BIOLOGY IS THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF LIFE AND ENCOMPASSES THE INVESTIGATION OF LIVING ORGANISMS AND LIFE PROCESSES FROM CELLS AND INDIVIDUAL ORGANISMS TO POPULATIONS OF ANIMALS AND PLANTS
WHY SHOULD I STUDY APPLIED SCIENCE? If you’re interested in the workings of the human body, forensic investigation and analysis as well as physical science then this is a great choice of subject for you! During Year 12 you will maintain a broad study of biology, chemistry and physics related topics through class and practical work, before taking specialised units. In Year 13 you can take units which will enable you to specialise in medical science, forensic science or physical science. Forensic science: you will learn how forensic evidence is collected and analysed to gain an insight into forensic psychology and crime scene investigation. Medical science: you will learn about the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic systems, as well as the organisation of cells and tissues and central nervous system. Physical science: you will learn about a range of issues related to applied physics such as mathematical methods to solve problems, energy changes and circuits. WHAT CAN I STUDY IT WITH? It combines very well with many others, especially Health and Social Care, Sport and Psychology.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS? It provides excellent preparation for a wide range of degrees such a sport coaching, sport science, nursing, paramedic practice, forensic science, food technology, dental technology, radiology, physiotherapy and sports therapy. Some university medical, dental and pharmacy schools will accept this qualification if studied alongside A Levels in Chemistry and Biology. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: At least five GCSE Grades A*-C or 9-5, including English Language, Maths and Science.

WHY SHOULD I STUDY BIOLOGY? Biology is an exciting and rapidly advancing subject with a higher profile today than perhaps at any other time. Many of the important and contentious issues which society must face as it continues through the 21st Century relate to the biological sciences. Serious ethical debates surround issues such as cloning, genetically modified foods, stem cell research and the human genome project and the use of its findings. Moreover, health, pollution, global warming, disease, overuse of antibiotics, drug misuse, malnutrition and many other issues high up the political agenda make having a detailed knowledge of biology essential. You will be stretched and challenged in engaging lessons as well as undertake practical experiments and field work. We provide a very supportive environment for you to fulfil your potential. WHAT CAN I STUDY IT WITH? As an A Level, it combines well with all other subjects. It is particular useful alongside Chemistry, Medical Science, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Sport, Health and Social Care, Geography and Computer Science.

Studying Biology will provide you with excellent opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills to progress onto a range of degrees including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Biochemistry, Marine Biology, Forestry, Neuroscience, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Physiotherapy and Sports Science. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: At least five GCSE Grades A*-B or 9-6, although Grades A/A* or 9-7 are preferred, including English Language, Maths and Biology or Core Science and Additional Science.
