punto di vista, particolarmente emblematico.

Si trattava di piccoli pezzi d’arredo che, una volta ripiegati, potevano essere facilmente trasportati. «Ci astenemmo dal progetto delle scatole - racconta oggi Paolo Lomazzi - ma seguimmo il lavoro di Marco Giunta, che sviluppò il packaging dell’intera collezione, e di Italo Lupi che ne firmò invece il progetto grafico. Noi siamo stati i coordinatori dell’intera operazione, e ancora oggi penso che questa specie di triumvirato, benché composto da personalità diverse tra loro, riuscì a esprimere esattamente lo spirito della collezione.»

Osserviamo il packaging del tavolino Clap o dell’appendiabiti Octopus: la confezione che lascia una parte del prodotto in vista è

emblematica perché in un colpo solo mostra l’oggetto, il packaging e il progetto grafico, raccontando non solo la presenza di ben tre progetti all’interno dello stesso prodotto ma anche l’ipotesi di una performance (apertura e chiusura dell’oggetto). È possibile insomma che il packaging “di design” diventi territorio di vera sperimentazione, quando in esso si fondono, o si scontrano, saperi diversi, per sviluppare un oggetto obbligato a dare molte risposte. Basti pensare che, oltre ai desideri dei designer, le confezioni esposte nei punti vendita devono, per esempio, comunicare la marca, lo “spirito-guida” della produzione. Il tema è, dal punto di vista aziendale, particolarmente delicato ed è ovvio che, in questo caso, il fattore immagine-coordinata piomba come un ciclone sul packaging, perché l’oggetto deve essere subito riconoscibile, anche tra molti prodotti.

Quando la merce è un oggetto ad alto contenuto progettuale, gli elementi costitutivi del packaging

sembrano insomma moltiplicarsi in modo quasi esponenziale. Ma questo “moltiplicatore progettuale” non pensiamo coincida con l’utopistico progetto globale, sognato dal moderno. Perché più che la conclusione di un discorso lineare, più che la somma di elementi omogenei, fortunatamente il packaging sembra essere figlio del caos: una specie di colonia perfettamente funzionante ma costituita da numerose diversità che, aggregandosi, creano ordine.

Lo schema, in un certo senso, ricorda il funzionamento del dna, in grado di generare individui perfettamente sani e autonomi, partendo da cellule diverse, alle volte perfino incompatibili o malate.

Ma come spesso accade ciò che per definizione è male (il caos, la diversità…) porta soluzioni inedite e insperate. Anche a chi pensava che il design fosse destinato a morire di coerenza.

Along the way from the “spoon to the city”, design encountered packaging.

An inevitable encounter, because even the most radical design objects can become goods, but for this transformation to come about they have to travel from producer to consumer. A sort of sacred pilgrimage, that needs protection.

This protection, in the hands of designers, is clad with other things: the surface of a box soon becomes communication, its shape becomes performance and a simple function becomes representation of contents. This is why the packaging of the socalled design product is often a “replicant” (as in Blade Runner), a sort of organism vested with its own identity that doubles the design element of the object contained.

Idea or desire, the global project concealed “in the spoon and in the city” has gone beyond the limits of pure functionalism to also attain identity as image and quotation, as Phillip Starck explained with his Miss Sissi, the colored plastic lampshade that Flos began producing some ten years back, that is more than packaging, fitted out with a frame true and proper. Affected and appealing, the box with its cut-out window in fact declares that the object contained is first and foremost a quotation, a rereading of a stereotype from the past. This packaging/frame is though similar to a context that enhances wording/object, like a good graphic design of a page of writing supports the action of the reader, figure very different from that of the

banal consumer.

The appearance of this box stimulates the end user, thrusting him towards an active interpretation of the project rather than a passive fruition of the same. And thus, in its own little way, packaging is part of the dream of those that see the interactive work as the future (or the saving) of art and design.. of the project itself…

Should we deduce from the same that design boxes are not neutral containers? This may be so, because they circulate with part of the message printed on their own skin. Which part? That which each author dreams of sending to his anonymous (because getting to know all of them would be impossible) consumers/interlocutors.

It is not by chance that many of us love the Valentine (1969) typewriter by Ettore Sottsass.

That anonymous and colored case was not the usual disposable packaging, rather part of the overall project that wanted to finally play down the office object. Almost magical precursor of the times, Valentine and its container suggested a freer use of the machine, as has occurred with today’s portable and palm-held computers. Thanks to Valentine and its inseparable container, many discovered that company reports, poems and tales of the future could also be written in the garden.

And what is more, the journey, never mind how short it is, is one of the most intriguing stimuli for the designer. A few months ago Alessi presented its project Vengo anch’io (I’m coming too), by Naoko Shintani. These are bowls in plastified paper, useful for providing dogs and cats with meals and liquids while on a trip. The bowls are made like an origami that is easy to assemble when it is needed, after its use it can be flattened and put back into a bag or case. Each pack contains ten pieces reduced to a small parallelepiped thanks to the way the plastified paper is diecut.

of true experimentation, when in the same, different knowhows counter each other to develop an object obliged to give many answers. One only has to think that over and above the desires of the designers, the packs shown in the salespoints have to for example communicate the brand, the «guiding-spirit» of the output. The subject matter is from a company point of view particularly delicate and it is obvious that in this case, the coordinated image factor plummets like a hurricane onto the packaging because the object has to be immediately recognisable, also among many products.

When the merchandise is an object with high design content, the constituent elements of the packaging seem all the same to multiply exponentially. But we do not conceive this «project multiplication» as coinciding with the utopian global project, dreamed by the modern. Because, more than the conclusion of a linear discourse, more than the sum of homogeneous elements, fortunately packaging seems to by the child of chaos: a type of colony that functions perfectly but made up of numerous differences that, coming together, create order.

The pattern in a certain sense recalls the functioning of DNA, capable of generating perfectly healthy and independent individuals, starting from different cells, at times even incompatible or ill. But as often happens what by definition is bad (chaos, diversity…) leads to original and unhoped-for solutions. Even for those who thought that design was liable to die of coherence.

Exploiting the characteristics of the material (the same for container and contained) the packaging project lays down that the bowls are “linked” to the pack/support and that only before being used are they “torn” along the classic dotted line. The protagonist of the project is naturally paper that, flying in the face of the most futuristic hi-tech materials, manages to attain a sort of utopia: the object that slips into the packaging (and viceversa) without any apparent break, only revealing its total independence in its moment of use.

In actual fact though it is rare that the designer also designs the packaging for his product, but rather than being a problem this can become the chance for experimenting a rare form of collective design.

The line of complements for the home Prêt à porter designed by the S’Urbion Lomazzi Studio in 1994 for Zerodisegno, came with a packaging that from this point of view was particularly emblematic.

These were small pieces of furnishing that once folded could be easily transported. «We abstained from designing the boxes - Paolo Lomazzi tells us but we followed the work of Marco Giunta, who developed the packaging of the entire collection, and Italo Lupi who signed the graphics. We coordinated the entire operation, and I still think today that this sort of triumvirate, while made up of personalities very different to each other, manages to express the spirit of the collection exactly».

We now take a look at the packaging of the Clap table or the clothes stand Octopus: the pack that leaves part of the product in sight is emblematic because in one and the same time it shows the object, the packaging and the graphic project, recounting not only the presence of as many as three projects inside the same product but also the idea of a performance (opening and closing of the object).

Hence «design» packaging can become the field

italiano – osserva e utilizza contenuti e contenitori di oggetti banali, pronto a inserirli nella sua opera.

Per lui la fase progettuale non costituisce un momento preliminare, l’involucro non è un elemento secondario - il sottobicchiere, la fotocopia di un antico disegno, una scatola di cartone, diventano immediatamente parte integrante del suo lavoro, componenti di un sistema visivo globale in cui tutto può essere espressivamente utile.

Nel lavoro di Calignano involucro e prodotto, ma anche progetto ed oggetto, vengono assemblati fra loro, un unico grande packaging animato al suo interno dalle singole opere.

11:52-44, 2001

È oramai passato molto tempo dalla condanna della creazione artistica nell’era della produzione di massa espressa da Theodor W. Adorno in Teoria critica. La feroce riflessione riguardante le “innovazioni” che non farebbero altro che portare “il segno del sempre uguale sotto un involucro sempre nuovo” resta in parte vera, ma è anche stata scavalcata dalla creatività della nuova scena artistica internazionale. Il punto non è più ciò che è nuovo e inedito, da una parte, e ciò che invece somiglia al “già visto” dall’altra; oggi il punto è proprio l’utilizzo artistico, contaminato da citazioni e “salti” contenutistici, tanto dell’oggetto quotidiano quanto del suo involucro.

Per questa ragione Pierluigi Calignano - che appartiene a quella generazione emergente decisa a trasformare il linguaggio artistico

Si ha lʼimpressione che la tua ricerca stia procedendo verso una maggiore progettualità: lo si vede chiaramente nella tua recente mostra alla Galleria Guido Carbone di Torino. È vero: nella mia ultima personale, intitolata Due Punti, ho cercato di evidenziare maggiormente il motivo conduttore che unisce i miei lavori e che può essere identificato proprio col concetto di “progetto”, nel senso più ampio del termine. Mi sono soffermato di meno sull’aspetto manuale del lavoro per privilegiare quello progettuale e percettivo; ho dato molta importanza a quelli che sono i momenti di passaggio nella realizzazione di un oggetto artistico, utilizzando i materiali più elementari.

