He had been exposed to a board spectrum of projects, ranging from residential to infrastructures, from scheme design to construction, and from local to oversea projects. His key specialties are in three major areas, project coordination, site experience and façade design solutions in high architectural qualities.

Other major IDA projects he had completed includes Cetus Square Mile and Eltanin square mile in Tai Kok Tsui, 3 Julia in Ho Man Tin and Novum West in Sheung Wan. Besides, he also accumulated some experience in interior design, design competitions and administration aspects.

The Grampian is designed as a modern house within a walled garden, a quintessentially English concept that “a man’s home is his castle” .

At ground level, residents enter the mansion through the landscaped garden, and concierge is readied at the reception foyer. The 8-storeyed mansion comprises 14 residential apartments and two lobbies.

Each apartment has its own lobby, and is served by a designated lift directly from ground level and the basement carpark.

Each unit measures 2,100 ft2 and has 4 bedrooms, all provided with en-suite bathrooms.

The architecture of the building is an expression of function and structure. The residential elements and the lift cores are articulated as separate volumes linked by connecting bridges. The passenger lifts shaft is glazed with special modular slumped glass, making the moving lift cars visible from the street without compromising the residents’ privacy. The structural frame and the shear walls can easily be identified by the façade features clad in glass reinforced concrete.

By utilizing elements from the oriental courtyard design methodology, such as borrowed landscapes, reflective pool, planting of pines trees and bamboo, the architect blurs the boundaries between the interior and the exterior.

Residents can enjoy the inner views when cooking. A corridor is designed in the central to connect maid room and living room.

Work space and exhaust of the kitchen are designed to face the courtyard.

Bathtubs and showers cubicles are provided in every master bathroom. Marbles in contrasting colour define dry area and wet zone.

In unit 8B, the concept of oriental garden is realized in the form of raised platforms. Sitting out area, and dining table are sunken to provide the contrast. Gravels, bushes stripes and the timber platform created a Japanese corridor-like meditation space for visitors.

This remote control vehicle gate composed of two mechanical door leaf, which usually concealed by the granite fence wall in the front.

Extruded alumium fins defined the module of top-hung window in the cantilevered staircase hood block, and interfacing with limestone cladding and tiles.

The atrium provide spatial transparency to the apartment building. Inter-floor visual connection between ground floor and upper floor is encouraged with the presence of void.

Gym room and outdoor deckings

Mailbox is suspended between two columns, and forms a visual barrier between corridors and swimming pool. With the octopus sensors and locks installed, residents can assess their mailbox in a convenience manner.

The lap pool is around 12m in length, and is raised on ground. At night, lightings inside the pool will lit the water, and become the visual focus of the clubhouse area.

The sliding doors around the gym room can be fully opened when the weathe is nice, residents can do morning exercise in the outdoor decking and lawn area, as an extension of gym.

Regarding the signage, the architect used the same Ariston marble to make a retractable back-lit signage box.

According to initial concept of “bridge within the building”, the corridor serves as a major N-S building axis separating the southern units and northern units. Residents will soon find themselves surrounded by panorama view of the city, before they turn the corner and head for their unit. Although the concept was not executed due to tight budget, the layout of building is anchored by the bridge-axis, which later reflected by arrangement of rooms layout. Symmetry on room layout incurs same symmetry on Southern Julia facade.

Framed by mullions and transoms, the life of residents within the rooms had become an interesting urban picturesque on Hong Kong high-rise.

During the facade scheme development, it is determined to honestly reflect each room layout through similar units on facade. Such concept have been further enhanced by simplicity in facade materials expressions.

Fire sprinkler inlet, and other services was concealed in stone cladding, leaving a clean entrance by forming a low stone parapet fence wall with adjacent building. The effect can be further enhanced if the door line tally with adjacent stone division line.

As an extension from interior entrance lobby, architect turned the left-over space into an inviting meditation space. Residents can freely access this courtyard timber deck. Rain water will be collected to fill the pool and formed the waterscape.

Borrowing the Zen concept from Japanese landscape design, the Japanese pine is the only thing to be seen while the residents passed to the lift lobby. Architect hoped to complete the visitors’ spiritual journey by reminding them a moment of peace for every “in” and “out” journey.

The glazing on the gym room not only allows the visitors to distract themselves with the views at entrance, but also carefully blend the curtain wall with stone facade, and define the boundary between tower and podium.

