ANZAC Day – The Silent Service This year the Darwin High School Anzac Assembly featured a tribute to “The Silent Service”, the Australian Submarine Flotilla and acknowledged the role played by the people of the Kahlin Compound in welcoming the Flotilla to Darwin shores.

The commemoration focused on HMAS EA2 which was lost in action in the Sea of Marmara on 30 April 1915, after forcing a passage through the Dardanelles. AE2 was the first Australian Unit into the Gallipoli campaign, commencing operations two hours before our troops landed.

Fifty invited guests attended with all the Darwin High School students.

Thank you to Judy Boland who coordinates a small army of volunteers to make our ANZAC Assembly a great showcase of our students' talent.

A Gift from Kalymnos Early this term Ms Hayley Barich, City of Darwin Community Liaison Officer and Mr Antonis Miaoudis, Chairperson of the Kalymnos Sister City Program presented to Darwin High School a gift of books from Kalymnos High School. The books destined for the Year 11 and 12 Greek language classes, were part of a book exchange arranged by the City of Darwin Sister Cities program.

At the same time, students at Kalymnos High School were receiving books donated by Darwin High School students which extolled the virtues of living in the Northern Territory.

Climbing High at Hayes Creek At the end of first term Stage 2 Outdoor Education class spent three days rock climbing at Hayes Creek.

It was a chance to put into practice the rope and climbing skills the students had been working on during the term.

The heat and humidity made it pretty tough out there, with the rock being so hot at times it radiated extra heat onto the already hot climbers. Any opportunity to take a rest in the shade was welcome.

Darwin High School Wins Senior Secondary Debating Final The Debating Finals were held in Parliament House on Tuesday, April 21, from 5pm Darwin High School and Good Shepherd Lutheran College debated the topic “that we should get rid of the states�. The Darwin High School team argued the negative.

Congratulations to Lauren Northcote, Beth Hubble (holding the trophy), Tilly Lyons and Meika Liveris who convinced the adjudicators that we should not abandon our state system.

Students created and climbed on their own anchor systems, learnt to abseil independently and challenged themselves on a range of climbs.

They demonstrated great maturity and teamwork and exhibited excellent risk management.

Next term Stage 1 and Stage 2 Outdoor Education students will be heading to Kakadu to put their navigation skills to the test on bushwalks in the Yurmikmik and Muguk regions.

City of Darwin Haikou Film Project Over the last 2 years, Darwin High students learning Chinese have been involved in a bilingual book exchange project with Hainan Overseas Chinese Middle School (in the city of Haikou, China) and the city councils of Darwin and Haikou. Following the success of this project, the City of Darwin has received extra funding to develop the books into a short film which can be exchanged between the two cities.

This term, students of Chinese have been working with Gail Evans from Corrugated Iron Youth Arts to develop a script for the film based on the ‘Life of a teenager in Darwin’ book. It is hoped that this film will bring the stories from the book to life and help students in Haikou to better understand young people in Darwin.

Year 12 students, Ka Wai Teng and Johannah Pastor will travel to Haikou in June to help run workshops with students in Haikou so that they can also create their own film version of the Haikou book. This is such a great opportunity to strengthen the connection between our two cities, our two schools and our students.