Per farti un esempio: ho fatto un grande mandala incollando sul muro dei sotto-torta di tre colori e dimensioni diverse. Nel realizzarlo ho semplicemente seguito il giustapporsi casuale e geometrico dei tre “cerchietti colorati” in modo centrifugo, per poi vederne il risultato solo alla fine. Per me, in quei casi, la cosa importante non è tanto il lavoro finito quanto il concatenarsi di quella serie di fatti che mi portano ad ottenerlo. In alcuni lavori precedenti come Da 4 a 5 o 11:52-44 l’aspetto

progettuale è molto forte e chiuso su se stesso. Ora invece sto cercando di includere nel progetto anche un po’ di casualità. Quello che al momento mi interessa è lavorare non tanto sul risultato finale, quanto su quello che ci sta intorno.

Come è avvenuto questo cambio di direzione teorica e pratica?

Come se niente fosse. Questo spostamento non è tanto un cambiamento nel mio percorso di ricerca, è semplicemente un modo diverso di esplorarlo. Ripensando alle mie precedenti mostre forse non sono mai stato così coerente e omogeneo nella scelta dei lavori.

Mi sono trovato a lavorare su progetti molto improntati sul disegno, sul segno, sulla percezione di piccoli elementi fino ad ora presi in considerazione solo marginalmente.

In un lavoro intitolato 15 psichedelici guardano il muro ho cercato di trasformare il colore in un segno ritmico luminoso sulla parete ottenuto girando verso il muro 15 faretti in fila per terra, che si accendono e spengono in base ai rumori presenti nella stanza. Fare questo tipo di operazioni è spiazzante per difetto...

A me servono per evidenziare alcuni aspetti, anche demenziali, del mio lavoro.

Il progetto fa parte dellʼoggetto artistico che poi andrai a realizzare o, a volte, è lʼoggetto artistico stesso?

Tutt’e due. Gli incontri che faccio con gli oggetti quotidiani (stura-lavandini, ruote, lampadine, contenitori vari, frullatori, libri, fumetti, sedie) o i materiali (legno, cartone, carta, spago, colle varie) che poi utilizzerò nell’opera, sono ininterrotti e stimolati dal mio gusto personale. Lo stesso avviene in un certo senso con ciò che riguarda più strettamente la logica interna del progetto dell’opera, il lato più teorico. Per me nulla è svincolato e l’insieme dialoga di continuo. Se un oggetto quotidiano (come un’idea, un disegno, un’immagine) mi piace, lo tengo per inserirlo prima o poi in un qualche lavoro. Cerco sempre di capire che cosa posso farci e come posso utilizzarlo.

Nel tuo lavoro utilizzi spesso materiali bidimensionali che poi diventano tridimensionali (quindi scultorei) al momento dellʼassemblaggio finale...

Mi è venuto naturale da subito: la carta e il cartone sono i materiali con i quali quasi tutti iniziamo a lavorare fin da piccoli, almeno quelli della mia generazione: preferisco ancora progettare con la matita che col mouse. Poi trovo misterioso e affascinante quel passaggio, in apparenza naturale, che va dal disegno alla scultura tridimensionale.

Rendo esplicito questo passaggio piegando direttamente il disegno che faccio trasformandolo in volume, o traforandone i contorni per ottenere una scultura ad incastro (come in Bianco S.Matteo 2), ma è ugualmente interessante fare un disegno su un cartone e piegarlo sulle linee di un altro progetto: si incastrano a vicenda e diventano un’altra cosa ancora.

Il rapporto tra oggetto e involucro è molto presente nei tuoi lavori a partire dai primi robot, passando per le macchine, lʼinstallazione-tenda, fino a giungere alla riproposizione

personalizzata del calice di Paolo Uccello…

Quando eravamo ragazzini, io e i miei amici, avremmo voluto possedere delle cose che chiaramente non potevamo comprare (un catamarano, un carro armato, un grosso robot, una casa su misura), allora ce le costruivamo sul retro della casa di mio cugino con scatole di cartone e legno. Cercavamo di farle il più grandi possibile, in modo da poterci stare dentro comodamente. Da quel momento non ho più smesso. 13, con un po’ di calma, un sommergibile di cartoncino dello spessore di 3 mm lungo 8 metri che ho realizzato qualche tempo fa, è fatto più o meno con questo spirito. Non posso comprarmi un sommergibile? Me lo faccio da solo un po’ più piccolo e spendo meno. Il fatto praticorealizzativo, quello che ti fa ricostruire con mezzi poveri qualcosa di irraggiungibile, mi piace molto, mi sembra un gesto magico. In un altro senso, con 1040 al vapore ho ricostruito in tre dimensioni il calice che Paolo Uccello progettò mezzo millennio fa, cercando tramite il mio lavoro di riallacciare un rapporto non solo sono lo spazio attuale, ma anche con la storia. Quel disegno ha 500 anni e sembra fatto in CAD, è impressionante.

Che differenza cʼè fra il tuo fare artistico e il fare del designer?

Il mio rapporto con gli oggetti d’uso e i loro progetti non verte sulla loro finalità funzionale (anche se mi interessa molto), ma sui possibili ed eventuali altri rapporti che si creano in fase realizzativa. Uno dei lavori che ho presentato a Torino è un disegno realizzato con tanti puntini.

Originariamente era un disegno preparatorio per una scultura che volevo realizzare. E’ stato invece proiettato su un grande foglio che ho successivamente forato lungo le linee, ottenendo così una maschera

che ho passato poi con una bomboletta spray su un altro foglio bianco. Successivamente ho ruotato la maschera e ho passato un altro colore sempre con lo spray. Il risultato finale è stato un disegno a puntini che in realtà è il progetto per un’altra opera non ancora realizzata, il “progetto di un progetto” quasi autoannullante.

Quindi tu segui un percorso progettuale in progressiva definizione…

Si, un’ottica di visione e realizzazione alternativa, vaga ma divertente nella fase sperimentale. Quando progetto qualcosa faccio delle ipotesi e scelgo la più utile al mio fine – a volte però mischio le carte, confondendo le ipotesi o dimenticando il fine. In questo modo spero di trovare percorsi di lavoro nuovi e inediti, almeno per me.

Quanto è importante nella tua ricerca lo spazio nel quale viene inserita lʼopera?

Lo spazio lo vedo ovunque, per me e importantissimo, quindi non lo vedo.

Ovvero è così importante che senza volerlo mi ritrovo spesso a dividerlo in piccole porzioni. A volte i lavori nascono in stretta relazione con lo

spazio circostante, a volte lo spazio determina e definisce il senso stesso di un’opera. Per me è un insieme unico, lavori e spazio, a volte faccio dei lavori non conoscendo lo spazio in cui verranno esposti, a volte li cambio perché non adatti, a volte conosco bene lo spazio ma non i lavori... Insomma, è un bel casino.

A lot of time has gone by since the condemnation of artistic creation in the era of mass production expressed by Theodor W. Adorno in Critical Theory. The ferocious reflection regarding “innovations” that achieve nothing more than bringing “the mark of what is always the same under forever new wrappings” remains partly true, but it has also been superseded by the creativity of the new international art scene. The point is no longer what is new and original, on the one hand, and what resembles the “déjà vu” on the other; today the point is the very artistic use, contaminated by content-laden quotations and “leaps”, of both the object and its wrapping.

This is why Pierluigi Calignano - who belongs to that emerging generation bent on transforming the Italian artistic language - observes and uses contents and containers of banal objects, ready to make them part of his work. For him the design phase is not a preliminary moment, the wrapping is not a secondary element – the beer mat, the photocopy of an antique drawing, a cardboard box, immediately become an

integral part of his work, components of a single great visual system in which everything can be expressively useful.

In Calignano’s work wrapping and product, but also project and object, are assembled together in a unique huge packaging item that thrives on the single works contained within.

One has the impression that your work is proceeding towards a greater planning: this is clearly to be seen in your recent show at the Galleria Guido Carbone, Turin.

This is true: in my last one-man show, entitled Due Punti, I have striven to further highlight the lead theme that ties my works together and that can be identified in the concept of “project”, in the broadest sense of the term. I have paused less over the manual aspect of the work to favor the planning and perceptive side; I have attributed a lot of importance to the various phases in the creation of an art object, using the most elementary materials. To provide an example: I made a huge mandala gluing cake plates of three different colors and of different sizes to the wall. In creating the same I simply followed the chance and geometric juxtaposition of the three “colored circles” in a centrifugal fashion, to only see the result at the end. For me in these instances the important thing is not so much the finished work but rather the chain of series of actions that allows me to obtain the same. In some previous works such as Da 4 a 5 o 11:52-44 the planning side is very strong and closed in on itself. Now though I am trying to also include a bit of chance in the project. What interests me is not so much

working on the final result, but rather on all that surrounds us.

How did this theoretical and practical change of direction come about?

It just came along. This shift is not so much a change in my way of working, it is simply a different way of exploring things. Thinking back again on my preceding shows, perhaps I have never been so coherent and homogenous in the choice of works. I found myself working on projects centring on drawing, on the mark, on the perception of small elements up to now only marginally considered. In a work entitled 15 psichedelici guardano il muro I have tried the transform color into a luminous rhythmic sign on the wall obtained by turning 15 lamps placed in a line on the ground to the wall, that are switched on and off by the noises present in the room. Doing this type of operation throws you wholely askew… I need them to highlight some aspects, even the weirdest ones, of my work.

In your work you often use two dimensional material that then becomes 3D (hence sculptural) at the moment of the final assembly…

This came naturally to me straight away: paper and cardboard are materials with which we all begin to work with right from when we are little, at least those of my generation: I still prefer drawing with the pencil and not using a mouse.

I then found that apparently natural phase when you go from the drawing to the three dimensional sculpture mysterious and fascinating. I make this changeover explicit by directly bending the drawing I do transforming it into volume, or holing the outlines in order to get a sculpture that fits together (like in Bianco S. Matteo 2), but it is equally interesting to make a drawing on cardboard and fold it along the lines of another project: they both reciprocally fit into each other becoming something completely different.

