SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC -.The Bobcats welcome Dartmouth to Hamden for the 28th all-time meeting between the two teams. Quinnipiac is coming off a 2-0 loss at St. Lawrence last Saturday that capped a 1-1 conference-opening weekend in the North Country. -.Last year’s regular season and postseason champions are led offensively by Tim Clifton’s five goals and eight points. Clifton has a pair of game-winning goals this season as Quinnipiac is 5-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in ECAC Hockey games. - .Goaltending duties have been split between junior Chris Truehl (3-2-1 / .921 / 2.31) and freshman Andrew Shortridge (2-1-0 / .903 / 2.34) with the former playing nearly twice the time of the latter.

LAST TIME OUT The Big Green are coming off a three-point weekend in which they tied Cornell, 1-1, and shutout Colgate, 2-0, at home in the first weekend of ECAC Hockey play.

AGAINST THE BOBCATS -.The Bobcats swept the season series with Dartmouth last year with a 6-2 home win and an improbable 7-5 victory in Hanover that featured a six-goal third period to overcome a 5-2 Dartmouth lead in the final frame. - .The two teams met again in the ECAC Hockey Semifinals in Lake Placid. A much more low-scoring affair than the two regular season tilts, the Bobcats came away with a 3-1 win en route to capturing their first league playoff title.

SCOUTING PRINCETON - .The Tigers are one of just four remaining DI teams without a win yet as they are 0-3-0 overall. That figure includes an 0-2-0 record against ECAC Hockey teams after being shutout, 4-0, at St. Lawrence and falling, 4-2, the next evening at Clarkson. -.A trio of Princeton players have three points to lead the team in scoring coming into the weekend. Alex Riche (2-1-3), Ryan Kuffner (1-2-3) and Max Veronneau (0-3-3) all sit atop the team’s scoring leaderboard with Riche the only player with multiple goals. -.As expected, senior Colton Phinney has been the Tigers’ go-to netminder, playing every minute in the paint. So far, his numbers are below his usual strong figures as he currently boasts a 4.04 goals against average and a save percentage of .865.

AGAINST THE TIGERS -.Dartmouth has not lost or tied Princeton since Nov. 13, 2013 when the Tigers earned a 5-4 OT home win against the Green. It was the second OT win against Dartmouth on the young season after opening the year with a 3-2 victory in Newark at the Liberty Shootout. -.Since then, the Big Green have been dominant against Princeton, winning the last seven games with a pair of shutouts as well as a two-game sweep of the Tigers in the 2015 first round. BACKED BY BUFFALO - .Junior Devin Buffalo has been solid in his first three starts of the season, posting a 2-0-1 record that included his first career shutout Saturday against the Raiders (21 saves). -.After making 23 saves against Cornell and 21 the following night, Buffalo has now allowed just three goals all season and boasts the nation’s best goals against average at 0.97, the lone sub-1.00 mark in Division I. - .Buffalo’s .957 save percentage is also the best figure in the country to this point (both starters and non-starters). CREMA’S SECOND WINNER - .Senior Troy Crema scored with 2:16 left in regulation to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead against Colgate. That goal would stand up as the game winner, his second in three contests this year. -.Only two players have scored more game-winning goals this season than Crema’s pair. Andrew Shurtz of Penn State and Mitchell Foster of Maine both have three winners to this point, but have played six and seven more games than Dartmouth’s senior. Crema’s 0.67 winners per game is far and away the best figure, aided by his smaller sample size of contests. -.The last Dartmouth player to notch two game-winnings goals in the third period or overtime in a season was Eric Neiley ’15 during his senior year. Neiley scored six total game winners that year with three coming in the third (home vs. Cornell, AIC and Princeton) and one in OT (at Clarkson). THE BRONCO’S TWO LATE POINTS -.Carl Hesler assisted on Crema’s winner against both Michign and Colgate, but was credited with the primary helper on the most recent one as he pushed the puck off the boards and up the wall to his senior linemate. -.Hesler’s first goal of the season came as he hit the empty net from just inside his own blueline. -.The goal was his second point in less than a minute and a half and made him the first Big Green player with multiple points this season. NO SLOUCH EITHER Crema might be getting all the attention for the late winners, but junior Corey Kalk has played a major role in the team’s unblemished record. Kalk not only set up Crema for the winner against the Wolverines, but he netted his first of the season at the perfect time against Cornell. Kalk responded to Cornell opening the scoring by finishing a rush just 2:13 later, scoring the game-tying goal. DROP THE PUCK There are benefits to being the home team in terms of being able to put your stick down second on the draw. Dartmouth is the nation’s best team on draws to this point, winning 110-of-191 faceoffs for a success rate of 57.6 percent. Union is second at 57.2 percent. The true test comes this weekend as the Big Green play their first game away from Thompson without last change and faceoff advantages. NONE FROM THE D Dartmouth is the only team in the country without a point from its defense. All 14 of the team’s points in three games came from forwards. TEAM DEFENSE The Big Green don’t seem too concerned with lack of scoring from the defense as it has allowed the fewest goals (3) and shots against (69), while it’s 1.00 goals against per game is also the top figure nationally. The shots against figure is understandably skewed given the number of games the team has played in relation to the rest of the country, but the 23.0 shots against per game mark is fifth in the nation and second in ECAC Hockey (Harvard / 21.75).

1.00

Not just the GPA of Alpha House, it’s also the power-play success rate for the Big Green at this point. Dartmouth is 0-for-19 on the man-advantage through three games.

It’s a smaller sample size than most DI teams, but Dartmouth’s 1.00 goals against average is the best mark in the nation.