To unitify the podium facade, a 18mm thk limestone cladding was cladded on the CLP steel door. Butterfly hinge and stone stripes were applied on the functional louver and doors, to leave minimal visual impact on facade.

Contrast to the predominant stone facade, the shop elevation is celebrated in glass wall, which introduces natural lights from the surrounding. Double-height spatial expereince in the frontages are noted for granting grand spatial scale to shops, compared to the surroundings.

The architectural design concept for QRW attempts to capture the young and energetic spirit of the area. The Hong Kong University MTR Station is literally at the doorstep of the site. For the neighbourhood, QRW is going to be the place to meet and greet. A plaza is therefore created in front of the doubleheight arcade entrance of QRW. The plaza provides opportunities to incorporate public art and culture, and the space for spontaneous street performances or events to take place.

At street level, the double-storey shop fronts on Queen’s Road West continue into the building interior, turning the arcade into an internal ‘street’, which links with the other end of the side street to form a loop. Shopfronts are designed to maximise transparency. Ground floor shopfronts are designed with glass fin supports and pedestrians may see across the corners, which are curved to further improve sightlines to the shops.

The podium facade is articulated by subdividing into bays, giving a hint of the local vernacular and traditional shop fronts. The steep tree-covered slopes behind QRW inspire the idea of introducing ‘terraces’ at upper levels of the podium. Apart from green wall systems and climber plants on the vertical surfaces, the textures of floor paving and the three dimensional articulation of the façade elements give the impression of miniature hills and valleys. How can a mall façade design rejuvenate old neighbourhoods?

Soon after its completion, Eltanin and Cetus have drawn attention from the public, as they are the first two mixed-use landmark noting the Tai Kok Tsui urban transformation process under Henderson Square Mile redevelopment scheme.

To create a mass identity among all the Henderson future holdings in the district, the Square Mile development adopt the pedestrian-first planning approach. By carving internal retail streets between blocks, it links up all the adjacent podium malls, thus forms the street mall experience.

Taking the prevalent Hong Kong typical tower and podium approach, both the high-rise share similar compositions and programme, despite the slight difference due to site restraints. Both Eltanin and Cetus have two floors of on-grade street malls. Clubhouses are situated on the second floor, as designed as the second important entrance space, in the developer’s philosophy.

How to blend new airport expansion to an terminal in operation?

Dehli international airport private limited (DIAL) have scheduled the IGI airport terminal 1 a material renovation, expects to meet the future domestic flight traffic growth to an annual capacity of 35 million passengers per year (MAP). To achieve the above, AECOM had been appointed as lead consultants in 2015 for the related assessment and full services design. IDA were then further appointed as design architect sub-consultant, and later provides design concepts according to estimated Program of Area Requirement (PoR).

DIAL wish to resolve recent landside traffic congestion, which was due to outdated landside planning. As a result, the 30-month renovation plan includes the apron expansion, T1D departure forecourt widening

works, the demolition of old T1C arrival hall and associated expansion, a further provision of 22 aerobridges, lanes widening and new carpark complex design for 1500 cars.

To solve the geometrical conflict between the old and new, architect proposed a twodirection 15m gridded roof to connect both terminals, and extended them to landside carpark and airport village design. IDA also simplified the departure and arrival flows, allow the passengers to flow continuously across same floor, in either departing or arriving.

In this project, laminated timber structural system would be greatly applied in all the roof of new terminal, thanks to the satisfactory construction experience in Cebu airport in Philippines.

The first proposed site for Kennedy Town Station was the Forbes Street Playground, where construction would affect a number of 120-year-old banyan trees growing on historic stone walls. To protect the trees, the station box was shifted eastward, onto Smithfield and the site of the Kennedy Town Swimming Pool.

Likened to a futuristic spaceship by the South China Morning Post, the new Kennedy Town Swimming Pool was constructed in two phases: the first phase was opened to the public in May 2011 and comprises a 50-metre outdoor pool and a smaller leisure pool, both with magnificent views of Victoria Harbour and Belcher Bay Park.

A new pool had to be constructed elsewhere before the original one could be demolished. The site chosen was a surface car park that boasted an uninterrupted sea view but had lain derelict since the land was reclaimed in the 1990s. To draw residents to this neglected corner of an otherwise vibrant neighbourhood, the site demanded a memorable icon.