The relation between object and wrapping is very present in your works, starting off from the first robot, going by way of the machines, the installation tent, up to your attainment of a personalised reproposal of Paolo Uccelloʼs chalice…

When we were kids, me and my friends would have liked to have had things we clearly could

Is the project part of the art object that you are intending to create or, at times is it the art object itself.

Both. The encounters I have with everyday objects (plungers, wheels, light-bulbs, various containers, food mixers, books, comics, chairs) or materials (wood, cardboard, paper, string, various glues) that I then go to use in the work, are interrupted and stimulated by my personal taste. The same occurs in a certain sense with what I regard most closely as the internal logic of the plan of the work, the most theoretical side. For me nothing is separate and the whole

thing dialogues continuously. If I like a daily object (like and idea, a drawing, an image), I keep it and sooner or later I include it in some work. I always try and understand what I can do with it and how I can use it.

not afford (a catamaran, a tank, a large robot, a down to scale house), so we built them at the back of my cousin’s house with cardboard and wooden boxes. We tried to make them as big as possible, so as to be able to fit inside them comfortably. From then on I never stopped.

13, con un po’ di calma, a cardboard submarine 3 mm thick and 8 metres long that I made some years back, and that I more or less made with this spirit. I can’t buy a submarine? I’ll make it a little smaller myself and spend less. I love the practical-creative aspect, that makes you rebuild something unattainable with scanty means, It seems a magical gesture to me. In another way, with 1040 al vapore I rebuilt Paolo Uccello’s chalice from half a millenium ago in 3D, trying with my work to not only reset up relations with current space, but also with history. That drawing is 500 years old and it looks like it was made using CAD, it’s awesome.

Whatʼs the difference between your artistic activity and being a designer?

My relation with use oriented objects and their projects does not centre on their functional ends (even if this interests me a lot), but on possible other relations that are set up in the creation phase. One of the works I presented at Turin was a drawing made with many pinpricks, Originally it was a preparatory drawing for a sculpture that I wanted to make.

I had it projected onto a large sheet that I then pricked along the lines, thus obtaining a mask that I then passed with a spraycan onto another white sheet. Following that I rotated the mask and added other colors still using the spray. The end

result was a dotted design that has now actually become the project for another work still to be finished, the “project of a project”, almost selfannulling.

Hence you follow a planning procedure that is in progressive definition…

Yes, an alternative viewing and creative approach, vague but fun in the experimental stage. When I design something I think up ideas and choose the one that most meets my ends - at times though I shuffle the cards, mixing up the ideas or forgetting the end. In this way I hope to find ways of proceeding that are new and hitherto untried, at least for me.

How important for you is the space where the work is set up?

I see space everywhere, for me it is highly important, hence in a certain sense I don’t see it.

Or that is it is so important that without wishing to do so I often find myself dividing it up into little portions. At times the works come into being in strict relation with the surrounding space, at times the space sets out and defines the very sense of a work, For me they form a unique whole, works and space, at times I create works not knowing the space where they will be shown, at times I change them because they do not suit the space, at times I am well-acquainted with the space but not the work… That is, it’s all a bit of a mess.

identi-kit Donata Paruccini è una designer emergente. La sua tesi in Industrial Design (ISIA di Firenze) è stata seguita da Jonathan De Pas. Poi, per tre anni ha lavorato con Andrea Branzi. E il segno di questi “padri” si ritrova ancora nei suoi progetti, sapienti dal punto di vista concettuale, ma anche colti, per la raffinatezza delle idee, che sono leggere nel senso “calviniano” del termine. Tanto che gran parte dei suoi oggetti sono finiti nelle mostre e nei musei di tutto il mondo: Stati Uniti, Europa, Giappone e, naturalmente, Italia.

Oggi affianca alla sua attività professionale l’insegnamento, all’Istituto Europeo di Design di Milano. Al mondo del packaging ha regalato interessanti progetti di ricerca come il prototipo di scatola termica per bottiglie, presentato alla mostra Sensidivini (Triennale di Milano, 2004, progettato con Francesco Argenti), e l’E-vaso, un sacchetto/contenitore per terriccio che, aperto, diventa vaso/contenitore per piante (esposto alla mostra “New agricolture”, Opos 2004).

Qual è il packaging che ti ha colpito di più negli ultimi anni?

Mi è piaciuta molto la bottiglia d’acqua Ty Nant disegnata da Ross Lovegrove. È un prodotto che avrei voluto progettare io, perché è un progetto sapiente, che utilizza in maniera inconsueta un materiale esteticamente difficile come la plastica.

Nonostante il PET e l’acqua siano di natura così diversa, l’involucro riesce ad amalgamarli perfettamente, in una reciproca esaltazione di effetti.

In questo senso mi sembra che il tuo cioccolatino Label sia una specie di manifesto.

Pensando alla qualità di un cioccolatino, che è data dagli ingredienti usati (percentuale del cacao, aromi, eventuali additivi) e dalla sua freschezza, mi sono detta che, in fondo, è un peccato perdere queste informazioni, generalmente stampate sulle scatole. Quando troviamo cioccolatini sfusi diventa impossibile sapere cosa mangiamo. Ci affidiamo all’intuito, guidato dalle forme evocative dei cioccolatini, oppure al colore più o meno intenso, e qualche volta dopo il primo morso siamo delusi se il gusto non è proprio quello che ci aspettavamo.

Così ho pensato di stampare direttamente sulla superficie del cioccolatino tutte le informazioni. E con questo escamotage ho trasformato l’oggetto nel packaging di se stesso. e-vaso Il packaging del terriccio diventa vaso The soil’s packaging turns into a vase

Al di là delle ovvie differenze, quale potrebbe essere il packaging ideale per gli oggetti che tu disegni?

Penso a confezioni equilibrate, che dovrebbero valorizzare l’oggetto e non penalizzarlo. Non amo i packaging complicati e ingombranti, perché credo che la confezione dovrebbe essere coerente con il prodotto e la sua immagine. Ogni oggetto ha delle caratteristiche da rispettare,

anche dal punto di vista comunicativo. Per questo, oltre al fattore economico e alla tecnologia adeguata, mi interessa la chiarezza informativa, per il consumatore.

Donata Paruccini is an up-and-coming designer. She took her industrial design thesis (ISIA, Florence) with Jonathan De Pas. Then for three years she worked with Andrea Branzi.

And the mark of these “fathers” is still to be found in her projects, conceptually intelligent, but also cultured, this thanks the refinement of the ideas in them, that are light in the sense that Italo Calvino gave to the word. To the point where most of her objects have ended up in shows and museums the world over: the USA, Europe, Japan and, naturally, Italy.

She now accompanies her professional activity with teaching, at the Istituto Europeo di Design, Milan. She has presented interesting research projects to the world of packaging like the prototype for thermal containers for bottles, presented at the show Sensidivini (Milan Triennale, 2004, designed with Francesco Argenti), and E-vaso, a bag/container for soil that, once opened, becomes a pot/container for plants (exposed at the “New agriculture” show, Opos 2004).

What was the packaging that has struck you most over these last years?

I liked the Ty Nant bottle designed by Ross Lovegrove a lot. It’s something I wished I had come up with myself, an intelligent project, that uses an aesthetically difficult material such as plastic in an unusual fashion.

Despite the fact that PET and water have such a very different nature, the cladding manages to amalgamate both of them perfectly, in a reciprocal exalting of effects.

Over and beyond the obvious differences, what could be the ideal packaging for the objects that you design?

Packs should be well-balanced, they should highlight the object and not penalise it. I don’t like complicated, bulky packaging, because I think that the pack should be coherent with the product and its image. Every object has characteristics to be respected, also from the communicational side of things. For this reason, as well as the economic factor and the suited technology, I am interested in the clarity of the information for the consumer.

In this sense it seems to me that your chocolate Label is a type of manifesto.

Thinking of the quality of a chocolate, that comes from the ingredients used (percentage of cocoa, flavoring, possible additives) and from its freshness, I said to myself, basically, it would be a pity to lose all this information, generally printed on the pack. With loose chocolates you never know what you are eating. We turn to our own intuition, guided by the evocative shape of the chocolate, or its more or less intense color, and a bit after the first bite we are disappointed if the taste is not exactly what we expected. Thus I hit on the idea of directly printing all the information on the surface of the chocolate. And with this sleight of hand I transformed the object into the packaging of itself.

Devono emanare luce propria.

Come se fossero stati toccati da una bacchetta magica. Quel torrente di luce e stelline che esce dalla bacchetta magica delle fate…”

“E come si fa?”

“Al reparto confezioni-regalo, questo Natale, ragazze vestite da fatina non faranno pacchi dono.

Cospargeranno i regali di polvere brillante.”

“Sì, ma come la realizzeremmo, in pratica?”

“In… pratica?” aveva balbettato la ragazza.

“Appiccichiamo uno per uno lustrini autoadesivi su dolci e giocattoli?”, avevo ghignato.

“Ci grattugiamo sopra un lingotto d’argento? Lo sfariniamo su uno strato di colla a presa rapida spalmato sugli acquisti dei clienti?” aveva rincarato Bugatti.

La ragazza aveva sbattuto le palpebre sulle sue iridi chiare.