Dartmouth is the only team in DI without a PPG with Brown and Princeton each boasting one.

The Green and White started the season with two goals against Michigan and has allowed one fewer in each of the subsequent two games.

3-1

Dartmouth saw its season end to then-No. 1 Quinnipiac last March. The Bobcats defeated the seventh-seeded Big Green with a 3-1 win in the ECAC Hockey Semifinals in Lake Placid.

SPECIAL TEAMS BREAKDOWN -.Dartmouth is 54th in penalty minutes per game at 10.67. Saturday’s opponent Princeton is tied for 57th at 10.0 per game. Quinnipiac is the 14th most penalized team in the country, averaging 17.56 minutes in penalties per outing. -.A 9-for-9 weekend on the penalty kill helped move the Big Green to 23rd in the nation with an 85.7 rate. -.The Green and White are 0-for-19 on the power play and are the only team in the country without a tally on the manadvantage.

A TIE? WHAT THE HECK IS A TIE -.The Big Green were one of just two NCAA teams in 2015-16 to not post a tie in a conference game (Minnesota). It didn’t take long for Dartmouth to move beyond that anomaly this year as it played to a 1-1 draw against the Big Red in the conference opener. -.The tie was the 100th in the head coaching career of Bob Gaudet ’81 between his time at Brown (31) over nine seasons and the last 20 years at his alma mater (69). -.The Green’s last draw was a 1-1 game at Michigan last Nov. 28, 2015. That game marked the first career start for Buffalo who finished with 37 saves, still a career-best total.

SUSPENSION Friday’s game will be played without the services of senior and alternate captain Grant Opperman who was handed a one-game suspension from the ECAC Hockey office on Monday after a reviewed hit against Colgate. This is Opperman’s first time disciplined by the conference. 375 With one more win, Bob Gaudet can become the 29th coach in the history of NCAA men’s hockey with 375 career victories. The Dartmouth bench boss can tie Mike Sertich (Minnesota-Duluth and Michigan Tech) for 28th all-time and would be one back of Friday’s opposing coach Rand Pecknold who has 376 career wins coming into the weekend at the Division I level (1998-present). WHAT’S AHEAD? Dartmouth will have little time to sit back after the weekend as it takes on former ECAC Hockey travel partner and regional rival Vermont Tuesday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. SEASON OPENERS The victory over the Wolverines was the first in an opener since the 2011-12 campaign. Dartmouth had posted an 0-22 mark in the last four season-opening contests against Princeton (L), Yale (T) and Harvard (T, L). LATE-GAME HEROICS -.Troy Crema’s goal with 49 seconds left in regulation marked the first time Dartmouth had scored a non-empty net goal in the final minute of regulation in almost two full years. -.The last time the Big Green notched a goal in the final minute of the third period against the opposition’s goalie was Schierhorn’s game-tying goal at Union on Nov. 7, 2014 as part of the 4-3 OT win after trailing 3-0 midway through the second period. FIRST GAME. FIRST POINTS. - The Big Green got quality production from their freshman class in their collegiate debuts against Michigan. Cam Strong anchored a line of rookies with Will Graber and Ryan Blankemeier. Strong scored halfway through the second period for his first goal in a Dartmouth sweater with Graber and Blankemeier earning assists on the play. Strong appeared to score again late in the third, but the apparent second goal of the night for the Montana native was waived off due to what the refs deemed goaltender interference. -.Daniel Warpecha also got on the board with an assist on Kevin Neiley’s second-period score.

DARTMOUTHHOCKEY

HALFWAY THERE With his second-period goal, Kevin Neiley is already halfway to his total from a season ago. The Pennsylvania product scored the first two goals of his career in a 5-2 home win on Jan. 15 last season against Clarkson. Neiley finished the year with 11 points, but didn’t manage to find the back of the net again. He got the goal-scoring monkey off his back with a well-placed wrist shot low to the blocker side against Michigan’s Jack LaFontaine two minutes into the middle frame, finishing off a play started by Warpecha digging out a puck along the halfboards and feeding his linemate for the shot.

WIN THE DRAW, WIN THE GAME -.Dartmouth won 52-of-76 faceoffs against Michigan in the opener (68.4%). -.Sophomore John Ernsting won 18-of-23 (78.3%) draws in the game. -.Last season, the Big Green were 33rd in the nation in faceoffs (49.7%), while Ernsting was third on the team (52.3%).

BOB GAUDET HEAD COACH | DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1981

20th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH 29th YEAR AS HEAD COACH Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ‘91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his first season in Hanover. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his fourcareer shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team while at Hanover High School. Kelly is a member of the Class of 2017 at Dartmouth.

In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11, eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12 and reaching 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont in 2013-14. In 2014-15, Gaudet reached both 250 wins at Dartmouth and 350 career wins between Hanover and his time at Brown. In 28 seasons as a head coach, including the last 19 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 11 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2016-17 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 279 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. The 2015-16 season was special for Gaudet for both his current and former players. He guided the Big Green back to the ECAC Hockey semifinals for the seventh time, becoming the first team in conference history to reach the league’s final weekend of competition without having a single player earn a spot on any of the three all-conference teams, demonstrating a team-first mentality. Ben Lovejoy ’06 also helped the Pittsburgh Penguins capture the fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history and, in the process, became the first Dartmouth player since Myles Lane ’28 in 1929 to win the Stanley Cup. Lovejoy, the first New Hampshire-born player to win the Cup, brought the trophy back to Thompson Arena for a public event where he was introduced to the crowd by Gaudet whom Lovejoy credited with “giving me a second chance at hockey.” After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 199798 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 . The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two
