HISTORY

DARWIN BOMBED IN WWII

As a strategic Allied military base, Darwin was the target of Japanese air raids in 1942, with more bombs dropped on the city than on Pearl Harbour in Honolulu, USA. The bombing of Darwin by aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy began on 19 February 1942, killing more than 230 people. Bombed in more than air raids during World War ll, the destruction of infrastructure, buildings and ships created signifcant de astation and ensured the postwar rebuild was a formidable task for the survivors.

A CITY WITHOUT WOMEN & CHILDREN

Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, provided a stark and growing realisation in Australia that an attack on Darwin was a real and present threat. Under the instruction of Prime Minister Robert Menzies’ War Cabinet, over 2000 women and children were placed on planes, and boats and sent by road out of ar in ith the fnal evacuation aircraft leaving the City just one day before the frst air raid

EVACUATION ORDER

CITIZENS OF DARWIN, The Federal War Cabinet has decided that women and children must be compulsorily evacuated from Darwin as soon as possible, except women required for essential services. Arrangements have been completed and the frst party will leave within the next 48 hours. This party will include sick in hospital, expectant mothers, aged and infrm and women with young children. You have all been issued with printed notices advising you what may be taken and this must be strictly adhered to. Personal efects must not exceed 35 lbs. The staf dealing with evacuation is at the Native Afairs Branch in Mitchell Street and will be on duty! day and night continuously. The personnel who will make up the frst party will be advised during the next few hours and it will be the duty of all citizens to comply at once with the instructions given by responsible authorities. Remember what your Prime Minister, Mr. Curtin, said recently. “The time has gone by for argument. The instructions of the Federal Government must be carried out.” The Federal Government has made all arrangements for the comfort and welfare of your families in the South. Darwin citizens will greatly

assist the war efort by cheerfully carrying out all requests. There will be hardship and sacrifce, but the war situation demands these and I am sure Darwin will set the rest of Australia a magnifcent example to follow. (Sgd.) C. L.