“Oh, non lo so. Il compito di noi creativi è dare indicazioni. Il concept. L’idea. La realizzazione è manovalanza…”

Ci eravamo divertiti a prenderla in giro. Lei non coglieva neanche il sarcasmo più evidente. Dopo che la fatina tettona era uscita, Bugatti aveva messo accanto al suo nome sulla lista cinque stelline e tre punti esclamativi. Nella casella ufficiale delle valutazioni, uno zero

dentro il nostro ufficio nei loro vestiti attillati. Sembrava che si fossero avvolte loro, nella carta da regalo. Tanti bei regalini vivi, nastri di stoffa da slacciare, fettucce di reggiseni, elastici di mutandine, corpi da scartare come doni. Bugatti aveva gli occhi fuori dalla testa.

Guardai l’orologio. Le sette e mezza. “I giudizi da trasmettere alla Style Academy li scriviamo domani, direi.”

“Comunque, numero uno senz’altro la fatina tettona,” disse Bugatti.

“Ti è piaciuta?”

“Mi ha fatto morire dal ridere il suo progetto.”

“Qual era?” non me li ricordavo tutti.

“La polverina magica!” sogghignò Bugatti.

Nel pomeriggio era arrivata questa ragazza pettoruta con gli occhi celesti. Molto seriamente ci aveva spiegato che la cosa che conta è lo splendore del prodotto.

“Farli brillare. L’aureola. La gloria delle merci!”, si era infervorata.

“Sì, ma come,” le avevamo chiesto.

“Al giorno d’oggi, sugli scaffali, l’effetto-aureola si affida alla plastica trasparente che avvolge il prodotto. Un velo di brillantezza.

Il luccicore che riflette l’illuminazione del grande magazzino…”

“E lei con cosa vorrebbe sostituirla?”

“Questa era l’ultima”, commentò Bugatti tirando uno striscio sul nome in fondo alla lista.

“Finalmente,” sbuffai. Era una sera di ottobre. Il vento piegava le cime dei faggi addosso alle finestre. Erano foglie iperautunnali, rosso vivo, colorate dall’insegna luminosa del grande magazzino dove lavoravamo.

L’insegna rossa era montata sul cornicione dell’edificio, proprio sopra il nostro ufficio.

Avevamo esaminato per tutto il pomeriggio i progetti degli allievi della Style Academy; quasi tutte allieve, per la verità. Praticamente gli facevamo gli esami per procura, un paio di pomeriggi all’anno. Dovevamo dare i voti alle loro trovate. Il progetto di questo semestre era: una confezione regalo innovativa per le feste natalizie, adatta alla nostra catena di grandi magazzini. La Style Academy costringeva i suoi studenti ad affrontare un progetto reale, il mondo della produzione vera. Noi li illudevamo che, se avessero escogitato qualcosa di veramente bello, lo avremmo adottato per il prossimo Natale.

“Io non mi sento per niente stanco. Sarei andato avanti anche dopo cena,” disse il mio collega.

“Puoi sempre chiamare le più…

Le più brave. Hai i numeri di telefono, nella lista.”

Si era fatto tardi. Fuori dalla finestra, diedi un’altra occhiata ai faggi ultrarossi e alle strade illuminate. Una fata del reparto confezioni-regalo disseminava lustrini elettrici sulla città.

Mi stavo alzando dalla poltrona girevole quando qualcuno bussò.

Dalla porta socchiusa si affacciò una testa avvolta in un fazzoletto annodato sotto il mento, con una verruca scura sul naso. Era spaventosamente vecchia.

“Posso?”

Io e Bugatti ci guardammo. Non era una bel modo di chiudere la giornata, dopo quella sfilata di belle ragazze.

“Prego. Noi sgomberiamo subito.”

“Oh, fate con comodo.” La donna delle pulizie entrò. Appoggiò alla parete una ramazza ispida, con un fascio rotondo di setole grezze, adatte a spazzare un marciapiede, più che il pavimento di un ufficio. Sotto l’orlo del grembiule le spuntava il collant smagliato, le scarpe basse; una aveva la suola scollata. Mi chiesi quanto le davano all’ora per grattare via i nostri escrementi dai cessi, mentre a noi, in un pomeriggio, la Style Academy ci passava l’equivalente del suo stipendio mensile, per dare i voti agli occhioni delle studentesse.

“Ho visto tutta quella bella gioventù, oggi,” disse la vecchia cominciando a spolverare la nostra scrivania. “Bello il tema

d’esame di questo semestre.”

Io e il mio collega ci guardammo.

Era un’allieva della Style Academy anche lei? Una studentessa fuori corso? Bugatti mi fece l’occhiolino. Forse gli erano venuti in mente quegli spogliarelli spiritosi, da cabaret: entra la Cenerentola stracciona, ma poi sotto il grembiule tutto lercio ti sfodera un fisico freschissimo.

“Sa, quand’ero giovane io, ai bambini, dalle mie parti gli facevano trovare la calza vecchia, appesa sul caminetto.”

“Vero,” disse Bugatti. “La festa dell’Epifania. Sei gennaio.

Epifania, cioè Apparizione, in greco. Voce corrotta popolarmente in Befana. Il giorno dell’apparire. O dell’apparenza.”

“Dentro le calze vecchie si trovavano anche pezzi di carbone, in mezzo a qualche dolcetto, un’arancia… Sa, eravamo poveri. Un’arancia e tre caramelle erano veramente una festa.”

“Mi ricordo, sì,” dissi. “Voglio dire, me l’ha raccontato mia nonna.

Quand’ero piccolo io, invece, hanno messo in commercio i pezzi di zucchero nero che assomigliava al carbone.

Un’imitazione industriale…”

Mi stavo abbottonando l’impermeabile. Non vedevo l’ora di andarmene. Quella donna puzzava.

“Non era una brutta idea, sa?,”

riprese la vecchia. “I bambini imparavano che le cose belle, quelle più desiderate, possono stare dentro un involucro schifoso… Il meglio dell’esistenza, il tesoro, bisogna andarlo a scovare dappertutto.”

La donna delle pulizie aveva attaccato a strofinare i vetri.

“Soprattutto nei contenitori meno promettenti: in fondo a una calza rammendata, infeltrita, che sembrava messa lì ad asciugare, sul caminetto di casa, d’inverno.

E che magari è piena anche di robaccia sporca, delusioni.

Carbone…”

La donna aprì la finestra.

Nell’ufficio entrarono due foglie rosse spinte dal vento freddo.

“In effetti, non era male come trovata,” disse Bugatti, tagliando corto. Aveva già la mano sulla maniglia della porta.

La vecchia donna delle pulizie afferrò la sua ramazza. Con un movimento sorprendente agile, sollevò il grembiule e alzò una gamba, per inforcare il manico fra le cosce. Poi spiccò il volo e uscì fuori dalla finestra. Restammo a guardarla a bocca aperta, mentre planava sopra la città illuminata.

“That’s the last”, Bugatti commented, ticking off the name at the bottom of the list.

“At last,” I sighed. It was an evening in October.

The wind bowed the tops of the beeches close to the windows. Their leaves where hyperautumnal, bright red, colored by the luminous sign of the large department store where we worked. The red sign stood on the cornice of the building, right above our office.

We had spent the whole afternoon examining the projects of the students of the Style Academy; nearly all girl students to be true. Practically speaking we examined them by proxy a couple of afternoons each year. We had to appraise what they had thought up. This term’s project was: an innovatory Christmas gift pack, suited for our chain of stores. The Style Academy forced its students to tackle a real project, the real world of manufacture. We gave them the illusion that, if they came up with anything really appealing, we would adopt it for the coming Christmas.

“I don’t feel at all tired. I could also have gone on after supper,” my colleague told me.

“You can always call up the most… most talented ones. You have their phone numbers on the list,” Eighteen girls (plus three boys) between twenty and twenty-five years of age had passed through our office one after the other in their tight-fitting, snazzy clothes. It appeared they had clad themselves in gift wrapping. Lots of lovely live presents, ribbons to be loosened, bra straps, knicker elastic, bodies to be unwrapped like presents. Bugatti’s eyes were out on stalks.

I looked at my watch. Seven thirty. “We’ll write our appraisal to send to the Style Academy tomorrow I’d say.”

“Anyway, the fairy with the big tits is number one, no doubt about it” Bugatti said “So you liked her?”

“Her project nearly made me die laughing.”

“Which one was it?” I couldn’t remember them all.

“The magic dust!” Bugatti sneered.

A busty girl with clear blue eyes had come in the afternoon. Very seriously she explained to us that the products’ splendour was what really counts.

“Make them shine, A halo. The glory of merchandise”, she explained with fervour.

“Yes but how,” we had asked her.

“These days, on the shelves, the halo-effect is provided by the transparent plastic that envelopes the product. A veil of shininess. The glitter that reflects the lighting of the large store… “ “And what do you want to put in its place?”

“A shiny dust, fairy dust. The products shouldn’t be mortified within a pack. They have to give off their own light. As if they had been touched by a magic wand. That flood of light and twinkling given off by the fairies’ magic wand…”

“And how does it work?” “in the gift wrapping section this Christmas, girls dressed as fairies won’t make gift packs. They will cover the presents in shiny dust.”

“Yes, but how do we practically go about doing this?”

“Practically?” the girl stuttered.

“Should we stick selfadhesive glitter on sweets and toys bit by bit?”, I jibed. “ I suppose we should grate a silver bar over them?

We ought to sprinkle it onto a layer of quick drying glue spread on the customer’s purchases?” Bugatti added maliciously.

The girl blinked heavily. “Oh I don’t know. We creatives have to provide indications, the concept, the idea. Putting things into effect is for those who do the spade work…”

We had a good time making fun of her. She didn’t even catch on when we were being openly

“True,” said Bugatti. “The feast of the Epiphany.

Sixth of January. Epiphany, that is Appearance in Greek. Popularly distorted to “Befana” in Italian.

The day of appearing. Or day of appearance.”