During construction of the MTR West Island Line, the site adjacent to the first phase of the swimming pool hosted a shaft for the removal of underground spoil. After the railway line opened in 2014, construction of the poolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second phase began there. Featuring two indoor pools, a jacuzzi, and an outdoor garden, the final stage of the project opened in February 2017.

Kennedy Town Station is the new western terminus of the MTR Island Line. Comprising two underground levels with entrance pavilions, a bus terminus, and playgrounds above, the station aims to sensitively blend into the existing urban fabric. Natural materials and colours pay respect to adjacent historic stone walls, colonised by 120-yearold banyan trees, which were carefully preserved.

The station was built on the site of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old swimming pool, necessitating construction of a new Kennedy Town Swimming Pool, also designed by Farrells.

Together, this multifaceted urban intervention revitalised the community through two very different approaches.

In Cambodia rural province of Kampot and Kampong Speu, the education level had not yet fully recovered after the end of Khmer Rouge. The local school network is not convenient outside Phnom Penh, and the travel distance between villages keep villagers isolated from town.

IDEA, with their advocation on “Involve in Design, Empower with Action”, has recruited volunteers annually from all fields.

They design educational kiosk to suit the local needs and do fund-raising in Hong Kong. Every year, these volunteers procure local materials, and build a series of affordable classrooms and kiosk for pre-school facilities.

In IDEA projects, every school building design are unique. First of all, they offer sufficient shading, good ventilation and lightings to the users. Secondly, the preliminary design are tailored made to villagers and teachers for their daily operation

In 2015, the central market becomes the focal point of the great debate on Hong Kong conservation strategy. Several scheme had been proposed in the early 00’, but none of them was accepted.

Being recognized as one of the most expensive plot of land, Urban renewal authority (URA) struggled about the balance between public interest, political concern, conservation requirement and commercial gains.

regenerate historical functions, introducing modern creativity bazaar, and returning public greenery space to Central visitors.

The proposal aimed at turning the Central Market into a hub of multi-cultural value, and in the same time financial sustainable project.

Recently, the URA has commenced the renovation works, and the locals expect the above values would be reflected on the future management.

To prevent the Central market falls into a farce of insincere conservation, the Central & Western concern group has gathered the professionals, and later released the citizenorientated scheme. It was based on the principal of preserving original structures,

What story did the ratten jacket in Holly Road Wood tell us?

The competition proposal is to use the existing lamppost to strengthen the identity of Old Town Central, enhance its character and assist visitor navigation by providing impressions that help them build a mental map of the area.

The lampposts are not supposed to be the centre of attention. The design acknowledges the more tranquil and almost spiritual nature of Hollywood Zone A, and proposes a design that can combine history and modernity.

Rattan ware was once an important industry in Hong Kong. It is also extremely sustainable, light and strong. By using rattan to cast an unpretentious streamlined form or ‘jacket’ over the lampposts, it gives them a new interpretation, ‘weaving’ history into a product of modern technology (lighting) as well as paying tribute to the craftsmanship in weaving the rattan, a soon lost tradition as fewer and fewer youngsters are joining the trade.

The lamppost rattan ‘jackets’ are to have three different shapes and the lower part of the shafts are covered with colour coded PVC film in order to act as navigational aids for visitors, but putting the strong primary colours and the rattan against each other also juxtaposes the new and the old.

The jackets are to be prefabricated as halves and coupled together on site, broken down into smaller modules.

At each nodal points, the silhouette of the lamppost design changes to indicate it is a decision point for the visitor whether to detour away from Hollywood or not.

As a spine, it is also important for visitors to know where they are along its length.

This competition proposal set the historical landmark Man Mo Temple as the heart of historical zone in red, where as the eastern end towards Zone B and Wyndham Street is associated more with food and beverage, night life and fun. Blue is therefore designated in similar logic.

Thus the colours transit from blue to red also helps the tourists in their wayfinding.

sketch on the road I believe sketches captured more than photo.

Sketch, is a form of art before formal drawing is drawn. It symbolizes things not yet born and fixed, and before any re-definition. It implied possibility of forms, happened between reality world or sketcherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imagination.

Since my undergraduate years, professor Mr. Gu Da Qing have taught me basic drawing skills in my studio, left me an interesting habit to travel with sketch book.

For over ten years, those sketches not only recorded the essences of architecture I visited in US, Europe, Japan, but also the touching feeling happened in that moment.

APPENDIX

I sincerely hope that these sketches can preserve certain degree of truth and joyful moment of this world. And you enjoy looking at them.