“Inside the old stockings you also found bits of coal, and the odd sweet, an orange… You know, we were poor. An orange and three sweets was really something to get excited about.”

“Yes I remember” I said. “I mean to say, my grandmother told me. When I was little though they sold bits of black sugar that looked like coal. An industrial imitation.. “ I was buttoning up my raincoat. I couldn’t wait to leave the place. The woman stank.

“The idea wasn’t a bad one you know?, the old woman went on. “The kids learnt that nice thinks, the things you want most, can come clad in lousy wrapping… you need to seek out the best things of human existence, its treasures everywhere.” The cleaner lady had began to wipe the glass panes.

“Aboveall in the less promising containers: at the bottom of a patched up stocking, matted with age, that seems to have been left there to dry close to the fireplace, in winter. And perhaps it is full of filthy rubbish, disappointments. Coal… “ The woman opened the window. Two red leaves entered into the office blown in by the cold wind.

“Yes actually it wasn’t a bad idea,” Bugatti said, cutting short. He already had his hand on the door.

The old cleaner lady grabbed her broom. With a movement that was surprisingly agile she lifted her frock and raising a leg, mounted the handle. She then took off and exited via the window. We stared at her agape, while she glided above the lit-up city.

sarcastic. After the busty fairy left the office, Bugatti put five stars and three exclamation marks beside her name. In the box for the marks he put minus minus zero.

It had got late. Outside the window I threw another glance at the ultrared beeches and the lit-up street.

A fairy from the gift wrapping department was spreading electric glitter across the city.

I was getting up from my swivel chair when somebody knocked on the door.

A women’s head wrapped in a scarf knotted below the chin emerged from the half-opened door, a dark verruca on her nose. She was horrifyingly old.

“May I?” Me and Bugatti looked at each other. It was no great way to end the day after that parade of beauties.

“Go ahead. We are clearing off now.”

“Oh take your time.” The cleaner lady entered. She lent a broom made of a round sheaf of rough bristles against the wall, more suited for sweeping the pavement than the floor of an office. Under the hem of her dress she had laddered tights, she wore flat shoes: the sole was coming off one of them. I wondered how much she got for scraping our excrement off the toilets, while Style Academy gave us the equivalent of her months wages for an afternoon appraising the glint in their girl students eyes.

“I saw all those nice young ‘uns, today,” the old woman said as she began dusting off our desk.

“The exam question for this term was a nice one.”

Me and my colleague looked at each other. Was she too a student of the Style Academy? A bit of a latecomer? Bugatti winked at me. Perhaps he was thinking of those cabaret joke strippers: in comes Cinderella in rags, though from underneath her filthy frock she reveals a stunning figure.

“You know, when I was young, the kids round where I live got an old stocking hung over the fireplace.”

Sono gli oggetti selezionati per la mostra - tenutasi a Roma lo scorso maggio - Beyond Boxes: paper and cardboard design, curata da Lucia Pietrosi e Sveva Barbera e organizzata dalla Facoltà di Architettura “Ludovico Quaroni” dell’Università La Sapienza in collaborazione con

Comieco (Consorzio Nazionale Recupero e Riciclo Imballaggi a Base Cellulosica).

Tutti i prodotti in mostra, circa 80 pezzi di design, sono stati ideati da progettisti di diverse nazionalità, nomi più e meno noti, che si sono impegnati a dar forza ed espressività a un materiale desueto per suppellettili e pezzi di arredamento.

Gli oggetti così concepiti non sono eterni ma sono resistenti, non lussuosi nell’aspetto ma neppure troppo poveri, sono poco impegnativi, confortevoli, gradevoli e soprattutto poco costosi.

mentale, sono queste le condizioni di vita che hanno portato i designer a riflettere su una dimensione progettuale a metà strada tra l’ “usa e getta” e il “per sempre”, tra il “provvisorio” e il “definitivo”, tra la materia “effimera” e quella “eterna”.

Questi i presupposti con cui hanno realizzato oggetti dalle accentuate caratteristiche estetiche e funzionali, ma anche ecocompatibili: leggeri, flessibili, trasformabili, trasportabili, adattabili, riciclabili, biodegradabili.

Questi i contesti in cui, personaggi come Frank O. Gehry o i fratelli Campana - ma anche studenti e giovani designer - si sono messi in gioco per arrivare a progettare la carta oltre ogni immaginazione.

Beyond Boxes Design tackles the subject of packaging A rocking horse, if not in wood but in simple double corrugate cardboard, does not lose its poetry; and Molly the sheep, she too in cardboard, can be fitted together, and instead of bleating, can be used for containing books and CDs. As well as that chairs, benches, sofas, bookshelves, magazine racks, lamps, tables, cases and even delicate pierced clothes. All rigorously in paper and cardboard. These are the objects selected for the show - held in Rome last May - Beyond Boxes: paper and cardboard design, curated by Lucia Pietrosi and Sveva Barbera and organised by the Faculty of Architecture “Ludovico Quaroni” of the Università Sapienza, in cooperation with Comieco (National Italian Consortium for the Recovery and Recycling of Cellulose Based Packaging).

expressivity to a material unusual for decorative and furnishing complements. The objects conceived as such are not eternal but they are sturdy, they are not luxurious in appearance but neither are they shoddy or poor, they don’t require much commitment, they fit in nicely, are pleasant and aboveall they don’t cost much.

Nomadism, temporariness, a desire for personalisation, easy transformation of the everyday, physical and mental mobility, these are the conditions of life that have led designers to reflect on a design dimension halfway between the “disposable” and the “forever”, between the “provisory” and the “definitive”, between “ephemeral” and “eternal” material. These the presuppositions under which these objects with an accentuated aesthetic and functional characteristic have been made, but they are also ecocompatible: light, flexible, convertible, transportable, adaptable, recyclable, biodegradable. These the contexts in which characters like Frank O. Gehry or the Campana brothers - but also students and young designers have taken up the challenge to achieve designing paper beyond all imagination.

Quali potrebbero essere le evoluzioni più estreme dell’imballaggio? Al Packaging Innovation Show - la “mostra evento” che si è tenuta a Birmingham nell’ambito della fiera Total - designer, produttori e utilizzatori hanno esplorato le trasformazioni che potrebbe subire il packaging nell’ipotetico anno 2020, e hanno immaginato stili di vita e imballi “intelligenti” in settori come quello cosmetico, farmaceutico, nel food e nel beverage.

Tra le ipotesi futuristiche e futuribili scopriamo che: la birra si potrà bere sempre fredda grazie a un bicchiere funzionante come una camera autorefrigerante e a speciali inchiostri termocromatici, che segnalano quando si è raggiunta la temperatura ideale; i cosmetici diventeranno

“cosmeceutici”, con proprietà farmacologiche, grazie a sensori che monitoreranno l’epidermide e personalizzeranno la formulazione del prodotto; il profumo non sarà più spruzzato ma verrà applicato direttamente al corpo mediante una piastrina in grado di valutare sia lo stato della pelle che l’ambiente esterno e, quindi, in grado di miscelare diverse fragranze nel modo più appropriato per la persona che la indossa, oppure, ancora, che si diffonderà (tramite scarica elettrostatica) da una sorta di ventaglio vaporizzatore; bar e caffè potranno usare speciali tazzine, realizzate in polimeri a base di amidi e contenenti le principali vitamine, che verranno assunte direttamente con la bevanda; sull’aereo i pasti saranno personalizzabili grazie a un

contenitore-vassoio che consentirà diversi tipi di cottura a partire dagli ingredienti freschi situati in appositi scomparti.

Ma questi sono solo alcune delle ipotesi più avveniristiche.

L’aspetto più interessante è che i progetti presentati, una ventina di concept molto diversi tra loro, sono stati sviluppati, oltre che pensando al 2020 prossimo venturo, anche analizzando alcuni bisogni contemporanei non ancora totalmente risolti come il consumare cibo per strada o in macchina, la socializzazione nei locali pubblici, il controllo dell’alimentazione di bambini e adolescenti, l’allungamento della vita, della salute e del benessere psicofisico.

Insomma, uno sguardo al futuro non dimenticando però i problemi di adesso.

What could the most extreme evolution of packaging be? At the Packaging Innovation Show – the “show event” that was held at Birmingham as part of the Total fair – designers, producers and users explored the transformations that packaging might go through in the hypothetical year 2020, and imagined lifestyles and “smart” packaging in sectors like cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food & beverage. Among the feasible futuristic ideas we

discover: beer can always be drunk cold thanks to a glass that acts as a autorefrigeration chamber and special thermochromatic inks that indicate when the ideal temperature has been reached; cosmetics will be “cosmeutics”, with pharmacological properties, thanks to sensors that monitor the skin and that personalise the product formulas; perfume is no longer sprayed but it is applied directly to the body by way of a platelet capable of rating both the state of the skin as well as the external ambient and hence, capable of mixing different fragrances in the most

appropriate way for the person concerned, or, again, that is diffused (by way of electrostatic charge) from a sort of vaporiser fan; bars and cafés will be able to use special cups, made in starch based polymers and containing the principle vitamins, that are consumed along with the beverage; on the airplane dishes can be personalised thanks to a container-tray that will enable different degrees of cooking of fresh ingredients stored in special compartments. But these are only some of the most futuristic ideas. The most interesting aspect is that the projects presented, some twenty concepts very different from each other, have been developed, as well as thinking of the coming 2020, by also analysing some contemporary needs that still have not been totally solved, like consuming food in the street or in the car, socialising in bars, restaurants and pubs, controlling the food intake of children and adolescents, the prolongation of life, health and psychophysical wellbeing. That is looking at the future without neglecting the problems of today.

Riviste Emergenti Art Lab e Uovo: estro grafico e contenuti originali in due nuovi magazine italiani Fabiola Naldi

Dall’avvento delle più recenti e più sofisticate tecnologie digitali, non si è fatto altro che sentire parlare della crisi dell’editoria cartacea, al limite estremo della sua progressiva scomparsa.

Per ora la catastrofe annunciata non si è realizzata. Al contrario, si sta avverando un’equazione anomala fra l’aumento continuo del costo della carta e una proliferazione di nuove riviste dedicate all’analisi e alla ricerca di diversi micro-settori estetici.

Fra le tante testate pronte a registrare il flusso impetuoso della “teoria e pratica della visione” Art Lab e Uovo rappresentano due degli esempi italiani più interessanti. Entrambe - a partire dalla costruzione grafica della pagina che è diventata, con il tempo e l’esperienza, un vero e proprio format editoriale - sono i testimoni della rinnovata necessità di mostrare le discrepanze visive all’interno dei contesti culturali analizzati.

Art Lab, realizzata a Milano grazie al supporto dell’azienda cartografica Fedrigoni e diretta da Roberto Castellotti e Carlo Branzaglia, è divenuta un regolare appuntamento sulla comunicazione di massa e il mondo delle merci. L’universo del design diventa l’alibi perfetto per analisi formali e contenutistiche di più ampia portata estetica. L’argomento trattato per ogni numero si modifica di volta in volta ma il contenitore-rivista mantiene una struttura riconoscibile pur prestandosi morbidamente a leggeri cambi grafici. Art Lab è uno strumento visivo per comunicare la comunicazione, una gigantesca matrioska che, aperta, svela il mondo senza confini della rete informativa.

Uovo è un’altra cosa. È un’altra rivista, è un altro viaggio nell’iperspazio dell’immagine. Creata, gestita e prodotta a Torino da Chiara Figone e Franck Veyrières, intende essere uno spostamento direzionale nella visione e nella comprensione dell’immagine, sia che si tratti di moda, di costume, di arte, di musica e di tutto quello che più interessa ai due creative editing directors. La griglia grafica è gestita come espressione di un concept in progressiva trasformazione e si modifica a ogni numero tramite un’unica costante: il tema, considerato un pretesto visivo per unire realtà differenti. Ogni numero ha un colore predominante (bianco, nero, giallo, rosso…) attraverso il quale la storia di un fotografo, di un’artista, di uno scrittore, di un musicista si accavalla fra le pieghe di una pubblicazione dal vago sapore del libro d’artista. Testo e immagine non seguono le norme editoriali care alle solite riviste occidentali. A volte predomina l’una a volte l’altra. Perfino il numero di pagine si modifica in funzione di una necessità creativa in continua trasformazione. Art Lab e Uovo 2/04

sono senza dubbio distanti e diverse fra loro, ciò nonostante la percezione finale è che tutte e due evidenzino l’esigenza di procedere al ritmo di una contemporaneità fin troppo veloce ma che, allo stesso tempo, in quanto riviste cartacee da sfogliare e assaporare con gli occhi, ci costringano a

Up-and-coming Magazines Art Lab and Uovo, graphic verve and original contents in two new Italian magazines Fabiola Naldi

Ever since the advent of the more recent and more sophisticated digital technology, one has heard nothing but talk as to the crisis of paper based publishing, at the extreme limit of its progressive disappearance.

For now the announced catastrophe has not come about. On the contrary, there is an anomalous equation between the continuous increase in the cost of paper and the proliferation of new magazines dedicated to the analysis and to the research in various aesthetic micro-sectors.

Among the many publications ready to register the impetuous flow of the “theory and the practise of vision” Art Lab and Uovo stand as two of the most interesting Italian examples. Both - starting off from the graphic construction of the page that has become, with time and experience, a true and proper editorial format – bear witness to the renewed necessity to show visual discrepancy within the context of the culture analysed.

Art Lab, produced in Milan thanks to the support of the paper and graphics concern Fedrigoni and directed by Roberto Castellotti and Carlo Branzaglia, has become a regular feature on mass communication and the world of goods.

The subject tackled in each issue changes every

time but the container-magazine keeps up a recognisable structure while all the same operating gentle, slight changes in the graphics. Art Lab is a visual tool for communicating communication, a huge matrioska that, once opened, reveals the limitless world of the information network.

Uovo is something different. It is another type of magazine offering another trip in the hyperspace of the image. Created, run and produced in Turin by Chiara Figone and Franck Veyrières, it intends constituting a change in direction in the viewing and understanding of the image, whether it is dealing with fashion, custom, art, music and all that interests the two creative editing directors. The graphics are run as an expression of a concept in progressive transformation and change in each issue by way of a single constant: the subject, considered a visual pretext for uniting different realities. Each issue has a predominant color (white, black, yellow, red…) through which the story of a photograph, of an artist, of a writer, of a musician lies between the folds of a publication having a vague flavor of the artist’s book. Text and image do not follow the publishing norms dear to standard western magazines. At times one or the other predominates. Even the number of pages change in function of a creative need that changes continuously. Art Lab and Uovo are without a doubt distant and different from each other, despite this the end perception is that both show the need to proceed in time with a contemporaneity that is running all too fast but that, at the same time, in that they are paper based magazines, is to be flicked through and savoured with the eyes, making us slow down and reflect on the frenetic flow of communication and information.

Che cosa accadrebbe se gli oggetti di uso comune, ma anche le confezioni che li contengono, diventassero improvvisamente animati, intelligenti e in grado di interagire con noi? È quello che, fra le altre cose, succede a John Anderton, lo psicopoliziotto interpretato da Tom Cruise, protagonista di Minority Report, il film superfantascientifico diretto da Steven Spielberg.

La previsione del regista, proiettata nel futuro filmico del 2054, risale già a due anni fa, tuttavia ci è molto più vicina di quanto si possa immaginare: la

possibilità che l’involucro di un qualsiasi prodotto improvvisamente prenda vita grazie a microchip interattivi è, per Anderton, un fatto banale e quotidiano, ma anche per noi si avvia a diventare una realtà assai prossima.

Il packaging futuristico degli oggetti di Minority Report acquista una valenza funzionale prioritaria e determinante nella vita dei personaggi del film.

I molti computer assemblati in un design iper-sofisticato e interconnessi con il proprietario grazie a un codice oculare identificativo, le video camere che proiettano ologrammi

realistici, i giornali e i cartelloni pubblicitari interattivi fino alla più semplice scatola di cornflakes parlante, non sono più imballaggi seducenti pensati, semplicemente, come “consigli per gli acquisti”, ma diventano co-protagonisti di un tempo sempre meno futuristico.

Come infatti risulta da un recente incontro promosso da Checkpoint Systems (multinazionale specializzata nella produzione e commercializzazione di sistemi per la sicurezza e l’identificazione delle merci) e riportato da ItaliaImballaggio nel maggio 2004, è già da molto

soprattutto, sarà in grado di dialogare con la catena di distribuzione (per segnalare ad esempio l’esaurimento delle scorte), con il produttore, e forse anche con l’utente – acquistando, così, un plusvalore non solo estetico, ma veramente interattivo.

L’imballaggio si sta già modificando e rivendica un’importanza pari al prodotto.

Questo scenario lascia prevedere nuove presenze quotidiane che forse finiranno per sostituire i nostri animali domestici. Non dovremo aspettare il 2054 per tutto questo. Sta già accadendo.

Ciò potrebbe significare che in un lasso di tempo ragionevolmente breve la confezione dei più semplici articoli domestici sarà parte di un insieme “intelligente” che interagirà con noi nella scelta e nella fruizione della merce.

L’involucro esterno della nuova merce non sarà semplicemente finalizzato alla comunicazione della qualità (informazioni al consumatore) o all’identificazione del prodotto (codice a barre) ma,

che la tecnologia RFID (radio frequency identification) viene impiegata per realizzare le cosiddette “etichette intelligenti” o smart labels.

In sostanza, nelle etichette viene inserito un microchip che non solo può contenere una mole di dati enormemente superiore alle tradizionali etichette cartacee, ma che può anche “comunicare” via radiofrequenza con la rete di distribuzione - e forse, un domani, con il consumatore. Per ora si tratta di una tecnologia il cui utilizzo è limitato dagli alti costi, ma, come dimostra la bruciante evoluzione delle

What would happen if the objects of everyday use, but also the packs that contain the same, suddenly became animated, intelligent and capable of interacting with us?

This is what, among other things, happens to John Anderton, the psychopoliceman interpreted by Tom Cruise, protagonist of Minority Report, the super science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg.

The film director’s prevision, projected into the film future of 2054, goes back to two years ago, all the same it is a lot closer than we can imagine: the possibility that the pack of any product suddenly comes to life thanks to an interactive microchip is, for Anderton a banal and daily factor, but for us too it has started to become a reality in the offing.

The futuristic packaging of the objects in Minority Report takes on a priority and decisive functional value in the life of the characters of the film.

The many computers assembled in a hypersophisticated and interconnected design with the owner thanks to an ocular identification code, the video cameras that project realistic holograms, the interactive newspapers and advertising hoardings, up to the simplest talking packet of cornflakes, are no long seductive items of packaging thought up to “advise you on your purchases”, but they become co-protagonists in a time that is becoming ever less futuristic.

As in fact was seen in a recent encounter promoted by Checkpoint Systems (multinational specialised in the production and marketing of goods security and identification systems) and in the May 2004 edition of ItaliaImballaggio, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) has already for a long time been used to manufacture the socalled smart labels. Basically, a microchip is inserted in the label that not only contains a host of information a lot greater than the traditional paper labels, but can also “dialogue” via radiofrequency with the distribution network - and perhaps tomorrow also with the consumer.

For now it is a technology of limited use due to its high costs, but, as demonstrated by the heady evolution of information technology in the last decade, the problem of costs ends up by being circumscribed sooner or later.

This might mean that in a reasonably short period of time the pack of the simplest household item will be part of an “intelligent” system that will interact with us in the choice and the use of merchandise.

The outer wrapping of the new goods will not only simply serve to communicate quality (information to the consumer) or the identification of the product (barcode) but aboveall it will be capable of dialoguing with the distribution chain (for example to indicate that supplies have run out), with the producer, and perhaps also with the user - thus taking on a surplus value that is not only aesthetic, but truly interactive.

Packaging is already changing and claiming an importance equal to the product. This scenario enables one to foresee new daily presences that will perhaps end up by replacing our pets.

We won’t have to wait for 2054 for all this.

Its already happening now.

Da qualche tempo la pubblicità televisiva tende a focalizzarsi meno sul prodotto e molto di più su ciò che lo circonda e lo definisce, e in particolare sulle molteplici forme dell’involucro.

Il fenomeno è evidente soprattutto nella dinamica di alcuni spot pubblicitari, ma è ben presto dilagato anche in altre aree comunicative.

Alcuni prodotti vengono reclamizzati apertamente a partire dal loro packaging, come nel caso di Danissimo di Danone, lo yogurt che dà “un piacere rotondo”. Per mostrare visivamente l’invisibile senso di “gusto completo e piacevole” è stato creato un packaging apposito dalla silhouette tondeggiante, che a sua volta diventa protagonista di una serie di riprese “circolari” che avvolgono letteralmente il prodotto. A un livello meno altisonante si colloca invece la pubblicità di alcuni vini confezionati nel tetrabrik: qui la sfida consiste, all’opposto, nel far “digerire” al consumatore il fatto che un prodotto normalmente venduto in altre confezioni (bottiglia, fiasco), possa anche essere

comodamente e praticamente consumato in un imballaggio di solito riservato a bevande meno nobili come il latte o i succhi di frutta. Nella pubblicità del vino Tavernello, il packaging diventa addirittura protagonista: i commensali che lo assaggiano, sotto le mentite spoglie di un’allegra brigata di giovani, sono infatti astronauti che, qualche tempo dopo la lauta cena innaffiata da vin rosso, continuano a degustarlo, ma stavolta in una navicella spaziale e in assenza di gravità - condizione quest’ultima che rende particolarmente comodo un contenitore “povero” ma infrangibile come il brik di cartone. Insomma, la pubblicità lascia intendere che bere il vino dal tetrabrik non solo non è un sacrilegio, ma è anzi un modo per stare veramente al passo con i tempi e addirittura precorrerli...

Anche i Pringles della Procter & Gamble sono degli snack che devono gran parte della loro fortuna alla confezione cilindrica richiudibile; il prodotto stesso (delle simil-patatine rotonde e regolari invece delle autentiche ma irregolari

patatine fritte) è stato concepito per adattarsi perfettamente al proprio contenitore. Di conseguenza, lo spot pubblicitario dei Pringles insiste sul carattere relazionale del packaging: il tubo di patatine è perfetto per essere aperto e chiuso di fronte alla tv, nella tipica postura da couchpotatoes, cioè da telespettatore decotto - appunto - come una patata lessa. Lo stesso meccanismo è all’opera nel packaging dei Baci (ex)Perugina (ora Nestlé), sulla cui confezione a tubo si è venuto costruendo il doppio senso dello slogan “tubiamo?” che significa sia “apriamo la confezione a tubo dei cioccolatini”, sia “tubiamo”, cioè “amoreggiamo come colombelle”. La vecchia scatola dei Baci, che immortalava l’eterna coppia di innamorati sotto un cielo stellato, ha perso col tempo efficacia; di qui il ricorso al tubo di cioccolatini in funzione di rinforzo retorico, per ribadire in modo nuovo il tema romantico del “dolce regalo”.

A metà strada fra discorso letterale e rimando metaforico sta lo spot Peugeot 407: in un

ipotetico mondo lievemente retrò e dall’aspetto falsificato, alla Truman Show, si muovono automobili-giocattolo che guidatori-bambini ricoverano, naturalmente, in una “scatola per giocattoli”. Come a dire: le cose vere, per uomini veri, come le vere automobili, non hanno bisogno di packaging; peccato che anche le automobili “vere” abbiano bisogno però, come sanno tutti, di essere parcheggiate nel loro bravo imballaggio, cioè in un box...

L’insistenza del discorso pubblicitario sul packaging è dilagata inaspettatamente anche in alcuni programmi tv.

Completamente basato sulla metafora della “scatola” è il longevo Affari tuoi, condotto da Paolo Bonolis su Rai2. Come è noto (il programma ha toccato i vertici serali di share), un concorrente deve eliminare progressivamente delle scatole che possono contenere tanto oggetti inutili che centinaia di migliaia di euro. Dato che il contenuto è praticamente virtuale (i soldi sono sostituiti da una semplice cifra che li indica)

il contenitore è tutto. La scatola qui è ridotta al puro involucro anonimo, che ha il compito di celare la sorpresa.

Con la loro aria povera e molto comune, le scatole di Affari tuoi ribadiscono il tradizionale modo di vedere l’imballaggio: un diaframma che ci separa dalla felicità.

Più raffinato, perché ispirato direttamente dal packaging, è invece un altro programma, che ha avuto però vita assai più breve, cioè il discusso Bisturi.

Condotto da Platinette e Irene Pivetti, Bisturi (andato in onda nella primavera 2004 su Rete4) era un reality show basato su casi di gente comune che si sottoponeva a un intervento di chirurgia estetica gratuito, in cambio dell’apparizione televisiva e della ripresa in diretta dell’operazione.

Per la sigla iniziale e i vari siparietti gli autori, forse nel tentativo di ingentilire le grevi sequenze di squartamento chirurgico, hanno scelto la metafora del flacone di profumo e della scatola di “crema di bellezza” la cui confezione si “apre” sulle immagini degli ospiti in studio; lo stesso

lettering del titolo richiama il logo di creme “storiche” (come la intramontabile Nivea).

Il significato è trasparente: nonostante proprio la pubblicità televisiva sia il più potente promotore dei prodotti di bellezza basati su mirabolanti principi attivi, dai nanosomi al boswell, dall’olio di mandorla alla ceramide, dalle proteine della seta alle “molecole riparatrici”, il vero cosmetico universale resta proprio lei, la televisione.

E’ alla tv che ormai si possono con efficacia applicare le parole che un giorno Shakespeare rivolse all’oro e che Marx aveva ripreso nei suoi manoscritti giovanili, parlando del denaro: non è più quest’ultimo che “trasforma il brutto in bello, il deforme in attraente, e che permette allo storpio di correre con la potenza di cento cavalli”, ma il magico tocco della scatola catodica.

The “Box” Marco Senaldi

For some time now TV advertising has been tending to focus less directly on the product and a lot more on what surrounds and defines it, and in particular on the multiple forms of its packaging. The phenomenon is aboveall evident in the sequences of some TV ads, but soon spilled over into other areas of communication.

Some products are openly advertised starting off from their packaging, as in the case of Danone’s Danissimo, the yoghurt that gives a “round pleasure”. To visually render the invisible sense of pleasure a special round shaped packaging was created, that in turn is the main feature in a slow circular sequence that literally wraps the product.

At a less high-flown level one finds the ads for some wines packed in tetrabrik: here the challenge consists of, in the reverse situation, having the consumer “digest” the fact that a product normally sold in other types of packaging (the bottle, flask), can be conveniently and practically consumed in a packaging usually reserved for beverages less “noble” such as milk or fruit juices.

In the ads of Tavernello wine, packaging is the hero: people who taste it, in borrowed plumes of a merry group, are in facts astronauts who, some times after the dinner, will drink the same wine in

a space-ship and in gravity lack - where an unbreakeable packaging as the brik is particularly comfortable. Ads suggests that drinking wine in a tetrabrik is not a sacrilege, but it is instead a way to keep up with the times, or even to be ahead of them. The Pringles ads offer much the same approach, crisps that owe much of their fortune to their cylindrical reclosable pack; the content itself (crisps round and regular, instead of real but irregular fried potatoes) is conceived to fit perfectly to its container. Consequently, ads stresses the relationship feature of packaging: the crisps tube is perfect for consuming in front of the TV, in typical couch potato pose.

Quite the same goes for the world famous Baci Perugina - now Nestlé’s - chocolates (“Baci” meaning “kiss” in Italian). The pun in their slogan “tubiamo?” - which means, in turn, “shall we open the tubular pack of chocolates?” and/or “shall we coo (in italian “tubiamo”)?”, that is “shall we make love as two doves?” - has been constructed around their tubular shaped pack. The old box of Baci Perugina, with a couple of two lovers under a starred sky, became more and more weak; hence the idea of the “tube” which rethorically reinforce the romantic idea of a “sweet present”.

Between literally discourse and metaphorical speaking, there is Peugeot 407 TV ads: one sees a bit old fashion and fake, Truman Show-like hypothetical world, in which baby-drivers drive

toy-cars and put them into a toy-box. In other words: real things, for real men, such as real cars, do not need any packaging - it’s a pity, however, that, how everyone knows, each “real” car needs to be parked into a “real” box, i.e. a garage.

Completely based on “the box” metaphor is the longlasting Affari tuoi, hosted by Paolo Bonolis on Rai2. In the program (which reached the prime time highest shares), a player must choose and, one by one, eliminate some boxes that may contain both useless objects and thousands Euros. Since the content is purely virtual (money is substituted by a simple number), packaging is all. Here the box is a mere, anonymous container, whose task is to conceal a surprise.

Very poor and common, the boxes of Affari tuoi stress the traditional way of seeing packaging: a veil between us and happiness.

One could go on for long, but the most striking example is not from a TV ad but from the titles of a program Bisturi (Scalpels). Hosted by the flabby, over-forty Italian drag queen Platinette and former northern league politician Irene Pivetti, Bisturi (broadcast in the 2004 season on the independent Rete4 channel) is a new (de)generation reality show, based on cases of normal people who are prepared to undergo free plastic surgery in exchange for appearing in TV

and the live filming of their operation.

For the opening sequence and the various entr’actes the authors, perhaps in an attempt to mitigate the hard sequences of the “guests” being surgically sliced open, chose the metaphor of the perfume bottle and the tin of “beauty cream” that literally opens onto the guests in the studio; the selfsame lettering in the titles harks back to historic cream logos (like the everlasting Nivea).

The meaning is clear: despite the fact that TV advertising is the most powerful promoter of beauty products based on extraordinary active principles, from nanosomes to boswell, from almond oil to ceramide, from silk proteins to “restorative molecules”, in the end it is television that is the true universal cosmetic.

Indeed the words that Shakespeare once used referring to gold and the Marx echoed in his early manuscripts speaking of money, can now be applied to television.

It is no longer gold or wealth that “transforms the ugly into beautiful, that makes the deformed attractive, and that allows the lame to run at the speed of a thousand horses” but the magic touch of the “box”.

“Dolceamaro” Oggetti per il Corpo e lo Spirito Francalma Nieddu

Durante il Designmai 2004 - la settimana dedicata al design tenutasi a Berlino questa primavera - ho incontrato una giovane designer berlinese con i suoi particolarissimi gioielli.

Si chiama Julia Kunkel, classe ‘76, è una progettista attratta dal rapporto dell’uomo con le sue quotidiane frustrazioni, scaricate e compensate nel mangiare qualcosa di dolce. La ricerca formale di Julia parte da questa tematica; la sua tesi di master in design presso l’Università di Berlino è costituita da una serie di oggetti commestibili, come il

cappuccio di una matita pensato in liquirizia o in gelatina, e, quindi, da mordicchiare liberamente, fino ad arrivare alla più articolata collezione di gioielli commestibili, memoria ludica di quegli zuccherini per bambini a forma di piccoli anelli montati su elastico. Sweet tears è una collana tutta da assaporare, in gelatina colorata, è un preciso un invito a “farsi mangiare”, serve a creare un contatto intimo tra chi la indossa che chi l’osserva. A contatto con il corpo cambia forma, temperatura e consistenza. Si può mangiare

pendente dopo pendente, lasciando per ultimo il girocollo. È un gioiello temporaneo per un breve, speciale momento.

Il packaging è allo stesso tempo una protezione e un display per ammirare il gioiello.

Le informazioni sono chiare, oltre agli ingredienti è riportata la raccomandazione di mettere il collier nel frigo prima di indossarlo - per una piacevole sensazione di fresco in estate.

A tender bite, sono “tentazioni di cioccolato”, spille che riproducono superfici del corpo e che diventano un decoro, un

segno plastico e scultoreo.

Realizzate dopo uno stage a Barcellona, si ispirano alle opere dei grandi cioccolatai spagnoli, che riproducono le piastrelle di Gaudì e altre famose sculture.

In questo caso l’imballaggio si avvicina molto a quello della cioccolateria d’autore che mostra il contenuto da una finestra trasparente. Rosebud, è una rosa di marzapane, con petali di colore degradante, tutta da sfogliare fino ad arrivare ad un cuore contenente una piccola ricompensa: come fossero orecchini, un paio di perle di zucchero argentato. Dolce

sorpresa per compensare della paziente apertura dello scrigno.

Dei suoi progetti la stessa Kunkel racconta: “Negli ultimi anni ho lavorato a vari progetti, ho disegnato ‘cose dolci’ perché sono sempre alla ricerca di nuove prospettive sui modi di rapportarsi con il cibo. L’aspetto affascinante di questo rapporto attraverso il design, è dato dalla diretta esperienza della loro sensorialità. Forma, texture, aromi e sapori sono intensamente percepiti da chi mangia un dolce. Il personale processo di avvicinamento al dolce e la sua assunzione,

deriva da forme culturali, sociali e individuali. Ho creato specifiche associazioni e stati emozionali con l’intenzione di predisporre un cortocircuito, modificare in ognuno dei fruitori sia gli aspetti intellettuali che quelli irrazionali.

Questi gioielli sono un modo attraverso cui provoco un differente approccio ad ogni situazione quotidiana e ad ogni stato d’animo. Dimostrano, non senza un’ironica strizzatina d’occhio, come si possa superare un disagio attraverso un piccolo e personale atto di distruzione”.

“Dolceamaro” Objects for the Body and the Spirit Francalma Nieddu

During Designmai 2004 - the week dedicated to design held in Berlin this spring - I met a young Berlin designer with her very special jewels. Her name is Julia Kunkel, 28 years of age, a designer attracted by man’s relations with his daily frustrations, which he/she unloads and compensates for by eating sweets. Julia’s study starts off from here; her Berlin University design master thesis is made up of a series of edible objects, ie a pencil-top in liquorice or gelatine, hence freely chewable, going on to her more articulated collection of edible jewels, a lighthearted throwback to those ring-shaped children’s sweets on an elastic.

Sweet tears is a series to taste in colored gelatine, that specifically asks to be eaten; the intent is to create a contact between the wearer and the observer. In contact with the body they change shape, temperature and consistency. You can eat pendant after pendant, leaving the necklace to last.

It is a temporary jewel for a fleeting, special moment. The packaging is both protection and a display, to allow you to admire the jewel. The information on the same is clear: as well as bearing the ingredients, the purchaser is invited to put the collier in the fridge before wearing it. This to give it a pleasant sensation of freshness in the

summer.

A Tender bite are “chocolate temptations”, broaches that reproduce body surfaces and that become a decoration, a plastic, sculptural sign.

Made after having attended a stage in Barcelona, they are inspired by the work of the great Spanish chocolatiers’ reproductions of plaques by Gaudi and other famous sculptors. In this case the packaging comes very close to that of auteur chocolaterie showing its contents in a transparent window.

Rosebud is a marzipan rose, with petals in declining colors, to be leafed through until you get to a heart containing a small present: a couple of pearls in silvered sugar, like a set of earrings. A sweet surprise to reward you for your patience in opening the casket.

Kunkel tells us: “Over these last few years I have worked on various projects, I designed ‘sweet things’ because I am always on the look-out for new prospects and ways of relating to food.

The fascinating part of this relationship through design though is given by the direct experience of their sensoriality. Shape, texture, aroma and flavour are intensely perceived by the sweet eater. I have created specific associations and emotional states wishing to create a short circuit, modifying both the intellectual and the irrational aspects in those enjoying them. These jewels are a way of facing up to everyday situations and moods differently. They show, not without a touch of irony, how you might be able get over a feeling of uneasiness by a small, personal act of destruction”.

Eat Me. Delicious, Desirable, Successful Food Packaging Design, Ben Hargreaves, RotoVision, 2004 Si potrebbe pensare che il packaging dei prodotti commestibili debba rispondere in primo luogo a esigenze di base, come l’igiene degli ingredienti e la comunicazione del marchio - e che quindi sia più o meno prevedibile. Niente di meno vero.

Eat Me dimostra al contrario che l’ambito del food packaging è un campo per dare vita a infinite

sperimentazioni grafiche e formali. Eat Me suddivide l’approccio al packaging in tre rami principali: la superficie del prodotto, ossia il linguaggio, la grafica, il copywriting, le tendenze per accaparrarsi l’attenzione del consumatore distratto; il rapporto brandpackaging e la vita del prodotto oltre il packaging, nei punti vendita e sullo scaffale; e infine tre case studies di eccellenza.

Spiccano su tutti alcuni progetti di packaging come la bottiglia di birra Tuborg che nasconde nel fondo uno stappabottiglie; la straordinaria pulizia delle etichette della private label Selfridges, che danno alle

confezioni di miele e salsine l’aplomb di saggi filosofici; il complesso lavoro progettuale per i macinapepe di Oxo Grind.

Con tutto ciò, il volume stesso, pubblicato da un editore che si occupa da tempo di questi argomenti come RotoVision, è esso stesso un oggetto di culto: grafica pulitissima e insieme affascinante, foto di qualità eccellente, impaginazione accuratissima, arriva a punte di eleganza ignote persino a molti cataloghi di design o di arte contemporanea.

You might think that product packaging should in the first place satisfy basic needs, like

and on the shelves; and lastly three case studies d’excellence.

Some packaging design projects stand out over other ones, like the Tuborg beer bottle that conceals a bottle opener underneath; the extraordinary cleanliness of the labels of the Selfridges private label, that give honey and sauce bottles the aplomb of philosophical essays; the complex design work for the Oxo Grind peppermill. The selfsame volume should feature along with all this, produced by a publisher like Rotovision that has been tackling these subjects for some time now, indeed it is a cult object in itself: clean graphics and overall appeal, photos of excellent quality, impeccable paging, it achieves points of elegance unknown even to many design or contemporary art catalogues.

Designer’s Breaking Block AA.VV, Rockport 2004 Il sottotitolo recita: “501 soluzioni di caratteri, colori e materiali per il graphic design”, ed in effetti le possibilità offerte sono veramente tante. In realtà, si tratta di ben di più: anche per chi non è un grafico, l’eccezionale sfilata di esempi, tratti da riviste, folder, inviti, packaging, costituisce un piacere per gli occhi e una sorpresa per la mente.
